Notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, scissors, glue, rulers, calculators, protractors, and compasses. Even smaller stationery stores stock up for most back-to-school needs. LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY These days, a computer is an essential tool for academic work, especially at high school. A visit to the electronics store near you will allow you to give your children the right computer to meet all their needs. If they don’t have what you need in stock, they will order it for you. Don’t forget to equip laptops and PCs with parental control software so that you can supervise your children while they’re on the Web. Be sure to establish some kind of schedule for Internet use so all their spare time won’t be spent surfing or playing video games.

CLOTHING AND SPORTS EQUIPMENT Your children will probably need new clothes to start the year, because they’ve grown or because they’re starting to think about their image. Send your kids to school with a beautiful smile People often forget that oral health is an integral part of their overall health. Not only is it important for one’s self-esteem to have an attractive smile, having healthy, strong teeth allows for more efficient chewing and digesting. That makes for the better absorption of nutrients by the body. Preventive dental care can help to avoid the costs and the pain that come with toothache, especially for children. The start of the new school year is an ideal time to have your child examined by a dentist and cared for by a dental hygienist. As a team, they will encourage your child to renew healthy teeth-cleaning habits, and they will also be able to detect any possible future problems, including physiological problems in the mouth and jaw.
Help your child see the world clearly The start of every school year is a fresh adventure for children, when they can learn new subjects, start exciting projects, and dream about the future. But if they can’t see the blackboard properly or if they can’t focus on the words in their workbooks, they’ll have a hard time getting ahead. It is a good idea to quiz your children about their vision every fall, and, if necessary, bring them to the optometrist’s so that any developing vision problems can be corrected. It is recommended that children aged 6 to 19 years of age consult an optometrist about once a year. Of course, the frequency of these visits depend on the state of a child’s vision-after a preliminary eye examination, the optometrist will be able to determine exactly how often your child should be examined. It is quite common for students to appear to have learning or reading problems, when in fact they simply can’t see well enough to read a book or words on the blackboard. Regular eye exams can prevent that kind of problem. The main vision problems in children are nearsightedness (poor distance vision), farsightedness (poor near vision), and astigmatism (distortion of the image seen by the eye). These problems can be detected during an eye examination and corrected with prescription eye glasses. After that, all you’ll have to do is make sure that your child wears them!

Good oral hygiene entails a minimum of brushing the teeth at least twice a day and the daily use of dental floss. Even that might not be enough for a child; depending on such things as genetics and diet, their teeth may be particularly vulnerable to cavities. While a dentist may advise annual visits for a child with strong and well-protected teeth, he or she may suggest that a child with signs of pre-cavities receive preventive dental examinations every six months. In either case, dentists might suggest regular teeth cleaning, polishing, fluoride treatments, or having sealants applied to teeth in order to prevent cavities.
