Atypically hot and dry weather is wreaking havoc on the Alberni Valley’s salmon fry population.

While West Coast Aquatic does some salmon fry relocation every year, it’s been especially hectic this year, said WCA’s Sheena Falconer.

“We do Dry Creek every year and then right now we’ve been doing fry salvage for about a month in other places.

“We’re salvaging these fry because the pools are getting smaller and smaller and smaller,” said Falconer.

“We put the traps in the water and we collect the fry from these areas where the water’s rapidly going to dry up and fry can’t remain there.”

Streams like Dry Creek dry up every summer around this time, Falconer said.

“For Dry Creek this is about standard,” she said.

“For other places, it’s a lot lower.”

The lower water levels and the warmer temperatures have had Alberni Valley residents just as concerned as Falconer.

“This year, because it’s so dry, you can see the sockeye returning adults dying along the rivers at Sproat and Somass,” said Falconer.

“It’s all the same thing— really high temperatures, low flows.”

Bodnar has lived literacy story first hand SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

“It was not until my late 20s that I became, what is known to me, as literate.”

Alana Bodnar is the executive assistant at Literacy Alberni. A dynamic woman with a quick smile and an eye for portrait photography, she is a mother, a wrestling supporter (her daughter was a provincial-level competitor and her husband coaches), a photographer and many other things. She has also struggled with literacy since she was a child.

Last year Bodnar decided to put her experiences with literacy to paper and entered her story in a provincial writing contest sponsored

by Decoda Literacy Solutions, answering the question ‘how has literacy impacted your life’. She won second place with her essay.

“I entered the contest

because I like writing and I wanted to share my story,” says Bodnar.

Bodnar struggled with reading comprehension, decoding, writing, copying. “It’s different now than it was then: I would be segregated into a learning classroom. I would be taken out of my English class and taken to sit in a room,” she says.

“Growing up I knew I was not an academic; my spelling was atrocious, my handwriting was messy, my copying skills lacked and when it came to tests, I flunked.”

Bodnar’s family knew when she was young that something was off when it came to early reading comprehension. “I knew right away because her brother could read like a hot damn,” said Bodnar’s mother, Deb Oakes. “She would make up words, jumping all over the story.”

for a learning disability, and she finally was.

Bodnar is hesitant to label it “dyslexia”, as it would have been back then, because the word has such broad use nowadays.

It turns out that a case of encephalitis when she was five years old caused the learning disability.

“In elementary school I

would take out novels on library day. The titles were beyond my comprehension, but I took them out, not to read them, but to bring them back. I needed to be good at something on library day…”

“The school system’s not set up for kids who can’t read,” says Oakes. “I don’t know what the solution is.

PE; why take them out of PE?” “After a series of life changing events, I found myself confined, isolated and bored. I asked a friend to bring me some Archie comics to read. I would look at the pictures and figure out the story. After about a month of this I began to read the words—and they were making sense. I could not get enough Archie comics. I could read.”

Literacy remains important to Bodnar. She started at Literacy Alberni as a board member along with her mother. When an employment opportunity came up she gave up her seat on the volunteer board and applied for the job. She was hired as a receptionist and that grew into welcoming community coordinator and most recently as a fulltime executive assistant.

Bodnar says she is in the best position to guide new learners, as she has first-hand experience with

learning challenges. “I’m not just someone who’s working there, I know what I’m talking about first hand. When learners come in and say ‘you don’t know. I feel dumb, I feel stupid,’ I say ‘yeah, I totally know what you’re talking about. I grew up with a learning disability.’

And then I can talk with them.

“At just over 40, I still have difficulty reading and comprehending everything I read, but I’m still working on it. Sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like if I could read like everybody else. Would I appreciate how fortunate I am to finally be able to read? Probably not.”

But this is her success story, she says. “Everyone is different and everyone has different goals.”

City council voted to ban backyard burning in the city of Port Alberni starting on April 16, 2016. While backyard burning is currently banned between April 15 and October 15 of each year, this new ruling will ban it yearround. Campfires are unnafected by the decisions.

Management review begins

Mayor Mike Ruttan announced that Judy Rogers Consulting Inc. has been awarded the contract for the city’s management review at a cost of $48,300 plus expenses. Ruttan said he expects the cost to remain under the budgeted $50,000 but declined to state exactly what information council hopes to obtain from the report to be released this fall.

Rogers Creek trails get $70k

The city of Port Alberni will receive a $70,000 provincial grant towards the Rogers Creek ravine trail project as part of the BikeBC program. The trails, which stretch from Tebo Avenue and Cherry Creek on the north side of the ravine to the Fall Fair Grounds on the south side, are set to be completed by the end of July.

Expect to see a brand new dining experience at the Italian Hall by October of this year.

“It’s going to be of course a higher end Italian restaurant in keeping with the spirit of the building,” said general manager Elliot Drew.

“We’ll be an 80-seat restaurant downstairs in the basement.”

But Drew said that he and new owner Archie Cardinal— also the owner of Slammer’s Gym—plan to keep the original feel of the building alive.

“The hall has always been a gathering space for Port Alberni,” said Drew, adding that the new restaurant will complement that by

providing in-house catering to events that will continue to be held in the upstairs area.

Adding a restaurant, Drew said, will allow a central part of Port Alberni to continue serving the community for years to come.

“It’s taking the use of the building and what it has been for the last 50-60 years and making it a little bit more streamlined and profitable again,” he said.

“As things stand right now its been through a lot of years and a lot of effort by the Canadian Italian Society and it’s just not tenable for them to continue with it.

Cardinal purchased the building in May after the Canadian Italian Society decided keeping up the facility

was no longer tenable for them, Drew explained.

“We’ve made a really strong business case for it,” Drew said.

While the new restaurant will be the flashiest change, the rest of the building will undergo some much needed renovations.

“The upstairs hall really isn’t changing all that much other than a freshening up and the bones of it which were really in need of attention,” said Drew.

“The plumbing and the electrical aren’t the big sexy things but if your toilets don’t work it’s not a fun time.”

While the initial upgrades will be finished in October, Drew said the Hall will see more upgrades over the years.

The blaze started when a homemade exhaust pipe for the generator that had

Thinking local builds community What does it mean to “think local”?

While this type of initiative asks people to consider changing their shopping habits to support local business, it shouldn’t be just about economics.

Sure, when you spend your hard-earned dollars at locally owned and operated retailers and businesses, more of that money stays within the community.

But it’s more than that.

We’re hoping people who are participating in these programs and supporting these initiatives take “thinking local” one step further.

Thinking local means having consideration for your neighbours.

It means recognizing that your actions have an impact on those around you.

Whether that’s doing more of your purchasing and hiring of services from a local provider, or simply not dropping that empty candy wrapper on the sidewalk, thinking local is about doing what’s best for your own community, and considering that before thinking about what’s best for yourself.

A rising tide raises all ships, after all.

Now, no one is saying we should all stop shopping at big box stores or banking at huge national banking chains.

These businesses have their place within our communities, as well. They employ thousands – if not tens of thousands – of people in the Victoria aea alone, and few would say that’s a bad thing for a community.

We’re just hoping that people take the opportunity, a bit more often, to consider what effect their actions have on those around them, whether that’s where to purchase their next recliner or how loud they need their music to be at 10:30 p.m.

Free trade in milk, eggs, even logs?

ICTORIA – One of the rituals of life in southern B.C. communities is crossborder shopping for certain items.

Even corner store owners are known to pop down to Washington border towns to load up a van with U.S. milk, taking advantage of a price difference generated by our “supply management” system.

The recent slide in the Canadian dollar reduces this pressure in the short term, but the fact remains that dairy producers are propped up in Canada.

And that’s increasingly a problem as Canada pursues entry into the Trans Pacific Partnership, the next big trade deal.

With the U.S., Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other countries involved, it would form the largest trading bloc in the world.

Canada uses tariffs of up to 300 per cent to protect its dairy and poultry industries from foreign imports, and the higher domestic price on milk and eggs is a burden that falls most heavily on poor people.

The industry group Dairy Farmers of Canada and others argue that reducing or removing Canada’s import protection won’t change the huge farm subsidies paid

by European and U.S. governments.

The recent trade agreement between Canada and the European Union has already chipped away at this protection.

The Conservative government is tiptoeing on this issue as a fall election approaches, with rural seats across the country at stake.

But the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand have deregulated their

dairy industries and the Canadian industry is already facing increased cheese imports due to the European Union agreement.

It’s an issue to watch as the federal election heats up. The NDP has positioned itself as a defender of supply management, a particularly touchy issue in rural Quebec, while the federal Liberals are committed to keeping up with the U.S. and joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The trend toward freer trade is broad and long.

The Harper government ended the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board in 2012, and grain growers continue to compete globally. A trade deal with Korea saw tariffs come off Korean import vehicles, and life goes on.

Ottawa regulates the export of private land logs, but only in B.C. This is a long-standing irritant for private land owners, holding the domestic price for premium “J grade” Douglas fir logs below $80 per cubic metre while the price in Asia and Washington state has climbed above $100.

The U.S. has long complained about B.C.’s cheap Crown land stumpage and low domestic log prices in general, viewing them as a subsidy to lumber production.

Indeed, this whole protection apparatus is designed to stimulate domestic milling, although it doesn’t seem to be working. The main investment by B.C. forest companies recently has been buying southern U.S. sawmills.

I got a ticket for a rolling stop at a red light, right hand turn, which I deserved. The fine was $167, less $25 if paid within 30 days. I just read that the fine for throwing a lit cigarette butt out of a car window or throwing it away while walking will be $173, up to $573 depending on the circumstances.

This is imposed by our government that is trying to get some respect for the environment, and keep all the law breakers in hand.

But wait a minute, it costs upwards of $2,000 plus to throw a piece of paper or any debris out of your car window, or discard it while walking at anytime without using the proper containment; it is called littering and the fine is $2,000 fine. Yet the fine is only $173 for almost burning down possibly hundreds of hectares of forest or land and buildings, and the possible life of a human at hand?

I think their priorities all need reviewing as our forest fire predicament continues. I think $5,000 to $10,000 fines

are not unreasonable.

Better wording needed To the Editor,

Re: Online poll question from July 16.

I am writing to suggest that greater consideration be given to the wording of the questions in your weekly online reader poll, Question of the Week. Case in point: the July 16 question was, “Are you satisfied that Port Alberni City Council tabled a motion to terminate the port authority’s contract over the plywood sites?”

The meaning of “tabled” here is ambiguous.

In this context, tabled can mean either “to present a proposal, resolution etc. for discussion” (British) or the opposite, “to lay aside a proposal, resolution, etc. for future discussion, usually with a view to postponing or shelving the matter indefinitely” (chiefly U.S) (source: dictionary.com).

In fact, city council put off making a decision; they kicked the can down the road. While it’s true

the actual meaning of “tabled” could be determined from reading the news story, your online poll is a stand-alone poll with no direct linkage to the story.

Therefore, the results for this question are meaningless.

Third party unnecessary To the Editor,

Re: Motion to table Coun. Chris Alemany’s motion to give notice to Port Alberni Port Authority re Plywood lots A and B. So now we know: we elected yet another crew of dinosaurs to city council and they have agreed to give the port authority time ad infinitum.

Shame on everyone who voted to table the motion to give notice of termination of the port authority’s lease on the former Plywood site. The Port Authority has more than 100 leases on property surrounding our waterfront—these leases are not in the best interests of the city and they dictate what our future will be.

If a leaseholder with a reasonable proposal to use the

land adjacent to Canal Beach for some legitimate purpose that creates jobs and economic activity in the city comes forward, I’d be first in line to support it. But we do not need the port authority in the middle as the actual leaseholder.

Let the business deal directly with the city.

A third-hand situation is just bad business. I was appalled last year, I am still appalled.

Gov’t punishing NDP support?

I fear that the provincial Liberals have thrown Alberni Valley to the wolves, with the Dog Mountain fire fiasco, refusal to utilize available firefighting resources, (Mars Bomber), financial assistance to expand our small airport and giving it GPS capability, and an alternative road to supplement our single lane road out to the rest of the province.

Could the reason be that we are being punished for being in an NDP riding?

What’s up with Port Alberni’s LNG plans?

All I’m hearing, with reference to LNG development in B.C, is “Prince Rupert”.

What about Port Alberni?

Or is Port Alberni’s planned LNG site on Sarita Bay at the mouth of the Alberni inlet a done deal?

Especially considering that in a modern execution of old-fashioned siege mentality, without adequate forest-fire fighting management to protect Port Alberni’s valuable timber resource, to remain viable the community would have no other option but to approve LNG development and whatever else the powers-that-be have planned.

I’ve always wondered exactly what Premier Christy Clark meant when she stated that her “government has big plans for the great little city of Port Alberni!” As it’s often said: Guess we’ll be the last to know.

“It occured on the Ash Main forest service road yesterday (July 26) evening,” said Jenkins.

The RCMP received the call for the motor vehicle incident at about 7:30 p.m. The incident occurred at the nine kilometre mark of the logging road.

“When we arrived on scene we encountered one injured male who was airlifted to Victoria General

Hospital with serious injuries,” said Jenkins.

“Our initial investigation determined that he was actually riding on top of the vehicle... and sustained serious injuries from falling off the vehicle while it was in motion,” said Jenkins. The injuries were considered life threatening at the time of the incident but the RCMP have yet to be updated as to his current condition.

Three trucks and 14 firefighters were called to the fire that took half-an-hour to contain. Crews stayed on scene until 8 a.m. to ensure that the blaze was fully out.

According to Pley, residents shouldn’t be using generators to power their homes in that way.

“It’s more common than we’d like to see and there’s several things that can go wrong,” he said, citing carbon monoxide as another deadly risk.

“You can poison yourself with carbon monoxide,” said Pley.

“This resident had tried to resolve that by building an exhaust system sticking out of the house. So you have fire risk, you have carbon monoxide risk.”

There’s also a risk for BC Hydro workers.

“He was backfeeding into BC Hydro’s grid,” said Pley. “BC Hydro had disconnected the wires but those wires were now live from the house side so instead of power coming from the grid to the house, power was going from the house potentially to the grid and that puts BC Hydro workers at risk when you do that.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Jani Denis was the low handicap low gross winner for the nine-hole ladies in women’s club play at Alberni Golf Club on Tuesday.

Kath Stolth won low net as well as the low putts.

In the high handicap group, Lauralee Edgell won low gross, Carol Jaworski won low net and June Parks had the lowest putts.

Denis had a birdie on No. 3. Pars were had by Doreen Grant on No. 5, Jani Denis on No.’s 1, 2, 5 and 8, Lee Anne Van Lent on No.’s 2, 5, and 6, Marta Williamson on No. 6 and Kath Stolth on No. 8.

Chip-ins were in order for the day as well by June Parks on No. 7 , Kathy Toms on No. 9 and Lauralee Edgell on No. 4.

For the 18-hole ladies, low gross was won by Janice Cross with an impressive 84 and low net was

won by Pat Nicklin with an equally impressive 68. Nicklin was challenged by Barb Sheare for the Challenge Pin and held onto it this week.

Kathy White will challenge next week.

In the closest to the pin challenge, Shirley Goodman won on No. 2 and lucky Gwyn Bowen won on No. 11. The special prize was won by La Donna Knutson.

Next week will be the first round of the Ladies’ 18-hole club championship.

Trinity Knoll proudly holds up the lock of her hair that Steve Connah of Steve’s Studio cut off and will be going to help someone undergoing cancer treatment.

She was excited about getting a new hair cut, a bob.

Arts council loses funding The Alberni Valley Community Arts Council has lost its provincial gaming funding for 2016.

“This is another great loss to

the CAC of $21,990 this year,” Rollin Art Centre administrator Melissa Martin said.

“In the past two months we have been denied $10,000 for

summer student help, and now this devastating news.

Centennial Belles step up with fundraiser for Rollin centre MELISSA MARTIN Arts Around

The Centennial Belles are set to present another fabulous historical fashion show; titled, Symphony in White, on Sunday, Aug. 9 as a fundraiser for the Rollin Art Centre.

This exquisite fashion show, featuring white promenade and tea gowns, wedding gowns and some never-before-seen items, will take place under the canopy of the trees on the terrace at the Rollin Art Centre from 2-4 p.m. Special musical guests include Sandy Bouleau.

Proceeds from this fashion show will benefit the Rollin Art Centre’s many programs that have just recently been cut by the government.

Tickets are $20 and include refreshments.

Fiddlers will entertain at the Aug. 6 tea, while Marilyn Smith will sing some original tunes and play guitar for the Aug. 13 event.
