Central Saanich awaits report on geese cull

Tim Collins News contributor

According to the assistant manager of Visitor Services, Suraj Domeli, the response to the reopening of the highway location has been beyond all expectations. As many as 1,000 people per week drop by the centre, with that number climbing to 1,200 on long weekends. Domeli said the forecast was for about 600 people per week to use the centre. “So far, it’s been really good,” he said. “We weren’t really expecting the numbers we have gotten.” The centre, which is staffed by volunteers, is open from the time the 7 a.m. ferry arrives to after the 3 p.m. ferry sends its passengers shuttling down the Pat Bay.

Canada geese. They’ve been a modern success story for wildlife management -- right up to the time when they became too successful. That’s certainly the case in Central Saanich where this year a pilot program to cull up to 300 of the iconic birds took place in the last week of June and the first week of July. “We’re not quite certain of how many birds were taken during the cull, but we authorized up to 300. We’re just awaiting the final report on the process and its File photo relative success,” said Canada geese have Ryan Windsor, Mayor become a problem in of Central Saanich. many B.C. communities. The geese have now completed molting and the time for a cull has passed. “You have to get them while they are molting...while they are flightless … it’s really the only time that it can happen.” While Canada geese were once in serious decline, the actions of various wildlife agencies and governments have caused a rapid and significant increase in their numbers which are now estimated at nearly six million in North America. In Canada, they are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, although in recent years the Canadian Wildlife Service has issued special permits to use acceptable detent techniques like the removal of potential nesting sites, egg sterilization or, as was the case in Central Saanich, the direct culling of birds.

Denny Warner, executive director of the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, sees opportunity for the extra space outside the chamber’s new home.

Tourists flock to reopened centre Chamber and Visitors Centre benefit from return of highway location Jim Zeeben News staff

A return to its past has proven to be a big boost for the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. In May, the chamber moved from its previous location in an upstairs back office in Sidney to the refurbished visitors centre on the side of the Pat Bay highway in North Saanich. “The response has been overwhelming,” chamber executive director Denny Warner said, about working out of the higher profile location. The biggest change has been the constant buzz of visitors who stream through the building after every scheduled B.C. Ferries sailing. The chamber shares its space with Visi-

tor Services, funded by Destination B.C. For decades, the buildings on the property were something of a landmark for visitors arriving on Vancouver Island until the Visitor Information Centre closed in 2013. “This building has been here since the early 1980s, Warner said. “The decision was made about two years ago to close it -- we just couldn’t financially keep it open anymore.” However, after reviewing its options for the building, the chamber decided to reopen the highway office and instead shutter its Sidney site. So far, the experience has shown Warner that there’s tremendous value in faceto-face communication, despite what she said is the perception that people get all their information digitally.

Festival of India set to spice up Central Saanich Carlie Connolly

A woman applies a henna tattoo to her hand. The tradition is one of the many activities planned for the Cultural and Arts Festival of India, set for the Hindu temple in Central Saanich, Aug. 22 and 23.

News staff

For one weekend in August, a little slice of India will once again make an appearance in Central Saanich. Taking place Aug. 22 and 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the annual Cultural and Arts Festival of India began in 2007 and has been growing each year. Started by three members, Suresh Basrur, Chaman Singla and his wife Chanchal Singla, the idea came about as a way to bring

communities together to learn about Indian culture in Greater Victoria. After the final Victoria Folk Fest was held in 2006, Basrur said discussions began about continuing to showcase

different components of Indian culture at an annual event at the Victoria Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre in Central Saanich. This year, the theme is fairs, festivals and food. Anyone can visit

Councillor Alicia Cormier brought forth the B.C Climate Leadership Plan to council on Monday night, with the motion passed to write a letter with items she would like to see advocated on behalf of the district. The provincial government released a climate action team back in May, and recently put out a climate leadership discussion paper in July requesting the community’s input. The plan focusses on how the province can work together with munici-

age at the end of each performance. This can involve women coming up on stage to learn how to wear a sari, and men learning how to wear a turban. “Participation usually makes it so much more interesting for the visitors. We always have some activities where they are actually participating with the help of our volunteers and they’ll remember that,” Basrur said. “They’ll go home and tell their friends ‘oh we had a great time here because we did this.’ ”

There will also be an opportunity for patrons to take a tour of the temple as part of the festival to see how Hindus worship, what their rituals are and what their altar looks like. A large part of the event is audience participation, which the performers encour-

Greeters also hand out a few flower petals and sprinkle rose water on the guests. The event is free to visitors, with some activities charging by donation. Council approved the addition of lines to the tennis courts to accommodate the growing number of pickleball players who use the court. In addition to this, Councillor Niall Paltiel added an amendment with another line to be added to the tennis court, indicating the height of the tennis net, which was also approved. He said that this was to also compromise with the tennis community, so that they are not just focussed on one sport over the other. The current tennis court in Centennial will now have four different games on one tennis court, but the lines will take a bit longer as it is a synthetic court material and they are waiting for the custom company to paint on the lines.

Multi-car crash on Pat Bay Highway being investigated Ad Due: the road,July causing21st him

A multi-car collision on the Pat Bay Highway caused quite a bit of damage to the cars on scene. Central Saanich police believe that a medical emergency caused one driver to lose control of his vehicle. The investigation however is still ongoing. Central Saanich Police Chief, Les Sylven said the driver was heading north on the highway around 7 p.m. Tuesday night, July 28, when he hit a traffic sign on the side of

to collide with another vehicle which was turning left onto East Saanich Road. The driver making the turn was then sent into oncoming traffic, causing several chain reactions with other vehicles. The man who caused the accident continued on north to Sidney where he hit another vehicle near Beacon Avenue before he came to a stop. Police and emergency crews were on the scene and the Pat

Bay Highway near East Saanich Road was closed until around 1:30 a.m. One of the drivers was admitted to hospital with a bone fracture, the others with minor injuries. Sylven said that they have sent the file off to the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles who will then do a medical review on whether the man who caused the series of collisions is fit to drive.

Rob Szo, pastor at St. Stephen’s, said the religious event is about giving thanks for the variety that God created and the companionship people get from their animal(s). “These dogs and cats are real companions and there is a real bond. It’s just a simple way of saying thank you for creating these animals, they bring a lot of value to my life and its just our way of blessing them and just kind of recognizing their place in our lives,” said Szo. The service will be attended by around 150-200 people, and sees a variety of

animals including dogs, cats, horses, sheep and more. All pets are required to be in a carrier or on a leash. The owner will then walk them outside along the side of the church to be blessed by one of the priests who will go out into the crowd, putting their hand out to bless the pet. The owner will then be given a blessing certificate signed by the priest with the name of their pet on the certificate. There will be music, prayers and readings from scripture for the community to enjoy as part of the celebration, and a collection

will be taken to go towards the Pacific Animal Therapy Society. PATS is an animal therapy program that has volunteers bring their pets to visit hospitals, retirement facilities and many other places where residents can benefit from the interaction with them. There will also be a recording done by Psalm 98 on Aug. 4 with some copies of their CD to be sold at the service, with money also going towards PATS. St. Stephens Anglican Church is located at 7921 St. Stephen’s Road in Saanichton.

OUR VIEW

Practise caution around water Nothing beats the heat quite like taking a dip, whether it’s inching into the water up to your knees, taking a couple of cooling strokes or enjoying a full-blown invigorating swim. And with no end in sight to our unseasonably hot summer, more and more people are taking the plunge this year. Bound on three sides by water, Sidney’s stretches of shoreline entice locals and visitors alike for both swimming and boating. At the risk of putting a damper on anyone’s idea of innocent fun, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first before you venture into or onto the water. Two devastating accidents on Vancouver Island this summer, one at Sproat Lake which claimed the life of a Greater Victoria man and the other which saw a young rugby player visiting from England drown in Shawnigan Lake, underscore the need to remind people of the potential for deadly consequences when playing in or on the water. Last week lifeguards at Recreation Oak Bay set out to reduce the number of water related fatalities by increasing education and awareness towards water safety and drowning prevention. They put on a Drowning Prevention Week Friday Fun Swim offering patrons a chance to participate in the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive Challenge and watch demos from the Junior Lifeguard Camp. The same thing could be done at Panorama Rec Centre. They do a short halfhour Red Cross swim lesson in the Creative Craft & Splash program aimed at young children. So please, be mindful that you can’t take too many precautions on or near the water, whatever the circumstances. And remember, alcohol and water conspire to form a deadly cocktail that always makes the raft appear to be closer or that dive from a cliff less daunting. We encourage you to responsibly enjoy all the pleasures the water has to offer this summer. But take a few minutes while you’re checking your cell phone or waiting for the sunscreen to dry to wade over to redcross.ca for lifesaving advice in, on or around the water. What do you think? A project to make these documents easier to search and read is underway. The town has now both a Facebook and Twitter account and invites comments as well as distributing news and updates. Individual councillors have their own accounts as well. I have found councillors approachable for one on one discussions and I know they are looking for input. I regularly, though not always, attend council and committee of the whole meetings and it’s never crowded unless an issue affects a particular small group. The open house on the new Safety building proposal, surely one of the biggest and most expensive projects being considered by Sidney, attracted 150 people out of an 11,000 population. The recent open house

where the mayor and council sought input on any concerns or ideas that residents may have was very poorly attended when I showed up. Maybe a separate flyer in the PNR advertising these events would help as many don’t pay attention to official announcement ads. but that’s a question for council. So, I would say that, at least in Sidney, there are people listening. The proposal by the Victoria Airport Authority (who are swimming in cash as attending their annual meeting or checking out http://www. victoriaairport.com/library will tell you) are proposing a development that will have a major and long lasting impact on Sidney. Our mayor and

councillors are open to listening so it is up to us to get in contact and let our voices be heard. David Calveley Sidney

Gateway project foolish

Good for you Clive Tanner for your comments about the foolish Sidney Gateway project. Our Sidney council seems not to know who elected them. From my perspective they seem to support builders and developers to the detriment of Sidney citizens. The small town atmosphere is what has attracted people here. What is the purpose of the Official Community Plan, when council constantly accepts variances to the plan. In respect for those who elected them, our council must provide referendums for major projects. There is too much being decided without proper input from the taxpayers. D.R. Mills Sidney

Development will stress locals When I first heard of Sidney Gateway, I assumed that it would be an actual gateway, a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle overpass connecting Beacon Avenue across the highway. Then I discovered, surprisingly, that it was a commercial development plan that would take away precious open green space, Cont’d on page A7

Letters to the Editor Cont’d from page A6 thought to the overreaching problem of accessibility, walkability, air pollution, traffic congestion, and retail pressure. If this plan is approved, we will see huge increases in traffic volume and an increase in air pollution, and lack of safe accessibility to both sides of the highway for cyclists and pedestrians. Already that interchange is showing signs of big city stress. Add to that a constant flow of shoppers, delivery trucks and worker vehicles required for the new retail shops, and we will join the group of communities that have erred on the side of increased development. A case in point to the safe accessibility issue is my recent witnessing of a detached semi going over 120 km/hr through the Beacon interchange. This is startling in juxtaposition to the family I saw crossing the highway by foot later that day - a father with baby in stroller, young boy on a push bike, and his little daughter who, sippy drink in hand, wanted to skip across the highway intersection.

What are our priorities as a community? Negative progress: increased traffic congestion, safety concerns and air pollution? Or positive progress: increased walkability/ accessibility, localized retail, and retention of the community we have now. If, truly, the VAA needs a cash infusion from this deal, I for one would gladly pay more airport fees in order to retain our community as it is, replete with local shops, open space, pastures, clear air, and safe pedestrian/bike paths. Ann Grossnickle North Saanich

Ambiance will be lost Re: The proposed shopping centre across the highway at the airport. I agree with Mr. Tanner, “where will the customers come from?” When we moved to Sidney we boasted that we rarely drive our car. We have three grocery stores, three pharmacies, four banks and several clothing stores. All we could need for daily needs and all within a 10-minute walk from our condo. I suspect several of these businesses will

close and the majority of Sidney inhabitants will have to get in their cars and drive across the highway since the Pat Bay Highway will be an impediment to foot traffic. Sidney is at present a unique self-contained town with a village feeling which attracts visitors from Victoria and elsewhere. All this could be lost with the addition of the airport shopping centre. “The geese have become very destructive,” said Windsor. “They foul our parks and waterways, and the damage that they do to crops can be very significant. That’s especially important in municipalities like ours where agriculture still plays an important role in the economy.” Part of the problem, according to Jeff Lynka, Parks Supervisor for the City of Penticton, is that the geese that are the greatest nuisance are the descendants of geese re-introduced to B.C. in the 1960s and 1970s. Those geese were brought into the region as eggs and goslings and had no natural parents to teach them to migrate. As a result, they simply stay in place, becoming an ever increasing problem. “In the Okanagan, in 2005, several municipalities got together to address it as a regional problem,” said Lynka. “Every municipality also has its own plan but we try to coordinate as much as possible.” That’s the approach that Windsor hopes to see on the Peninsula and in Greater Victoria. “ The CRD Planning Committee recently heard all the information on wildlife management,” said Windsor. “That included not only Canada geese but other nuisance species like beaver and a few others.” The hope is that the CRD will establish a Wildlife Management Service as part of its operation to provide a coordinated and consistent approach to the management of these species. “I’ll be pressing hard for a regional solution to this problem,” said Windsor. “It’s not just an issue for Central Saanich … it’s something we all have to deal with. It’s important that we do it right.”

The two leading causes of fire deaths and injuries among older adults are smoking materials and the misuse of portable space heaters. Tips to remember: Smokers should

Sleep with the bedroom door closed in order to provide more time to escape if a fire occurs. Keep space heaters well-ventilated and at least three feet away from flammable materials. Unplug space heat-

have a designated area away from upholstered materials, such as the kitchen table. Never smoke in bed while reading – it is too easy to fall asleep and print materials are highly flammable.

ers when not in use. Extension cords are for temporary use only and should not be used with a space heater or electric blanket. Never run electrical cords under a carpet or rug. Smoke alarms can save your life! Smoke alarms are inexpensive and easy to install. Ensure there is a working smoke alarm on every floor of the home and outside every sleeping area. Have a friend or relative test your smoke alarm while you are asleep to ensure you can hear it. Once a month, test the battery by pressing the test button. Once a year, change the battery. To clean the smoke alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the unit with a soft brush attachment. Replace smoke alarms if they are more than 10 years old. Fire escape planning saves lives: Develop and practice a fire escape plan. Be sure to include all hallways and stairs. If a fire starts, get out and do not go back in.

Wineries and breweries can now sell each other’s wares.

Wineries, brewers can sell booze they didn’t make Liquor reform helps industry with cross-promotions Jeff Nagel Black Press

Wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries with licensed lounges can now sell patrons liquor they didn’t produce. Until now, a distillery couldn’t sell anything other than the spirits it produces – a glass of B.C. wine was off limits – and a winery couldn’t oblige if one guest at a table wanted a beer instead of the local grape. Those lines are erased under the latest change stemming from B.C.’s liquor policy review. But there will be a limit – a maximum of 20 per cent of sales by a given producer can consist of liquor produced off-site. That’s intended to keep the focus on unique local offerings. “We are doing away with B.C.’s archaic liquor rules,” Attorney General Suzanne Anton said, adding the change will give more choice to consumers while supporting B.C. tourism and small businesses. Craft Distillers Guild of B.C. president Tyler Dyck said the move opens the door for craft brewers, vintners and distillers to cross-promote each other. The new rules also apply to special events, so a wedding or other event at a winery or other liquor producer will no longer have to get a special occasion licence to serve alcohol. Anton indicated more reforms may be coming in areas where “further red tape can be cut.” editor@peninsulanewsreview.com

In Loving Memory of

Betty Jean Barker who went home peacefully, to the Kingdom of God on July 20th, 2015- “If you’re about to throw away your red lipstick, stop,!â€? We have been blessed to have learned valuable, life-long lessons from Betty. Among them are: red lipstick is best, to love fiercely, that our friends were her friends too, to always have a good dinner, to keep your mind and body active by reading daily, and traveling lots, what a davenport is, that homemade food is the best, and that you are better than to eat off of paper plates, to entertain often, to speak your mind even when your opinion might not be the most popular in the room at that time, to climb into the lives of those you love, how to play patty-cake, that a glass of wine daily is good for you, family first, that giving is better than receiving, to say “beg you pardonâ€? when you don’t understand, and “yes pleaseâ€?, in addition to “ I Love youâ€? , to call your loved ones often, to laugh and to cry hard, to never go to bed mad, and to sing your heart out. But most importantly, to trust in our Heavenly Father to lead the way, even through life’s trying times. At 91, her legacy will continue to be emulated by her two beloved, surviving sons: Gene and Ron Mueller, 4 granddaughters, 1 grandson, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild. Betty was born on April 9, 1924 to Ire and Lela Barthalow in Mount Pierre, Iowa. She was the youngest of 4 children. She went to Ottumwa High School in Iowa, then moved to California in 1946. In 1985, she retired from being a file room manager for an insurance company in California, remarried and moved to Sidney, Canada. While she has left behind an enormous amount of family and friends who have loved her (and whom she loved even more), we are thankful that she can now be with all of those whom she had loved and lost over her long and love-filled life. She will be greatly missed, but now has a new room in the kingdom: “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my father’s house there are many rooms‌‌.â€? Thank you Lord for the new life she has with you. We have been blessed to call her mom, grandma, great grandma, great-great grandma, sister, daughter and friend!

DEATHS

DEATHS PETER THORNTON-TRUMP September 24, 1941 – July 25, 2015

With profound sadness, we bid Fair Winds and Following Seas to an adored husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and ultimate friend. Born in Chilliwack, BC and a longtime resident of the Saanich Peninsula, Peter loved being with people. He was kind, considerate, and thoughtful with a keen sense of humour. A gentleman and most gentle man, his passing leaves a huge void in the lives of many including his wife and soul-mate of 28 years, Diane; his son Geoffrey (Isabelle); grandsons Alexis and Leo; daughter Nancy Ruth; sisters Penny (Sam) and Nancy; Godchildren Nick and Meaghan; nieces and nephews; and a lifetime of friends in Victoria and across North America. Peter was adventurous, ambitious, a jack of all trades who mastered so much in his business and personal life. He built a beautiful 25’ classic wooden schooner, operated a successful advertising agency (TTC Design) and loved to snorkel and explore the beaches of Maui. Summer days found him sailing local waters, catching salmon and hauling in fresh crab to be shared with friends. He was always willing to lend a hand whenever needed, and took on many projects for friends. In addition to being a gifted artist, woodworker and craftsman who built his own home, he was a man with many interests including model railroading. Peter and Diane’s families would like to thank their many friends for the endless happy memories, loving support, and comfort in the past and at this sorrowful time. We’d also like to gratefully acknowledge the loving care provided to Pete by the Saanich Peninsula Hospital nursing staff. A service will be held at 10am, Saturday, August 01, 2015 at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive. Victoria. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, or other charity of your choice.

put a down-payment on a camel. What were you thinking? This drought happens every few years but no way are we about to become a desert. Mind you. this business of “climate change” does make a fella’ a bit nervous. My precious big tomato plant gave a final gasp, and produced four small tomatoes, and perished from the effort. I tasted one of them, which tasted like a tomato, but the skin had the same texture as “Scotch tape.” I guess I’m going to have to buy tomatoes this year.

someone under it, of course... a man who didn’t want to get his ally raining here. The trees look happy, the grass already looks fresher and greener, but it’s been such a long time that you’ve forgotten where you put the lawn-mower. Oh dear,

The Snowbirds are the formation flying team of the Royal Canadian Air Force, who have been thrilling crowds with their exciting flying displays for more than 40 years. The BC Aviation Museum is very pleased to announce that the Snowbird pilots will be at the BC Aviation Museum on Tuesday August 11 at 2:30 p.m. If you visit the museum on that day, you will be able to chat with current Snowbird pilots and also some of the veterans of the original Snowbird teams. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the summer months. We are located at 1910 Norseman Road, on the east side of Victoria International Airport. The Snowbirds are in Victoria for an airshow on Wednesday August 12 at 6 p.m. at Clover Point. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds (431 Air Demonstration Squadron) is a Canadian icon comprised of serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Their pilots and technicians work as a team to bring thrilling performances to the North American public. Serving as Canadian ambassadors, the Snowbirds demonstrate the Skill, Professionalism and Teamwork inherent in the women and men of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the Canadian Armed Forces. This year, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain as well as the courageous airmen and hardworking ground crew who sacrificed so much during this difficult time in history. The Battle was waged over a period of just over three months from July 11 until October 31, 1940. Approximately 103 Canadians flew in the Battle of Britain, mainly as members of No. 1 Fighter Squadron RCAF, later renamed 401 Fighter Squadron, and in the Royal Air Force’s 242 “All Canadian” Squadron. Much of their success is owed to the 300 Canadians who served as ground crew and worked around the clock to fix broken aircraft in order to have them in the air for the next attack. The Battle of Britain is commemorated every year on the third Sunday of September.

Downsizing a challenge but help is out there Tim Collins

“They may love a piece of furniture that just isn’t going to fit in their new home, but we help find a new home for that item...with people who will love it just as much.” Deakin works with charities like Herowork to make those connections and help move items to new homes where they will be valued.

News Contributor

It can be a heart-wrenching experience but, for many people, the process of downsizing in preparation for a move to a new residence is an inevitable reality. It’s the point where we look around at the accumulated stuff of life and are faced with decisions about what is truly important. That process can be particularly distressing for the elderly who may find it overwhelming to think about letting go of the items that they have gathered over a lifetime. It’s a process with which Anne Watley, a DFH realtor located in Sidney, is very familiar. “I like to work with the family so that the individual who is moving...particularly an elderly person... sees the move in a positive way,” said Watley. “I have them envision the space that they are moving to and help them realize that it isn’t as scary a thing as they might imagine.” Watley said that it’s important to choose a realtor who will be respectful of the emotions involved. She starts out by talking to her clients about what is truly important to them and how it might find a place in their new home. “They might have a particular piece, like their grandfather’s desk, that they absolutely need to keep. We identify those pieces and start to build an idea of what their new home will be,” said Watley. “After that we can slowly start to talk about what pieces of furniture and other possessions they can part with. It’s after those discussions take place...and it can take a long time...that you can get on with the process of staging

“Of course people can always send their things to auction,” said Deakin, “but that can feel like abandoning something you love.” Yard sales can be even worse, psychologically. “You really need a strong stomach for a sale of that kind as people will tend to come in and say some pretty rude

things about your treasures and then try to haggle a low price for those items.” “It’s a tough process, and it can take a while to accomplish a move to a smaller residence,” said Watley. “But the important thing is to do it gently and with respect for a lifetime of memories.”

Stephanie Deakin of Clutter Clean Services helps seniors make the transition to new homes. a home for sale.” Watley said that the “crash and burn” method of culling unwanted or unneeded items from a home just doesn’t work. “A move like that can be very stressful ...and I have no desire to add stress to an already stressful situation,” said Watley. “I take the time that’s needed and make the process as gentle as possible.” It’s an approach that Stephanie Deakin of Clutter Clean Services follows as well. Deakin is the president of the Vancouver island Chapter of the Professional Organizers of Canada. For 11 years she’s been helping seniors make the tran-

sition to new homes. It’s a process that she’s become very adept at handling. “It’s difficult to make decisions about your own stuff,” said Deakin. “We have emotional connections with things and we don’t see them as clearly as we might. Even when family members try to help that process, they find that they have their own connections to things and they aren’t as impartial as they thought.” Deakin said that an important strategy for helping the elderly let go of much loved possessions that just won’t fit their new life-style is to recognize and honour the value of the items on an emotional level.

Donates $10,000 To Support Wheels For Wellness

Vancouver Island Insurance Centres (VIIC) donates $10,000 to support Wheels for Wellness in the purchase of a new van. VIIC is proud to be an active community sponsor and quietly donated over $130,000 to various non-profit organizations and events in 2014. In 2015 the staff of VIIC voted to support Wheels for Wellness as their primary charitable cause and with the assistance of their insurer partner, Gore Mutual, was

able to make a significant contribution. “This cause is important to our Island communities and helps connect those in need to the medical services outside their area.” says Tony Hayes, CEO VIIC.

Wheels for Wellness is a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting patients to and from medical appointments on Vancouver Island. It was formed in 1997 by the owner of Designated Drivers for the purpose of providing transportation to centralized medical appointments. Since 2005

We d n e s d a y was an important day for Panorama Recreation Centre as NHL’s Senior Manager of Facilities Operations, Mike Craig (top) visited the facility to help paint the Kraft Hockeyville logo on the ice. Mauro Sartori (bottom), maintenance worker at the centre helped with the layout process. The logo is part of an NHL pre-season game this fall that the region won the right to host. North Saanich won the contest, but the game will be played at a larger arena in Colwood.

Wheels for Wellness has transported over 100,000 patients in need and continues to grow each year.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

ENINSUL P A 2015

Photographed on July 17

I

n the tradition of showing a community’s best throughout the day, photographers Steven Heywood and Bob Orchard hit the streets and back roads of the Saanich Peninsula for the Peninsula News Review’s Day in the Life photo essay. They were looking for the people and places that makes the region a diverse and enjoyable place to live, work and play. This is the summer installment of the News Review’s Day in the Life series — we do two such profiles of the community each year, the other taking place in February. We hope you enjoy these images of life on the go across the Saanich Peninsula.
