Election race is on Parties yet to announce all candidates in local ridings

The 2015 federal election is underway, although only the Green Party has announced candidates in both local federal ridings.

The prime minister visited Governor General David Johnston at Rideau Hall Sunday morning to dissolve Parliament and begin the election set for Oct. 19.

Abbotsford will be predominantly split between two ridings. Neither has a full slate of candidates from the four parties yet.

The Abbotsford riding – which includes most of the city south of Maclure and Bateman roads – is currently served by incumbent MP Ed Fast, who has held the riding since 2006. He will be challenged by Jen Martel for the New Democratic Party and Stephen Fowler for the

Green Party. The Liberal Party has not yet nominated a candidate, and a meeting has not been set yet, according to a party spokesperson.

Signs have already started to go up in Abbotsford. The city has 15 designated locations where signs can be placed on public property.

‘Great’ Agrifair weekend Attendance figures aren’t yet tallied for this weekend’s Agrifair, but general manager Pamela Brenner said the event was a big success again this year.

“It was a great weekend,” she said.

The event ran from Friday to Monday at Exhibition Park under clear skies and high temperatures.

Brenner said the stands were packed all weekend for several of the featured activities, including Alberta Miniature Chuckwagon Racing, the West Coast Lumberjack Shows, the Mighty Fraser Rodeo and the demolition derby.

She said the musical entertainment was also popular, including the Dream Fleetwood Mac tribute show on Saturday and a concert drawing a crowd of 2,000 on Sunday night featuring Christian singer-songwriter Laura Story.

Attendance figures are expected to be released later this week.

Longest election campaign in a century Canyon riding includes those areas of Abbotsford north of Maclure and Bateman roads, and stretches north to Mission and east through Agassiz, and up through the Fraser Canyon to Lillooet and Cache Creek.

In that riding, Jati Sidhu is running for the Liberals while Arthur Green has been named for the Greens. The Conservatives had nominated a candidate, Liv Grewal, but he recently withdrew. Neither the Conservatives nor New Democratic Party have a candidate nominated at this point. A spokesperson for the NDP said the party will hold its nomination meeting on Aug. 16.

The Oct. 19 voting day had been fixed in legislation and party leaders had been in campaign mode for weeks, but dropping the writ this far ahead means spending limits will be in force for much longer than the typical 36 days.

The dropping of the writ comes in advance of the first leaders’ debate, which is scheduled to take place Aug. 6 and will be hosted by Maclean’s.

Apartment damaged A suite in an Abbotsford apartment building was damaged on Tuesday afternoon by a fire that began on the balcony.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called at about 2:15 p.m. to the fully involved blaze in a third-floor suite at Parkview Estates, located at 2821 Tims St. Assistant Fire Chief Ron Hull said the fire was fueled by a propane tank, but the exact circumstances are still being determined.

He said crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other units, although some of the neighbouring suites might have suffered some smoke damage.

“Crews did a good job knocking down the fire,” Hull said.

The occupant of the unit was not home at the time, but a cat that was in the suite died at the scene after crews attempted to resuscitate it, using an oxygen mask.

Election signs were already up in Abbotsford on the weekend, as the federal government officially launched this fall’s election campaign. give a financial advantage to Harper and the Conservatives, according to SFU political scientist Patrick Smith.

“They certainly have the largest war chest. Money matters in politics.”

He predicts the Tories will far outspend their rivals and might be in a position to blitz advertising channels late in the campaign when NDP and Liberal coffers may be nearly exhausted.

A campaign more than

twice the usual length means a spending limit twice as high – more than $50 million per party – that only the Tories have a realistic shot at fully exploiting.

The early writ drop means third party advertising – such as union-funded anti-Tory attack ads by Engage Canada – will now be subject to a tight $200,000 spending limit, largely clamping down on their influence.

That was a key motivation

for starting the campaign now rather than waiting, Smith said.

The longest campaign in more than a century will also mean higher costs to taxpayers. Elections Canada’s costs will be higher to mobilize staff earlier.

And more spending than usual by the parties would translate into a higher government subsidy back to them for use in future campaigns.

As for significant issues, Smith expects the federal push for new oil pipelines across B.C. will hurt the Conservatives in this province.

But he said the slowing economy will be the dominant issue on voters’ minds in deciding which party to support.

For the Conservatives to win even a minority, the Tories may need the anti-Harper vote split as evenly as possible between the Liberals and NDP, Smith said, and many votes bled off by the Greens as well.

He thinks the Conservatives will struggle to hold onto their seats in B.C. and the Greens may take another seat or two from the NDP on Vancouver Island.

Standoff at motel

A Mission man surrendered to police on Tuesday afternoon after a five-hour standoff with police at the Best Western Bakerview Inn, located at Sumas Way and Lonzo Road in Abbotsford.

Police Const. Ian MacDonald said motel staff noticed a broken window in a suite at about 6 a.m. and tried to communicate with the occupant. They were unable to do so after two hours.

Members of the emergency response team surrounded the suite and used several tactics to try to persuade the man, in his 30s, to leave the room. He man surrendered to police, without further incident, at about 1:40 p.m. MacDonald said the man does not have an extensive criminal history, and he could not comment on whether mental health issues were involved.

City can’t be ‘ordered’ to create more shelter for homeless: Judge Final arguments being heard in constitutionality case

He later suggested some decisions are best left to politicians.

“They’re responsible and accountable.”

Wotherspoon argued the lack of city action is important context when the judge decides whether the city’s bylaws are constitutional.

As final arguments began in a Supreme Court trial to determine whether Abbotsford’s bylaws and homeless policies are unconstitutional, Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson suggested he may not be able to force the city to do more for people living on the streets.

A group of homeless activists called the B.C./Yukon Drug War Survivors (DWS) allege Abbotsford’s bylaws are unconstitutional. Represented by the Pivot Legal Society, they allege a combination of the city’s bylaws – which prohibit unauthorized camping in city parks – and a lack of housing options put homeless people at risk and infringe on their right to security of person.

They also say city staff have tried to make life difficult for the homeless.

The city contends it’s been doing its best to help the homeless while keeping parks safe for other users.

After nearly a month of testimony by witnesses for both sides, Pivot lawyers David Wotherspoon and DJ Larkin began their final submissions to the court Friday.

Wotherspoon alleged that the city’s bylaws breach homeless people’s constitutional right to security of person. “... the evidence supports the conclusion that the goal of the

Hinkson said he was also concerned about making a ruling that would create what he called an “unhealthy environment” in Abbotsford’s parks, and cited reports of needles, feces and garbage at camps that have taken root in the city.

“If your clients are unable to avoid these types of environments, giving them carte blanche to stay as long as possible doesn’t seem to be the answer,” he said.

Wotherspoon said he hoped the justice would be able to create an order that would limit those issues.

“We don’t seek an order that results in chaos in the parks,” he said. In response to another question, he suggested the judge could allow camping in just some parks and public lands where it would be least disruptive.

Over the course of the trial, Hinkson heard from several homeless residents and city staff members, along with community members who have been working to improve the lives of those living on the street.

“There are obviously many altruistic people in Abbotsford,” he said. “It’s a credit to the City of Abbotsford that it has citizens like that.”

Investigators are looking into a house fire on Kildare Terrace.

A strong smell of gasoline was reported at the back of the home, where the blaze began.

They arrived to find the back porch area of the house engulfed in flames, but were able to knock down the fire and control it.

Probe reveals ‘disturbing’ trade in child porn RCMP uncover 1,200 porn cases in 2014 Black Press

RCMP say a sixmonth investigation last year uncovered 1,228 incidents of B.C. residents illegally sharing “troubling” child pornography, including photos and videos of child sexual abuse, using peer-to-peer networks.

New crime rate data released today

by Statistics Canada recently show child pornography cases reported by police more than quadrupled from 300 in 2013 to 1,271 in 2014.

But RCMP Insp. Ed Boettcher said the numbers don’t necessarily reflect a spike in actual activity but rather a better baseline estimate following the project by the B.C. Integrated Child Exploitation Unit.

“It was certainly eye opening to me,” Boettcher said. “It more accurately reflects the scope of the issue.”

Officers with the B.C. ICE unit had tracked internet addresses of B.C. computers trading in known illegal material using online networks.

It was the first broad sweep of its kind and revealed what Boettcher called a disturbing and tragic level of activity.

“These are crimes against children, they’re serious and they result in life-long emotional scars,” he said. “The internet is forever.”

The surge in activity uncovered was not matched by a major rise in culprits caught – a total of 107 accused pornographers were charged last year, up modestly from 2013.

But Boettcher said more are expected as police continue their investigations.

He said the probe has led to charges against 18 accused and two have already been convicted.

Violators who hide behind a computer screen can expect to lose their anonymity when they’re caught, he said.

“Our initial investigation provided us a rough location of where these offences were occurring. We are now pursuing these investigations,” Boettcher said.

“For those that think they can engage in this type of criminal act and hide, you should know that we have the expertise to find you.”

He also urged residents and business owners to monitor their computers for il-

But Loewen said if there is not sufficient new information within the opposition for council to consider, they should be free to make an immediate decision.

Coun. Patricia Ross said it is also important that council have the right to reserve a decision until later, as there can also be many letters and emails presented to council that they should consider.

Loewen said it is any councillor’s prerogative to ask for a deferral at any time, but it would be more democratic for council to be free to vote on whether that should occur. Staff will bring forward a report this fall.

A proposal for a banquet hall that could accommodate 600 people in west Abbotsford will move to public hearing, although multiple councillors have expressed initial concerns about the project.

The project is located near the intersection of Marshall and Clearbrook roads, and would feature a 1 , 5 2 5 - s q u a re - m e t re banquet hall located primarily on the second floor of an industrial building.

The site is zoned as agricultural but falls within industrial-business land use designation in the

Official Community Plan (OCP), which states that churches and other assembly uses are not permitted.

At a public information meeting that was previously held for the project, many supporters wrote on their comment sheets that a banquet hall of that size is needed in Abbotsford, as people must currently go to Surrey for large gatherings. However, the opponents noted that the use did not mesh with the surrounding industrial businesses that line that stretch of Marshall Road. Potential issues of parking and noise were also cited.

“I was pretty happy [to] win silver, but would have liked to win gold,” said the ambitious Olympian following his doubles and team events.

His goal — and gold — was obtained the following day when he beat out the three other Canadian bowlers grouped in his division.

Johnston tallied a score 38 points higher than Jake Huff of Okanagan Falls, B.C., who finished in second.

Athletes in every sport and event are grouped by age, gender, and ability in what the Olympics terms “divisioning,” which gives everyone a reasonable opportunity to win, thereby enhancing the Games’ competitiveness.

This was Johnston’s first World Games, and he said he was enjoying talking to friends and meeting new people.

He credits his family for much of his success, as they’re always there to support him. His mom, grandma and sister, were with Johnston in L.A., where the World Games took place from July 25 to Aug. 2.

In the doubles bowling category, Johnston partnered with Carlos Villafuerte of Alberta.

The two faced off against Aruba in the finals on July 28, losing 811-774.

In the team category, Johnston partnered with Linda Renner, Karalyn Summer and Villafuerte.

They lost to a fellow Canadian contingent in the finals.

Abbotsford’s Mike Palitti took part in the track and field event and picked up gold in the 4x400 relay. Tom Norton, the recipient of the 2015 Howard Carter Award, also attended the World Summer Games as one of six coaches for the track and field team.

Local Chris Hamilton, along with coach Vince Astoria, and the Canadian soccer team finished in fourth place in the five-a-side event.

Team Canada was a force to be reckoned with, bringing home a record-breaking 144 medals (70 gold, 48 silver and 26 bronze) along with countless personal bests.

It didn’t take long for Abbotsford’s Sophie Schmidt to reappear in headlines since the Women’s World Cup. The Canadian international signed with German women’s football club FFC Frankfurt last week, making her one of just a handful of non-German players on the squad.

“Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to play in Germany.

I held off because of the National Women’s Soccer League coming around and (Canadian coach) John (Herdman) wanted to have our best Canadians playing in and supporting the league,” Schmidt told the Canadian Press from Frankfurt.

Schmidt last played for Sky Blue FC of the NWSL, a nine-team league in the U.S., in the 2013-14 season when the club finished sixth. Schmidt tallied one goal in 22 games.

The 27-year-old midfielder was a key part of the Canadian team in the recent Women’s World Cup, operating as a regular starter and free kick specialist.

The Abbotsford product has accumulated 16 goals through 137 international caps.

FFC Frankfurt is a force in the women’s Bundesliga and abroad, claiming four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, including this year’s crown — the most among all European clubs.

It is with a deep sense of loss that we share the passing of Albert Edward (Ed) Laidley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Ed passed away on July 25, 2015 in Abbotsford with daughter and step-daughter at his side.

He was predeceased by his second wife Lynne (HB), parents Bert and Berta Laidley, sister Francis (Victor), and brother Ross (Carron). He is survived by his loving and large family; children Susan, Wendy (Gordon), and Murray (Val), first wife Edie, grandchildren Stephanie (Duncan), Chris (Katie), and Kim, stepchildren Cheryl, Allisen (Ray), Teresa (John), and Michael (Lorraine), step-grandchildren Corinna (Larry), Tracey (Terry), Colden (Allison), Brittany (Kevin), Natasha (James), Krista, and Doug (Jasmine), as well as 15 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Ed lived life to the fullest and was a kind and gracious man always cheerful and full of fun, and tunes! Born and raised in Vancouver, he spent 34 years teaching at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Teaching gave him great satisfaction and he cherished his talks with former students and colleagues. In the early years he served twice as Lions Club president and later was very involved in musical theatre. He was proud to sing as a ‘Chalk Spot’. Ed and Lynne enjoyed a quiet life in Abbotsford after their many travels.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Valley Room at The Ramada on Sunday, August 9th at 2:00 pm (RSVP to s.jgreen@telus.net).
