Sciatica, Stenosis and Herniated Discs May Be to Blame for Pain and Numbness in Legs LOCAL CLINIC OFFERS FREE CONSULTATION TO THOSE SUFFERING FROM BACK AND NECK PAIN Did you know that over 30 million North Americans suffer from back and neck pain every day? Whether spine and back problems result from an auto accident, injury, or have crept up over time, sciatica and herniated discs are often misunderstood and improperly treated. They can result in pain and numbness anywhere in the body.

Whiplash Neck Pain

This pain affects everything that you do, from work to play, and ultimately your quality of life. You might not even be able to sleep at night without pain. If you suffer from debilitating pain, we are here to tell you that there is hope. We have the technology and decades of experience to help you find relief from disc problems and sciatica. The Spinal Decompression Institute focuses on treating all disc and spine-related conditions with advanced non-surgical treatments. We are so confident that we can help you find relief that we are offering a complimentary consultation to the first 25 callers.

]

Spinal Decompression Allows Back Pain to Heal... Without Drugs or Surgery Decompression relieves pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves. The task of relieving pain comes about as a result of drawing the leaking gel of a herniated disc back into place. Decompression achieves this by creating negative pressure within the disc, referred to as negative intradiscal pressure. This creates essentially a vacuum to draw the bulging and herniated disc material back into the disc space and relieves pressure. This process of non-surgical decompression allows the body to heal itself naturally and is only one of many treatment options available at the Spinal Decompression Institute.

Class IV Therapeutic Laser The Spinal Decompression Institute employs a variety of high-tech solutions along with decades of experience to help alleviate your particular pain. Along with spinal decompression, our Class IV Therapeutic Laser Therapy is an outpatient, non-surgical procedure which is often used in sports medicine to accelerate the healing process. This pain-free, non-surgical approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes, providing pain relief and reducing injury and damage. This leading-edge technology has shown results in returning patients to work, sports and competitive activities, as well as everyday life. Laser therapy is just one of the treatment options that Spinal Decompression Institute offers as a non-invasive option for those facing surgery.

ike a lot of Millennials, Charles Park grew up playing video games. In this way, he was not particularly unique. But Park was no casual gamer. He preferred titles that forced him to think and he was a fan of platforms that offered a sophisticated level of control – like PCs and laptops. If that made him old school, then so be it. And from a young age, he wondered what it would be like to create and develop his own game. But young dreams often prove to be just that – dreams – and by the time Park said goodbye to his teens, he’d bowed to the advice from friends and family that game development wasn’t a serious career choice. The interesting part is that every time you have a hand, your available special abilities change. Every time you play, you have a different set of cards. You have to strategize differently as to how to defeat the enemies within the game. You have to adapt quickly.” Fans of anime will be right in their element. The game’s artist, Melvin Kwan, is inspired by anime and has drawn all in-game elements by hand. It’s a cool look – home cooked characters with a distinct anime flavour. Park is quick to point out that Zeta Busters is by no means a commercial product. Developed with educational software and as a school project, it is not deep enough for retail (seasoned players should finish within an hour), and it is available only in PC form with PC-centric (mouse/cursor) control. Today, says Park, the four students responsible for Zeta Busters “have moved on to other things.” For Park himself, that means a new job as a game developer with Yaletown’s This Game Studio, a company set up and run by four ex-Electronic Arts whiz kids. It’s just where Park wants to be. He’s a happy dude. ❚ To learn more about Zeta Busters or to download the game, go to http://community.vfs.com/ arcade/game/zeta-busters/

Throwback Thursday 10 YEARS AGO, AUG. 20, 2005, IN THE PAGES OF THE NOW: ❚ Mayor Doug McCallum confirmed Surrey negotiated a deal with a female employee to settle a sexual harassment allegation against a senior manager in city hall. “I’m not going to talk about it,” McCallum said. “It’s completely confidential between two individuals. It is settled. It’s been put to bed.”

20 YEARS AGO, AUG. 20, 1995, IN THE PAGES OF THE NOW: ❚ Former Surrey mayor Doug Ross won’t be tried in court after all, for shoplifting. Surrey Crown counsel dropped the charge against Ross, who was accused of pocketing a rubber washer from a Surrey Lumberland store. Senior prosecutor Lothar Kiner said it was not in the public interest to proceed to trial, as there was not a substantial likelihood of conviction. “It was a misunderstanding,” Ross said. “I’m glad it’s over.” ❚ Photo radar was put to the test against speeders in North Delta, on River Road and Highway 99. Police expect to start issuing tickets in January 1996, and by June of the next year, 30 photo radar cameras were to be set up throughout the province. Compiled by Tom Zytaruk

SURREY — The city’s loneliest fuel station is probably the one located outside the Powertech Labs building on 88th Avenue. The high-tech pump

is used to fill hydrogenpowered vehicles – just eight of which are currently driven on Metro Vancouver streets. “This is the only station like this in Canada at the moment,” said Steve Mathews, who builds hydrogen fuelling stations with Powertech.

“It’s a chicken-andegg thing,” Mathews added. “The vehicle manufacturers have proven they can build the vehicle, and now they need the infrastructure to be put in place in order to bring out more vehicles. It’s about working together

to bring more vehicles along and also more stations.” All eight hydrogenpowered cars in B.C. were recently brought to the Jim Pattison Hyundai dealership at the North Surrey Auto Mall. Six of the Tucsons were quickly leased out

Waking up Whalley’s Corner: Part 5

Nightshift serves up ‘soul food’ in Whalley ‘This is messy. It looks bad. People die. There’s violence. There’s crime. But there’s a whole lot of love and that’s what I choose to see here.’ Story and photos by Amy Reid EDITOR’S NOTE: In our special series Waking up Whalley’s Corner, we are sharing stories from the area around 108th Avenue and King George Boulevard. With this series, we are delving into the area’s struggles, triumphs and what lies ahead.

P

eople line up as the sun shines down and live music plays in the background in the heart of Whalley. Those waiting to be fed from a truck are of all ethnicities and ages. A mousy teenaged girl in a ball cap. An elderly Caucasian man with long grey hair sporting a leather vest and tattoos you can’t miss. A timid 20-something South Asian man. Most people in the crowd outside NightShift Street Ministries don’t fit the stereotypical “street people” mold. That’s the reality of homelessness and poverty, says NightShift founder MaryAnne Connor. On this particular evening, about 40 people arrive to be fed by the faith-based organization. Their numbers have been down lately, Connor tells me as she counts them in her head. On

an average night, they see more than 100. “A part of me goes, ‘Where are all the people?’ And then I realize there’s someone in this lineup that just needs to connect,” says Connor. “It’s about that one. If there’s someone here who needs friendship, who needs a prayer, who need a hug, who needs love – we all need love – then we’ve done what we’re here to do.” It takes many people to make a night like this happen. On this Monday night, Abe Loewen is supervising. “I oversee things, make sure people are not accosted. But they really self patrol,” Loewen tells me. When he first began volunteering, most of the people they saw were men. “But now there’s a lot more women and children. It’s anybody that can’t feed themselves for whatever reason. They’re not necessarily homeless.”

HELPING FRIENDS

Meanwhile, I see a man who appears to be homeless helping set up tables. I approach him and ask how long he’s volunteered. He isn’t a volunteer. He’s just doing his part, he tells me.

NightShift’s MaryAnne Connor was once scared of people in Whalley, but has since discovered the area’s beauty and love. “That’s common,” Connor says as the man walks away. “They’re just so grateful for what we’re doing and they’re friends. Friends help friends.” This is what she wishes people could see. “People are people. I don’t know anybody here that wants to be here by choice,” she says. Feeding those on the streets of Whalley is something they do every night. “I hear often, ‘If it wasn’t for NightShift, I wouldn’t be alive.’ I don’t know how true that is,” she continued, “but this is soul food. It’s not just food.” As Connor surveys the scene, she sighs happily. “I don’t know how, but 10 years just goes by. Then all of the sudden, I think, ‘How did we get here?’ It’s surreal all the time.”

OPTIMISM IS KING

But it hasn’t come easy. The group has faced its share of challenges – “spears” as she refers to them in her book, The Shift, which details the organization’s story – from the business community and even the city. This very day, they were

And it continues to grow. The organization’s thrift store moved to Guildford over the August long weekend, freeing up much-needed space in the ministry’s King George Boulevard headquarters, where they were “bursting at the seams.” Renovation are underway and they will use that space to expand counselling services, as well as creating more office space and a daytime training area. “We just really expanded everything that we’re doing. Next year is going to be a thrilling year.”

So if we’re not treating our weakest members… what does it say for this community?” Though she doesn’t want to move, she said she will if she has to. “If they push people around like cattle, and they end up down on the flats, then our outreach trucks and medical unit can go there. We can go anywhere. Our care centre helps some of the people here, but for the most part it’s people on parole, single moms, families, we do all kinds of therapy here. “But I think the outreach SMALL BEGINNINGS of what we do will move and NightShift began as a we’re OK with that. Hits & Misses

Online shaming is an ugly trend

HIT: Young people in Surrey sometimes get a bad rap but kids like Lauryn Gill, Kaelyn Gill and their friend Reet are giving us another reason to be proud of the city’s youth. The three are selling lemonade on Saturday in Goldstone Park for BC Children’s Hospital (see page 4). Go buy a lemonade from them – and don’t be stingy!

S

ocial media can be a powerful agent for change but we wish one of its latest trends would make like MySpace and just go away. Public shaming – whether it’s targeting water wasters, bad parents, irresponsible pet owners or creepy park guys – is out of control. The latest example is a man in New West’s Queen’s Park, who was accused of touching himself. Police investigated and found no proof of wrongdoing – but not before the man’s photo and defamatory post was shared more than 6,000 times. There’s no doubt this kind of sharing of information online can help nab bad guys. But let’s leave policing to our police and judging to our judges. The Now

MISS: He was unnamed as of press time but we give this week’s miss to the Tory supporter who went off on reporters this week for asking Harper questions about the Duffy trial (how dare they?). He knows the trial is about expenses and not cheating on taxes, right?

Column

Voters are starved for sincerity SoLetItBeDone Tom Zytaruk

So let it be written... I resent it when someone tries to sell me a bridge. This usually happens during election campaigns, figuratively speaking. I wish it wouldn’t. I’d much rather hear, or read, reasoned, honest debate on issues important to Canadians. Most students of the Liberal Arts will sooner or later be introduced to the concept of a straw man argument. It’s a disingenuous technique often used in debate that involves setting up an imagined likeness of your rival, or what he or she is saying, and then attacking the bogus likeness or argument you’ve invented. We’ve all fallen victim to this before.

“The sky is a pretty blue,” you say. “What you’re really saying is that the sky is dark blue, and that’s just dark,” your rival replies. “Dark is depressing. Man, you are so dark and depressing. And that’s totally unlikable and icky. You are icky.” It’s difficult to defend oneself against such low-down dirty trickery. The unfortunate thing is, the straw man argument can be effective because as they say, a sucker is born every minute. The problem is, not only is it intellectually dishonest, the benefits reaped from such chicanery serves the manipulator and no one else. Sure, there will be people who believe the attack ads to be gospel truth, especially when the ads are slammed into their heads ad naseaum on radio and television. But not all of us are stupid. We don’t want to hear the same

old party-sanctioned phrases slithering out of the mouths of campaigners on the nightly news. Intelligent voters want to see signs of independent thought and therefore, intelligence. Voters are starved for sincerity. Treat us like dunderheads and you won’t be getting our vote. At least not mine. Few, I think, would disagree that the current reigning champions of the twisted message are the Conservatives. I’m surprised their political rivals have not re-branded the Tories the Conspicuous Propagandists Party of Canada. Recently, the Conservative campaign machine issued a press release urging voters to “Vote Harper to stop a ‘Netflix Tax.’” “The Prime Minister observed that both Thomas Mulcair and Justin have opened the door to future taxation of Netflix,” the release read. Now, I don’t know if this is true,

and honestly I don’t much care. There are bigger issues out there. But when I read this sentence, the resentment grows. Someone’s trying to sell me a bridge. Furthermore, its author is being childish. The Conservative’s manipulation of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s name doesn’t make me think any less of him. It does make me think less of the Conservatives. We all know what his name is – first, and last – but the Conservatives would have us, with a pinch of sleepy dust or wave of a wand, start thinking otherwise. What real positive bearing can this possibly have on the governing of this country? The Tories aren’t the only party to indulge in re-branding. You’ll remember back in the day, the Liberals insisted on referring to a fledgling Conservative Party as the “Reform Alliance.” The Grits did their level best to entice voters to dismiss the Conservative Party of Canada as the spawn of toenailpickin’ hillbillies. The Canadian Alliance, of course was the forerunner of

today’s Conservative Party. Vancouver Liberal MP Hedy Fry ventured into the surreal years ago when she likened the situation in one Canadian Alliance stronghold, Prince George, to apartheid in South Africa. The Canadian Alliance wanted her head. And the NDP? Well, it’s still early in this election campaign. We’ll see what they do. I won’t be so naïve as to suggest the political parties at all subscribe to the concept that losing while playing fair is better than winning by cheating. Or manipulating. Nor will I be so obtuse as to suggest that old maxim, “It’s not whether you win or lose that counts, but how you play the game,” brings a tear to their eye. But the thing is, many of us voters do subscribe to such wholesome values. Time will tell if the political parties ignore this to their peril. So let it be done... Enjoy Cloverdale’s parks but take your trash with you The Editor, I love Cloverdale. I enjoy our local parks and it pleases me greatly to see so many people going out and enjoying their time in our parks. What frustrates me is the blatant disregard for our park space once user groups are done for the day. It’s great you cleaned up but leaving your garbage entices rodents, crows, raccoons and other critters to come and scatter it around our parks. Please use common sense – pack it in, pack it out. Plain and simple. Here is a photo I took. Maybe I’ll send in a photo 12 hours from then so people can see the mess it will become. It would be advantageous for the city to send bylaw officers periodically as a way to educate and remind people how important it is to leave with their garbage.

The Editor, Re: “Do we own our government or does it own us?” the Now, Aug. 13. I must say that I found Tom Zytaruk’s column interesting. He also seems intent on having us believe Rachel McCallum, Surrey that “mobility rights” are guaranteed us and that court-made law overrides parliamentary law. I phoned to report neighbours who I noticed had their sprinkler on for the second evening in a row (and likely other times that I wasn’t driving by). I phoned at 9 p.m. to report it. They took the info down to give to the day staff as nobody works in the evening. I was told if I saw them watering again to wait and phone the following day to report it. Why doesn’t Surrey employ students or have some of their enforcement staff work evenings when there is more likelihood of catching sprinkling violators? CLOVERDALE — Once all the LEGO bricks are packed up and put away this fall, a new permanent gallery for kids will be built at Surrey Museum. SURREY — A 24-year-old woman who allegedly attacked a three-year-old Labrador retriever last Valentine’s Day has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty following a BC SPCA investigation. If convicted, Lindsey Hirtreiter would face a maximum fine of $75,000, up to two years in jail and up to a lifetime ban on owning animals. Ryder went missing from his owner’s home in Chimney Heights in midFebruary and was later found in a nearby basement suite. The woman was covered in blood and told her landlord she had been attacked by a dog. A four-year-old girl inside the suite was removed by the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Police say it was clear the dog had not attacked her and Hirtreiter was arrested under the Mental Health Act and sent for a psych assessment. At the vet, it was determined the dog had been repeatedly stabbed, forcefully fed jewelry and rings had been stuffed into his eyes. A lighter was found

Thirty-five dogs were seized – including golden retrievers, Dalmations, Pomeranians – as were 16 horses and six cats. Surrey murder trial delayed Russell Bidesi charged in fatal 2011 Christmas Eve shooting SURREY — The murder trial for a man accused of shooting a man to death at a Christmas Eve house party in Surrey in 2011 has been adjourned after the defence lawyer withdrew due to an “ethical and professional responsibility issue.” Russell Bidesi’s trial for allegedly murdering 28-yearold Bradley McPherson was scheduled to begin on Aug. 17. Bidesi is charged with second degree murder. According to police, McPherson was standing up for some people who were being disrespected at the party when he was shot. McPherson did not have a criminal record. “I don’t make this lightly,” said lawyer Darcy Lawrence of withdrawing. “I’m aware of the time that has literally been wasted because of the late application. I’m very much mindful of that and I wish it

hadn’t gone this way, but it has.” Lawrence did not provide any more information about the ethical concern. Justice Jennifer Duncan approved the request and expressed regret to the victim’s family and friends. Duncan said she believed Lawrence had reached “a fundamental fork in the road” in his representation of Bidesi. “Which means that continuing to represent his client would mean Mr. Lawrence runs up against ethical considerations which would impact seriously his reputation in the bar and also his standing with the Law Society,” she said. “Those are very serious matters.” On July 24, Bidesi was sentenced to 30 months in jail in a separate case. He shot Harpreet Sandhu in the face after a dispute over a

taxi cab in Richmond in 2011. Bidesi told the court he was trying to intimidate the victim and that the firearm discharged accidentally. The judge concluded that Bidesi intended to shoot Sandhu but did not intend to kill him and found him not guilty of attempted murder, but guilty of the lesser and included offence of unlawfully committing bodily harm. In May, Bidesi was convicted of manslaughter in the 2012 fatal shooting of Kacey Rogers, 31, of Surrey. Bidesi was the architect of the home invasion that led to Rogers being killed by a shotgun blast through a window of the home. He has not yet been sentenced in that case. Bidesi’s next court appearance in the McPherson case is Sept. 3, to fix a new trial date.

Duncan Gambicourt hopes to get his bike back before he does another Ride to Conquer Cancer starting Aug. 29. His three-year-old Norco Valence C3 was stolen from the back garage of a home in the Cloverdale area on Monday (Aug. 17). Gambicourt is prepping to do his third such charity ride. “I will still do the ride on a borrowed bike if I have to, but mine is all set up the way I like it,” Gambicourt told the Now on Wednesday. He has already reached the $2,500 fundraising minimum required to participate in the two-day Ride to Conquer Cancer, which departs from Cloverdale Fairgrounds. The bike is white with red and white trim. If you have information to share about the theft, call Surrey RCMP’s nonemergency phone line at 604-599-0502.

Members of the Surrey Storm 01A team were all smiles after winning the 2015 U14 Girls Canadian Fastpitch Jamboree in Victoria on Aug. 9, following an extra-innings 2-1 victory over rival Delta Heat 01. The two teams also battled in the finals of the recent provincial championships, with the Storm winning 4-0. In Victoria, the Storm won all nine games they played over the five-day tournament, with six of the nine ending in a “mercy” win for runs scored. “This is a very good team, very dominant,” Storm manager Jill Moreno told the Now. “People expected us to win, and we did.” Also on Aug. 9, the Surrey Storm 01B team won the Western Canadian softball championship in Winnipeg with a 5-0 win over Twin City Angels. The winning triathlete, 17, pedalled a loaner bike at the Games, after irreparable cracks were discovered on the frame of the one he’s used for training and races over the past four years. The broken bike nearly kept him from competing in Alberta. “It was a bit touch and go,” the North Deltan said before departing for the Games. “It was a bit stressful.” Last Thursday (Aug. 13), Milic earned a silver medal in Junior Elite triathlon, finishing the race in 59 minutes, 15 seconds — just two ticks of the clock behind Alberta-based winner Cooper

Earlier in the month, fellow triathletes who train with him launched an online fundraising campaign that quickly netted more than $2,000 for a new bike for Milic.

A pair of Surrey golfers topped the 2015 Canadian Junior Girls Championship at Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton, Sask. Michelle Kim, 18, carded a final-round even-par to win the tournament, which ended Aug. 7. Her third-round 69 propelled her ahead of the competition with a four-stroke lead through 54 holes; she went on to finish the championship at 6 under par.

Meanwhile, the Cervelo company stepped up to loan him a set of wheels for the rest of the race season. “It’s a pretty crazy-expensive sport,” said Susan Milic, Michael’s mother. “He will eventually buy a road bike and new wheels when he has more time, after September. The bike plus wheels will be approximately $7,000, used.” The Junior Elite triathlon race involves an 800-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and five-kilometre run. That’s known as “sprint distance” in the triathlon world — half the Olympic distance. Milic is a top-ranked athlete in the Triathlon Canada Junior Elite series. In mid-September, Milic has been invited to compete at the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final and World Championships. Also of note, Milic was recently given the Gwen Jorgensen Scholarship by the namesake athlete, one of the top triathletes in the world.

“This is probably the biggest achievement that I’ve ever made,” she said in a Golf Canada release. Fellow Surrey native and provincial teammate Hannah Lee finished her final round at 2-under par to claim solo-second at 4-under for the championship. Lee’s round was highlighted by four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 second hole. “I was close to winning it, but

I’m really happy for Michelle. I’ve seen her golf ever since I started playing tournaments, so congrats to her,” said the 15-year-old Lee, who claimed the Juvenile Division title. Last weekend, Lee earned gold in the Individual Female golf tournament at the Western Canada Summer Games in Wood Buffalo, Alta.

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out.
