Deputy Fire Chief Pearse said there were only minor injuries and no one else was in the vehicle involved in the accident. The Honda Accord is believed to have sideswiped a panel truck prior to crashing into the corner of the building. The Oaks sustained damage to the window

at the entrance and was closed to customers until the mess could be cleaned up. Emergency personnel were assessing the woman at the scene. Oak Bay Police are continuing to investigate. editor@oakbaynews.com

The value of single family homes in Oak Bay jumped in value this July, up almost $60,000 on average from the same time last year. According to the Multiple Listing Service Home Price Index benchmark value, the average value this year was $829,600 compared to $772,700 last July. Among Greater Victoria’s 13 municipalities, the Highlands recorded the highest average value for single family homes in July at $919,500. There were 28 single family residence sales in Oak Bay for a total value of $29,951,375. Five condos sold as did two townhouses. On Aug. 4, the Victoria Real Estate Board released its report on real estate activity in the Victoria area for July. A total of 796 properties sold in the Victoria Real Estate Board region this July, compared to the 681 properties sold in the same month last year. “We’ve certainly seen the busy spring market continue into the summer months,” Victoria Real Estate Board President Guy Crozier says. “The theme of declining listings and increased sales volume is consistent through July, and we’re seeing the market go through its typical summer cycle. Sales dropped a little from the spring as we would expect, but are still up a very healthy 16.9 per cent over last year.”

Vintage car show ready to roll on the avenue Auto enthusiasts prepare for the Oak Bay Collector Car Festival Devon MacKenzie News contributor

For car enthusiasts, the chance to see hundreds of cars lining Oak Bay Avenue only happens once a year. This year, that day falls on Sunday, Aug. 9 when the Oak Bay Collector Car Festival takes to the streets. The open show (meaning any make, year model of car participate) has drawn an estimated 15,000 people to the avenue every year for the last 15 years. “I remember that first year, I was so nervous that

no one would show up and we ended up having thousands of people through,” laughed Ken Agate, the show’s coordinator. “The thing is with an open show is that it draws a wider crowd,” he added, saying the focus of the show is the cars but what really makes the experience is hearing the stories shared between car enthusiasts. “It’s the stories that really make the experience. Some restorations have amazing stories behind them and some cars are so unique,” he said. “We welcome any-

one – perfect restorations, works in progress, less than perfects, we love having them all. That’s the beauty of this show.” Apart from the cars, he continued, freshly barbecued build-your-own prime rib burgers ($6), live music (Virtual Elvis from 12 to 3 p.m.) and the local shopping are also all draws to the major event. “The show itself is a great contribution to the community,” he said. “It benefits local business, and this year for the first time ever it will feature local art and artist demonstrations chosen by Barbara Adams, the Oak Bay Arts Laureate, as part of Arts and Culture Week in

Oak Bay,” Agate noted. Car placements start at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9 and the show opens at 8 a.m. “The nice part about the show is that there is no preregistration required, so it’s very casual. People can just show up on the day of and pay the entry fee of $15. This year we will have spots for about 300 cars on the Avenue,” Agate said. For an auto aficionado like Don Hutton, the open show provides a more casual atmosphere to show his rare, mint-restored 1958 Cadillac Eldorado. “The Oak Bay show is a great show because it attracts so many different

car enthusiasts,” Hutton said. His ’58 Eldorado, which took almost eight years to restore, recently won a handful of awards, including Best In Show (non-member) at the Annual Vintage Cadillac Car Show at Fort Rodd Hill. Hutton’s hunt for an Eldorado to restore began many years ago, and was realized when he located one in South Carolina. “It was difficult to find one because of their rarity,” he said, noting that there were only 815 1958 Eldorado Biarritz made. “There’s definitely not that many of them out there now,” he said.

The restoration work, which was done from the bottom up and encompassed every part, including nuts and bolts, was done by Todd Rayner. “I did the parts sourcing for the restoration which was challenging, but it turned out better than I could have imagined. Of course, any car enthusiast knows a project is never really done,” he laughed. The Oak Bay Collector Car Festival on Sunday, Aug. 9 begins at 8 a.m. in Oak Bay Village and runs until 3:30 p.m. Registration and vehicle placement start at 7:30 a.m. For more information on the show, see oakbay.ca.

Uplands Campus hosts outdoor training for kids SD61 contracts local adventure school to help students get a leg-up Christine van Reeuwyk Oak Bay News

Westcoast Adventure College and the Greater Victoria School District offer a new summer course to give kids a jump on outdoor guiding careers. Students in the inaugural course are studying at the Uplands Campus in Oak Bay, home to SD61’s Victoria International High School Programs’ administrative offices and multiple other programs. “We’re running a one-month program for students,” said Oak Bay’s Phil Foster, who co-owns Westcoast Adventure College with Scot Taylor. Students earn eight credits, divvied between the classroom portion and the following work experience. “Final evaluation is running a hike as if they are a guide,” Foster said. Students will also prepare resumés and

participate in job interviews to get the work experience positions that complete the summer program. “I was blown away by the kids,” Foster said, after sitting in on some of the entrance interviews. Passion for environment was strong in the 11 selected for the inaugural summer program. Among them are a pair of Brentwood Bay teens, Finn Steiner, 15, and Reid Brady, 18. “It’s a small group and it’s great,” said Steiner. “It’s more personable, they can really give you feedback at the end of the day.” Brady graduated from Stelly’s secondary in June, so the credits aren’t important, but the course looks good on a resumé, and he’s getting certified in courses such as first aid. “[First aid] is something you don’t even think about needing [as a guide],” Brady said. Steiner enters Grade 10 this fall at Stelly’s and hopes to graduate early and attend the Westcoast Adventure College. “I’ve been looking at guiding for a career,”

said Steiner. “I saw this as a summer program that could get my foot in the door.” Both find the course has exceeded expectations. It covers critical information and certification including first aid, team building and applied communication skills. “There’s a really wide variety of things you learn. Every day we’ve been doing something new and unique,” Steiner said. “The second half of the program is work experience, which is the only way to get into the business.” Foster taught his first course in 1966. Before opening the college, he helped develop the BC Adventure Tourism program which he also taught at Camosun College. He worked with First Nations, Parks Canada and Malaspina University College to develop the Guardian Training Program. He sources contacts made over the years to garner leading-edge work experience placement for students at both the Westcoast Adventure College and the new high school program. OUR VIEW

Art inspires life, and life inspires art Ahhh... summer in Oak Bay. It isn’t just about the glorious weather we have been experiencing, it’s about the myriad events taking place on the streets, studios and galleries in Oak Bay. Arts and culture play an important role in the life of this community. The very ambiance leads people to see the beauty all around, and the genteel lifestyle afforded to those who inhabit Oak Bay contribute immensely to the quality of life. During Oak Bay’s Arts and Culture Festival seemingly random sculptures and public art festoon the Avenue, thereby creating a playful addition to the community. The week and beyond will bring music, gallery walks, culinary arts, car festivals and classic films to various venues in Oak Bay culminating in the Bowker Creek Brush UP art show and sale on Aug. 16. All of these events point to how life and art are intertwined in our daily lives. Most of us may not have a Picasso or a Rodin sculpture gracing our home, but we do have the whimsical sculptures along the Avenue to enjoy and amazing art in the galleries, music in the park and artisans at the night market. Art is one of those things which can be taken for granted but when it is not around, the world does become a less joyous place. There is art in everything, it’s about more than fine art and music. It is about the appreciation for the talents of those who try and make our world a prettier and more enjoyable place. It’s about the time spent on doing something well, whether it is fixing up an old classic car to its former glory or growing the most amazing flowers. Art isn’t just for a week or two in the summer, it’s something that needs to be appreciated year round. That means bums in the seats for concerts, eyes on the paintings and sculptures at art shows and participation in making this world a more beautiful place. Let’s appreciate the care and attention paid to those small and wonderful things in our neighbourhoods, those tiny often unnoticed things like a beautiful bouquet of flowers or a child’s painting on someone’s fridge. Art is what makes us cultured and open minded, happy and reflective. It’s a necessity, not a frivolity. Bring it on! What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@oakbaynews.com. Only intensive cull will reduce deer numbers Re: Deer a shared responsibility, (July 31). I would like to add some comments, as a biologist, to the contrasting proposals to manage the blacktail deer population in Oak Bay. The number of deer in any region will reach a rough equilibrium dependent on the balance between the amount of browse available and the level of predation. In other words the more vegetation the greater the number of fawns born, and the more deer to consume the more the carnivores can reproduce. The two groups balance out, usually with a time lag. In the case of Oak Bay two observations apply: 1. We have eliminated natural predators, and the automobile is an inefficient substitute. 2. Left alone the deer population will continue to

expand towards the limit set by the food supply. The trap-and-kill method of management employed briefly last winter could certainly reduce the deer population. But since deer evolved to compensate for predation the reduction will be temporary. More fawns will be born and adults will move in from adjacent regions. Only an intensively applied cull over several

years could effectively reduce deer numbers. Given the political opposition to deer culls this is not practical. An alternative to killing animals that has been suggested is to treat does with a contraceptive. This will not reduce the number of deer but will result in fewer fawns. The treated does will eventually die of old age and their place and that of their

never-born offspring will be taken by the migration of deer into Oak Bay. The rule is: if there is food they will come. The use of a contraceptive will not reduce the deer population in Oak Bay and thus seems pointless. The only way in which contraception could work would be to prevent the movement of deer into the municipality. Given the experience of the Australians in analogous circumstances with a rabbitproof fence (but rabbits cannot jump an 8ft fence) I do not give much credence to isolating Oak Bay from outside deer which would be required. This is merely the opinion of a scientist. Others are entitled to their own opinions. Joe Harvey Oak Bay

South African firefighters train in B.C. As forest firefighters from Ontario and Australia head home home, a group of 25 firefighters from South Africa have arrived in B.C. to assist and train with crews still busy with 140 fires. Forests Minister Steve Thomson said the South Africans were to arrive in Abbotsford this week for orientation, after training with crews in Alberta. They are paired with B.C. firefighters to continue training to internationals standards, as they were doing in Alberta.

About 150 other visiting firefighters, mostly from Ontario and Australia, are expected to have headed home by Aug. 11. Thomson said there were 31 new fire starts over the B.C. After unsettled weather and thunderstorms across B.C., a high pressure ridge was expected to rebuild by

Thursday, bringing more temperatures in the upper 20s by the weekend.

B.C. wants climate input The first phase of public consultation for B.C.’s “Climate Leadership Plan” ends Aug. 17. Participants are asked to complete an online survey at engage. gov.bc.ca/climateleadership to choose their priorities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Participants are

asked to assign a point value to choices such as minimizing travel in community planning, using regulations and incentives to encourage energy efficiency and clean technology, and requiring new greenhouse gas sources to adhere to B..C.’s climate targets. The survey also asks if the B.C. government should “expand the use of carbon pricing to stimulate business and consumer decisions that reduce emissions.” The province has committed to hold its carbon tax on fuels at

A victorious Evan Carey, who grew up in Oak Bay and still lives here, waves the flag.

Golden games for Evan Carey Jim Zeeben

Oak Bay News

Before Evan Carey’s day turned to gold, it began as had so many mornings before. There was a routine, training on a stationary bike and mobility exercises to loosen up. But when the Oak Bay resident and his teammates on the men’s national sprint team entered the Cisco Pan Am Games Velodrome in Toronto, the crowd was like nothing Carey had ever experienced. He remembers feeling awestruck by the huge gathering of Canadians and then, for a few minutes, nothing. When the countdown timer started, Carey’s elite training kicked in and he readied himself to do the one thing he can do better than anyone else in the country. Sprint team cyclists start off locked in a mechanical gate that springs open when the countdown reaches zero. Racers take off like thoroughbreds, with Carey designated as the lead racer. From zero to 65km/h, he needs to get to full speed in 250 metres before he can yield to his teammates who take turns on the final two laps. “I do one lap as fast as I can, and then I get out of the way, Carey said. Fellow Canadians Hugo Barette and Joseph Veloce managed to keep the pace, winning gold and setting a new Canadian record in the process.

The trio’s time of 44.241 was almost one second faster than the other finalists from Venezuela. In the moment of victory, the roar of the crowd returned “as soon as we came back to our senses,â€? Carey said. “Nothing I’ve done compared to how the Pan Am Games felt,â€? Carey said. “To be competing in a massive, multi-sport event in front of your home crowd ‌ that was the extra (push) we needed.â€? The 21-year-old was born and raised here, graduating from Oak Bay High in 2012. He credits his coaches in the community with teaching him how to take his talents to another level. “They really instil that sports aren’t just about fitness,â€? Carey said. “If you are dedicated, (sports) can also take you to places you wouldn’t go otherwise.â€? A former track star, Carey made the switch to competitive cycling at the age of 18. The sport has already allowed him to travel and compete in Europe the Caribbean and South America. Carey is set to begin his second year studying business at Camosun College this fall while continuing to race throughout the winter cycling circuit. He’s off to Los Angeles to train for the Pan American Continental Track Championship in Santiago, Chile, Sept. 1-6. editor@oakbaynews.com

The centre says 35 cases of a bacterial infection called Vibrio parahaemolyticus have been reported in June and July – an unprecedented number. Most people got sick from eating raw B.C. oysters served in restaurants, although some cases involved oysters that were self-harvested or bought at retail outlets. The bacteria occurs naturally in shellfish like oysters, clams, mussels, scallops and cockles and their concentrations rise in the summer months when water temperatures get warmer. People can get sick when contaminated shellfish are eaten raw or undercooked. Diarrhea is the most common symptom from infection, but nausea, vomiting, fever, headache and bloody stools can also result. Symptoms last three days to a week and don’t usually require treatment. The BCCDC advises consumers to eat only cooked shellfish to destroy the bacteria and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal illness.

A Natural Way to Get Your Health Back on Track

H

aving recently completed my 20th workout session at Vibes Oak Bay, I would like to share my experience of how it all began. It started with Oak Bay Vibes One Week Free Trial, when I set a goal to improve my golf score and was told exercise is critical to achieving success. My flexibility and core strength has dramatically improved since then. I get 10 yards more per club and had to ‘recalibrate’ my swing to suit my new found strength and flexibility. I participate in many outdoor activities but my core strength was pathetic. My increased muscle tone is most noticeable in my upper body and core. Best of all the workouts are low impact. My stomach was ballooning into embarrassment: Twenty sessions hasn’t given me a six-pack – yet. But, the ‘keg’ is down by about five inches! I won a certificate to Vibes Oak Bay. The cynic in me made me hesitate. The cynic in me thought I am going to get sucked into another membership nightmare. No membership nightmare at Vibes. I chose a punch card to use only when I attend. Vibes has payment options, including variable membership terms. No automatic renewal, no pressure. I don’t know anything about working out. Where to start? What to do? I was pleasantly surprised to learn there is a highly trained instructor to guide me through my workout, customized to my ability and specific needs. A workout that makes you sweat, should last hours. Vibes only lasts 15 minutes – half-hour.

BEFORE

with Dr. Fei Yang (Traditional Chinese Medicine)

• A detailed TCM diagnosis gives a different perspective of one’s general health • Evaluation of the body’s nutritional level, acid and alkaline balance, etc • Discovery of dietary issues, emotional stress • Natural Medicine ingredients throughout the healing process • Traditional Acupuncture

AFTER

What good is it to work out in that little time? I don’t have hours to spend (I’d rather golf). I am “toast”, in a full sweat after a half-hour workout. And what’s with the vibrating machine? Sounds gimmicky! NASA and professional sport teams use body vibration machines. Their experience and evidence support Vibes’ claims. Just a couple sessions convinced me that the vibrations make the body work out much faster and more efficiently. Why not go to a gym, pool or do something at home? An appointment at Vibes is a commitment. It’s on my calendar, therefore it happens. I am not sure I can afford this. I was surprised at the price per session. The cost is very reasonable compared to alternatives, especially considering the personal trainer benefit. I have to drive to Oak Bay from Broadmead. That’s a long way to go for a work out. Well worth the (short) trip!

adorned the hood, roof of and rear of the hatchback. back. Normally, I’d consider der this overkill and highly y unnecessary. But it someomee how worked really well ell with this model. It’s not for everyone e but that’s the beauty of the he Fiats. There are so many any ways in which you can an personalize them (there are 15 exterior colours to choose hoose from, not to mention countless ways in which hich you can dress them up), and unless you’re getting tting a black-on-black vehicle, chances are, you might not see another like it in your area. Another beauty of this vehicle is its versatility. Sure, it’s small but it actually can do a lot with what it has been given. For example, there’s room for four inside, as well as 269

litres of trunk space. Kick out your rear passengers, fold down the seats, and you have even more space with which to work. So much so that I was able to fit my road bicycle inside. Okay, I had to take off the front wheel, but I have been in coupes much bigger than the 500 and didn’t have the same luxury. Then there’s the engine.

Its humble 135 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque being produced from its 1.4L, MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder might look mediocre on paper, but it brings this car to life. And of the three available engines offered, the base, naturally aspirated 1.4L MultiAir, the Turbo, or

the Turbo from the Abarth version (160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque), the 500 Turbo (middle child of engines) is my top pick. It is spirited, peppy and makes driving fun. It’s enough horsepower to play with, but not enough to get into too much trouble. PLEASE SEE: Fiat 500, Page A12

Adding to the fun factor is the introduction of an all-new Aisin heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission. A manual lover to the core, I quite liked the new addition to the fold. It also took the edge off in urban commuting. And for the times when you want a little more gusto, there’s a “Sport” mode. You’ll find this magical button on the instrument panel. What it does is change the throttle mapping for improved engine responsiveness. While I love the car as a whole, I still have a couple of quibbles with it. The instrument panel (with the push buttons and all) looks archaic and is a headache to work with. Furthermore, the optional navigation also sits atop the dash,

which eats up prime real estate when it comes to forward visibility. And it looks misplaced. But for the reasons I wrestle with the Fiat 500 Turbo, there are plenty more favourable features that put me at ease. The optional Beats stereo system sounds great in the cabin, the leatherwrapped sport steering wheel and shift knob feel nice between my fingers and the optional red leather seats make the interior pop. Then there’s the drivability. I love its competency in corners. It handles much like a decked out gokart but doesn’t give you the same kinds of aches and pains. I guess it’s no surprise why fellow Fiat 500 drivers wave at others. They’re excited about their car and

Time to get kids back into routine for school Three tips to get your kids back into a routine

homework every day and as have a calendar on the fridge with assignment due dates and upcoming presentations. “Check with your child and teacher about what homework is due,” Roberts suggests. “The school work and practicing for tests, the preparation for school activities becomes a central focal point for the family … it’s people that don’t prioritize education where I think children can be at a real disadvantage.”

Kendra Wong Victoria News

It’s that time of year again. In a few weeks, thousands of kids on Vancouver Island will leave behind the dog days of summer to head back to the classroom for another school year. But those summer months of watching TV, playing video games and hanging out at the mall have jostled students out of their regular school routine. “September is the opportunity for a family to hit the reset button, to get all of the habits in place that are going to allow for the most productive and positive school year,” says Dr. Jillian Roberts, a registered psychologist and an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Victoria. “So you’re getting into the habit of getting out of bed at a certain time, having breakfast at a certain time, you’re coming home from school you’re unloading your backpack, you’re getting your homework out … As a parent, you have to take the lead role in getting things set up to promote success in your child.” Roberts, the author of a series of books titled Just Enough about sup-

Kids need routine to get back into the swing of things before the new school year begins. porting the social and emotional development of children out this fall, says it’s important to establish a good routine early in the year. Parents should also think about having a family meeting a week or two before school begins to talk about the goals and activities children want to participate in this year. “Instead of making it a hassle or an obligation, you turn it into a positive to have really wonderful family times together,” says Roberts. “When parents show children

how to be organized, show children how to think and plan head, that children only need to be shown one or two years once it becomes internalized and they do it themselves.” Here are few tips for getting students out of their summer slump and back into learning:

“Make sure the mornings go well and you can start your day off in the best possible mood,” says Roberts, adding it will help kids plan ahead, think about what they need for the day and be organized. “You don’t want your mornings to get started off rushed and hurried and frenzied and set the kids off for a bad day because their morning was stressed.”

Be active in a child’s social life — be involved in the school community, sign children up for extracurricular activities at the school or invite other families over for barbecues or dinners. “Shy children or children beginning at a new school might not yet have the skills to develop the kinds of friendships that will be good for them,” Roberts says. “Make it easy for a child to invite a friend to do something. If a parent buys an extra ticket to a hockey game, they can say to their child ‘invite a friend to bring to the game’. It gives the child a reason or purpose to reach out when they might be shy to do so.” kendra.wong@vicnews.com

Jo-Anne McIntyre Harris April 15, 1951 ~ July 10, 2014 Jo-Anne McIntyre Harris 63, of Oak Bay, B.C., passed away on July 10, 2014 after a long courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. She was born to Harold and Dora (Dolly) McIntyre on April 15, 1951 in Victoria. She graduated from Oak Bay High School in 1969 and three years later received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of Victoria. She also attended Emily Carr School of Art in Vancouver on scholarship. She taught primary school, special education, and computers in the Okanagan (mostly in Kelowna), and later in Victoria. She was passionate about teaching her students to a high standard, instilling enjoyment and a love for learning. She married Stephen J. Harris on June 25th, 1983 and their daughter Megan was born on August 6th, 1984. A modern Renaissance person, she expressed herself through fine arts, crafts, computer development, house design, and construction in which she taught herself. She was an active professional and a member of the B.C. Provincial Child’s Rights Committee. She also engaged in several community activities including Amnesty International, Scouts, and was a figure skating coach. She had a zest for active sports and enjoyed camping, hiking, skating, and horseback riding. Jo-Anne was a quiet yet active person as a human rights activist, in the community and in daily life. Her greatest joy was doing family activities and working as a team with others included development of educational learning materials for school curriculums. To those who knew Jo-Anne, she was known as being a kind, caring and humane person. Jo-Anne will be missed by her husband Stephen; Daughter Megan (and husband Marc Jacobson); Stephen’s children; David and Beth Harris, and grandson, Charles; Sister Glenna Gillan; nephew Andrew. The family would like to especially thank Dr. Derek Carroll and the staff and volunteers (including Sally McAuley) at Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital for their unwavering compassion and care throughout the years. We are forever grateful for the love and care they gave her. Donations in Jo-Anne’s memory can be made to Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital or the MS Society. A private unveiling of a memorial plaque on the Harris family picnic table at Cattle Point, Oak Bay will take place this summer. “Adieu ma chĂŠrie.â€?

Control your clutter before you move Getting ready to move? Bringing in a professional can help you decide what to leave behind

A little preparation can help save time, money and a few headaches when planning for a move. Saija Tissari (left) of Ducks in a Row Organizing, and Christa Bunton prepare for Bunton’s move to Oak Bay.

Jennifer Blyth Black Press

After 21 years in her Ten Mile Point home, Christa Bunton is preparing to make a move to Oak Bay. Drawn by the community’s walkability and easy access to just about everything she needs, not to mention the community appeal, in deciding to move, Bunton was looking ahead to a time when her current home up a steep hill might no longer be accessible. “If I find I can’t drive anymore I would feel marooned up there without a car, and I felt I should make the move when I have all the time and no pressure,” she reflects. “Oak Bay is a community that on a small scale provides you with everything that you need or might need, from clothing stores to grocery stores. It’s also architecturally attractive.”

Jennifer Blyth /Oak Bay News

With accessibility in mind, Bunton is looking for a home with a level, or almost level, entry and a smaller garden to care for within six blocks or so of the village. Her current home sold quickly and Bunton is fortunate to have family property on Salt Spring to call home while she awaits the perfect Oak Bay location.

In the meantime, however, as she prepares to move and put many things in temporary storage, it was time to call in the services of Saija Tissari, of Ducks in a Row Organizing and a member of the Professional Organizers of Canada. Tissari, who helps people in their day-to-day organizing as well as pre-

paring for major events like a move, says it helps to start with one area of a person’s life, whether that means one physical space or one element in their surroundings that is causing concern. PLEASE SEE: Control your clutter, Page 18

Fall Active Living Guide

The garage or basement are often good starting points, as they’re typically where we put things we really don’t use anymore but haven’t been able to part with. “Usually people have already decided they don’t need that stuff but haven’t gotten around to it yet.” In Bunton’s case, for example, they found two large boxes of old family papers that were no longer needed, but came during a previous move.

Old cleaning supplies and household items are also easy to collect – we might use them one day, we think. Because those things don’t have a personal connection for people, though, they can be easier to work through and get rid of. “It helps to start with the easiest thing first, the things that are not useful to you anymore, not beautiful to you, and then you move on to the more difficult things,” Tissari says. The very act of making an appointment with an organizing professional can go a long way to pushing you past procrastination. “I think the biggest thing for most people when they move is the procrastination, and that’s where another person comes in,” Tissari says. “It holds you to it; it guarantees that time and makes you focus on that task.” Ridding yourself of the excess “baggage” has practical benefits beyond simply feeling better in your space. For those moving into a smaller home, or SU

Email: editor@ oakbaynews.com To advertise in HomeFinder, contact Oak Bay News publisher Janet Gairdner at jgairdner@ blackpress.ca one with less storage, that can mean spending considerable money on external storage. The key, if possible, is to start early. “In the back of your mind, if you’re thinking of moving in six months or a year, start making time to organize your things. It will give you time to go through things in a thoughtful way,” Tissari says. “Bringing someone in to help you also lessens some of the burden of the move.” As an organizer, Tissari understands the importance of building a rapport with clients, finding out what is important to them. She

strives to understand their goals for their space. For things clients are ready to part with, Tissari’s experience and network helps her locate sources for recycling, repurposing or finding them a new home, Bunton notes. For Tissari, and many organizing professionals, the practice comes down to breaking things into three categories: Things to keep, things to recycle (UsedVictoria, auction, charity donation, etc.), and things to throw away (either garbage or literal recycling, like shredding old papers). Once she and the homeowner have an idea of what’s left in the “keep” category, Tissari can help with things like floorplans and furniture layouts to ensure what’s kept will fit comfortably – and avoid the cost of moving what won’t! “You have to live within the space you have,” she observes. “At the end of the day, to have value, something must be useful or beautiful you.” editor@oakbaynews.com
