Bill Turner - 1978 Firebird

A

bout three years after our Lincoln Town Car began spending the winters as the only occupant of the two car garage I decided to start restoring my 1978 Firebird. The spring of 2007 brought to me the realization that the “Fire Chicken” that I had owned since 1981 was not getting any newer. (nor was I) Being the second owner of the car meant that I knew most of the history of this car. I had bought it off the first owner instead of a dealer lot so I could trace its history back to the factory. A check with Vintage Pontiac Services gave me a surprise; there had been only 152 base Firebirds shipped to Canada with a four-speed manual transmission. As this made the car fairly rare and the car’s age would definitely make it eligible for collector car status. With this ammunition in hand I was able to convince my other half that the car was worth bringing back to life. The first step was to remove the car from the shelter that it had resided in for the past ten or so years. Next came a thorough wash job and a closer look. This brought the realization that a ground-up rebuild would be in order. With this decision made I was able to find room in a shop to completely dismantle the car and start with a ground-up rebuild. As the job was being done in my “spare” time progress has not been the quickest. By the summer of 2009 the bodywork was complete enough for us to attend our first car show as a work in progress. After that car show the car was put back into the garage for the completion of the rebuild. Over the next two years (again in my spare time) the rest of the bodywork was done, the motor was rebuilt and the Firebird was ready for its first car show in 2012. Some of the trim wasn’t finished but the car was finally drivable. Then came the problem of finding an indoor parking spot for the car as the ’56 pick-up was now sharing garage space with the Lincoln. I managed to find room in a smaller garage for winter parking. The Firebird now spends its winters under cover and during the summer it takes its turn with our other cars on Friday night cruises and other car functions.

20th Anniversary

Dodge Brothers 100th

W

hen you buy a car and restore it there are activities and friends you never ever considered would be part of your life. Here is a short whirlwind story of our car and trip. Start May 2006. Purchased a 1928 Victory 6 Dodge Brothers 4 door sedan. My dear wife Brenda thought I had rocks in my head when she saw it for the first time . Joined the DB club for much needed info and parts. Okay, back to the restoration - 5 years and many happy hours in the shop. Every nut and bolt, what a challenge! I did everything on the car, I even did my own upholstery. I did all the metal work and prep for the painter. We named our car Miss Vicky. In May of 2010 I took the chassis with running drive train to the local show and shine. The favorite question was: Do you have the rest of it? In May of 2011 I took the finished car back to the show and shine and won 1st place -Participants Choice. Wow, all the hard work paid off. Since then I have accepted 5 first place wins. We have taken Miss Vicky on a few longer tours. Kootenay Tour 1200 miles over 9 days, what a blast! Hills were not good, distributer dying a slow death. Made it home okay and have since built a replacement from a 71 Slant 6, works great. Kamloops May Tour 2013 had a great time and many thumbs up. Now to the trip of a life time, the 100th Anniversary of the Dodge Brothers in Detroit Michigan June 22 to

8

Prospectors Show & Shine 2015

the 27 2014. How do you get to Detroit ? Fair Question. Let’s drive Miss Vicky there, it will be a good look into the past and how people traveled. The “you have rocks in your head” look again. After our 9 day trip it was apparent that a/c and heat might be good, maybe a radio might be nice too. Detroit is only 2400 miles from Williams Lake. Oh did I mention one way. We found the perfect answer, a 1989 Country Coach Diesel pusher 38’ long bus. It has every thing we need - lots of room, nice kitchen, queen bed, full bathroom. Brenda is starting to come around and liking this Idea. Now at 24 years old there is going to be some things that need to be fixed. Just to clarify, I do have my Class 1 Air and have driven many different big rigs so this is no stretch for me to drive. I did ask Brenda If she could get her air endorsement so she could drive. Got that look again! Now as I am semi-retired I spent the next 2 months crawling all over this rig. Serviced all from one end to the other with not too much to fix.

Our plan is to take our kayaks and bikes and they fit in the trailer. Kayaks hang on the walls beside the car and bikes up front lashed to the front wall. Car in, tied down, ready to go. We are 62’ long with the trailer so you have to drive like a big rig.

h Anniversary tour 2014

!

o

We spent the next 10 days tripping across Canada visiting family and friends. We would unload Miss Vicky when we needed to get around in the different towns and cities. When we unload we need to have 85’ of space for the whole rig, door down, car off trailer . There are some draw backs to being this big but you just have to look ahead and plan. When we were in Ontario just south of Kenora heading to the border the coach died at the side of the road. Brain in full fix mode - test, test, double test . I don’t know what it is. I call a friend in Williams Lake, Dave Skarra, who is a heavy duty truck mechanic also in VCCC. I just happened to remember his work number and he was there. He diagnosed over the phone. We drove back to the coach ripped up the bed and into the engine I go. Yes it is a loose wire on the solinoid for the fuel shut off just as Dave said. Tighten and good to go. This was the only problem we had on the whole trip. U.S.A. look out - here we come. With our kayaks on board one of our goals was to paddle in the Great Lakes. We were able to go on Superior,Michigan and Huron. Arrived in Detroit June 22. Left the trailer and coach at parking area for the meet. There was a sea of trailers and rv’s. We unloaded and headed to the Hilton where the meet was being held about 6 miles away. There were 85 cars from 1915 to 1938, almost every model they made. Unfortunately there was not a 1914 which would have been the first car that they built. (They being Horace and John Dodge). The DB members topped 310 for the meet. There were outings everyday, some 5 miles, some 30 miles. Now you may know Detroit City has declared bankruptcy. During the times of the industrial boom up till the 80’s they built and built the city, roads, bridges, buildings. Now it is falling apart and

there are difficult times ahead. We saw 15 story apartment buildings abandoned and not just one . We have a picture of a group of three with no windows and starting to collapse. Many homes on the side streets abandoned. Some were burnt, some stripped of all wiring and copper plumbing in order to get some value from the homes. The city has no money to tear them down. Now the roads are something else. The main highways were not too bad but you do have to watch as they do not repair too quickly. On tour days we had about 80 cars to parade to the various points of interests. There would be a patch job that may have been done maybe 30 times - I’m not joking. It looked like a patchwork quilt, all different colours of gravel in the asphalt. I think they must have put a few shovel fulls out and let the vehicles pack it down. A rough gravel road would have been better. Then there was the holes that just were not fixed. I’m talking maybe 3’ x 5’ and 6”deep not uncommon and of course throw in a lot of 1’ round ones. I thought poor Miss Vicky was going to shake apart. But not our dependable Dodge Bothers, she took it in stride. It was our teeth and the rocks in my head that took the beating. MissVicky made us proud, never missed a beat. Our friends from Illinois dented a rear rim on one hole. Our tour was fantastic! What a great committee that put this on. Here are the stops we made: •Dodge Bothers mansion •Ford Mansion and grounds •Greenfield Village and the Ford Museum •Gilmore Car Museum •Ford Piquette Plant •Walter P. Chrysler Museum Yes it is closed to the public (since 2012) but the DB Club pulled a few strings and got the doors opened for us. •Cemetary where the Dodges and the Fords have their mausoleums. here was a swap meet among the DB club members, always something to bring home. We had dinner in the parking lot and of course just a little car talk and fixing. 5 days of great visiting and old cars. The committee hired a photographer to take a picture of all the cars on the lawn of Meadowbrook Hall. He was up in a 40’ man lift to get the right angle. Each of us now have a 36” x 14” photo to remember the trip by. Mine has been framed and is proudly on the wall. We said our goodbyes and on the road again. Went to just south of Toledo Ohio. More visiting with Family and friends for the next 15 days across the states. Paddled in the Missouri River for a few hours too. It was so good to get back into B.C., the best place on earth. Our trip was 5,800 miles in total and it was wonderful. Kevin and Brenda Bourdon. Contact us at bourdon9@telus.net

Neil Muir’s 1948 Chev Aero Sedan Modified B “The Jelly Bean” always loved old cars and trucks. I have owned 3 Willy’s Jeeps, 2 pickups and 1 panel Ihave which I have passed down to my kids and Soosie’s nephew.

Well long story short, we purchased this car 3 years ago from Sue’s brother. How I acquired the car is rather funny. We had a FJ Cruiser and Soosies Brother had about 8 – 10 old cars. So I said if you want it I will trade you for one of your old cars. He said he would trade only one and it was the “Jelly Bean”, which was the one I wanted. So we joined the car Club. The club and it’s awesome members has been fun, when we have time we really enjoy the outings. The car was built in Langley and modified by a man who passed away from Cancer not long after. Pat bought the car and the rest is history. May we make his legacy live on, in all the old beautiful cars that are around. Good Cruisin and see you at the Prospector’s car show in 2015.

Wayne and Julie Wark 1953 Fargo Spring Special.

fter walking by this truck in a Kamloops backyard for 3 years, one day the elderly owner was out in the yard so I introduced myself. Connie Myers was 97 years old. He related to me how he bought the Fargo from a neighbor in Prespatou in 1955 for 600 dollars and used it on his farm until he moved to Kamloops. The Fargo sat for many years back on the farm with Connie thinking he would fix it up one day. He brought it to Kamloops about 1975 keeping it licensed. It ran poorly, no brakes, many parts missing, but he drove it occasionally. After talking for several hours he decided that he would part with it if I would rebuild the truck back to original. He gave me a price and was very clear he had never made so much money on selling a used vehicle. We shook hands on the deal promising when it was done I would bring the truck back to Kamloops for him to have a ride. It took 2 years of work to restore, thanks to my wife and a good friend we managed to complete the task. Connie Meyers passed away 3 months before the truck was completed. Hopefully he would have been happy with the finished product. We had no idea the amount of work I dragged home that day. A farm truck from north of Fort St John that earned its keep for 20 years hauling anything that they could fit in the box. Semi- retirement after the move to Kamloops. The gumbo mud from the farm was still caked to the bottom of the truck when we started the rebuild.

tirelessly on restoring a timepiece from the past. Sitting behind the Fargo at a car show, hearing all the “ I remember when” stories makes the effort all worthwhile. The challenges of the restoration proved more difficult as Fargo parts are not readily available. The paint job is factory spring special 2 tone green. 1953 is the only year with a pilothouse cab and the full size rear fenders. The grill was only used in 1952 and 1953. Fargo did a total cab and front end redesign in 1954 with the box and rear fenders staying the same till the 1980s.

The experience gained on this project has given me a great respect for the many people that work •

his vehicle was purchased by Ron Rasmussen in 2007. It had been in the Shuttleworth family since it was purchased from Beath Motors in Quesnel and had spent the last 17 years of that in storage. Originally, the 1964 Ford Galaxy was blue with a white top and had a standard transmission with a three in the tree shifter. Ron had Terry's Auto Lab rebuild the stock 390 motor into a rollerized motor with aluminum heads, aluminum intake headers and MSD ignition. The 3 speed transmission was replaced with a 5 speed Tremec TKO with a floor shifter. Wilwood brakes were installed all around, rack and pinion steering and a hydraulic clutch was also installed . The wheels were upgraded to American Racing Wheels and a dual exhaust was added. Bodywork and paint was done by Superior Auto Body. Ron drove the car for a short time then stored it in my shop for several years. When he decided to sell it ...I just had to buy it. We love driving this big boat of a car as it “floats” down the road...it is a cruiser! Carol and Gordon Phillips - Quesnel BC

Led Szmeks ‘51 Merc Ratrod.

I

know, I know. I can see all the eyes rolling at the word ratrod, but I have always been a fan of building something that looks like a ratrod on the outside and has a bit of thouroughbred under the skin. With that in mind I started collecting pieces about 5 years ago while looking for body parts for the ‘49 Ford pickup I was driving at the time. I was unable to find the parts I wanted but did stumble across a complete ‘51 Merc pick up. I purchased it and put it under a tarp for future attention. In 2013 the ‘49 was sold and work on the ‘51 started in earnest. First of all a complete 2”x 4” rectangular tube frame was constructed including a triangulated 4 bar rear suspension with coil over shocks. Front suspension is a ‘46 Ford car solid axle sprung by a Posies Big Block cross spring. All hair pins and mounts were fabricated by me in house. By the way I should probably mention here that I am chassis builder, having built Sprint car chassis and Flat track motorcycle chassis for more years than I care to remember. Luckily I was gifted an old Chevy 1 ton crew cab that would donate it’s 454 cu. in. engine and rear diff and I found a 4L80E transmission that fit the bill for what I had in mind . The engine came apart and was just like new inside as it had spent it’s life running on propane so all it really needed was a set of main bearings, new valve springs, lifters, and a new Comp Thumper cam to make it sound like a big block should. The engine was topped off with a Holley Terminator EFI, exhaust is a set of in house Lakes style headers running into a set of 3” exhaust pipes ending in a set of Flowmaster 40’s. Trans shifting is handled by a Fast shifter module. Next came a nice 6” haircut for the cab. I fabricated

a custom nose/ grill and the box was shortened to 4’ in length. I also fabricated the 26 imperial gallon fuel tank from 1/8” aluminum. The combination of all this produced a very low, wide looking ride that so far has got a lot of attention on the road and in parking lots with loads of people taking pictures. The truck is, of course, still a work in progress with all of the niceities like windshield wipers, heater, side windows, upholstery, etc, etc, still to be finished off. We are having far too much fun cruising it around so finishing work is slow. I would like, at this time to thank my friend Rick Nelson for the countless items from suspension pieces to nuts and bolts that he has unselfishly donated to this project, and to my wife Mecedes for putting up with all of the nonsense that goes into building a hot rod and helping me with things that required another set of hands.
