Construction on a new Rykerts port of entry facility will begin in 2017, Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks announced July 29 on behalf of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Steven Blaney. Wilks told Canadian Border Services Agency representatives and Creston Valley elected officials that $37.5 million would be used to improve infrastructure in B.C., including the Kootenays’ Rykerts and Waneta border crossings. (The Rykerts crossing’s portion will be released after contracts are awarded.) “This facility has been in place since 1972 and has worked well for the last 43 years,” said Wilks. “But it’s time for some TLC.”
