As part of their ongoing effort to get those who use the Okanagan’s lakes and rivers onboard with behaviours that will stave off the invasion of zebra and quagga mussels, the Okanagan Basin

Water Board has enlisted the help of a Formula 1 Tunnel Boat Racing Team driver.

Racer Mike McLellan, of Kelowna, has joined the Don’t Move A Mussel initiative in an effort to extend the reach of the educational pro-

His boat is now plastered with the Don’t Move a Mussel logo and he’ll be speaking with everyone he can about the fingernail-sized, freshwater mollusks that have become infamous for clogging the pipes

of water treatment and power plants and disrupting ecosystems.

“It’s something we all have to be aware of and be concerned about,” McLellan said.

“This is a really big issue. There is so much at stake. Okanagan Lake is

so beautiful, and as far as we know it’s mussel-free, but we have to stay on top of this.”

A recent Okanagan based poll by the water basin board indicated that around 70 per cent of area residents are aware of the campaign.

The campaign’s success beyond local borders, remains to be seen.

Invasion of Privacy - Why?

Q:

My mom's a senior, and recently booked an appointment at a new dentist. When she finished that appointment, the receptionist was very insistent on Mom providing her with her cell phone #, email address etc. Although Mom is 80, she does have a working email address to exchange photos with her grandchildren etc. She is worried about getting a lot of 'junk mail' now. Why insist on it?

A:

A large percentage of the new technology available comes under the heading of 'patient management'. This isn't a new method of repairing a tooth, but instead is an improved communication system of keeping in touch with all our patients on an ongoing basis. A full 20% of the population move annually. Frequently when someone moves, they neglect to inform their dental office. Phone numbers change – some give up land lines and rely on cell coverage solely. Email addresses change, and some people have a half dozen of them!

When this happens, the doctor and his entire team are just sitting there for the hour (or however long the appointment was) and that time and expense is never recoverable. It also prevents other patients desiring an appointment, benefitting from these services.

The single largest expense – and one that is subject for discussion – is how to cut down on missed appointments. Dental overhead is high – probably 300% higher than a physician's office. Many dentists now utilize a multiple contact automated system for patient reminders.

When patients leave after a checkup they receive a small business card reminder with the date and time on it. A few weeks before the next appointment they may receive a postcard reminder. The week prior, they receive an email reminder and perhaps a voice mail as well. The day before and morning of – they may receive a text reminder. Even with all of these reminders, some patients still are a 'no show'. Your mom is probably 'old school' enough that she has an appointment book and likely doesn't miss her appointments. I wish everyone was like her! We, in the dental industry, are strictly governed by the B.C. Privacy Act. Her information is safe – they were just setting up their system to remind her in a timely manner. On the same token – we are prohibited by law from even discussing your case with your insurance provider - or anyone because of Privacy Act issues. Please assure your mom her information is safe!

What does it mean to be legally blind?

The term “legally blind” is one that is often misused and misunderstood. Many times we will have patients with very strong glasses prescriptions mention that they are legally blind - but if they are able to be corrected to the normal standard of vision, this is simply not the case. On the flip-side, many people interpret legal blindness to mean a complete and profound lack of sight (e.g. no light perception), but this is very rare. Legal blindness refers to a set of visual findings that have been defined by government to assist with setting guidelines for vocational training, rehabilitation, schooling, disability benefits, low vision devices, and tax exemption programs. Typically it refers to an individual whose best corrected visual acuity is 20/200 (2 lines better than the “Big E”) or whose visual field is less than 20 degrees across (about the width of a fist at arm’s length).

Many legally blind people possess a certain degree of functional vision that allows them to take in visual information and use it in a modified and meaningful way. A term that is perhaps more accurate is “low vision”. An individual with low vision possesses visual limitations that interfere with their ability to perform daily activities. This term is certainly more functional in nature, and helps to guide our treatment and management in a far more meaningful way.

Tween Lakes Resort’s bid for more docks raises water quality issue RICHARD ROLKE Plans to expand a marina on Kalamalka Lake is generating considerable debate.

Oyama’s Tween Lakes Resort has applied to the provincial government to construct two docks with 66 slips. A future second phase would lead to a third dock with another 16 boat slips.

“We want to replace

our existing slip, which is in poor shape,” said Ed Thiessen, Tween Lakes dock committee chairperson.

“We want to meet the needs.”

The resort had 40 slips until one dock was removed.

While the provincial government considers the proposal, the District of Lake Country is suggesting it be denied be-

cause of proximity to a water intake.

“I have had some concerns from residents,” said Lake Country councillor Owen Dickie. “In Oyama, we are feeling the effect of boats on Wood and Kal lakes,” “We should look at a load study to see how many boats should be on the lakes.”

The Tween Lakes plan will be discussed

at Coldstream council’s committee of the whole meeting Tuesday.

“We want to look at it a little more closely,” said Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick. “There is the issue of water quality in Kal Lake. The water flows to the north in the lake.”

Louise Christie, with the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake, points out that

Kalamalka Lake is a main water source for much of Greater Vernon.

“Another 82 boats on the lake, we don’t need that,” she said.

However, Thiessen insists Tween Lakes has done its due diligence and the marina will generate little impact on the surroundings.

“It looks like a viable project from an environmental standpoint,” he

said.

A consultant working for Tween Lakes look at the project and the potential impact on fish habitat.

“Existing habitat information and date, including observations made by an experienced aquatic biologist, indicate that the shoreline and lake bottom within the dock replacement location, provides poor habi-

tat conditions for kokanee and does not support habitat for critical life stages such as spawning or rearing,” states the Tetra Tech EBA report.

It’s not known when the government may make a decision on the application but Tween Lakes hopes to proceed with the marina in early spring.

He also pointed out that he sees more inspection vehicles at boating events.

Increased inspection is something that members of the water board advocate for, with their focus being particularly keyed in on government funding.

OBWB chair Doug Findlater said there are five routes into B.C. from Alberta, and he’d like to see those fitted with mussel inspection units.

Kelowna RCMP are searching for a suspect following a hit and run on July 24 in Lake Country.

Shortly after 6 p.m. that evening, a Toyota Highlander was traveling south on Glenmore Road and was allegedly being tailgated by a white cube van.

The two drivers exchanged hand gestures, and at the intersection of Glenmore Road and John Hindle Drive, the 43 year-old driver of the Highlander left his vehicle and approached the van.

The van accelerated, striking the man and running him over with the rear duals of the van.

Liquor laws loosen up just a little more JEFF NAGEL Wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries with licensed lounges can now sell patrons liquor they didn’t produce.

Until now, a distillery couldn’t sell anything other than the spirits it produces—a glass of B.C. wine was off limits—and a winery couldn’t oblige if one guest at a table wanted

a beer instead of the local grape.

Those lines are erased under the latest change stemming from B.C.’s liquor policy review.

But there will be a limit—a maximum of 20 per cent of sales by a given producer can consist of liquor produced off-site.

That’s intended to keep the focus on unique local offerings.

“We are doing away with B.C.’s archaic liquor rules,” Attorney General Suzanne Anton said, adding the change will give more choice to consumers while supporting B.C. tourism and small businesses.

Craft Distillers Guild of B.C. president Tyler Dyck said the move opens the door for craft brewers, vintners and distillers to cross-pro-

mote each other.

The new rules also apply to special events, so a wedding or other event at a winery or other liquor producer will no longer have to get a special occasion licence to serve alcohol.

Anton indicated more reforms may be coming in areas where “further red tape can be cut.”

Prospects for B.C.’s biggest investment

N

ow that the political backand-forth is over, there are two questions left about the Petronas-led proposal to make the biggest private-sector investment in B.C. history.

Will it actually happen? And is it a good deal or a bad one?

Premier Christy Clark ducked the first question on the day the project agreement for Pacific Northwest LNG was approved by the B.C. legislature.

“After many predictions about the Canucks and the Alberta election, I don’t make predictions any more,” Clark said. “But I can say that this project has gone farther than any of our critics said that it would.”

For what it’s worth, my prediction is on record: It will go ahead.

Lax Kw’alaams Band members could not have had details on that change from an underwater pipeline when they voted to oppose the project in May. Is it a good deal? The mayors of Prince Rupert and Port Edward have made their views clear— they see it as a lifeline for an area that has struggled for years with a faded forest and fishing industry.

The B.C. NDP is also now clear, having voted against the project agree-

ment in the brief summer session of the legislature that concluded last week. Whether the project proceeds or not, this will be a key election issue in 2017.

NDP leader John Horgan and other MLAs made much of the lack of job guarantees, pointing to similar projects in Australia.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman issued a statement with excerpts from the state of Western Australia’s agreement for the Gorgon LNG project. The so-called guarantees contain qualifiers like this: “…except in those cases where…it is not reasonable or economically practical to do so, use labour available within Western Australia.”

Obviously there were no job guarantees, which could only exist in a command economy, in other words a communist dictatorship.

Everyone agrees that

specialized trades such as welding alloys for low-temperature operation will be brought in. And LNG processing trains will be shipped in pre-fabricated from places like South Korea, as they have been in Australia and elsewhere.

Pacific Northwest LNG is on record with federal regulators that in the latter stages of construction, the use of foreign labour for the project could reach 70 per cent. Does that make it a bad deal?

Perhaps B.C. could attempt to develop this expertise from the ground up. It seems to me that was tried with aluminum ship fabrication, and it didn’t work out too well.

For David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance, the question is how many large LNG projects, pipelines and all, can be managed at the same time as the Site C dam is being built? It was skilled labour shortages, and

particularly a shortage of supervisors, that caused Australia to lose some of its proposed projects.

Keane said all LNG proponents here want to use as much local labour as they can, because it’s less expensive and it builds local support. And he disagrees that B.C. is a sweet deal for the industry. Among other things, pipelines have to be built across two mountain ranges.

Not only that, B.C. producers would pay an LNG income tax, which is a first in the history of the industry. Add to that PST, GST, payroll taxes, municipal taxes and federal and provincial corporate income taxes. Add aboriginal revenue sharing, and we have a deal.

Photo op won’t prevent next disaster

U

nless they’re there to hand out paycheques, thankyou gift baskets or actually swing an axe and hold a hose, I could do without ever seeing another politician at a fire.

There’s something unsettlingly contrived about watching one roll into an ongoing crisis wearing their man/woman-ofthe-people wardrobe.

They speak to the front line workers, brow appropriately furrowed and ask, loudly and awkwardly, questions they’ve likely already read the answers to in 15 previously published press releases.

Then, as camera flashes pop, they invariably say, “You’ve done a great job. You’re brave. Marvellous. I could never do what you’re doing.”

Of course, all those things are true. But I can’t help but wonder what these politicians are doing in their real arena of change that would help those brave men and women not be where they are, i.e. not be in harm’s way.

For example, what exactly is being done

But B.C. was once praised for going green with its carbon cutting measures.

In 2007, B.C. set greenhouse gas reduction targets based on the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Since then, they introduced North America’s first revenue-neutral carbon tax and achieved carbon neutral government every year since 2010.

Lest the backslide be forgotten, Clark’s gov-

ernment froze the carbon tax in 2013, and moved climate leadership to the back burner.

And emissions have been rising whether it be in the area of transportation, industry, or natural gas production.

The good news is that our smoke signals have put the climate on the front burner again, so to speak.

There’s now an avenue to weigh in on what we all think should be done to fix things.

The province has launched the Climate Action Consultation. It’s open now and ends on Aug. 17.

Head over to http:// engage.gov.bc.ca/climateleadership/ and click on ‘Take The Survey.’ It only takes a few minutes and “your input can help ensure a better future for all British Columbians.” That’s politician speak, of course.

There’s a good chance it won’t amount to anything—certainly not a photo op. But now, as we watch our valley swallowed by flames yet again, let’s at least feign interest in saving the world. It’s just a click away.

Veterans Affairs commendation for Okanagan Valley teacher

n July 13, our Veterans Affairs Minister Erin O’Toole presented the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation to Kelowna Secondary School teacher Don Bingham.

Bingham is a social studies teacher at Kelowna Secondary School (KSS) and has dedicated a great deal of time and energy to ensure that his students and fellow teachers understand the important place our veterans have in Canada’s history and why we honour them through acts of remembrance like our annual Remembrance Day ceremonies.

He is also the second KSS teacher to be honoured in this way. Last year, KSS teacher Graeme Stacey, who was instrumental in having the story of Hong Kong Veterans of the Second World War included in a resource guide for British Columbia social studies teachers, also received the commendation.

include one reference to trees that are “pleasant to the sight.”

But in the legend of creation, God called the seas and the earth, the plants and the animals “good,” not “beautiful.” As an abstract notion, beauty did not rank highly in biblical priorities.

But then, there’s also no reference in the Bible to God seeking efficiency. Yet humans have spent 6,000 years frantically pursuing that goal.

And there’s not a word about democracy. Or about the privilege of voting. But the industrial nations have waged several very expensive wars trying to induct what they think of as backward parts of the world

into the benefits of democracy.

A young mother made a three-minute video for a church conference. In it, Christine Boyle suggested three questions to guide the church: “Will it make more love?

Will it make more justice? Will it make more beauty?”

Her questions make a whole lot more sense to me than most mission statements.

My church no longer proclaims a heavenly judge who audits our deeds, even our thoughts, and dispenses rewards and punishments. If my church had a three-word motto, it would be “God is love.”

Personally, I would prefer “Love is God.” But maybe either form is too simplistic. If

love, justice, and beauty are all related, perhaps God is an endless circle, where love leads to justice leads to beauty leads to love leads to….

Love finds beauty in a mother’s care-worn wrinkles. Justice frees people to create beauty.

Beauty touches the heart and lifts spirits.

Put another way, ruthless justice that doesn’t care about its victims is not loving, and never beautiful.

What matters is not the creeds one memorizes, or the beliefs one affirms, but how one acts.

How one behaves. How one treats others—all others, including the natural environment.

Does what we do, what we think, what we perceive, lead to more love? More justice? More

beauty?

If it does, then I’m confident that God is there.

Bingham has also forged a partnership with the Okanagan Military Museum to have every Grade 11 Social Studies students visit the museum and be taught by local military experts and have museum representatives visit the school and provide a chronicle of Canadians in Conflict from the Boer War to Afghanistan.

In 2012, he traveled to Juno Beach with local students and has sought

to raise funds to commemorate Kelowna’s casualties of WW II, including a plaque to be inscribed by the students of Kelowna Secondary School and laid at the Juno Beach Centre.

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation was created in 2001.

While intended primarily for veterans, it may be awarded to non-veterans who have supported the veteran community in some way.

Incumbent MP comments on flood of federal grants coming our way BARRY GERDING It’s less about the politics and more about looking out for his constituents. That’s how incumbent Conservative MP Ron Cannan looks upon his past week of handing out federal grants, totalling well over $5 million.

While critics point to the daily photo ops as a Conservative government string pulling to influence votes leading up to the pending federal election, Cannan said it’s more about patience and perseverance.

“A lot of these announcements this past week have taken years to come to fruition,” Cannan said, following a press conference on the Mission Greenway to reveal $249,000 being given to the Central Okanagan Land Trust for the Mission Creek Restoration Initiative.

“You are like a farmer planting a seed, meeting with cabinet ministers,

meeting with ministry staff to inform and persuade of the need to support these funding applications.”

The Mission Creek grant started last year when Wayne Wilson, of the Central Okanagan Land Trust, and Todd Cashin, suburban and rural planning manager with the City of Kelowna, met in his office.

The extended lease for the Kelowna airpoert is another case in point.

“The lease announcement was a unique business case in Canada that required about five years of working through government ministries right up to the PM’s office of why this was important.

At some point, the stars line up.

“It’s like the dog to bone thing, it’s something you just can’t give up on even when frustration sets in. ” While Cannan has heard the criticism about the wave of grant announcements of late, it’s

a no-win predicament for him. “In politics you can’t please everybody, so you do the best you can, act with integrity and know every day you wake up and walk out the door how blessed we all are to live in the Oka-

nagan.”

As of last Friday, Cannan said like everyone else, he’s awaiting a possible election call by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, but his election campaign team is ready to go as the date is set by

legislation for Oct. 19.

To the editor: On August 4th last year, Quesnel Lake residents and communities along the Fraser River watershed were eagerly anticipating one of the largest sockeye returns in recent history. What they got instead was over 24 billion litres of mine waste burst through Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley dam into their watershed.

Mount Polley is the largest mining waste spill in Canada’s history. The consequences and overall costs of this disaster concern us all, including

a steep cost on the industry’s reputation and public trust.

Yet a year later, the mine is running again under a restricted permit.

While both the company and the BC government attempt to be reassuring, many questions remain unanswered.

What are the longterm impacts of the tailings breach on the local ecosystems? Initial water bans warned people not to drink or bathe.

Quesnel Lake rose seven centimeters after the spill and its temperature increased by 2.5 degrees.

The long-term effects of contaminants found in samples will need monitoring. The toxins are of concern to human health, animals and aquatic life.

Despite approval to restart, there are still no long-term plans regarding site clean-up costs, water treatment, and mining wastes management. Locally impacted First Nations and communities are being forced to live with risks and too few answers.

Imperial Metals is still under two investigations that could lead to civil and criminal charges against it, which in turn could lead to costly sanctions or litigations. The public could be left on the hook if the company is unable to pay the bill.

The independent review of the Mount Polley disaster predicted two tailings dam failures every decade in BC. We should not have to ask which two rivers or watersheds are next.

We need to prevent fu-

ture failures by strengthening and updating our outdated mining laws - some of which were written over 150 years ago. The government’s commitment to review the Mining Code is welcomed, but it needs to be broad enough to address the full range of necessary changes.

Mining shouldn’t mean toxic fish and water bans. As we commemorate the oneyear anniversary of the Mount Polley disaster, let’s commit to moving out of the gold rush mentality and into an era of modern, more responsible mining.

Paddlers rally behind co-worker for BrainTrust BARRY GERDING What started out as a fun activity to support a local charity has evolved into a lesson in life for staff members of the Kelowna Capital News.

Four people had signed on as a team for a paddleboarding fundraiser in support of BrainTrust Canada, set to take place Sunday, Aug. 9, at Rotary Beach in Kelowna.

But the purpose behind BrainTrust Canada, to educate and fund research about brain injury prevention and recovery, hit home when one of the newspaper’s production staff, Janice Collier, was hit by a vehicle while on a crosswalk in Vernon on July 11.

Collier suffered severe injuries to her knee, pelvis and ankle along with head trauma that caused swelling in her brain. The vehicle, a Jeep Liberty, was driven by a 92-yearold male who, after colliding with Collier, then sheared off a light standard before coming to a stop.

“It was a pretty sombre Monday morning to come looking to get support to paddle to raise money for brain injury prevention only to find one of our colleagues fighting for her life with a severe brain injury,” said Rob Lindsay, a Capital News advertising rep.

“It brought home to us the importance of what BrainTrust Canada does. The accident was a random thing for someone to get hit on a crosswalk, but it sure made what we were doing, to raise money for BrainTrust, seem a lot more important.

“It’s not just a paddle board race for charity anymore. It will have a deeper meaning for all of us.”

As a result, the Capital News team representation has increased as well with two four-person teams now entered in the event: The Capital News Cruisers—Rob Lindsay, Kevin Parnell, Al Tomi-

The fundraising goal is for each team to raise $1,000, which will work out to $250 a paddler.

Lindsay said he first started paddle boarding in 2011 when the sport was relatively new on the scene. He had a lot of questions about the finer points of the sport and nowhere to find answers, so he took a certified instructor’s course through

Paddle Canada.

“I never really wanted to be an instructor. I just wanted to be able to give good information to people with the same questions I had,” said Lindsay.

Now one of the fastest recreational sports activities in the world, paddle boarding’s roots date back thousands of years.

It’s popularity in the modern era tends to come from Hawaii, where in the 1940s surf instructors in Waikiki would take paddles and stand on their surf boards to get a better view of the surfers in the water and incoming swells.

Lindsay said paddle boarding is a very accessible activity for people of all ages, which is why he encourages anyone interested to take part in the fun race planned for the BrainTrust fundraiser, regardless of whether you have ever stood up on a paddle board.

The event kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with a Moksha Yoga warmup, followed by individual and team relays from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be a barbecue put on for participants from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. by sponsors

Costco and the Kelowna Sunrise Rotary Club.

There will also be other fun family “Twoonie Activities,” face painting and a bouncy house for the kids.

The entry fee is $40 per adult and $20 for youth aged 18 and under.

The minimum age for participation is 7.

There are also significant fundraising incentive prizes at various levels from Costco and the Kelowna Paddle Centre, and a chance to win a round trip for two to any scheduled WestJet destination for those participants who raise $500 or more.

Beaver Lake Most British Columbians are conserving water water back to Water Quality Advisory status The District of Lake Country in conjunction with Interior Health has downgraded the recent Boil Water Notice for everyone using Beaver Lake as a source back to a Water Quality Advisory effective July 30.

Until water treatment facilities are constructed, the Water Quality Advisory is expected to remain in effect.

Recent testing and monitoring has shown water quality has improved and disinfection (chlorine) levels have recovered.

Interior Health recommends that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice. For these atrisk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making juice or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute.”

Turbidity (water clarity) fluctuates on the

Beaver Lake source and times may exceed 1 NTU. Turbidity is a measure of how clear or cloudy the water is and NTU is the unit it is measured in. Particles can interfere with the disinfection process and may reduce chlorines effectiveness.

Turbidity in the good (less than 1 NTU) and fair range (1-5) are invisible to the human eye.

Health risks increase as turbidity rises, particularly for at-risk populations such as newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites can attach themselves to the suspended particles in turbid water. These particles can then interfere with disinfection, limiting chlorine’s ability to remove or inactivate the contaminants.

Many British Columbians claim to be acting to conserve water during this period of extreme heat and lack of rain in the province, a new Insights West poll has found.

However, two-in-five surveyed report seeing someone in their neighbourhood watering their lawn after the restrictions came into place.

In the online survey of a representative provincial sample, 88 per cent of British Columbians with a lawn say they stopped watering it over the past two months, and 86 per cent of those who own a car say they have not washed it.

In addition, 63 per cent of residents claim to be taking shorter showers, 53 per cent are relying on their dishwasher less than usual, and 48 per cent are operating their washing machine less than usual.

Practically all residents (95 per cent) are supportive of the various levels of water use restrictions that have been enacted in the province.

Still, 41 per cent of British Columbians say they have witnessed someone in their neighbourhood watering the lawn, while one-in-four (25 per cent) have seen a person dis-

carding cigarette butts from a car, and one-infive (20 per cent) have observed someone washing the car—including 34 per cent in the Fraser Valley.

BARRY GERDING A Kelowna technology development firm is applauding $1.1 million in federal funding allocated to promote Western Canada defence and security based industries.

try MP Ron Cannan made the announcement July 24 at Helios Global Technologies in Kelowna. It was the first of three grant funding announcements Cannan made that day under the Western Economic Diversification Can-

ada fund.

Helios chief executive director Martin Cronin said their funding will allow opportunities for companies like his to market their products on a global selling scale and collaborate partnerships with other companies.

“Everything we do is resource intensive and highly technical. We need partners…and meeting people face-toface is vital for what we need to do,” said Cronin, citing how the company’s new armourgel impact protection prod-

uct has involved working together with a U.S. major defence contractor for marketing and UBC Okanagan for research.

Cronin said the armourgel product has military capabilities for ballistic and bomb blast protection, and also has

applications now under development for use as sports equipment and in heavy industrial settings.

The $1.1 million, made available through the Western Economic Diversification fund, will be directed to increase the presence of western Canadian defence and security industries at international defence procurement events.

With this funding, CADS (the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries) will establish a Canada Pavilion at eight key international defence and security product showcase trade shows.

The pavilion will be branded, and feature t booth space, a lounge R and private meeth ing rooms. In addia tion, CADSI will de- v velop two trade missions c to Asia-Pacific and/or C South American countries, based on industry p and market priorities. a Cronin said for com- g panies like Helios, it al- a lows them to be subsid- e ized to attend these trade shows and mix with the people they need to meet to sell their services and products.

“It’s a great opportunity to have everyone in one place, and showcase what we in Western Canada in particular have to offer. It saves the time and expense of having to fly all over the world for one-off meetings,” Cronin said.

Tracy Medvy, president of KF Aerospace in Kelowna and a member of the CADSI board, said Canada’s security and defence industry generated $12.6 billion with half of that coming from product and service exports. She added the industry employs 109,000 people across the country in “high value jobs.”

She said the pavilion funding commitment in support of CADSI’s 1,000 corporate members sends a signal that opportunity to expand Canada’s slice of the international defence and security market can be increased.

“When they see that giant maple leaf on our pavilion, it will naturally draw people to us at these conventions,” Medvy said.

“We will be able to meet buyers, network and generate leads through hard work and perseverance—something we Canadians are really good at,” she

1. Council has been asked to consider an Official Community Plan Bylaw Amendment (DLC) Bylaw 927, 2015 which would incorporate an updated Regional Context Statement in the District of Lake Country’s Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 750, 2010 to reflect the Regional District of Central Okanagan Regional Growth Strategy Bylaw No. 1336, 2013.

During the last half of July, two paintings done as a memorial tribute went missing from the boardroom at Beasley Community Centre.

We would really like to have them back in the community’s public art inventory and on display for everyone to enjoy. If you know of their whereabouts (no questions asked), please contact the District of Lake Country at 250-766-5650 or email customerservice@lakecountry.bc.ca
