Gardeners encouraged to showcase their treasures Red Deer & District Garden Club is hosting the annual flower show next week

ocal gardeners may face a relatively short growing season, but members of the Red Deer & District Garden Club work to make the very most of it. They do that through regular meetings – all year long – as well as special events like the upcoming annual Flower & Garden Show which runs Aug. 20th at Festival Hall.

It’s free to both exhibit and to attend, with staging of exhibits on Aug. 19th from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and Aug. 20th from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Viewing times are from 2 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 20th.

There is also a garden tea party which runs from 2 to 4 p.m. with a cost of $5.

Folks don’t have to be Garden Club members to enter the show, explained Clarice Schulz, the event’s convener. Entry tags are available from her by calling 403341-4351.

Local growers also shouldn’t be shy about entering the show – sometimes folks can find treasures in their own yards that deserve to be a part of the popular annual event, she said.

Typically, organizers expect between 400 to 600 entries.

For locals with a green thumb, both educational and social opportunities abound via the Red Deer & District Garden Club.

The Club, whose origins stretch back to the early years of the last century, is still going strong.

Founded during the spring of 1911, the Club was originally known as the Red Deer Horticultural Society. Today, the Red Deer & District Garden Club is a non-profit organization and is a member of the Alberta Horticultural Association. Their intent is to foster an interest in all types of gardening and provide a forum for gardeners to get together and celebrate the love of gardening.

For the coming show, Club volunteer Bev Swanson describes it a friendly competition. Local businesses and some Club members have also donated prizes, she added. “There are cash prizes and gift certificates to be won from local businesses.

“Anyone can enter as well – we welcome everyone. You don’t have to be a Red Deer & District Garden Club member to enter.

There are also over 240 classes to enter as well.

“I think the average would be about 200 to 300 in terms of who comes to see it.”

As for show judges, they are certified by the Alberta Horticultural Association.

Again, both women emphasize that local gardeners shouldn’t be intimidated about entering the show. “One lady – a dear

Meanwhile, members meet at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre on the third Thursday of every month, starting at 7 p.m. with the exception of July, August and December.

Anyone who is interested in any facet of gardening is welcome to pop in. Memberships cost $20 for the year, and some of the meetings feature guest speakers on an array of topics.

Over the summer, members also go on tours around the area to explore a variety of gardens.

The gardens don’t necessarily have to belong to Club members – anyone who wants members to come and see their gar-

dens is welcome and encouraged to extend an invitation. They’ve even had people contact them who don’t have a garden as of yet, but would like to hear from Club members about how to get started and map out an attractive mix of flowers and plants.

And things don’t come to a grinding halt during the colder months. Members meet all year to share tips, stories and they continue to enjoy special speakers and sessions to hone their skills.

As for the Club’s members, the joys of gardening are both plentiful and personally fulfilling. Simply being outside on a beautiful day and designing which flowers and plants go where is endlessly fascinating.

“I grew up with it. My mom always had beautiful flowers on the south side of our

house, and we always had a big garden,” recalled Schulz. “I always loved working in the yard.”

Ultimately, members point out that if you have a house with a garden, a townhouse with a small courtyard, or an apartment with a planter, you can garden.

Schulz points out that there seems to be a resurgence of interest in gardening as well, what with more and more community gardens popping up throughout the area, too, for example. “It’s nice to watch things grow.”

Memberships for the Club are available for a nominal fee, and newsletters are sent out each month with the exceptions of July, August and December.

Pride Week kicks off in Red Deer on Friday

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Pride Week begins in Red Deer this Friday with a number of events scheduled throughout the weekend.

This year’s events aim to address some of those challenges, including the adversity gay senior citizens experience, particularly after retirement and in retirement communities.

“Lots of LGBTQ people will come out in their middle years only to have to go back into the closet when they enter a retirement home,” said Tony Jeglum, Central Alberta Pride community board member.

“There’s not that experience and openness in many retirement communities.

“It’s something we are seeing a lot of movement on but it’s also something we didn’t address a couple of years ago but we are starting to see the issue become more forefront.”

Jeglum said he and the board were thrilled to have the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre joining in for this year’s Pride activi-

ties. The Golden Circle will be hosting a Rainbow Tea on Aug. 18th from 1:30-3:30 p.m. with tea, snacks, and a performance by The Laddies of La Cage.

“I never thought I would live to see the day drag queens would perform at the Golden Circle at three in the afternoon on a Tuesday, but thanks to the Executive Director at the Golden Circle, Monica Morrison, they’ve asked to join us and we welcomed them with open arms.”

While senior citizens still struggle to gain acceptance from their peers, Jeglum said the opposite seems to be true of the younger generation.

“One of the best things about the last 40 years and the advancements the LGBTQ community have made is that people are becoming more comfortable with the idea of coming out and with accepting their sexuality at much younger ages,” explained Jeglum.

“Once upon a time a teenage may have known he or she was gay, but they didn’t act on it - they would never tell their parents or God

forbid the other kids.

“But now it’s not uncommon for teenagers to identify as gay at an early age and to actually be quite vocal about it.”

Another place Jeglum said the battle for equality has not yet been won is in rural outlying communities, adding it is easy to live in Red Deer without anyone bothering you for the way you live your life.

“In small town rural Alberta, outside of the cities – there is still a rhetoric around the LGBTQ idea and people seem to forget that gay people are just normal people going about their daily lives.”

Jeglum also added the trans community has not received the same acceptance and equality over the last 40 years, however in the wake of international media coverage of various transgender individuals, great strides are being made for the transgender community’s journey to societal acceptance.

OPINION Campaigns continue to gather momentum The October election day may be many weeks away, but several local people have already tossed their hats into the ring to land a post in Ottawa.

These include to date for Red Deer – Mountain View incumbent Earl Dreeshen (PC), City Councillor Paul Harris (NDP), school trustee Dianne Macaulay (NDP), Evan Bedford (NDP), James Walper (Libertarian) and Mason Sisson (Greens).

For the Red Deer – Lacombe riding, the incumbent is Conservative Blaine Calkins, Jeff Rock (Liberals), Doug Hart (NDP) and Katherine Swampy (NDP).

Canadians will go to the polls on Oct. 19th.

Meanwhile, it’s difficult to tell following last week’s forum who is really at the forefront so far. It depends which media source you turn true. As far as Alberta goes, it’s been fairly quiet – with the focus seemingly on other parts of the country.

There is a steady stream of campaign stops by the Prime Minister in Ontario so far, but of course he will make his way out

west as election day nears.

In past elections, the Conservatives have tended not to worry too much about Alberta and putting in appearances, but with the recent provincial election showing a sweeping change across the political landscape, we can only assume they won’t be taking the province for granted so much anymore.

We will likely see more of NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau out this way, as they probably see more hope for a breakthrough with voters this time around.

In total, the candidates have 11 weeks to spread their messages across the country – an unusually lengthy period of time, considering most campaigns run about 37 days or so.

There has been some outrage amongst the public over the early election call - everything from the soaring costs of calling the election early to an attitude of ‘what’s the point’ of calling it in the middle of summer and on a long weekend to boot.

However, we’ve noticed that there does seem to be growing interest and conversation happening in the community even in the so-called ‘dog days’ of summer. This is particularly the case with social media, where everyone can be a commentator at any moment. Opinions and comments flow freely – which can be a great way to launch discussion and debate.

Obviously, people are engaging and are looking for something of a change. Gone are the days when political leaders could almost predict which way a given province would go.

But there are still frustrations over what this campaign will ultimately cost Canadians.

According to CBC, during a 37-day election period, each party can spend a maximum of $25 million. For each additional day, that means an extra $675,000 can be spent which would see parties able to spend more than $50 million.

The cost to taxpayers rises with a longer campaign as well. It has been reported that

a typical five-week campaign costs about $375 million. Parties are then reimbursed for half the money they shell out during the course of the campaign – which falls on taxpayers.

It’s certainly unusual for campaigns to be this long - according to The Canadian Press, only Canada’s first two election campaigns were longer. The 1867 campaign lasted 81 days, while the 1872 campaign went for 96 days. At that time, voting was staggered over the country for a period of several months. The longest race in recent history was a 74-day campaign back in 1926.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see, in our ridings, how things play out. It is a big change for our area with the development of two new ridings – Red Deerians will ultimately be led by two MPs and sharing that particular MP with sizable rural ridings.

Balancing the needs of both will no doubt be challenging for whoever lands the posts this fall.

The hard realities of looking older than you are I remember the year after I graduated from high school, how I would visit friends that still attended there from time to time. If I had a day off from work, I would dash over and join them for lunch. This actually went on for a couple of years, and I remember thinking it was pretty cool how I could be nearing 19 or so and still fitting in with a bunch of high school students. Fast-forward a couple of years. I was living in Burnaby, B.C. and one day, I thought I’d do something for my health and pick up some vitamins at the mall.

The sales lady agreed that would be a great idea, assuming I was in my ‘late 20s’. I was barely 20.

Gone were the days of fooling anybody about my age, apparently. High school kids would now think I was the dreaded

WEBER substitute teacher, or even worse, maybe one of the parents. Groan.

Much of this, I believed, had to do with my rapidly receding hairline.

What to do? By this point, I was again living in Red Deer and thought I would check out one of those places that sell hairpieces – the expensive kind they glue onto your head and you have to have readjusted every few weeks. I remember feeling an unnerving mix of embarrassment and excitement as I saw my head

covered in brown, wavy locks like I had when I was in high school.

The years melted away.

But the thought of having something glued to my scalp didn’t sit well, so I promptly abandoned the idea. Baldness was my destiny, and I would simply accept it and move forward.

But I had to accept also that I looked older for my age. I went to SAIT in Calgary to study journalism when I was 26, and I recall one of the younger students - she was probably around 18 – saying how she admired me coming back to school ‘at my age’. At my age? What did she think, that I was in my mid-50s?

Cue the insecurities – already raging at this point in my life.

Fast-forward to about three years ago.

I was about 43 and shop-

ping at a bookstore in Lacombe. The clerk asked me if I was eligible for the ‘seniors’ discount’. I could hardly believe my ears.

There is no experience quite like being hit with the hard truth about what others perceive about you – when it’s not to your liking.

It’s happened more times since then. A waitress here in the City has assumed twice that I am a senior.

The second time I told her I wasn’t, but she said she would give me the senior’s discount anyhow. Maybe she thinks I’m in denial?

And then just last Sunday, another waiter didn’t even bother to ask. He just gave me the senior’s discount on the bill.

That’s when I decided to adopt a new attitude toward this – if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. It was nice getting the brunch for a few

dollars less, after all.

The bottom line is, the passage of time is of course unstoppable. Life courses by at what seems like a faster pace then it used to.

And I’m okay with that. Really, we all have to be. At 46, I have found I must accept certain things about my life – when you are in your 20s and even in your 30s, you feel like there is all kinds of time left to do all kinds of things.

But now, I find life seems to offer fewer choices – not poorer choices necessarily, but different choices.

And the irony is, interestingly enough, I wouldn’t go back to my younger days even if I could.

Age brings with it some special gifts, like perspective, a dash of wisdom, a stronger sense of confidence, an increased sense of being ‘okay’ with who

you are and less of a craving to be accepted by everybody. That used to plague me as a younger man. I wanted everyone to approve of me, to like me.

Even people that honestly, I didn’t even really like. But now, that peculiar ‘need’ has been left behind.

So society, bring on the offers of seniors’ discounts – I have made peace with the fact I look older than I am.

It sure makes those pricey Sunday brunches more affordable. I will eat my pancakes in peace – older, but a bit wiser, a little less self-conscious and hopefully with an eye to how I can help impact others in a positive way. Life needs to become more about others than it is about me – and perhaps that’s the most liberating lesson we can learn as the years pass. editor@reddeerexpress.com

COURT BRIEFS ACCUSED IMPAIRED DRIVER IN COURT A 25-year-old Red Deer man, who faces a number of charges after refusing to provide a breath sample to RCMP following a serious collision with a cyclist in the early morning hours of July 4th, made his first appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court earlier this month.

Eric William Petty has been charged with refusing a breath demand, dangerous operation and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

At 3 a.m., Red Deer RCMP were called to the intersection of 32nd St. and Mitchell Ave. in response to a report of a serious collision between a vehicle and a cyclist. Several passersby provided first aid assistance to the 17-year-old male victim until EMS arrived on the scene.

The victim was taken to Red Deer Hospital in critical condition and was airlifted by STARS to Edmonton shortly afterward.

Petty is expected to make his second appearance in Red Deer court on Aug. 12th.

ALLEGED IMPAIRED CASE HELD OVER Chad Ryan Connatty, 30, faces numerous charges after a collision on May 20th in Red Deer that resulted in the death of a 44-yearold Springbrook man.

He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle while driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, blood alcohol exceeding .08 and driving while disqualified.

He has also been charged with possession of marijuana.

Connatty is currently also before the courts on two other matters.

Red Deer RCMP responded to a collision between a Ford 150 and a motorcycle May 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 19th St. and 30th Ave. Witnesses attempted to administer CPR to the driver of the motorcycle until Red Deer EMS and firefighters arrived. EMS staff worked hard to save the victim, a 44-year-old Springbrook man.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The collision occurred when the truck, which was driving northbound on 30th Ave., attempted to turn left onto 19th St. and collided with the motorcycle, which was driving south on 30th Ave. The victim was wearing a helmet.

An RCMP collision analyst attended and the intersection was blocked off for almost three hours while RCMP conducted their investigation.

Connatty was arrested at the scene for impaired driving causing death and was taken into custody.

He will make another court appearance on Aug. 26th.

On April 3rd Calgary Federal Serious Organized Crime officers completed a 10-month investigation of a human trafficking case,

which resulted in investigators charging two individuals under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. This investigation began in June 2014, when Alberta Employment Standards contacted RCMP which led to a joint-investigation into the alleged abuse of eight temporary foreign workers employed at Econolodge - Gasoline Alley of Red Deer, Alberta.

The pair will return to Red Deer Provincial court Aug. 31st.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING CASE IN COURT The case of two charged with human trafficking in Red Deer has been held over in Red Deer Provincial Court.

Varinder Sidhu, 49, and Ravinder Sidhu, 46, both from Red Deer, have been charged with organizing the coming into Canada of one or more persons by means of abduction, fraud, deception or use or threat of force or coercion, employing a foreign national in a capacity in which the foreign national is not

CITY BRIEFS NEW TRANSIT FARE SYSTEM Red Deerians will now see new fareboxes in the Bolt and all Red Deer Transit buses. Starting this past Monday, the new technology allows for more accurate readings of cash and pass payments, which will roll out in two stages.

“Initially, the fareboxes will only be used for cash payments and printing and receiving of transfer tickets,” said Steve Parkin, transit operations superintendent.

“Within the next couple of months, we will replace the current passes and tickets with reloadable Transit cards.”

Riders who have 12 single ride tickets are still able to use them, although they will no longer be for sale as of Aug. 31st. The current tickets must be handed to the operator as the new fareboxes do not accept them.

The fareboxes accept Canadian money only and require exact change as there is no cash back, which is the same as the current system.

Transit users will have to ask for their transfer tickets when paying as the transfers are printed at that time.

“We are looking forward to the new technology being used in our buses. We understand that it’ll be an adjustment for our riders, but it will streamline the process of using our services,” said Parkin. “With our growing population, our ridership is increasing annually and this system will enable us to continue meeting the needs

of our customers and citizens who use transit to get around the city.”

Another benefit to the new system is the ability to collect information on usage of bus stops and routes. This data will be used for future planning of Transit services.

COMMERCIAL PERMITS LEAD SECTORS IN JULY Commercial building permits were strong in July, valued at $6.4 million last month and $21.8 million year to date, more than double the value of commercial permits this time last year.

Commercial permits led the way among all sectors due in part to a permit valued at $4.2 million for a renovation and addition to Saputo, issued to Timcon Construction (1988) Ltd. Kor-Alta was issued a permit valued at $1.4 million for a commercial building at 6 Clearview Market Way. Although total permit values were down in July compared to July 2014, total values for January to July of this year sit at $145 million compared to $99 million for the same period last year.

RDC’S SUMMERSCAPES SUMMER SCHOOL Summer camp creativity continues at Red Deer College, with visual art students from across the province participating in SummerScapes. This unique visual arts program runs to Aug. 15th.

Swampy seeks NDP nomination

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express A candidate from Maskwacis has announced she is seeking the nomination to be the federal candidate for the Red Deer – Lacombe Riding. Katherine Swampy, who was born and raised in the area of Maskwacis, is employed as a tax officer with Revenue Canada following her recent graduation from the University of Alberta. She said she joined the NDP in 2011 as it was the party that best aligned with her own beliefs and values.

“They believe in childcare, a fair wage, as well as ensuring and investing in our future to make sure there is something there for future generations, as well as the need for upgrading old infrastructure and creating new infrastructure - the list goes on.”

No stranger to the local political landscape, Swampy ran as the NDP candidate for the area of Drayton Valley – Devon, where Mark Smith of the Wildrose Party was elected MLA in the provincial election this past spring.

Swampy said she has seen NDP support growing in Maskwacis, as the environment and education become increasingly important issues in the community. “Bill C-51 - I also

want to work to help repeal that bill,” said Swampy in regards to the Conservatives party’s ‘Anti Terrorism’ legislation introduced near the end of January.

Also on Swampy’s list is Bill C - 45 or the ‘omnibus bill’ in which legislation passed amended the Canadian Criminal Code to establish new legal duties for workplace health and safety. The bill received criticism for having loosened protections in the Navigable Waters Protection Act, and also having weakened the Canada Labour Code and altering the Indian Act. “I want to fight for all of the lakes, water and wetlands we have lost – I want to fight to get protection back and help the development of a more sustainable system,” explained Swampy. “Being a mother also means education is a huge factor for me. I want to ensure their future and ensure Canada is a better place for them to live.

“With NDP there is a huge shift – it used to have an older vision, but now it seems it’s more about the youth of our country,” she said. “As this generation gets a little older, it seems politics are becoming a more appealing idea, and it seems the NDP are who appeals to them the most.” jswan@reddeerexpress.com

POLICE BRIEFS SUSPECTS SOUGHT IN HOME INVASION RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify two suspects in a home invasion that occurred earlier this month at a townhouse in the Westpark neighbourhood.

MAN ARRESTED IN STOLEN VEHICLE SUSPECT 1

SUSPECT 2 At 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 1st, RCMP responded to a report of two men who had forced their way inside a townhouse residence on 55th Ave., one carrying a long barrel gun and the other carrying a handgun. The long barrel gun was discharged, and the occupant of the residence ran from the building and called for help. The suspects fled, possibly driving an older red two-door coupe.

At this time, RCMP do not believe this was occurrence.

RCMP have one man in custody after the driver of a stolen truck attempted to evade police, first by driving away after hitting a tire deflation device and then by trying to flee on foot.

The incident began shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 5th when members of the Community Response Unit located two men in a stolen red Dodge Ram truck downtown.

The truck travelled north on Taylor Drive where officers had set up to conduct a roadside stop at the intersection of Taylor Drive and Howarth Street. The truck refused to stop, driving over a tire deflation device and continuing north on deflated tires before coming to a stop in the Taylor Plaza parking lot.

At that point, the driver and passenger ran from the vehicle. The driver was caught by RCMP. The male passenger was not located.

Daniel Wayne Harrick, 26, of Red Deer has been charged with possession of

RCMP LOOK FOR ELECTRONICS THIEVES RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify two men who stole more than $3,000 worth of electronics from The Source electronics store on July 22nd around 8 p.m. The two made off with approximately 16 Mophie Juice Packs (rechargeable external battery cases) in various colours for various iPhone models and several SanDisk Micro SD cards.

Suspect number one is described as a black male with a slim build. He was wearing square-rimmed glasses, a grey hoodie with an orange Ralph Lauren logo, black pants, black and grey shoes and a grey and blue hat.

SUSPECTED THIEVES

ALLEGED KIDNAPPING IN CITY Red Deer RCMP are looking for witnesses to an alleged kidnapping and assault that took place in the early hours of July 25th.

At 2:10 a.m. on July 25th, RCMP received a report that a man had been taken as he walked down the alley behind his Eastview residence, assaulted and then dropped off at another location in Red Deer. Police were contacted, and located the victim a short time later in the Morrisroe neighbourhood.

As the victim walked, a truck pulled up and stopped; the male driver and two male passengers got out and threw the victim into the box of the truck before driving away. A short distance later, they stopped the truck, pulled the victim out and assaulted him before driving away and leaving him in an alley in Morrisroe. The victim suffered scrapes and bruises; he was not robbed, and he didn’t know his attackers.

The driver of the truck is described as a Caucasian male, about 5’10” tall, with dark hair and wearing a black jacket. The first passenger is described as about 5’8” tall with blonde hair, wearing red shoes with white laces.

The second passenger is described as wearing a grey hoodie with a zipper, with the hood up.

The truck is described as a newer red Dodge Ram pickup truck crew cab (possibly 2500) with dark rims, a cover on the box, steps on each side, extended side mirrors with yellow lights on them and tinted taillights.

Councillor Paul Harris seeks federal NDP nomination

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Red Deer City Councillor Paul Harris is seeking the NDP nomination in the Red Deer – Mountain View riding for this coming fall’s federal election.

Harris, who has served on City council for five years, said he has been asked by people in the community as well as those in the federal and provincial government, to make the move.

“I decided that now would be the opportunity.

If it’s not now, then it would be four years from now and I’m thinking about my career and if I should do that.

“This riding, I think, needs a really strong voice.

We have some great things happening here. Out of the three candidates I have the most experience municipally. I have been working with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for five years now and I have been on Parliament Hill working with the MPs developing policies and doing that kind of strategic thinking for Canada already. I am familiar with that work,” he said. “I also think that my experience municipally is important because most people live in municipalities – this does not negate people who live in the rural areas, they are still part of municipalities, they just have different needs.”

During a special meeting held yesterday, Red Deer City council granted Harris a leave of absence from his position of councillor until Aug. 24th, which is the NDP nomination date for the Red Deer-Mountain View riding. If Harris is successful in securing the nomination, that leave of

absence will be extended through until Oct. 19th – which is election day.

Harris said his experience on City council will lend itself to the role of MP should he be elected.

“One of the most important things with my experience on council is that you are working with a number of different people with diverse opinions. We’ve got nine different people, so you might as well have nine different parties. You have to work together – you have to collaborate and you have to think through things in a bigger context,” he said. “I think that is what is missing in federal politics right now – there is too much party thinking and not enough collaboration.”

Harris said if he is successful in securing the nomination for the NDPs, he will focus on infrastructure needs in Central Alberta.

“I want to focus on social infrastructure particularly. We need to make our airport succeed – we have the Canada Winter Games coming up. Of course there are roads, bridges and sewers and all of that – we can’t forget the basics,” he said.

“The wisdom of the community is the most important and everybody’s voice needs to be heard. I will be very open to those kinds of things.”

As for issues he has heard so far from constituents, there is a variety.

“Probably what I am hearing concerns about the most are the environment, what is happening with healthcare and how can constituents can be heard.

There is a lot of frustration with the current government not listening to the citizens of Canada,” he said.

Another issue Harris would like to address includes the Alberta economy.

“Alberta has been one of the economies that has driven this country. We are going through some tough times right now, so how can we diversify the economy and still maintain our position as a province that is great to be in?” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Blood donations needed as summer winds down Officials say the national inventory has declined over the last couple of months The national blood inventory has steadily declined this summer and needs a boost to continue to meet the needs of patients through the coming weeks. Canadian Blood Services is asking people to give blood as summer continues to wind down.

“Summer is a challenging time for blood collection, when many regular donors are on vacation - this is great time for new donors to join us and help prevent a further decline in the national inventory,” said Mark Donnison, vice president of donor relations. “Platelets derived from blood are critical to help stop bleeding and unfortunately expire just five days after a blood donation.”

The Canada Safety Council reports that, “More fatalities occur on Canadian roads during summer months than any other time of year.” It can take up to 50 donors to help save someone who has been in a motor vehicle accident.

Red Deer area patients need donors’ help. Officials are asking that Red Deerians consider helping maintain the needed inventory by donating at local clinics.

According to the Canadian Blood Services’ web site, to become a blood donor in Canada you must be in good general health, feeling well and able to perform your normal activities, you also must be at least 17-years-old and meet height and weight requirements if you are between 17- and 23-years-old.

Northey Family to receive the Golden Furrow Award On Saturday, Aug. 15th at 10:30 a.m. at the Sunnybrook Farm Museum, the Northey family of Red Deer will be receiving the Golden Furrow Award, which honours them as the Pioneer Farm Family of the Year.

The patriarch of the family, Jonathan Northey, was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, but was raised in Iowa.

His wife, Mary Ellen Higgs, was born in Indiana and was the daughter of a Welsh sea captain. Jonathan and Mary Ellen were married in October of 1871 in Iowa City. They had eight children – five boys and three girls.

In 1898, Jonathan purchased a section of land in the Balmoral district for $3 an acre. The family moved up to their new home in 1902. They arrived in Red Deer in December, when the temperatures were a bracing 40 below.

The work on the new farm was hard – lots of land needed to be cleared and broken.

However, Jonathan was an excellent farmer and

continuing to run the farm east of Red Deer. Jonathan passed away of heart failure in 1913. Mary Ellen passed away in December of 1922.

One of the sons, Byron and his wife Gertrude (Gertie) established their own farm in Balmoral and this was their home for 45 years.

That farm was later taken over by their son Louis (Lou) and his wife Evelyn.

Chester (Chet), another son, worked the original family farm, but also acquired land of his own.

His wife, Edna Piper, was a member of the famous Piper family, who operated Red Deer’s first brickyard and also farmed east of Red Deer.

Chet and Edna established one of the first Guernsey cattle herds in Alberta. They later raised registered Yorkshire hogs.

Chet and Edna’s farm was later taken over by their son Vernon.

Vern and his wife Doris Bennett, of the Knee Hill Valley district east of Innisfail, raised a family of seven on the original

DAWE soon built up a first-class grain farm. His accounts of getting his farm established were quoted in the Board of Trade promotional brochures, which were used to help lure more settlers to the Red Deer area.

Jonathan was soon able to purchase more land.

One piece was in the Springvale district, southeast of Red Deer. Another piece was on the southwest end of Sylvan Lake. The lakeshore parcel became known as Northey’s Point, when it was subdivided in 1911.

The first part of the Northey name was used when the Summer Village of Norglenwold was established 50 years ago in 1965.

In 1912, as his health was beginning to falter, Jonathan bought land in California, with his sons

Northey farm. In addition to farming, Vern worked as an electrician, while Doris taught school at River Glen, before becoming the first director of the Red Deer and District Museum.

A third son of Jonathan and Mary Ellen, Walter, worked as a school teacher for a while, before acquiring a farm near Olds.

He married Ruby Johnston of the pioneer Johnston family of Markerville.

Near the end of the First World War, Walter and Ruby acquired a farm in the Waskasoo district south of Red Deer. Like the other members of the Northey family, they were excellent farmers and were soon able to acquire additional land.

Their sons Howard and Allan later took over the farm and established an excellent dairy operation with Holstein cows.

Allan moved to West Park in 1968, while Howard, his wife Betty and family, continued to live in the Waskasoo district for many years.

More than 13,000 registered participants migrated to Canyon Ski Resort over the weekend for the annual Mud Hero event.

The 6km obstacle/mud course created on the slopes of Canyon saw participants scaling massive walls, swimming through mud holes - all under the blazing heat Central Alberta saw this past weekend.

The annual Mud Hero run features 18 obstacles in total and is hosted by Crazy Canucks – a Canadian-owned and operated event marketing, promotions and operations company with their main product being the Mud Hero 6km obstacle challenge.

The event operates across the country with Red Deer’s race being the only Mud Hero race in all of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Other race locations include Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax.

Mud Hero encourages participants to run in support of one of their official charities or an organization important to the runner and collect pledges from friends and family.

Official charities for the event are listed as the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute, Cancercare Manitoba Foundation, Foundation Quebecoise Du Cancer, and Camp Oochigeas.

In 2014 Mud Hero raised a total of $161,355 for charity.

Local families to benefit from Cash and Cars Lottery The Cash and Cars Lottery and You Win 50 creates more moments for Albertans and their families facing cancer. The lottery enables the Alberta Cancer Foundation to invest in world-class research and care in all 17 cancer centres in the province.

The 16th anniversary of Cash and Cars Lottery launched publicly and is offering 3,002 prizes worth more than $4.7 million.

The lottery features three grand prizes, including two custom-built show homes each with cash and a luxury vehicle.

One home is located in Calgary and the other is in Edmonton. The third grand prize is $500,000 cash.

ENTERTAINMENT Accomplished duo to feature latest CD on City stop

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Few husband and wife duos meld their musical talents quite as well as Saskatoon-based John Antoniuk and Jen Lane. They perform Aug. 17th at Fratters.

Antoniuk comes from the indie/roots side of life and Lane has a bit more country/folk in her repertoire.

They have performed many times on a national stage showcasing at Breakout West, Canadian Music Week and Prairie Scene, and achieved International recognition at Folk Alliance in Kansas City, South by Southwest in Austin, Texas and through SaskMusic’s Export Showcase in Los Angeles.

The couple has always kept their projects separate, with Antoniuk working on Smokekiller and the recent more rootsy Always With You and Lane taking three of four releases to nominations for Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

The CD Jen & John, released in August of last year, is a co-production effort by Antoniuk and Lane and features new songs written by Antoniuk, two new songs written by Lane and a couple covers for a treat. Oh My Sweet Carolina by Ryan Adams was the first song the couple sang together when they met and began jamming.

“It’s been an amazing year,” explains Antoniuk during a recent chat of the time since the CD’s release. “The adventure began last August – we went out west and had a really nice swing through – the audiences were also really receptive to the album. It was something they’d been asking us to do for awhile.”

Then last fall, the couple also headed to Kelowna to record a new solo project for Lane which is set for release early next year. “It’s super organic and was a really beautiful experience,” he says of the recording process.

As for the release date, that may be quite a ways from now, but it’s a purposeful move.

“One thing I’ve learned in this business is that an unreleased record is really gold in your hands,” he explained.

“When you put it out, the first thing people say is, ‘Wow, this is great – what’s next?’ And you are like, what do mean what’s next? I just spent the last 18 months of my life making this for you,” he laughed. A better way to go is to build up the momentum prior to a CD’s release via video, promotion and radio.

Plus, it gives the couple more time to focus on the Jen & John project.

After recording wrapped up on Lane’s CD, they toured eastern Canada for awhile and did a residency at The Cameron House in Toronto as well. Currently they are back on the road and loving it – they are also grateful to Creative Saskatchewan for funding the tour and making it possible, he said.

The couple first met in 2002 and at the time, were both busy solo performers on the Saskatoon music circuit. It was during their attendance at one of their many showcases that the industry began to buzz with the idea of a collaboration between the two. They played a singer/

songwriter showcase in November of 2002, and that was the first time they met onstage.

“Then it was in about March of 2003 that we thought we should get together, jam and sing a little bit together too,” said Antoniuk.

One of the first tunes they tackled together was Oh My Sweet Carolina by the aforementioned Adams, and that really started it all between the two. “We realized that we enjoyed singing together, and we sounded good together as well.” Besides the professional collaborations, a personal connection was flourishing as well. They started dating shortly thereafter.

“We’ve been together for 11 years now, and married for seven.”

As for John & Jen, things kick off on a charming, laidback note with Give It All Away which sets the stage nicely for the personal, plaintive tones of Lost, featuring Lane’s sweet vocals opening the tune and later joined by Antoniuk.

Having a Good Time continues to show just how well these artists complement each other as does End of the World.

The project was produced by Lane and Antoniuk and recorded at The Recording House in Saskatoon.

For Antoniuk, following the path of a musician didn’t come that early on. He injured his knee playing football in

high school so that dream was sidelined.

But he soon picked up a guitar and something was sparked inside. He also started writing songs soon after that were inspired by artists like Dinosaur Jr. “The guitar playing was really exciting to me. I also followed that vein along to Bob Dylan and the guys with more unique voices.

It was the 1990s, so Nirvana and Pearl Jam were also huge influences on the first stage of my career, too.” This fall, he’s hitting the studio himself for a new solo CD to be released next year under the Smokekiller banner as well.

These days, the couple works hard to manage the demands of recording and touring while of course protecting their personal lives.

“We just focus on making sure that each of us maintains our whole self. I work at being the best John Antoniuk that I can be, and Jen works at being the best Jen Lane that she can be,” he explained. “If I focus on those things, the residual stuff is what we get to enjoy. I think I’m her biggest fan, and she’s probably mine. We are just excited to be able to work together in this capacity and spend time together outside of it all.

Saskatoon band hits City in support of CD

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Saskatoon-based band The Pistolwhips are hitting the road in support of their latest disc On Your Side, with a Red Deer show slated for Aug. 18th at Bo’s Bar and Grill with The Capones.

The guys first joined forces in the fall of 2012. And over the past few months, they’ve seen 28 Canadian cities from Tofino, B.C. to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

They plan to continue their momentum with another western tour in August heading from Winnipeg to Vancouver with a stop headlining the Golden Sound Festival in Golden, B.C. The quartet is comprised of frontman Rylan Schultz, guitarist Paul Kuzbik, bassist Zach Davies and drummer Tallus Scott.

The Pistolwhips combine upbeat indie rock tunes with old school blues licks and a dose of psychedelia to create a sound that is dynamic and captivating. The guys released a four-song EP in late 2012 that was very well-received in their home province.

After winning the RAWLCO 10K20 Award from Saskatoon rock station Rock 102FM, they set out to make their debut LP. The Pistolwhips released On Your Side in July of 2014 which was recorded by Ryan Andersen (AC/DC, Sarah McLachlan) in Saskatoon. Once again, the CD was very well received and was named Best Album of 2014 by Planet S Readers in Saskatoon.

And just a couple of months following the CD’s release, they found themselves

jetting off to London, England for a string of shows as part of an overall showcase of Saskatchewan artists. “It was at a time when the album was picking up some steam,” explained Davies. “We were there for 10 days – we did three showcases and literally three meetings a day.” There was also an enthusiastic response to their music.

“We had a lot of positive feedback at all of the shows – two were full-band rock shows and one was an acoustic performance – and all three of them went really well.”

Schultz agreed. “We definitely went there with the intention of making connections to go back,” he said. “Right now, we are taking time to work on our second album. So we’re going to take the next few months to really focus on that.” Once that’s a wrap, the guys are eager to plan a more extensive tour of the U.K. and Germany.

“The thing is that if you make it big in the U.K., that translates over to Canada as well. It’s a little harder to make it big in Canada and then bring that over to the U.K. So those are two positive things about keeping up our relationships with our contacts over there.”

For Davies, a passion for music was sparked early on. “My dad was a guitar player, so as early as I can remember, he used to put a pillow on my lap and a guitar on top of it and crank some Bob Marley or Zeppelin. So I started then.” Taking band classes throughout his school years followed, and he started playing bass in a

band by the time he was 12.

“For me, I would say the Chili Peppers were a pretty big influence on my playing style,” he said, adding he also eventually played in a Chili Peppers tribute band. “I also listened to a lot of Blind Melon, a lot of Nirvana for sure when I was younger.

Zeppelin, Allman Brothers – all kinds of stuff.”

Schultz also noted music was just a part of his growing up years. He was well on his way honing his guitar skills in his early teens. “I kept on teaching myself, and would play acoustic shows when I was 17 through about 19 years old. I also started playing in different bands, from rock to hip hop bands – everything under the sun.

“I grew up with a really eclectic range of music – I listened to lots of hip hop, also acoustic and folk music and some really heavy stuff, too. So definitely my range of influences is also pretty eclectic.”

The guys are excited about continuing to showcase their music here at home. Of course, being a musician isn’t all glamour and fun. It takes a steely commitment.

There’s the lengthy stretches of travel, the business aspects to attend to, the market-

ing and the organizing. “But when we are on stage, that’s what we are doing it for – when the crowd is responding well and we’re having a good time on stage. That’s the pay-off – that’s what keeps me going.”

Schultz agreed. “Definitely seeing that crowd response – getting up and being able to play, do our craft and having people enjoy it. That’s the thing that keeps us going – having great shows like that. Plus, we are all lovers of music, so having those writing sessions - I love hanging out with the guys, having some drinks and writing new tunes. We only have the two recordings out so far, so we have a lot of potential – a lot of places we can go sonically and a lot of different things we can try out. There’s limitless potential as far as where the band can go.”

Meanwhile, the guys are certainly enjoying the ride.

Lakeside symphony concert with a jazz theme Jazz fans and music lovers will be treated to an unprecedented event this summer at Red Deer Symphony Orchestra’s Evening of Jazz at the Lake, which will be held on Aug. 15th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Centennial Park in Sylvan Lake.

The event is intended to be a fundraising concert, produced by the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra (RDSO), and it will feature world-class jazz artists including Dan Brubeck Trio, Eric Allison and Cheryl Fisher. “An event of this nature and calibre has never been done in Central Alberta before,” said Chandra Kastern, executive director with RDSO. “The programming and content of the performance is a fresh and welcome challenge for the musicians, all of whom are excited to be performing with guest artists that are renowned jazz musicians.”

While RDSO has done a limited number of educational performances outside of Red Deer, it has never put on a full concert

outside of the City and has not performed at Sylvan Lake before.

“This is an incredible logistical undertaking for the core orchestra to perform outdoors with open water on one side,” Kastern explains. “The aesthetic quality of the setting is intended to match the quality of any RDSO performance, meaning that it will be excellent and beautiful.”

This third concert in Jazz at the Lake’s 2015 concert series is possible thanks to the working partnership between RDSO and Jazz at the Lake Festival Society, two artscentred, non profit organizations. “This will be the first time that Jazz at the Lake and RDSO have worked together, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with them for this concert,” says Eric Allison, board president for Jazz at the Lake Festival Society.

“This unique partnership means the audience will be treated to orchestral arrangements of jazz compositions by Dave and

Iola Brubeck, parents of Dan Brubeck,” Allison explains. Brubeck’s Trio includes Adam Thomas on bass and vocals and Tony Foster on piano, and they will be joined at the concert

by Allison and Fisher, who, “Will also be performing one of her original compositions with the orchestra, arranged for her by Claude Lapalme, RDSO music director and conductor.”

With its beautiful venue and incredible musical score, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra’s Evening of Jazz at the Lake promises to be a historic concert event this season.

“We’re looking forward to everything about this concert,” says Allison.

“Plus, presenting this unique concert on the weekend that Jazz at the Lake is traditionally offered allows us to give our audience of 12 consecutive years a brand new, exciting musical experience.”

Multi-artist showcase near Sylvan this weekend

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express An annual showcase of local artists’ treasures will be featured at the Farm Studio & Friends Third Annual Summer Art Show & Sale.

Set for Aug. 15th, it will be held on Pat Matheson’s picturesque farm near Sylvan Lake, and this year about 30 artists will be setting up displays of their work for the public to have a closer look at. Complete with live entertainment and refreshments, Matheson said the afternoon promises to be an enjoyable time for folks to drop by and check out what local artists have been up to.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“It’s actually really fun – I used to have to go out and search for artists, and now I find they are calling me asking if they can be a part of it,” he said.

Some of the artists set to attend include Darren and Deborah Petersen of Sparrow Glassworks. According to his web site, Darren has been creating blown glass for over 20 years. He received a BFA in glass from the Alberta College of Art & Design and is a regular Series instructor at Red Deer College.

“He has exhibited work across North America as well as in Germany and South Korea. Darren’s work is well represented in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and in private collections worldwide.”

Mary MacArthur and Danny Lineham of the Ponoka-based ‘Those Great Little

Books’ will also be showcasing their creations.

According to their web site, projects include, “Classic storybooks, sketchbooks, notebooks, diaries, gratitude journals, romantic books for lovers, guest books, photo albums and more. As well, we are always looking for unique one-off projects, either of our own creation or as special commissions.”

Others included in the show and sale are Candice Meyer who creates silver jewelry; Delburne ceramic artist Verna Ellison, Wendy Meeres who does both paintings and lamp work bead jewellery and Red Deer’s own Dave and Elizabeth Plumtree.

Dave is a gifted painter and Elizabeth creates a beautiful array of quilts, said Matheson.

Bonnie Laycock, a painter, will also be there, as will the Ponoka Potters Guild and woodworker Wayne Richardson. Trent Thomas Leach and Holly Elliott of the Red Deer-based Rogue Studios will also be at the event - Leach has 15 years of experience as a metal and glass artist and Elliott has more than 20 years experience with photography and 17 years in the adventure film industry.

“They set up between 8 and 10 a.m. and find a spot on my yard,” he said of the yearly routine of setting up the show. “I also open up the pasture for parking. Folks can just come in and wonder around. We’ve also got coffee, lemonade and things like that, too.”

Matheson, a gifted artist in his own right, fires clay in the ‘raku’ technique.

The raku-firing method originated centuries ago in Japan, and features handmolded pieces that are removed from the kiln while still glowing hot. Matheson then places them in large metal containers filled with bunched-up newspaper, which promptly burst into flame. The containers are then covered and the pieces of clay are smothered in smoke. After a few minutes, they are placed in water and bril-

There is a real problem with being vague I am listening to a great audio book right now called Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely, and it is amazing! It is full of some great stuff that is research based. It relates to the world of fitness in many ways and serves to not only help me understand myself, but also our clients.

Why do we say we are going to stay on track - no junk food, exercise every day and then at the first donut or Iced Capp or bag of chips, we are off track? The book delves into that, but there are factors involved and the biggest is mood. Separate from the temptation, we are perfect. Thee decision is easy, logical and makes sense.

No problem.

Then we are sitting in front of the temptation item, and instinct takes over.

The mind panics, ‘what if this chance never comes again?’ We indulge with a p promise to be better tomorrow. ‘The heat of the moment’ is a real and damaging

Another example is for people with bad credit card debt - the challenge is to place the card in a jar and fill the jar with water, then freeze it. If you want to buy something, you have to come home, thaw out the card and wait.

We work with our clients on this all the time, advising them to have a meal plan and to pre cook their meals, so that temptation is way less. You need to eat, so you have what you pre-made. If you go out for lunch or supper, chances are you are going to blow it. You have to be specific, every day

if you want to stay on track. Vague won’t cut it. “I will eat something today when the time comes” leads to disaster. Same with your workout time. “I will fit it in somewhere” is nearly impossible. Set a time, and stick to it, like an appointment.

Another awesome study the author did, was to give three similar classes different ways to complete their assignments for a semester. The first group was told they had absolute freedom to set their own deadlines for the four papers they had to write, as long as all four papers were handed in by the end of the semester, all was good.

They could set one deadline for all papers at the end, or set intermediate deadlines, and there was no penalty for being ahead of schedule. One rule was, that once they set the deadline, they could not change it, and if late, were charged 1% of their grade per day late. The instructor suggested four deadlines to help them stay on track, but it

was up to the students to choose. Some students chose intermediate deadlines, some didn’t. Another class was told that the only deadline was that all four papers were due at the end of the semester, and that was it.

The third class was dictated four very specific deadlines, no exceptions. Late meant no grade. At the end of the semester, the class with no deadline except the end did the worst. Papers were poorly written and rushed. The next best was the class with the self-chosen deadlines, and by far, the highest performing class, was the one that had been given the four strict deadlines, with no exceptions.

It’s human nature - as a rule, we do not function well with vague. We need deadlines. We need goals. We need intermediate goals. It’s how we work.

So avoid vague, and get specific!

Supreme Court beheaded by boneheaded politicians How can you learn to become a hypocrite? It’s easy. Take a course in Politics 101, then get elected to parliament. This will make it easy to postpone matters that demand instant attention. There’s no better example of hypocrisy than parliament’s move to delay implementation of the Supreme Court’s decision on assisted death until after the election.

The Harper government has added insult to injury by stacking the consultation panel with those opposed to assisted death.

It’s like putting the fox in charge of the hens, an inhumane despicable act for those crying out for help to end their suffering.

In February, the Supreme

JONES Court of Canada ruled that assisted death should be an option for those grievously and irremediably ill, and who wished to end their suffering with the help of a physician. The justices gave the government a year to implement the law. It’s taken the government five months just to form the panel. And there’s no doubt opponents of assisted death will make the guidelines unwieldy and

restrictive. The wisdom of the Supreme Court will end up being beheaded by boneheaded politicians.

Past surveys have shown that the majority of Canadians fear a lingering painful death devoid of dignity. This entire issue boils down to personal choice for those who wish it. So far no political party has grasped the fact that supporting assisted dying could help them win an election.

Dying with Dignity Canada (DWDC), says, “We receive calls from people who are desperately ill, know it’s a matter of time before they die, and ask if there’s a legal way to end their life peacefully.” These people are suffering from multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease,

cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, paralysis from a stroke or motor vehicle accident and other terminal illnesses.

Studies from U.S states and other countries that allow assisted death show that relatively few with terminal illness eventually ask for it. Rather, it is comforting for them just to know it is available.

It’s regrettable that only 12% of callers in the DWDC study said they had the support of their family doctor. Or that when assisted death was mentioned, the doctor did not listen and changed the subject.

Today, the Criminal Code states that neither DWDC, nor this journalist, can advise people on how to end their lives. But it is heartbreaking when callers ask how they can obtain drugs for this purpose and none are available without a phy-

sician’s prescription. What doctor is going to give one and go to jail?

Other desperate people even ask how they can obtain the ‘exit bag’ that’s placed over their head and connected to a helium tank.

It’s hard to imagine such a terminal scene for one’s last minutes with family members.

I’ve stressed for years that those wanting an assisted death should have the right to form their own committee. Mine would include my wife, children and my doctor who are aware of my wishes. I’d also be pleased to add a veterinarian who would treat me the same way he would ease the suffering of a beloved dog.

This political hypocrisy could end by drowning politicians with mail. Years ago I delivered 40,000 letters to Ottawa which helped to legalize heroin for terminal

cancer patients. Believe me, politicians fear adverse mail.

If you agree with assisted death, send a one sentence letter (better than an e-mail, and postage free) to Stephen Harper, 24 Sussex Dr., Ottawa, demanding action on this legislation. Or send an e-mail to Stephen. harper@parl.gc.ca.

This column was sent to Harper, Trudeau and Mulcair but all I’ve received were the usual sitting-onthe fence replies.

Those who oppose assisted death have every right to end their lives in whatever way they wish. But they do not have the right to impose their moral, religious or ethical views on others.

The law is the law.

RDC Kings basketball gets underway for season

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Since Coach Clayton Pottinger arrived at Red Deer College in 2011, the Kings basketball team has since been at the forefront of the national collegiate basketball stage.

For three consecutive years, Pottinger’s Kings conquered on provincial courts leading them to three national presences landing them a fourth place finish in the 2011/12 season at nationals and a silver medal in the 2013/14 season.

Just narrowly missing the mark on a national title, Pottinger was eager to return last season, but instead watched as the cookie that was a fourth consecutive national appearance crumbled before him during a first round loss at the provincial championships held in Fort McMurray last spring.

Heading into last season, Pottinger remembers himself feeling optimistic about the season and excited for the season, this year he says he feels slightly nervous.

While one might think they would be nervous following last season’s finish, he instead says he is nervous because this year’s team is, “So good that the only thing standing in their way of a national appearance is me as a coach – that’s how good this team is.”

With confidence in his team’s ability, and a 2014 CCAA men’s basketball Coach of the Year title under his belt, Pottinger says he is excited about both the returning players and a few newly signed players who attended the Kings’ training camp over the weekend at RDC. Two players remain on the team from their last visit to nationals in 2013 include JP Leblanc and 2014/15 Kings’ captain, Matt Johnson. Also returning from last year’s team will be Tyler Wise and Matt Mattear.

Newly signed and notable players include Ian Tevis (Seattle), Rodney Teal (Oklahoma City), Braeden Koteck (Regina) and Anthony Ottley (Pickering, Ont.) Pottinger explains both newly signed American players were the team’s number one picks from their scouting in the U.S., stating it’s rare for a team to sign both of their number one picks.

“They are just great basketball players who fill spaces and needs with both being very experienced as well as excellent scorers and athletes,” says Pottinger on Tevis and Teal.

“Part of our recruiting process is making sure guys understand the culture on our team and what it means to play on a winning team.

“There was some immediate chemistry between our returning players and some of the newer guys and that’s something you always hope for as a coach - it was exciting because you never know how players will respond to one another.”

Koteck, one of three notable Canadian signees hailing from Regina has been on the Kings’ radar since high school, having played a year of basketball out of Keyano College, before taking a year off and then returning to the courts for a recent University of Calgary I.D. Camp.

“He didn’t quite make the U of C team so at that point we started talking seriously about him coming here. He is a well-rounded combo guard – excellent at both the shooting and point guard positions.”

Ottley hadn’t originally planned to attend the training camp, but made the weekend what Pottinger referred to as a, “Pleasant surprise times ten.

“He is the real deal and he has the potential to be the best player in our league, and likely in all of Canada if he does what he can do,” he says.

Bucs shoot down the Stars, taking third place in league

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express It was a battle for third place in the Alberta Football League this weekend, where the Central Alberta Buccaneers emerged victorious over the St. Albert Stars with a score of 19-6.

Both teams headed into the game with a season record of 4-2. The Bucs, now with a third-place standings record of 5-2, will travel to Airdrie later this month for their final game of the regular season.

Bucs Head Coach Devon Hand was pleased with the overall results and is already looking forward to continuing the team’s improvement.

“I thought we were better than we were last week, and as a coach trying to get a team over the hump that’s all you can ask for. We still have a long ways to go – we left some points on the sidelines that we should have scored,” Hand said.

“We had a couple of mistakes. We gave up big plays in the second half there, so it was by no means a perfect outing, but we were better than we were last week so I’ll take that.”

Within the first five minutes of game play quarterback Matt Merkley gave a solid pass to fullback Pascal Plante, who ran the ball in for the first touchdown of the game.

These two players were recently switched in their positions on the offensive line.

“We just started with a new quarterback – Matt Merkley – and we need to get more continuity there to get momentum. This was the last game of the regular season before we head into the playoffs, so it’s all about momentum. It’s about keeping things moving and improving, and hopefully we can take that into the playoffs.”

The Bucs did carry a slow but steady momentum through the game after the inaugural touchdown. The offensive line worked hard to continuously push the ball forward, granting a favourable field position to the Bucs for the majority of the game.

The first quarter ended with a 7-0 lead for the Bucs, but quickly grew to a 9-0 lead at 17 minutes into game play.

Just a few minutes later, Merkley shone again when he retrieved a mishandled snap and ran the ball up the field securing some yards.

Unfortunately, a punt from Plante sent the ball into the hands of Stars’ player Adam Nesbitt.

The Bucs moved the game forward with strong offensive plays and eventually a second touchdown by Xavier Law-

rence 28 minutes into the game.

The Bucs’ offense brought 15 points to the team, and the score was rounded out with four points surrendered by the opposing QB. Hand praised his offensive and defensive lines for their roles in the victory.

“I think we did well today. We got good pressure today – we forced some bad passes and things like that, which is typically what we do defensively,” he said.

“I’m excited the offense was moving the ball and we didn’t have a huge amount of turnovers, just a few penalties.”

Penalties have been a major factor throughout the Bucs’ season. Hand said he guessed that they were one of the most penalized teams in the league, although he didn’t have an official record.

“To get ready for that playoff game we need to get rid of all the penalties because they’re killing us. I don’t know the stats for sure, but I’d say we are by far the most penalized team in the league and it’s incredibly frustrating,” he said.

He said these penalties could be attributed to the high

energy of the team and the need for a little bit more compatibility among its players.

“I think from an identity standpoint we’re still trying to feel that out and figure out who we are. We’re a bit reckless and bit over-zealous – we get excited at times. We’re just trying to figure that out. It was better this week than it was in weeks past and it’s improving.”

The third quarter passed without much action. The Bucs nearly shut out the Stars, but Branden Seimens scored a touchdown for his team very late in the fourth quarter.

This was the final home game for the Bucs in the regular season. The team will travel to battle the Airdrie Irish on Aug. 15th. Hand said he would not underestimate the opposing team, regardless of their record.

In addition to the game, both teams are competing to see which can raise the most pledges for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Changes in life are sometimes good for the soul Nobody likes change. Even when we know that change is for the better we are often reluctant to embrace it for fear of the unknown and fear of how it will affect our daily routine. I see this often with clients who are renovating, it is a stressful and messy process which often makes us wish we had never opened this Pandora’s box!

I am writing from home as a wonderful finish carpenter puts baseboards back into my bathroom, it has been two months of mess and dust and aggravation as I have completed a bathroom renovation. The metamorphosis has been wonderful and I am very pleased with the results but the process of change was not so pleasant and many times I wished that I had never begun. Many times I looked at the mess I had created and even though I could envision the finished results I yearned for the day before I started breaking tile – for that day

How many of us stay in a situation that isn’t amazing because we are afraid of change? From renovations to relationships I know the fear of striking out to make something better. Many times we yearn for those days just before we decided to renovate our homes, our careers or our lives. Just a few peaceful days when everything is normal and safe runs through our imagination as we look at the catastrophe all around us and we almost wish we could go back to the outdated and unfulfilling parts of our lives. It is a perfectly normal

human reaction to change even if it doesn’t make any logical sense.

Over the past few years I have renovated homes, changed my last name, moved and now am embarking on a new career path after a big change hit me last week. My employer of 10 years had decided to release me from my cage and allow me to strike out on my own and even though the new possibilities are exciting and exhilarating I look back at those few days of security and long for peace even though the outcome going forward is going to be amazing.

Change is good! Change is necessary for stimulation of our brains and imaginations and I encourage ever one of you who are considering a big change to step out and bravely forage new territory. If you are considering changing the flooring in your home, tear out some of the old stuff to encourage you to continue the process.

Stroke a vivid colour of paint on the wall of your living room to disrupt the sameness that envelops you from day to day.

Take pictures off of your wall and visually shake things up so that you are aware of the possibilities every time you look at that blank space. The first step into the process is always the most difficult and often the thing that keeps us from fulfilling our dreams If you are considering a renovation project and are paralysed by change, it might be a good idea to phone a friend. Get someone by your side who can look at the project without emotion and ask them to help you start the process. You know I am always here to help you with ideas and execution so I encourage you to jump in with both feet and enjoy the ride!

Tackling stubborn stains and odors The impacts of a reduced lending rate On Wednesday, July 15th, the Bank of Canada cut the overnight lending rate by 0.25%.

How does that affect you?

TURCOTTE If you are in a fixed-rate mortgage it has no impact at all. If you have other higher interest debt such as credit card or car loans, again it has no impact.

If you are one of the 12.5% of mortgage holders in a variable rate mortgage you did a mostly-happydance when the lender passed on a 0.15% rate cut to holders of variable rate mortgages and secured lines of credit.

Only mostly happy as you asked, “Where did the other 0.10% go?”

This is the second 0.25% rate drop this year, and the second time the mortgage lenders have retained 0.10% of that drop.

Lenders are increasing their profit margins on the variable rate product, and there is little that bor-

rowers can do about this.

The big question is whether or not the same metrics will apply when it comes time for rates to rise, which may well be some time off into the future. Will the next 0.25% rate increase result in just a 0.15% lender increase, or will lenders hit borrowers with the full increase?

Only time will tell. The fine print of mortgage documents gives this power to the lenders, as variable rate mortgages are granted at ‘lender prime’ not the Bank of Canada prime.

What about the impact of low rates on the housing market?

Again there appears, thus far, to be little impact on fixed rates, and the qualifying rate used to obtain a variable rate mortgage remains at 4.64%. In other words, the rate cut has not directly translated into greater borrowing power for consumers at all. Thus, it should do little to push prices any higher in the already hot markets.

From wall stains to washing machines, indoor stains and smells can be a challenge to tackle. Luckily, there are surprisingly simple methods to erase them for good. Here are a few tips to freshen up the most stubborn spots in your home.

Conceal wall stains with primer - have your kids made artwork of your walls, or has your leaky roof caused a water-damaged mess?

Tough wall stains like these can be hard to get rid of, but are easily sealed by applying a high-quality, stain-blocking primer. For example, KILZ Hide-All Primer Sealer covers problem areas on surfaces from drywall and woodwork to concrete and brick.

It even masks over dark stains without allowing color to bleed through. With only a one-hour drying time before applying a topcoat, this is the perfect one-weekend project to cross off your list.

Eliminate refrigerator odors - refrigerators are subject to a variety of spills and odors.

Making time for fridge maintenance can help prevent unusual odors and keep your food fresh longer. To cleanse and polish your fridge, begin by emptying the contents of your fridge and throwing out,

recycling or composting any food that is expired or beginning to smell.

Next, pull out any removable drawers or shelving and place them in the sink.

Using a damp, soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge, wipe down these pieces, the interior of your fridge and the door with a multi-purpose cleaner.

Or, mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one quart of hot water for a natural soap alternative.

Don’t forget the seams of the shelves and rubber door seal.

If your fridge requires an extra-deep cleaning, unplug it while you work to avoid wasting energy.

Before putting all of your food back into the fridge, wipe down the exterior of each jar or container with a damp cloth.

Repeat this process every two or three months for the best results.

Make grout lines shine tile surfaces are prone to dirt and debris, especially in bathrooms or high-traffic areas.

To keep tile looking fresh and new, grab an old toothbrush or electric toothbrush for a deeper scrub.

Before you start, wash the surface with water then mix

two parts baking soda with one part water. Scrub the resulting paste into the cracks and crevices, then douse with water again. If the grout lines are stained, spray a mixture of equal parts vinegar and warm water onto the area and brush.

After a final rinse, the grime will be gone.

Prevent a moldy washing machine - if you own a frontloading washing machine, you’ve probably noticed the unpleasant smell that can linger after completing a load of laundry.

Despite being more energyefficient, these machines have a tendency to hold odors and harbor mold. To clean and prevent grimy buildup, try this: instead of detergent, cycle two cups of vinegar and a quartercup of baking soda on a hot setting.

When it’s done, use a clean sponge to scrub down the inside. Finally, rinse with a plain-water cycle, and you’ll see (and smell) the results.
