With election season underway the first polls are coming in by individual riding.

Company ThreeHundredEight (ThreeHundredEight.com) has listed aggregate polling data from multiple sources on their website.

The current polling for the Central Okanagan-SamilkameenNicola show incumbent Conservative MP Dan Albas leading polls with 37.9 per cent with New Democrat challenger Angelique Wood just behind at 34.5 per cent and Liberal party candidate Karley Scott at 18.8 per cent.

The past 2011 election saw Dan Albas win with a strong 54 per cent of the vote. These polling numbers are showing he may have some serious challenges in this election as the NDP have been riding a wave of support across the country.

In other ridings poll numbers are even more interesting. In KamloopsThompson-Cariboo, incumbent MP Cathy McLeod has 35 per cent, heavily trailing New Democrat contender and former judge Bill Sundhu, who has taken the lead with 48.3 per cent.

Taken as a whole across the country, if there were an election tomorrow, these numbers project a Conservative lead of 129 seats, 41 seats shy of a majority.

As fears of recession rise, the polls have reflected growing economic concerns of Canadians. While Canada has, since the financial crisis of 2008, been the leading G7 country economically, the recent drop in oil prices has left many Canadians questioning the stability of the economy.

Pundits speculate that these concerns that could turn the longest election in modern Canadian history into one of the tightest and most contested.

The 2015 election in a nutshell The writ officially dropped on Aug. 2, ushering in the start of an unprecedented 11-week election campaign, and four candidates — incumbent Dan Albas (Conservative), Karley Scott (Liberal), Angelique Wood (NDP) and Robert Mellalieu (green Party) — are vying for your vote come Oct. 19 to be the Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola member of parliament.

The election campaign will be more than twice as long as the 2011 federal election and the longest since 1926.

Candidates and political parties can spend twice as much as they were permitted to under a traditional 37-day campaign.

Those running in Central OkanaganThe expense limit for Similkameen-Nicola candidates is set at $237,136.

The candidates can recoup up to 60 per cent of eligible expenses via taxpayer-funded rebates and politi-

cal parties can do the same for up to half of eligible expenses.

The electoral boundary Merritt is in has been reconfigured and the number of ridings in this year’s election increases to 338 from the 308 in 2011.

Previously, the local riding was called Okanagan-Coquihalla and included the towns of Merritt, Logan Lake, Peachland, Penticton, West Kelowna and Summerland.

The new riding stretches to the U.S. border and incorporates the towns of Princeton and Keremeos, and parts of the City of Kelowna, but excludes Penticton, which has changed ridings.

When Parliament was dissolved earlier this month, the Conservatives had 159 seats, the NDP had 95, the Liberal Party had 36, independents held eight, four were vacant and the Green Party, Bloc Quebecois and Forces et Democrats party each had two seats.

ALBAS He also worked with then-MP Stockwell Day, and when Day’s seat opened up, he ran and won it in 2011.

“Public service and working with people is where my desire is,” he said. “It’s been a very rewarding experience.”

He emphasized that he’s advocated for this region during his first tenure as MP. “I’ve stood in the House close to thirty times and raised either Merritt or Nicola Valley or Logan Lake, because we are so depended on resources to put food on the table,” he said.

He said that his government has done work towards trade that will benefit the Nicola Valley.

“Many of the wood products that come out of Merritt, a lot of the ore for example, that comes out of Highland Valley Copper, the two biggest places are Korea, which we now have a free trade agreement with, and Japan, which we are pursuing both bilateral and also through some partnerships.”

He said the reason he chose to run in the Central OkanaganSimilkameen-Nicola riding rather than South OkanaganWest Kootenay riding — which includes Penticton — was continuity, as it most closely resembles the previous riding.

“I’ve been a member of Parliament longer than I was a city councillor, so I’ve built a real bond, especially with the areas of Logan Lake and Merritt,” he said. “I’m actually quite excited about the opportunity to represent Princeton, because the same issues apply.”

He said the economy is an important issue in this election.

“We need to support things that provinces want, so for example for infrastructure, we’re partnering 50 per cent on roads and highways, and other projects that the provincial government needs.”

SCOTT In this position, she delivered programs and services in aboriginal and disadvantaged urban communities.

During her time in the public sector under both Liberal and Conservative federal governments, Scott delivered programs that addressed issues such as economic development, homelessness and employment.

In 2009, she decided to take a leap of faith and pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer.

The mother of two young children earned her degree from the University of Calgary in 2012 before she and her husband and children moved to West Kelowna where she practices law.

Scott is now hoping to make a return to public service.

“I loved, loved, my work with the federal government,” Scott said, noting the work she did and the impact she could have on people’s lives was very rewarding.

Some of the biggest election issues are growing an economy that addresses and has a positive impact on climate change, supporting families and investing in infrastructure, Scott said.

For Scott herself, addressing the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women is a high priority.

“It’s shameful that this is going on and as an indigenous woman, it’s important to me to address,” she said.

She also thinks the riding needs to hear less from Ottawa, and Ottawa needs to hear more from the riding.

“I don’t think that Caucus should be a mutual admiration society of people who basically speak and it’s an echo chamber,” she said.

Although she has no personal connection to Merritt, Scott said she understands the types of issues for small towns having grown up in one.

After researching policies and platforms of each of the federal parties for the last election, he said he was surprised to find out he aligned closest with the Green Party.

That started his involvement with the Greens on a provincial level, and he was approached by the federal party three months ago to run for MP. “I’m under no illusion that I’m going to be winning any seats or heading to Ottawa,” he said. “But we need to have a Green choice on the ballot.”

He said if he could “blow the wind a little greener” by increasing the popular vote for the party, he would consider that a victory.

He identified apathy as a big election issue.

“Not voting along your values, trying to do strategic voting or being concerned about wasting a vote, those kinds of things,” he said. He said he’s trying to convince people to just vote, period.

Although he doesn’t have a strong personal connection to Merritt, he said he does love to fish. He also grew up in Duncan and Chemanis, and lives near a mill in Kelowna, so he’s familiar with the logging industry.

“The logging thing is one of the things where I kind of diverge from the Green Party’s vision,” he said. “I think of logging as just another crop, it just takes longer to grow.”

Though he insists it should be done responsibly, there is a place for it in the economy.

He said that what would help Merritt is a way to process raw lumber domestically, rather than shipping it out to foreign markets.

He also thought tourism in the area should be bigger, and the federal government should be doing more advertising to Americans.

Her bid for another term was unsuccessful.

Wood told the Herald she sees a reflection of the challenges between the federal riding and her former district.

“The challenges of Area G were, I think, somewhat similar to what our challenges in this new riding are —[A] pretty vast area with not a huge population, some pockets of wealth and some pockets of more economic downturn or distress,” Wood said, noting the rural and urban divide between parts of this riding.

Merritt’s biosolids issue is a good example of this, she said, as biosolids from urban cities are dumped in this rural location.

As for her stance on biosolids, Wood said it’s “a complicated thing to say in one sentence.”

One of the biggest election issue for Wood is jobs.

She said she’s sympathetic to challenges, such as seasonality, that small businesses face — as is her party.

“The NDP platform includes the small business tax from 11 per cent to nine per cent,” Wood said.

As the MP, Wood said she’d focus on promoting and developing a small scale, human-intensive agriculture system, which would facilitate jobs.

Wood lived in the Lower Mainland for 20 years, and worked at a high-end art gallery and the Museum of Anthropology in that time.

But Wood desired to get closer to nature, choosing to settle down in the Similkameen where she’s lived for the past decade.

Though not from Merritt, she has periodically visited.

“The best that I can do for Merritt, and the anywhere else is to listen to what the community tells me it needs and do what I can to facilitate it happening,” Wood said.

Merritt timber supply area discussed The following is an excerpt from the City of Merritt regular council meeting agenda for August 11, 2015 Merritt TSA public discussion paper — Wildlife tree retention Another significant source of uncertainty in this timber supply review is the amount of mature timber that will be reserved from harvest within cutblocks as the volume available for harvest decreases.

For the base case and alternative harvest forecasts, data from cutblocks harvested in the Merritt TSA between 2005 and 2013 showed an average within block retention for wildlife of about eight percent.

However, based on a review of the most recent approved forest stewardship plans, licensees have committed to a level of wildlife tree retention that averages about four per

cent.

This average reflects a range of values from three per cent in the Montane-Spruce ecosystem to 17 per cent in the relatively less common Ponderosa Pine ecosystem.

In a sensitivity analysis, reducing wildlife tree retention from eight per cent to four per cent resulted in harvest levels that are four per cent higher than in the base case.

Harvesting in drybelt Douglas-fir There has been no significant harvest of dry-belt Douglas-fir stands in the Merritt TSA for several years as recent efforts have been directed to the salvage of mountain pine beetle-impacted stands.

For the base case and alternative forecasts it was assumed that some level of partial-harvesting will occur in dry-belt stands as pine salvage ends.

Nicola Mining, hoping to reclaim the old Craigmont mines site, wants to make something clear: the soil that they’re bringing onto the site is not contaminated nearly to the degree the site has already been contaminated from decades of mining.

They also claim it will alleviate the dust that is swept from the dry, chalky tailings, into Lower Nicola and the surrounding region.

They are attempting to clear up what they are calling a misconception that the soil they’re putting on the site is contaminated at 250 parts per billion (ppb) of copper. That’s what the land use — referred to as schedule 4 — allows it to be.

Randy Murray, TNRD director for Area M, said he’s skeptical. “Why is it being brought up here, if it’s good soil, wouldn’t there be use for it

down there?” he said. “It’s probably got stuff in it we should be aware of and know what it is and all of that’s a concern, otherwise it wouldn’t conform to the contaminated sites regulation and they wouldn’t have to permit to do it. They could just truck it in if it was just dirt.”

But according to Peter Espig, the president of Nicola Mines, just because they’re allowed to have that degree of contamination, doesn’t mean that’s how contaminated the soil they’re bringing in actually is.

He told the Herald the levels of contamination from the first 80,000 tonnes of soil — coming from a site in Port Moody — are miniscule.

A hundred thousand dollars has been spent to test the soil by an independent third party, and the copper levels have averaged out to 13, 21, and 30 ppb.

Prospects for B.C.’s biggest investment VICTORIA – Now that the political back-and-forth is over, there are two questions left about the Petronas- TOM FLETCHER led proposal B.C. to make the VIEWS biggest privatesector investment in B.C. history.

Will it actually happen? And is it a good deal or a bad one?

Premier Christy Clark ducked the first question on the day the project agreement for Pacific Northwest LNG was approved by the B.C. legislature.

“After many predictions about the Canucks and the Alberta election, I don’t make predictions any more,” Clark said. “But I can say that this project has gone farther than any of our critics said that it would.”

For what it’s worth, my prediction is on record: it will go ahead. The latest evidence is the company’s continued, costly effort to gain federal and local approval for a suspension bridge to Lelu Island to minimize the marine impact.

Lax Kw’alaams Band members could not have had details on that change from an underwater pipeline when they voted to oppose the project in May. Is it a good deal?

The mayors of Prince Rupert and Port Edward have made their views clear — they see it as a lifeline for an area that has struggled for years with a faded forest and fishing industry.

The B.C. NDP is also now clear, having voted against the project agreement in the brief summer session of the legislature that concluded last week. Whether the project proceeds or not, this will be a key election issue in 2017.

“Trophy hunting” is an abused term

One of the phrases that kept coming up in the media is “trophy hunting.”

Over the years, animal rights and anti-hunting groups have associated this phrase with killing the biggest and healthiest animals, wanton killing of wild game, egotistical behaviour and waste of natural resources.

Of course, anyone familiar with hunting will just shake their head at such wild assumptions.

Personally, I never liked the term “trophy hunting.” I prefer the more appropriate phrase “selective hunting.”

This is not simply an exercise in semantics.

A trophy is a reward for achieving excellence in

the field of sport, trade or science.

An athlete receives a trophy medal for being better than any other competitor.

The Nobel Prize is a trophy given to people excelling in science, literature, politics and humanitarian causes, among many other professional fields.

If you were to ask a hundred hunters what constitutes a trophy to them, you would get a hundred different answers.

Some might say that it is the very first animal they have taken, or an animal they have taken

For most hunters a trophy is associated with the experience that led to taking the animal, not the kill itself.

The “selective” hunter, on the other hand pursues an animal that is very special to him, and for that he might go many years without taking any animals whatsoever until he happens to come upon that chosen animal.

lion in Africa will kill any legal lion, regardless of “trophy status.”

However, there are some selective hunters that look for the biggest animal and there is nothing wrong with that either.

In fact, that type of hunting is conservation at its best.

You see, most animals that have “trophy status” are also old.

They do not partake in active breeding anymore but still will jealously attack any younger male that dares to get close to a female.

From Page 6 NDP leader John Horgan and other MLAs made much of the lack of job guarantees, pointing to similar projects in Australia.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman issued a statement with excerpts from the state of Western Australia’s agreement for the Gorgon LNG project. The so-called guarantees contain qualifiers like this: “... except in those cases where … it is not reasonable or economically practical to do so, use labour available within Western Australia.”

Obviously there were no job guarantees, which could only exist in a command economy, in other words a communist dictatorship.

Everyone agrees that specialized trades such as welding alloys for low-temperature operation will be brought in. And LNG processing trains will be shipped in pre-fabricated from places like South Korea, as they have been in Australia and elsewhere.

Pacific Northwest LNG is on record with federal regulators that in the latter stages of construction, the use of foreign labour for the project could reach 70 per cent. Does that make it a bad deal?

Perhaps B.C. could attempt develop this expertise from the ground up. It seems to me that was tried with aluminum ship fabrication, and it didn’t work out too well.

For David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance, the question is how many large LNG projects, pipelines and all, can be managed at the same time as the Site C dam is being built. It was skilled labour shortages, and particularly a shortage of supervisors, that caused Australia to lose some of its proposed projects.

Keane said all LNG proponents here want to use as much local labour as they can, because it’s less expensive and it builds local support. And he disagrees that B.C. is a sweet deal for the industry.

Among other things, pipelines have to be built across two mountain ranges.

Not only that, B.C. producers would pay an LNG income tax, which is a first in the history of the industry. Add to that PST, GST, payroll taxes, municipal taxes and federal and provincial corporate income taxes. Add aboriginal revenue sharing, and we have a deal.

One of the reasons why there has been less wildlife before regulated hunting with a conservation aspect was introduced is because the younger males — the ones that do most of the breeding — were prevented from doing that by the older males.

Taking these old animals out of the population creates an opportunity for the younger males to step in and pass their genes on.

Thus our wildlife populations steadily grew in numbers and health.

Coming back to the lion named Cecil.

After all the dust of hype and make-believe has settled and self-serving animal rights groups have filled their bank accounts with money from gullible donors, it is refreshing to see that common sense and wildlife manage-

ment science prevail.

After scientists like Brent Stapelkamp, the man who spent many years researching Cecil came out in favour of hunting, plus many other scientists voicing their expert opinion on the benefits of regulated hunting, we see a big change.

The Zimbabwe government reversed the hunting ban before it even could be implemented.

Five of the seven airline companies that instituted a ban on transporting trophies from Africa reversed their decision and the notorious animal rights groups like PETA and Born Free, among countless others riding the animal rights parade wagon, have moved on to their next victim that promises to generate enough dollars to pay for the six figure annual salaries of their leaders.

How far we as a society have fallen when a dead lion, which

happens to have a name, can generate a worldwide outrage with hourly hype nurtured by media outlets!

Yet in that same two weeks ISIS murdered a woman by burning her alive for refusing to engage in an extreme sex act.

Many more have been sold into sexual slavery or have been killed.

Also in that same week, dozens of children in Zimbabwe starved to death and six white settlers had their land taken away from them and were hacked into pieces while still alive.

Not much was mentioned in the global news media about these crimes against humanity.

There was certainly no worldwide outcry and dedicated social media pages about that, because a dead lion was more important than the plight and suffering of people.

“We’ve got a contaminated site and we’re bringing stuff on to reclamate it to get rid of the dust and to allow plant life,” said Espig.

“We can’t reclamate the metal that’s down below, but what we can do is cover it so that the dust and metals don’t go to town, and we can cover it in a way so that plants can grow.” He said they plan to plant hay on the newly surfaced land.

“One of the misconceptions is that

we’re not bringing stuff up from the Lower Mainland,” he said.

“We’d be happy to get the materials from Merritt.”

Espig said that future dumps on the site would have similar levels of contamination as this first one, and guaranteed regular testing on the loads, surface and groundwater to ensure it’s contained.

He said Nicola Mining would make all of those tests public.

Murray said he isn’t so sure.

“Who’s to say that if they get approval maybe they start with this lower grade, responsibly measured dirt and then business

is driven by profit, who knows what might come in the future,” he said.

Asked about the testing, he said, “What do we do when the tests come back and say guess what: you’re hooped? Guess you’re contaminated.”

The project will also bring jobs, said Espig.

“We will be increasing the gravel mining outputs, so that will create jobs on the gravel side,” he said. “When you have the gravel side you’re creating transportation jobs.

When you’re bringing soil in you’re creating transportation jobs, and then that will allow us to put the mill back into operation, so it’s a total

of 35 jobs.”

He said those jobs would all be given to locals.

Murray said that in eight years as regional director, he’s received “maybe one” complaint of dust in the area.

He was also concerned with the amount of traffic the reclamation would bring to the area. “Those B-train [trucks] will haul right through here, right up the Lower Nicola Aberdeen Road, right past a park I just helped put about $500,000 into that community to make it beautiful, and there’s no crosswalk.

It’s dangerous,” he said.

“There’s got to be a lot more planning done.”

Friends of the Nicola Valley Construction begins on multi-use path join biosolids protest in Kamloops suburb

that arise from this project, which is expected to be complete by the middle of September.

He said there is a water truck working to help mitigate dust during construction, and workers are being careful to conserve the water by not leaving the hose running.

Council implemented greater watering restrictions last month as the Nicola Valley has been plagued with a Level 4 drought.

The trail runs along the south side of Voght Street behind properties along Irvine Avenue.

He said the contractor went doorto-door to inform nearby residents about the construction, and the city mailed notices of the project to residents earlier this year.

“It’s going to be a really nice amenity for the whole community,” O’Flaherty said of the trail that will connect River Ranch Road to Grimmett Street.

For the past few years, the city has been trying to establish a multi-use trail that would run from the Voght Street area to the Gasoline Alley part of town.

There are currently only two such paths in the community — one along the Coldwater River and another at Rotary Park.

Del Corsi doesn’t know what’s in the dust coming off the hill overlooking his home in the Gateway mobile home park in Dallas.

But in a little over a week, Corsi and other Gateway residents concerned about a topsoil operation on the Blackwell farm that uses biosolids hope to have some answers.

During a rally Tuesday, residents and members of the antibiosolids group Friends of the Nicola Valley (FNV) joined forces to collect samples of dust and dirt to be sent to a lab in Burnaby.

Analyzing the samples will take about nine days.

Residents in the area near Kokanee Way and Dallas Drive allege the topsoil-production site, operated by Arrow Trucking, is blowing biosolids onto and into their homes and causing health problems.

Corsi said residents are dealing with intense dust storms due to strong winds in the area, leaving behind a constant film of fine dust, which creeps into homes and vehicles.

“It burns your eyes,” he said. “That’s what everyone in the neighbourhood says, when you’re out in it, it burns your eyes.”

Earlier this month, City of Kamloops community safety manager Jon Wilson told city council he believed the dust issues on the site stemmed from an illegal sawdust pile set near the edge of the cliffs overlooking the mobile homes.

The last of the sawdust was cleaned up last week, though piles remain below, snagged in cobwebs, sidewalk cracks and planters.

Corsi said he’s grate-

ful that dust source is gone, but said heavy winds late last week brought the same fine dust down onto the neighbourhood, along with a septic smell.

He said the main source of the dust appears to be the Arrow site.

“You look at the other hillsides and there might be a little bit of dust,” Corsi said. “We have dust storms and they’re just coming from that exact site.”

Merritt resident Georgia Clement, who helped residents with the sample collection, said analysis of the dust will look for traces of metals, pathogens and prions — a proteinbased infectious agent

linked to various diseases of the central nervous system.

Dallas residents are paying for a portion of the costs and the rest may be funded either

by FNV or the Suzuki Foundation, which paid for testing of biosolids spread near Logan Lake at the request of FNV. A Suzuki Foundation scientist told the Merritt Herald analysis found concentrations of heavy metals above the limits set out in the province’s contaminated soils regulations, though within the allowable range for Class B biosolids, as set out by the Ministry of Environment.

Environment Minister Mark Polak

told the Herald there are two sets of guidelines because there are various levels of contamination.

“Even within the contaminated soils, there are different levels at which we require different types of treatment and different types of handling,” Polak said. “An area of soil can be contaminated and yet not to the extent where we would consider it harmful.”

The province has pledged to conduct a review of biosolids in the Nicola Valley.

Kamloops council is due to revisit the Dallas/Blackwell/ Arrow issue when it meets on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Merritt Timber Supply Area Timber Supply Review Public Open House The province’s chief forester will be setting a new allowable annual cut – the maximum volume of timber available for harvest each year – for the Merritt TSA later this year.

Section 8 of the Forest Act lists the factors that the chief forester must consider when determining an allowable annual cut. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations staff have been collecting and analyzing this information and the key findings are summarized in a discussion paper that is available for public review.

An open house has been scheduled as outlined below to provide an opportunity for members of the public to review the discussion paper and to ask questions.

The City of Merritt has begun work on a new bicycle path.

Construction began last week and at the moment the multi-use pathway along Voght Street is beginning to take shape.

The city’s planning and development services manager Sean O’Flaherty said the construction process has been making quick progress.

He said the grass of the entire pathway was stripped away in a day and a half, forming the outline of the soon-to-be completed asphalt pathway.

“It’s going to be smooth — it’ll be rollerblade-able,” he said.

The path is costing the city $133,398 for the tender bid city council approved for the project last month.

The city has $25,000 in its budget this year for projects of this nature and BC Hydro plans to commit some further funding, O’Flaherty said at a council meeting back in February.

Neither the budget for the trail project, nor the amount BC Hydro is contributing was known by the Herald’s press deadline.

O’Flaherty said he doesn’t anticipate there to be any cost overruns

Voluntary disclosures program could correct an error in your income tax return With tax season behind us, many of us are not likely thinking about taxes.

However, some of us may have realized an error was made the filing of the tax return.

If that is the case you may be asking yourself what to do about the error. Should you contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) right away?

If so, is there a process for reporting this? What are the

potential consequences for reporting an error?

These are all good questions and questions I am asked on a regular basis as mistakes in reporting happen.

First, let’s talk about the consequences if CRA finds out you have submitted an inaccurate tax return.

There are several different types of penalties that can be assessed if this is the case,

however, the most common and often the most severe are “gross negligence penalties.”

These penalties can be assessed under the Income Tax Act and grant the CRA the ability to assess a penalty amount which equals up to 50 per cent of the value of the tax that was avoided as a result of the error in the tax return.

Mistakes can happen when filing income tax From Page 10 This may sound terrifying, but there is a test that the CRA must pass in order to assess such a penalty and there are several defenses that you may raise.

I will talk further about gross negligence penalties in a later column.

One thing that is definitive is that CRA can only assess a penalty if they are aware of the inaccurate information.

This leads to the next question of whether you should and how you can tell CRA that you have made an error in your tax return.

If you choose to report the inaccuracy to CRA you will need to go through the voluntary disclosures program (VDP).

The VDP exists as an opportunity for taxpayers to voluntarily disclose an error that was made in their tax returns and potentially avoid penalties being levied.

I say potentially avoid penalties because the CRA can decide not to ‘accept’ your voluntary disclosure statement and if that were the case, the CRA now has been alerted to the inaccuracy and they may reassess you and levy gross negligence and other penalties.

One of the main reasons that CRA may choose not to accept your disclosure is if the disclosure is made after CRA has sent the taxpayer a notice of reassessment or given the taxpayer some other indication that they have noticed a potential issue with their tax return.

If this is the case, the CRA generally takes the position that the disclosure statement is not voluntary and the taxpayer may face reassessment and penalties.

The VPD can be a very useful program in trying to fix an honest mistake; however, there are numerous considerations that a taxpayer should take into account

before submitting a statement to the CRA. If you have questions

regarding these considerations I would highly recommend seeking the

advice of a tax lawyer experienced in making this determination prior

to diving in!

What is sleep hygiene?

One of my patients recently visited a neurologist for ongoing neck and arm pain after a car accident.

The report that the neurologist produced was fairly typical.

However, in one part of her report, she described how the patient’s “sleep hygiene” was very important to her long term recovery.

I was not familiar with this term so I did a little research on it myself.

I was familiar with the results I found but I thought it would be good to share them with you.

Getting enough — but not too much — good quality sleep is

Avoid napping during the day. It can disturb the normal pattern of sleep and wakefulness.

Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol too close to bedtime.

While alcohol is well known to speed the onset of sleep, it disrupts sleep in the second half as the body begins to metabolize the alcohol, causing arousal.

Vigorous exercise should be taken in the morning or late afternoon. A relaxing exercise, like yoga, can be done before bed to help initiate a restful night’s sleep.

Food can be disruptive right before sleep. Stay away from large meals close to bedtime. Also dietary changes can cause sleep problems, if someone is struggling with a sleep problem, it’s not a good time to start experimenting with spicy dishes. And, remember, chocolate has caffeine.

Establish a regular relaxing bedtime rou-

tine. Try to avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep. Don’t dwell on, or bring your problems to bed.

Associate your bed with sleep. It’s not a good idea to use your bed to watch TV, listen to the radio or read.

Make sure that the sleep environment is pleasant and relaxing. The bed should be comfortable, the room should not be too hot or cold, or too bright.

Why is it important to practice good sleep hygiene?

Sleep hygiene is important for everyone, from childhood through adulthood. A good sleep hygiene routine promotes healthy sleep and daytime alertness. Good sleep hygiene practices can prevent the development of sleep problems and disorders.

How does someone know if his or her sleep hygiene is poor?

Sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness are the most telling

There is an interesting approach to understanding anger which suggests that what annoys us most are those people or situations that mirror back some aspect of ourselves.

At first glance, that might not appear to make a lot of sense.

We generally tend to be more accepting of those who are like us, than those who are different, so why would we get angry if an aspect of ourselves was being reflected back to us?

We don't recognize that aspect of ourselves in the other person, because it is an aspect that we possess, but are in denial about.

Why are we in denial about it?

Probably because it isn't something that we're proud of.

For example, A father might be annoyed at his son for not being assertive and standing up for himself.

In this case the father may be bothered

because he does not feel strong and confident himself, and can't stand to see those traits in his son.

A woman may be upset because her partner is not romantic anymore and doesn't do all the little things that he used to.

She may be feeling that she wants more romance in her life

without realizing she’s not as romantic as she once was.

While anger is a natural and acceptable emotion, it is important for us to look deeply into the reasons for our anger before we vent it inappropriately.

As I stopped to look at the owers I thought, “What a creation!” These little owers have a bit of sweetness in them, and the bees were made to be able to collect this sweetness. They then put it into the honey comb and make honey with it.

Let’s think again of the bees. Jesus put the honey(Holy Spirit) into the owers(believers) and He wants us to help distribute that to others to show them the love of Jesus.

With all that is going on in the world, What a Creator to go through all this to Jesus has given us His Word. We need to provide some sweetness for us. That’s how study the Word and nd Jesus in there. That much He loves His people. will make life sweet and not violent.

Bowden wins Coyote Collision Open in Merritt sweep Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

Nicola Valley golfers can be forgiven for feeling pretty good about themselves these days after taking the top four placings at the annual Coyote Collision Men’s Open tournament at the Merritt Golf and Country Club on the weekend.

Leading the pack in the 68-player field was MGCC men’s club captain Brent Bowden, who went four-under on Saturday en route to a two-round winning score of 141. That was three strokes better than runner-up and fellow Merrittonian Steve Doubinin, who closed with a one-under 71 on Sunday to make things interesting.

Bowden’s 68 on Saturday was his best-ever score on the Merritt course.

“I’ve shot 69 two or three times, but never 68. It was pretty satisfying,” he said.

The Merritt Secondary School counselor conceded that his long game on Saturday was nothing to write home about, but that his approach shots and

greens-play made all the difference. He scored a pair of deuces on day one, and added a third on Sunday to go along with an eagle three on the 492-yard 10th hole.

“Both my wedge and putter were working for me,” Bowden said.

After Bowden and Doubinin, the next three places in the standings were very much a family affair.

Perennial contender Adrian Reynoldson charged hard on Sunday with the day’s best score of 70 to finish in third at 147, followed by brother Jack in fourth at 149. The triumvirate was completed by Adrian’s son, Aaron, in fifth with a finishing score of 150.

Aaron currently lives in Kelowna.

Playing in the final foursome on Sunday with Bowden, Doubinin and Jack Reynoldson was 2013 Coyote Collision winner Luke Ghostkeeper, who now calls Kamloops home.

Two of Ghostkeeper’s tee shots on Sunday, and the subsequent recoveries, will be the subject of much table-talk at the 19th hole for years to come.

On the sixth hole, the left-handed Ghostkeeper shanked his tee shot mightily

and put his ball on the other side of the river on the fourth fairway.

A beautiful iron shot over the water and the trees miraculously got him back to the fourth green, where he twoputted for par.

Even more improbable was Ghostkeeper’s play to close out the front nine on Sunday.

Merritt professional golfer Roger Sloan finished in a seven-way tie for 37th place at the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship at the Montreux Golf & Country Club in Reno, Nevada on the weekend.

The top-40 finish earned Sloan, 28, a payday of $13,020 and brought his yearly earnings in his rookie season on the PGA Tour up to $133,048.

Otters make plenty of splash at Regional Championships Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

The 32-member Merritt Otters swim team posted a whopping 59 top-eight finishes at the Okanagan regional championships in Kamloops on the weekend.

The impressive showing included 50 individual and nine relay appearances in event finals at the Brock pool on Saturday and Sunday.

“We had a great regionals,” Otters head coach Leroy Slanzi said.

“The best part of the weekend was that almost all of our swimmers continued to set best times throughout the meet.”

Slanzi noted that veteran Otters Jensen Cavaliere and Sumeeti Chhabra broke best times that had lasted two years.

Four Otters swimmers will be continuing on to the B.C. championships in Victoria on the August 22 weekend.

They are Isaac and Paige Asselstine, Kendra Marklund and Jamie Neill.

Youth basketball association gearing up for fall season Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

The Merritt Youth Basketball Association is hoping to build on the tremendous success of its inaugural season this past winter by offering another 10-week session beginning in September.

The MYBA autumn season will run from the third full week of September through until the final week of November. It will be open to all boys and girls in Grades 4 through 7 (or age equivalent).

The focus of the youth basketball program will once again be skill development, team play, game strategy and the fostering of a fundamental love for the game.

Expert instruction is provided by qualified basketball coaches, with help from interested adults from the community and Merritt Secondary School var-

sity players.

“We decided to move to the fall so that we can take advantage of an even larger pool of experienced coaches,” MYBA spokesperson Dave Andersen said. “In the winter months, some of those coaching candidates are busy coaching at the high school level and it’s just too much to ask of them to do both.”

Last winter’s 10-week session had over 60 keen participants.

“We were very happy with the turnout and enthusiasm last winter,” Andersen said. “We want to see the program just get bigger and better.”

Grade 4 and 5 boys and girls will see their sessions held on Monday evenings at Collettville Elementary School starting on September 21 and finishing on November 23.

If registration numbers are sufficient, a second session may be held on

Wednesday each week.

Grade 6 and 7 boys and girls will have their sessions run on Thursday evenings at the former Coquihalla Middle School beginning on September 24 and wrapping up on November 26. Once again, registration numbers may dictate a second session, which would be offered on Mondays.

The specific times of the practices on each of the aforementioned days of the week are still to be determined. Coaches will contact players with the details.

Andersen said that there will be no cap on registration numbers, adding, “We want as many kids as possible involved.”

The cost of registration for the MYBA fall session can’t be beat. It is $50 per player if paid on or before September 14. After that date, the cost rises to $75 per

The third annual Merritt Centennials golf tournament is all set to go this Saturday at the Merritt Golf & Country Club.

“There are only a couple of spots left for foursomes,” Cents’ marketing and communications manager Meagan King said.

“Interested individuals or groups need to get in touch with me right away.”

Close to 70 golfers are scheduled to tee off on Saturday with a shotgun start slated for 2 p.m. The numbers include quite a few past and present Centennials players, such as former NHLer and Merritt-born Ed Beers, along with the likes of Chris Forsberg, Derry and Doneau Menard, Tyler Martin, Payton Schaeffer, Scotty Patterson, Dave Dunnigan, Danny Morrissey and Colin

Up for grabs during the nine holes of golf are two hole-in-one prizes: a 2015 Chevy Silverado donated

The golfing will be followed by a delicious dinner prepared by the MGCC staff, and

sional Roger Sloan, some vintage hockey sticks signed by former Cents’ teams, and four tickets on the Cents’ team bus to a regularseason game in West Kelowna this fall.

The fishing excursion is being offered by Evan Patterson (Scotty’s dad) of Bites-on Salmon Charters. The trip includes a five-hour saltwater outing on the 25-foot-long sportfish vessel “The High Five” out of downtown

Vancouver. A guide, one-day fishing licence, bait and tackle are also part of the package.

All funds raised from this year’s Merritt Centennials Golf Tournament go directly back to the hockey club.

A pair of Merritt Centennials’ alumni made sports headlines recently.

Former Cents’ defenceman Reece Willcox from Surrey has been recognized as one of the top-achieving student athletes in the NCAA’s East Coast Athletic Conference.

Willcox, 21, is entering his senior year at Cornell University, an Ivy League school. This is his third time winning the award.

In order to earn all-academic status, student-athletes must achieve a grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a scale of 4.00

over the previous three semesters.

Willcox, a fifth-round NHL draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, played two seasons with the Centennials (2010-12). In 118 career games in the BCHL, the six-foot-four-inch, 205-pound Willcox recorded 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points.

John Schiavo, 20, from East Patchogue, N.Y., has signed a professional hockey contract for the coming season with the Missouri Mavericks of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).

Schiavo spent last season with the Centennials. The gifted forward led the team in

scoring with 29 goals and 32 assists for 61 points in 58 games.

The Mavericks are an affiliate team of the NHL’s New York Islanders.

Schiavo attended the Islanders’ development camp this summer. The former roller hockey star wowed the crowd and made the sports news nationally by scoring two highlight-reel

shootout goals, one of them against former Cents teammate Anthony Pupplo.

In a recent interview with the BCHL’s Smart Hockey magazine, Schiavo revealed that he was looking to turn pro as his NCAA eligibility was being hindered by the fact that he was home-schooled in his final year of high school.

SUNSHINE OPEN A total of nine players from Merritt travelled the Coquihalla Highway on the weekend to compete in the Kamloops Tennis Club’s annual Sunshine Open tournament.

DBs perfect in Ladies Rules slo-pitch tourney Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD≠

The team’s full name may not be fit to print, but their play on the field of dreams speaks volumes.

The DBs (that’s what we’re going to call them) went a perfect 7-0 on the weekend to win the Ladies Rules Slo-Pitch Tournament at the Central Park ballfields.

In the championship game on Sunday afternoon, the DBs downed the host squad, Daddy’s Girls and Momma’s Boys, 18-5 to easily claim the title in the sixteam tournament.

In their defence, the runners-up went into the gold-medal game completely exhausted, having had to play six

games in a row, starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday, to earn their way into the title tilt via the back door.

On this weekend, however, the DBs were simply not going to be denied. In their seven round-robin and playoff games, the team bested their opponents by a combined score of 105 runs to 20.

The DBs got the job done at the plate and on defence. Chelsea Vaughan pitched all seven games, while Brandon Colwell led the charge from the hitters’ box.

The Ladies Rules tournament hosted mixed teams consisting of no more than three men in the lineup at a time. The males were

the only ones allowed to bunt, but weren’t allowed to hit a home run.

The slo-pitch season is far from over, with seven more tourna-

ments still on the schedule which runs until October 18.

Next up is the Hopes & Dreams Tourney on the August 22-23 weekend.
