Hazelemere Farm GROWING SPECIALTY FOODS SINCE 2000

Hazelmere Farm was started by Lijen and Sherlene Hua in 2000. It’s a family farm, and their daughter Michelle, who was involved in her late teens, recently moved back from Taiwan with her husband Chenyu. “I love to grow food and to feel the abundance. I can’t think of doing otherwise - you know, buying food, eating out.”

For Michelle, growing her own food is the right thing to do.

Hazelmere produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. But the farm is perhaps best known for specialty items. These include wasabi (root and plants), fruits like figs, white peaches, persimmons, melons, as well as Asian vegetables. Many of these are greenhouse grown, and are a passion of Michelle’s father. “It’s an extended hobby of my dad, to grow these more exotic fruits and vegetables.”

As well as growing food, Hazelmere produces wontons.

The ingredients are all local, with pork from Tannadice Farm, vegetables from the farm. Wontons are a “top seller” at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market.

Where to buy Hazelmere Farm produce?

Hazelmere got its start at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market, and it remains the Farm’s primary outlet, generating most of their sales. However, the Farm welcomes visitors (please call), and many regulars stop by for eggs

Pasta with Fresh Tomato Sauce

INGREDIENTS: traditional fresh egg pasta - Prontissima Pasta ripe tomatoes – most veggie vendors’ finely chopped fresh basil – veggie farmers’ finely chopped fresh oregano – veggie farmers’ garlic, minced; sautéed in 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil extra-virgin olive oil sea salt - Clever Crow Spices & Sea Salt

PREPARATION: Peel tomatoes, halve crosswise, remove and discard seeds. Cut tomatoes into 1/4-inch dice and transfer to a serving bowl. Add basil, oregano and sautéed garlic to the tomato mixture.

Cook fresh pasta according to package directions.

What’s on the horizon: Pork, honey – and grains?

This year Hazelmere has started raising a small number of pigs. These will be ready for the fall, and the Hua’s are inviting orders for special cuts, including halves. The farm has also started producing wild flower honey at the farm and fireweed honey, from hives on Mt. Washington.

Because current production uses only a fraction of their land base, Hazelmere Farm is also interested in collaborating with other farmers. They’re focusing their business on what they do well: primarily vegetables and fruits. Buying local food and supporting local farmers is one of the best and most direct ways to grow our Comox Valley economy.

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until hot (but not smoking). Pour over the tomato mixture, add salt and mix well. Toss with cooked pasta. Top with freshly grated Natural Pastures Parmadmer cheese. Serve and enjoy!
