Construction on a new Rykerts port of entry facility will begin in 2017, Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks announced July 29 on behalf of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Steven Blaney.

Wilks told Canadian Border Services Agency representatives and Creston Valley elected officials that $37.5 million would be used to improve infrastructure in B.C., including the Kootenays’ Rykerts and Waneta border crossings. (The Rykerts crossing’s portion will be released after contracts are awarded.)

“This facility has been in place since 1972 and has worked well for the last 43 years,” said Wilks. “But it’s time for some TLC.”

Ross Millar is on the road to recovery and is expected to return home to Creston later this month, his sister, Sara Malyk, said last week.

Millar was severely burned on the night of April 30 when a suspected arsonist set fire to his apartment while he was sleeping. He was transported to Vancouver General Hospital in critical condition and has undergone several skin graft operations.

Band donating to teen committee

The Teen Action Committee will benefit from a concert at Millennium Park on Aug. 15, when Red Mountain takes to the stage for an evening of hard rock.

“We want to give back to the next generation,” said Adam Dye, lead singer of Red Mountain, which will donate 50 per cent of the proceeds to the TAC. “They do a lot of great stuff around town, and I like to see them doing positive work.”

After an opening set by teen band Legion, Red Mountain — Dye (vocals, synth, guitar), Neil Ripski (drums), Dillon Olfert (bass, vocals) and Micah Snow (guitar, vocals) — will offer a selection of original songs by Dye and covers of songs by some of his inspirations, including Tool, Sabbath, Alice in Chains, Megadeth, Metallica and Nine Inch Nails.

Dye has been a musician most of his life, and seriously playing the guitar for about 13 years. The Edmonton native has lived in Creston for a year, and orga-

nized and performed in a few big rock concerts when he lived in Calgary.

The Aug. 15 show will be suitable for all ages of rock lovers — “There’s no growling or screaming. It’s all clean singing,” Dye said — and will give Creston audiences a chance to hear some different music by local talent.

“It gives a taste of city music,” he said.

“You’ll see some great musicianship.”

Tickets for the concert are $5 in advance at Black Bear Books and Creative Fix, and $8 at the gate. The Fork food truck will be on-site.

In addition to the general office space, the facility south of Creston has kitchen, washroom and locker facilities for staff, as well as a holding cell and upstairs storage. But it was built for only four CBSA officers, and now has eight full-time officers and a superintendent, as well as additional support staff in the busier summer months.

The border crossing upgrade was welcome news to elected officials, including Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie, who appreciated the invitation to the announcement — a similar invitation likely wasn’t extended when the building opened.

“We’ve worked together to progress

as a country,” Louie said. “We are an equal government and looked at as a legitimate government by the CBSA.” With 270,085 travellers crossing in 2014-15 and 276, 398 in 2013-14, the new facility — to be built with a modular design — will help to keep traffic flowing between Canada and the U.S. “It gives the opportunity for business to keep moving out of Creston, and also for Creston,” said Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director Tanya Wall. “This is one of our most beautiful areas and a great opportunity for a new building.”

RDCK Area C director Larry Binks added that he was pleased with the investment in the Creston Valley, and noted that rural communities often feel left out of government funding.

“Thank the minister and prime minister for spreading that around,” he said.

The investment is part of $440 million announced in November 2014 to replace aging ports of entry across the country, part of the CBSA’s efforts toward modernization.

“Improvements to port of entry facilities help ensure the free flow of legitimate travel and trade across Canadian borders,” said Blaney in a press release.

“Our commitment to invest $440 million in border infrastructure to modernize port of entry demonstrates our government’s ongoing commitment to the safety and prosperity of our country.”

The $440 million is in addition to the $241 million already invested by the federal government to expand and modernize ports of entry over the last five years. The Kingsgate port of entry south of Yahk received a $16.3 million expansion a few years ago, with the new facility opening in March 2012.

Two main variables affect mortgage capacity

For this month, we will be continuing to take a look at the “five Cs of credit”. To refresh your memories, the five Cs include credit, capacity (ability to make the payments), capital (down payment), character (length of employment, savings history and other factors that supplement credit history) and collateral (assets owned in addition to down payment). Last month, we took a look at what lenders look at when reviewing credit. This month we will be talking about capacity, the ability to make loan payments.

On a broad level, capacity is quite simple. It is basically the borrower’s ability to make the payments on their loans. This is generally done by looking at the percentage of your income that is used up to make these payments. The two main things that can vary here is what percentage of your income a lender will allow, and what can be used as “income”.

For mortgage lending, the rule of thumb is 32 per cent of your gross income can be used towards your mortgage payment, property taxes and heating. This is called your gross

debt service ratio (GDS). The percentage that can be used for total debts (total debt service ratio or TDS) is generally 40 per cent. TDS includes all payments, such as car loans, credit cards and lines of credit. So very simply, if you make $100,000 a year you can spend up to $32,000 on your mortgage payment, property taxes and heating. This is how lenders qualify you when you are Dean Bala applying for loans.

The ratios I presented are fairly conservative. These can change slightly in some circumstances. One example is that some lenders will allow you to go to a higher TDS than 40 per cent if your credit score is above a certain number. For example, if your credit score is above 680, some lenders will allow a TDS of up to 44 per cent.

Another exception that some lenders can offer is the combination of the two, often, again, if you have excellent credit. So rather than being limited to 32 per cent on the GDS, you may be able to use the full 40-44 per cent for your mortgage expenses alone.

The second component of capacity is how lenders view your income, and

what they will allow you to use. This again can vary a lot between different lenders. Generally with mortgages, any income that is fairly steady (salary, set hourly schedule, etc.) can be proven with a job letter and recent pay stub.

The amount stated by the employer on the job letter is the income figure used by the lender as long as that person is not on probation.

Where things can get a little more difficult is when wages can vary. This often happens for self-employed workers, seasonal workers and hourly workers where there are no guaranteed hours given. Usually in these circumstances, a lender will require proof of past income via notice of assessments. These are the papers that you receive back from the Canada Revenue Agency when you file your taxes. It is quite easy to prove income this way; the only downside is the length of employment needed.

Generally a lender will want to see a two-year average. So that can be a long time to wait if you are just starting one of these jobs, whereas if you start a salaried job, you could have a mortgage approved right away as long as the employer is willing to state that you are not on probation.

This is just a broad level look at how lenders look at “capacity”. Like I mentioned, each lender will have their own guidelines and ways of looking at things. There are a number of mortgage

Since our first granddaughter was a baby we have looked after her, and later her brother too, while her parents went on vacations. The last two years have each included weeklong visits to Creston, so the kids get a change of scenery from their home in Calgary.

Now six and three years old, the little ones are active and chatty, and endlessly entertaining. And each time they visit I am transported back to my own childhood, when every June I started harassing my dad to find me a ride from Calgary to Fernie so that I could spend time with his parents.

Those summers with my grandparents created lifelong memories, and I hope the same is happening on our visits from Quinn and Wilson.

The contrast in those visits and mine are dramatic, not surprising because a half-century separates them. They are brought to Creston by their parents, who make sure they stay a day or two to get the kids settled in. I arrived at my grandparents’ door, suitcase in hand, in the company of a driver, then knocked and waited for my grandmother — Mom, as she was known to her grandchildren — to answer with a big welcoming hug. A minute later my granddad — Pop — would arrive, having made the walk from his chair in the living room. From him I got a handshake. We never hugged, not one single time, to my memory.

I still raise my eyebrows in wonder each time we drive past that home and yard just west of the West Fernie bridge. As a child, I thought the twobedroom house was large, and that the one-third-acre property was enormous. A workshop, storage shed and greenhouse provided endless hours of amusement, as did the huge flower and vegetable garden. The immaculate lawns were strewn with lawn orna-

ments, cut from plywood and painted

by Pop, the prototypical English gentlemen who moved slowly but steadily, keeping the place neat and tidy. The pink flamingoes and family of skunks were my favourite ornaments.

Lorne Eckersley Pop’s garden was so lush and attractive that people would stop on their drive by on Highway 3 and ask if they could purchase flowers.

Hundreds of gladioli in every colour imaginable were the main attraction, and he would cut a dozen and arrange sprigs of baby’s breath around them while he chatted with the visitors. In the cooler evenings — was the weather ever not nice back then? — Mom and I would join Pop in the garden to pick raspberries or carrots or my favourites, peas, which we would then shuck while sitting on wooden chairs, also made by Pop. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, my uncle would typically pick me up on his way out to Lizard or Coal Creek to fly fish. Occasionally I would make the walk up to Fernie’s North End to visit Grandpa, my mother’s dad. Most days involved a walk (there was no car) uptown to pick up the mail (and say hi to my godfather, who was the postmaster), shop for groceries (which were then delivered) or pick up magazines at the drug store. Pop was a great reader and he had magazines put aside when the store got its shipment. From under

the counter the clerk would bring up the latest issues of Popular Science, Popular Mechanics and others, including a selection of magazines on professional wrestling, his favourite TV entertainment.

In the living room, I always kept a stack of those magazines, going through them one by one, while I was watching television, when Mom would allow. Spokane stations were exotic fare for a Calgary kid. We sat in wonder when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon’s surface. I developed a fascination with politics by watching live coverage of Democratic and Republican presidential conventions.

The tumultuous Republican convention in Chicago in 1968 still has a place in my memory. Saturdays were wrestling days and Pop and I sat, eyes glued to the screen.

Today, there is no television feed to our house, but the kids get some access each day to the iPad their dad leaves behind. Each day they have several activities — the pool (“Creston”, as Wilson calls it), splash park, wildlife centre, playgrounds, stops at Dairy Queen and “nature walks” so Quinn can collect craft supplies. The days allow us to bond with the kids, as I did with my grandparents, and provide us with plenty of amusement.

Like when Angela, on the evening before the parents came back, asked the kids what their favourite things had been during the week. A twinkle came into Wilson’s eye as he called out, “The trampoline!” We all burst into laughter. There had been no trampoline and somehow, even at the age of three, Wilson knew his answer would be funny. We will never forget it.

Skatepark information gathered

There have been a few changes happening around the community complex this last while; if you have driven past the volleyball court recently, you probably noticed the old siding was torn off and replaced with the Thermopanel siding, which raises the insulation value to R-32 from R-0ish in places. Inside we have new plywood and paint, and will be installing some sort of track system to hold advertising panels, which will be lightweight corrugated plastic. Not unlike computer technology, sign materials have changed immensely for the better as any of us that have had the pleasure of wrestling a threequarter-inch sheet of plywood 15 feet up a ladder will attest. The Thermopanel installer from Calgary that got the contract was the same one that did the original install five years ago and was imploring us to find more work in Creston as he absolutely loves the valley.

You may have noticed the advertisement in the Creston Valley Advance a few weeks ago about the public meeting to seek input from our skatepark users on July 22. The meeting was a part of an overall skatepark assessment we have arranged to have done on the 15-year-old structure in order to establish condition and what the future may hold for it. I was pleased to see we had pretty close to equal numbers of younger riders of maybe 10 to 14 years old compared to

older riders of 16 to 30-plus years old, all providing valuable input on our park as well as other parks in the area and beyond. There was a third group that maybe rode in a previous life or had some connection to community

The consultant, Jim Barnum, president of Spectrum Skateparks, led the meeting and it became clear very quickly he knew skateboarding intimately, initially from a boarder’s point of view as they bantered back and forth about carving, fakies, ollies, grinding, McTwists, tailslides and verts. He also had no issue discussing community engagement, esthetics, family friendliness, crime prevention through environmental design and engineering, amongst many other points. Also providing input at that meeting or the staff/professional meeting the following day were local area directors, Town of Creston councillors and engineering manager, RCMP, local Regional District of

Central Kootenay staff and managers from the Nelson and Castlegar recreation complexes who brought some great operational insight from previous rec centre skatepark experiences in Western Canada. When the report is completed in a few months, it will be presented to the Creston Valley Services Committee.

By now, the repairs and upgrading to Rotacrest Hall’s upper parking lot will be underway and will deal with some detrimental surface and subsurface drainage and grading issues that became apparent when the hall upgrades were done last year. By the time the dust settles, there should be a bit more space to park up top, along with new pavement winding back down the driveways. While there probably won’t be an increase in parking spaces, there will be a wider driveway space to allow easier access for emergency vehicles or drop-offs without hearing that screeching sound as dude’s trailer hitch opens the side of your car up like a sardine can. As usual, you won’t see the more important infrastructure work such as excavating down to the foundation, installing weeping tile and waterproofing, as well as compacting to specifications that will ensure a long life cycle of the building and parking lot. But it will be there!

Reflection on the laborious trek to freedom

Community should preserve grain elevators To the Editor: I wonder how many local residents and visitors view the two derelict grain elevators on Northwest Boulevard as symbols of Creston’s agricultural heritage, an eyesore or both?

After driving through Creston recently, I learned that these two iconic buildings are privately owned. I also learned the grain elevator in Wynndel was owned by CP Rail, but dismantled two years ago. Why haven’t they been restored in all these years?

The property owner of the Canyon Street elevators could work in partnership with the Creston Museum, one or more community organizations and the Town of Creston to restore them. The federal and B.C. governments could be approached for partial or full funding.

On the Internet there is a federal application form — “Legacy Fund: Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage” — that can be filled out by any community organization.

There’s also the BC Heritage Legacy Fund (heritagebc.ca). Registered non-profit societies, registered federal charities, local governments, selfgoverning First Nations and school boards are eligible to apply for funding.

Perhaps the two elevators could be renovated in a similar fashion to what happened in Dawson Creek. From www.dcartgallery.ca: “In 2014, the Dawson Creek Art Gallery was recognized as the northern winner of the Architecture Foundation of BC’s best building contest.

“This building is utterly unique in concept, design and its cultural value in presenting visual arts in BC. In 1982 the community recognized the value of preserving one of the iconic symbols of Dawson Creek’s agricultural heritage: the prairie grain elevator.

You wonder what it would be like to be so blissfully oblivious. If you were less

If you hadn’t buried yourself in activist blogs and documentaries, would you be that girl with the perfect hair, constant grin and constantly buzzing phone?

Probably. But then you’d probably be racist, sexist or homophobic. Or mean. And that just wouldn’t do.

It’s finally 3 p.m., and you hightail it for the bus line, finally getting to talk to your friends and put your headphones in. The bus pulls up.

Your ship has come in.

Congrats, you just survived another day in high school. You worked hard, you made the least amount of eye contact necessary and did your best to not say your inner monologue out loud.

When graduation day finally came, I took a break from gleefully rejoicing in ecstasy to reflect on high school. There were bad times,

there were alright times, there more alright times. I did a pretty stellar job of staying out of the drama, and I got decent grades. I made some friends, and did my best not to make enemies. (The suppression of the inner monologue was successful.) There are things I did well, and some things I wish I did better. I got through high school. And although it was pretty much a glorified popularity contest with notebooks and faulty air conditioning, I got through it, and it was a hella valuable experience. The thing about high school is it’s a lot like the world, in that we still got a helluva lot of work to do. But we’ll get there, if everyone just does what I say. Just kidding. But really.

I hope there’s Hubba Bubba in college.

Museum’s tours offer unique look at valley history

I just took two trips back in time to the Creston that existed before the first automobile coughed its way along mud-rutted downtown streets. Creston Museum manager Tammy Hardwick played the role of Jean Ramsey Mallandaine, an immigrant from Scotland, who moved to Creston in 1904 to teach in Creston’s first school. Dressed in period costume, Hardwick began the tour by introducing herself and explaining that her friend, Hannah Maxwell, has a grandson with an app that lets her travel through time. She stays in Mallandaine’s character for the entire tour.

The bus makes several stops in the hour-and-a-half tour and at each stop, Hardwick displays several old-time photos that show what the area looked like back in the early 1900s and tells about the dreams and escapades of the people who lived and worked here at that time. Her research is impeccable and includes anecdotes that make Creston’s past residents into real people with real challenges, real secrets and real successes.

Her photographs are carefully chosen. While parked in the parking lot behind the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce building, she held up photographs of Fleet Street, which ran along the west side of the railroad tracks where wooden boardwalks formed the waiting platforms at the train station. At this stop, Hardwick pointed out Creston’s first newspaper office, the Review, the Mawson

brothers’ store and the Pacific Café, where Matt, the Chinese restaurateur, gave food to people whether they could pay or not.

Crestonites have been taking care of each other for a long time.

The next stop was between the two drugstores on 11th Avenue North where we looked at photographs that showed Creston’s first auditorium, a small convenience store, a bakery and Richard Bevan’s garage where you could buy a Model T Ford. Mrs. Mallandaine expressed awe at the fact that Richard Bevan was able to drive all the way to Cranbrook in five and a quarter hours.

There were several more stops on the bus tour and at each one, Mrs. Mallandaine showed photos of 40-acre apple orchards that existed that are now residential areas.

One of these orchards belonged to Dr. G. B. Henderson, who, unlike other doctors of the early 1900s (and many doctors of the present day), bought land and stayed in Creston. Dr. Henderson and his wife, Nurse Ellen, attended the medical needs of Crestonites for several years.

I also took part in the orchard tour that was led by a student employee. We began with a tour through the orchard display behind the museum with handson activities to give us a feeling for what it was like to own and operate an orchard in Creston’s early days. Children had an opportunity to try some of the old equipment. Adults role-played some of the historical figures in the Creston orchard industry.

The hands-on experience got real when a bus took us to a cherry orchard where we picked cherries for the Harvest Share program and were allowed to keep a third of what we picked for our own use. I now have a good-sized jar of

dried cherries ready to be added to my winter porridge.

Both of these tours are fascinating. The orchard tour offers a fun family event and the downtown tour with Mrs. Mallandaine offers a glimpse into how our community evolved from huge apple orchards to the town we live in today. Kudos to Tammy Hardwick and the Creston Museum.

Obituaries

Diana “Diane” Norris

November 30, 1945 ~ July 26, 2015 Diana “Diane” Norris (nee Vinish) passed away at Kelowna General Hospital on July 26, 2015 due to complications following lung cancer.

She was 69.

Diane was born on November 30, 1945 in Melville, SK to her parents, Ignace and Eva Vinish. She married Kenneth Norris in 1967.

Diane is survived by her loving husband Ken; her daughter and son-in-law Wendy and Mark Roberts of Cranbrook, BC; her son and daughter-in-law Jacob and Kami Norris of Seattle, WA; her brother Larry (Paulette); and two grandchildren, Melissa and Justin.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Creston Hospital and the Kelowna General Hospital for the care that they extended towards Diane.

A memorial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Lois Jean Currie

August 2, 1947 ~ July 25, 2015

Lois Jean Currie, of Creston, B.C., passed away peacefully on July 25, 2015 at Creston Valley Hospital at the age of 67.

Lois was born on August 2, 1947 in Nelson BC to Wright and Margaret MacIntosh.

Following her father’s career as a brewmaster, Lois lived in Nelson, Cranbrook and Fernie before finally settling in Creston in 1959. In 1964 she secretly eloped and married Ian Currie in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and together they had two children, Jacqueline and Brian.

Lois was very proud of her Creston Valley heritage with her great-grandparents, John and Sarah Ellen Dow being some of Creston’s first pioneer settlers.

Lois worked as a librarian at the Creston Public Library and was a 27 year employee of School District 86 where she worked at the District Resource Center.

A unique soul, Lois was very creative and known for her talent in the kitchen. She also spent many years actively involved in Quilts for Kids and was also a founding member of the Bee Hive Quilters. Known

for her colourful sense of style, Lois was never happier than when she was meeting new people or playing surrogate grandmother to her friends' children and grandchildren. She most recently became involved with the local chapter of Days for Girls, helping to empower women in third world countries.

Lois is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ian; daughter and son-inlaw Jacquie and Len Ringstad; son Brian and daughter-in-law April; brother Stuart; sister Kay; sister-in-law Joan; grandchildren Matthew, Tanis, Aaron, and Yyael; great-grandchildren Brennan, Ella, Adalyn, Ainslie and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held at the Creston branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Monday August 3, 2015.

Leo Marie George Douville August 9,1936 ~ July 26, 2015

Leo Marie George Douville, 78, of Creston, BC, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015 at his home.

Leo was born August 9, 1936 in Ponteix, Saskatchewan to Oliver and Aldea (Cote) Douville. He moved with his family to the Crowsnest Pass early in the 1950s and to Creston a few years later. On July 13, 1957 he married Marlene Agnes Storm in Creston, where the couple resided for the remainder of their lives.

Leo worked a variety of labour jobs, including at the Michel mine near Fernie, BC, until finally he became employed at the Crestbrook sawmill, where he worked as a sawyer for most of his 34 years of employment there. Leo took great pride in the high production on his shifts. He retired early, at the age of 55, in 1991.

Leo enjoyed family gatherings and skiing with his family. Anyone who knew him, knew that one of his favourite activities was dancing. Leo’s love of dancing was exhibited in his passionate commitment to the Swan Valley Square Dance Club to which he belonged with his wife, Marlene, and later with his longtime friend, Carol Bateman. He and Carol could also be found at the weekly dances at the Rotacrest, right to the end of the last season despite the decline in his health.

Leo loved camping and most of his summer was spent with Carol camping out with their truck and camper. He and Carol loved to explore the countryside on their quad, especially in the mountains behind Yahk.

Leo is predeceased by his wife Marlene; his parents; his siblings Leona, Paul, Laurette, Therese and Armand; as well as his brothers-in-law, Roy and Don Storm.

Leo is survived by his longtime friend, Carol Bateman; his children Laurie (Robert) Schemenauer, Robin (Karen) Douville, Donna (Chris) Brass, Neil (Kim) Douville and Gail (Matthew) Thompson; siblings, Andrée, Lucien, René and Denis; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leo will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at the home of his son Robin on Saturday, August 1, 2015.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Alberta songwriter performing at Sasquatch SUBMITTED

Tim Isberg will play a concert with Creston’s own Mark Koenig opening the night on Saturday at the Snoring Sasquatch.

Isberg, originally from southern Alberta, is an accomplished singer-songwriter who is re-

emerging in the performance scene after a lengthy hiatus from music to serve in the Canadian Army.

Isberg had the privilege and reallife challenges over several years living and working in different cultures, international conflict zones and amidst the best and worst humanity has to offer. As a performer, he has entertained audiences in many interesting corners of Europe, east Africa and Afghanistan, and throughout the Middle East and Levant. Many of his storyteller songs stem from these life adventures.

Isberg brings well-crafted songs to the stage along with an appealing vocal timbre, but more than that, he brings a unique and endearing array of life experiences and shares them in

a way that makes each listener feel connected.

In his years abroad, Isberg was a favourite on folk club circuits and in group performances internationally for deployed military and civilian personnel, performing his own Americana and contemporary original songs and an eclectic mix of rock, pop, folk, Celtic and country cover tunes.

Isberg’s solid guitar rhythms and ear-catching songs create a style of his own where listeners can escape into the story behind the song. His demo song, “Devil on Your Back”, of turn-of-thecentury outlaws on the western Blackfoot Plains was a finalist in the best song of Alberta for the Calgary Folk Music Festival.

Before embarking on his military career, Isberg’s past included a formal education in environmental sciences, skills in training horses and early exposure as a budding young musician — a pastime he has missed.

Since returning to the Alberta music scene, Isberg is quickly gaining very credible exposure with musicians and audiences alike. His added exposure as a public speaker on domestic and international issues, and as an MC for special events also contributes to a positive audience experience.

Cadet Jeremy Mogg from Creston has been developing his musical talents over the past three years. He has attended summer training with the cadet program for the past three summers, moving from basic musician course to intermediate musician course and now on the advanced musician course.

He joined a group of cadets from all over British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories at the Albert Head Cadet Training Centre, near Victoria, BC. Mogg, 16, is from Creston’s 904 Kootenai Squadron or the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He has been a cadet for four years. He is a student at Prince Charles Secondary

School and enjoys playing piano and basketball outside of the Cadet Program.

This summer, he was chosen to attend the six week advanced musician course, mainly focusing on the trumpet and looking to be qualified as a Level 3 musician. In addition to music training, the cadets participate in weekly sports activities, air rifle range, visited Butchart Gardens and watched the Ceremony of the Flags in downtown Victoria. As a combined band, the cadets performed at the opening ceremony for a HarbourCats semiprofessional baseball game, Duncan Days, graduation parades and Beacon Hill Park for Veterans Day. Mogg beamed about his experiences and feels his skills have developed well during his time at summer training. He hopes to receive his drum major
