Hi, my name is Landon Wiggins and I am a member of the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club. I am 10 years old and this is my second year in 4-H. This year I chose two projects, dog and photography. My dog’s name is Maggie, a seven-year-old

crossbreed. Maggie and I have been practicing lots and are excited to show off our achievements at show and sale. This will also be my first time selling a picture, Lot 151. I hope to see you all at show and sale this year!

My name is Kimberley Davis (Lot 124) and I am from the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H club.

I have been in 4-H for five years and this is my third year having a market lamb.

Rose Lake’s projects include: sheep, horse, photography, foods, swine, dog, steer and Cloverbuds.

The projects I am in are foods and sheep.

This is a picture of me and my market lamb Lilly.

Lilly is a Dorset Southdown cross. Currently, Lilly weighs 100 pounds and is expected to weigh around 120 at show and sale. This year, show and sale takes place Aug. 15-19 at the stockyards. (4665 Cattle Drive, Williams Lake). I will be showing and selling my lamb. I hope to see you there!

Hi, my name is Kylie Davis and I am in the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H Club.

My projects are foods, photography and market lamb.

I am nine years old and I have been in 4-H for four years. This is my first year being a junior.

I like 4-H because it is good for learning how to take care of animals and you get to learn how to do a lot of different things like cooking, taking pictures and public speaking.

The projects that Rose Lake/Miocene has this year are horse, steer, photography, lamb, foods, swine, dog and Cloverbuds.

I am showing and selling my lamb, Sir Lewis, at show and sale in August.

My lamb is a Southdown Dorset and he weighs 75 pounds and he is expected to weigh approximately 100 pounds at show and sale.

This year I have three projects including horse, heifer and steer.

My horse was trained under western discipline by myself.

Both beef projects are Black Angus.

Hello, my name is Paige Sepkowski.

I am 16 years old and this is my seventh year in 4-H. I am a senior member as well as the president of the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club.

I have done both market swine and market beef projects during my years with 4-H. This year I have chosen to raise another beef project.

My market steer’s name this year is Diego and he is a Black Angus/Simmental cross.

My lot number is 142. I purchased my steer from Meadowbrook Ranch and he has progressed wonderfully!

All of us 4-H members have been working and preparing for months and now all of our hard work will pay off at this year’s 57th annual 4-H Show and Sale.

Button and Buttercup’s breed is Speckle Park.

Speckle Park is a Canadian breed. It was recognized

in 2006. Button is shy and quiet and isn’t super loud and is quite a picky eater.

Buttercup is an animal that loves to eat a lot of grain but is a beautiful heifer. I am having a lot of fun in 4-H.

Antonia Westwick Hi. My name is Antonia Westwick and this is my fourth year as a junior in the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club.

This year I am doing swine. My pig’s name is Miss Piggy.

I’ve had Miss Piggy since April.

She is a well grown pig with a nice ham and a long back.

In June she weighed 110 pounds by me feeding her and her buddy 10 pounds a day.

You can see me and Miss Piggy at the show and sale in August from the 15th to 19th, this summer at the stockyards, in the Rose Lake Miocene swine group.

Kimberly French

Hello, my name is Kimberly French, Lot 129. I am a member of the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H club.

This year I chose two projects, horse and swine.

My horse’s name is Hawk, a 24-year-old Quarter Horse X Morgan gelding.

I love to ride him very much although he likes to play games with me sometimes.

He won’t be for sale but my pig named Puddle will be.

Puddle is a Berkshire X Landrace. He is very cuddly and he can get up the

sundeck stairs. Don’t ask me how he figured that out! On his first two days at our place I sat with him and he fell asleep on me.

When he got a little older we let him out and since then he has been a free range pig.

All he does is hang around the house and waits for a treat or scratch.

He loves company and likes to be cuddled.

Hope I see you at this year’s Show and Sale starting Aug. 15 with the sale on Aug. 19 at the Williams Lake stock yards.

Learning to Do... by Doing Maria DiMarco

Hi! My name is Maria DiMarco and I am a member of the Big Lake 4-H Club.

This is my eighth year in 4-H and my first as a senior member (grades 8-plus).

This is also my second year on the Big Lake 4-H Club executive as the treasurer.

I started my 4-H career in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club as a Cloverbud (someone who is under age nine wishing to somewhat participate in 4-H), but after three years there my family moved out to the Big Lake area and I joined the Big Lake club.

We have always been a small club and currently have 15 members. This year in 4-H I am doing a market swine project and a unit two photography project.

My pig’s name is Hulk, and she is a girl, the downside of having pre-arranged names.

We purchased her along with her two siblings from Fred and Elaine Stafford in April. They all look very well conformed, and though freaky at first, they

warmed up to us. One of the other pigs is my brother’s 4-H project, and the last one is for our freezer.

Hulk is currently the biggest of the three.

I also participate in speech competitions in 4-H and am very good at them. This year I won first in my club, went on to districts and won second, and then went on to regionals and won first! I then went to the BC 4-H Provincial Communications Finals in Kelowna. I did not place but had the time of my life,

meeting new people and learning many new things.

I love 4-H and everything it has taught me. I get to meet new people and learn new things about agriculture and animals.

Thank you to all of the leaders and parents who have taught me so much!

I am glad that I still have many years ahead of me to learn more. I am looking forward to the 57th annual Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale this year Aug. 15-19. I hope to see you all there!

Cadence Halfnights Hi, my name is Cadence Halfnights, I am 10 years old and a junior 4-H member. This is my second year in 4-H and I am a part of the Big Lake 4-H club.

Last year I did photography and was awarded grand champion. This year I am going to try something new.

I am doing a market lamb. His name is Boots and he is a Kahtaden cross.

Kahtadens are hair sheep so he looks a bit different than his woolly cousins.

I have lots of work to do to get my lamb ready for show and sale this year, but I think I’m up for the challenge.

I really enjoyed meeting everyone who attended last year. Boots and I sure hope to see you there at the 57th annual 4-H Show and Sale Aug. 15-19.

Georgia DiMarco Hello everybody!

My name is Georgia DiMarco and I am from the Big Lake 4-H Club.

I am a fourth year junior, and in other words, this is my last year as a junior.

This year I am raising a dry yearling ewe, Bessie, and a fed lamb, Thor.

Last year Bessie was the Grand Champion Ewe Lamb in a class of three.

Thor on the other hand, at show and sale, will be put into a class with about eight to 12 other fed lambs around his size.

I am very excited about our upcoming club

achievement day and our 57th annual 4-H Show and Sale.

Learning to Do... by Doing Emily Swan

Hi, my name is Emily Swan and I am in the Big Lake 4-H club.

This is my third year in 4-H and my second year in swine.

My pig’s name is Flash.

The reason why his name is Flash is because my leader and the swine kids wanted to do a theme where we all pick a superhero name for swine project and I picked Flash.

My pig is a Landrace breed and he is a male. Flash loves to run around with the other pig that is in his pen that keeps him company.

Flash also loves to eat

EVERYTHING! He is a big hog! He loves to eat grass, leafs, his grain, scraps, and a whole lot of other stuff.

He especially likes to eat bread. I really enjoy taking care of and raising a swine, it is a lot of fun.

This year I am also in poultry and this is my second year in poultry.

I’ve liked chickens for a long time.

My project this year is swine and I started with him when he was only 32 pounds.

Hi! My name is Courtney Rankin.

I’m in the Springhouse 4-H Club and this year will be my ninth year in 4-H. Throughout my time in 4-H I have done a few different kinds of projects.

I have always done swine, but I did a rabbit and a sheep project both for two years along with my swine project.

My swine this year is named Chara. She is a Tamworth Pyeman cross and I purchased her from Ken and Tracey Waslen in

April.

Right at the time I got her she loved being scratched and would roll over almost instantly.

I’m sure enjoying the experience and commitment to raising a swine in 4-H this year. I hope I’ll see you at show and sale week, which starts Saturday, Aug. 15 and goes to Aug. 19. Learning to Do... by Doing Orrin Watkinson Karena Sokolan Hello.

My name is Orrin Watkinson and this is my fourth year as a senior member of the Springhouse 4-H Club and first year as president.

Being 17 years old I am also in my ninth year of 4-H, and have completed Cloverbud, fed lamb, and fed steer projects in earlier years.

This year I am doing a fed steer by the name of Ferdinand, and he is a Hereford that weighs around 1,300 pounds.

I purchased him from my grandparents, Fred and Barb Watkinson , down in Lillooet, the owners of Foster Bar Ranch.

Our lot number is 178 and we will be attending the show and sale this year.

I joined 4-H so that I

could learn about raising farm animals and I have really enjoyed learning about raising a fed steer and all that is involved in showing and grooming a beef project.

I enjoy attending the 4-H functions and getting together with other clubs, especially at show and sale.

Hello, my name is Karena Sokolan. I am 14 years old and have been in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club for eight years.

I have had so much fun, and have made many memories over my years in 4-H. This is my first time ever raising a market lamb.

The previous four years, I have raised a market steer. I won Reserve Grand Champion market steer last year.

Therefore sheep is a whole new animal I must learn about. This year my first ever sheep, is named Norman. Norman is a Suffolk and has white wool and with a black face, and black on the bottom half of his legs. He is really big and last week already weighed 130 pounds! But he is perfectly proportioned and I hope to do well with him.

I also am doing my second year of horse. Both years I have ridden my

gelding, Slider. Slider is a 16-hand, Running Quarter horse. He has a chestnut coloured coat, and light brown mane and tail, with white socks on his back legs. I love him so much and he is such a gentle and sweet horse.

Norman and Slider are really wonderful but they’re both a lot of work.

Marcus Kennedy Hello. My name if Marcus Kennedy.

This is my fourth year in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club and I am currently raising a market hog named Hamhuis.

Alongside with my hog I’m also fixing a push lawn mower.

Hamhuis is a friendly silly pig. He enjoys attention and absolutely loves belly rubs.

I have had a great year so far doing great in the judging rally and in club speeches.

Hamhuis weighed around 175 pounds on July 5 so he should be right around the correct market weight by show and sale.

Allan Stafford Hi my name is Allan Stafford. This is my eighth year in 4-H and the Chimney Valley 4-H Club.

This year I am doing gardening planter boxes.

They look like the old toolboxes that were used long ago.

This year in 4-H has been fun and exciting.

We start the year with our first monthly meeting when we hold our club elections, and this year I am the club president again.

I did a speech this year on Charlie Crane, who is the Canadian version of Helen Keller.

He was also the first deaf-

blind Canadian to study at a Canadian university.

I placed second at the club level competition and placed third at the district level competition with my speech.

I am also attending one of the many trips available to the senior members with junior proficiencies called Youth Action.

This parTticular trip will focus mainly on helping all of us who are attending, with the ability to enhance our leadership and team building skills.

It takes place in Kamloops at Thompson Rivers University.

This year’s show and sale will be held Aug. 15-19 with the project shows all week and the sale at the end on Wednesday the 19th.

Hello, my name is Parker Sokolan.

I am 12 years old and this year is my fifth year in 4-H and my first year doing a market lamb project.

For my two previous years I did market steer and it was very fun but I decided I wanted to try something new this year and I picked sheep.

I am going to have to learn a lot but it will be a new experience and definitely fun.

Anna is my sheep and she is a Suffolk.

She is white with a black face, and bottom half legs and she is shy but very nice and gentle.

She is funny and sweet.

She always makes me laugh whether it’s jumping as high as a kangaroo or racing with me behind her to get some water as an excuse not to walk.

I walk Anna as much as I can and feed her every morning and night.

I am also doing a small engine project which is really fun and interesting.

I would really like my hard work appreciated.

Learning to Do... by Doing Adriane Kennedy Hi, my name is Adriane Kennedy and this is my fifth year in 4-H. I am part of the Chimney Valley 4-H Club and am the vice-president.

This year I am raising a home grown hog named Doug.

Doug is a Landrace male pig and was born February 15. I am very impressed with Doug’s hams!

They are developing very well and should be big and juicy by show and sale!

He is currently 175 pounds so I am estimating that he will be between 250 pounds and 270 pounds by show and sale.

He has excellent length to him and a perfect width! If you are looking for something to fill your

Hi my name is Ella Carson. This is my first year in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club. I love 4-H because it’s fun to work with pigs and other animals and help out in the community.

I am currently raising a female market hog.

Her name is Clive; she was born on Feb. 20, 2015.

She is a landrace with huge, juicy hams!

She has the cutest eyes and the funniest face! If you scare her once you will never earn her trust again.

She is 170 pounds to date, so I estimate that by show and sale she will be 250 pounds, the ideal mar-

This year in club speeches I placed third, and went on to district speeches where I placed fourth.

I am really excited about this because it was my first time public speaking!

Other community sports that I participate in are soccer, track and field, running and speed skating.

We are hosting our first speed skating meet in October!

4-H B.C. photo contest deadline Sept. 15 The 4-H British Columbia Photo Contest is back!

There are five photo categories: Nature; People; Animals; Agriculture; and 4-H Theme.

To enter you must be a current 4-H member or

leader.

All 4-H British Columbia members and leaders are eligible to enter.

Entrants do not have to be in the photography project.

Entries will be judged in two age categories: for

current 4-H members; and for 4-H adults, parents, leaders.

First place in each category will receive $25 in prize money and the photo will be featured in the 2016 4-H British Columbia Calendar.

The grand overall photo will receive $150 in prize money and will be the cover feature for the 2016 4-H British Columbia Calendar.

Hello, my name is Michaela Wilson.

I am 15 years old and this is my second year in 4-H as a senior member of the Horsefly 4-H club.

This year I have chosen to do market swine as my sale project and photography as my secondary project.

My pig’s name is Speckles. He was born on Feb. 25, 2015.

I was able to bring him home on April 11, 2015.

Speckles is a Yorkshire Landrace cross.

He is a barrow which is a castrated male pig, he is mostly black with pinkish spots all over.

I have learned that controlling an animal is not

the easiest thing to do.

He has a mind of his own.

Every day I go down to the pig pen and brush him as well as wash him, feed, change water as needed and work on training him with various different methods, one of which is

the cane.

A cane is exactly what it sounds like.

It is made of a hard plastic or wood and is used to teach your animal to move the direction you would like it to go, especially in the show ring.

Show and sale is a week long 4-H activity at the end of the 4-H year when all the members of each club come together and compete in show classes.

At the end of that week most members will sell their projects.

Show and sale takes place at the Williams Lake stock yards, Aug. 15-19. Sale night is Aug. 19 starting at 5:30 p.m.

Bring yourself and your family, tell your friends and colleagues.

Come on over for a visit to see all the different projects and please stop by my pen to meet me and my pig, Speckles.

I am descended from the finest stock of the House of Yorkshire.

In my lineage, there are many fine specimens of plump, well-rounded, and well mannered knights, earls, and dukes.

Many years ago, my family immigrated to the beautiful country of Canada, where we settled in the Cariboo region of British Columbia, with me as I came of age, moving on to a small country estate in

Horsefly.

My page, Joshua Yahnke, would like to extend a formal invitation to everyone for me, to attend, participate, and enjoy the 57th annual 4-H Show and Sale Aug. 15-19 at the Wil-

liams Lake Stockyards.

I shall be in attendance all week, and on one special day, I shall mingle with all the common swine in a show to demonstrate the wonders of what the life of a country gentlemanly pig, such as myself, should look like.

On Aug. 19, there shall be a Parade of Champions starting at 5:30 p.m., in which, hopefully, my page, Joshua, shall represent me.

The final events of the week will be a sale, starting at 6:30 p.m. where I

will make a final formal appearance, and be bought by a deserving person, who will be treated to a Buyer’s Appreciation Dinner afterwards.

Karina Sukert Hello everyone! My name is Karina Sukert.

I’m 19 years old and this is my 10th and final year in the Horsefly 4-H Club!

I’m finishing off my year with a beautiful Charolais Angus steer named Chevrolet! When I bought Chevy from Bob and Nikki at 7 Quarter Charolais, he weighed in at 650 pounds.

At the beef weigh in on Feb. 14, he weighed in at 810 pounds. I feed my boy

25 pounds of dairy ration mixed feed, with four flakes of hay, and I work him every day. My 4-H achievement day is Sunday July, 19 so we’ll see how much he weighs then!
