WELCOME TO THE 2015 COMOX AIR SHOW Message from the Mayor of Courtenay

Message from the Wing Commander

On Saturday August 15th 19 Wing Comox will open it’s doors to the community and say thank you for all the support you have shown us over the year and for many years. Saluting the Community We Serve, is the 2015 theme for the 2015 Armed Forces Day (AFD) and the Comox Air Show – an extension of the goodwill shared among the Comox Valley residents, businesses, service providers and the defence community. With an exciting lineup of modern military aircraft, vintage warbirds and dynamic civilian aerobatic performers, this will be an aviation extravaganza to remember. While visiting the Wing, be sure to meet with the men and women in uniform who proudly represent the Canadian Armed Forces. Learn who they are and what they do, and become inspired just as we have by those who served before us. We would like to take the time to thank all our many generous sponsors who, with their incredible support, have allowed us to deliver a high-caliber event that offers something exciting for fans of all ages. On behalf of Mr. Terry Chester, AFD Director, the AFD Board of Directors, and members of the 19 Wing Defence Team, we wish you a safe and memorable Air Show Day!

The Comox Air Show attracts visitors to our area from across Vancouver Island and beyond. 19 Wing Comox is an integral part of our community, and it is always a thrill to see some of their work and equipment up close, along with other military and private aircraft from around the world. We are so pleased that the airshow is happening during the City of Courtenay’s Centennial year. I wish the Comox Air Show organizers and volunteers all the best for a successful event. Larry Jangula, Mayor, Ciry of Courtenay

ANNOUNCERS

NATIONAL ANTHEM H2A2 : Hafeli & Hildebrandt Airshow Announcers

Entertain and Inform is their goal and from the moment the gates open to the final minute of the show this dynamic pair will keep the show alive and the spectators satisfied. Meet this year’s show announcers Roy Hafeli and Ken Hildebrandt of H2A2. Together they provide a unique announcing package that is engaging, informative, full of aviation trivia, and often theatrical to match their vibrant personalities. Not only do they have the voice for radio, they have the passion to back them up!

Unique to the 19 Wing Armed Forces Day and to the Comox Valley is the the Canadian Military Wives Choir. The choir formed in January 2015 on the initiative of Brenda Dunne who had a passion to spread the Military Wives Choir movement to the choralrich Comox Valley. Led by Musical Director Wendy Nixon Stothert, the CMWC Comox is the second of its kind in Canada — formed only eighteen months after the first Canadian Military Wives Choir opened its doors in Ottawa. Today, there are now more than eighty choirs worldwide following the notoriety of the first of its kind in the UK.

Enjoy the Comox Air Show – celebrate 72 years of Canadian Air Force history!

Canadian Military Wives Choirs are all female choirs, made up of members who are closely associated with the Canadian Armed Forces either through marriage/family rela-

tionship or employment. This talented group of energetic ladies will perform the National Anthem at the Opening Ceremonies of the Comox Air Show.

MILITARY PERFORMERS 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron - CP-140 Aurora

Canada’s only strategic maritime surveillance aircraft, the CP-140 Aurora patrols our nations coastlines, safeguarding our waters from foreign threat. On the west coast, 407 Long Range Patrol (LRP) Squadron is home to a fleet of five Aurora aircraft. Today, the Squadron plays a pivotal role in protecting the safety and security of Canadians both at home and abroad. Airmen and airwomen based at 407 Squadron have been active in Afghanistan, patrolled the skies over Libya and most recently over Iraq where one of in 19 Wing’s own Aurora recently carried out an Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance role. With its 17-hour endurance and 9266 km range, the Aurora is ideal for a variety of operations. Crews will spend long hours on surveillance patrols involving illegal fishing, migrant and drug smuggling, and polluting along the coastline. They can also per-

form search and rescue (SAR) missions using air-droppable survival pods and support other governmental agencies such as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. In recent years, they have detected and gathered evidence against over a dozen suspected driftnet vessels in support of Canada’s commitment to enforcing the United Nations moratorium on high-seas driftnet fishing.

Responsible for a region of approximately 920,000 square kilometers from British Columbia to the Yukon and 560,000 square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean extending to approximately 600 nautical miles offshore, 442 T&R Squadron employs a fleet of six CC-115 Buffalo aircraft and five CH-149 Cormorant helicopters to answer the call.

CC-115 Buffalo One of Canada’s primary search and rescue (SAR) aircraft based solely out of 19 Wing Comox is the CC-115 Buffalo. Capable of operating in almost any weather, the agile Buffalo can maneouver on even the most rugged terrain and in areas as small as a soccer field. The short take-off and landing (STOL) capability makes the Buffalo the ideal platform for BC’s mountainous terrain.

MILITARY DEMONSTRATION TEAMS

Canadian Forces Snowbirds Canada’s famed Air Demonstration team, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, is comprised of dedicated pilots and technicians working together as a team to bring thrilling performances to the North American public. Serving as Canadian ambassadors, the Snowbirds demonstrate excellence and professionalism inherent of the women and men of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

This year, the Snowbirds, led by Major Patrick Gobeil of 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, 15 Wing Moose Jaw, will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the courageous airmen and ground crew who sacriďŹ ced so much during a period of just over three months while the Battle was waged between July and October 1940. The aircraft own by the Snowbirds is the nimble Tutor, a RCAF icon. Originally pro-

cured in the mid-1960s to train student pilots, today, the Tutor is own primarily by the Snowbirds. It also serves as a test aircraft at the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE) in Cold Lake, Alberta. The Snowbirds, perform the nine-ship close formation ying routine with a slightly modiďŹ ed Tutor, which features a more robust engine to enhance performance during low-level aerobatic ying.

PERFORMERS Yak Duo

Super Dave Mathieson

The Granleys are a family steeped in a tradition of aviation - military and civilian - giving them the edge on aerial performance, a team who know how to deliver. A father-son team like no other, Bud and Ross Granley’s Yak Duo is attention –grabbing. With a Yak-55 renowned for aerobatics and a Yak18T once popular to Russian aviators, this airborne duet is tumbling and dynamic - an aerial spectacle performed by two seasoned airshow professionals.

Super Dave Mathieson is top-notch in the airshow circuit performing in the world’s most advanced aerobatic aircraft, the MX2. With more than 27 years of aviation experience, Dave’s passion first took flight as a young teenager in the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program. Today, Dave is centrally featured on Discovery Channel’s AIRSHOW now in its second season. His MX2 is designed to pull 16Gs, has an incredible roll rate of 500 degrees per second and is powered by a 380HP motor giving Dave the ability to take the aircraft to a top speed of 300 MPH. It will be a thrilling, dare-devilish and pure adrenaline pumping performance for audiences to enjoy.

Manfred Radius

Anna Serbinenko, Sky Dancer

Manfred Radius is highly accomplished in international aerobatic gliding competitions earning him numerous accolades all over the world. His eloquent and discreet routine in his H-101 ‘Salto” glider replaces the thundering roar of engines but the manoeuvres are anything but docile. The Salto glider is build to impress. Weighing only 420 pounds when empty, this aerobatic sailplane is designed to withstand the same g-loadings as modern fighter jets thus allowing Manfred to accomplish amazing feats of aerobatics.

Born in Ukraine, Anna Serbinenko spent several years living in Switzerland, Germany, and Brazil, before moving to Canada in 2008. Ten days after arriving, she took her first flight lesson - a fateful day that sparked a passion in her, and changed the course of her life. Anna Serbinenko pilots her Super Decathlon in a graceful routine set to classical music. Her passion for flight extends into her role as a flying instructor with Canadian Flight Centre, Boundary Bay. Anna is also a doctor in financial mathematics, a programmer and a university professor.

Performing in the beloved advanced trainer, Dave and Drew Watson proudly showcase RCAF history to audiences across the nation in their North American Harvard. The Harvard aircraft has flown in Canadian hands as an advanced trainer from the Second World War up until the mid 1960’s when it was replaced by the CT-114 Tutor.
