Westlake Community Society receives funding for beach enhancements

A $30,000 cheque from the provincial government to go towards beach enhancements was presented at the Summer Village of Parkland Beach’s annual pancake breakfast, held Aug. 1.

Wildrose MLA Jason Nixon presented the cheque which was received through the Community Facility Enhancement Program matching grant to Barry Martins, Chairman of Friends of the Lakefront, a committee of the Westlake Community Society.

“It is with great pleasure that I present this cheque to help with these projects,” said Nixon.

The funding, which is part of a matching grant, will go towards the engineering guidelines for a beach enhancement project.

The grant will go towards engineering and construction costs for interconnecting pathways on the beach. Funding will also go towards bringing sand in to level out low beach areas.

“When the water came up so high it started washing the sand out and the really low areas stayed wet. We want to build those areas up and bring the sand in based on engineering recommendations. That way we will protect the lake and enhance the beach,” said Martins.

Ponoka County has been a great financial support for the beach front, contributing close to $200,000 to beach enhancements, including a tot playground, new toilets and other smaller projects.

“Ponoka County has been very good to us,” said Martins.

Friends of the Lakefront, a committee of the Westlake Community Society, was formed in 2009.

The object of the group is to seek stakeholder input, prepare short and long-term plans for lakefront improvement projects, pursue grants and obtain approval from appropriate authorities. continued on page 12

Criminals charged after downtown crime spree

Two criminals, bent on thievery and vandalism in downtown Rimbey, while unsuspecting citizens of Rimbey were still asleep in their beds, are now behind bars.

In the early morning hours of Thur., Aug. 6 the men attempted to break into an ATM at Servus Credit

Union. They were unsuccessful, but caused a great deal of damage in their failed attempt,” said Const.

Carman Dutz.

“They then broke into a service station and made off with an undisclosed amount of cigarettes and money,” he added.

The pair, not finished with their path of vandalism, set fire to the truck that

they stole to commit these crimes, and fled north.

Later that same day, RCMP from Breton/ Thorsby made arrests after a dangerous pursuit, Dutz said.

stolen truck, and tried to run over an officer. They are now facing a slew of charges from multiple serious crimes from Hinton, Breton, Rocky Mountain House, and Rimbey.

The constable later confirmed the criminals who broke into the Rimbey businesses are now behind bars and facing charges relating to the crimes.

Almost 20 years ago my brother came to visit us from Saskatchewan, bringing with him an unlikely gift.

A cherry tree.

Bringing a cherry tree, especially from Saskatchewan, does beg the obvious question.

Why? Well, apparently this particular brand of cherry tree was prairie hardy, he said. The tree, he told me, would look good in our back yard which, at the present moment was barren of pretty much everything except a wild rose bush and a whole lot of potential.

And, best of all, it would produce cherries.

Well, never in my life had I had any desire for a cherry tree, but, then I was an Alberta girl who grew

ignored, (apparently, cherry trees are good with that), our tree from Saskatchewan flourished.

This year, as in the past, we have a bountiful harvest.

The tree, bless its hardy prairie soul, is laden with cherries. We could have cherry pie, cherry custard, cherry jam, even cherry soup if there was such a thing.

Realistically, I’m getting quite sick of it.

It started out great.

“Oh my goodness,” I said to my husband. “Did you see all the cherries on that tree? Isn’t it wonderful!”

So he picked cherries.

And I picked cherries. And then we pitted cherries, us-

ing a straw to push those little pits out, a stiff gin and tonic, and determination.

I made jam. I made cherry pie. I made cherry soufflé and some other thing that tasted better than it looked. I froze cherries.

After using several pounds of sugar to sweeten whatever I was concocting, I could no longer move in my kitchen as my feet became stuck to the floor.

Before long, everything was sticky, including me. I went to answer the phone and had to peel my fingers off of the receiver.

In desperation, I began coaxing relatives, friends, even strangers to come pick cherries. I offered them free food and drink.

No one came!

Still the cherry tree seems full of fruit, its branches heavy with little clusters of deep red berries, just waiting for someone to come along and help themselves.

My brother passed away a few years ago. And every year when my cherry tree springs to life, I think of him.

I remember the way his eyes crinkled up when he laughed and his eternal optimism and how he believed in things like cherry trees that would flourish in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

And, as I make yet another cherry pie in my sticky kitchen, I smile.

As usual, he was right!

Everyone knows they are prairie hardy! I never did hold out a lot of hope that Old Man Winter would be benevolent to any fruit tree, except maybe our trusty crabapple!

Against all odds, we planted the cherry tree, me all happy and optimistic and humming the song, “It’s cherry pink and apple blossom time.” It seemed fitting to hum such a song at the time. Anyway, I always sang when my brother came to visit because when he came, it seemed all things were possible, and life was good and happy.

Before long, I, who had never, ever wanted a cherry tree, decided it was a pretty cool thing to have. I, actually, got all smug and proud, bragging about it to anyone who would listen.

“Yeah, we have this cherry tree in our back yard,” I would say, slyly, waiting for a reaction. “It’s pretty cool. My brother brought it from Saskatchewan.” I would slide my eyes towards the corner of the back yard where I would gaze in rapture at the tree, especially if it happened to be covered in a froth of blossoms, smelling all delicate, like spring or fine white lace.

In spite of being mostly

Sid and I were within shotgun distance of Sturgis — this was only after 4,900 kilometers of travelling. We didn’t take the fast route from the Ponoka County by any normal standards.

Our motorcycles travelled through British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Cali-

fornia, Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming before our head lights got with range of the Datokas. Needless to say, Sid and I had taken the very wide travel loop to the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

One of the major premises of the trip was to meet up with some other blokes.

Sid had mates from Australia flying into to Texas and Los Angeles. The two Aussies that had landed in Texas had long since rode up, on a couple of Harleys, and were well acquainted with the motorcycle rally before Sid and I had crossed the U.S. border. There was seven other Australian’s departing from L.A. The first two, from Down Under, we intersected with were in

Sacramento, California. We stomped on the boardwalks of ‘Old Sac’, ate expensive steaks, and attempted to get entrance into some highfalutin club — between the riding boots and the denim clothing shared between us four wild cards, we didn’t get entry. The following day we all soaked some sun in at South Lake Tahoe before our preference for speed separated us back into two riding groups.

Sid and I, a couple of nights and a few hundred kilometers later, caught up with five of the other blokes from Down Under. The distance it took to ride from Jackpot, Nevada to Idaho Falls, Idaho united us as the Magnificent Seven. The difference in riding styles, not

attitudes, found Sid and I separating from the pack of riders.

Despite riding speeds, long distances, and the challenges of group travel, all of the Down Under Travellers, Sid, and I will meet up officially and concretely for the last three days of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. By the time my words are read, the smoke will just be thinning out from the festivities in South Dakota.

The road has been long, twisting, hot, wet, cold, low, and high for Sid and I. We’ve seen the ocean and countless rivers and lakes.

Our bikes have stopped in front of crab shacks on the coast and cut through the smoke of California’s wild fires. We exchanged

metaphorical punches with grime of Reno and have kept the bikes running reasonably well all along the way.

The old ’81 Suzuki GS1000G I got up and running for Sid is still humping along. Its left front shock is leaking, the faring rattles in the wind, the lock on the fuel cap had to be busted apart with a screw driver, the speedo cable snapped, the carburettors have overnight external leaks, the left exhaust spews blue smoke upon the first morning start up, the left mirror is always loose, and the engine burns more oil than it does gas; but Sid’s Suzuki is still screaming towards Sturgis — and my Harley is running just fine.

Wildrose leader Brian Jean and Jason Nixon, MLA for Rimbey, Sundre and Rocky Mountain House riding spent last Wednesday chatting with locals, listening to their concerns and promoting the party’s own goals and objectives.

“The goal of this tour was to get Brian out to meet Albertans,” said Nixon, noting the time frame of election campaign didn’t give him the opportunity to actually hobnob with Joe public.

Rimbey was the first stop for Jean and Nixon and they spent some time at the Empress Theatre Emporium chatting with the small crowd who dropped by.

“We let the group drive the conversation and it seemed there was a lot of talk concerning the economy, jobs, the petroleum industry and the minimum wage increase proposal,” said Nixon.

He said the fact that there are wooden pipes connecting some of the town’s infrastructure in Rimbey was brought to light.

Nixon noted Rimbey does have a unique problem regarding the wooden pipes,

but stable government funding for infrastructure was a concern throughout the riding.

“We need to remove politics from infrastructure and come up with long term predictable funding so municipalities can plan more than six months ahead,’ he said.

Nixon noted the 10/10 plan Wildrose is proposing, which would see 10 per cent of resource revenue and 10 per cent of tax revenue going to municipalities, is Wildrose’s solution to this problem.

He said people are concerned about NDP’s proposal to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, adding Wildrose is opposed to this proposal.

“Statistics are very clear it is not going to help people below the poverty line,” he said. “Small businesses are the backbone of our communities and the increase clearly shows this will cause problems for small businesses.”

Jean and Nixon then traveled to Sundre and finally to Rocky Mountain House where they took part in a barbecue held in the historical park.

Opposition leader reacts to byelection announcement EDMONTON: Wildrose Official Opposition leader Brian Jean reacted today with disappointment to the snap byelection that has been called for the riding of Calgary-Foothills.

“The NDP government has known for months that the Wildrose nomination for Calgary-Foothills was set for August 15,” Jean said.

“On top of that, doubling down on elections while a federal campaign is underway will only add to voter fatigue and a lower turnout.”

In the first short months of an NDP government, the NDP have hammered Albertans and their businesses by going on a debt stampede, reopening royalty reviews and climate change policy and hiking personal and business taxes, all with oil at under 50 dollars a barrel.

“I have confidence that the NDP record will speak for itself during this byelection campaign, and voters will react accordingly,” Jean said. “Wildrose will be ready with a candidate to take on the NDP on issues that matter to the people of Calgary-Foothills.”

RCMP lay charges: It has been said before, but apparently the message has not gotten through to everyone. If you break the law and come to Rimbey, you will get caught. In addition to the dedicated and alert Mounties, Rimbey and area benefits from active watchful civilian groups such as the Rimbey & District Crime Watch Association, Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol, and Rimbey Community Wellness group to mention a few. With the help of concerned citizens, and sometimes with the help of the criminals themselves, the Rimbey RCMP were able to identify, arrest and charge a number of people.

RCMP alerted: One individual alerted the RCMP of a suspicious vehicle parked on a lease site not far from Rimbey.

it out and found a male fast asleep in the back of the truck, which turned out to have been stolen out of Medicine Hat earlier that same day. Sleeping beauty awoke with a start and rubbed his eyes to get the fuzz out. But when he looked again, the fuzz was still there, but now he was seeing double because the Mountie had called for backup.

Upon being informed that he was under arrest for possession of a stolen vehicle, the 34-year-old male quickly jumped into the front seat, turned on the ignition and put the truck in gear in an attempt to flee.

However, he was overpowered and pulled out of the truck where he continued to resist his arrest. After a brief wrestle in the grass, he realized that it was over.

"How did you find me?" he asked repeatedly. He could not grasp how he got caught only five hours after stealing the truck from Medicine Hat. I checked on Google maps. It’s a four and a half hour drive from Medicine Hat to Rimbey.

The poor guy only got 30 minutes of sleep. With two warrants and a combined total of eight charges from Medicine Hat and Rimbey, he has no reason to worry about a place to sleep for a while.

Tell the truth: A traffic stop for a broken headlight led to the arrest of three occupants. The 24-yearold driver from Ponoka was restricted to drive a vehicle with an alcoholsensing device. The officer did not see a “blow box”, but he did observe some other items of interest.

The driver was charged with driving while disqualified. His 21-year-old passenger from Red Deer did not want to give the investigating officer his name because he did not want to go back to jail. Lying about his identity was

only one of the mistakes he made that night. He also had drug paraphernalia and a weapon on him, and he was out past his courtimposed curfew.

For someone who does not want to go back to jail, this young man was going about it all wrong.

Suspects sought in an armed robbery in community of Bentley Sylvan Lake RCMP are requesting the public assistance in identifying three males responsible for a recent armed robbery in the community of Bentley.

On July 31 at 7:36 p.m. three unidentified males met a 41 year-old man outside the Piccolo Pizza restaurant in Bentley with plans to purchase a Lincoln Navigator. One of three male suspects produced a handgun and pointed it at the owner of the vehicle.

The three unidentified

suspects then fled the area in an 1997 -2000 Chev Pick up truck with a flat black spray painted finish.

The suspects are described as Caucasian males five feet ten inches to six feet in height and of medium build. They were wearing black clothing.

Rimbey sisters compete in Kids Death Race

For a couple of Rimbey sisters the August long weekend was a little less than relaxing, proving to be more of a test of physical strength and endurance.

The girls, Keyanna Levie, 14, and her 11-year-old sister Darienn competed in the five kilometer Kids Canadian Death Race held in Grande Cache, finishing first and sixth respectively for their gender in their age category.

Now that the race is over, both girls reflect back on the weekend as great fun and a chance to prove their strength as long distance runners.

As a first place finisher, Keyanna, who finished the race with a time of 34.48 minutes, has definitely earned bragging rights.

However, the teen is quite humble about her win.

“I like running,” she said simply. “I always have.”

She said she was pleased to come in first, but noted the runner who came in second was only 14 seconds behind her.

“I thought the other kid was going to

win,” she said. “I was pretty happy to find out I did.”

As part of an endurance test for the run, the youngsters are required to run up a huge hill which Keyanna said is very difficult.

“The hill was hard, but I knew I had to keep going.”

Her sister Darienn agreed the hill was a major obstacle.

“That hills throws everybody off.”

Darienn said she hadn’t done a lot of running to prepare for the race, but spent lots of hours jumping on her trampoline, bike riding and playing with her dog, Molly.

“Next year I’m going to train harder,” she said.

This is the third year the girls have competed in the Kids Death Race. Last year, Keyanna came in second and Darienn placed seventh.

The girls’ mother, Kerry said she and her husband, Robert run Spartan races and encourage their girls to participate in the sport of running.

“They like to run and we totally promote that,” she said.

Water fun: Josh Toews and his daughter Evalyn enjoy the waterslide at Rimbey Aquatic Centre on the long weekend. The pool was a busy place last weekend as temperatures soared and people were looking for a place to cool off.

Darienne Levie finished sixth in the race.
