Crash near 150 Mile House claims one life Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer A single vehicle crash near 150 Mile House early Tuesday has claimed the life of a 55-year-old man from Prince George.

NEWS Coyote Rock land development underway Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer There’s a flurry of activity at the Coyote Rock development south of Williams Lake.

For two weeks Lake Excavating has been clearing land for the Williams Lake Indian Band project which will see a new frontage road, 10 commercial lots, 28 residential lots and a new reservoir above the existing golf course.

“So far six of our band members are working every single day,” smiled Coun.

Willie Sellars as he waved at the driver of a haul truck coming up from an area being cleared.

“Our band members are running haul trucks, operating equipment and doing

site running.”

Every day as the project gets bigger more people are being added to the work force from his community, he said.

“We have an employment list with people chomping at the bit to work.”

Down the road some band members will be trained to do surveying and fence building.

The band’s economic development officer Kirk Dressler said Lake Excavating has donated $50,000 to an education fund for training.

“We are in the second week of a 16-week construction program,” Dressler explained.

The new development and its reservoir will tie into the existing water and sewer infrastructure at Sugar Cane.

A new water treatment centre that has been in the works for three years will be fully commissioned in a couple of months, meaning residents at the reserve will no longer be under the boil water advisory

they’ve had forever, Sellars said.

Existing power lines will be relocated closer to the highway, along with lines for cable and natural gas.

Once they are ready for building, the quar-

ter of an acre residential lots will fall under the First Nation land management, which means they are leased, Dressler explained.

“We aren’t under the Indian Act so there’s more flexibility for us

to create terms for leases. We expect the leases will be for 99 years.”

The project is excellent for the Williams Lake area, said Lake Excavating owner Trevor Seibert.

“This is a beautiful piece of property,” he said as he stood outside his onsite shipping container office and looked out toward the lake below.

His company has been pursuing joint ventures with WLIB for more than a year and began partnering for projects at Gibraltar and Mount Polley Mines.

In fact, since the Aug. 4, 2014 tailings impoundment breach at Mount Polley, the two entities have been partnering to do restoration work.

“Here at Coyote Rock there’s a real op-

portunity for people to learn,” Seibert said.

“There’s a better variety so they will get to do different things.”

With offices in Vancouver and Alberta, Lake Excavating is able to move employees around to different work sites, he added.

“Once they have the training, they can go anywhere. There aren’t many companies that will take people with no experience and train them.”

Crews are working seven days a week, 12 hours a day, on a four days on and four days off rotation.

Recently the band reach an agreement with the Ministry of Transportation for the delivery of the frontage road to coincide with the highway upgrade planned for the vicinity, Dressler said.

Woman charged with arson Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer A 51-year-old female has been charged with arson after setting several small grass fires along Highway 97 on Monday afternoon.

“She will be appearing in court today,” Williams Lake

RCMP Sgt. Rick LeBeuf said Tuesday morning.

At around 4 p.m.

Monday afternoon the Williams Lake Fire Department responded to the fires which were burning directly below the highway between Bob Paterson Homes and the Husky Station.

The fires were put out promptly, but could have spread quickly because conditions remain dry in the region.

Witnesses saw the woman walking along setting the fires and were able to provide a description, Fire Chief Des Webster said.

Police arrest man carrying machete, investigate break-in Police responded to a domestic dispute, weapons possession and theft from vehicles during the weekend said Sgt. Rick LeBeuf of the Williams Lake RCMP detachment Monday.

On Saturday, Aug. 15 at approximately 6:03 p.m. an abandoned 911 call was received from a residence in the 400 block of Gibbon Street.

Officers attended and were advised by the homeowner that her ex-common-law partner was in her home against conditions of an undertaking forbidding him from being there.

The 45-year-old was arrested for breaching his conditions. He was released to appear in court on Sept. 9, 2015. *** At 11:44 a.m. on Aug. 16, police received a report that a wallet had been stolen from a white Ford while it was parked in the 200 block of Dodwell Street.

After brainstorming, Blackall and Murray decided on a family-friendly event and chose to run the barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m.

The time frame will allow working parents to bring their children and give people more time to visit than if it was held over a lunch hour, they said.

This family event will feature activities for kids, machines for viewing, information booths, etc. Another main attraction will be a bouncy castle for kids.

As a small community, it is nice to raise awareness and use this as a social event within our town, the organizers said.

Instead of asking for large donations for the barbecue, they’ve been soliciting smaller ones from more people and the response from the community has been great, they added. For example, one company has donated a door prize while another is donating paper plates and napkins.

The barbecue will

take place in the lower fields of the Stampede Grounds, where there are picnic tables and washrooms for public use.

Finning and Gibraltar hold frequent barbecues and fundraising events at their workplace, but this time wanted to make an event on a larger scale and bring more community involvement. “It would be nice to see more people from the community at this event, than the majority being our employees,” they said.

Finning and Gibraltar Mine are teaming up to host a charity barbecue for United Way on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the Stampede Grounds.

Organizers Kirstie Blackall and Krista Murray said they hope it will be an opportunity to promote United Way and the local organizations that benefit from its funding.

Murray, the Superintendent of Administration at Gibraltar Mine, said the barbecue was the idea of one of the mine’s unionized employees Chad Beadman.

“We host a number of fundraising events at work during our annual United Way Campaign, but Chad suggested we should do something in Williams Lake to promote United Way,” Murray said.

Blackall has been Finning’s receptionist for just over a year, and has seen United Way fundraising barbecues at her workplace grow from making a few hundred dollars in the beginning to the latest one garnering $1,850.

United Way is a charitable organization that gives people the option of donating to a Community fund of their choice or directing donations to a specific program or charity.

Murray said many employees at the mine choose to have their donation dollars go to the United Way - Williams Lake Community Fund.

Re p r e s e n t a t i v e s from community and workplaces that fundraise for United Way sit on the Williams Lake Community Impact Council.

This year the council dispersed $97,000 to the community.

“The ask for funds far exceeded the pot of money we had to give out,” Murray said of this year’s round of applications, noting the council tries to give

ar be it from me to argue with political leaders over whether or not Canada is in a recession, but there are some economic issues I wonder about.

It seems we do anything, well, almost anything, to “grow” the economy and create jobs. We exploit our resources or give control of them to foreigners. We barge ahead with whatever might make a profit without considering the consequences.

Anything seems to be OK in terms of resources, but we’re picky about some enterprises. Like liquor revenues are good, marijuana money is bad.

Case in point. B.C.’s profits from alcohol sales dropped from $929.6 million in 2013 to $877 million in 2014. Is it a coinFrench cidence that the Connection Province has gone all out to make Diana French it easier to buy booze?

Does anyone know why revenues were down? Does anyone know how the cost of dealing with the crimes, health and social problems resulting from alcohol abuse balances with the benefits from liquor sales?

According to a recent report, Washington state’s revenue from its first year of marijuana sales was $70 million. That’s expected to grow, especially if the excise tax is lowered.

It’s a piddling amount compared to B.C.’s liquor profits, but how much did Washington state save by not having to police pot sellers and users? Interesting to note the marijuana dispensers say there is a wide variety of customers, many of them respectable people from the neighbourhood — “good” people who enjoy a puff or two. Sounds like the same folks who drink in moderation. *** The long running Chretien and Mulroney governments were brought down by scandals. Will the Harper government be brought down by the Duffy affair? Or are we so inured to what used to be considered scandalous that we think anything goes providing it doesn’t hurt the economy? *** Question: Why don’t the incumbents in any election run on their record instead of bribing voters with goodies?

Saluting 4-H members The animals the public buys tonight at the annual 4-H Show and Sale are locally grown with the most attentive care.

Not only will they be of the highest quality, but every purchase will help build the next generation of ranchers and farmers in our communities.

These young 4-H members have worked hard to raise their animals and deserve the community’s support.

Admittedly, many of the youth find it difficult to let go of their projects, but before you know it they are planning next year’s.

Club members have to help each other during the show and sale if they want a break from the care and supervision of their animals.

Unless there is a situation that could be considered dangerous, such as wrestling the four pigs used in the swine judging into the show ring, the kids are on their own.

There are supervisors, judges and club leaders hovering nearby, but the youth are responsible for setting up their displays and taking care of their animals, making sure they are weighed in, groomed, fed, watered and walked if needed.

And reports from one club leader suggest the youth don’t get to participate in the show and sale if they don’t show that they have done the work necessary to sell that animal.

they must also keep careful records about what they feed them and their daily care routines.

Long before their animals come to the sale, the 4-Hers have learned through various judging rallies what traits to look for, that will for instance make a good market lamb, beef, or swine project for sale.

During the sale they are tested on this knowledge against the knowledge of an experienced judge.

In the beef ring, for example four animals are brought in and given a standing by the judges of first, second, third and fourth with reasons for their decisions.

Then the 4-H members come in with their own judging cards and place the animals in what they think are the top four positions and list the reasons for the placement on their own judging cards.

The senior members are also required to give oral presentations for the judges on why they placed the animals or projects in the way they did.

Congratulations to all of the 4-H club members. As we observed while touring around the Williams Lake Stockyards, your hard work paid off in spades.

t has been an honour to spend two years in the role of Minister for Community Sport and Cultural Development, however, it is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the new Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, as well as the Minister Responsible for the Liquor Distribution Branch.

As I reflect over the last two years some of the highlights include negotiating a $2.76 billion deal with the federal government over 10 years to provide much needed infrastructure funding and security for local governments.

Having served in local government I know how important these projects are for communities. I was also pleased to be a part of the negotiations with the federal governMLA ment for the $109 Musings million dollar fund to support local Coralee Oakes governments to improve mostly water, wastewater and road infrastructure.

On the sport side I was so pleased that the Canada Winter Games were so successful.

We had originally targeted an economic return between $70-90 million and the final figure was $123.4 million.

My new portfolio is very dear to my heart.

Having served fourteen years as the manager of the Quesnel Chamber of Commerce, I know how critical small businesses are to local economies. As the only province in Canada that has received an A grade from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business for cutting red tape, I am confident that in my work as minister I will continue to spearhead regulatory reform while supporting economic development and job creation.

As the Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, as well as the Minister Responsible for the Liquor Distribution Branch, I look forward to hearing from you on how these changes have benefited our communities here in the Cariboo, as well as discussing how we can best move forward.

There will be a lot for me to learn in this new role, but I look forward to all the challenges and rewards. Although I will be taking on new responsibilities as minister, I remain committed to my role as your local representative and to promoting initiatives that put the best interest of our communities first.

Still a choice to be made on climate change Editor: Some of the greatest examples of genius today are the chosen few in society we deem so or who we have chosen to lead.

Out of the entire mass of the human population, though, there’s sometimes a person who can excel in this way and exceed expectations of even the most notable of people, who appear to have it all figured out.

I met one of these people recently when I noticed him picking up cigarette butts out of ash trays to later break open and roll up for smoking.

He had a bag of empties he was carrying with him and after I found out he doesn’t drink or use drugs we began to talk about the environment.

He explained to me how he sees the problem of global warming being no more complicated than the solution for it.

He then went on to connect the dots from what people have to say, whose opinions on the subject are respected today and to back in time many years.

He told me how the current president of the U.S. believes the storms we’ve been experiencing are going to get bigger and last longer.

How the president before him had said America is addicted to oil and how a former first lady, many years ago, had made the claim that the best way to deal with the problem of addiction is to just say no.

He then explained to me what the most important thing he learned about loss is — that de-

nial can be used as a tool, or a weapon, whether on a personal level or in society as a whole.

Then he told me the most interesting thing I’ve ever heard in my life about a famous physicist who recently said the brain is no more than a machine and about another scientist, who’s working on a theory that might prove the behaviour of denial, may explain why we haven’t been able to find life on other planets.

That’s when he said the problem of global warming, or its solution, is only a matter of choice and it’s up to each and every one of us to determine what our future is.

Then, he just walked away.

Gaeil Farrar Staff Writer The Williams Lake Stockyards cafe is a going concern this week as owners Donna Bergen and Sabrina Dyck serve breakfast all day during the annual 4-H Show and Sale along with other homemade lunches and snacks.

The menu includes chicken fingers, soups, wraps, salads, hamburgers, fries and onion rings, hot dogs, and homemade pies and baking.

Bergen says they make their soups and baking from scratch and pride themselves on the homemade goodness of their menu.

The duo took over

the restaurant in February and also offer catering service.

The stockyards cafe is open regularly on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., but is also open for special events on Saturdays and for scheduled sales at the stockyards.

On those dates they stay and serve until the last animal is sold and everyone is ready to go home.

Most regular livestock sales are scheduled for Thursdays .

The next regular livestock sale at the Williams Lake Stockyards is coming up on Thursday, Aug. 27.

“We will be open until the last sale is done,” Bergen says.

The BC Wildfire Service has received reports of people not complying with the

Within the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction, campfires are not allowed west of the Fraser River. Campfires are allowed east of the Fraser River, but they cannot be larger than 0.5 metres wide by 0.5 metres high.

Enforcement of open burning prohibitions is done by the ministry’s Compliance and Enforcement Branch, the Conservation Officer

Service and the RCMP. Charges may be laid or fines assessed under the Wildfire Act and wildfire regulation if the responsible party is identified.

Members of the public can report abandoned campfires or open burning violations by calling 1-800663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.

The more information they can provide about the location, activity and people involved (including licence plate numbers), the easier it will be to investigate

the incident.

As recent wildfire activity in the province has shown, wildfires can have far-reaching implications. Even one human-caused wildfire is too many.

Entertainment A R Culture T S New direction for Cariboo Idol Sage Birchwater Special to Tribune/Advisor Robert Fry of CaribooRadio.com brought five of this year’s eight Cariboo Idol 2015 entertainers to the Aug. 13 Performances in the Park stage in Boitanio Park.

This is the ninth year Cariboo Idol has given local musicians a chance to strut their stuff in front of an audience.

This year Cariboo Idol is not a competition, explains Fry. Once the Cariboo Idol 2015 venues have all been played, all the artists will get a chance to record their work in a recording studio in late September.

Tyrell Norton of 108 Mile House led off the Cariboo Idol entertainers. Born in Chilliwack, he has been performing on stage for four years, and was part of the Cariboo Idol competition last year.

Though she has been singing in front of an audience for as long as she can remember, this is her first year in the Cariboo Idol contest.

Wyatt Armes of the Springhouse 4-H Club had to do some convincing to get his steer to the weigh scales.

Andrew Yurkiw of the Springhouse 4-H Club and Emma Pfleiderer of the Chimney Valley 4-H Club lead steers for the weigh in Saturday at the annual 4-H Show and Sale at the Williams Lake Stockyards which wraps up this evening with the annual sale which starts at 5:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 19 with the parade of champions.

Finning and Gibraltar Mine are teaming up to host a charity barbecue for United Way on Tuesday, Aug. 25 in the Stampede Grounds from 4 to 7 p.m.

In addition to the barbecue there will be activities for children including a bouncy castle and machines for viewing.

The time frame will allow working parents to bring their children and give people more time to visit than if it was held over a lunch hour.

Organizers Kirstie Blackall and Krista Murray said they hope it will be an opportunity to promote United Way and the local organizations that benefit from its funding.

Cariboo Bethel Church in Williams Lake will be celebrating its 50th anniversary on Friday, Sept. 25 with a meet and greet from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church, followed by a family picnic on Saturday, Sept.

26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the home of Elmer and Shirley Thiessen. That evening a service will also be held at the church.

40th Horsefly Fall Fair celebrates country life urday, Aug. 22 and like this year’s theme, Country Life, offers a taste of what living in the Horsefly area has to offer.

There will be covered wagon rides, a scarecrow building activity for children, and all kinds of farm and garden exhibits on display that have been entered by children and adults.

Expect to see a huge quilting and needle craft section, lots of canning, baking,

cut flowers, and livestock entries, McNie says. “It really is quite amazing.”

The Horsefly Volunteer Fire Department will have their fire truck there for children to explore. There will also be a fun fundraiser called chicken poop bingo.

She says SOUL Food will be there selling ice cream and veggie snacks and the Seniors Wellness Society will have hamburgers and corn on the cob

on offer. Thanks to United Concrete she says there will also be cotton candy available.

During the event the Horsefly citizen of the year is also announced, McNie says.

In conjunction with the fair there will also be a farmers market with longer hours set up in the little mall across the street from the school grounds and Horsefly hall where exhibits will be set up.

The Horsefly Fall Fair competition is

open to residents and summer guests residing in Horsefly area which includes Miocene, Big Lake, and Likely areas.

Registration and non-perishable entries will be accepted Thursday, Aug. 20 between 4 and 7 p.m.

Other entries and registration will be accepted Friday, Aug. 21 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Livestock entries need to be pre-registered on Thursday or Friday and may be

brought to the grounds on Saturday only between 9 and 9:30 a.m.

Livestock judging will take place between 10:30 a.m. and noon

Saturday.

General admission fee is $2. There is no admission charge for children ages 12 and under or for exhibitors.

The 40th annual Horsefly Fall Fair coming up Saturday is a great little fair celebrating country life.

And it is a chance for area residents to get together for a visit after a busy summer.

Buddhist exhibit well received Organizers of the Maitreya Loving Kindness Tour of ancient and sacred Buddhist relics were overwhelmed with how well the exhibit was

received in Williams Lake last weekend.

“The tour managers were happy with the turn out, expressing that the interest from our little city far

exceeded their expectations,” says local organizer Colleen O’Neill of the Gendun Drubpa Buddhist Centre in Williams Lake which invited the exhibit to the community.

“They were touched by the kindness and generosity of our town.”

She says the exhibit was well received with 70 people in attendance for the Friday evening opening and a total of 390 people visiting the exhibit throughout the weekend.

“The feedback from

visitors was very positive and people were often very moved by what they were seeing,” O’Neill says.

The exhibit was pre-

sented at Thompson Rivers University in Williams Lake Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday before heading to Saskatchewan.

Performances in the Park best ever in July and August. It has been my pleasure to once again coordinate Performances in the Park.

So while I am the face of the event there are many hands who make the work easy. Williams Lake is a truly fantastic community.

Angela Sommer of Angelkeys Music Studio has been the key organizer of this year’s Performances in the Park which wraps up this Thursday evening with the final concert of the season.

I believe we had 500plus people coming out each and every night.

We were fortunate to be able to book around some big festivals such as Arts on the Fly, Arts Wells and others and secure fantastic national artists.

We extended one evening by one hour to accommodate two extra performers who were in town that day.

The audience feedback about the addition of vendors was very positive. Most people would like to see more next year.

Vendors were happy with the setup, as well.

While this is what the audience sees, this event would not be possible without our many supporters and sponsors.

The Lifepak 15 cardiac monitor/defibrillator has been purchased and is being prepped for delivery.

The unit will be maintained and serviced by the Interior Health Authority.

Although it has been a slow process to get the Lifepak 15, it looks like the whole process is coming to fruition.

The two Food Fairs at Tatla Lake have raised a significant amount of cash for the WCHCS and there will be more on this in a separate article.

Little Britches Rodeo rides into lakecity Hundreds of future rodeo stars roped and rode during the weekend in Williams Lake during the Little Britches Rodeo Finals.

Elementary-school-aged athletes from around the province converged at the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds for the event, where participants competed in barrel racing, stake racing, pole bending, goat tail tying, dummy roping, steer riding, calf tying, breakaway roping and chute dogging.

Always a fixture on the Little Britches and Williams Lake High School Rodeo scene, Williams Lake’s Willie Crosina was on hand to call all the action in the announcer’s booth over the two-day event.

From the Cariboo Lac La Hache’s Will Roberts, Ryan Roberts, Williams Lake’s Melissa Pinchbeck, Reese Rivet, Cordell Pinchbeck, Conway Pinchbeck, 150 Mile House’s Lauren Bedford, Isaac Bedford and Brock Everett competed in their respective junior and senior divisions.

A free soccer camp is running this week at the Lake City secondary Columneetza campus field.

The camp goes from 9:30 a.m. until noon and is offered free of charge to boys and girls aged seven to 12 years of age. Players will be divided into small groups by age and led by camp coaches. Sessions involve skill development, team play, snack breaks (provided), tournament games, and there will be contests and prizes for all.

All participants will receive a soccer ball and a camp T-shirt. Soccer shoes and shin pads are optional.

Registration is still available by dropping by the field prior to camp start time.

Saturday, Aug. 22 Memorial Race Thunder Mountain Speedway hosts its Memorial Race at the local race track.

This will be a regular season points race featuring all classes including bone stock mini, pro mini and street stock.

Qualifying starts at 5 p.m. with racing getting underway at 6 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 24 to Friday, Aug. 28 and Monday, Aug. 31 to Friday, Sept. 3 Rookie hockey The city is hosting a rookie hockey camp for children five to nine years old at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex. Learn hockey fundamentals including skating, passing, shooting and maneuvering on the ice.

Participants must be able to get up by themselves and on the ice and take a few steps prior to registration.

Cops for Cancer pedalling for cancer research and support Williams Lake RCMP members are pedalling to make a difference in the lives of kids with cancer and their families.

The Cops for Cancer Tour de North team will ride this September to raise money for kids affected by the disease.

This year’s tour begins in Dawson Creek and will span close to 850 kilometres on its way to the group’s final destination in Williams Lake.

During Cops for Cancer’s 14 years, riders have raised more than $2.3 million for pediatric cancer research and support programs for Camp Good Times (www.campgoodtimes. org).

B.C. set to take on U.S. Three Williams Lake rugby players will have the opportunity later this month to compete with Team BC as the provincial U18 women’s team plays a pair of matches against the newly formed U.S. U18 women at Brentwood College School on Vancouver Island.

Laura Pfleiderer, Emma Pfleiderer and Carleigh Walters are fresh off a win over the Prairie Wolfpack — an all-star team of players from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba — at the Western Canadian Championships in Kelowna earlier this month and

the B.C. women are anxious to prove themselves against the nascent American side in the games on Aug. 21 and Aug. 23.

“Our team framework is already in place,” Team BC head coach Marius Felix said. “And we will have the opportunity

to train three times prior to our first game against the U.S. I expect a highly athletic and motivated American squad, and see this as a massive challenge and opportunity for the B.C. players.

I anticipate there will be several players from both squads who may one day play for their respective national senior teams.”

Felix, who also coaches Brentwood’s senior girls 15 side, will be assisted by his fellow Brentwood coaches Steve Cowie, Jen Ross and Dave Grisdale.

The roster, announced last week, named sisters Laura and Emma, and Walters, back to the squad.

Meanwhile, the U.S. coaches are eager to test their team against players of the calibre produced in B.C. “B.C. has such a tremendous reputation as a stronghold in the Rugby Canada landscape, particularly with its women’s programs,” U.S. coach Tam Breckenridge said.

“We know coming in that the B.C. team will be well coached and very rugby savvy. These games will provide a good opportunity to measure where we are in terms of program development.

“In addition, being

able to travel to Vancouver Island for these two games will allow the players an opportunity to train alongside the U20 team and attend its first match against Canada.

Hopefully this will serve to inspire them both for the short term as they prepare for the games with BC as well as for the long-term, as they develop into our national team of the future.”

The games will also provide Rugby Canada with the opportunity to see the B.C. players in action with an eye on Canada’s plans to name a U18 national team in the near future, as well as see what the future of U.S. rugby may look like.

This is the first tour for the U.S. National Women’s team at the U18 level. The U.S. roster will be drawn from across the country, including the rugby hotbeds of California, Washington, Utah and New York.

“There will be a mix of athleticism and physicality, some experience mixed in with a lot of youth and excitement,” Breckenridge said.

“The players have demonstrated an ability to adapt to the patterns of play stressed by the coaching staff, which we hope will carry across in these first real competitive opportunities.”

Lakecity girls keep racing event on track for dad LeRae Haynes Special to Tribune/Advisor Two sisters from Williams Lake keep their dad’s memory alive every summer at the annual vintage motorcycle rally at the historic O’Keefe Ranch in Vernon B.C. Savannah Nadeau and Danielle Schultz have been attending the races as long as they can remember, and this year celebrated the event’s 27th birthday with friends, family, and riders from across the province.

An event planner in the Okanagan, Savannah has taken over organizing the race. She said that she loves the event world and that this event in particular gives her a great deal of drive and passion.

“It’s a lot of work, like putting on any type of event, but the end result is always so rewarding,” she explained. “It’s important that this event keeps going because for me and my family, it keeps my dad’s memories alive.

“It’s a weekend many racers look forward to every year and I want to be able to deliver that to them. It’s also important

She said her dad, Dan Schultz, raced at O’Keefe from the very beginning.

“He was one of the main racers who showed up every year and won many trophies. He did the flaming wall stunt as well as another one, where his friend Rob Prisk laid on his back with a board over him creating a jump, and my dad rode over him, getting air,” she added.

“The motorcycle rally was an exciting annual event, and a great get-

together for family and friends.”

Both sisters raced successfully at the event, and Nadeau’s younger sister, Danielle Schultz, also does the flaming wall stunt in memory of her dad. This year she opted to ride through the wall with no actual flames, in honour of B.C.’s firefighters battling forest blazes throughout the province.

“I do the fire wall because it helps bring people to the event, and as a memorial for my dad. It’s not just a crazy stunt to me: it’s something that I share with my dad,” she said.

“When I go through the wall, my thoughts aren’t on the wall itself.

I concentrate on my dad and I know he will keep me safe so I don’t need to worry. He may be gone, but when it comes to the stunt he is right there beside me.”

Nadeau said her dad was the one who taught her how to ride dirt bikes and also how to flat track race.

“My favorite memory was my first year of racing and learning how to ride on the track. It was the one year that this event actually didn’t happen at O’Keefe Ranch but at the Vernon

race track, off to the side on a roughly built track,” she continued. “I was the only girl racing and I was so nervous, but I had my dad there cheering me on right at the sidelines which gave me the confidence to keep going.”

She stated her main goal is to make the races at O’Keefe more successful every year by building it bigger, having more races, more Show n’ Shine bikes and more guests to come and see what vintage flat track racing is all about.

“Other things I would like to see at this event is a youth race, intermission acts and a swap meet. All these things will come in time as I begin to build a team behind me to help produce this event,” she said.

“Through all this, though, I want to keep that vibe of a family gettogether weekend.”

“I think my dad would be very proud,” Schultz said.

“He always said he wanted to keep the event going, and I believe my sister and I can do that.

She did an amazing job this year, and I know my dad was up there patting her on the back.”

Forcier, Barry Lyn September 3, 1947 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; August 12, 2015

B

arry passed away peacefully on August 12 surrounded by family and friends in Crofton, BC. Barry was born in New Westminster, BC on September 3, 1947. He was predeceased by his mother Lorrene and his father Albert.

Survived by his wife Kathy, siblings Terry (Bonnie). Janet and Delbert (Roberta), children, Troy (Ingrid), Trina (Terry), Clayten (Sarah), grandchildren, Devon, Casey and Skye as well as coworkers TJ and Liz. Barry grew up in the Quesnel area and moved to Williams Lake in 1972 to start a floor business. While in the Cariboo, Barry served as one of the youngest Rotary Club presidents and managed the Williams Lake Stampeders hockey club for several years. The family spent many weekends traveling around the beloved province hunting, fishing and motorbiking with a homemade motor home complete with a corvette engine. Barry was passionate about driving and designed a truck rodeo course that was replicated for a World Exhibition in New Orleans.

Barryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love of boating drew him to Vancouver Island in the mid 80â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where he spent most of the remainder of his life.

Barry, throughout his career, also owned and operated a seafood business and a trucking firm. In recent years he was proud of Tidal Blinds, the business he started with his sweetheart Kathy, Barry always had the latest technological gadgets and had many passions including playing the guitar, seafood, dogs, golf, fine wines and a good cigar; he lived life to the fullometer! His family will always enjoy Barryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s humor and gift of knowing what really matters in life: friends, family, love and fun. Barry succumbed to a lengthy battle with cancer, staying positive to the end, and the family would like to thank all the VIHA staff, the many wonderful and caring care staff and nurses also Doctors: V.
