SURREY — If you’re going to compare Sisters Thrift Boutique to other secondhand shops, it shouldn’t be with the likes of Value Village.

Think consignment-level attire with thrift-store pricing.

They even showcase their selection online and have created an app so customers can browse high-end products.

A Guess purse for less than $20. Le Chateau dresses for the same. A Lululemon hoodie for $18.99. These are just a sampling of items currently posted through their app.

Throw in the fact that it helps keep afloat a Surrey charity working to help Surrey’s homeless and you’ve got something pretty unique.

The social enterprise, a division of NightShift Street Ministries, made the move from Whalley to Guildford over the August long weekend to free up much-needed space in the ministry’s King George Boulevard headquarters. In that space, the organization is now expanding its counselling services, office space and is creating a daytime training area.

The thrift store operation first came to be eight years ago after NightShift became overwhelmed with donations, a lot of which was business attire and high-end labels.

Not wanting to give expensive, brandname clothing to their “street friends” out of concern they would sell them for drugs, the thrift store sprung to life.

But the first iteration was a “down and dirty” second-hand shop, said manager Angie Paulson.

When they moved into the King George Boulevard location the higher-end concept was born.

“We just wanted to be something different. Really we felt that thrift stores don’t need to be holes in the wall and smelly,” she said. “I thought I could take a smaller space and generate the same amount of revenue. So instead of selling ten of those

And the concept works, resulting in the recent move to Guildford.

Donations fill the store, but if she’s running low on stock, she’ll hit up consignment stores.

She has several local shops that donate items they can’t sell.

And this September, Paulson plans to open a “VIP room” in the back of the Guildford store for their particularly highend products.

Essentially, it would be a store within a store, complete with a personal shopper.

It’s something she’s dreamed of, but didn’t have space for back in Whalley.

For Paulson, the move to Guildford is bittersweet.

“I had a lot more interactions with the street folk (in the Whalley location),” she explained. “I worked with a lot of the girls. I hope they’ll come up here. Most of them have bikes – how they get them I don’t know, but they have wheels. So I’ve told them where I am and to come see me if they’re in need. So that’s hard. You get

attached to a lot of the people down there.”

But the new Guildford location is ideal to grow her vision, she continued.

“I’ve always had a desire to be somewhere where people are destination shopping and I can go into competition with the malls and the actual retail stores,” she said.

“Come and buy that $200 dress here for $20.”

And so far so good.

High foot traffic and high-density housing means a lot more exposure for the store in their new locale.

“I think it’s only going to get better for us,” she said. “As Sisters strengthens, so too does NightShift because we’re just feeding more money to them to operate and grow their programs. In a perfect world, NightShift would not need donations our social enterprises one day will be able to float us. And that’s the goal. It’s a long way away, but you’ve got to start somewhere.”

20 YEARS AGO, AUG. 13, 1995, IN THE PAGES OF THE NOW: ❚ Surrey’s garbage collectors staged a blockade at the Port Mann landfill that cost the city up to $20,000 in revenue from garbage collection.

Striking employees from Laidlaw Waste Systems used their bodies to prevent nine company trucks from accessing the landfill to dump the city’s residential garbage. “They hit our legs, they bumped right into us,” said picketer Rob Johnson. “When the first truck realized he’d have to roll over us, they backed off.” ❚ Five people – four of them children – were injured when a young woman smashed her car through the front window of a Scott Road bakery.

The out-of-control vehicle pinned two of the children against a wall.

Civic Treasures named SURREY — Winners of Surrey’s 2015 Civic Treasures award have been announced.

This year’s awardees are artists Cora and Don Li-Leger, journalist Alex Browne and historian/entertainer Roger Bose.

The four will be feted at a Business and the Arts event in Surrey this fall.

Surrey’s Civic Treasures award, established in 2008, honours individuals “who have achieved excellence in the production of the arts and/or made significant contributions to the development of arts and heritage in the City of Surrey and beyond.”

Connors opens her studio on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, at #3-8778 159th St. – with wine and coffee served as refreshments, naturally.

Coffee and wine are fine beverages to sip, but they’re used for creative purposes in the hands of one Surrey artist. Suhaila (Sue) Connors blends realism with abstract expressionism at her Fleetwood-area studio, to host a solo exhibit this weekend (Aug. 15-16).

“I paint with acrylic paint, coffee and wine on canvas and wooden wine boxes,” Connors told the Now. “Several new pieces have been created for this exhibit, (and) there will be a draw to win one of my unique coffee paintings.”

Columnist celebrates Cake and entertainers will help celebrate DanceCraft’s fifth anniversary at the Newton Crossing shopping mall. NEWTON — The Newton rec centre is about to undergo a $5 million expansion.

The fitness space will be doubled through the addition of an extra fitness room and an expansion of the mat room, making plenty of room for wrestling and yoga groups.

The fitness space will total 8,000 square feet when finished.

“Our fitness rooms are jam packed. There’s definitely a community need and want,” said Perry Fulop, community and recreation services manager for Newton.

Exterior renovations are also planned.

Construction is expected be begin in October or November, and Fulop said the work should be completed by the fall of 2016.

EWTON — Doug Zaklan takes a drink of water on a hot Wednesday afternoon and surveys the land he’s been farming for the past four years. It’s harvest day at Zaklan Heritage Farm, and dozens of hens scramble around a penned area, not far from where Reverend the llama chews on lettuce grown in another area of the field. Carrots, beats, chard, kale, cabbage, garlic, onions, broccoli, tomatoes – it’s all yielded from the approximately two acres of soil on this tree-lined property, owned by the Zaklan family since the 1920s.

“Some people have no idea this is here,” Zaklan said as he walked near the hen house, part of an eight-acre oasis of agricultural goodness located off 84th Avenue and 132nd Street in Newton.

“When they come here, people are usually amazed that this farm is here – that’s the most common reaction. People tell us, ‘I’ve lived here my whole life and I had no idea this existed.’”

Over the decades, the land has been farmed in different ways, but the current use is probably the most ambitious. Zaklan, whose uncle George and aunt Evelyn continue to live on the property, began a revitalization project in 2011 that eventually involved a partnership with Gemma McNeill, a fellow former UBC Farm worker who shares Zaklan’s passion for organic farming.

Today, McNeill and Zaklan live on the farm that keeps them busy during the growing season.

They sell their produce on the farm every Saturday, and they also bring goods to markets held elsewhere in the area, including Surrey Urban Farmers’ Market on Wednesday afternoons.

“Right now,” McNeill observed, “there seems to be more people aware of, and interest in and need for, having healthy local food, so I think we’re kind of doing the right thing at the right time. We’re coming in at that sort of sweet spot. We’re working hard, because farming’s not easy, but there’s more of a demand now that previously didn’t exist.”

Zaklan nodded in agreement.

“We’re really trying to find out what the best way to farm this land is, and it’s about kind of reinventing that and reassessing what works for the land and also what works for the market, and using technologies that didn’t exist back in the day.”

Now surrounded by industry, the land looked much different 90 years ago when Dragan and Marta Zaklan first moved there to begin farming. Dynamite was

(Photo: TOM ZILLICH) used to clear massive tree stumps from the then-isolated piece of property, which was soon occupied by a single cow, vegetables, strawberries, chickens and geese. During the Great Depression, the couple’s former “stump farm” sometimes served as a weekend-getaway spot for friends of theirs who continued to live in the city.

“I think it’s an incredible feat for the family to have held on to this piece of property and maintained it for agricultural use for so long, for four generations,” McNeill said. “It’s really amazing now to have it accessible to the public and share it with people in our community – and also create a community. In Surrey, I think it’s easy for (people) to feel separated and not connected to anything. In some ways, that’s mainly what we’re trying to do, connect people.”

Up to 40 kinds of vegetables are grown on the Zaklan farm, including more than a hundred varieties of things – nine varieties of tomatoes in the hot house, for example, and five or six different types of cucumbers.

“That variety keeps things interesting for us and also for our CSA members,” Zaklan added. “So every week, their box is changing – something different in them, with the season. The inaugural event – long sold out – is the brainchild of the establishment’s executive chef, Ryan Praskey, in partnership with Deltabased Four Winds Brewery.

“We are wanting to up the ante with our food here, and we wanted to do a farm-totable event, and that farm is the perfect spot for it,” Praskey told the Now. “Me and Michael, the GM here, started going to farmers’ markets in the area, so we grabbed some business cards and theirs was one of them,” Praskey recalled. “The farm was so close to our (pub), it was amazing – just eight blocks away. We took a drive there to see what it was about and it’s crazy, this farm in the middle of, like, a little industrial area. It’s a beautiful farm where they’re doing some awesome stuff.”

Once or twice a week, Praskey buys baskets of produce from the farm for use at the pub, creating a strong community connection.

“It’s fun for us to grow produce and have people get so excited about it, like Ryan from the One 20,” McNeill enthused. “Like, he tastes the carrots and is amazed by how great they taste straight out of the soil, and he gets super excited, you know? And he’s a professional, so it’s really exciting to share that enthusiasm for it. And then he makes something amazing for us (to eat). It’s that sharing that is exciting.”

he farm has also hosted canning workshops this summer, and the fourth annual Zaklan Heritage Farm Harvest Festival is set to happen on Saturday, Aug. 22, starting at 5 p.m. The event is billed as a “fabulous night of community networking, eating and dancing;” guests are encouraged to bring a potluck dish to share with everyone and tour the farm.

For Zaklan and McNeill, such events can be useful to introduce people to the farm and also recruit volunteers – people like the “Chicken Friends” who collect, wash and package eggs (email gemma@zaklanheritagefarm.com to get involved). Volunteers are welcomed during harvest times, too.

“We’re a small business without much of a budget, so I started doing the markets four years ago while still learning how to grow,” Zaklan recalled. “I was putting a lot of work into growing a few vegetables, so I set up the market thinking everybody was going to come buy these delicious vegetables – but nobody came, you know. And now, every market is just a little bit better than the one before it, so it’s this kind of constant growth.”

Like anything, growth takes time.

“They say it takes three to five years to get a business off the ground, so we’re kind of hitting that mark right now,” McNeill said.

Government lawns drinking while water supply shrinking

I

t’s clearly a case of do as I say, not do as I do.

Our water situation – lack of it – is dire, we’re told. So on July 20, Metro Vancouver ordered Stage 3 water restrictions.

We need to conserve our water, they say, for drinking, health and safety, and fire protection...

And oh yeah, for also making sure local schoolyard lawns are verdant when school is not in session.

While private citizens face thumping fines for breaking the water restriction rules, Stage 3 water restriction guidelines permit school

yard watering “at minimum levels as required to maintain areas in usable condition.”

So government lawns are drinking while our water supply is shrinking.

This has raised more than one eyebrow. In Fraser Heights, residents are fighting to save a beloved Koi fish that may well be gasping for air in a dried up pond as you read this.

Meanwhile, schoolyard lawns are kept verdant green. Not yours, of course. That’s brown.

Perhaps the finers should fine themselves.

o Stephen Harper wants to build his own Berlin Wall around Canada, figuratively speaking. He’s running for re-election in 2015 but seems to thinks it’s 1984.

When I was a teenager, back during the Cold War, I was always thankful that we Canadians could travel anywhere we darn well pleased, unlike the people living in the Soviet Union and other Marxist-Leninist countries on the other side of that miserable wall.

It was one of the good things that distinguished us from the evil empire.

Liberty of movement, that is.

Mobility rights were enshrined in our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Section 6 (1) in 1982 and before then, in Section 91 of the Constitution Act of 1867.

Can’t get much more Canadian than that.

So when I turned my television on this past weekend, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

The current prime minister was saying his government, if re-elected in October, would ban Canadians – on pain of criminal charges, yet – from travelling to countries the federal government deems to be terrorist states.

First off, I get that the Conservatives want a tool to deal with those Canadians who would travel abroad to join up with terrorist groups who intend to wreak harm on other Canadians.

I get it.

But is the answer to put an entire nation on lockdown?

They are opening a Pandora’s box here. Of course there are a lot of ifs at play. First, the Conservatives would have to be re-elected and then carry through on their promise to ban certain travel zones. Then it would have to survive inevitable court challenges and one likes to think the Supreme Court would smite down this nonsense the first chance it got.

But let’s say it did become law.

Which countries would be on the no-go list in five years’ time? In 10?

Eastasia? Eurasia? Airstrip One? Are we living in a country whose citizens own their government or a country where the government owns its citizens?

Seventeen years ago, I married my wife in her country. The immigration process was under way; we did all we were legally supposed to do, like good people.

I remember queuing up at the Citizenship and Immigration office in Vancouver. The woman in line before me – from Vietnam, I think – had just been reduced to tears by this clown on the government side of the window.

When it was my turn, this same clerk told me that my wife-to-be and I had to get married in Canada, not abroad. Of course, she was wrong. I told her no government is going to tell me where I can get married and then politely suggested she pull her head out from the dark hole in which it was ensconced.

This clerk was but a small cog in a very large machine. She was not a prime minister.

In this country, we don’t operate under the Napoleonic Code. Rather, we operate on the premise that until a judge or jury of one’s peers finds an accused person guilty of a criminal

offence, the accused is deemed to be not guilty.

Criminalizing someone for merely travelling to a place the government of the day declares to be bad assumes the traveller is up to no good when in fact they might well not be.

It’s been said Harper and his Conservative Party have a considerable support base in evangelical Christians.

Ironically, many of these Christians revere as heroes missionaries who have smuggled Bibles into dangerous countries at great personal risk – you know, into the kind of countries that Harper wants to now ban Canadians from visiting.

Is Harper and his party, if re-elected, prepared to criminalize Christian missionaries who would venture into no-go zones to preach the gospel?

Hmmm?

This banning of foreign travel should not only be brought back to the drawing table, the table should be broken up for kindling.

So let it be done...

The Editor, As I was walking along Crescent Road Saturday afternoon, I noticed that drivers were slowing down as they emerged from a 50KM zone into a 30KM zone, and then I saw the reason: a radar trap. It was the first time since the last radar setup (a weeknight) that I had seen drivers braking when they approached the lower speed limit zone. The cause of their braking was seeing the speed trap, not a desire to stay within the speed limit and reduce the risk of injuring or killing someone. The police officers had pulled over several vehicles and were writing up speeding tickets.

My sincere thanks go to the Surrey RCMP for working hard to make our streets safer for everyone – dogs, cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.

They screamed for help; myself and a few others were on the dock, too far to get there and none of us could swim. We felt helpless. One man in a blue T-shirt came running down the embankment, dove in, swam over to them and helped them ashore. You men in the boat don’t know that you almost took five young, beautiful lives from this planet and their families. I hope this finds you somehow, so you know what you did, and so that it will never happen to anyone else.

FRASER HEIGHTS — The fate of a beloved Koi fish named Goldie is up in the air after the pond at Glenwood Park in Fraser Heights began to dry up due to the recent extreme heat.

Residents say the fish’s belly is dragging on the ground.

“So many people have so much history with this pond,” said resident Sara Pickering.

“We just want the fish to be safe.

We want them to have enough water to make it through the summer.”

Because the pond is classified as ornamental, the city says it’s unable to fill it under the water restrictions that came into effect in early July.

Adding to the problem is that the pond may not have been at full capacity when the restrictions kicked in, explained Neal Aven, manager of Surrey’s urban forestry and

environmental programs.

“In mid-June it came to parks’ attention that something was wrong with the valve that monitors the city water going into that pond, and so city crews had to do some repairs on the valve, which means you have to shut it off. Those repairs were completed about two days prior to Stage 2 water restrictions. So the water was on and flowing back in and on for two days.

“It probably didn’t fill it back up to levels that they are accustomed to.”

According to residents, the fish was put there illegally 20 or so years ago and has become an attraction in the community.

“We’re just struggling because we don’t want to lose Goldie,” said resident Joy Parsons.

She said she can’t understand why the city still has water parks going, but can’t fill the pond.

“I’m sure the kids would give up the water for a couple days to fill up the pond. They all love that

fish,” she told the Now. There were actually two Koi fish in the pond until Urban Safari Rescue Society was called by a resident. The organization’s boss, Gary Oliver, came out early this week and took the other Koi – Blackie – back to his South Surrey facility.

When he returned to get Goldie, he said residents were out in “full force” and didn’t want him to take the second fish because under law, he can’t put the fish back, he explained.

“I’m not here to upset the neighbourhood or take the beloved

Koi away… I’m here because I was asked to be here.”

So he left the Koi at the residents’ request, he said.

“The water is really shallow,” Oliver continued. “It’s only a couple of feet deep, so he could get stuck in the mud and not get away if raccoons or coyotes come by.

“He’s at risk there, no doubt about it.”

Pickering said a biologist and an official with a pond company told residents leaving the fish would probably be better than moving it – due to the stress a move could

cause – and trucking water in would be the best option.

As it stands, the fate of Goldie is in the hands of residents, and they’re not sure what they’re going to do yet.

It could cost thousands of dollars to truck water in, Pickering said.

Residents are circulating a petition urging the city to fill the pond. It asks the city to “act swiftly.” The petition reads: “Let us also remind the City of Surrey that the ‘motto’ is City of Parks. Let’s keep it that way!”

Said Pickering: “If the city doesn’t take responsibility… we’re kind of appealing to the public for water. We need water.

“One of our last options would be to create a GoFundMe campaign.”

Meanwhile, Aven urges residents not to illegally introduce animals into city ponds.

any couples tie the knot outdoors, as nature can provide an idyllic backdrop on such a special day. In many ways, planning outdoor weddings is similar to planning weddings that take place with a roof

overhead and four walls surrounding couples and their guests.

But there are some distinct features of both indoor and outdoor weddings, and couples planning the latter would be wise to consider the following factors before they commit to a location for their ceremony.

LAWS Laws dictate what can and cannot be done in open spaces, and couples with outdoor locations in mind should confirm local laws and regulations before they commit to a location for their wedding. Research which permits you might need and if there are any rules or restrictions at each location you are considering. The cost of such permits may be negligible, but the

rules may restrict what you can do in a given space and how long you can do it. Discuss these rules with each other to determine if the rules are something both of you can live with.

LOCATION Proximity to your reception venue and the hotel where guests are staying is another factor to consider if you are planning on hosting

an outdoor wedding.

A remote location might provide stunning views and privacy, but guests might tire if the ceremony location is far from the hotel and/or reception venue. This should not be too big an issue if the ceremony and reception are held at the same locale, but couples should still look for nearby lodging before booking remote outdoor locations.

WEATHER Weather is perhaps the biggest factor couples must consider when planning an outdoor wedding.

Outdoor weddings are best held during those seasons when the threat of precipitation is insignificant and temperatures are mild, but it’s still necessary to have a backup plan just in

No secret that I have been involved with the Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society for many, many years. This family-oriented

theatre club has a tradition of involving families in their productions. I have most of my close friends through association with this group. Occasionally they let me be on stage. This proves that anyone can do – you just have to be willing to work hard, take direction and learn as you go along.

Working together as a team – family or not – is a huge positive contribution to an individual’s life skills and presents to the community at large some pretty darn good live-theatre experiences without the huge cost of professional theatre. Affordable.

The director of the Rugged Maniac series in Canada is Dave Cannon, a South Surrey resident who, with his son, participated in the event in Portland a couple years ago before he got involved as a partner.

“We loved how well it was organized and how much fun it was,” Cannon said of his adventure in Oregon.

“It’s more of an introductory style of race,” he continued. “Some of the other races out there are kind of intimidating for some people,
