Engineers receive tenders for North Bridge and road realignment

Tenders for the North Bridge replacement and road realignment project were opened in an open public meeting Thursday, July 30 with total numbers showing the project as a whole will cost more than originally estimated.

There were nine envelopes containing bids focusing exclusively on the reconstruction of the bridge, as opened

by Lex3 consultant Trevor Baragar. There were amendments to most of the original proposals, which dropped the tender down to varying degrees.

The figures below show the new total cost estimates

for the bridge reconstruction portion of the project as submitted by the companies: • EllisDon: $2,717,440.24 • Volker Stevin: $2,377,000 • Innovative Civil Constructors: $2,814,250 • Carmacks Enterprises: $3,096,631 • Surespan: proposal withdrawn • Alberco: $2,523,910 • Ironclad Earthworks: $2,875,000 • OHL Construction Canada: $3,363,000 • Formula Construction: $2,879,505.

There were six bids for the road realignment portion of the project and all were submitted without amendments to

the original concept. The bids for the road realignment were disclosed by Jim Duckworth of Tagish Engineering: • Border Paving: $2,707,404.32 • EllisDon: $2,703,651.28 • Galloway Construction Group: $4,145,351.02 Construction: • TBL $2,819,467.62 Contracting: • Inline $2,650,693.82 • DB Bobcat Services: $2,966,980.91 At this point Duckworth and Baragar will review the proposals in detail with final information expected to be presented to town council at its Tuesday, Aug. 11 meeting at 4:30 p.m.

Farmers press on with CWB class action

Four western farmers allege that Ottawa shortchanged western Canadian farmers $720 million after the dismantling of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) in 2011/12.

A statement of claim by the farmers was recently amended to provide more detail in their case against the federal government. One claim made by the group is that approximately 93 per cent sales revenue was returned to farmers between 1998 to 2010/11, as compared to the 83 per cent in 2012/13.

“There is no justification for the government-run CWB to return just 83 per cent of sales

revenue to farmers in 2011/12.

The difference between 93 per cent and 83 per cent is in the order of $720 million. It should be noted that 2011/12 sales recorded the third highest revenue since farmers were put in charge of the Board in 1998,” said Stewart Wells, chairperson of the Friends of the CWB, in a July 13 press release .

One of the issues the farmers want resolved is that the 2012/13 financial report of the Canadian Wheat Board has never been released.

Anders Bruun, counsel for the Friends of the CWB, said the next step for the Friends was to wait for a judge to determine if the class action by

farmer plaintiffs Harold Bell of British Columbia, Andew Dennis of Manitoba, Nathan Macklin of Alberta and Ian McCreary of Saskwatchewan is justifiable.

Bruun said there are several requirements in creating a class action lawsuit and a judge has to be satisfied that the proper steps have been followed. He expects that a judge will review the case sometime in September.

“There’s usually not a reason to keep it secret unless there’s something wrong.”

The four clients want to see the financial statements for the 2012/13 period, explained Bruun, adding that they are putting out a call to the auditor general for assistance.

In their press release, the Friends of CWB state having access to the financial statements would help them determine if their claim that money was used to cover restructuring costs is correct.

“However, it appears that while the majority of restructuring costs were already met by 2012, the government-run CWB decided not to use all of the taxpayer money in 2011/12 in favour of accessing those funds in subsequent years. In fact, it appears that the government-run CWB even used money from pooling accounts to cover some of the restructuring costs,” explained Wells in the release.

“There’s usually not a reason to keep it secret unless there’s something wrong,” added Bruun in an interview.

He added that after the class action lawsuit began, the federal government paid western farmers $24,000,000.

Ponoka home lost to blaze at Ponoka Trailer Park

Members of the Ponoka Fire Department were called to a structure fire in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 29.

A doublewide mobile unit at the Ponoka Trailer Parkk caught fire and crews rushed to the scene to quell the blaze.

Owners Tim and Julie Bolen were able to leave the building uninjured while crews spent approximately three hours working to contain the blaze and eventually put it out. Crews had to attack the fire from the different angles to put out the flames.

Members of the community worked to help the Bolens find clothes and other necessary items and a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to help the family out.

Fire Chief Jamie Wilkinson said the point of origin of the fire is known but the cause is still under investigation.

Traffic stop nets handgun When members of the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit pulled over the driver of a Mercedes recently, the last thing they expected to find was a loaded .22 caliber handgun.

Officers stopped the southbound vehicle near Ponoka and could smell an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

While arresting the 28-year-old male driver and 29-year-old male passenger, the officer heard a splash nearby. Upon reviewing the police cruiser video the officer was able to determine

the passenger threw a black bag into the ditch.

The bag was eventually found and contained a loaded handgun and small amount of marijuana was also located.

The 29-year-old Prince Albert, Sask. passenger received several charges related to the possession of the unauthorized firearm. The driver, from Westbank B.C., was charged with possession of a controlled substance and failing to produce insurance and a licence.

Highway 2 closed after motorcycle collision Traffic on Highway 2 was busy during the long weekend and one collision, caused by a backlog of traffic due to a broken down vehicle, could have ended badly for a motorcyclist.

As vehicles were making their way southbound on Highway 2 on Friday, July 31 at 8 p.m. a motorcycle was hit from behind by another vehicle. The southbound lanes

were closed for some time while officers investigated.

Investigations determined the driver of the sedan that collided with the motorcycle is believed to have been impaired and provided two blood-alcohol samples of .19 and .18. They were charged with impaired driving. The rider of the motorcycle is believed to have survived the collision.

Impaired driver slow to drive at green light A Ponoka RCMP officer pulled over the driver of a 2003 Chevy Malibu Aug. 2 at 1:15 a.m. after witnessing her take too long to drive forward at a green light.

The driver, a 37-year-old woman, was arrested and provided two blood-alcohol samples of .15. She was charged with impaired driving.

Minor injuries after collision Emergency crews were called to a collision on Highway 2A near Tim Hortons Tuesday, July 28.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation but a 2014 Mitsubishi, driven by a 24-year-old Red Deer man, rolled after colliding with a 2011 Buick, driven by an

80-year-old Ponoka man.

There was also a 21-yearold passenger from Ponoka in the Mitsubishi. It is believed there were minor injuries from the collision.

Stolen Skidoo Police are looking for suspects related to the theft of a 1998 Skidoo Formula 3 and a homemade trailer.

The theft occurred sometime between Friday, July 17 and Monday, July 20 at a home on 53 Avenue.

Ponoka RCMP and the Integrated Traffic Unit took 214 calls from July 18 to Aug. 3.

For the past three-and-ahalf years I have commuted from St. Albert twice per week to serve my congregation and the community of Ponoka town and county. On July 3, my wife, youngest daughter and I finally moved to Ponoka. What a difference it is to wake up on Sunday morning and not have to drive for over an hour. How refreshing it is to see so many of you

every day.

I give thanks to God and to all the people who patiently endured this time of transition and helped us settle into a new community and a new home.

Ministry from afar is not easy. It sometimes feels like trying to pollinate from a distance. It rarely works very well.

There was once a pastor who had been given two young apple trees as a farewell gift from his congregation. It seemed an odd gift until he realized that it takes two apple trees, and of course a lot of bees, to pollinate effectively.

Apple trees are cross-pollinators and they need to be in relationship to other apple trees in order to thrive and bear fruit. At the same time, we can’t emphasize enough the role of bees in making the pollination possible, given the recent concerns with the decline of the bee population.

Christians are also crosspollinators in that God has

brought us together in Christian communities through the cross of Christ to be in relationship with God and with one another. As the Word is faithfully proclaimed and studied within these communities the Holy Spirit creates and nurtures faith and thereby grows the fruits of the Spirit that we might become God’s blessing to the world around us.

Even in our homes, parents can encourage this cross-pollination through family prayer, devotions and Bible reading. However, as a father, I know how challenging that can be with the push and pull of so many activities. Good habits, though, do take time and perseverance to develop and God certainly stands alongside us as we develop these disciplines.

As Christians we were never created to be alone in our journey of faith. God has called and gathered us together that through the Word and Sacraments our faith may be

strengthened and we may be inspired to works of service in Christ’s name.

So how is your connection to the other “apple trees” in our community? Are you a regular cross-pollinator in your congregation? Or are you trying to live this life of faith alone?

The storm that went through our area a couple of weeks ago taught me that trees on their own were more likely to be broken by the wind than those that stood together.

God gathers people together through the Word Jesus Christ and has promised to be among them to announce forgiveness of sins, life and salvation for all.

Perhaps this fall you might consider ways to become more strongly connected to one of the Christian communities listed in our paper and in doing so, may God bless you with the “cross”pollination of His life-giving Word.

Reflections of Ponoka Fort Ostell was a military post for only 50 days

The first settlers in this area would trade their furs and obtain their vital supplies year round from the Hudson’s Bay Company trading post located on the north bank of the Battle River. On April 11, 1885 this busy HBC post was pillaged by a roving band of Cree Indians during a tense and violent time of the ongoing Riel Rebellion across the prairies. After an immediate order from Fort Edmonton, the commander of the Alberta Field Force fortified several strategic points in the Battle River district by dispatching Captain John Benjamin Ostell and Lieutenant Leander Plinquet and 20 members of the 65th Mounted Royal Rifles to the troubled Hudson’s Bay Trading Post.

In the meantime, several battalions of mounted troops were seen on the Calgary to Edmonton trail on their way to Fort Edmonton to be dispatched into hot spots of the upris-

One of the feature attractions at the Fort Ostell Museum is this commemorative model of historical Fort Ostell, a rugged fortress that was constructed in a few weeks at the Battle River crossing to protect the Hudson’s Bay Company Trading Post and the C and E Trail from attack.

Captain Benjamin Ostell of Montreal would play a short but vital role in the earliest settlement of Ponoka and the Battle River District when he and Lieutenant Joseph Leandre Plinquet of the No. 1 Company 65th Royal Rifles marched a troop of 20 French Canadian soldiers to the Battle River Crossing in 1885 to protect the Hudson Bay Trading Post. In only 50 short days, they would build the strong-hold of Fort Ostell to protect against possible uprising and attack during the Northwest Riel Rebellion.

On May 10, 1885, the company led by Captain Ostell arrived and began to establish a fortress for the protection of those at the Hudson’s Bay Trading Post, including Reverend M.P. Scollen’s house, as well as the many travellers passing through the area on the new Calgary/Edmonton trail.

These hardy French Canadian soldiers, who were paid 50 cents a day, began their work immediately, first digging a trench twoand-a-half-foot deep around the HB store and about 200 feet in diameter around all the buildings. Then a moat five-foot deep was dug around the house and connected to the outer trench by means of four canals.

The walls of the trading post were strengthened with additional timbers and 28 loopholes were cut between the logs to allow the men to fire at an invading enemy with relative safety.

The building itself was partitioned into two sections, one for the officers quarters and the other for a kitchen and dormitory, then to further fortify the area, earth from the original trench was piled in the form of a regu-

lar embankment and then an abbittis consisting of sharpened branches was formed on the banks. Strong barricades were also constructed to protect the doors and the windows of the post, while a six-foot-high turf wall was built all around the house above the moat.

A log stable was located within the compound and the only method of bringing horses and supplies to or from the building was across the two canals, both of which were spanned by movable bridges. Four bell tents were also erected within the barricade, one guard tent, a soldier’s tent, the captain’s tent, and a baker’s tent, and also at the rear of the fort was an open oven, while the flagpole was raised in front of the sentry box. This magnificent structure of that early colorful era was completed in only a few weeks, and was named Fort Ostell in honour of Captain John B. Ostell, the Commander of the Royal Rifles. During the period of the construction the 65th Battalion had many visitors, including a steady stream of stages coaches, wagon trains and other travellers on the busy C/E Trail, as well as two more military groups heading for the big

fight in Saskatchewan. After the post was well fortified and blessed by Monsignor Grandin, Captain Ostell established friendly relations with the Stonies of Sharphead’s Band, whom he respected and could depend on, and attempted to procure arms for them to help keep the Bear Hills quiet and to keep the vital road from Edmonton to Battle River open and interrupted. Just how successful the quick and very solid fortifications at Fort Ostell would have been during an actual attack cannot be surmised, as the post was never engaged in a battle with the roving Cree bands, who watched the work of the soldiers very closely, but probably soon realized that any attempt to overpower the fortress was likely impossible.

By June 27, 1885, Batoche had fallen, Louis Riel had been captured, and peace finally returned to the prairies, whose rapidly growing population of settler families would now vigorously get on with building their new homes, farms, and communities, as well as looking forward to a long and successful future in the fertile new land.

Thus the life of Fort Ostell as a military post was only

about 50 days, from May 9 until June 27, after which Captain Ostell and his troop returned to Fort Edmonton to receive new orders, and then later joined their comrades to carry on their duties of protecting the rugged prairies.

Although no visible remains of the historic wood and earth fortress can be seen to this day, the location of historical Fort Ostell would have been located in the farm field just south of the county dump site at the south end of Ponoka. The legal land description for the site of that first Hudson’s Bay Company Post is S.W. 5-43-25-W4th, and an historical marker has been placed at the corner of 42nd Avenue and 66th Street in honour of this most important and exciting chapter of our early history 130 long years ago. This grand and thrilling old Fort Ostell tale has and will always be preserved in our town and county with the long-time prescense of the Fort Ostell Library, the Fort Ostell Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughter of the Empire, and the Fort Ostell Museum in the Ponoka Lion’s Centennial Park, which has a very special corner dedicated to its exciting name sake.

Town can build trust by increasing transparency

Reporter In the last two years of reporting on this new group of elected Ponoka town councillors I have seen them take steps to become more open and transparent.

After a few months in office, council opened up Committee of the Whole meetings to the public, something that hadn’t been done for many years by previous councils.

Residents were also given a voice during public meetings by being allowed to speak for two minutes in a public forum.

Mayor Rick Bonnett recently stated in an interview that council has become more transparent and he is right to a degree. These are important steps in garnering trust with residents. I have also seen the strength of each of these councillors and submit that if they

are unified as a council they can accomplish the goals they set out to achieve.

There has been a difference in the modus operandi of town administration that appears at odds with council’s intention to be more transparent.

I can’t say when it started but there has been a general reluctance on the part of administration to make public reports, well, public. A more obvious example of that was when the town received a report on the state of affairs of its playgrounds.

A request by Ponoka News to see the report has been turned down with staff stating it is a “working document.”

To be clear, staff cannot immediately respond to requests for information without following some process.

Administration is balancing many different jobs such as training new staff, dealing with aging infrastructure while also working on communitybeneficial initiatives such as the Nominate Your Neighbour campaign and being a member of the Communities in Bloom program.

Town staff must be praised for their efforts to keep these plans up and running. It is one of the parts of Ponoka that makes living in this community so enjoyable.

However, for reasons known only to administration, a simple report on the playgrounds in town is something that cannot be divulged.

It gives the appearance that there is something to hide.

While this may not actually be the case, the argument is moot because for most people, perception is reality.

Now when an important document such as the state of the Town of Ponoka’s administrative building is prepared and administration delays its release, the mistrust towards Town Hall increases. It has been over a month since town planners received that report.

Most residents are fully aware that the building is reaching the limit of its life and council’s recent decision to move staff to a temporary location because of unsafe working conditions gives some indication of the health and safety environment of the building.

off the basement and a vague poster apologizes for having no public washrooms. This is all to show that yes, something is wrong with Town Hall, but residents have not been privy to the contents of the report although they probably wouldn’t be surprised with its contents.

Another issue that potentially arises from withholding information, something that administration may not realize, is it tends to create an environment of secrecy. Those who do see the document express how bad things are but this leaves the vast majority of residents without a full understanding of what is happening.

By releasing the report, administration is in a position to guide people and respond to questions to help them understand the true state of affairs of the building. This applies to any report that residents’

taxes have paid for.

Another report on the Ponoka Fire Department was mentioned by administration and was presented to Ponoka County councillors during an informal barbecue/meeting recently.

Requests to see the document were declined by town staff with administration stating, “It’s a working document.”

Ponoka News was told that the report states equipment is in need of replacement. If that is the case then let residents see the full extent of the need.

Is there really something in these reports that administration doesn’t want residents to see? There is no way to determine that unless they are released to the public. Residents should be allowed to make a conclusion based on the facts, not from hints and pieces of information.

Trust in administration and council will continue to wane the more these documents are withheld. Releasing them does two things: it shows residents the direction of administration and creates an actual environment of transparency.

The point is that residents, the ones who are paying for the infrastructure, reports and staff salaries, must be included in the process; it goes a long way in building an environment of trust.

These reports cannot be so confidential in nature that we would have to seek them out on Wikileaks.org — a website that publishes government documents.

Rather than keep them locked away, council and administration will hopefully see the right of things and bring these documents to light. It’s in everyone’s best interests.

Pork barrel politics after all happens during the lifespan of a government with cash in hand. The intention of the Tories, though, is the same as the original definition of that term: to win public support and re-election.

Outside of these promises though, what is it in the Tory’s tenure that suggests a supportive, consultative, mutually respective engagement with provinces, municipalities and aboriginal peoples in the future? Health care, an economic strategy beyond, but not limited to, natural resources, and an awareness of the human impact on climate change: all these involve collective federal and pro-

vincial engagement.

I have no doubt that Mr. Harper is a strong leader, but I’m guessing, like me, he feels at a loss often in large consultative sessions where the introvert in him comes out and competing voices and interests disrupt his agenda. After 10 years in government he's not going to change. We do need a consultative, engaged leader.

Summer reading program thrives at Maskwacis Cultural College

A summer reading program hosted at Maskwacis Cultural College (MCC) is getting kids and their parents into books.

Over the last four years librarian, Manisha Khetarpal has collaborated with the TD summer Reading Club to get kids into reading and the college has collected thousands of books free to use.

Boxes of books line the walls of classrooms at MCC. “Our goal is to keep our children connected with reading for 60 days, five minutes a day,” said Khetarpal.

Using the Cree word “Ayamitah,” which means, “let’s read together” the program has grown to involve Ponoka Elementary School (PES), the Montana School and MCC. The number of young readers who have joined the reading program has increased each year, partly through word of mouth promotions.

“We request people tell four other people about it,” said Khetarpal.

The program brings free books to the library and developed a “library in a box” for readers. Khetarpal said

there are four parts to making the program work: • The MCC gets books donated from many sources; • Using the TD Summer Reading program has helped young readers and parents follow a reading list; • Readers have web access to an online notebook to record notes and observations; • Participants can read books from eReaders.

Working with the other schools has given participants a way to look positively at

Jail sentence for refusing to unclench hands

Failing to open his hands when asked to by a police officer netted Jason George Cattleman nine days in jail and a prohibition from being in any school ground, playground or public park in Ponoka while drunk.

At about 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, RCMP were called to Centennial Park where they found two drunk males trying to pick fights with others in the park.

When the police asked for identification, Cattleman said “What are you going to do? Shoot me?” he then turned and jogged away from the officers.

When the officer caught up with him, Cattleman had his fists clenched and refused to open them when asked. Because of Cattleman's previous record, the officer was concerned for his own safety and used pepper spray to subdue Cattleman. Cattleman was then transported to internment cells.

The crown asked for a sentence of custody between seven and 15 days plus a peace bond prohibiting Cattleman from being in any school ground, playground, or public park in Ponoka for one year.

The defence suggested that part of the penalty for not unclenching his hands was the pepper spray.

In addition he said that Cattleman had made arrangements to go to Poundmakers Lodge Treatment Centre, an Aboriginal addiction treatment centre near Edmonton. Part of the requirements for entry into the treatment program is staying

sober for one week prior to entry.

In sentencing, the judge said to Cattleman “if you would have just listened to the officer and opened your hands, it is likely you would not be in custody.”

In handing down nine days in jail and the 12-month peace bond, the judge said he hoped it would help to keep Catttleman sober so he can get into Poundmaker.

It took eight years but RCMP always get their man On January 26, 2007 at 10:15 a.m., RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision on Highway

53 west of Ponoka.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a semi truck had run into a power pole, and that the driver was still in the cab with live electrical lines on the ground.

Officers instructed the driver to stay in the cab until the power could be turned off.

Once the power was turned off, officers detected the strong smell of alcohol, and found a partially full bottle of vodka behind the passenger seat. They then demanded a breath test and two police officers were required to help the driver to

the police car.

At the police station, breathalyzer readings of .320 and .350 were obtained and the driver was charged with driving while over .08 and given a date to appear.

Now, over eight years later, the driver, Michael Norman Lund, pleaded guilty to the driving over .08 charge and a number of fail to appear charges.

In speaking to the sentence, the defence stated that except for one 24-hour binge, Lund had been sober since 2010.

The judge said “I have to take into account the very high

readings, the collision, the fail to appears, and in my view the type of vehicle you were driving.”

“It's to your credit that you have taken steps to deal with your drinking, but that is mitigated by your failing to appear.”

On the .08 reading, the fine was $3,000 or by default 37 days in jail. On the multiple fail to appears, Lund was sentenced to 10 days in jail on each count to run concurrently. He then received credit for nine days of pretrial custody, leaving one day of jail which was satisfied by his

appearance in court.

In addition Lund is prohibited from driving for one year, and will be under two years’ probation.

Uttering threats via Facebook nets jail time Joshua Martin Howse received a total of 45 days in jail for texting threatening messages to his ex, stealing a friend’s car, and breaching conditions of his release. In addition, he received 18 months of probation, a prohibition from owning or possessing firearms for a period of five years and must provide a DNA sample.

HISTORY OF PROUD SERVICE We had a great turnout at the “Meet the Chief” Coffee at Tim Hortons where Ponoka residents gave new Chief Wilkinson a warm welcome to our community.

The Ponoka Fire Department (PFD) was founded in 1906 and has served our community and area since that time, with pride and professionalism.

We are proud of our volunteer firefighters and staff and thank them for their dedication and community service. They have a proud history of keeping our community safe, have served us well and will continue to be supported by the Town.

PFD firefighters responded to 216 calls in 2014: 82 in the Town of Ponoka, 66 in Ponoka County and 57 to assist Alberta Transportation So far in 2015 the PFD has responded to 131 calls, the majority of which have been fire calls There have been 31 – 911 calls in July alone and 3 have been structure fires

Chief Wilkinson has ordered new turnout gear for volunteer firefighters (jacket and pants required for structural fires) which will arrive in a few weeks PFD is continuing with regular training for members to achieve their 1001 level 1 and 2 – which are professional firefighter qualifications

Belly dancers raise funds for PES playground

Belly dancers with the Read My Hips dance troupe are getting ready for their third fundraiser gala intended to benefit women and chil-

dren with tickets already on sale.

The women’s only event, dubbed the Belly Dance Gala and Fundraiser, brings dance troupes from around central Alberta who will dance the

night away while trying to raise money.

Troupe leader Andrea Ramage said this year they decided to raise funds for the Ponoka Elementary School playground project as it fits

well with their philosophy.

Last year, the group raised over $7,900 for the Parent Link Centre and this year Ramage wants to surpass that amount.

Mike Rainone Hammertime I really enjoy getting out and about and chatting with people of all ages, and I am thrilled that many of them really get a big kick out of occasionally letting loose, roughing it and attempting to do some of the fun-things and adventures that we all loved not that many years ago, or have been dared or challenged by buddies, parents or grandchildren to give it a try. Depending, of course, on our age and our conditioning, wouldn’t it be fun to put together a ‘let’s do it again’ bucket list, and then hope that our bodies respond to our temptations, which we may of course casually attempt at our own speed and schedule?

My dear wife has told me on many occasions to ‘go fly a kite’, and maybe I will, but at the age of 72, I have gone back to bowling and tennis and love it, but I have absolutely refused to go raiding gardens or berry patches, to try water skiing or dance lessons, or to take on the grandchildren at wrist wrestling or lifting weights.

There are also so many new activities at all levels of participation available for all ages that are played both indoors and outdoors, and are great for exercise and maintaining an active mind.

I was indulged in one of my many coffee outings the other day and was very pleased to hear that many families and couples are actually going back to camping the old fashioned way, and because I might even give it a try one more time, I browsed through the internet and found that you can purchase all sorts of tents from the ‘pups’ to those that have three or four

rooms. Going into the website Albertacampground.ca, I was surprised to see that there are still quite a few ‘tenting only’ wilderness campgrounds around our pristine province, some even free, and while they may not have all the fancy services such as electric, water, sewer, cable, and all the rest, it is a whole lot cheaper to spend a night tenting under the stars than forking out up to $50 a night for all those perks. I am sure that for so many of us some of the very best memories came from our first scary backyard sleep out, heading out into the back woods with family or a bunch of buddies and camping beside a stream or lake in the Cypress Hills or Kananaskis country under the shadow of our magnificent mountains, sleeping in lean-tos at the Sylvan Lake Cub and Scout Camp, or pulling the old crank-me-up

tent trailer down the road and stopping when we got tired or hungry. Here are some of the tips we have all picked up along the way about get close and personal with nature while camping under the stars: * Many of our more primitive and closer to nature campgrounds may not be blessed with fancy showers or bathrooms, but as long as they have one or two traditional biffys, the best and most refreshing wakeme-up-shock in the morning is jumping into the lake or stream, then grabbing a hot cup of perked coffee from the old black pot on the first crackling fire of the morning. * Setting up a tent is quite easy and fun if everyone helps out, but first try to find a soft level spot with no rocks or roots sticking up. continued on page 14 www.ponokanews.com

Rain flaps should be tied to a tree so that the water runs off and away from the tent, and bringing along a few tarps in case of a downpour is always a good idea. When we venture out and collect our dry wood and kindling, it should be stacked in an area where it stays dry, and if you have to make your own fire pit, dig out a hole in the ground and surround it with large rocks. It is so easy to rig a tree to tree clothes line and our handy dandy axe or jack-knife are so nifty for fashioning wiener sticks, whistles, whittling, walking sticks, and all sorts of other handy-dandy stuff. * Most families when they go camping always have an odds and ends box full of old pots, a frying pan, grate for the fire, trusty old Coleman stoves and lanterns, utensils, tarps, rope, dry paper, matches, and all the rest.

Other necessary camping gear should include suntan lotion, bear spray, bug spray, extra rain or shine clothes, band-aids, a flashlight, and I guess it will be okay to take along the cell phone. Everything that is cooked on an open fire from pancakes to prime-rib tastes great, even amongst the smoke and the bugs, but please let’s not forget to clear up our left-overs and store our food away, just in case Smokey and his mates are in the neighbourhood. * Greatest treats about camping out together can include hiking in the woods, gathering around the roaring campfire at night telling tales and socializing to the wee hours, and then snuggling up in our sleeping bags at night and listening to the magic and often eerie rumbles and sounds of nature. Ag Society prepares for home, hobby show and ATV safety course

Preparations are underway for another Home, Hobby and Horticultural Show set for Friday, Aug. 21 and 22 at the Ponoka Legion.

Hosted by the Ponoka Agricultural Society, the popular event will bring residents’ submissions of best vegetables, fruits, plants, photography, crafts and other items, explained president Lauraine Weir.

This year, organizers added different age classes within a division to give young children a chance to shine, as well as seniors an opportunity to show off their produce or other items.

“So that people aren’t competing all against one another,” explained Weir.

“The other thing that is new is metal works under crafts,” she added.

Welding artwork is something that can be seen at the entrance of farms with farm signs or other decorations and Weir said organizers wanted to recognize that craftiness.

One thing she is most proud of is the effort it takes to get a submission in to the show.

Weir said people can tell

whole stories on what they did to ensure their best pie or plant did not get ruined on the way. “I’m always in awe of the effort they make.”

She also credits the show organizers for their passion with home cooking and home grown produce as well as home sewing and crafts.

An “Old as Dirt” theme will be part of the displayed items at the show. Weir said organizers are looking for old items such as fair trophies and tools that have been used many times over the years.

Classes for kids There are three classes planned for young kids on Aug. 22. The first is a hobby horse class starting at approximately 10 a.m., then a finger knitting class showing kids how to knit a scarf and in the afternoon a lefse – Norwegian bread – making class.

Ag society hosts ATV safety course The same weekend as the Home, Hobby and Hor-

ticultural Show the Ponoka Agricultural Society is also hosting an ATV safety course for kids aged six to 16.

“We’ve got room for 40 kids. We had kids on the waiting list last year,” explained Weir.

She says with so many kids on the farm using ATVs this course is vital to ensure safety awareness. The morning will start with safety tips and instructions when using an ATV and after lunch participants will be able to try out their new skills in smaller groups.

“When they do this course, they practice some of the things they talked about,” said Weir.

The event is set for Aug. 22 at the Ponoka Legion ball diamond and has a limit of 40 kids and each one will walk away with a new helmet.

Mapping Project, this is a new initiative that will bring more detailed and interactive maps, she said.

The FAO originally created a database of maps and details from 2007 to 2009, but the maps had more generalized information.

Maps will not have landowner names in the details but will show information down to the nearest section of land (640 acres, more or less).

“There is currently no central repository where this type of information is

compiled and accessible to landowners,” said Les in a press release.

These pricing transparency maps will provide a starting point for landowners when they negotiate prices for use of their property for resource .

Les explained that the FAO is accepting seismic and pipeline right of way agreements no older that 2011 and surface lease and transmission agreements no older than 2010.

Ponoka Regional Airport turned into dragstrip for the weekend

Ninety-four cars varying from street legal to the world’s fastest muscle car and 2,000 horse power exhibition cars signed up for the third annual Ponoka 1/8 mile Drag Races over at the Ponoka Industrial Airport.

Gord Wright, one of the organizers for this year’s event, said, “Without all of the volunteers that stepped up to help, this year’s race would have been dead in the water.”

“It’s something that gets in your blood.”

“We simply could not have put the race on without their help.”

He described the drag races as a “heck of a deal for a family, because it’s very cheap entertainment.”

“It’s something that gets in your blood,” said Craig Pateman of Ponoka, who raced his street legal Chevy S10 this weekend.

Pateman took four years and three separate bodies to build his S10 from the frame up. “The original was in pretty bad shape when I started,” he explained.

The motor is a Chevy small block 383.

“I have no idea how much I’ve put into building this truck, but I’m pretty sure I couldn’t afford to build a second one.”

It’s street legal, but Pateman says he doesn’t drive it on the street much because law enforcement tends to raise an eyebrow.

“It’s just too noticeable.”

“What I like most about racing is the camaraderie and fellowship. Yeah, we smack talk each other, but it’s all in good fun.”

Pateman normally competes in the races in Stettler, Castrol (near Nisku), Rimbey and Ponoka, but says, “It’s just a hobby. If I were to do it every day, it would probably lose its attractiveness. “

Over 400 cowboys from across central Alberta descended on Tees for the 40th annual Tees Rodeo last weekend.

The rodeo, which attracts most of its riders from within a three hour drive of Tees, is put on the by Tees Agricultural Society and is part of the Central Alberta Rodeo Association.

Justin Steeves, who has been riding bulls since 2012, scored a 60 while riding Angry Bird, on his recorded bull ride, but then on an exhibition ride managed what most of the cowboys later told him was at least an 80 point ride, riding a new bull called Mancy.

The exhibition does

not count towards points though. “I was asked to ride him, because they knew I would do it. Nobody had been out on that bull and they wanted to see how he would buck.”

Steeves, who works for the highway department in Rimbey, said he started competing because “I was going to the rodeos anyway, figured I might as well ride in them.”

He said he thinks the most dangerous part of bull riding is actually in the chute while trying to get on the bull.

The rodeo started at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 31, and ran until Sunday, Aug. 2. Results for the rodeo were not available at press time.

Ponoka’s slow pitch River Rats team managed a narrow house league win after being down 10-2 after three innings.

The last game of the season for the house league was held Monday, July 27 with the River Rats going head-to-head against the Big Sunny Dingers.

Coach Jessica Kolar said the team was nervous they would have to forfeit the game in the fourth inning. She said in the house league teams play seven innings and if a team is down by more than 10 points they lose the game.

The large point deficit appears to have awakened the team. “We ended up getting five runs on them in the fourth,” said Kolar.

Both teams played a strong offensive game over the next few innings bringing the score to 13-12 at the start of the seventh inning with the Dingers in the lead.

“We’re kind of notorious for battling back,” explained Kolar.

The Dingers were at bat first, giving the last bat advantage to the River Rats, said Kolar. They kept up the pressure and the Rats had less unforced errors than the Dingers, which helped them in the last inning. The River Rats scored two hits earning them the league win.

In Loving Memory Jamylee Jasmine Emes July 11, 1994 - July 7, 2015 Jamylee Jasmine Emes was born on July 11, 1994 in Ponoka, Alberta and passed away suddenly on July 7, 2015 at the age of 20 years old.

She will be lovingly remembered by her dad, Curtis and mom, Debbie, sister, Ericka, brother, Sean. Grandparents, Ernie and Irene Mueller, Mel Emes and Janice Mackie and many relatives and friends. Jamylee was predeceased by her grandmother Sharon in 2005.

Jamylee was a wonderful sister to Ericka and Sean, along with being a constant pillar of strength and happiness for Dad and Mom. On behalf of the family, we would like to express our heartfelt thank you to our relatives and friends who have stood by us in the loss of our daughter and sister.
