delves into character back-story Aaron May edited the 12-minute mini-movie The Mary Alice Brandon File Will Johnson Even if you’ve never read the Twilight series and have no idea who Alice Cullen is, The Mary Alice Brandon File is a compelling 12-minute portrait of a woman plagued by visions of the future. Confined to a hospital bed and subjected to electroshock therapy, she has to fight to retain her identity.

“My name is Mary Alice Brandon. I am 19 years old,” she repeats to herself, mantra-like, holding a scrap of paper with the same words etched in pencil.

Grey-hued and somber, the film doesn’t feature a single vampire but somehow retains the spirit of the Twilight saga.

(Mary will ultimately become Alice Cullen, the precognitive vampire and adoptive sister of Edward Cullen.)

The scenes in the hospital, in which Mary is subjected to questioning by a menacing doctor in a lab coat played by Battlestar Galatica’s Michael Hogan are juxtaposed against flashbacks of Mary’s earlier life with her sinister mustache-sporting father.

When she sees a vision of herself being murdered at his behest, she has to figure out a way to escape his clutches.

The film is the final product of a contest Twilight author Stephanie Meyer introduced in 2014 in which she asked female authors to explore her books for back-stories and side-plots that didn’t get examined in her films and books. One thousand 300 participants, including twin sisters Kailey and Samantha Spear, submitted scripts and voters worldwide selected the best six.

When the Spear sisters were selected, they lined up Nelsonite Aaron May as their primary editor. They applied to direct their own movie using the Vancouver casting studio they work for, giving them access to some of the best actors in BC. May was given the chance to work with big studios and special effect crews from Vancouver and Los Angeles. The film then premiered in LA before being posted online for final voting.

The film now has over 2.6 million views online and over 22,000 shares on Facebook.

The pair has been season pass holders since 2010’s Trapped in the Murphy Inn. Mom Genevieve Fortin says it’s the “talent of the cast and the amazing, catchy, witty and funny tunes” that keep them going every year.

For nearly three decades, up-and-coming actors have brought Rossland’s rich mining

history to the stage in a show full of local lore, old time tunes and cancan dancers.

The Follies has created a real culture in the community, always promising entertainment in the dead of summer, said Rossland’s Maureen Holmes, 77, who has never missed a show.

“When they first started it was all about the Rossland kids that were in it like Jeff McLellan, Mitch Bell and Jason Whitley,” she recalls. “And then they started branching out when these kids moved away. It’s been a real treat every summer to come to this.”

This year’s 29th show, Summer is Coming, continues to serve history well. Tales of the startup

Getting child and youth mental health help through new streamlined intake clinics

When it comes to young people, early identification and treatment of mental health or substance use issues can be critical. In my series of articles I have been recommending three main actions for parents who know or suspect their son or daughter is experiencing mental health difficulties: 1. Consult one or more of the informative BC websites and organizations available to you. You can connect with other youth and parents with lived experience through the FORCE at forcesociety.com or through the Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre at keltymentalhealth.ca or toll free at 1 800 665 1822. Other helpful sites are anxietybc.ca, mindcheck.ca, or cmha.bc.ca.

2. Talk to your family doctor — in recent years many general practitioners in B.C. have taken extra training in child and youth mental health diagnosis, treatment and management.

3. Call Service BC at 1-800-661-8773 to find the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) office nearest to you. You can also access the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use service map at: In this column, I want to focus on MCFD’s Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH) Services, which are offered in more than 80 locations across the province, and in particular their new intake process. The process streamlines and standardizes mental health screening and initial assessments for those under 19 years

about potential mental health challenges?

If it is the latter, the intake clinician will continue with a more in-depth intake interview and screening process. All the while, the clinician will talk with you about the best way to meet your child’s needs, whether it is an urgent response, referral to others or acceptance into CYMH services. Those services may include anything from assessment, diagnosis and treatment by a specialist psychiatrist like me, or work with other mental health practitioners such as a nurse or clinical counsellor, especially for specific help like cognitive-behavioural therapy, or group therapy, among many options.

At the end of that first intake meeting you are then provided with a copy of a brief plan for initial supports and services -- all in a couple of hours. While there may still be waitlists for specific treatments or specialized services, the intake process is greatly simplified.

As one parent recently noted about the new intake system: “I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and welcoming this experience has been .... I am grateful to the clinician for making us feel so comfortable and at ease while talking about some really tough issues concerning my daughter.”

This new process is expected to be fully available at all offices by the end of 2015 and will support approximately 80 per cent of BC children and youth seeking assessment through MCFD. For the smaller number of children or youth whose symptoms or concerns are much more severe or complex, the CYMH office may arrange alternative options for the first intake.

This can include outreach, where a CYMH team-member would meet the child and family at home or in the community rather than having on the family to come to them.

Many families who’ve never connected with MCFD previously are surprised to learn that community- based CYMH services have been provided under the umbrella of MCFD for close to two decades.

While family doctor visits, emergency room services, or hospital admissions all fall under the health system, if your child needs further assessment and treatment or ongoing community-based therapy, you may be referred to MCFD’s Child and Youth Mental Health Services.

Psychiatrists, like me, work both with the health authority and MCFD services, depending on whether we see your child in the hospital or in the community through the CYMH clinic.

Over the past 18 months the MCFD began a new intake screening and initial assessment process. Previously, access to services took anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Now, under the new streamlined intake, the process typically takes a few hours.

It works very much like a walk-inmedical clinic. If you feel your child needs help, all you do is show up to the office closest to you with your child during the intake hours. (Teens can show up on their own without parents, if preferred.) The administrative assistant will give you a form to fill out that asks for basic information, including symptoms and concerns. After the information is entered into the system, an intake clinician will review it and meet with you privately to engage in a brief pre-screening interview.

At that time the following options will be considered as next steps: • Is an urgent response (such as hospital admission) required?

• Do you need some more information, parenting resources, and/or validation and support?

• Would a referral to another community service be better suited for your child’s and family’s concerns?

• Or is it appropriate to proceed to the full intake interview to understand more

The beauty of art lies in the eye of the beholder. Certain expressionism isn’t pretty to some, a debatable art form and in some cases a criminal act - especially when it’s street art, also known as graffiti.

So when graffiti becomes vandalism, how can communities counter the defacement of private and public lands?

After the ongoing spate of spray painting on Trail properties, the local youth centre and a West Kootenay artist aren’t turning a blind eye to the illegal practise. In fact they are facing it head on and teaching ways the community’s young members can express themselves with aerosol paint at the right time and in the right place.

Two mural projects are currently underway in both Trail and Salmo for youth aged

13 to 18, offering planning sessions for the design and execution of a graffiti piece that will showcase what the community represents through the vision of a teenager.

“Right now we are brainstorming ideas and getting the juices flowing,” says Coleman Webb, a Nelson-based career artist who’s helped various organizations come up with creative solutions to graffiti that support youth. “Typically my workshops are self motivated. He said by allowing self-motivation, the sense of ownership to the art piece grows and a sense of pride develops by project completion.

“I have found there are lots of kids eager to get involved but if they don’t want to participate, I encourage them to try or sug-

gest they get involved in another way, such as photography, publicity or prep work.”

Painting of the Trail mural is scheduled for Sept. 5, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The final design will be spray painted on three wooden panels then installed on the outside wall of YCDC’s new locale.

The project is twofold – besides highlighting youthful talent, the mural will draw attention to the space which is currently nondescript in the block of East Trail brick buildings.

In Salmo, planning times are scheduled at the Salmo Youth Centre on July 30 from 4 to 7 p.m., with the mural being painted on the back of the building Aug. 29, Aug. 30 and Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Although summer might be close to half way done, there’s still plenty of fun to be had at Pine Bible Camp.

The camp is located eight kilometers north of Grand Forks at 10005 North Fork Road. It’s spread out over 65 hectares and features cabins, a kitchen/dining hall, an outdoor chapel, a 50’ dome tent, and a nearby beach on

the river.

The camp offers both weeklong residential camps as well as day camps for boys and girls with a variety of themes. This year’s camps have once again proved to be very popular, although there is space in the upcoming camps.

“They stay from Monday to Saturday and participate in a bunch of activities such as archery, kayaking, crafts, high ropes course, swimming, wide (group) games and chapel,” said Gene Krahn the camps executive

The camps are divided by age with groups for 8- to 12-yearolds, 11- to 14-year-olds, and a shorter “small fry” camp for 5- to 9-year-olds. There is also a teen camp for 13- to 17-year-olds.

One hundred and fifth in a semialphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Koch Siding is the flat along the Slocan River below the Slocan Park cemetery. While today most people consider it part of Slocan Park, for a short while it was a distinct place.

It took its name after William Carl Earnest (Billy) Koch (18561931), an Ohio-born entrepreneur involved in mining, forestry, and cattle ranching. (His name rhymed with owe.) He arrived in West Kootenay from Colorado in 1896 and took a contract to haul ore from the east side of Slocan Lake.

He also built a sawmill at Ten Mile Creek, and around 1906 established another mill at what became Koch Siding.

When the Geographic Survey of Canada inquired about the name in 1909, Koch replied: “The CPR named it this and when it was made a regular railroad station and they had their tickets made or printed and all of their freight tariffs made out in this name, they

did not care to change same, so when Mr. Breenlief, the post office inspector was in Nelson, and the name came up, he said it was best to leave it this name [or] it would conflict with CPR.” However, the Koch Siding post office opened on Feb. 1, 1906 — before the name was added to the CPR timetable on May 6 of that year, although perhaps the CPR used it unofficially for a while. The post office moved to Passmore in 1923.

Koch eventually sold his mill to the Doukhobors, who built a community hall with quarters for leader Peter (Lordly) Verigin, as well as a large barracks for mill workers. According to Jon Kalmakoff ’s Doukhobor Genealogy Website (doukhobor.org), in 1928 Verigin’s son renamed the settlement Petrovka after himself, but it didn’t stick. Fruit and potatoes were raised at Koch (which the Doukhobors called Kov, a Russianization of the original name).

The name remains in limited use, thanks to Koch Siding Rd. and Koch Creek, but it bears few signs that it was once a bustling sawmill-

ing and agricultural community.

William Koch moved to Nelson and died there.

KEEN This siding on the Kaslo and Slocan Railway was named for Kaslo politician John Keen (18441922). For reasons unknown, it was originally called Adamant, and was included on the CPR timetable as of 1914.

Don Blake wrote in Valley of the Ghosts: “To call Keen a town would be like calling an apple seed an apple. It was really no more than a siding on the railway designed to serve the need of the mines in the 10 and 12 mile creek areas (between Kaslo and New Denver).”

The 1918 Wrigley’s directory of BC listed Adamant as “a flag station on the CPR Kaslo-Nakusp line.”

It first shows up in the directory as Keen in 1923, so presumably it was renamed in posthumous tribute to John Keen.

The name survives in Keen Creek, formerly known as Mansfield Creek after mining promoter Ernest Mansfield (1862-1924).

There’s also a Mount Keen in the Lardeau.

Pierre Cloutier passed through Trail on July 22 as he continued his cross-Canada trek with his wagon train and horses. The Quebecer has traveled almost 5,000 from his home province since November while living the life of a pioneer. Community The Waneta Expansion owners, Fortis Inc., Columbia Power and Columbia Basin Trust, welcomed over 250 Waneta Expansion Project workers and family members to Birchbank Picnic Grounds this past Sunday for a worker appreciation BBQ. Workers along with their families enjoyed a complimentary BBQ, kids activities, door prizes, roving magician, and live performances by the Slocan Union Band and the Foggy Goggle Boys. The owners would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the workers who contributed to the Waneta Expansion.

Police and doctors in Nelson say they’re concerned about a spate of serious drug overdoses in the city in recent months.

“This is my third year in Nelson, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Dr. Nic Sparrow, an emergency department physician at Kootenay Lake Hospital. “I’ve seen six overdose cases since the end of April, four of them critical, and that’s just me. That doesn’t in-

clude cases that other doctors may have seen.”

Recent cases don’t seem related to a specific drug — fentanyl, cocaine, morphine and opiates all appear to be contributing to the problem. In many cases, a combination of drugs and alcohol resulted in individuals needing emergency care “You name it — from acid to crystal meth to cocaine to ketamine, we have seen it in Nelson.

More people are using drugs and definitely more people are selling drugs in our community,” said police chief Wayne Holland.

Museum volunteers make up for missing grant Chelsea Novak West Kootenay Advertiser

The CPR Station Museum is relying even more on volunteers this summer, after the museum didn’t receive the money it needed to help hire a student for the season.

The museum usually receives a federal summer student grant to hire a post-secondary student who helps run the museum’s facilities, but it didn’t get the money this year.

“This year we were not successful, and this usually happens every five to six years,” says Deb McIntosh, manager of the Castlegar Heritage Society. “I think it’s just so that they keep you on your toes.”

McIntosh is working on Zuckerberg’s Island Wednesday through Sunday, and spends Tuesday’s at the Station Museum. Luckily she’s had a number of volunteers step up to help run the museum, and make up for the missing funding.

“We should always have a full stock of volunteers to pull from, just because money is tight and donations aren’t as plentiful as they once were,” she says.

“It’s always good to have people that will come in and give time.”

McIntosh says she thinks the museum will get the grant again next year, but wonders if she should consider applying for other grants as well.

“I probably shouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket,” she says, “but then I don’t want to be posed with the problem of having two students to hire.”

Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance announces 2015–2016 funded projects Over 160 arts, culture and heritage projects—including the Columbia Basin Culture Tour—have received a total of $706,000.00 in funding support for the 2015– 2016 season through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), in partnership with Columbia Basin Trust.

“The CKCA Steering Committee was pleased to be able to supply Trust funding to good projects all across the Basin. We hope cultural organizations will start thinking about activities that will be happening between June 2016 and May 2017 and planning their applications now for the

next funding cycle,” said Jacquie Hamilton, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Chair.

CKCA administers and manages arts, culture and heritage program funding on behalf of the Trust. Funding applications were adjudicated in May by the CKCA Steering Committee, with input from community arts councils.

Support will go toward a wide range of projects, including individual and group projects, master classes, major exhibitions and heritage capital projects.

“Each year we look forward to seeing the list of projects that will bring such cultural wealth to our

region,” said Lynda Lafleur, Columbia Basin Trust Community Liaison. “We have many creative, innovative and hard-working people in the Basin, and it’s their visions and efforts that make our arts, culture and heritage sector so strong.”

CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations realize heritage projects and projects in all arts disciplines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance, media, literature and inter-arts.
