Cancer Society creates new fundrasier Angling ban FOR THE TOWNSMAN

Ready, set, SOAR! There is an exciting new fundraising event happening in the East Kootenay. On Saturday Oct. 3 at Jim Smith Lake in Cranbrook, we invite East Kootenay residents to come paddle, run and bike with us, all in support of the Canadian Cancer Society! The Soggy Otter Adventure Race (SOAR) features three great outdoor sports: kayaking, trail running, and mountain biking – with some fun surprises thrown in! The race is designed to be challenging yet fun for all ages and skill levels. You’ll be paddling around the

lake, biking for 7km, and running for 5km (not necessarily in that order!) You can put together a team of three participants and do it Relay style, or challenge yourself to go it alone. “We already know that about half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living and staying active, so putting together an event that gets friends and families outside utilizing this natural playground that we live in seemed like a no brainer.” Says Rob Porter of Just Liquid Sports, one of the event organizers. SOAR is a unique event this is not your regular triath-

lon! Having the three race components happening in and around Jim Smith Lake, you can chose to do the route once or see how many times you can complete the entire circuit during the allotted time. In developing the event, we are working together with community groups like Wild Horse Bike Club and Backyard Traveler, all with the hope of engaging people’s interest in being active far beyond event day. The event will also include a post-race BBQ and entertainment, kid’s zone, and vendor booths. Event organizers are also thrilled to announce the Heid

Out Restaurant and Brewhouse as the Founding Sponsor for the race. “After all, their Soggy Otter Ale helped with some of the creativity that went into the planning!” Porter jokes. Registration is capped to ensure smooth execution of the event, so avoid disappointment and get your team registered early! Registration forms can be picked up and dropped off at Just Liquid Sports, The Canadian Cancer Society office or the Paw Shop on 10th Avenue. They are also available for purchase online at Snapd East Kootenay’s website.

Effective Saturday, fishing in some streams and rivers is prohibited due to low flows TOWNSMAN STAFF

The province announced it is suspending angling for the southern Kootenays due to ongoing warm water temperatures and low flows. Announced on Thursday, the suspension will begin Saturday, Aug. 15 and continue through to Sept. 15. It will suspend virtually all angling in streams and rivers in Wildlife Management Units 4-3 through 4-9. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations noted that the closure has been put in place to protect fish stocks at a time when they are vulnerable due to low flows and high water temperatures.
