Isabella Keeps Getting Stronger

A father’s love pays off for little one Isabella Olmr making strides in her recovery

Isabella Olmr is getting stronger as she approaches her second birthday this month, and one year to the date since she first came home to the care of her father Andrew. She is now able to breathe on her own for most of each day and usually only requires use of a ventilator when she sleeps.

An Aldergrove father who has been providing stay-at-home care for his young daughter is heartened by her steady progress.

Isabella Olmr is not recovered yet, and she suffered a relapse last month when the region’s air was thick with wildfire smoke, but she has made significant strides forward.

It’s a round the clock responsibility as Isabella, now just two weeks away from marking her second birthday, has a rare condition that simply causes her to stop breathing.

It started a mere five hours after her birth, when doctors observed “episodes of apnea with severe oxygen desaturation and apparent seizure activity.” Doctors call it hypoventilation syndrome as she shows no respiratory drive but they have not been able to determine the cause.

As a result Isabella spent the entire first year of her life in BC Children’s Hospital, where she had a tracheostomy placed in her neck to assist her with her breathing. A ventilation system was connected, and sensors — a SAT monitor — set off alarms when there is a problem with her heart rate or oxygen levels.

G-tube feeding was also used until Isabella started taking food from a spoon as approved by doctors at Children’s Hospital.

Her father, Andrew, undertook the responsibility of being her sole caretaker after separating from Isabella’s mother in January. He also cares for their eight year old daughter, Rachel, in the home he’s owned in Aldergrove for the past nine years.

“Her mom wanted (Isabella) to go to a foster home but I refused,” says Andrew.

“I took the training; I took a crash course for three months at Children’s Hospital. There’s a lot to know.”

Isabella and Andrew’s story was featured in The Star last November, and in recent months there have been some positive developments.

“She was doing really good, she was off the ventilator all day while she was awake and she was breathing on her own. Then on July 7, when the air was bad because of the wildfires, she stopped breathing,” said Andrew.

Isabella was rushed into Children’s Hospital, where she stayed for 20 days for observation and recovery.

“They also put her on a puffer, as they suspect she has asthmatic tendencies, but they said it was not a virus. I have to take her back for a couple nights this week for observation, but she seems to be back on track now.

“She’s only on the ventilator when she’s sleeping, she’s eating with a fork, and she’s almost running.

“She’s also got a speaking valve on her trach tube, and she’s using her mouth to form letters. She knows a dozen hand signs too. She’s come a long way in the past year at home with me.”

Andrew, now 50, renovated his house as well as fought a custody battle over the children for most of the first half of the first year, while he prepared to provide care for Isabella in his home. He also quit his job as a heavy equipment operator, after 25 years of working in the business, and was getting by on employment insurance.

“I’ve not been able to work since February (2014). There’s no way to go to work every day if she’s in my care.”

Rotary on track for 50 ‘Starfish’ food packs this school year

The province funds daily shifts of nursing care in his home to spell Andrew off, but the responsibility and stress are weighing on Andrew.

Every time Isabella leaves home for appointments Andrew must also have a nurse accompany them in case there is an emergency during the vehicle ride.

Isabella first came home on August 22 of 2014, two days after her first birthday, and had endured a few challenges — a couple of seizures, and she had to go back to Children’s Hospital for a week in October when she

came down with a bug, likely a flu or cold.

“The seizures happen when her blood sugar is down, so I feed her apple juice for that,” says Andrew.

“The long-term hope is that maybe in a few years she can be off the ventilator. But they don’t know that for sure, they can only guess.”

“It’s like working 10 jobs.

Sometimes I’m up for 40 hours at a time, if a nurse calls in sick or whatever and they can’t get someone else in.

“My life has taken a 180 turn, it’s forced me to change who I am as a person.”

Aldergrove Rotary Club’s goal is to fund 50 Starfish food packs for elementary school students in Aldergrove so they be able to take a weekend’s worth of food home with them every Friday.

The initiative of the Aldergrove Rotary Club is designed to ensure that youths have food in their bellies on the days that school lunch programs are not available to the most needy.

It is inspired by, and modeled after, the Starfish backpack program launched by Abbotsford Rotary Club three years ago.

The program began in the last 12 weeks of the last school year to help feed 20 Parkside and Shortreed elementary school kids on the weekends. These students were part of their school’s breakfast and/or lunch programs during the week. Every Friday, participating students receive a backpack filled with two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners to last them for the weekend.

The empty packs are then returned and refilled for the following week, thanks to volunteers who shop for the items, fill the backpacks and deliver them to the schools.

The cost of providing the backpacks for one child for the school year is $525, which

Aldergrove Rotarians Paul Guiton and Pauline Buck have taken the lead on the project in Aldergrove and have raised funding for 25 backpacks so far. Their goal is 50 backpacks, 20 each for Parkside and Shortreed students and 10 for Betty Gilbert middle school students.

Donors this year so far include Aldergrove Credit Union and Otter Co-op (five backpacks each), Marnor Holdings (two backpacks), Poppy Estates and JD Farms (one backpack each). There has also been about $3,000 donated by individuals in the community.

Rotary treasurer Gus Hartl said fundraising will be

ongoing through the coming months to raise funds for another 25 backpacks and to keep the program going into future years.

Three local grocers — Safeway, Save-on Foods and Otter Co-op — are providing food at reduced prices to the Starfish program.

Sarah Barber, a nutritionist from Encompass society (formerly known as Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services) is be doing the shopping and advising on the contents of the backpacks, to provide

maximum nutrition and ease of preparation for the youths.

The backpacks will be filled every Friday by community service volunteers from the Aldergrove Secondary Student Leadership program. They will be assisted by mentors from the Langley Township Fire Fighters charitable association.

Both elementary schools already have breakfast and snack programs in place during the school week through Breakfast Canada, and will identify the students most in need of the food packs.

The backpacks have been supplied by Unitex of Abbotsford, which “gave us a fantastic deal on them,” said Buck.

216 Street interchange, Hwy. 1 widening funded

As eastbound traffic on Highway One slowed to a crawl through Langley at 9 a.m. on the Friday of the B.C. long weekend, representatives of three levels of government gathered at an underpass beneath it to announce that a section of the busy freeway will be widened and an interchange built at 216 Street.

“By this afternoon, with the B.C. long weekend, it could take people travelling east on Highway One two hours to get to Abbotsford. We hope

the widening will help ease that congestion,” said Rich Coleman, Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA. The federal government is contributing $22.3 million to the $59 million project; the provincial government is being asked to contribute up to $22.3 million, pending Treasury Board approval and the Township of Langley is contributing $14.3 million to the interchange portion.

Coleman said public consultation on the projects will begin later this year for the widening of the highway

from 202 Street to 216 Street to six lanes.

Construction of the 216 Street interchange will begin after the Township has taken the design plans to the public. Shovels will be in the ground in the beginning of 2016.

Coleman estimates the work will be complete in 18 months.

“The South Perimeter Road took less than that to complete,” he said.

“Our highway guys are getting really good at this.”

Coleman, who was at the announcement on behalf of transpor-

tation minister Todd Stone, said the construction will create 700 to 800 jobs. The province first announced their plan to widen Highway One between Abbotsford and Langley to six lanes, back in March.

On Friday, the federal government stepped on board with funding.

MP Mark Warawa, who was scheduled to make three separate funding announcements in Langley on Friday, said the Highway One project has been in the works for a long time. “Rich [Coleman] and I went to Township council and asked

them what their number one priority was and this is what they identified,” said Warawa.

Acting mayor David Davis attended the announcement on behalf of the Township. “I remember protesting with my father to have an exit at 216 Street is now it is happening,” said Davis. His father, Hugh, was also at the announcement.

“This will create better access to Walnut Grove, Willoughby, the Fort and to Highway One. It will ease congestion on 209 Street and 200th,” said Davis.

Fines in Aldergrove border smuggling case

Two Chilliwack residents have been fined and placed on probation for a year after they pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to smuggling a meth-labin-a-box across the Aldergrove border crossing last November.

Court documents posted online

show Calum James Buchanan and Lola Crystal McKay were each given one year plus one day of “community custody” which requires them to report to a parole officer.

Buchanan was fined $3,900 and McKay was fined $1,900.

Both have promised to pay the fines in $100 monthly installments.

Buchanan was sentenced in February and McKay was sentenced in June after they each pleaded guilty to “possession with intent to manufacture/deliver methamphetamine” a charge that carries a potential maximum of 10 years plus a $20,000 fine.

A charge of bail jumping, laid against McKay after she failed to

show up for a court hearing, was dropped after she returned to Washington State and pleaded guilty.

Both were arrested at the Aldergrove border crossing on Nov. 23 of last year after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered chemicals inside a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am. A U.S. customs officer

became nauseated and vomited from the fumes in some plastic wrapped storage containers in the car.

The crossing was shut down in both directions for about an hour while a hazmat team removed the chemicals. The sickened officer was transported to hospital and made a full recovery.

A proposed development would build housing on more than 100 acres of the Salmon River Uplands beside 56 Avenue and 240 Street in the Otter area of Langley next to the Tall Timbers golf course.

In a July 2 letter sent to nearby property owners, Infinity Properties of Langley said it has recently come to an agreement to purchase the site.

The company said it is working on a “first draft” of a development

plan for the land, which lies between the protected Salmon River in the north and sensitive wetlands in the south.

The letter hints the company will be seeking a re-zoning of the property to allow more than the current “Rural Residential” designation that permits one house for every 2.1 acres.

“The maximum density that has been developed in the Salmon River Upland area in the past is one unit to the acre or what could be 107 units for this property,” said the

letter, signed by Infinity Properties president Tim Bontkes.

Bontkes added the actual number of housing units would be less “given the topographical, environmental and access challenges surrounding this site.”

About 300 people attended the hearing, according to the “Leave Salmon River Uplands Alone” Facebook page.

An email sent out following the meeting by Doug McFee of the Salmon River Enhancement Society said the smaller lots should not be allowed “unless the proponent (Infinity) is willing to give something very significant back in return, such as a large park along the Salmon River.”

An email from McFee said that stretch of the river was “one of the most productive areas for coho habitat and spawning.”

Motorist badly hurt in Hwy. 1 crash Aldergrove Star

Cassi Sauer is one of the 2015 nominees for the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award. The award is given to a Langley secondary student in recognition of their athletic, scholastic and community efforts.

Sauer says getting involved in a multitude of activities is a great way to broaden your horizons.

“When you become involved, it opens up new doors,” explained Sauer.

“I want to be involved with lots of different things. I feel like having a community connection and building relationships with people are very important.

“You should be able to be involved in as many different aspects, I think that is important.”

Sauer, a Grade 12 student at Langley Fundamental, definitely keeps herself busy.

A 38-year-old Aldergrove man is in hospital with lifethreatening injuries after his motorcycle slammed into the back of a SUV on the freeway, near 200 Street last week (July 29).

According to Cpl. Ronda Rempel of the BC RCMP Traffic Services, around 4:30 p.m., the motorcyclist was driving eastbound on the freeway, just past 200 Street, when he rear-ended a vehicle and was ejected from his bike, leaving him with serious injuries.

“Contributing factors to the crash were speed and inattention on the part of the motorcyclist,” said Rempel.

Witnesses told police, he was driving at a high rate of speed before the crash.

The Aldergrove man was taken by ambulance to a trauma hospital. The highway’s eastbound lanes were closed from 5:15 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The passengers in the SUV were taken to Langley Memorial Hospital as a precaution but all were released without injuries.

The motorcyclist is expected to live but has very serious injuries, Rempel said. Charges are being considered.

She plays soccer — both at school and at the club level with Langley FC Alliance — and volleyball, but took this year off from the latter and instead served as an assistant coach on the Grade 9 team at her school.

Sauer has won the school’s Principal’s Award as well as the outstanding effort award every year since Grade 8 while maintaining an A average.

And away from school, Sauer keeps just as busy.

She is a member of the Langley 4H Beef and Swine Club and also teaches Sunday school at Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church. And Sauer has spent the past two summers as a counsellor at Camp Qwanoes.

She also went to Nicaragua in January with her school on a humanitarian trip.

Sauer plans to attend SFU and study to become a pharmacist.

Camp ignites aspiring firefighter’s dreams Aldergrove Star

Shelby’s father is a firefighter.

Her brother is a firefighter.

And Shelby is well on her way to becoming a firefighter, too.

Shelby Moon, who recently graduated from Langley Secondary School, has grown up around the fire service and knows it is a calling she wants to pursue. This summer, she will gain valuable hands-on experience that will get her even closer to her goal, thanks to the Township of Langley Fire Department and the Langley Township Professional Firefighters Association IAFF Local 4550.

From August 6 to 9, Shelby will be attending Camp Ignite, a four-day session held in Vancouver that educates and inspires young women aged 16 – 18 to follow their dreams and gives them an introduction to the world of firefighting. Participants are taught firefighting and search and rescue techniques, fire extinguisher use, lifesaving skills, and CPR. They also learn about fitness, nutrition, health, and teamwork.

The fourth year of the annual ride into history fundraiser for the Salvation Army Gateway of Hope in Langley drew more than 120 riders on Saturday.

The 245-kilometre “poker run” started at historic Fort Langley with a pancake breakfast provided by the Fort Langley Lions.

The riders headed out at 10 a.m.

En route to and from Harrison Hot Springs, there were a number of

I purchased a new vehicle. Well, not a brand new vehicle, but almost. My truck had that combination of age, kilometres and repairs needed that made me go shopping.

I hadn’t been shopping for a vehicle for about 12 years and I was a bit shocked when I saw what I would have to pay if I found what I was looking for.

I did find one on a private sale. Low mileage, clean and with every option but a fish finder.

I took it for a test drive and made an offer that was accepted, but was taken aback when the seller said he wanted cash.

After checking with my bank, I found out I couldn’t just take that much of my cash out of the bank without making a requisition, then waiting 24 hours.

Then the seller wanted to complete the deal at a SkyTrain Station in Surrey, so I called it off and told him I would look elsewhere.

That’s too bad, because he seemed like a nice guy and I remember a time when cash was exchanged, a handshake was made and a deal was completed. Land was purchased that way, materials to build homes were bought that way and we trusted each other.

But a day later I found the car I was looking for on a local lot and we made a deal. I’m going to tell you I got a good deal because no guy will ever say, “Boy that guy saw me coming and really ripped me off.”

We always get a good deal when we buy a vehicle.

Of course it has lots of new gadgets and the dashboard is somewhat similar to the Space Shuttle.

The first day it rained, I sat in the driveway for a bit figuring how to turn the wipers on. I tried to change the radio station and it started to scan and switch stations every 10 seconds so I turned it off.

A few years back when we bought a new car for the fire department, the salesman told me to put the owner’s manual in the vanity drawer in front of the toilet.

“In one month you will know more about that car than any other one you have ever owned.”

Not only was he right, but I also improved my regularity.

After I had learned what all the switches and dials were for, the driving was much more enjoyable.

Next I made a trip to Canadian Tire. They have an entire section there for guys who have just bought new cars.

When I was washing my old truck, I would shake the sand out of the old wash mitt, pour some laundry detergent or dish soap into a pail and after some scrubbing, it would look OK. But to protect this investment I purchased a ‘synthetic lamb’s wool wash mitt,’ a bottle of combination car wash and wax liquid that ‘produces a high gloss shine every time’, and because we have water restrictions I picked up the ‘Original California Car Duster’ designed to ‘scientifically and effectively remove surface dust without scratching.’ (As seen on TV!) My first car cost $100, and I was pretty proud of that old Plymouth and it never let me down.

I paid a bit more this time, but I’ll be more than happy if I get that service out of my new one.

At least, that’s what McGregor says.

Letter: This pay level is a bit rich for taxpayer Editor: I was surprised to learn some of these public servants in the Township of Langley earn three to six times what I earn in a year. I am paying for their salaries and their expense accounts out of my taxed yearly income. I don’t appreciate

how the mayor and the council members can vote to raise their salaries which in turn increases my taxes.

If the prime m inister of all of Canada earns approximately $325,000 to govern a population of about 35,500,000 people, how on Earth can the

Township of Langley justify over $105,000 for a mayor to govern a population of about 142,000?

If he was paid at the same rate by population, the prime minister should be earning $26,364,000 a year.

Social media blitz leads to berry boom

Langley blueberry farmer Gert Weller was preparing to write off much of his crop due to an early growing season and lack of pickers.

Then, his grandson Rob put the word out on social media and people started showing up.

Lots of people.

Thanks to the unseasonably warm and sunny weather that has meant the earliest start for the B.C. blueberry season in recent memory, the bushes at the Weller farm at 26097 84 Avenue were bowed down by the weight of unpicked berries earlier this week.

Finding the people to pick them, either through hiring pickers or allowing customers to pick their own, has been tough.

“It’s been a terrible year,” Weller told The Times during a Monday afternoon visit.

“We’ll lose tons, because they’re over-ripe and fall off.”

As Weller was walking through his 10-acre berry patch, he noticed that there seemed to be more people than usual picking berries.

Oddly, they seemed to recognize him.

A few insisted on having their picture taken with him, using their smart phones to record the moment.

Weller obliged, smiling.

As he did, he could see more and more people walking through the trees to his berries.

A temporary parking lot on

his front lawn was filling up with dozens of vehicles.

Weller’s grandson Rob had posted a story online about the situation together with a photo of the 89-year-old Weller standing by the sign at the front gate of his farm.

By Monday, the story had migrated to WeChat, a Chinese-language mobile text and messaging service said to be the largest standalone messaging app by monthly active users.

It told readers how an “older gentleman” needed a hand getting his blueberries harvested and gave the price, location and hours of operation, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There are thousands of WeChat users in the Lower Mainland. That explained the sudden surge of customers, and the fact they all seemed to recognize Weller.

The result was one of the busiest days at the Weller farm that Jack Trudgian, a family friend who was helping with the customers, has seen.

“I don’t know what your grandson did, but it worked” Trudgian said to Weller.

“It’s incredible.”

Weller was pleased.

“I’m 40 years here, (operating this farm), and I’ve never had a day like today,” he said.

As the flood of customers continued, a beaming Weller greeted them in at the entrance to the berry patch, passing out buckets, collecting cash and posing for photos.

Preservation ON ROADS of wildlife habitat is considered in planning all of Langley’s communities – let’s keep them safe!

Help protect our wildlife by respecting road signs and obeying posted speed limits. Motorists should use extra caution in the early morning and evening hours.

Slow down and watch for animals crossing, especially on arterial roads such as 208 Street, 88 Avenue, 80 Avenue, 72 Avenue and the Willowbrook Connector.

Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and Ditches The Township of Langley currently uses four full-time roadside grass mowers for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes, or an assigned area to follow. Pulling equipment away for a specific request lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches.

A

s the equestrian events close at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, competitors are preparing to head west to Langley’s Thunderbird Show Park.

The facility will be hosting two summer tournaments in mid-August, centering around the $126k Longines FEI World Cup Qualifier on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Leading riders from the U.S., Canada, Egypt, Venezuela and beyond will be competing for prize money and qualifying points towards the World Cup finals in Sweden.

The 2015/16 season of the Longines FEI World Cup North American League kicks off at Thunderbird Aug. 16.

Longines is joining this prestigious series as new official partner, official timekeeper and official watch.

The league goes across seven East and seven West Coast venues in three countries: the United States, Mexico and Canada, and boasts a minimum of US $2.4 million prize money across the series.

Now in its 42nd year, Thunderbird Show Park is hosting the inaugural Longines World Cup class.

Eight hundred competitors are expected on the grounds for the week-long tournament, which culminates with the main event on Aug. 16.

With dozens of the top riders in the world expected to go up against a course set by London 2013 Olympic designer, Alan Wade of Ireland, spectators are in for a big show.

Equestrian athletes and their mounts arrive Aug. 10 and will

be riding in several welcome classes, but all eyes will be on the Grand Prix field come the 16th.

Spectators will arrive early for grandstand seating around the field, but there’s plenty of space for tailgating and picnics.

The World Cup gets underway at 1 p.m. with opening ceremonies, giving visitors the opportunity to come early and enjoy the day.

A number of food trucks including Mollies Mini Donuts, Old Country Pierogi, and The Reef Runner will be on site and there will be facepainting, pony rides and a petting zoo for the kids. Entry is $10 per carload.

Work is worth it for Langley horsewoman Andrea Strain balances competing and training.

F

or a Langley rider and equestrian trainer, competing locally comes with the need for a heavy dose of balance, something Andrea Strain, owner of Villa Training focuses on on a daily basis.

“I don’t know that it’s necessarily possible to keep them separate… it’s a lot of juggling,” she said of both sides of her life.

“I love the two a lot. I love training, teaching people. But I aIso really love the competing aspect for myself. I couldn’t see myself doing one without the other at this point. I think it’s a really good balance.”

Balance is important. Each side of the coin comes with its own demands. Competing in Grand Prix contests requires both mental and physical endurance along with a connection to the horse.

Helping others succeed in competing demands focus, attention to detail, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to identify and interpret the cues of both horse and rider.

That being said, Strain knows her own preparations and competition experiences make her a better trainer to others because

“We’re a huge supporter of Thunderbird. Every year you roll in there [you look to see] what have they improved on. It’s a great atmosphere. They do a very, very good job,” she said.

“Their footing just keeps getting better and better.” ike her own business requires balance, so too does competing locally. Not only does she compete with her own horses, but her clients also compete at Thunderbird, requiring Strain to wear both hats.

She’s been competing there more than six times a year since 1999 when the new Thunderbird facility opened.

“I think it’s a Catch-22,” said Strain of local competitions. “I think it’s a real job of me being able to balance the home farm and the horse show. But at the same time we’re super lucky because we have such a nice place like that in our backyard.”

Strain learns a lot from her mentors and fellow riders.

“I’m constantly writing things down,” she said.

Part of her mental preparation before a competition includes reviewing key points she has learned over the years and reviewing things others have shared with her.

“I do this because I love the horses,” she said. “And the horses come first.”

“It’s a huge balance to get going with the young [horses] but then being able to have the

finesse to go in the Grand Prix with a well-schooled horse,” she said.

Her life-long passion for horses began early at an early age, with her parents “breaking down” and buying Strain her first pony

when she was just a six-yearold.

“It just kind of grew from there,” she noted.

he’s handling the reins of one of the premier equestrian show jumping facilities on the continent, but for Jane Tidball, it’s another day at the park.

The president and tournament director of Thunderbird Show Park – voted by the North American Riders Group (NARG) as the No. 2 show facility in North America behind Calgary’s Spruce Meadows – is carrying on the legacy of her parents George and Dianne, both of whom passed away in June 2014.

“My parents taught us to dream big, but be prepared to do the work to make those dreams a reality,” Tidball said.

“They also taught us to enjoy the ride, celebrate each victory and treat people who walk into your place of business as you would guests in your own home.

It’s what my parents believed in and it’s at the heart of everything we do.”

Tidball will do whatever it takes to help make Thunderbird

successful, with her day-to-day duties ranging from picking up garbage on the grounds to financing and strategic planning.

Her philosophy: “I never ask a member of my team to do something I wouldn’t do myself.”

She loves horses but leaves the riding to the experts in her family including her daughter Laura-Jane (LJ), who competes at the World Cup level, and her sister Laura, a former Olympian who has earned the top coaching designation in Canada – the EC NCCP High Performance.

Currently, Tidball is focused on a very busy August highlighted by a World Cup competition, which starts at 1 p.m. on Aug. 16.

“It feels like our August shows get bigger every year and this season is no exception,” Tidball said. “There will be some fantastic competition for our spectators to take in as we celebrate our inaugural Longines World Cup.” The World Cup serves as a qualifier for riders looking ahead to the FEI finals in Gothenburg, Sweden, next year and is attracting competitors from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Venezuela, and Egypt. ringing in this kind of world-class talent is a byproduct of Thunderbird not resting on its laurels, and continually looking for ways to fine tune its facility, Tidball said.

“There are several hundred horses on the grounds, their people and more than a few dogs – it’s energizing,” she said. “The August shows are like Christmas for us and we look forward to it all year. The grounds are peaceful and quiet when we arrive at sunrise, revving up through the day to the excitement of a World Cup ceremony. We invite everyone to visit us and experience it first hand.”

hunderbird Show Park started with a child and a $150 horse.

The story of Thunderbird Show Park began in 1966 when George and Dianne Tidball purchased a horse out of a field in Penticton.

As the story goes, after driving past and feeding the same horse two days in a row on the way to a ski hill, their oldest daughter Kathy suggested to her parents that they buy it.

They did... for $150.

From there, things took off at a gallop.

Dianne started looking for acreage, and in 1969 the family sold their house in West Vancouver to move to a place more suitable for horses – Fort Langley.

From that point on, the horses always came first.

While the indoor arena and stables were built, the family lived in a trailer.

Their house would come later.

While son Stephen was

team roping and cutting in high school rodeos, the girls were refining their own riding skills.

Having hired western trainer Doug Henry, George asked him to teach Kathy and Jane, and get them ready for their first show.

When Doug asked which show and how much time he had to work with them, George simply replied, “The PNE – next week.”

And sure enough, the girls were both showing at the PNE the following week. n 1970, George and Dianne purchased property at 200th Street and Highway One. Soon after, construction began on an indoor riding arena, two stable buildings and two outdoor riding rings which would host their first show in 1972 – a quarter horse show and team roping at Thunderbird Equestrian Centre.

The original plan was to build the park in phases, but Dianne wasn’t one to wait.

“With Dianne’s indomitable spirit, we opened with three hunter rings, three jumper rings, four warm-up rings and indoor stabling for 450,” laughed George.

The Tidballs started serious site planning before Christmas of 1998 and ground was broken the following April.

The grass areas were seeded in the fall and a construction-phase open house was held in October 1999.

Dianne oversaw development of Thunderbird Show Park in 1999, and managed it until 2005 when she handed the reins to daughter Jane. oday, Thunderbird is one of North America’s premier equestrian facilities.

Thunderbird holds six major hunter and jumper show tournaments each year.

Visitors have a big impact on this community The horse industry, and big shows, are a sizable part of the local economy.

H

undreds of horses and thousands of people will descend on Langley Township this summer for the Summer Fort Classic at the Thunderbird Show Park.

That won’t just mean a lot of riding, it will mean a sizable economic impact on Langley and the region.

Horses are big business in the Township.

Langley has long been known as the Horse Capital of B.C. It has one of the highest rates of horse ownership per capita in the province, and parts of Langley, particularly South Langley, are laced with horse trails through parks and along major roads.

The local equine industry generates more than

$60 million annually, and there are an estimated 429 farms with more than 3,800 horses, or 7.2 per cent of all the horses in the province.

Langley Township is also home to the only neonatal horse hospital in the province, along with a host of other veterinarian practices, trainers, tack and equipment shops, bedding suppliers, and boarding stables.

Show parks, of which Thunderbird is the biggest, have grown up to host world-class equine events.

Now Thunderbird’s big event will be bringing in a host of outside horses, riders, trainers, grooms, and fans for an extended period.

The influx of people will mean an economic event that will involve a lot of locals producers and service providers.

There are already 900 horses expected for the

Classic this August, and along with them will come riders, supporters, and family members.

In fact, according to the Horse Council of British Columbia, at a major horse show there will be five people for every horse.

That means approximately 4,500 people will arrive in Langley for the events at Thunderbird.

“Approximately 60 per cent of competitors are from out of province,” said Kelly Coughlin, senior program director for the Horse

Council.

“When you factor in the expenses for each person – food, housing, transportation, and entertainment

– it is a significant boon to the Langley Township economy.”

To accommodate the huge influx of both humans and horses, stores of feed and bedding are already being brought in, purchased from local and regional suppliers.

In late July, workers at the Thunderbird stables were unloading pallets of pre-bedding for the stalls where most of the horses will be kept during the big event.

Some horses will also be kept at outside boarding stables around Langley Township.

As for the approximately 4,500 humans, many of them will stay in trailers at the Thunderbird Show Park itself, living close to their animals during the competition days.

However, there will be spillover that will fill up some local hotel rooms or bed and breakfasts.

Horses are large, powerful, and unpredictable animals.

With the upcoming Summer Fort Classic and Summer Fort Festival events, Thunderbird Show Park saw the opportunity to create more fun for everyone in attendance around a common interest: food.

One connection led to another.

The people at Thunderbird asked their regular tent company if they knew anyone in the food truck circles. Folks at the tent company contacted an event planner they work with who knows the industry well and soon things started rolling.

Laine Ogilvie of MemoryLaine Events has been connected with food truck operators for a number of months and her connections made her

the natural choice to set up the additional food options for visitors to the show park during the August events.

“I went out and got some food trucks who were interested,” Ogilvie said.

It was her sister and brother-in-law’s food truck business that initially got Ogilvie interested in the

industry. She’s added food truck events to the other events she works on.

“I’m all in,” she said in regards to how she feels about the food truck business.

In fact, she started the Fraser Valley Food truck Association in January.

Ogilvie thinks the reason Thunderbird wanted to incorporate the food trucks into the Fort events is two-fold.

“They only have a

couple of food venues on site there and food trucks are really [popular],” she said. “And food trucks are so easy, they are self-contained and require nothing from Thunderbird.”

With the addition of the food trucks, enjoying the events becomes that much easier for families with diverse tastes.

“It’s a fun, new, unique thing to add to the classic,” she noted. “I hope that all the food trucks get quite a bit of business and I hope that everyone at Thunderbird enjoys them.”

Ogilvie also hopes that this foray into bringing food trucks to Thunderbird for these events will lead to even more fun with the food trucks at next year’s events.

“Like a food truck fest at the classics,” she said.

“Something to grow from.”

Participating food trucks will be serving everything from mini donuts to Russian food, Caribbean food to goodies from Hot Grandma’s.

“Where friends mean more than money!”
