Lifestyle plays a huge part in how healthy we are. Healthy living is about making smart lifestyle choices for today and for the future. Social networks, eating right, physical fitness, emotional wellness and spiritual wellness are important components of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. This Guide provides contacts for local sports, groups, services, literacy, rehabilitation and general interest programs, festivals and activities. CHILDREN & YOUTH Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) Family Programs

Qualified early childhood educators lead learning activities, including stories, music and art to help children get ready for success in kindergarten. Each session includes a Mother Goose circle time, time to participate together in play based learning centers and a nutritious snack. Parents and caregivers are likely to discover new ways to support their children’s learning at home, and may make valuable connections with others attending the centre. To register for the StrongStart program, parents need to bring legal proof of identification for their children the first time they attend. For example, they could bring a birth certificate, permanent resident card, certificate of citizenship, documents issued by Immigration Canada, Aboriginal Status cards, passport/visa, or other vital statistics documents. Benefits to participating children and to the parents/ caregivers include: Children will develop physically, linguistically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. Parents and caregivers will: gain knowledge of activities they can try at home to further support their child’s learning; learn about a range of guidance strategies that support social and emotional development; receive information on other services in the community; acquire knowledge of healthy snacks they can continue to feed their child at home and/or pack for that child when he or she starts school; and make valuable connections with other parents or caregivers

Play & Learn Parenting/Literacy Program

An 8-week registered parenting program for parents with children aged 5 and under. Group discussions and activities for parents to learn tips and strategies on how to support their children’s literacy development. There is a facilitated play and activity component for the children. One to One Literacy Reading Program in the Elementary Schools

Families with children aged 0-5 are invited to the Early Learning Centre gym to enjoy play for parents and kids. Free family drop-in programs for preschool-aged children accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Baby Goose

A free program for parents with babies under 1 year old. Join us September - June for rhymes, songs and stories, guest speakers and baby topic discussions for you and your baby. Offered in partnership with CBAL-Kimberley and Kimberley Public Health Nursing. Child care is provided on site for older siblings by FRP program. Interior Health Child Health Clinics

Parents are welcome to drop in to the Kimberley Health Centre (Interior Health) to weigh their babies or discuss concerns with public health nurses weekdays from 8:30am-4:30pm. Bellies to Babies

A free program for women or families seeking information, resources, services, support or community referrals during pregnancy & the first six months of parenthood. A non-profit society assisting Northern BC and East Kootenay families with children in extraordinary medical need. Searching for support when your child is ill can be a daunting task. Friends of Children provides you with information on accommodation, transportation and other charities to ease the stress when your son or daughter must see doctors away from home. A long stay for medical treatment creates the challenge of finding affordable accommodation close to your child. Travel to and from your child’s medical appointment also poses questions of the most-cost efficient method to reach the medical destination. Offers swimmers ages 7 to adult an opportunity to develop swimming skills, endurance and team spirit in a fun, competitive atmosphere. Novice program for ages 6 and under. 4H Club

An organization for young people, ages 6 to 21. Our Motto is “Learn to do by Doing”. Have fun while learning and participating in Public Speaking, Demonstrations, Educational Displays and carrying out a project in a variety of areas, such as crafts, sewing, foods, beef, horse, sheep or a topic of interest to you. Beaver Scouts: Tuesdays 5:45pm - 7pm For Boys and Girls ages 5-7. Fun and friendship are the cornerstones of the Beaver Scout program. Through an adventurous program of outdoor activities, creative play, music, and cooperative games, Beaver Scouts enjoy time with their friends, learn how to get along within a group, and develop confidence to be themselves. Cub Scouts: Wednesday 6-8pm For Boys and Girls ages 8-10. Challenging hikes, weekend camps, and an introduction to water activities like canoeing and kayaking are just a few of the fun outdoor adventures that Cub Scouts enjoy. With the motto of “Do Your Best” front and center, Cub Scouts are encouraged to try new and challenging activities. Learning important first aid skills, paddling a canoe for the first time, or leading a game at camp will open the door for Cub Scouts to try other adventures they never thought possible. Scouts: Mondays 6-8pm For Boys and Girls ages 11-14. The focus of this age group is to develop personal growth through challenging outdoor camps based on minimal impact camping. Scouts learn to move through the land without leaving a trace. Scouts learn to take responsibility for themselves and the world around them. Through their motto of “Be Prepared” Scouts experience a variety of activities such as high ropes training, search and rescue skills, and community involvement. At this level Scouts are laying the groundwork to becoming leaders within their communities. Venturer Scouts: Mondays 6-8pm For Boys and Girls ages 15-17. The motto for Venturer Scouts is “Challenge”. Leadership skills and community service become ways that these young adults can give back the fun and adventure skills they have learned. Youth leadership and adventure are the cornerstone of Venturer Scout activities. Register on-line at Scouts Canada Website: www.Scouts.ca Programs run from Sept - June, every week with volunteer leaders at usually Resker Hall or Campstone, sometimes it will be on a different night to link up with other sections and/or on the weekends depending on the activity. Always looking for New Leaders - great way to spend time with your child and enjoy our outdoors together. Parents are expected to attend minimum of 2 council meetings and help out with sandbagging and selling popcorn fundraisers. Kids and Leaders MUST be registered in order to attend. Leaders will also need a course done through the scouts’ website - easy to do, an interview, criminal record check and references. Cost is approx. $190/yr. Plus uniform and badge book (approx. $45). Works out to less than $22/mth for a great kid’s activity and you can join anytime. 5 Kimberley Girl Guides Mountain View District

An organization for girls & young women from ages 5 & up (Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Rangers and Trex). This organization belongs to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) which is the world’s largest organization of girls and women. Guiding is an accepting environment with diverse and exciting programs and activities that offer the chance to discover new interests, learn valuable leadership skills and make lasting friendships. It provides opportunities for personal growth, mentoring and national/international travel as well as opportunities for post-secondary scholarships. We have a serious need for leaders. L.E.E.S Spark Youth Drop In & Learning Centre

Welcomes all youth between ages 8-18! Come have fun in a safe, friendly, supportive, drug & alcohol-free, supervised centre! Bands, events, youth workshops, cooking club, free internet access, foosball, Wii/Xbox fun and movie nights with fire burning, community dinners, music & bookstore: Everyone Welcome. We offer Youth Employment and Life Skills Programs and Summer Fun Day Trips. Bring a friend and we’ll see you at the centre! Kimberley Nordic Racers

This ski-racing program is for cross-country skiers aged 10 – 18 who like to have fun, train hard and race. Training for older team members starts in early May with dryland training activities like running, hiking, biking, roller skiing and strength training. As soon as there is a skiff of snow, we are on our skis until after the last races in late March. Team members compete in regional, provincial and national level competitions, including the Canadian National Championships. Kimberley Jackrabbit Program

This is a volunteer-run group that teaches children aged 4-14 to enjoy cross-country skiing. It starts with the youngest kids joining the Bunnyrabbit program, moving on to the Jackrabbit program, and then the older children join the Track Attack program. Each different level will challenge these children in different ways with the main focus on learning how to have fun on cross-country skis. Track Attack kids start with dryland-training sessions in September that focus on agility, speed, and strength. Track Attack kids also have a second training day on Tuesday evenings during the winter (6 – 7:30 pm). Skiing experience is not a requirement, only enthusiasm and a smile. Kimberley Minor Hockey Association

A non-profit recreational sport society. All players will be placed on their respective teams at playing levels to commensurate with each player’s age, playing skill and experience. Every effort will be made to ensure this is achieved as fairly as possible. Divisions within Minor Hockey are set by Hockey Canada -Player’s age is as of midnight, Dec. 31. North Star Skating Club Hockey Skills Powerskating Program

This is a high packed, high energy program that focuses on stroking improvement. Skills such as agility, balance, power, speed and endurance will be the focus. The Powerskate Program is coached by a Skate Canada Professional Coach. Water improves your oral health, promotes weight loss and energizes you. A study found that water increases sympathetic nervous system activity which is responsible for activating the body’s responses under stress, raising blood pressure, energy use and alertness.

North Star Skating Club Star Skate Program

Figure skaters enter competitions and/or take Skate Canada tests as they advance in their skills. Skating Skills, Free Skate, Ice Dance and Stroking Sessions are provided. Ice time is provided and skaters must book private lessons with our accomplished professional Skate Canada coach Tamara Bannatyne. The year ends with an ice show. Kimberley Mountain Bike Skills Park and Skate Park

Located at the corner of Rotary Drive and Marsden Street, these parks are connected by beautiful creekside trails and provide both skaters and cyclists with the opportunity to carve and flow through bowls and launch jumps. This area also is a great picnic destination. Bring your body armour to participate or take in the action from the sidelines and enjoy the fun and sun. Helmets are required to ride in this park. Kimberley Gymnastics & Gyminy Crickets

We have recreational, developmental, competitive, trampoline and special needs programs for all ages. Birthday Parties, private lessons and gym rentals are planned and supervised by a certified coach. We offer our Gyminy Crickets early learning program for 3 to 5 year olds, planned and coached by well trained and certified staff, which runs Monday to Friday 9am – 12 noon, September to June. KEYSA is the parent organization for youth soccer in the region. We work closely with the Cranbrook and Kimberley soccer associations and are responsible for the select (rep) and development teams. Seniors Helping Seniors

MONDAYS:

This program establishes a supportive connection between a volunteer and a senior in need. It fosters a healthy social and supportive relationship allowing older persons to help other older and more vulnerable seniors engage in their community. The program coordinator recruits volunteers who are then matched up with a senior participant. The volunteers provide the seniors with many valuable services such as: transportation, a walking partner, social opportunities, someone to do light repairs, relief from care giving responsibilities, and peer support. Volunteers that are seniors themselves who continue to utilize their life long skills, by providing support to more disadvantaged and vulnerable seniors. Active Aging

Designed to support older adults to lead independent, active and healthy lives. Through community partnerships the program will provide opportunities for seniors to fully participate in physical, social and community life programs in Kimberley. The program helps facilitate and educate seniors on a variety of topics; affordable and accessible transportation in order to assist access to leisure and recreation opportunities, orientation to local recreation programs, inter-generational programs, information sharing among service providers, and outreach opportunities for those with physical limitations. Kimberley Nordic Club

Located at 480 North Star Drive, the club maintains 35km of snowcat groomed and track set trails (for skate and classic technique skiing) as well as 5km of single track for those preferring a more back-to-nature experience. A new 1200 sq ft lodge is open daily for relaxation during skiing or for après-ski activities with complimentary hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Skiing typically starts in November and lasts until April, thanks to extensive summer grooming as well as regular winter grooming with a Bombardier BR 275 and Ginzu groomer. There is also a 3.5km trail that is lit every night during the ski season from dusk until 10pm. Special events this coming season will include a “Lantern Ski” on New Year’s Eve, a Gourmet Ski Event, and Kootenay Cup Ski Races for competitors of all ages and talents. Volunteers for these events are Club members and locals and any help is always appreciated. Free monthly guided events throughout the year to introduce people to the Park and its trail network. Hikes range from 2 to 5 hours in length with varying amounts of elevation gain and are a great way to get some fresh air and exercise, meet some interesting people and get to know the Nature Park. The Nature Park also organizes work parties from time to time to clear and maintain trails, remove noxious weeds and carry out ecosystem restoration activities. Hikes and walks run from May through November and snowshoeing or skiing outings are hosted from December to February.
