Waking up Whalley’s Corner: Part 4

The struggles and triumphs of ‘The Strip’ See Whalley’s notorious 135A Street through the eyes of those on the front lines Now staff Twitter @amyreid87

S

antana said it was surreal the first time she stuck a life-saving syringe in someone’s arm at the Front Room on the Whalley “Strip” – aka 135A Street. “You open that door and you go flying for that Narcan kit,” the outreach worker recalled. “This person was unfortunately dark, dark, dark purple. They must have only been in that bathroom for two minutes. That’s all it takes. “We’ve had a lot of people go down here.” The Narcan kits include a medication called Naloxone that can reverse the effects of an overdose from opioids such as heroin, methadone and morphine, and are provided by Fraser Health. Santana, who asked her last name not be used, has now administered the drug more than a dozen times. “You’re shaky the first couple times, it’s hard to break off the cap, it’s glass so you get cut, but it’s sort of like when a child’s choking – you just go,” she said. “Immediately, you think, ‘I have to save

this person.’ You don’t think twice.” But the Naloxone doesn’t always take. “We have days where we lose people, so that’s a toll. Generally, 99 per cent of them, they come back.” Roughly 250 Lookout staff in the Lower Mainland are trained to administer the overdose antidote and so far, it’s been used about 70 times by the non-profit. Of those, 40 or so were in Surrey. There’s been an issue with street drugs being laced with Fentanyl in Surrey, said Darin Froese, director of operations for Lookout Emergency Aid Society, which runs the emergency Gateway Shelter and the Front Room. Fentanyl, he explained, is a synthetic narcotic that’s 50 to 100 times more toxic than other opioids. Froese estimated the organization has seen a 50-per-cent increase in incidents over the last six months or so, due to local street drugs being laced with the potent drug. “In some cases, we’ve had three or four overdoses in one day,” he added. “Obviously there’s a bad batch of drugs on the street.” Darin Froese, director of operations for Lookout Emergency Aid Society, holds a Narcan kit used to treat those having overdoses from Fentanyl, a potent drug that’s being laced into other narcotics on the see › page 8 streets of Whalley and other parts of Metro Vancouver. There is no obligation and the only thing you have to lose is your pain.

THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS AND CONDITIONS HAVE SEEN PHENOMENAL RESULTS USING THE SPINAL DECOMPRESSION INSTITUTE’S CUSTOMIZED TREATMENT PROTOCOL AND CLASS IV LASER THERAPY: • Bulging or Herniated Discs • Protruding or Slipped Discs • Spinal Fusion

There are many causes of pain. Some people develop it over time, while others are injured in sports, work, or auto accidents. No matter what the cause, people cope with pain differently. Our new laser treatment is the next BIG step in relieving your pain.

• Sciatica or Arthritis Pain • Stenosis or Degenerative Discs • Leg/Foot Numbness or Pain • Neuropathy Pain • Knee or Hip Pain • Sports Injuries/Sprains & Strains

"I had been experiencing burning pain in my feet for over ten years. I had seen multiple physicians in the area, including a neurologist. I was diagnosed with neuropathy in my feet. I tried several prescriptive pain medications which only made me dizzy, sleepy and still left with severe pain. I was at the end of my ropes. A good friend told me about the laser treatment and other protocols available at Spinal Decompression Institute and decided to give it a try. I was pain free after two weeks and continue to have long lasting relief 4 months later. This amazing treatment has given me my life back! I can sleep without pain and can walk outdoors again! Thank you Spinal Decompression Institute for offering this treatment to our community!" —Angela S.

We find that many people have seen a family doctor, chiropractor or therapist, but are still dealing with the same pain. We are able to help many of these people, because of our new robotic laser treatment. This class IV laser therapy has been used to treat painful and debilitating conditions like joint pain, back pain, neuropathies, and many other acute injuries. Experience the difference our newest treatment can bring and get your life back.

IS SURGERY THE ANSWER? Many of our patients have been told they need surgery. It can be true that surgery may be the answer for certain types of acute and chronic pain. However, we have found success with many of these patients, due to our state-of-the-art class IV laser treatments. When considering your options, ask yourself this question: IF THERE IS A SOLUTION TO YOUR PAIN THAT DOESN’T REQUIRE SURGERY, IS IT WORTH EXPLORING?

WHY SPINAL DECOMPRESSION INSTITUTE?

THE SOLUTION: SPINAL DECOMPRESSION INSTITUTE’S CLASS IV LASER THERAPY Spinal Decompression Institute is introducing a new laser technology that is helping patients find relief from pain and injury quickly without the use of surgery, or habit-forming prescriptions. Makers Meetup

Now contributor Goble@shaw.ca

WHALLEY – It’s called a “Makers Meetup,” and I didn’t know what the heck to expect going in. Bread makers? Candlestick makers? All scrubbing their way out to sea? Turns out the term “maker” is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Sure, a maker can make just about anything, including bread and candlesticks. But the trendy stuff, the stuff already feeding a techie minirevolution, involves a mix of engineering smarts, DIY ingenuity and, most often, a hodge-podge of electronic parts and/or Lego-like computer modules that have only recently become this prevalent and this affordable. All this and, of course, a fervent desire to make stuff. Old-schoolers might remember Heathkit. Through the mid-1990s, Heathkit made ready-to-assemble kits. With some kits, you could build a radio. With others, you could build a transceiver or a home stereo component. Makers do the same sort of thing, except from scratch. No kits. And they experiment. If, for example, a given product does not exist, they try to figure out a way to create it. And that’s where the “Meetup” in Makers Meetup comes in real handy. The website Meetup.com is a social media portal where people with similar interests can introduce themselves and potentially get together. Being somewhat of

on a $30 credit card-sized board) is a good start. With the help and advice of her new Maker Cube mates, and after just one week on the project, Lindsey now sees a solution. She’ll use her Raspberry Pi, along with an FM transmission module and a makeshift antenna, to broadcast her messages through nearby radios. She will, in effect, run her own localized FM station. Namaste. J Sivakumaran, one of the earliest members of Maker Cube, calls the Meetups a “gym for nerds. You don’t expect people to buy $5,000 worth of equipment to keep fit. So the workout people go to a gym. Same thing here.” Brendan Matkin, a grad student at nearby SFU, and a guy who’s spent a lot of time recently “trying to connect with traditional methods of creation” (he’s taken up baking, for one), talks about “trying to get people to come out of the woodwork.” He also talks excitedly about the new Maker Cube, rented space just down the road (at Tomoe Yoshihara rides his electric skateboard at City Centre Library during a recent Makers Meetup. (Photo: GORD GOBLE) #202-10663 King George Blvd., 604-754-8882) with storage sports an IQ of about 2,000 and and tools, 24/7 availability a counter-culture still gaining and key-card access. There, he would rather spend her free traction, the “maker” crowd says, members can get down to time in intelligent discourse has really taken to the Meetup than knocking back brews. She’s serious work together – or on concept. A quarter-million of their own. them have joined up worldwide, also into new age stuff like zen As Matkin speaks, Tomoe meditation. She says “Namaste” in 1,300 groups. Yoshihara, a clearly brilliant at the end of conversations. In Surrey, makers have SFU mechatronics student who Woo wants to broadcast banded together under the converts regular bicycles into name “Maker Cube.” They meet inspirational messages electric bikes when he’s not in throughout her home, at Friday evenings at City Centre class, whips by. Members of Surrey’s Maker Cube group will take part in Surrey Libraries’ inaugural Maker Showcase, on Saturday, Sept. 26 at City Centre Library, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “The official submission period is now over, and we’re planning on having nine presenters” at the showcase, Cristina Teixeira, Information Services Librarian at Guildford Library, told the Now. “We have people showcasing 3D printers, Lego NXT mindstorms (so there will be a robot battle!), Meccano models, interactive arts and crafts, and video pieces, to name a few. Some of them are individuals and some are groups, including Surrey Maker Cube and the Fraser Valley Makerspace.” Also participating is Arts Umbrella, SFU’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) and a library-led A/V Club that meets once a month at Guildford Library, Teixeira added. Event details are posted at Surreylibraries.ca/makers. Tom Zillich

Kids read to shelter animals New ‘Tales 4 Tails’ program aims to help young readers and also creatures Tom Zillich Now staff Twitter @tomzillich

DELTA — A new program at Delta Community Animal Shelter has kids reading to creatures in care. So far, close to 20 children have signed up for the Tales 4 Tails Reading Enhancement Program, which aims to improve kids’ reading skills while helping to calm and socialize animals at the shelter. The program was launched at the beginning of July. “It has been incredible to observe kids reading to the shelter animals,” said Sarah Jones, manager of the Hopcott Road facility. “The cats cozied up very quickly to their Tales 4 Tails buddy and were very much at ease, and that made the kids feel so proud.” During a recent session, North Delta resident Ryan Jull, 11, read from a “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book as Kimmie, a 12-year-old ragdoll cat, roamed nearby. “I’ve read to her before, and this is my fourth time here already,” said Ryan.

We have some rabbits, too, but we warn kids that they’ll try to eat the books. “I love animals, so it’s great. My mom is allergic to cats, so we can’t have one at home.” Kimmie wasn’t eating anything until after the first time Ryan read to her, Jones said. “It’s amazing how she’s responded to it,” Jones added. Some dogs are part of the program, but it’s mostly cats, she explained. “We have some rabbits, too, but we warn kids that they’ll try to eat the books,” Jones said with a laugh. Similar programs are operated at animal shelters in the U.S.

“I wanted to figure out a way that children could get involved with the shelter animals, as the future of animal welfare is grounded in how our children feel about them,” Jones said. “These kids are still too young to volunteer here, so this is something they can do to help.” For every 15-minute reading session they do, kids get a ballot to enter in a grand prize draw of books donated by Fraser Valley Regional Library. Waking up Whalley’s Corner: Part 4

‘It’s hard to say, ‘Bring your kids to Whalley.’’

In mid-July, RCMP sent out a release warning drug users that there were eight drug overdoses within a 24-hour period, which they attributed to heroin. No one died in those instances, according to police. The reality of 135A Street – aka “The Strip” – is there are hardcore drug users along it, Froese said. “While it might seem that the strip hasn’t changed, in our mind it has because we’re continuing to house about 400 people a year into transitional and permanent housing,” Froese told the Now. “It might not seem like it everyday where along the strip you might see somewhere between five and 20 people outside the (Front Room) drop-in, but the services are working. Tons of people are being helped.” He also noted that during a time of massive population growth, homeless numbers aren’t going up, which is a measure of success. “But that doesn’t mean everything’s perfect,” he continued. “We want the same thing the business community wants. We want a reduction in the amount of visible street homeless…. We want a healthy, vibrant, retail community and we feel we’re part of the solution but we respect, sometimes, these tensions that occasionally arise between nonprofits and businesses.” Froese said the city’s done a great job of bringing economic development into the community, but it’s now time for the social infrastructure to catch up. Vancouver has a huge amount of resources and infrastructure compared to Surrey, he stressed. The Gateway emergency shelter is in a makeshift, retrofitted apartment building. “Obviously that’s going to change in the next couple of years,” he said, pointing to a new purpose-built shelter the city has planned near Surrey Memorial Hospital that Lookout hopes to run. He also hopes to see the city set up a winter shelter this year. In 2012-13, a 40-bed winter shelter provided 24-hour shelter to 157 people over six months, and led to 72 people finding long-term housing. But since the landowner sold the property, the city has been unable to find a new location. “This was a vibrant area in the 70s and 80s,” said Froese. “As more development takes place, it’s becoming more vibrant. It’s making a comeback.” In the meantime, the harsh realities of the area continue.

Robinson said, “I don’t know that they want that kind of help. This seems to be the location for drug deals.” Liz Fraga, also on the sponsorship committee, she said street people in the area are becoming “more and more brazen. “They’ll come right up here, there was one who picked the scabs off his arms. He was The Whalley cadet corp, just a stone’s throw bleeding, he touched the doorway, it was all full from the shelter, is losing members due to the of blood. She acknowledged scenes like that are rare, On the steps of the cadet’s deck in Whalley’s and said for the most part they move along, “Ground Zero,” Nancy Robinson gazed but both women said they feel neglected. through a black wrought iron fence that “Yes they need help, but we’re trying to offer separated her from the dozen or so people the kids a program where they can excel,” said wandering around on the other side of it. Several shopping carts rolled by. Insp. Ghalib Bhayani, a community support and safety officer, said he’s not fond of the street’s nickname, but is familiar with its struggles. “The issues there are particularly related to Robinson, who is on the sponsorship drug trafficking, homelessness, addiction… so committee for the Whalley Cadet squadron, our plan there has been to meet with all of our said things are getting worse. partners – bylaws, fire, the city, social planning, Their hall has been broken into three times to meet with the outreach, to meet with BC in the last six months, she said, and just a Housing, Fraser Health – all the parties that are few weeks ago the fence was installed to keep going to have a piece of this pie. We were noticing a lot of people from sequestered in the hall. They don’t know what’s outside of Surrey coming down here. “In other words it increased the appearance going on, but we do, we’ll phone the police.” She said the issues have resulted in six cadets – people are concerned about appearances, it’s the perception of crime. You drive by, it’s dirty, leaving recently, and the group struggles to recruit new members. While the squadron has it doesn’t look clean, there’s fences up, there’s a lot of people pushing shopping carts. To them, 40 cadets on paper, usually only 20 show up. it feels unsafe. So the number of people in “It’s hard to say, ‘Bring your kids to the area changed the feel and the look and we Whalley.’” Asked if she thinks moving the shelter from decided as a group that it was a good time to go in and offer these supports.” the strip to the hospital district will help, EDITOR’S NOTE: In our special series Waking up Whalley’s Corner, we are sharing stories from the area around 108th Avenue and King George Boulevard.

Cadet squadron copes

A focus on the strip is ongoing, he said. “We’ve taken back all the resources, and now we’re monitoring it. Did what we do work? Based on that we’ll make a determination on following up again.” And RCMP continue with regular foot and car patrols, with the need being assessed on a weekly basis based on calls for service and the number of incidents. Bhayani said he’s seen a “visible improvement” in the area since he took his current role on in October, but acknowledged it can look like a sketchy place. “If you don’t know the area, and you don’t know the context, if you drive down the strip it looks very scary. It’s about understanding the context that all the service providers are there – the food bank, you’ve got housing, you’ve got the shelter.”

Hope on the horizon In five years, Bhayani predicts the area will become an entertainment district with cool restaurants, similar to that on East Hastings and Commercial Drive. “If we all work together, Whalley can be there in 10 years,” he continued. “If you walked in downtown Vancouver in 1985 it was terrible. And look at it now. That’s 25, 30 years, but Whalley is already 10 years into that gentrification, I think. I’m not a planner or a developer, but I can tell you, looking at the map, it has changed so much. Vacant lots are no longer vacant, we’re putting things up, it’s about beautification and development.” Despite the perception of Whalley, it’s actually a cool neighbourhood, Bhayani said. “It’s kind of edgy. I live in Vancouver close to the Downtown East Side, so for me, this is a very similar neighbourhood. It’s got some edginess to it but it also has that community feel. I don’t feel unsafe here walking down the street.... You can walk outside and see compassion on our front steps here.” NEXT IN THIS SERIES: We hit the streets with Nightshift Ministries as the group goes about its regular outreach. See the people of Whalley’s streets through their eyes. amy.reid@thenownewspaper.com

No gutter stuff

F

ederal election campaigning over these next 11 weeks will no doubt get rougher, nastier and cruder than we’re used to. This time around, politicians and their handlers will have more time on their hands to invent new ways to lower the bar. Of course, the media should report on the gutter stuff, as it will help voters consider the character of those who would govern us. That said, we sincerely hope the media in general will dig into issues important to Canadians, rather than dwell on trivialities. This newspaper will strive to bring to you stories that matter to you, related to our six local ridings, during this federal election campaign – not superficial stuff.

HIT: Kudos to Sybil Rowe for pushing the City of Surrey to install some portable water fountains in Whalley and Newton, to allow people to hydrate in the summer heat. Everyone needs water, and now it’s there for the sipping. MISS: The federal election campaign was launched Sunday, and it’s going be a long one – 11 weeks of promises and attack ads leading up to the Oct. 19 vote, making it the longest campaign in recent history. By that date, Canadians will be in danger of suffering election fatigue.

Surrey’s Rakhi Project a reminder of my own domestic abuse ReidItAndWeep Amy Reid

I

t was convenient that we had blackberry bushes at the side of our home growing up. It was how my mom would explain the cuts on her face. Convenient probably isn’t the right word. When her boyfriend hurt her, there was a myriad of excuses I heard her use. That was just one. Glass breaking. The dog barking. My mother screaming. My brother crying. It was the norm at my home for a time. I called the police during a fight on more than one occasion. They would come, but a stern warning was all he ever faced. He didn’t seem bad at first. He would help me with my homework. He would celebrate my school and athletic achievements. He’d watch all our favourite shows with my brother and I. He would

build tree forts for us. He was kind. Then something changed. Funny, that’s always the way these stories start. So as a child, I witnessed abuse. Then, as a young adult, before I met the man with whom I have two children, I let it into my life. It was short-lived, and I left the relationship, but I always swore that would never be me. After all, how could someone possible stay with someone who hurt them? But there I was. Being there firsthand made me understand both how easy it is to wind up in such a relationship, and how hard it is to get out of one. A domestic-abuse awareness campaign is currently underway in Surrey. I urge you to pay attention. Pay attention to warning signs. I fell down the stairs. I closed a door on my arm. I fell into blackberry bushes. Nobody gets hurt that often on their own. And I ask you to be understanding. I’ve been asked why I didn’t leave the first

time he hurt me. It’s not as easy to escape as some might think. Abusers don’t typically go away quietly when you decide to kick them to the curb or flee. They’ve lost control and that’s often what they thrive on. Earlier this year, a Surrey woman lost her life in what may have been a domestic dispute. As a reporter, I covered that death. As I stood outside the RCMP E-Division building after the press conference, I bumped into Surrey Sgt. Dale Carr. He told me the Domestic Violence Unit was “very engaged” with the couple. My heart sank. The suspect, Gordon Alexander David, has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault. The case has yet to go through the courts. In an abusive relationship, you never think they’ll take it that far. But who are we to know what others are capable of? The fifth annual Surrey campaign, the Rakhi Project, kicked off in Newton last week and runs to Aug. 29. Rakhi is a South Asian ceremony that

involves the tying of a “rakhi” (thread) by a sister on her brother’s wrist as a symbol of love, protection and respect. The Rakhi Project combines this tradition with domestic-abuse awareness by encouraging people to wear a purple bracelet. This year’s bracelets are $5, with proceeds going to the Surrey Coalition Against Domestic Abuse (SCADA). As a community, we can work together to help those suffering from abuse. Help spread awareness by taking part in this year’s campaign. Being able to see the warning signs and knowing how to get victims help is a step we can all take. They need our help. You can find Rakhi bracelets at Save-on Foods, Fruiticana, Surrey RCMP offices, DiverseCity Community Resources Society, select Vancity locations, Crystalworks and Take Five Café at Surrey City Hall. ❚ A big bouquet of roses to Cst. M. Frano for making my son feel better after a very scary situation. He’s still talking about seeing your police car. You have a great soul.

Raise a toast to pioneer The Editor, Re: The “Waking Up Whalley’s Corner” series of stories in the Now. Of course “Whalley” is the best name for the area. My great-grandfather was a businessman. He owned a gas station and general store. I’ve always believed our family name won the vote because they were well liked by the people in the area who frequented his business. I never met my great-grandfather Arthur Whalley. I did know and love my great-grandmother Hilda Whalley. She was proud of their history in Whalley’s Corner. I hope the next time someone has a few words to say about him that they raise that cold beer or glass of wine they enjoy and toast, “Arthur Whalley, businessman and pioneer of Whalley’s Corner.” I am a proud descendant. ❚ Roses to the people in line turning onto 56th Avenue off the new overpass on 196th Street. In a low car, I did not see the turning lane was closed. I was also preoccupied, thinking about my mom’s chemo. To the lady in the white car who honked and gave me the finger? Roses to you for making me realize how ugly that gesture is! ❚ Buckets of bouquets of roses to the South Fraser Community Band for their delightful performance at Kiwanis Park Place on July 30. Even if they are unaware that this is going on, they are very ignorant. ❚ Rotten tomatoes to the people who wrecked our shed and stole our lawnmower. Thanks to you, my son is now scared to go into our backyard alone because he thinks you’ll come back. I am a firm believer in karma. You’ll get yours one day. ❚ Rotten tomatoes to neighbours whose sports balls bounce off the neighbour’s house and land in their yard. The soccer ball that bounced of the railing of the deck at the back of my house will find its way to the donation bin. You are trespassing when you enter the yards of neighbouring homes.

The Editor, Re: “Whalley’s Round-Up Café takes you back in time,” the Now, July 30. I enjoyed the article on Whalley’s Round-Up Café, as I have the previous Whalley articles. Here’s an addendum regarding Goldie and Orest Springenatic: The Cindrich family lived on a farm Roebuck Road (yes, there’s a Cindrich Elementary School in Surrey). As a youngster, my brother, Joe Cindrich (he’s the guy recently exposing the dangers of Japanese knotweed on CBC Radio, in MacLean’s and on Global TV), delivered potatoes to the Round-Up Café. As his tip, Goldie would take a couple of potatoes and, using her wallattached chip maker, she would make him some potato chips. Potato chips were a “new” item, and we of the 1950s can probably tell of the time when we first had them. It’s fun to go to the Round-Up for a morning coffee as, often, the “table” expands to accommodate old neighbours and school chums. If Goldie is around, she always comes over to talk to her “potato delivery boy”! Annie (Cindrich) Kaps, Surrey

Federal election

New ridings, new names in Surrey and Delta Tom Zytaruk Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk

SURREY — The writ’s dropped and it’s officially game on, though Oct. 19 still feels far away. With Canada’s federal election 2015 comes some big geographical changes for ridings related to Surrey and North Delta. We will now have six MPs in this area, as opposed to four. So of the six new ridings B.C. is gaining, we have two of them. Before this campaign, the local electoral map was divided into Newton-North Delta, South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale, Surrey North and Fleetwood-Port Kells. But in this coming election, these ridings will slip into history, with only FleetwoodPort Kells maintaining its name, though its boundaries have changed. The new ridings are Cloverdale-Langley City, Delta, South Surrey-White Rock, SurreyNewton and Surrey Centre. North Delta, which used to be part of

SURREY — Surrey’s fleet of fire trucks is about to get a whole lot more advanced. Three new tankers will replace three currently in operation and, in a first for the city, they’ll be equipped with water-purification units. Currently, the fire department has five water tanker trucks

to serve the rural and agricultural areas in Surrey that don’t have fire hydrants. But now, thanks to the three new trucks, the fire service will have the ability to purify water, which would be particularly useful in the event of a water disruption resulting from a disaster. Each new water

adding they won’t be able to desalinate salt water. The fire service found, for an extra $25,000 a pop, they could add the water purifiers. All told, each truck will cost $420,000. The trucks are expected to be in use beginning in August.

tanker will be capable of filtering 500 imperial gallons per hour, or 12,000 per day. “We will have the capacity with having all three of these to provide safe drinking water as long as we have a fresh water source to draw it from – like a stream or a pool,” said deputy fire chief Dan Barnscher,

centre with $110,000 in 2015-16 and $110,000 in 2016-17. Meanwhile, Grewal’s NDP rival Garry Begg, who is hoping to unseat her in Fleetwood-Port Kells, is slamming the Tories “failure to tackle Surrey crime. “I’ve been a police officer for over 38 years,” the retired Surrey Mountie said. “The Conservatives don’t seem to be serious about tackling crime in Surrey. The Conservatives promised 100 additional RCMP officers after repeated calls from the NDP but they just aren’t delivering.” Only six of 94 have been deployed to date, he noted. “Residents of Fleetwood-Port Kells are demanding answers from the Conservatives and Ms. Grewal but it seems like they are more concerned about their reelection,” Begg charged. tom.zytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

VICTORIA — Surrey-Fleetwood Liberal MLA Peter Fassbender has a new cabinet job as minister responsible for Translink, as well as community, sport and cultural development. Premier Christy Clark announced her cabinet shuffle Thursday (July 30). Fassbender was the Minister of Education. That job has now been given to Mike Bernier, MLA for Peace River South.

Tolls on Port Mann to rise Aug. 15 Now staff Twitter @amyreid87

Port Mann Bridge tolls are set to rise on Aug. 15. For small vehicles – cars, pick-ups and SUVS – the toll will rise from $3 to $3.15. Rates will also be rising for mediumsized vehicles (cars with trailers, cube vans and motorhomes) from $6 to $6.30, large vehicles (commercial trucks, motobuses and large motor homes) from $9 to $9.45 and the toll for motorcycles will jump from $1.50 to $1.60. The raised rates are

needed to keep up with debt repayment and operational costs, said Irene Kerr, CEO of Transportation Investment Corporation (TI Corp), in a release. TI Corp says the new Port Mann Bridge has about 100,000 crossings a day, and the company reports that year-to-date traffic is five per cent higher than in 2014. Use of the bridge was down in 2014 after the toll was doubled, following a one-year introductory rate in January 2014. According to traffic figures, there were 34,300 fewer trips in 2014 than the roughly

RHYS DUCH VICTORIA, BC

1.26 million the year previous, following the full tolling rate being brought in. But for the last seven consecutive months, the bridge has seen an increase in traffic over the same months in 2014. For more information, visit Treo. ca/tolls.

‘Not dead yet’: Theatre group at a critical point Tom Zillich Now staff Twitter @tomzillich

NEWTON — A local theatre group says it must change or die, which makes the location of its annual general meeting so ironic. These are tough times for Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society (FVGSS), whose musical shows have entertained audiences in Surrey for three decades. Declining ticket sales and disappearing government funding have conspired to leave the group at a critical point in its history, and its financial wellbeing will be among topics at an AGM this Sunday, Aug. 16 – in the Arbor Room of Valley View Funeral Home in Newton. “We’re not dead yet” was the message posted on the FVGSS’s most recent newsletter, which urged those who care about the theatre group to attend its AGM to learn of “some new policies for our performance

schedule and help with our direction for the future.” Last week, FVGSS president Mike Balser and others built a “Jack and the Beanstalk”-themed float to roll during White Rock Sea Festival’s torchlight parade, held Sunday (Aug. 2). The work was part of an effort by the group to not only promote its annual panto show at Surrey Arts Centre this fall, but also be more involved in the community. “There was a period of growth for us, but over the past eight years or so, it’s shrunk a little bit,” said Balser, who teaches drama and music in Coquitlam, as he, Tim Tucker and Christine Alexander built the float in the FVGSS’ warehouse in Newton. In the 1990s, Balser said, the FVGSS’s annual panto would make close to $40,000 during its two-week run – enough to help finance the staging of the group’s annual spring show, which is usually an operetta of some note. “Now,” Balser said, “we are losing

the panto “Jack and the Beanstalk,” starting on Sunday, Aug. 30. Next spring, the group will stage “Anne of Green Gables” at White Rock’s Coast Capital Playhouse. A name change for the group isn’t out of the question, Balser said.

“This has been our name for a long time, so we don’t want to discount that,” he said. “But at the same time, there are more and more people asking us, ‘Why are you the Gilbert and Sullivan Society again? You’re doing ‘Anne of Green Gables,’ pantos half the year, other shows. So a name change is something we’d bring to the membership, not something we can do just as a board.” The group’s activities are posted on its website, Fvgssociety.wix.com/ fvgss, and at Facebook.com/FVGSS. “I think we’re a valuable (organization),” Balser said, “because we give kids, in particular, and adults, too, a chance to learn new things, be part of a team and work within a structure. You know, opening night is a non-negotiable date,” he added with a laugh. tom.zillich@thenownewspaper.com

GO! The arts

Beach House Theatre preps Wilde, Munsch plays for August dates helped us enormously by getting the word out to the broader public. Through their articles, we’ve been able to reach a wide audience in the Surrey area. We thank them.” Aw, gee. And we thank you, too, for leading the way in showing what

positive action can do to affect change. The next thank-you is from Beach House Theatre. This summer theatre event has had several successful seasons on a temporary stage at Blackie Spit, in Crescent Beach. Looking on their website, under sponsors, I found this thank-you: “The Now newspaper has helped us enormously by getting the word out to the broader public. Through their articles, we’ve been able to reach a wide audience in the Surrey area. We thank them.” This summer, Beach House Theatre – it’s actually not in a ‘house,’ but and tent – deviates from its usual Shakespeare production to an Oscar Wilde play, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” This period piece, about two clever, witty young men (aren’t they all witty when they are young?), is set in England in 1895. With no offence to Shakespeare, they say, the language is easily understood. And, well, some things, like true love, are timeless. The

show runs from Aug. 11 to 16. Check out Beachhousetheatre.org to purchase tickets. Be sure to read about the prologue events. Some evening shows will offer a 15-minute prologue with insights into the story, the production and the life of the infamous Mr. Wilde. The people at Beach House like to get young people interested in theatre. In August, the company also presents “Munsch Upon a Time,” based on stories by Robert Munsch. The run is short, from Aug. 12 to 15. It is the perfect way to spend a summer morning with your kids. Introduce them to the magic of live theatre. Inspire them with the energy, laughter, imagination and joy of these great stories, told in a spectacular location. For “Munsch Upon a Time,” tickets for most shows are still available, and the cost is less than $10. This just might be more magical and educational than a movie with minions or video game icons attacking the earth. melminty@telus.net

SURREY — I first played badminton as a wee tyke and, apart from a brief hiatus as a prototypical surly teenager, have continued to play it throughout my life. It’s a superb casual sport where one needn’t spend a lot of money (a decent racquet runs $50) or be ungodly big, tall or steroid-enhanced to become proficient and have a heckuva good time. One problem: If you don’t join an indoor league somewhere, you’re forced to set up your own court/net, and you’re usually also forced to play outside, where even a mild breeze will wreak havoc on the object of the game, the birdie. Enter “speedminton.” Born in Germany in 2002, speedminton is badminton shaken to its core, altered and warped and X-Games-ified to better suit the reality of today. In speedminton, there is no net. In its place are two 18-foot “squares,” marked on

the ground 42 inches apart from each other with tape or cones. Players score points by landing the “speeder” (a smaller, weightier, wind-resistant birdie variant) inside their opponent’s square. It’s a far more portable setup than badminton, and becomes even more so if participants opt to do away with a court and simply smack the speeder back and forth – on a beach, say, or a mountaintop. Or wherever. Talk about adaptable. The racquets are different, too. Forget the long handles and teeny tiny heads of their badminton counterparts. The speedminton ones are shorter and faster, with a massive sweet spot. But does it make for a better game? Certainly it doesn’t put such an emphasis on trickery; the dainty drop shots of badminton are not to be found here. But, as evidenced by the scores of folks who tried speedminton for the very first time at the recent South Surrey Community Festival, it’s a ton of fun nonetheless. On hand was Kim Matthews of M4 Ideas (Speedminton.ca), the Canadian distributor

of speedminton gear. Kim, along with other instructors, doled out the equipment, gave a quick five-minute tutorial and sent the players into battle.

Virtually everyone who jumped in grabbed the concept right away – one of the beauties of the sport. And then up stepped this humble reporter – the badminton player from way back. First shot went 20 feet over the head of the opponent. Within five minutes, though, we’d had a thrilling 16-shot rally and at least two distinct moments of glory. As Kim had forecast, adhering to the boundaries seemed secondary to keeping the speeder in the air. “Speedminton is exercise disguised as fun,” she said. “The bonus is that people of any age, any stage of physical literacy can play the game.” And as I trudged away to my next assignment, I looked back at the action, wishing I was still in the middle of it. ❚ The third World Speedminton Championship will take place from Aug. 28 to 30 in Berlin.

PLAY Golf

Junior players sizzle during Odlum Brown Classic at Northview SURREY — Some outstanding scores were recorded during the Odlum Brown Classic, a Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour event played at Northview’s two golf courses from July 27 to 29. The PGA of BC Junior Championship tournament saw

110 junior golfers compete for titles in six divisions. In the Girls division, it took eight under-par scores from Euna Han, 12, of Coquitlam, and 14-year-old Tiffany Kong, of Vancouver, to force a playoff that resulted in Kong being crowned

Junior Girls champ. In Junior Boys action, Connor McLellan, 19, of Chilliwack, took top spot, followed by Harry Bains, 17, of Surrey and Tyler Leclair, 18, of North Vancouver. Surrey’s Khan Lee, 15, triumphed as Juvenile Boys champ

after he fired 70-71-74 (215) for a 10-stroke victory over runnerup Andy Kim, 15, of Langley. “Everything was great,” said Lee. “My putting was better than before and my game plan was solid. I feel happy for winning my divisions by a lot of strokes and on

my home course.” Other division winners were West Van’s Julie (Youn Soo) Ju, 14, in the U15 Girls category, Richmond’s Brycen Ko, 11, in Peewee Boys and Vernon’s Braeden Cooper, 14, in Bantam Boys.
