Catherine Manna’s climb up the music chain has been anything but ordinary.

The mom-of-three never gave up her singing and songwriting aspirations and now, the Trail talent is finally receiving the industry nod that she’s always dreamed of.

And it’s all thanks to the Internet.

Manna and her husband/ producer Maverick Blue already have a mantle full of awards for songwriting and recordings from the online station called the Independent Music Channel (IMC).

After visiting Hollywood twice for the channel’s red carpet awards, and singing at the famous Whisky A Go Go club on the Sunset Strip in 2014, Manna and Maverick Blue released new songs that are up for another 35 nominations in the indie world.

“Most people start what I am doing at 24,” Manna chuckled. “I did it backwards. I had three children and raised them before I started all of this.”

She’s always been a singer and began writing original tunes at 14. But after being knocked down and getting back up the last few years, Manna says life’s struggle has given her profound insight to write the lyrics fans are now connecting with.

“From all over the world, we were chosen out of thousands of submissions in our field,” Manna explained. “I think it’s because we have a story to tell,” she continued, referring to working in studio with her husband. “We are a husband and wife team, and this magical thing happens between us. It’s love, and all our feelings and emotion go into our music ®C that’s us.

“So it’s an honour to be recognized by industry

professionals and a privilege to be chosen.”

Her collaboration with artists Sam Hankins and Natasha Meadow on an album called Destiny was recently nominated for the 2015 Akademia Music Award for Best American Album of the year.

The tracks are receiving airplay on Internet radio sites from Texas to England, says Manna. And she’s recently been given the thumbs up for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards slated for fall.

“I’ve cried many tears when people tell me they don’t believe in me because I am 54 ®C but here I am doing it and I feel like something has hit me,” Manna shared. “They say when something happens, it will happen really fast ®C and it’s happening.”

Never give up on your dreams, they are alive as long as you are living and breathing, Manna says.

“The memory of what you left behind will always remain inside.”

She’s already won the 2015 IMC best video of the year award for “Cry Over You,” and is waiting to hear if her original “Carry On” composition takes the 2015 International Music and Entertainment Associations’ song of the year.

With so many accolades from the industry and live performances ahead, Manna keeps herself grounded with help from her children.

“They see me as mom and want to know what’s for dinner,” she laughed. “They don’t see me as this next potential rock star. If they were still nine or ten, they’d still be my number one fans.”

Manna and Maverick Blue are multi-genre artists, writing and performing contemporary, Christian, easy listening, blues and jazz.

The boat, which the couple will now live on, is bound for a marina in New Westminster. It will make its maiden voyage this fall.

Email scammers use Selkirk rental listings BETSY KLINE West Kootenay Advertiser

An email scam is currently targeting local people advertising rentals for Selkirk College students.

Those working the scam appear to be getting information from the Selkirk College web page listings of rental units available in the area.

Unfortunately, someone has decided to take advantage of the listings with a version of a cheque cashing scam. Wendy Voykin has received four of these fraudulent emails since posting her rental listing.

Voykin was not taken in by the scam, noticing several red flags along the way.

She just wants others to know about the

scam, so no one gets hurt. “There are people who might get burned, and be out $5000 in this community and there may be students that might not get housing because people will stop putting their names up any more,” she said. “It is an important service Selkirk provides. At the same time, I don’t want someone to get scammed.”

She has notified Selkirk and UBC about

the incident and has reported the fraud.

According to Cathy Mercer, Selkirk College Director of Student Enrollment Services and Registrar, the college will be taking steps to alert those using the rental listings of the potential scam. These steps will likely include the addition of some yellow warning boxes on the website and an automated reply that will go out when someone posts a listing.

Mercer emphasized that most listings and responses are legitimate, but they do want to encourage anyone who has been approached with something suspicious to contact them right away.

“We would like the community to keep the college informed,” said Mercer, “So we can help and warn others.”

Smorgasbord of drugs seized during Shambhala Music Festival Marijuana, magic mushrooms, hash oil, cocaine, steroids, crystal meth, MDMA, Ketamine and LSD are examples of drugs seized during Shambhala Music Festival.

Police just released their report following the Salmo event, which welcomed more than

10,000 people to take in the electronic music festival in its 18th year running.

Highway patrol was prepared for the masses leaving the grounds Aug. 10 with every

highway car in and out of the region on duty.

During the festival, police charged three people with driving while impaired with drugs, one by alcohol, and impounded nu-

merous other vehicles because people were either driving while prohibited or the vehicles were unsafe to be on the road.

By far the most serious problem was ag-

gressive driving both to and from the grounds.

But drugs seem to centre around most offences, which included 104 drug seizures.

Twenty-three people were charged with pos-

session of a controlled substance, two charged with trafficking, one for Proceeds of Crime and one woman arrested and taken into custody for breach of her conditional sentence.

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. Kristy Clark visits after wildfire Craig Lindsay West Kootenay Advertiser

More than 600 people had to be evacuated on Thursday after a wildfire, thought to be human-caused, grew to 3,500 hectares. RDKB confirmed on Sunday morning that 30 homes have been lost to the fire with 11 additional properties where structures other than homes have been damaged or lost. The surrounding communities have

all chipped in to help out the evacuees. Five hundred were housed in Midway either at the community hall, or billeted at people’s houses.

There have also been hundreds of donations of much needed items such as clothes, blankets, water, food and toiletries.

Premier Christy Clark was at the Midway Hall on Sunday to talk with evacuees and volunteers.

She also talked at a press conference about the

government’s goals for fire preparedness and prevention.

Also burning in the Kootenay Boundary area is a 260 hectare blaze near the highway 10 km north of Christina Lake.

There is a 14,000 hectare fire south of Grand Forks in Washington state. That blaze, known as the Stickpin fire, is estimated at 6 kilometres from the Canadian border. Smoke from that fire has been visible from Grand Forks.

For the third year in a row, B.C. residents will vote for their favourite local agricultural-based businesses.

Monday, the We Heart Local Awards began accepting online nominations in 15 categories, including favourite local brewery, favourite farmers’ market, and favourite store to buy local.

The awards were originally started by the B.C. dairy industry, but were taken over by the BC Agriculture Council (BCAC), which expanded the awards to include all kinds of agricultural products, including meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, veggies, wine, and beer.

“It starts to recognize the local businesses, the local agriculture, you know, from farm to table, and it celebrates the entire community’s support for it,” Lorne Hunter, board director of BCAC, said of the program. “It shows the economic, the social, and

the environmental sustainability of BC’s agriculture.”

Last year there were close to 350 businesses nominated, and almost 40,000 votes.

“People get the moral boost of having their businesses nominated,” said Hunter. “And for those that are doing the nominating and the voting there are some pretty decent prizes to go with it as well.”

Each week there will be a draw for a $100 gift card to the local BC VQA, and the grand prize draw is for a threenight trip for two at the Taku Resort and Marina on Quadra Island. The prize includes a cooking course and a $300 gift card for BC Ferries to get to the island.

So far no business from the Kootenays has won a We Heart Local Award; all the more incentive to nominate your favourite local food grower, producer, supplier or vendor.

You’re a university student. You’re living at home in the Kootenays for the summer. You have never voted before.

You have decided that you are definitely going to vote in the federal election on Oct. 19. But where and how can you vote?

The answer may surprise you.

You can vote now. On any weekday.

Just go to the Elections Canada office in Nelson or Trail.

First they will ask you if you are registered to vote. If you don’t know, they will check for you. Or you can check online in advance at elections.ca.

If you aren’t registered they will register you on the spot.

To register or to vote, you need one of three things: your driver’s licence, your provincial ID card, or any other government card with your name, address, and photo. If you have none of those, you need two pieces of ID, at least one of which has your address on it.

Once you are registered, they will give you a blank ballot on which you must write the name of your chosen candidate. This is different from a regular election day ballot that shows the names of all candidates.

Hand in your ballot. You’ve voted.

This does not apply just to students.

Anyone can do it. This system is called special ballot voting, and is different from advance polling, which takes place Oct. 9 to 12.

But there is one extra thing that is unique to students, according to John Enright of Elections Canada. You can choose whether to vote for a candidate in your home riding or in the riding in which you live at university.

For example, if you’re from Nelson but will be attending school in the Vancouver East riding, you could choose to vote for a candidate in Kootenay Columbia or Vancouver East. But to get

Enright says an unprecedented number of people have registered to vote since the election was called.

“We have had more than 13,000 new electors registered since Aug. 2, and it is mostly a mix of new Canadians and 18-year-olds,” he says, adding this number is higher than anyone in his office expected or has seen before at this point in an election.

Their office hours in August are weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In September and October: weekdays from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 4 p.m.

The Trail Elections Canada office is at Waneta Plaza and is open weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Their phone numbers are not yet available.

Keep wild neighbours at bay by being bear-aware If you go out in the woods today, running into a bear may not be a picnic. Since British Columbia is home to both black and grizzly bear populations, human-bear encounters are becoming a normal occurrence as urban centres expand into regions once occupied by only wildlife. The key is to reduce potential conflicts with our wild neighbours, says BC SPCA chief scientific officer Dr. Sara Dubois. “There is potential for conflict whenever bears are drawn into urban areas by human food,” she says.

“Over time, bears may lose their natural fear of humans and actually come to associate people with food – with serious consequences. “ Hundreds of ‘problem’ bears are destroyed by B.C. conservation officers every year, she notes, as they look for food and often find exactly what they need in compost piles, garbage bins, fruit trees, bird feeders and pet food.

Dubois says conflict can be reduced by following these tips: • Keep garbage and recycling secured in the house, garage or shed until pick-up day; • Clean garbage and recycling bins regularly; • Pick up ripe and fallen fruit from trees and bushes daily; • Harvest garden vegetables as they ripen; • Clean barbecue grills after each use, and store barbecues in a secure area; • Bring pet food dishes inside; • Cover kitchen scraps in the compost with dry leaves or dried grass clippings; • Avoid overloading the compost with fruit waste by freezing it and

adding it gradually; • Turn compost regularly, and keep compost bins covered; • Work with neighbours to create a bear-aware neighbourhood • While some bears might be relocated, Dubois says this is often not a humane or effective solution, as the bear may return to where they came from, and translocation is hard on the bears themselves.

“Translocation is, at best, a shortterm solution to human-bear conflicts, and is far from being a positive choice from an animal welfare standpoint,” she says. “The key is to change our own behaviour and prevent bears from gaining access to human foods in the first place. People need to learn to coexist with bears to help make B.C. a safe place for ourselves and for our wild neighbours.”

She encourages people to help reduce conflicts with education, and to help spread the word with the BC SPCA’s bear door hanger, that can easily be ordered by contacting the BC SPCA. For more information and links to other organizations and government resources, visit spca.bc.ca/bears.
