However, he points out tax deferral offers short-term help, while what is really needed is cash – and cattle – on hand for future operations. This deferral does not help the ranchers attempting to hold on

to their current herds, Pincott notes. He explains the cost per animal will also likely drop with increased stock availability, and once herds are reduced, the producers will need to replace those animals

at some point. To defer income, the breeding herd must have been reduced by at least 15 per cent, and then eligible producers can request a deferral of 30 to 90 per cent from net sales income when filing their 2015

income tax returns. Pincott says the producers who have been buying feed rather than putting up their own are “getting hit really hard” by increased costs. Continued on A5

Chicken wings recalled

A recall has been issued for various store-packaged, cooked chicken wings sold at Canada Safeway stores, including in the 100 Mile House store, because they may contain the toxin produced by staphylococcus bacteria. People are warned not to consume the recalled products that were sold in Safeway locations across Western Canada and in Ontario. Issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) after being triggered by the manufacturer, the recall affects Party

Pack Chicken Wings Hot Salt N Pepper, PPK Wings Mix flavours Hot, Pinty’s Wings Salt and Pepper Hot, and Pinty’s Wings Salt and Pepper Cold, sold up to and including Aug. 14. Safeway Canada spokesperson Betty Kellsey confirms these wings were sold at the 100 Mile House store, and anyone who has any of the affected product on hand should bring it back to Safeway or throw it out. “Customers that do still have it are most welcome and encouraged to return it to the Safeway

store for a full refund, or we [can] replace the product.” The CFIA is verifying recalled products are removed from the marketplace and is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products. No associated illnesses have yet been reported. If other high-risk foods are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings at www.inspec tion.gc.ca, linked under Latest Recalls (which also offers more information on this recall).
