Local power lifter preparing for next World Championship Birchmans Pereira is off to the Worlds and he’s taking his team with him

ome people think power lifting is simply about being strong, but one local man and his team of around 10 people are here to say there’s more to it than that.

No one knows this to be truer than Birchmans Pereira, 67, a Bower resident, Guinness World Record holder, and power lifting world champion.

Pereira, who has spent the last 56 years in the gym, has been setting world records from a young age, and while he continues to do so he also has a knack for training world champions.

Five days a week from Monday to Friday, Pereira and his team can be found within the walls of Red Deer’s own Peak Fitness.

The mix of Central Albertans on Pereira’s team, ranging in age from 18 to 68, have little in common with one another aside from their individual desires to be stronger and the core common denominator of Pereira training them.

Among the team members is Margaret Ann Estabrooks, 68, who began her power lifting adventure alongside the world champion only three short years ago, and has since gone on to break world records of her own.

While Estabrooks has always lived an active lifestyle throughout her younger days through horseback riding in the summers and skiing in the winter, as she grew older she found herself with a case of arthritis and unable to keep up on a family trip to Prague. “It was hot out and I couldn’t keep up with my daughter she said she thought it was because I wasn’t fit,” explained Estabrooks. “I started going to a personal trainer but never once while I was going to those sessions did I have the sense of feeling strong. “I could barely do the sessions, it was time consuming and expensive - I didn’t like it so I quit.”

The next attempt to reach her personal goal came when she took to the Collicutt Centre where her and a friend would walk the track and use the fitness machines available.

“Every time we would finish for the day I would get off the machines and say how my leg would hurt or my knee – there was always something aching and we had had enough and my friend suggested we try training with Birchmans at that point.”

She remembers her first day at Peak well.

“Right after walking into Peak on that first day, it was obvious right away I wasn’t at the Collicutt anymore - I turned to Mary Anne and asked, ‘Do you think we can get our money back?’

Little did she know, her world champion coach had other plans for her and soon she would be on the world stage winning a few gold medals of her own at the 2014 World Championships held in Argentina.

It was only a few short weeks after her first day at Peak that her rule list flew out the window and she found her feet shoulder width apart and a broomstick across her shoulder blades learning proper squatting techniques.

“The bar itself is 45 pounds so when some one starts out squatting their technique won’t be the best,” explains Pereira on why the broomstick to begin. “I recommend squatting to everyone unless you have really bad back problems.

“It really is the best exercise as it is both aerobic and anaerobic – if you have to squat with just the bar for the first 10 reps your heart rate will go higher than it would on a treadmill for a half an hour.”

Three years after her first day Estabrooks is now dead lifting over 250lbs – to which she says, “Is a lot of weight for a senior! “Power lifting is more than just a

physical strength - it’s about doing your personal best and it requires you to push yourself as an individual and that’s also what Birchmans does when you’re training with him,” she said.

“Partly because of my age I am hesitant at times to push myself, but he’s always there saying, ‘I know you can do more’ and so eventually I try and usually he’s right.”

Estabrooks explained for a senior, there is no better feeling than to be strong, adding power lifting improved not only her fitness level but also her posture, arthritis, and her confidence stating Pereira truly is, “The Dalai Llama of the gym.”

Many would assume training from a world champion would come at a steep price, however Pereira has but a few rules and regulations to train alongside him and none of them have a price tag attached.

Those wishing to be a part of his team must only hold a membership to Peak Fitness and be present at the gym from 4 – 6:30 p.m. if they wish to train with him and there is to be no swearing, no spitting, no phones, no music and no drugs.

When asked why Pereira chooses not to charge people for his training and expertise, he explains a story from his youth.

“When I was young I came to the gym

seven days a week, I thought everything I was doing was right until one day this older man came up to me and told me he felt sorry for me – in my young arrogance I said what do you mean bad for me?”

“He told me I was doing it wrong – he said come work out with me for a while and when you get comfortable you don’t have to anymore.

“Immediately I noticed a difference, my breathing was different, my technique was different – before I was very aggressive with my training and didn’t care how I got it done - I just wanted to do as much as possible as fast as I could.”

Upon informing his trainer he couldn’t afford to pay him, the man replied in return for the knowledge and strength he had given Pereira he must one day pass it along to another. Over the last 50 years Pereira has trained hundreds of athletes and body builders and will be taking his current 10 to the 2015 World Championships this year in Portugal.

“I’m very confident,” said Pereira. “I don’t believe in luck - I believe in hard work, good mental ability, confidence and self esteem – these are the things I instill in my team.”

City releases Citizen Satisfaction Survey

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Red Deerians continue to give the City comparably high marks for a stream of services according to the 2015 Citizen Satisfaction Survey. “This survey provides us with a way to identify if we are meeting the expectations of our citizens,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “It also shows where we need to focus and make

improvements, allowing City council to be responsive to the needs and priorities of residents.

“I think generally speaking, our citizens have indicated that they are satisfied with the overall quality of life in Red Deer.”

For the second year in a row, 98% of citizens say the quality of life in Red Deer is good to very good, says the report. Two per cent felt that overall quality of life

was poor or very poor.

This year’s report also noted a significant increase in satisfaction with snow removal – from 45% to 60%.

Of those surveyed, 22% felt the quality of life has improved in Red Deer in the last three years, and they attributed this to more employment and job opportunities, better roads and economic development and more local businesses.

Eighty-three per cent

said they receive fairly good or very good value for their tax dollars. Of that number’s breakdown, 16% felt they were receiving ‘very good value’, while 67% felt they were receiving ‘fairly good value’ for taxes.

Eleven per cent felt they were receiving ‘fairly poor value’ for their tax dollars, while 5% felt they were receiving ‘very poor value’ for their taxes.

pal government services and crime were also identified as top priority issues that residents felt the City should address over the next year.

Roads were also identified as the highest priority in terms of infrastructure (89%), followed by recreation facilities (61%), water treatment facilities (60%), wastewater treatment facilities (41%); and the transit system (38%).

“This annual survey gives us the opportunity to gauge citizen satisfaction and to compare results from year to year. And notably, we’ve been collecting results for the Citizen Satisfaction Survey since 2006, so the City now has nearly a decade of a very strong baseline to draw comparisons from,” said Veer.

Ninety-two per cent of respondents were satisfied with the overall level of City services, while 83% felt they received good value for their tax dollars.

Veer said that the results help guide council and administration in the crafting of policies and providing government that is, “Citizen-friendly, welcoming, accessible and strategic.

“This survey tool is just one method that we use to measure whether we are

meeting the expectations of our citizens,” she said.

“It helps the City to identify where we can improve our service levels and determine our priorities in moving forward.”

Another survey highlight showed that 31% favoured maintaining or reducing taxes by cutting services while 62% favoured increasing taxes to maintain or expand services.

When asked about the City’s downtown, the most important aspects Red Deerians wanted to see were more green park spaces, more evening entertainment and dining options and more shopping opportunities outside of work hours.

City Manager Craig Curtis agreed the survey is a, “Valuable tool that we use to measure if municipal operations are meeting the needs of residents, and to help direct future operational and budgetary decisions. It gives an excellent snapshot of the community.”

The Survey was conducted over the phone by Ipsos Reid between May 8th and May 28th with a sample of 300 residents aged 18 years or older. Another survey will be conducted this fall. editor@reddeerexpress.com

Hospital parkade nearing completion As construction on the new parkade at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre continues to move towards completion, road work is set to begin around the hospital’s main entrance. Beginning this week, contractors will begin work on the creation of entrance and exit lanes on the new parkade structure. Existing roads and sidewalks around the hospital’s main entrance that were displaced to make room for the construction site will also be repaired and landscaping work will also be completed during this stage.

This work is expected to take six weeks to complete (weather permitting).

In order to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, there will be some temporary traffic disruptions around the hospital’s main entrance.

From approximately Aug. 1st to Sept. 14th, traffic disruptions around the hospital will include access to the hospital’s main entrance and the Central Alberta Cancer Centre will be from the west only, off of 52nd Ave. Vehicles will also exit the site to the west.

The existing patient loading zone will be closed to vehicles. A new temporary loading zone will be created in the Central Alberta Cancer Centre parking lot with shortterm parking stalls available for those picking up or dropping off patients.

Patients and visitors parking in the 39th St. public parking lot can access the main entrance by following marked pedestrian routes along 50A Ave. Street parking will be reopened along 52nd Ave. west of the hospital. Traffic flow on 39th St. will be restored, though street parking remains closed.

OPINION Celebrating the anniversary of #ALSIceBucketChallenge Talk about the community getting behind a terrific cause. It’s been one year since the ALS Society, and those affected by this disease, were given an amazing gift.

Alberta raised a remarkable $2.8 million during the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge, of which funds were allocated to national ALS research and support services within the province.

The Challenge is about to begin once again starting this month.

The Challenge went viral, allowing for ALS to become a commonly known disease.

That’s a critical thing, as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) doesn’t get near the attention that many other diseases get these days. It was also inspiring to see the sweeping support across not only this continent but around the world.

In total $17 million was raised in Canada, with $11.5 million allocated to research and $4.4 million allocated to supporting people living with ALS across the country, according to the ALS Society.

Brain Canada responded to the generos-

ity of Canadians by donating an additional $10 million to the $11.5 million dedicated to research, bringing the total investment to $21.5 million.

Officials say the impact of the Ice Bucket Challenge has allowed ALS Canada to accelerate the national research program as well.

There has been a 70% increase in peerreviewed grant applications from Canadian researchers, and investments have been made in a clinical trial for the drug, pimozide.

Due to the funds raised by the Challenge, the ALS Society of Alberta has also been able to work collaboratively to explore new ideas that will enrich existing programs.

The equipment loan program has been enhanced with the introduction of new technologies, such as a communication device that is controlled by the gaze of the eye.

In addition, the Society has been able to allocate funds for those who cannot afford transportation to the clinic or appointments, and has continued to provide all programs and services free of charge.

An ALS diagnosis can cost a family up to $250,000. Client support services in Alberta aim to ease the financial stress on those affected by ALS by providing communication and mobility equipment at no cost.

Additional support services include home support visits, coordination of care in the community, support groups, support for children through the Support for Champions program and advocacy for the best possible support for people living with ALS. One year after the Challenge took place, the ALS Society is encouraging Albertans to celebrate the remarkable success of the initiative.

ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed. Everyday, two or three Canadians die of the disease.

ALS can strike anyone. It most often occurs between the ages of 40 and 70 but can also occur in older and younger adults, and rarely in teenagers. ALS is usually fatal within two to five years of diagnosis.

The symptoms and the area of the body first affected can vary from person to person.

Typically ALS involves muscle weakness, fatigue, wasting, stiffness, loss of tone, cramping, twitching, and hyper- and hypo-reflexion.

The onset of the disease may occur in nerves associated with muscles of the upper or lower limbs, the throat or upper chest area.

In rare cases, the muscles involved in breathing are first affected. These symptoms can result in decreased coordination in the hands, tripping and falling, weight loss, and difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing.

This past June marked the 12th annual Red Deer Walk for ALS. Over the past several years, in the neighbourhood of $100,000 has been raised at each walk.

Bailouts are clearly far from over for Greece The deep recession that gripped Greece for the last five years has taken the wind out of the national economy and caused an economic train wreck.

The recession has devastated businesses and scarred every Greek family. It is responsible for a contraction in gross domestic product (GDP) of 25%, contributed to a public debt of 320 billion Euros, left thousands of businesses bankrupt, catapulted the national unemployment rate to 26% and left six out of 10 youth out of work.

A trio of international creditors – the European Central Bank, the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund – extended an economic lifeline to Greece in the form of two bailouts

Those bailouts, however, demanded the imposition of austerity measures and a checklist for Greece to clean up its economic act.

The austerity measures included layoffs in the civil service, the realignment of salaries in the public sector with those in the private sector, a one-third reduction in pensions, the extension of the retirement age from 65 to 67 and increases in personal income taxes,

property taxes and the value added tax. Throughout all of this, the Greek economy sputtered along.

Those businesses that did not go bankrupt cut expenses, reduced staff and managed to cope. The Greek people tightened their belts, made do with less and survived the best they could. The prevailing public mood was one of coasting along, rolling with the economic punches and hoping that the Greek economy will recover.

All of this changed on the fateful day of June 29th, when the Greek government ordered the banks to close their doors. It was at this moment that the government and the people of Greece realized the magnitude and severity of the economic crisis. On that

day, Greece woke up to the fact that the economic apocalypse had arrived.

Along with the devastating economic metrics, the Greek economic apocalypse had a human face.

It took the form of depositors lining up for hours to get their daily allowance of 60 Euros from an ATM, seniors queuing up in the 40-degree sweltering heat in order to get their weekly pension of 120 Euros, businesses unable to pay their employees, exporters unable to conduct their financial transactions and tourists cancelling their reservations because of the financial inconvenience.

Faced with little choice, the Greek government made a 180-degree political turn by abandoning its defiant stand against the

austerity measures and reforms demanded by the international creditors. It essentially raised a white flag and accepted the harshest and most punitive measures associated with an international loan.

The Greek people, faced with the reality of a Grexit that spelled the end of their association with the unified currency of the euro zone including the prospects of being forced out of the European Union, took a collective deep breath and reluctantly admitted that a third bailout was the only pragmatic way to salvage a dying economy.

In consequence, negotiations have started this week between Greece and its international creditors for a third bailout worth 86 billion Euros. The auster-

ity conditions for a third financial lifeline are brutal and uncompromising. The sad part of this economic drama is that it will only buy Greece more time. Unless a new economic growth plan is implemented, an enhanced international trade strategy is embraced, a concerted effort to attract foreign investment is pursued and structural reforms of its economic governance institutions are undertaken, Greece will be back at the bargaining table for a fourth handout within five years.

City to receive expected MSI funding from province

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The NDP recently announced MSI funding for Red Deer. Although the funding announced is not new monies, City officials said they are happy the previously promised funding is still coming through.

Municipalities are responsible for over 60 per cent of infrastructure in the country, so cities and communities need the funding from MSI to continue growing our economy and to continue serving our citizens,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “The funds that are allocated in the announcement through MSI on the capital front as well as on the operating front are consistent with the allocation that we were given from the previous government. Now that we have an interim budget that the provincial government is able to put into action – it’s a follow through on those commitments.”

MSI funding is allocated annually and paid to municipalities following legislative approval of the provincial budget. It is allocated based on a municipality’s population, education property tax requisitions and kilometres of local roads.

In 2014, the City of Red Deer received $24.1 million through MSI funding.

The City was expecting to receive $16 million from the province in MSI funding this year as part of the former provincial government’s budget. In March, the PCs also announced Red Deer would see a ‘bo-

nus payment’ in MSI funding of about $8.4 million.

“Then an election was called and the budget was never passed,” said Dean Krejci, chief financial officer for the City. “Once the NDP government formed, they had to do a interim supply bill in order to actually make payments because they haven’t got a budget. As part of that interim supply bill, they are telling us now that they are going to give us that $16 million of MSI funding.

It’s not new additional money but they can act on it now that they have their interim supply bill.”

Krecji added the City needs to get approval from the province in terms of what the 2015 MSI funding can be used for. The City has sent in a number of projects for approval and they are currently under review.

These projects include the relocation of Station 3 for emergency services (project cost is $8.2 million and the MSI funding the City is asking for is $8 million); Station 4 relocation (project cost is $7.2 million and the MSI funding the City is asking for is $7 million); 2015 pavement rehabilitation (project cost is $8.3 million and the City is asking for that same amount in MSI funding); roadway reconstruction (project cost is $6.6 million and the City is asking for that same amount in MSI funding); the 30th Ave. water main construction (project cost is $1.2 million and the City is asking for that same amount in MSI funding); street light conversion to LED (project cost is $5 million and the City is asking for that same amount in MSI funding).

“It usually takes them (the province)

anywhere from three to six months from the time we create them to the time we send them in and they are approved,” said Krecji, adding the City should hear about the approvals anywhere between August and October.

Since the program was first introduced, the City of Red Deer has used MSI funding to realize a number of projects that contribute to the enhancement of quality of life for residents. Examples of projects include the River Bend Water Intake System, pavement rehabilitation and roadway construction projects, such as the Taylor

Drive Improvements Project and the 67th St. and 30th Ave. Expansion Project.

Meanwhile, the government plans to review MSI funding. The current formula in which the funding is determined was done in consultation with municipalities over a two-year period.

“On the whole it is a fairly fair formula and the City of Red Deer has been a strong beneficiary of this grant program,” said Veer. “While there is always room for improvements, we need to make sure Red Deer’s interests are protected.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Bull Skit Comedy hopes to raise $50,000 for new space

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Bull Skit Comedy is hoping for a new home and they are turning to the community for help.

Currently, shows are staged at The Scott Block, but because it is a facility used by multiple groups, Bull Skit Comedy is wanting to have their own space so they can continue to expand shows and program-

ming, said Jenna Goldade, artistic director of Bull Skit Comedy.

“Bull Skit has grown immensely in the last two years. We have gotten to a point that there is so much more programming we want to do for the City with our children’s shows and workshops and adult shows – we don’t really have that opportunity at The Scott Block because anyone in the City can use that facil-

ity. Booking-wise we need a space of our own,” she said. “I think there are a lot of people in Red Deer who want to see comedy and who want to see improv, so in terms of sustaining it, I think we’ll have an audience and I think people want it more.”

To renovate the new space, located at 4940 54th Ave., funding is needed.

washrooms for men and women will cost $20,000; tables, chairs and a newly constructed bar will cost $10,000 and a new HVAC system will cost $15,000.

In turn, donors can have their name on the donor wall of the facility, they can also brand the chairs in the theatre for a year, they can also qualify to have a private show and donors can even have a chance to name the new theatre.

All money raised during the campaign will go towards purchasing these items. Goldade said the goal is to raise $50,000 for the project. So far about $17,000 has been raised. The group is hoping to have the funds raised by Aug. 6th.

Meanwhile, Goldade said she encourages people to donate to the cause so that Bull Skit can continue to provide comedy and improv to Central Alberta.

“People get a chance to be part of the first ever sketch comedy and improv theatre in Central Alberta,” she said.

Care and Community for the Elderly

Walking up from the sidewalk, it looks like a regular family home nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood.

Upon opening the front door, warmth and busy kitchen smells waft out- baking muffins and freshly peeled cucumbers.

Tanner, a tiny fluff ball and pet therapy dog, lifts his head but then decides to quietly return to his nap. Stepping into the Community Care Cottages on Dempsey Street in Red Deer feels like you are visiting grandma’s house, not a nursing home.

Community Care Cottages are private nursing homes providing continuing care accommodations for the elderly. As a private facility, they offer an alternative to institutionalized care with an emphasis on family living, community, and, both, choice and voice for seniors in Alberta.

There are two elegant and professionally decorated homes in Red Deer and one in Edmonton. Each home has an onsite doctor and round the clock nursing services. Funding for enhancements at Kerry Wood Nature Centre

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Red Deer’s Kerry Wood Nature Centre will be receiving interior and exterior upgrades over the remainder of the summer thanks to grants from the federal government, the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer and the Twilight Homes Foundation.

MP Earl Dreeshen, announced Monday on behalf of Candice Bergen, minister of state for social development, that the federal government will be providing Waskasoo Environmental Education Society with a $50,000 grant.

The funding came from the community accessibility part of the Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF), which began in 2007 with the 2013 Economic Action Plan designating $15 million per year to go towards ensuring better access to facilities for all Canadians regardless of their ability.

“Accessibility is crucial to ensuring even more Red Deerians and visitors to the City can access these great facilities,” stated Dreeshen.

“Accessibility is something we all too often overlook – whether it be getting into your car, getting

around on public transportation or entering a building, these are all things we so often take for granted.”

The $50,000 from the federal government was complimented by a combined $140,000 donation from the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer and the Twilight Homes Foundation of Red Deer.

The $190,000 will go towards the improved accessibility of the Kerry Wood Nature Centre which will include adding automatic doors to the facility, ensuring all areas of the facility are wheelchair accessible and addressing general accessibility issues within the facility.

Also being constructed at the facility in mid-September thanks to the funding will be the Kiwanis Harmony Gardens – an interactive and accessible musical playground/park.

Todd Nivens, program coordinator for Waskasoo Environmental Education Society explained the playground would be built to allow people of all abilities access to the park, while tying into the idea that music is an essential developmental tool for children.

between different modes of learning and is a really good place of common meeting for people of all ages and abilities.”

Construction on the Kiwanis Harmony Gardens will begin the third week of September with the opening of the park taking place in early October.

Report to the community on homelessness The City of Red Deer has released its annual ‘Report to the community: Homelessness Initiatives 2014 – 2015’.

“We continue to maintain our goal of ending homelessness,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “And we are making considerable progress.

While our work isn’t finished, this report highlights that we are clearly moving in the right direction.”

Details about homelessness and housing options are described in the report, which has a combination of statistics from the previous year, and stories that describe real life experiences

from people who have experienced being homeless in Red Deer.

The report also shows significant progress in community efforts to end homelessness, with 581 individuals housed or supported through the Outreach and Support Services grant and the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS) grant this past year.

DON’T DRINK & DRIVE Provinces must step up efforts to reduce impaired driving Impairment-related crashes remain the leading criminal cause of death in Canada, claiming almost twice as many lives as all forms of homicide combined. Despite that, provinces are failing to implement comprehensive legislative measures that have been proven effective in reducing impaired driving crashes, deaths and injuries, according to MADD Canada’s review of provincial legislation.

The 2015 Provincial Impaired Driving Report assesses major elements of each province’s impaired driving laws and identifies areas where reforms can be made to reduce impaired driving. This is the sixth Provincial Impaired Driving Report compiled by MADD Canada.

“Canadian and international research have identified best practices in impaired driving legislation which will reduce impairment-related crashes, deaths and injuries,” said MADD Canada Chief Executive Officer Andrew Murie. “It is disappointing that provinces have not adopted these measures in full. Instead, they are implementing them in piecemeal fashion, or not at all.”

The 2015 Provincial Impaired Driving Report assesses provincial impaired driving laws based on 20 criteria within four categories of impaired driving legislation: Graduated Licensing Programs (GLPs) and Extended .00% BAC Limits; Short-Term Roadside .05% BAC Administrative Licence Suspension (ALS) Programs; Drug-Related ShortTerm Roadside ALS Programs; and Interlock Programs for Federal Impaired Driving Offenders.

PROVINCIAL RANKINGS

Alberta led all provinces, with a score of 17 out of 25, based on the strength of its recently updated short-term roadside suspensions and vehicle impoundments for drivers with BACs of .05% and higher, and its interlock program for individuals convicted of federal impaired driving offences.

Still, areas for improvement remain, including increasing the minimum driving age to 16; extending the .00% BAC requirement for all drivers to three years beyond the completion of the GLP; introducing a prohibition on any illicit drugs for all GLP drivers, similar to the .00% BAC requirement that these drivers are subject to; and a minimum 24-hour licence suspension for drivers reasonably believed to be impaired by a drug, based on failing a standard field sobriety test.

Québec and New Brunswick had the lowest scores, with just 11 out of 25.

In Québec, the relatively good results achieved on its GLP and extended .00% BAC for new drivers were negated by the province’s lack of any ALS program, and shortcomings in its interlock and drug-impaired driving legislation.

New Brunswick scored reasonably well on its GLP and its extended BAC requirement for drivers beyond the GLP. However it scored poorly on its interlock program, which is not currently mandatory for all federal impaired driving offenders, and its ALS program, which does not include a provision for short-term vehicle impoundment.

impaired drivers. Very few provinces have short-term licence suspensions for drug-impaired drivers, and no province currently has a prohibition in its GLP to ban illicit drugs for beginning drivers.

In previous years, MADD Canada included the Territories in its legislative review, particularly when impaired driving statistics and rates were included in the review and assessment process.

For this review, however, which is based entirely on legislative performance, the decision was made not to include the Territories. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the impaired driving legislation in the territories has lagged behind that of the provinces and requires a major overhaul. “Clearly, more needs to be done if Canada is to reduce the human and financial toll taken by impaired driving,” said Murie.

MAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF FENTANYL

As a result of a traffic stop, the Lacombe Police Service arrested a male for possession of a significant quantity of cocaine, fentanyl and marijuana.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opiate drug which is approximately 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine.

It is used legitimately as an anesthetic in hospitals, or for pain management in the form of a prescription.

Fentanyl has become popular in the sales of illicit street drugs both as either a cutting agent or substitution for heroin or in the manufacturing of counterfeit oxycodone pills. These counterfeit pills containing fentanyl are becoming increasingly available in communities in Alberta.

Shay Clark Tangerman, 27, of Red Deer has been charged with numerous criminal offences including three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking

and possession or property obtained by crime.

Tangerman was also wanted on outstanding warrants and was held on $5,000 bail with his next court appearance scheduled for Aug. 6th in Red Deer Provincial Court.

POTENTIAL DOG THEFT IN CITY Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to locate a six-month-old Blue Heeler-Lab cross named Hope, who is believed to have been stolen from her owner’s yard last week.

Hope went missing shortly after 4 p.m. on July 22nd after being secured in her back yard in the Michener Hill neighbourhood. She is microchipped and wears a tag with her name and her owner’s phone number. Hope is black and white with grey on her face; she knows her name and will come when called.

If you have found this dog, take her to the SPCA; they will be able to use her microchip to reunite her with her owners. If you have seen Hope or have information about her location, contact

POLICE URGE PUBLIC TO AVOID MISUSE OF 911 Every month, 911 operators in Red Deer receive a large number of hang-up calls they are required to follow up on; many of these hang-ups are misdials from businesses, others are from children who have been given old cell phones to play with. Beyond the 911 hangups, Red Deerians also place numerous non-emergency calls to 911 each month, including calls about missing pets, noisy neighbours, vehicle break-ins that happened hours or days earlier, and a complaint about a dead cat in the street.

911 is for police, fire, or medical emergencies when immediate action is required: someone’s health, safety or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress.

According to Alberta’s Emergency 911 Act a person who contravenes section 8 (‘no person shall make a frivolous or vexatious call’) is

guilty of an offence and liable; for first offence, to a fine of not more than $5,000, and for a subsequent offence to a fine of not more than $10,000.

Prosecution for an offence under this Act or the regulations may be commenced within two years from the date of the contravention but not afterwards.

You can also be charged with mischief under the Criminal Code.

ESTABLISHMENTS CHECKED On July 10th, the Red Deer Public Safety Compliance Team (PSCT) paid unannounced visits to 10 drinking establishments in Red Deer to ensure establishments were meeting all licensing and safety requirements; the PSCT checks for violations such as over-serving of alcohol, serving of underage patrons, fire code violations, and to ensure establishments aren’t exceeding their occupancy limits.

During their checks, they discovered that one business licence was expired, as well, one business received a warning regarding a licencing issue, several establishments received warnings for Gaming and Liquor Act offences and one food truck was temporarily closed.

Alberta Health Services issued numerous warnings and will be following up with those establishments.

RCMP LOOK FOR WOMAN INVOLVED WITH FRAUD Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify a woman who made a number of purchases on a stolen credit card, then attempted to access her victim’s bank accounts using the victim’s stolen identification.

The female suspect used a credit card and personal identification from a purse that had gone missing on July 17th and may have been stolen from Holy Family School that morning. The woman attended the victim’s bank, produced the victim’s identification, and requested access to her bank account.

The bank did not comply and alerted the victim, who

discovered a number of purchases had also been made on her credit card at various Red Deer businesses.

Red Deer RCMP obtained surveillance footage of the suspect and are asking for public assistance to identify her. She is described as approximately 40 – 45 years old with long blonde hair, wearing sunglasses and a white jacket. She was seen driving away from the bank in a white SUV. Art Alley artists looking forward to making an impact

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express The Art Alley project is underway again with three talented local artists rejuvenating a wall of Fratters Speakeasy.

The initiative is a partnership between the City of Red Deer and the Downtown Business Association (DBA). Its goal is to promote positive social impact by adding vibrancy and culture to the downtown, encouraging more activity and enjoyment.

“Street art initiatives are thriving in cities across North America and throughout the world,” said Project Coordinator Steve Woolrich.

“Projects such as this support public art and revitalization but more importantly have the potential to create social change.

When we create more public art – in this case, street art – we entice people to get out and see their community and this generates more activity on our streets.”

This year Christine Karron, Brian Usher and Bryan Heimowski have been chosen to decorate and liven up the space. The wall has portraits of several influential musicians from across a variety of genres, eras and cultures.

Karron said the project is exciting because it’s challenging her to work outside of her own ideas and style. “I’m used to working alone. I’ve been painting and drawing all my life, and I’ve always done it myself. The challenge for me is to now work with others. I’m not one to walk in and say that we’re just doing it my way – I want to work with the others to combine

our talents and make something,” she said.

“It’s a positive challenge. It’s a chance to work with people and to do not only my style, but to share it with someone else and see how it looks in the end. We have no idea how it will look in the end and to me that’s amazing. I’m so excited.”

Usher was also excited for the opportunity to learn something new and to leave a mark on his community.

meaningful connections and an opportunity to give to their community.”

I’ve not done anything on that scale before so this seemed like a good opportunity to approach that. I’ve done a few large-scale pieces on canvas, but this is a chance to build on that. Also, Bryan Heimowski is a graffiti artist so I’m hoping to learn from aerosol skills from him.”

Heimowski was unavailable at the time of interviews, but will return to Red Deer in August to contribute to the project.

Theo Fleury in City to host ‘Victor Walk’

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Former Canadian NHL star Theo Fleury led a small sea of orange around Red Deer’s downtown core late last week.

The people sported t-shirts clad with the word ‘victor’ during their walk in which their aim was to raise funds for victims of childhood trauma and encouraging victims to become victors by engaging in the online conversation started through Fleury’s Victor Movement.

Following Fleury’s career in the NHL, the former Calgary Flames’ right wing co-wrote his autobiography, Playing With Fire – in which he detailed his account of being sexually abused by former coach Graham James.

Since the release of his book, Fleury has developed a career as a public speaker and founded The Victor Movement and has conducted various Victor Walks such as the one held last Thursday in Red Deer.

Both Fleury’s Victor Movement and Victor Walks aim to raise awareness around childhood trauma while also advocating for change and providing access to resources to aid in healing such as counseling.

“Almost everything I’ve learned in life has happened to me through the game of hockey, and I’ve learned that nothing in life happens by coincidence,” said Fleury while standing in front of the Red Deer Arena where he began the local Victor Walk.

“Now that I’m done playing hockey my life has become about helping people get to where they need to go – I always thought I was a hockey player, but this movement is what I was put here (on Earth) to do.

“Whether it be through storytelling and helping them to tell their own stories or

helping them find the support they need – I’m blessed to have had the career in hockey I have, but I really think it was preparing me for the role I’m in today and this place in my life.”

Funds raised through Victor Walks go to support the Breaking Free Foundation (BFF), with BFF director Amber Craig stating the Foundation’s mission is to provide survivors of traumatic life events with the treatment and support needed to reclaim their lives.

She added not only do they hope to support those in need, they also hope to be a trusted online hub where victims may connect with others and tell their stories.

“This whole movement is really important and tying together the Victor Move-

ment and the Breaking Free Foundation gives people a safe space to open up,” explained Craig.

“People are slowly catching on to what we are doing and I think it’s going a big way to break down the stigma so people are coming forth more and more to tell their stories.”

Fleury and the Victor Walk made several stops across Alberta including Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton, with the first Victor Walk taking place in 2013 when Fleury and a group walked from Toronto to Ottawa over 10 days.

Local swimming options over the years Since time immemorial, whenever hot weather hits in the summer months, people’s attention turns to taking a cooling dip in a nearby body of water.

In the Central Alberta area, people often head to one of the beautiful lakes in the region – places such as Sylvan, Gull, Pigeon and Pine Lakes.

However, for those in Red Deer itself, in the early years, people had to look to Waskasoo Creek or the Red Deer River as places to go swimming.

There are always dangers to going for a swim in a river where cold water and currents can cause unexpected problems.

Hence, many people chose to go swimming near the mouth of Waskasoo Creek, where the water is

DAWE deeper and the current is not quite a strong.

Another popular spot was near the traffic and railway bridges across the river.

Again, the water is somewhat deeper at those spots, and the bridge piers provided some protection from the currents.

There are always those who like a challenge and a bit of danger.

Hence, older boys would often try swimming near the rapids by the Red Deer

Golf Course. There were accidents, but fortunately, there is no record of any of those brave souls drowning at that spot.

Waskasoo Creek does not have much current and was, therefore, a much safer alternative to the Red Deer River. However, in the summertime, the creek can turn brown in colour and develop a less than pleasant odor.

When the Parkvale subdivision was first developed in the early part of the last century, the developers, Michener and Carscallen, decided to build a dam across the creek and create a small lake.

For a while, the spot was a place to go for a swim or go canoeing.

However, the little lake soon developed such a bad

In the summer of 1908, J.R. Cowell, the former editor of the Red Deer Advocate and the first clerk of the Alberta legislature, complained about young boys swimming in the creek near his residence.

As it turned out, Cowell’s main objection was that the young swimmers almost never had bathing suits on.

He asked that Town council consider passing a by-law, “Making the wearing of bathing clothes compulsory within the Town.”

The councilors thanked Mr. Cowell for his concerns, but declined to pass such a bylaw.

By the time of the First World War, City council began to consider the construction of a public swimming pool.

In 1919, there was a serious proposal to construct a recreation centre, including an auditorium, gymnasium and a small swimming pool as a memorial to those who had lost their lives in the War. However, the post-War years were times of economic hardship.

The citizens of Red Deer did build the Cenotaph, but the idea of the memo-

rial recreation centre was dropped. During the hot, dry years of the 1930s, swimming in the river became so popular that public safety became a concern.

Consequently, a lifeguard was hired for the summer months using funds donated by the Rotary Club.

The lifeguard’s post was on the bridge abutment on the north side of the river.

An alternative to using the river was an old lumber mill pond in North Red Deer (now partially restored as Bower Ponds).

The water was fairly deep, clean and safe, particularly after the new Card sawmill put in a small dam in the 1930s.

Hence, the site became popular, particularly for younger children.

Finally, in 1949, Red Deer finally constructed its first formal pool on 49 St. a bit east of 48 Ave. It was an outdoor facility.

Many of the users found that swimming in it was often a bracing experience.

Nevertheless, swimming in the river and Waskasoo Creek became rare as the public preferred to use a formal pool.

ENTERTAINMENT The YoungFellas are out for a ‘rock and roll’ good time

BY SARAH MAETCHE Red Deer Express Much like the perfect musical cocktail, add in one part classic rock, four parts musical ingenuity, a big dash each of hefty guitar riffs, funky grooves, soulful vocals and a forever-young spirit and there you have it - a perfectly balanced, yet slightly off-kilter band, the YoungFellas.

A strange brew, yes indeed, but they just might suit your musical tastebuds.

Birthed from the close-knit music scene in Lacombe, the YoungFellas (Andrew Galloway, lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Dalton Case, lead guitar and vocals; Jordan Galloway, bass and vocals and Dane Blacquiere, drums) are attempting to rocket to success through live shows and an upcoming EP. It was well over two-and-ahalf-years ago. Andrew had just moved back to his hometown from Toronto. The future was seemingly bleak, but the musical landscape was about to change.

“It was my drummer and I actually who had the very first jam,” explained Andrew. “We met outside one of the Lacombe bars and we got together, I think, the next night and had a jam. I was jamming with Dalton a little bit later and he was wondering, ‘Hey, do you know any drummers who are looking for something to do?’

And it just so happened I met one three days ago and it all came together.”

But their history goes deeper than that. As Lacombians and frequenters in the burgeoning local music scene, the foursome have been playing in various groups since high school, with one key element tying them together, drummer Blacquiere.

“I played with Dane in two other bands before this,” said Case of the highly versatile drummer.

“That’s exactly how I looked at him. He was the Neil Peart of Lacombe,” said Jordan of refer-

encing the legendary Canadian drummer from Rush. “Then he (Andrew) came up to me one day.

I play an assortment of instruments and now I play bass in the band.”

The origin of the moniker YoungFellas, may also be one of those obvious glaring-you-inthe-face titles, but like most good times and stories, it began at a drinking establishment.

“We were all at Under the Hill (the now defunct Lacombe venue) when it was still around,” said Case. “We played our first show there didn’t we?”

“We came up with the name before the show,” clarified Andrew. “We were just hanging out there and some old guy was like “Yo, what are you young fellas doing?’”

“And they kept calling us young fellas everywhere we went,” said Jordan. “Everyone of us got called a young fella at least once throughout the night.”

“So, we were like, ‘That’s a good name’,” laughed Case. And that youthfully, endearing name just stuck.

And while some may view them as young, they’ve been working hard to earn their keep in the music scene, hitting the road as often as possible.

The YoungFellas’ influences on the surface may be obvious to most classic rock lovers —Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd - but their influences are more deeply seated than the average rock and roll cover band.

“We are pretty diverse,” said Jordan. “We all have a classic rock influence - that’s our home base, but I love playing jazz music, saxophone, classical.”

And like most good stories, songs pleasing to the ear usually form from impromptu jam sessions. Such is the case for their radio hit Buzzin.

“We really like to exaggerate stories,” said Andrew.

“We look inward for an idea, come out with something unrealistic and then put it all together,” added Case.

Their journey over the past few years has had many triumphs. In 2013 the YoungFellas won Rock 104’s Rockstar Search Battle of the Bands, where the prize was a free recording session for one song and the chance to open for Canadian legends Prism.

Since then, they have become very much a road band - a merry bunch of weekend warriors who have earned their stripes through local shows and pounding the pavement to Calgary and beyond.

“We wrote the songs like a year-and-a-half-ago and we have been playing them solid since, so they kind of feel like they are getting old to us,” explained Case.

They attribute the name Old Times With YoungFellas to their honourary fifth member and local producer Simon Quick. An unofficial EP release is planned for this August.

But despite ‘the old times’, the YoungFellas are currently working on some new material and have just released a new song Now and Then, which is one of the featured tracks on the upcoming EP. “We are trying to branch into

some other stuff,” noted Jordan.

“We have a ballad kind-of song and we haven’t done anything like that before. I play saxophone on it.”

So where will the locally-famed ‘weekend warriors’ go next? Maybe to follow the path of the Sheepdogs, gracing the cover of Rolling Stone? Perhaps embarking on a major tour? Whichever, the future is bright, but at the most it will be a good time.

Local blues-rock artist reflects on recent honour

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Charlie Jacobson was recently honoured with the City’s 2015 Emerging Artist Award for his works as a talented singer/songwriter.

The Red Deer Arts Council gave out their first award in 2014 to recognize exceptional emerging artists in the community. Jacobson won the title this year, and was also presented with a certificate and $1,000.

“I got the call as I was on the highway, I think I was headed through Radium. I got a personal call from Diana with the Arts Council

and I was very pleased, and very honoured to be recognized by the Arts Council,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson is currently on tour and is set to release his first full, self-titled album in the fall of 2015, featuring Russell Jackson on bass, Donald Ray Johnson on drums and David Vest on piano.

Jacobson said that in the last few years he has averaged about 150 shows per year, and that he has begun to branch out of Alberta and into the rest of Western Canada.

He said, “I’ve been building a fan base that’s been

growing steadily over the last few years. I’ve been getting a lot of support, especially from musicians and role models of mine.

They’ve really helped me a long the way. In the last year, I’ve been experiencing bigger crowds and more of a familiarity with my music. There’s a little bit more positive energy that way.

“Generally, I just try to keep my nose to the ground and keep working hard and stay alive,” he added with a laugh. Jacobson has been performing his whole life and started off in a family band with his parents.

Since he was 17 he has participated in blues/rock bands. He grew from playing small church concerts, to outdoor events and now he tours bars and clubs across the western provinces. “I always knew in the back of my mind that I was a musician. That’s where my strength and talent lay.

I tried other things growing up as kids do, and I had odd jobs to make money along the way, but I always knew I was a musician. Being raised by musicians, it almost became my trade,” he said.

“I love making music and I love being my own

boss. I try not to take that for granted. It means a lot to have the support of the community and to be able to pursue my music and keep on keeping on.”

The Red Deer Arts Council received funding for the award program after the City hosted the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards Gala in 2013. The event raised money that was to be allocated to a project in the mandate of promoting and encouraging artists in the local area.

The award can be given to anyone in the arts community, from performers in

music, dance and theatre, to visual artists who practice photography, painting, sculpture and more. As well, filmmakers and short story writers are some of the many artist categories that can receive funding.

“I’d like to say thank you to the Arts Council and to the community for supporting me and for the award.

I’ll be putting that money to good use and spreading the good word about the arts scene in Red Deer.”

Looking back at his formation for a career in comedy, one of the key moments came in high school when he was asked to read announcements because the valedictorian couldn’t show up. Just reading the material didn’t seem like much fun, he recalled.

Edwards opted to throw a funny spin on things and the audiences quickly appreciated his approach.

His humour, which delves into the oddities of everyday situations, has also been showcased on A&E’s Comedy Hits the Road, CTV’s Comedy Now, CBC’s Comics, The Multi-Cultural Show, The Prime Minister’s Show, Sleeping With The Elephant and The Halifax Comedy Festival (resulting in another Gemini nomination).

Bedtime routines are important for adults, too I have terrible sleeping habits.

Terrible. I have arrived in my business life that I have a little more flexibility in my schedule. I work at home as much as I work in the gym, if not more. It’s pretty great, because I get to see my three-yearold more, and I can fit in my training for Ultraman each day, usually twice a day.

This is possible because I have amazing staff, and enough systems in place to allow that the flexibility. The challenge is, I tend to then stay up too late, and then I don’t get enough sleep, but more importantly, I sleep at odd hours each day.

I started the year working to get at least eight hours of sleep a day, to at least get that going. It was okay and worked for a while, but as I research more and more I realize now that getting eight hours of sleep isn’t enough.

It’s also about when you sleep too and sleep pattern issues can lead to body fat storage as well as energy issues. If you are a parent, you know this.

The other day our three-year-old was, for various reasons, late going to bed. REALLY late. Like, after 10 p.m. late (bedtime is 8 p.m.)

I am here to tell you that our wonderful little boy was a nightmare. He was jumping around, yelling, carrying on, having fits, and fighting us at every turn. He was telling us that he wasn’t tired, he didn’t want to sleep, he didn’t want to sleep here, or there, he wanted this, or that. It was so tough!

We knew that he really needed to just get to bed and get to sleep so that the next day we could get him back on schedule.

When he is on his schedule, he is awesome! He is happy, reasonable, and a great little kid. When he is off schedule, he is a little bear.

I believe that adults are the same.

The body is always running on rhythms and budgeting hormones and fuel supply. If our use of all those resources is completely random, the body has a hard time predicting when to release hormones and regulate energy.

We all have a natural circadian rhythm and some of us are night owls, and some early birds. True, but we can also all adjust, and whatever your natural version is, consistency seems to play a role.

If you are a night owl, but one night you go to bed at 10 p.m. the next at 2 a.m. then midnight, then 1 a.m. then 11 p.m. then your body doesn’t know what to do.

When should it release sleep hormones

Watching TV or a computer screen late into the night can have an effect too, because you suddenly realize it is late and turn off the bright light (that simulates sunlight) and then try to go to bed, but the body takes time to shift the hormones over

so you might fall asleep right away, but it likely won’t be a great quality sleep for a while. Then you wake up tired after the third or fourth snooze button press.

By turning off electronics an hour or so before bedtime, the body has a chance to realize it is night and power down.

Another interesting bit of research is that sleep happens in cycles of 90 minutes. So when you go to bed, try and set your alarm for a multiple of 90 minutes.

Interestingly enough then, 7.5 hours is better than eight hours! By getting 7.5 hours sleep, you may awaken feeling better than if you slept another 30 or 60 minutes,

because at eight hours, your alarm goes off in the middle of a sleep cycle and all your body wants is more sleep.

If you have been sleep-deprived for a while, try going to bed at a consistent time for a few weeks and if you can, no alarm clock, wake up when you wake up.

After a few weeks, you should re-regulate. My wife and I plan to get on to a 7-11 plan for the next month and see what it changes. Up at 7 a.m. and getting ready for bed by 11 p.m. (sleeping by 11:30 p.m.)

But the writer asked for a copy of what she had just signed, read the fine print (interestingly, she could read the fine print) and now has second and third thoughts about the dangers involved.

According to the National Eye Institute, by age 80 half of North Americans either have a cataract, or have had cataract surgery to replace a foggy lens.

The lens allows light to pass through the eye to focus on the back part of the eye, the retina, which then sends images to the brain.

Aging is the main cause of cataracts.

Diabetes and glaucoma increase the risk. So does exposure to strong sunlight such as living closer to the equator. High altitude also plays a role as the people of Tibet have the highest rate of cataracts in the world.

Many people don’t know they have a cataract in its early stage.

And since cataracts normally grow slowly, some people can live for years without significant effect on vision.

But when symptoms first occur, the lens has become tinted, making it difficult to identify blues and purples.

For instance, you may think you are wearing a pair of black socks, only to be told by friends that you’re actually wearing purple ones.

Others complain of the glare of headlights, sunlight too bright, or a halo around lights.

This patient in question believed she only needed reading glasses and this may be the case.

But if a cataract is present, interfering with her daily activities such as reading, driving or watching TV, then cataract surgery is the only effective treatment for her.

Some patients worry that delaying cataract surgery will result in longterm damage to the eye or make the operation more difficult. But this is not the case, so there is rarely any hurry to rush into surgery.

Besides, some people never need an operation and can be helped by new glasses or better lighting.

The writer is correct in wondering about the risks, however.

As with any surgery there’s always the risk of infection or bleeding problems. For instance, surgeons may ask you to temporarily discontinue any medication that may cause bleeding during surgery.

Cataract surgery also increases the risk of retinal detachment, a potentially serious complication that

One sign of this problem is a sudden increase in ‘floaters’ or cobweb structures that appear in the vision.

Ms. X can be reassured that if an operation is truly required, the risk of complication is small and the majority of patients have better vision.

There’s no sure way to prevent cataracts. But decreasing exposure to sunlight by wearing sunglasses, eating fruits and vegetables is believed helpful. And be sure to wear protective glasses for tennis and other sports to prevent traumatic cataracts.

Does the use of vitamins help? Some researchers believe Vitamin C is a protective agent in vision. The cornea and lens of the eye have the highest concentration of Vitamin C in the body.

In one study, those with low blood levels of C had 11 times greater risk of developing a cataract.

In another study, those who took Vitamin E reduced cataract risk by 50% to 70%. This is why I take natural Vitamin E and high doses of C daily.

At 91 I have had no cataract surgery.

So I hope Ms. X is now an informed patient and realizes that the development of a cataract need not be a rush to surgery.

Rather, surgery is done only when quality of life is affected.

Bucs’ penalties a factor in loss over the weekend

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The Central Alberta Buccaneers took on the Fort McMurray Monarchs last Saturday in Lacombe at the ME Global Athletic Park for the Alberta Football League game of the week.

The Buccaneers, who were fresh off a 66-6 victory against the Lloydminster Vandals, with Monarchs having effectively conquered the Airdrie Irish 100-0 in an all out shut down.

Despite a strong defensive start penalties throughout the game saw the Monarchs slowly gaining points on the board against the hosting Buccaneers ending the

first half with a score of 23-3 for the visitors. The Bucs first three points came from a successful 30plus yard field goal from defensive back Tyler Johannesson following a massive catch and run from running back Tanner Green.

The first half saw the Buccaneers offense struggling to tie plays together with heavy defense coming from the Monarchs bench.

With a comeback still in sight for the Bucs going into the second half, they hit the field hard with the offense gaining yards early in the third. The team’s defense also caught a break as they saw the opportunity to take down Monarch’s quarterback Carson Williams.

However following a missed tack-

The fourth quarter saw Johannesson in action again with a monumental interception of a pass from the Monarch’s quarterback making his way 83 yards down the field to cross the line for the Buccaneers and score the team’s only touchdown of the day making the score 26-9 with 7:09 remaining in the game.

The final score of 33-9 came for the Monarchs following an interception by the visiting team, which they returned and successfully converted.

“We did a better job of playing with a bit more urgency and we were certainly more resilient this week,” explained Hand who is in his first year with the team as head coach. “We have this habit when we are up against elite teams that we don’t take advantage of the opportunities we have.”

Hand said the team’s mental toughness is increasing with every game, adding he hopes this loss sparks the sense of urgency needed as they venture into the end of the season.

Last Saturday’s loss left the Monarchs in second place in the league, with the Buccaneers sit-

The St. Albert Stars are sitting with a 4-2 record, the same as the Buccaneers, with the Monarchs now seeing a 6-1 record. The Calgary Gators remain the league’s only undefeated team with an unblemished 7-0 season thus far.

“What we need to do is realize we are going to get one more chance at reacting to adversity this season,” said Hand. “We need to build on our skills as a team to be ready to face these tougher teams.”

Local athletes win big at 55+ Alberta Summer Games

These are the words that some Red Deer athletes live by. With such a motto to model their lives by, it’s no wonder Shirley Reaman, 81, and Kit Nielsen, 59, brought home a combined 10 medals from the 2015 55+ Alberta Summer Games.

The Games, hosted ev-

ery two years in a different town, took place this year in Strathmore. Together the pair ventured south to compete in a number of track and field events for what would be their highest scoring trip to date.

Nielsen, who brought home a gold in 55+ women’s 100m, silver in the 200m, bronze in the discus, silver in long jump and gold in the 4x100m relay, was partaking in her third provincial Summer Games

this year and competed in the 2014 55+ Canada Summer Games last summer in Edmonton also.

She explained she went into this year’s competition with the goal to medal in all of her events.

“It was incredible to experience,” said Nielsen on her 2015 55+ Games experience. “My goal was just to medal in all of my events and I came home with a variety of gold, silver and bronze so that was the icing

on the cake for me.”

Now in her fifth year of competing, she explains she began competing in the Games the year she turned 55. Not only because she was eligible to compete, rather she felt it was something she wanted to do for herself. “It started as wanting to get back in shape and in a way evolved to just being able to prove to myself that I could do it.”

two years, that doesn’t stop Nielsen from training year-round. She credits her training routine to the well-paved trail system near her house on which she walks, runs, bikes and rollerblades on regularly.

In addition she also spends time at the track and field facilities located at Lindsay Thurber High School, where she can often be found practicing her 100m and 200m dashes as well as utilizing the long jump and discus pits.

For Reaman, who together with Nielsen and two other women – one from Lacombe and one from Stettler, the highlight of her 10th year in the Games was watching Nielsen run the fourth leg of the 4x100m relay in which the team won their gold medal.

“I ran first – because I’m the oldest and perhaps the slowest,” explained Reaman with a laugh. “So from across the track I watched as Kit barreled down that last stretch and I remember quite vividly the second she crossed the line and the look of joy on all of my teammates faces.”

The gold medal for the relay was one of five Reaman brought home from Strathmore having taken first in the 80+ discus, 80+ javelin, 80+ shot put, and the 80+ 100m dash.

Having turned 80 last year Reaman is active – walking a mile a day and practicing her throwing events on a regular basis.

She began competing in the Games at the age of 68, when her husband was invited to the 2003 55+ Summer Games in Fort McMurray for golf.

“I talked too much, and it was golf so they told me I had to be quiet,” remembers Reaman on her first visit to the Games. “So to amuse myself I started watching some of the

women’s events. I watched the throwing events and I thought to myself – I can do that.”

And do that she did. At the following Games Reaman would win her first gold medal. “I’ve always had strong arms so at the first Games I only competed in the shot put and javelin,” she said, adding she had never been a strong runner and was unsure of her abilities. “I looked around me and couldn’t believe how many other women I was competing against.

“There was this whole mess of people competing against me that first time, but despite the sheer number of people I somehow won a my first gold medal.”

Prior to her first Games and the starting of her training to compete, Reaman – who has been an athlete nearly all of her life – explained she had gotten caught up in, “The whole being a senior thing,” but has since competed every Games and has won a volume of medals in her respective age categories.

“Women especially – don’t ever think you can’t do it just because of your age. People think once they hit the age of 50 it’s over and you can’t do these things anymore.

“But I’m here to say you can and it’s an incredible way to stay active – just strive to do the best you can every day no matter what age you’re at. In simpler words, be the best you can.”

Sometimes change is a hard thing to accept Metathesiophobia is the psychological term for the fear of change. On some level, we all have a fear (or at least trepidation) regarding change. Whether it’s getting a new haircut, travelling somewhere for the first time or choosing products for our home, everyone has those butterflies when it comes to opening up and making a major change in our lives. This fear is why people wait so long to change their lives or their homes and it is completely normal and completely okay to feel this way.

It always amazes me when clients come into the store and exclaim ‘I need new flooring!’ They go on to list all the things they hate about their current flooring and how they are so desperate to make the change. I’m thinking great, lets get started making your home gorgeous! Then what do they do? Proceed to dart around the samples trying to find a floor that looks

WYSE just like the one they have in their home. I usually stand back and watch at this point because I am confused as to why they want to spend so much time showing me this old, ugly floor that they had.

This is the fear of change creeping in, even though you have made the decision to leave your dusty rose carpet in the dumpster and update to a new product – the reality actually scares the stuffing out of you. The possibility of making a mistake or having judgement cast upon you by neighbours and friends is paralyzing. The thought of not looking competent at home

The mess and disruption that is going to happen in your home is enough to send you back to your 1970’s inspired family room and just forget the whole darn thing.

Can you do it? Can you actually choose a new paint colour or new flooring for your home? Is it as easy as the designer guys on TV make it seem? You can make these decisions but not without a good dose of anxiety while you worry about saving face and having to show your decisions to the world. Including an impartial opinion or designer will definitely help to calm your fears and help the uncertainty.

The unknown can cause a tremendous amount of sweating, especially if you have never redecorated. The thought of ripping, tearing, stripping and demolishing what

currently exists inside your four walls may give you chills. Even the words used for demolition are hard and grating to the nerves. Do I need to pull out baseboards?

How do I get a giant roll of carpet out of my basement and when should I be worried about removing old items that may contain lead or asbestos? Rest assured you aren’t the only person who has these scary questions and help is just a phone call or Google search away.

The extreme cases out there might need an appointment with their favourite psychologist to talk about Metathesiophobia before embarking on a home renovation project. You may need to learn self discipline to keep your eyes on the goal and not to worry about the roadblocks and diversions along the way.

The ins and outs of mortgage porting So remember when you bought your home? It was everything you wanted and so much more. But then something happened and you now need to move.

Maybe one baby turned into three or you got a promotion which requires a move or your dream home just went on the market.

Whatever it is, you are going to be moving so let’s see what we can learn about saving some money.

Porting is the term used by mortgage lenders to move the mortgage from one property to another.

Porting eliminates the penalties which accompany breaking your mortgage.

Here are some common terms in regards to porting.

Port and increase – this is when you take your current mortgage and add the additional funds you need to purchase the new home.

Port and decrease – if you are downsizing then you may actually need less mortgage.

Blend and extend – this applies when you take the mortgage rate you currently have and blend that

PIKKERT rate into the rate currently offered by your lender for the additional funds you will need to come up somewhere in the middle. You will likely not be able to get the crazy low rates being offered today but you will avoid the penalty.

So a few things you should know about porting because each lender has a different set of guidelines.

You have a time limit on how long you can port.

Check with your lender.

Some lenders will have a part A and a part B to the new mortgage which means you will in theory have two maturity dates and two parts to your mortgage payment If your current home sells before you take possession of the new one then you will have to pay the

penalty which will then be reimbursed to you when the new mortgage closes.

Some extra things your well qualified mortgage professional wants you to know.

So the first thing you should do if a move seems to be in your future is to call your current lender and find out exactly how much your penalty is to break your mortgage contract.

The second is to work with said qualified mortgage professional to determine if it makes more sense to incur the penalty. In what situation would that make sense? Let’s look.

Old mortgage is $253,000 at 3.79% with 27 years left and a $4,700 penalty.

Need a new mortgage of $325,000 for the new home.

Offer from the bank is to blend and extend at a rate of 3.59% into a five-year term with 27 years left. Monthly $1,563.23 and the balance after five years is $285,779.

Moving to a new lender could look like this. New mortgage of $330,000 (to allow for the penalty) rate of 2.59% for a five-year-

term with a 25-year mortgage. Monthly payment is $1,493.12 and the balance is $279,809.

Breaking the mortgage will save you two years, $70.11/month or $4,206.60 in payments AND you will owe $5,970 less on the balance. That makes you think twice.

The other reason you

need to talk to your mortgage professional is that if you took a high ratio mortgage, where you put less than 20% down within the last 24 months then you are also able to port your mortgage insurance premium.

Within the first six months you will get a 100% credit, six to 12 months 50% and 12-24 months is 25%.

Your mortgage professional can make sure the lender is aware of your ability to save more money.

So there you have it, how to port your mortgage and keep the most of your money.

TRAVEL ‘Come back new’ with Princess Cruises People always ask ‘What’s it like on a cruise?’ As easy as it is to describe what you do on a cruise, it is nearly impossible to capture what it feels like cruising. You can tell them you saw the sights and did the activities but to explain how awe-inspiring the Shanghai Bund is or how winded you get going through the Third Tunnel of Aggression at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Incheon is, that’s a whole other matter.

The ship is only a part of the total experience, the atmosphere is what makes or break your vacation.

In April of this year I crossed another destination area off of my bucket list.

From April 10th to the 24th I was a guest on the Sapphire Princess for a 14 night cruise through Asia, starting in Beijing and finishing in Hong Kong. The itinerary included stops in Incheon, South Korea; Osaka, Japan; Shanghai, China; Taipei and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. A stop in Okinawa, Japan was supposed to have happened on day 11, but five days of fog earlier in the trip interrupted the schedule a bit and we had to skip the port.

The itinerary for the cruise was the deal-breaker when it came for me to decide where to go. Incheon and the DMZ was the big draw and the chance to visit Taiwan was a close second. Knowing that I was so close to North Korea after seeing all of the recent news about that country was pretty cool. The Royal Tombs of Seosamneung and Seureoung were interesting and very tranquil. The drive to and from the sites was interesting - the highway was a race course in the morning with Porsches jockeying for position and a parking lot in the afternoon.

The fog played havoc with us for five days. We sat in the channel leading into Shanghai for close to nine hours and slowly made our way into port. Hearing all of the fog horns was a new experience, but quickly turned into a new annoyance.

While in Shanghai for our abbreviated stop I took the shuttle to the Bund. This waterfront area along the Huangpu River is a hub of activity day or night. Local vendors selling their wares and street performers vie for your hard earned dollars and the river bank has dozens of historical buildings. While we were there at night, the buildings lit up in a rainbow of colours, aweing the crowd, but at 10 p.m. all was dark - instantly! If you are a shopper, the

Nanjing Lu Street Mall is within walking distance and has everything you might (or might not) want.

I was not sure what to expect with Taiwan. After missing our scheduled stop in Okinawa and a day and a half at sea, we were all ready for to get off the ship. The drive into Taipei from the port in Keelung was beautiful! The countryside was lush and green and there were houses built into the hills that left you scratching your head thinking, how did they do that and where is the road leading into it. We stopped at a Buddhist Temple after the sun went down and were surrounded by the wonderful smell of incense and the sounds of prayer.

Our last port stop was in Kaohsiung, Tai-

wan and instead of going on an organized tour a group of us decided to walk into town and ride the subway. After a mystery meal in which we used a highlighter to circle the pictures of the items on the menu we wanted, we walked along an abandoned railroad track that was turned into a public walkway and park with an assortment of sculptures (the 40 ft. tall Bumblebee from Transformers was impressive).

Every cruise I have been on, the end always shows up way too early and this trip was no exception. Arriving in Hong Kong in the wee hours of the morning was not an event I looked forward to, but as their saying goes, I did ‘come back new’.

Princess Cruises took care of my every need and then some I didn’t think I needed.

Traveling by myself was a first experience for me and they did a great job making feel like I wasn’t alone. I met some amazing people on the trip, from the newly retired travel agent from Australia I hung out with most of the time, to the people I shared my meals with in the Santa Fe Dining Room.

There was the historian from Texas who gave me a lesson about every war the Americans were involved with, the novelist from California who told me to never stop writing and the couple from England that made me laugh all the time and taught me the intricacies of the game of cricket.

It’s not the trip, it’s the journey that matters!
