The current version of the iconic Oak Bay Beach Hotel is benefiting from a strong summer tourist trade.

The hotel, which is still in receivership, has made a few seasonal changes, including a new food and beverage service at the pool for the summer.

“It’s been our best summer yet, without a doubt,” said the hotel’s general manager Michelle

Le Sage. She said the hotel is running close to full every night, averaging 93 per cent capacity.

“We are enjoying a very, very successful summer.”

Additional small changes include a more mobile-friendly website and a gift store selling Oak Bay Beach Hotel branded clothing and small items.

“We’re glad to see it coming online,” said Le Sage. “There’s not a lot of huge change.”

Fans of the hotel’s dinner theatre can look forward to more shows in October. The first will be Almost Johnny, a tribute to the late Johnny Cash.

The hotel went into receivership in December 2014 with an estimated debt of $125 mil-

lion. Local developers Kevin and Shawna Walker ceded their ownership to receiver Ernst and Young. At the time, the receivers said nothing will change regarding operation of the hotel.

The 139,000 square foot hotel opened in 2012 and replaced the old 49-room Oak Bay Beach Hotel.

The original hotel was built in 1927 and was completely destroyed by fire in 1930 and an exact replica was rebuilt with all of its old-world charm.

Many of the features of that hotel were used when the newest version was built in 2012.

Oak Bay Police received several reports of a cougar prowling the streets of Oak Bay early Monday morning.

At approximately 6:45 a.m. Aug. 10, Oak Bay Police received three credible reports of a cougar being sighted in the area of Musgrave Street and Dewdney Street, said A/Sgt. Rick Anthony, Oak Bay Police community liaison officer.

Police searched the area thoroughly with no success.

The Oak Bay Parks department placed advisory signs around Uplands Park as it was suspected that the cat may have gone into the park, Anthony said.

Namibian girl changes Oak Bay woman’s life

In 2001, Oak Bay’s Eileen Greene travelled to Namibia in southwest Africa with an international team to explore the AIDS epidemic. It was there that Greene met a girl who would change her life forever.

Greene was working in the Katatura Hospital in the early 2000s, researching the disease that was spreading rapidly throughout the country.

“We worked in a huge inner city hospital, 850 beds — no soap, no wash cloths, no towels. It was filthy,” said the Oak Bay resident and professor of nursing at the University of Victoria.

Stage 1 water restrictions continue despite dry conditions Yes, you can water your lawn and flowers.

Watering restrictions in Oak Bay follow the guidelines of the Capital Regional District.

Currently at Stage 1, Oak Bay does not have a complete ban on watering as lawn watering is allowed on Wednesday and Saturday from 4 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. for even-numbered addresses.

For odd-numbered addresses, lawn watering can occur on Thurs-

day and Sundays from 4 to 10 a.m and 7 to 10 p.m.

According to the CRD website, they are continuing to monitor the water supply on a daily basis.

As of Aug. 6, the Sooke Lake Reservoir was 77.1 per cent full, which is marginally lower than where the level has been at this time of year in recent years but, this does not pose a water supply concern at this time, the CRD noted.

The current daily water demand is typical as compared to the pre-

vious five-year July daily average of 205 to 210 million litres per day across the Regional Water Supply System.

While Greater Victoria remains at Stage 1 restrictions, conservation and discretionary use is encouraged.

Local boaters to vie for best hand in poker run Steven Heywood News staff

A poker run for boats is back this summer.

The Sidney Poker Run will take place Saturday, Aug. 15 from the Port Sidney Marina and organizers are welcoming all boats and boat owners – whether they have a skiff, a runabout,

a cruiser, a fishing boat or a 60-foot yacht.

“It’s not a race,” says one of the event organizers, Dale Backhaus.

“We have a long and a short course so as many people who want to take part, can.”

The Sidney Poker Run is a revival of the Vancouver Island Poker Run, which had

been held out of Sidney until five years ago.

That event had started in approximately 2000.

“It’s been renamed, has a new look and new logos and it’s open to a lot more boats,” said organizer Debbie Tracz.

felt it was time to bring the fun back to the boating community.

The Sidney Poker Run is definitely a social event for local boat owners – and it also raises money for the Sidney Lions Food Bank and the Saanich Marine Search and Rescue Society.

“It’s going to be a ton of fun,” said Tracz. “It’s a full day on the water.”

Following a captain’s safety meeting, the poker run starts at 9:30 a.m. off Sidney’s Bevan Pier.

Backhaus said they are hoping to have a lot of vessels on the water that day.

The long course is 88 miles and the short, 30 miles, with stops at various Gulf islands.

There’s a lunch stop for all vessels, no matter which course they choose to take, at Mill Bay Marina.

The seventh annual contest is now open for entries and encourages shutterbugs to capture the best of British Columbia’s wildlife through the lens, whether the subjects are in your own backyard or in the vast natural wilderness of the province.

All amateur photographers can enter the competition, which runs through Sept. 30, by submitting their most impressive

digital images.

“We are constantly amazed at the mindblowing photos we receive – they really showcase the astonishing diversity of animals we have throughout B.C., in both urban settings and isolated locations,” says BC SPCA chief scientific officer Dr. Sara Dubois.

“From hummingbirds captured mid-flight in a garden ornament’s reflection to a Momma grizzly bear and her cubs crossing a river, the images are stunning and really make it tough for judges to choose the

winning photos.”

Joanie McCorry never leaves home without a camera.

The Oak Bay artist loves to wander and take photographs, especially of flowers, whenever and wherever inspiration hits.

“I’m always walking around, I take all my photos ... with my iPhone,” the 62-year-old says. “I post (photos) on Facebook everyday just to make people happy.”

Bringing a smile to people’s faces with her art is what McCorry does best, and it’s a mission that is reflected in her work of greeting cards, Perido Tulips, made of photographs, 3-D paper castings, and recycled materials.

“I recycle everything,” McCorry says.

“I’m into green, upcycled, repurposed greeting cards, so whether they have Scrabble pieces or dominoes or stamps or buttons or things other people would throw away, people know to give [to] me and I’ll make a card out of it.”

Whether showing her work at local farmers’ markets –McCorry is a regular at the Oak Bay Night Market and the James Bay Market among others – or conducting art demonstrations with fellow members of the Oak Bay Community Artists Society, McCorry always brings her upbeat, can-do attitude, a result of her being able to share her passion with others.

“Now that I’m retired, might as well do what you love and have a passion for,”

she says.

“What I used to just do on weekends now I can do all day if I want to.”

Practicing her art, and sharing her wealth of inspiration, is exactly what McCorry and other artists will be doing at the Bowker Creek Brush Up this Sunday, Aug. 16.

“I’ve always liked being creative, so to me making all different types of greeting cards is a way that I can practice all different types of art that’s just in a smaller form,” McCorry says “[Many] of the people in our group (the Oak Bay Community Artists Society), a large percentage, are retired, so we’re at choice of doing the art that we love and being able to share it at the Bowker Creek Brush Up, that’s always amazing.”

In recent years, the Society has also encouraged a younger generation of artists to show and share their work at the event.

“Some artists we’ve had returning for two to three years, but young artists that are getting quite well-known and selling their art (at the Brush Up),” McCorry explains.

A former co-ordinator of the annual event, now in its 11th year, McCorry says she cannot imagine a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

“It’s very scenic and I think it’s a good destination for

people to go to and just have a nice wander through, and check out all the artists,” she says.

“To me, it’s just meeting the people that come by, everyone walks by and talks, and shares their love of art... that’s my favourite part.”

Canada embarks on marathon campaign They’re off and running. But this federal election campaign will more closely resemble a marathon than a sprint.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper paid a visit to Governor General David Johnston at Rideau Hall last week to dissolve parliament and officially start the campaign for the election set for Oct. 19. That’s 78 days, more than double the typical 37-day campaign.

Anyone who has switched on a TV, picked up a newspaper or listened to the radio could be forgiven for believing that the campaign has already been running for months.

What’s different now that the writ has officially been dropped, is that a whole new set of rules kicks in. So why fire up the campaigns now instead of five weeks out from the election, which has typically been the case?

Upon leaving Rideau Hall, Harper told reporters that “it’s important that these campaigns be funded by the parties themselves, rather that the taxpayers.”

Well, that certainly makes sense ... if only it were true.

Elections Canada estimates a traditional 37-day campaign costs the government agency about $375 million and this year’s longer effort is expected to add more than $100 million to that tab.

The longer campaign will also double the $25 million spending limit on political parties, with taxpayers on the hook for reimbursing up to half of what parties spend on a national campaign.

The real benefit of the early election call is to Harper’s Conservative Party, which is sitting on more cash than all its rivals combined. And the onset of the campaign follows a flurry of spending announcements by the governing Tories that would have made Santa proud.

But politicians can be expected to use any situation to their advantage. And now that the race is on, it’s the voters who will set the course for how it finishes.

A multi-sport athlete, Kelsey has only been playing rugby for about one year. She’s excelled at the game but says performing at an elite level is not without its sacrifices.

“His skies and his water are very Group of Seven, and he paints deep in the forest sometimes so they’re darker images sometimes,” said the Eclectic Gallery owner.

Brennan’s main job is as a sound recordist and he has $5,000 worth of digital recording equipment he lugs out into pristine spaces in his backpack.

He’s an avid avoider of manmade sounds. He came to the West Coast to start last summer, spending time in places such as the woods of Strathcona Provincial Park, Kennedy Lake and Cathedral Grove.

“He’ll set up his recording equipment and then as he’s recording the sound he’ll set up an easel and paint,” said Taylor, whose gallery will feature the Canadian wilderness artist’s work starting Aug. 17.

“We knew about his work and liked the style of his paintings. They’re very loose, almost Group of Seven like, really nice brushwork. And they’re small so very reasonable.”

Having spent his childhood exploring the moors, hills and glens of the Scottish Highlands, the land and man’s relationship to it continues to be the main theme of his work in Canada.

“He is a plein air artist so he paints mostly in the landscape,” Taylor said. “It’s unexpected places – or places familiar to us but unexpected ways of seeing them.” reporter@oakbaynews.com

Therapy goes to the dogs Canines help patients suffering chronic illnesses Kendra Wong News Staff

Every Monday morning for the past year, Lisa Markin and her two service dogs, Rowan and Cajun, head over to Glengarry Hospital in Fairfield.

Markin and her dogs are part of INSPIRE Animal Assisted Therapy, a program that uses furry canine friends to help people of all ages suffering from chronic illnesses, degenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, as well as people recovering from strokes or car accidents or dealing with developmental disabilities such as autism. “On the outside looking in, if you’re a fly on the wall, it would just look like the dog is playing with the patient, but, in actuality, the goals with the patients are very specific,â€? said Markin, a registered nurse and owner/operator of INSPIRE. Unlike pet therapy when a volunteer brings their dogs for patients to meet and pet, Markin develops exercises that are specific to the patients’ objectives, working on fine motor dexterity, gross motor skills, cognition and memory involving the dog. “For example, if we had a patient who is working on standing endurance, say after a car accident, we would put the dogs on a raised surface and do activities with the dog, such as brushing,â€? Markin said, adding they sometimes work with the same patient for months in 20 to 40-minutes sessions. “What I’ll find is that people will be so engaged with the interactions with the dogs that they’ll exceed their expectations ‌ They’ll work harder, they’ll work longer at their exercises because they want to make the animal happy, they want to give them a treat.â€?

All the while, Markin is assessing the patient, documenting progress.

The dogs themselves have shining personalities.

Rowan is an 11-year-old golden retriever who loves cauliflower and is close to retirement, while Cajun is a four-year-old yellow lab who loves his kibble. Both are canine assisted intervention dogs that went through roughly two years of training, learning 55 commands and passing a series of tests before they officially became certified service dogs through a school in Burnaby. “These dogs are raised and trained by [Pacific Assistance Dogs Society] to specifically work with patients with physical disabilities other than blindness,� Markin said. “People are calmer with the dogs around, they’re more engaged, they’re more

social and, the biggest thing, is they’re willing to try harder and longer with their therapy.�

Chris Charnell, a patient at Glengarry Hospital, has been working with the dogs for roughly a year and has learned several of basic commands such as “leave it,� indicating the dog should not touch a treat, and “release,� allowing the dog to reach the treat. “I think [Rowan] is lovely,� he said, adding he likes playing a variety of games such as the fishing game and racquetball with the dogs. “They’re just so faithful.�

Shelley Gurvey, manager of residential services at Glengarry, said the program has benefited residents “immeasurably.� “Our residents are distracted from their concerns and we find that most people love the dogs,� Gurvey said. “They are able to do things that if you just ask them outright like ‘would you move this, would you open your hand’ and they would say ‘no’ or ‘I can’t.’ Kendra Wong/News staff But when you get the dogs involved, the therapeutic results are immeasurable.
