Rats infest downtown

A house at the end of a residential street in Pitt Meadows was under construction last week. The housing market in Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and the rest of Metro Vancouver continues to sizzle this summer.

The City is working on a plan to deal with the rising population of rodents.

An uptick in the population of rodents in the downtown core has business owners in Maple Ridge saying “rats!”

A number of factors could be to blame for the increase in the rat population, said Frank Quinn with the City of Maple Ridge.

Certainly the heat has caused the population to increase, as shelter from the elements becomes less of an issue.

As well, the increase in construction, especially around Haney Place Frank Quinn Mall, might be to blame, said Ineke Boekhorst Public Works & with the Maple Ridge Development Downtown Business Improvement Association.

Additionally, new food disposal regulations no longer permit organics to be disposed of with other garbage, which might have led to improper storing of food waste, which would then further boost the rat population.

Whatever is to blame, City staff and local businesses are working together to find a solution to the rodent problem, said Boekhorst.

The City has reached out to Fraser Health, as well as private pest control agencies, to come up with potential ways to address to the problem.

Buyers snapping up houses

Like the rest of Metro Vancouver, the housing market is heating up in town.

The summer housing market in Metro Vancouver – which includes Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows – mirrors the weather.

It’s sizzling.

In July, momentum spilled over from the highest selling June, and the second highest overall monthly total, on record for the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV).

“Demand in our detached home market continues to drive activity across Metro Vancouver,” said Darcy McLeod, a Maple Ridge-based realtor who is also the REBGV president. “There were more detached home sales in the region [in June] than

we’ve seen during the month of June in more than 10 years.”

Meanwhile, sales in July were 33.5 per cent above the 10-year sales average for the month.

Combining the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows markets, a total of 159 detached houses were snapped up in July, third most among regions under the REBGV umbrella. Only Richmond (218) and Coquitlam (198) saw more detached homes sold last month.

As well, 74 attached homes (rowhomes and townhouses) and 43 apartments were sold in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in July.

Prices in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are inching up with the demand, even though Maple Ridge has the second-most affordable market in the REBGV next to the Sunshine Coast, which includes communities such as Gibsons and Sechelt.

In Pitt Meadows, a detached home would have set a buyer back an average of $565,400 last month, up 9.6 per cent from last July.

The benchmark price for townhouses in Maple Ridge in July was $292,100, making it 9.6 per cent more expensive than July 2014.

Pitt Meadows townhomes, at $361,700 on average this past month, are 11 per cent more expensive than they were a year ago.

The apartment market in Maple Ridge is still relatively stable, with condos costing $169,100 on average last month, down 0.8 per cent from the previous July.

Condos in Pitt Meadows cost on average $249,600 in July, up 1.2 per cent in price from July 2014.

8 of Hearts impress on Yukon Quest

Campaign is taking shape Two candidates are confirmed for the new Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding, with two more being finalized in the next few weeks.

While the leaders of the four major federal parties ADA squared off in the first CANTES debate of the extra long VO campaign season at the start of August, the local race is beginning to take shape as two more candidates for the riding of Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge should be finalized by the end of next week.

Meanwhile, voters in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge will have more control over their representative in Parliament, as the new federal riding leaves behind the municipality of Mission, which was previously included in the riding.

In addition to the Cities of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, the riding includes Katzie, Langley, and Whonnock reserves, with around 94,000 people within the boundaries.

2015

The race in the Yukon was exhausting, challenging, but ultimately rewarding for an all-women’s crew based out of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

The 8 of Hearts crew had a great time paddling through Five Finger Rapids, hitting a couple of big waves.

he 8 of Hearts showed plenty of heart during the Yukon Quest, a three-day, 715 kilometre (444 mile) wilderness endurance paddling race held in the Yukon recently.

The all-women’s crew that took part in the world’s longest annual canoe and kayak race included Pitt Meadows residents Katie Stein Sather (the team captain and organizer), Debra Eisel, Betty McLeod, and Carol Woodworth, along with Isabelle Hamm and Ruth Ross from Maple Ridge and Whitehorse natives Deb Bartlette and 68-year-old Ingrid Wilcox, a quest veteran with nearly a decade-and-a-half of experience navigating those northern waters.

In a race from Whitehorse to Dawson, Yukon Territory where, thanks to the midnight sun, it never really got dark, the local crew finished in 52 hours, 47 minutes, and 35 seconds.

In the process, they placed second in their category (women’s voyageur canoe), fifth among 10 voyageur entries including mixed and men’s, and 14th

overall out of the 57 boats entered.

Ross credited two of the veterans on the boat, Sather and Wilcox, for their leadership during and leading up to the race.

“None of this would have been possible without Katie’s dogged determination, that we would train to be physically and mentally ready and have the right gear in place,” Ross said.

“We were envied for the good fortune of having the legendary Ingrid Wilcox from Whitehorse on our team, who is in her 14th year of this competition and knows the Yukon River inside and out, all the fast channels, [and] ones to avoid. Without Ingrid, and Katie’s wonderful steering and our determination as a team, we would never have made such good time.”

Sather said this was a completely different experience from last year’s Quest

because this time around, she was in the company of good friends.

“This year was so much more fun,” she said.

Conditions improved from last year.

In 2014, wind on Lake La Barge made paddling a challenge.

“This year there was just a breeze so it was very nice paddling,” Sather said.

Even with the favourable conditions, the race was a test of attrition, especially considering the 8 of Hearts crew is made up of paddlers ranging in age from 51 to 71.

Other than a mandatory seven-hour layover at Carmacks (26 hours into the race), and three hours at Kirkman Creek (44 hours into the race), teams paddled non-stop to reach the “City of Gold.” > More at www.mrtimes.com, search ‘Hearts’

While a “rally for safety” went off without confrontation on Saturday, a disturbing series of events unfolded later Saturday night near the homeless camp on Cliff Avenue, and the situation is now under investigation by the local RCMP. Gasoline was reportedly dumped on the ground near the camp on Cliff Avenue, and

RCMP are busy looking into who might be responsible.

Earlier in the day, a peaceful rally for community safety was the cause of increased RCMP presence around Cliff Avenue.

Organizers of the rally stressed that the rally was intended to be peaceful, despite the event having been labelled “vigilantes,” prior to it taking place, said Karen Leo. Jenn Watts, another organ-

izer, emphasized that Cliff Avenue was only one of a number of factors which led to the rally.

“We’re not anti-homeless,” said Watts.

Armed with signs that read: “Drug testing b4 (sic) welfare” and “Needles don’t belong in parks, kids do”, the group made their way from Memorial Peace Park to the Haney Bypass near to Cliff Avenue.

Time for climate debate

im Campbell was infamously quoted (or misquoted) as saying that a 47-day election was no time to discuss serious issues.

Fortunately, we are in the early days of an election campaign that is almost twice that long, and will stretch on into late October.

It’s also unusual to have an election campaign during the height of summer, when the weather is often top of mind.

So let’s have a debate about global warming.

Not whether or not it exists, which has been thoroughly established.

There is a worldwide scientific consensus, and every major political party accepts that it is happening, whether grudgingly or not. There is also ample anecdotal evidence in the form of temperature records that have fallen by the score across B.C. We also have the raging wildfires and water restrictions to show us what global warming will mean for us on a local level.

We need to determine what the best course of action is towards change.

There are dozens of options, including changing the way we generate power, increasing energy efficiency, tax incentives, more spending on public transit, and changes in urban planning.

Depending on how we choose to proceed, we could find ourselves in a future with electric cars springing up everywhere, as in Norway, and with solar farms popping up across the Prairies, or we could pioneer a new generation of safe, efficient nuclear power projects, or we could simply hunker down and concentrate on using less energy and using what we do create more efficiently.

Any of those options are better than our current course, which is barely better than nothing. Our major opposition parties may be willing to attack the government on the environment, but they are still following rather than leading the debates on energy and climate change.

As usual, it’s up to Canadians to push for the changes we need in Ottawa.

Debate this: Better ways for party leaders to compete

Painful Truth

ast week’s debate was… ugh.

I mean, it was fine, as far as these things go. None of the four federal party leaders spontaneously combusted, no one started barfing pea soup and rotating their head 360 degrees, the ground did not open up to swallow them, and Gilles Duceppe wasn’t there.

But other than that, it was pretty dull. Yeah, we can talk about the ratio of actual policy to argument, and the degree to which they were charismatic, stiff, entertaining, annoyingly off topic, and/or evasive.

I don’t want to base my MATTHEW vote on this kind of format. Frankly, where are the debates for someone like me, who is actually going to read party platforms and decide based on those? I don’t need to see people have a genteel bickerfest for two hours!

So here are some debate formats I’d rather see, which will be more fun for

Candidates must select their favourite episode of Star Trek and defend their choice using well-researched arguments, including defending their choice of Kirk vs Picard vs Sisko vs Janeway.

• The Economy.

All four candidates are given the amount of money the average single mother with two children has to spend per month, and must work out a budget that includes food, daycare, transportation, rent, and utilities, without going into crippling debt.

Part two involves doing the actual grocery shopping while minding two sticky, tired children.

• Foreign Affairs: With nothing but a compass, a Swiss army knife, and a chicken salad sandwich, each candidate is dropped at a random location somewhere on the planet, and must return to Canada without starting a diplomatic incident.

Bonus points for anyone who learns some of the local language along the way.

Candidates who do not return will not move on to the next round.

• Democratic Reform: All candidates (literally all of them, from all 338 ridings across the country, and all major and minor parties) are stranded on a desert island for three weeks and must create a new democratic society.

The ad revenue from Survivor: Parliamentary Reform Edition will be used

to fund public campaigns for increased voter turnout.

• Corruption, sponsored by Just For Laughs.

A hidden camera crew will drop a wallet with $1,000 cash and no ID in front of each candidate while they are alone and believe themselves to be unobserved.

Then we get to see what happens. That’s it.

• Non-Partisan Cooperation.

The four main party leaders must build a spaghetti bridge that can support 10 kilos of weight. They must work together, and must agree on the design and division of labour necessary to complete the bridge.

If the bridge collapses, we get new leaders.

• Voter Appeal: Pie fight.

Exactly what it sounds like. No lemon meringue or key lime allowed, as those can sting the eyes. There will be 500 pies, some tables to duck behind, and a halfhour time limit. The only winner will be the viewers.

TIMES columnist correct about corporations Dear Editor,

I wondered why the TIMES would print this tangent column defending the honour of corporations until I got to the end and saw who wrote it [Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and some excus-

A corporation does not “have to care” and it’s demonstrated every day.

At best, they may choose to care to serve their interests.

The responsibility is

to the shareholders, not to society.

A shareholder expects the corporation to do everything within the law to increase said wealth.

I think that tied in with columnist Bob Groeneveld stating,

It was at that time that I took note of the tattered Canadian flag flying proudly.

Or, perhaps not proudly.

I found it disrespectful to Canada to see such a ripped and tattered flag flying.

It is time Pitt Meadows purchased a new flag, or perhaps visited the MLA’s or MP’s offices to get a replacement.

I don’t think this is something we would see in our neighbouring country, and I don’t think it is something we should see in our country.

Let’s show Canada the respect it truly deserves.

A letter writer expressed concern with a tattered flag at Harris Road Park, but by Wednesday the old flag appeared to have been replaced with this new one.

All those things you mentioned are side effects of increasing wealth for the shareholders who may sometimes be society (e.g. charities).

I think Bob was entirely correct to refer to corporations as inanimate objects because they are and are only treated as persons by law to assign rights and protections in our capitalist society (i.e. they are persons on paper). There was just no better solutions they could come up with. I don’t think this problem exists in communist states.

Anyways, I think Bob is right in what he said.

Case in point, corporations sell the cigarettes to begin with.

Helping addicts does more harm than good Dear Editor, Its hard to believe that we let the bleeding hearts tell us we need to feel sorry for homeless people.

There’s at least 100,000 people in Maple Ridge, and about 100

homeless people causing nothing but problems.

The mayor and any other bleeding hearts needs to learn that helping these people addicted people harms them more then helps them.

Ironically, their homeless camp is one block from a treatment centre.

They should be given a choice, treatment or a bus ticket to Vancouver.

Dear Editor, A 78-day election campaign is far too much.

Five weeks is more than enough before perhaps most folks will be bored to death.

For weeks [politicians] have been bribing us with our money.

Do things as and when they need to be done, be it a new bridge or improvements to the highway.

To make it seem as if it’s a gift is nonsense.

Offensive, eh!

Currently making the rounds is an email showing the hind end of a bull and a sign saying lift lever “to hear what he’s saying.”

To be inundated with what the bovine is saying is just too much.

Berries failing Dear Anne: In 2010 we planted a row of raspberry plants in good soil along the south wall of the house.

We put manure on each spring and we have a sprinkler system (except not right now). But we don’t have raspberries. There aren’t many blossoms and although there are bees around only a very few and mostly very small berries.

When we had other raspberries elsewhere we had no problem.

I’d appreciate any advice.

Where are Maple Ridge’s worst crime hotspots?

The answer might surprise you – and thanks to a new tool released by the City of Maple Ridge in cooperation with the RCMP, residents will find it easier than ever to track property crime across the City.

Drawing inspiration from a similar project done in the City of Nanaimo, Maple Ridge’s crime map is an ongoing database created from RCMP data on property crime in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.

The interactive map is kept up-to-date with recent crime information, albeit on a twoweek delay, said Fred Armstrong, corporate communications director with the City of Maple Ridge.

Condolences continue to pour in on social media as news of long-time Maple Ridge resident Bob Shantz’s recent passing ripples through the community.

Known affectionately as Poppa Duck, thanks to his leadership role in the annual Rotary Duck Race, Shantz was “an example to all,” wrote

Thanks to a couple new Maple Ridge transplants, a historic neighbourhood in the City is about to receive a big heritage boost.

Two heritage homes, which were set to be demolished in North Vancouver, were rescued by Heather Patterson and her boyfriend Sean McQuillan

earlier this year.

The pair offered to pay the cost of relocating the homes to a new spot, in exchange for ownership of the houses themselves.

After some back and forth negotiating with the developer, Patterson reached an agreement that involved mounting the homes onto a barge, and floating them up the Fraser River.

The barge will eventually make its way to Port Hammond, hopefully sometime next week, said Patterson.

erry Fitzgerald only cried once the whole time he lived with ALS, from spring 2010 to the first month of 2013.

It happened the day he learned that a 21-year-old man was diagnosed with the same disease.

Gerry, who died from ALS on Jan. 5, 2013 at age 72, learned about the young man’s plight from his doctor.

t’s Emma Davison’s “highlight of the year,” and it takes place this Saturday.

Davison – along with her crew from Golden Ears Cheesecrafters (GEC) in Maple Ridge – will be making their fourth annual pilgrimage to Whistler, to participate in the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival.

The event is put on by the dairy farmers of Canada who invest millions of dollars into the event, Davison explained.

“It’s basically to promote Canadian cheeses and local cheese makers, including ones who come all the way out from Ontario, Quebec, and even Newfoundland.”

All the participants congregate at the top ERIC ZIMMER of Blackcomb Mountain, and people can come check out what essentially is an all-cheese farmers market.

The actual rolling itself sees cheese aficionados racing in different heats down the slopes of Blackcomb after an 11-pound wheel of cheese until a male and female champion is declared.

“People just topple head over heel basically the whole way down,” said Davison. “It’s incredible to watch.”

Helmets are required and body padding is recommended.

The event takes place during the multi-day Crankworx mountain bike festival, so there’s already large crowds on the mountain who come to check it out.

“People come out in crazy costumes and gear and it’s really cool,” Davison said.

Does anyone from GEC participate in the run?

“No, it’s too dangerous,” Davison laughed. “I need my staff there to be able to work and not be injured.”

CanoeKayak BC executive director and Maple Ridge resident Mary Jane Abbott is in the midst of what she describes as a “crazy summer, in a good way.”

Abbott and Pitt Meadows Paddling Club founder Rick Hammer recently returned from the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, where they served as officials at the kayaking competition.

The games’ kayaking included singles, doubles, and double unified events.

The games were held at the same time as the U.S. kayaking championships, so due to scheduling conflicts, it was short on officials. “They knew that we ran programs in Canada so they came to us and asked us for support,” Abbott said.

Hammer and Abbott were the two B.C. officials among the five from across the nation selected by Canoe/Kayak Canada.

From that experience they were off to Wood Buffalo, Alta., and the Western Canada Summer Games, where from Aug. 7 to 11, the two officiated and, Abbott added, “silently cheered and supported our B.C. athletes.”

Rick Hammer and Mary Jane Abbott were honoured to officiate the kayaking competition at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. be at the BC Cup #4 Regatta in Nanaimo, a provincial regatta that is hosted monthly across the province for para, masters, novice and U15 athletes to gain valuable racing experience in both singles and team boats.

Abbott’s frenetic month doesn’t end there; on Aug. 17 and 18, she’ll be in the Vancouver Island village of Zeballous (accessed from a 40 km logging road off Highway 19) for an Aboriginal Sport Development Camp for athletes eligible to compete in the 2017 North American Indigenous Games in Toronto.

It keeps going.

From Aug. 19 to 22, she’ll embark on a marathon drive to Ottawa with a coach from Nanaimo to get B.C. boats to the national championships.

While in the Nation’s Capital, Abbott will attend meetings as a member of national committees.

Then, on Aug. 25, Abbott will take in day one of the national championships before taking a night flight back to Vancouver.

Finally, from Aug. 26 to 28, she’ll work as the event coordinator for the dragonboat portion at Burnaby Lake of the 55-plus BC Games, with 500plus participants expected.

“During all of this we have

five staff on two teams in the field delivering participation programs for all ages across the province,” Abbott said.

Abbott said September “will be a dream” with only the Pacific Cup Regatta to direct her focus on.

She said this is a “huge event in Maple Ridge that is the culmination of all the BC Cups with the Pacific Northwest attending.”

Maple Ridge’s most decorated para-swimmer, Nathan Stein, is continuing his remarkable summer, as he collected a pair of podium finishes in one day at the Para-Pan American games in Toronto last week.

Stein first swam to a bronze in the 50m freestyle, an event which has been a staple for Stein since he earned a silver at the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Later, Stein would add a silver in the 100m butterfly, after swimming to a fifth place finish in the event earlier this summer at the para-swimming world championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

Appearing on the CBC morning talk show, Canada Nathan Stein AM, Stein said Para-swimmer the experience of swimming in his home country – even if it wasn’t his hometown – was incredible.

“I have lots of family and friends here watching me,” said Stein.

Stein first swam with the local Haney Neptunes Aquatic Club before a degenerative bone disease in his knee forced the young athlete to undergo surgeries to repair the joint.

Stein has one more race, the 100m freestyle, scheduled for Friday before returning home.

YASKOW, Nicholas “Neil” Aged 92, of Maple Ridge, BC, passed away peacefully on August 5th, 2015. Neil was born July 31, 1923 in Rossburn, Manitoba. Neil was raised on the family farm and his love for growing stayed with him his entire life. He served in the Second World War and returned home to marry the former Martha “Marge” Borkowsky on August 23, 1951. For the most part of his life he was involved in construction; building the family home and numerous businesses.

After retirement Neil took up horseshoes where he excelled in many tournaments over the years winning awards and trophies.

Neil is survived by his wife Martha, his children: Wayne (Janice) Yaskow of Abbotsford, BC, Sandra (Merle) Ransom of Pitt Meadows BC, Elaine (Gord) Pidcock of Clearwater, BC, six grandchildren: Sharon, Neil, Alana, Daryl, Ryan, Lisa, and three great-grandchildren: Kiyah, Emily and Ardyn.
