There has been an increase in development permits issued by the County of Stettler as compared to last year this time.

The increase in residential development permits from 38 to 62 this year, shows an increased value of almost two million dollars.

However, the number of commercial and industrial development permits has reduced

from 13 to six, although the difference in total value is a mere $66,000.

Between January and June this year, the time during which most development permits are obtained, the number of total development permits has gone up significantly, from 51 to 75, creating an increase in the total development permit value of almost two million dollars compared to the same time period last year.

“We are preparing for some

inter-municipal plans between the County and the Town, in the area around Highway 12 east of town, by the new Petro Canada service station,” said Johan van der Bank, director of Planning and Development at the county. “The county and the town have an agreement that in this area the town will provide water and sanitary sewage services to developments in the county, while the county will share up to 30 per cent of the property taxes with

According to van der Bank, sometimes developers want to locate close to town, but not necessarily be in the town.

“Those are the opportunities where the two municipalities are trying to work together for the benefit of the larger community.”

Stacey Lavallie INDEPENDENT REPORTER The installation of solar panels, the creation of a Facebook page, and paper bins in classrooms all have something in common – they resulted in recognition for the people behind the projects.

On Wednesday, July 22, the annual Recycling Awards of Excellence were doled out to a deserving individual, non-profit or institution, and commercial business.

At a catered dinner at Brenda’s Cafe on Main Street, the first name called forth was Candace Magee.

Grace Fix, with the Heartland Beautification Committee, handed out the awards, and explained why each individual was chosen.

Magee was chosen because of her decision to start and maintain a Facebook page in which people in Stettler can re-home items that are still useful, but not needed by the owner.

“Stettler – Items too good to toss out – free” was started by Magee, who continues to maintain it to this day.

“A year-and-a-half ago, Magee founded the group,” Fix said. “This keeps items out of our landfille and in use.”

When Fix first found out about the group 18 months ago, it had just a handful of people making use of it. Today, more than 2,300 people are part of the group – a nice feat when Stettler’s population is around 6,000 (though many members are from county communities). “(Magee) is enabling hundreds of items to stay in use,” Fix said.

Magee also likes to “upcycle” items, Fix noted, taking old items and turning them into something new, like turning old window frames into art.

Burmac Industrial was honoured with the business award for its installation of solar panels on its roof.

The award was accepted by Ryan Bolin.

“When society needs to make changes, it needs leaders who want to make these changes,” Fix said. “Burmac is one of these leaders.”

By installing the solar panels, Fix said that Burmac reduces its need for power, which reduces its carbon footprint by about 15 per cent.

“And they’re hoping to install more,” she noted.

Several years ago, the Grade 4 class and teachers at Stettler Elementary School began a recycling program for paper, installing recycling boxes in each classroom.

Since the program was first started, it’s expanded to include cardboard, pull tabs, batteries, clothing, print toners and print cartridges, juice and milk cartons, and books.

The class is also behind the one-sided paper project, which sees paper with one side used tossed into a box to have the blank side reused for scrap paper, photocopies and other relevant uses, Fix explained.

“The money from refunds go back into the classroom,” Fix said, explaining that each class keeps track of what it makes in recycling refunds.

The money, when it doesn’t go back to the classroom, goes to a good cause, like “families in distress, or the Red Cross after a crisis,” Fix explained.

The money from the pull tabs goes to the Ronald McDonald house, and the school has embarked on a “litterless lunch” program, which has students make use of reusable containers rather than disposable ones.

This year, Fix also in-

troduced a new award, called the “Item Longevity” award. The award goes to a person who ignores society’s “buy new buy new” pressure and keeps an item that is perfectly good in use rather than getting a new replacement.

In its inaugural year, the award went to Noreen Woolsey, who is driving the same car she got in 1991 – 25 years ago.

“Her son was amazed at how well it runs,” Fix said.

“It gets me from A to B,” Woolsey said.

Rob Spencer, who heads up the committee, also presented the annual Beautification Champion award.

This year, it went to Sobeys Liquor store for its new building at the corner of Highway 12 and 50 Street.

“For years, we stared at this eyesore on Main Street,” Penner, who joined Spencer in presenting the award, said.

The site had been a Petro Canada gas station for years, and while the station was closed and moved to another site, the company didn’t release the site for years.

Once the site was released, Sobeys built their new multi-shop building, staying in the theme of the section of Mainstreet, putting out flowers, and generally beautifying the corner.

Driver blows stop sign, crashes into ditch Stacey Lavallie INDEPENDENT REPORTER A 21-year-old Stettler County man is likely regretting his decision to get behind the wheel of his Dodge pick-up truck in the early morning hours of July 25.

Around 3 a.m. that day, it is alleged the driver drove through the stop sign near Points West and, when signalled by police to pull over, decided to keep driving at a “high rate of speed,” according to Stettler RCMP Cpl. Ryan Koehli.

Koehli said the accused, within a short period of time, lost control of the truck and ended up in a ditch, where constables arrested him.

The man refused to give a breath sample and was therefore taken back to the station and charged with a count of refusal

to give breath sample and impaired driving. In addition to those charges, he is also facing a charge each of flight from police and dangerous driving.

Big Valley bruhaha The RCMP were in Big Valley on Thursday, July 23, after receiving multiple tips about Victor Foley, who was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants, relating mostly to property crimes.

According to Koehli, police attended a residence in the Big Valley area where Foley was apprehended.

In addition to the outstanding charges, Foley will also now be facing an obstruction of justice charge for his actions at the residence, though Koehli did not elaborate.

A 34-year-old man also at the residence is also facing an obstruction charge, as is the 51-year-old owner of the home, as she allegedly lied to police when they asked if Foley was present.

“We received several calls about (Foley),” Koehli said.

The RCMP said they appreciate the assistance from the residents of Big Valley who helped them locate and arrest Foley.

Bad barbecue behaviour leads to jail sentence for Izairi Stacey Lavallie INDEPENDENT REPORTER The victims of a September 2014 barbecue bruhaha are relieved the ordeal is over after the accused, Jusaf Izairi, changed his not-guilty plea to guilty after an evidentiary hearing at Alberta Provincial Court on Thursday, July 24.

Izairi was facing a charge each of break and enter, uttering threats and possession of a weapon, as well as five charges of assault with a weapon and two charges of assault stemming from an incident at an Aug. 31-Sept. 1 barbecue at his then-neighbour’s home.

Izairi and his lawyer asked for a recess after some of the Crown’s witnesses had testified during an evidentiary hearing, which would determine if the Crown had enough evidence to go to trial.

When they returned, Izairi changed his plea from not guilty to guilty.

The circumstances of the incident, as revealed during the hearing, are subject to a publication ban.

However, as part of the arrangement with the Crown made during the recess, Izairi pleaded guilty to to three of the assaults with a weapon

(bear spray), one assault, and one utter threats. The remaining charges were withdrawn.

Judge B.D. Rosborough sentenced Izairi to a total of nine months in jail for the crimes, which was satisfied by time served as Izairi has been in custody for 283 days as of the hearing.

However, Izairi remains in jail pending additional criminal matters before the Crown.

Once he is free, Izairi will be subject to an 18-monthlong probation, during which time he is under a complete weapons and alcohol ban. In addition to this, he is banned from possessing a weapon for 10 years, and must provide DNA to the national databank.

The victim surcharges Izairi will be required to pay will come in at roughly $500.

Delayed sentencing Judge Rosborough accepted a guilty plea from Gerald L. Serbier on two charges, one of careless driving and one of mischief, though the sentencing itself was delayed.

A charge of failure to stop at the scene of a collision was withdrawn by the Crown.

In requesting the delayed sentencing, Serbier’s counsel

explained that Serbier is a welder, and his job requires him to travel. He currently has a job lined up, which he will need to finish in order to pay the victim surcharge fines that will come with the guilty plea.

As the penalties for the crimes in question come with an automatic year-long driving ban, Serbier would be unable to complete the job if the sentencing was done that day.

Rosborough agreed, commending Serbier for his straight-forwardness in ex-

plaining why he needs his licence at present, and for the short order of appearances before the Judge to see the matter resolved.

Serbier will reappear in Stettler court on Oct. 13 to be sentenced.

Warrants issued Several individuals did not appear at Court as required to by the charges laid against them, and thus the Judge issued warrants for their arrest.

Four warrants were issued at the end of session.

Change in community remarkable to CiB judges

Stacey Lavallie INDEPENDENT REPORTER The last time Ted Zarudny was in the Stettler, the town’s offices were still at the corner of 50 Street and 49 Avenue.

That was in 2009, and Stettler was just starting to branch into national Communities in Bloom efforts.

The difference between 2009 Stettler and 2015 Stettler, just six years apart, is “remarkable,” Zarudny said.

One of the biggest surprises for the Communities in Bloom judge was how much growth Stettler has seen in the past half-decade in both commercial and industrial areas.

“The change in the downtown (too),” Zarudny said.

“There’s trees, flower displays...how the businesses have bought in to this beautification is wonderful.”

The judge, who hails from Orangeville, Ont., has a long experience with Communities in Bloom, first through his years of effort in his former community of Brampton, Ont. When he and his

wife started their garden centre in Orangeville, Zarudny involved himself on the judging side of the friendly competition.

Though he wasn’t sure what to expect from Stettler, he was expecting quality, given the community’s previous national wins.

“I knew you’d be better, but it was more than I expected to see,” Zarudny admitted. “The amount of things I’ve seen change is wonderful.”

Zarudny wasn’t the only returning judge. Lorna McIlroy was the second Communities in Bloom judge visiting Stettler, and in her case, it was her third visit.

The first time McIlroy came to Stettler was in 2010, the first year the town was in its new office building at the end of Main Street.

“In 2010, there was a lot of pride,” she said. “But it was very quiet.”

Two years later, McIlroy returned and said that pride was a “little more out there.”

Stettler has really come into its own, McIlroy noted.

“You’re proud and loud.

You self-promote. You’ve always had it, but now you flaunt it.”

Judges were in town on July 22 to rate the community using the new Communities in Bloom judging standard, which brings Canada’s system closer in line with the system used in the United Kingdom. Instead a simple number of blooms to be scored, there’s bronze, silver and gold level blooms to win.

This may result in some communities seeming to “go down” in score, but in reality it’s just the new scoring system.

“This year, you don’t have anything to compare it to,” McIlroy explained.

The judges were toured not only through Stettler’s beautified areas, but other parts of the community that showed dedication to recycling and bettering the community.

Stops on Main Street to see the new and mostly complete downtown park, the town office, and the flowers lining the many downtown businesses were augmented by tours of Alberta Prairie Railways’ trains and the P&H Elevator.

Stettler’s three community gardens were shown to the judges while Lee Penner, from the town, explained how the program is popular and growing from one small garden to three, with one new one added this year.

Grace Fix, Stettler’s recycling champion, took the judges on a tour of the recycling centre, touring the small party through how the community’s eco-centre works.

The new skate park was a hit with the judges, as was the new Stettler Recreation Centre and the many recreational facilities.

The day ended at Brenda’s Cafe on Main Street with a catered dinner and awards ceremony.

The need for a kinder, gentler government While there is a lot to talk about after a very interesting week –like (for lack of a better word) the stupidity of ordering government bureaucrats to prepare at least three statements on terrorism every week for foreign minister, or Canada, once a model for human rights observance, being targeted by the United Nations Human Rights Commission for failing to live up to acceptable standards by ignoring First Nations rights, adopting Bill C-51 and refusing to conduct a national inquiry on the issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, the state of the economy looks likely to remain the most important topic in the days and weeks ahead, and maybe even beyond the federal elections in October.

Last week, Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) shattered the rosy outlook sketched by Finance Minister Joe Oliver by announcing the exact opposite of what the minister had said just a day earlier: Oliver said the government was well on its way to a $1.4 billion surplus.

PBO said there would be a minimum of $1 billion deficit in fiscal 2015. After that statement, the only

thing Oliver could do was to dodge reporters’ questions.

Seriously, we Canadians are in a troublesome situation: After a decade of Stephen Harper, we have an economy overwhelmingly reliant on carbon-based resource revenues; the country has lost hundreds, if not thousands, of manufacturing jobs to Mexico and other low-cost labour countries, and that we are in a recession is a secret everybody knows.

Add to that a seasonal disaster that befell on western Canada this summer with massive forest fires and extreme weather conditions that severely damaged crops in many areas in the Prairies; you have a bleak picture to say the least.

Looking ahead, most analysts say the world will not see $100 per barrel oil price until at least 2020; all major economies, foremost among them our southern neighbour, have already admitted that they are condemned to a prolonged period of subdued growth; employment picture is hardly any more optimistic: with ongoing development of robotics, even less workers

will be needed in a steadily declining manufacturing economy.

The combined effect of these circumstances leaves little room for optimism in the short and medium term for maintaining our current living standards, let alone improving them.

Whether we like it or not, we are bound to enter a period when more government intervention in economy and more regulation will be inevitable if we are to avoid increased levels of poverty in the society.

With declining commodity prices and little prospect of incoming investment in manufacturing industries, and agriculture remaining so dependent on climatic phenomena, there appears to be two avenues left only to achieve at least a cyclical growth: One is infrastructure development and the other is service sector expansion, both of which, inevitably, involve government funds.

Infrastructure investment is simple enough: A classic and proven Keynesian model for stimulating economy, government funding of infrastructure projects is bound

to create new employment and fuel demand for an expansion in supply side economics.

When it comes to service sector growth, however, it is likely to require even more broad-based government involvement, not that the government should make the investment in that sector, but because there is another key element: In a declining economy, consumers already find it hard to allocate enough money to meet their basic needs like nutrition, accommodation, clothing etc.; and in such a state of affairs, the ability to afford the products of service sector, the government will need make sure that the national wealth is shared at a more equitable level.

That kind of a goal is not likely to be achieved through steps like the latest trick put into play by the Harper government to buy votes: Every $47 of the $60 child care assistance provided to families will be clawed back by the government within a year in the form of taxes.

What will be needed then is a government that is truly kinder and gentler than the current one.

Canada has a stake in California droughts ...

Will Verboven AHEAD OF THE HEARD It’s a long shot but maybe Canada should revisit the concept of exporting water to parched areas of the USA. With California again in the grips of a severe drought one would expect that they are exploring every idea to long-term relief. Droughts are nothing new to the area, but they have been mitigated over the last 100 years by ever expanding water pipelines and canals extending out hundreds of miles - even into neighbouring states. That approach over the years has more or less, satisfied the needs of cities and the massive agriculture industry. However the sources of much of that water have always been some somewhat precarious that being the mountain snowpack of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Colorado River system and ground water. The snowpack is the most critical; even a small reduction affects the entire state and is made worse by any reduced rainfall. But that also works the other way – a good snowpack results in full reservoirs and the usual human tendency to forget about past droughts. The latter particularly makes expensive long-term unique solutions difficult to pursue – water from Canada being one of them.

One would be short-sighted to presume that Canada has nothing at stake with California droughts, being moving and selling

water to the area may just be a pipe dream – so to speak. However, if you eat fresh vegetables eight months of the year, it’s likely those vegetables came from California and contain scarce California water. In a curious sense Canada actually imports water from California. Such a reality is not lost on Americans who look at the big picture. If the California droughts continue to get worse, and if you believe climate change panickers it will get worse, than American consumers and their governments may be taking a more severe look at agriculture production in California and what needs to be done. Here’s why.

From an urban California citizen’s perspective there is no water shortage – more than enough water is moved around to satisfy the urban consumers’ needs even during the worse droughts. That’s because 80% of water in California is used by agriculture – the argument is that if agricultural use is cut back then there is more available to cities, it’s just a matter of allocation. To some extent that is already happening and being there are more city voters than irrigation farmers that trend will continue as the drought and water shortage continues. It is all aggravated by the usual urban perspective that food magically appears every day at grocery stores. Its unlikely most consumers connect that store food to water use by agriculture. But by accident or design – California vegetables will become

expensive and have repercussions for Canada. It may not happen for many years but if it becomes too expensive – then declining California vegetable production may well see the Americans restricting exports to Canada.

If you think that won’t happen just look to oil – the US long ago put regulations in place that prevents the export of their oil - they want their oil for their citizens. That would be easy to apply to their food production.

It’s long-term but if Canada wants to secure some guaranteed flow of vegetables from California, we need to supply them with one of the most critical components of vegetable production – water. The most likely sources are BC rivers like the Fraser, the Stikine and numerous others that now deposit billions of litres of fresh water into the ocean where it turns into unusable salt water.

There is no doubt that engineering solutions exist that could capture some of that fresh water and divert it to tankers and pipelines where it could be transhipped to California vegetable fields. There is even a side benefit to such water translocation – it will help reduce (albeit small) the perceived rise in ocean levels that threaten to drown Vancouver. How could even the most strident antidevelopment BC residents be opposed to not only saving their coastline, but providing a guaranteed supply of vegetables (even organic free-range) to Canadians. Even breaks and leakage would be no problem with a water pipeline or water carrying tankers. continued on page 10

The adopter accepts parental responsibility for the adoptee and the adoptee simultaneously receives the name, privileges and responsibilities of the new family.

There is not a great deal about adoption in the Old Testament. This is probably because other rules and regulations were in place and delineated in scripture to aid both orphans and the childless.

The New Testament, on the other hand, addresses the matter of adoption specifically.

New Testament adoption can be defined as an act of God’s grace, through which He relationally accepts individuals into His family with full blessings and privilege.

Adoption was implicit in Jesus’ teaching. He referred to God as Father (Matt. 5:16; 6:9; Luke 12:32). In John 1:12 He said that those who receive Him become the “children of God.” The Bible further

states that Jesus’ mission is to bring “many sons to glory” and that He is not ashamed to call those who believe in Him “brothers” (Hebrews 2:10, 11).

However, a more comprehensive description of spiritual adoption is found in apostolic writings. Paul writes that

believers “…did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but… the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba (daddy), Father” (Romans 8:15). In verse 17 he adds, “…if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…” continued on page 20

By this time everyone knows about the microburst that we had in Erskine and some of the surrounding area. Our nicest evergreen tree went over from the roots and made a fine mess in our yard and there are many trees in Erskine that blew over. The cleanup is ongoing. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The County of Stettler kindly arranged for the dump to open on Sunday so that people who were cleaning up branches and the like were able to go to the dump right away.

That was an enormous help -- thanks to our councillor Joe Gendre for arranging this.

The Erskine Recreation Board has decided on Sept. 12 for the annual parade, games and drive in. There will be meetings to determine what will go on this year for the kids amusement and as usual volunteers will be needed to help.

I will have further news about this later on.

The Evangelical Free Church will be having their Vacation Bible School from August 10 - 13th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

All children are welcome to attend.

A new scam going around is an email from Revenue Canada stating they want to deposit money into a person’s bank account and would they please give out their bank information and other information. This is a scam and is currently being investigated by the police and the anti-fraud department as well as Revenue Canada.

I hope everyone is having a good summer so far and lets hope that the weather will “settle” down to normal (whatever that is) soon.

Bullarama coming up at end of August Rose Koenraadt & Dorothy Anderson HALKIRK HERALD A bridal shower was held Saturday afternoon in the Hall to honor Lorisa Schilling, brideelect of Danny McAllister. Seated at the head table with the bride were her sisters and maids of honor, Kourtney and Shayla along with bridesmaids Callie Strandquist and Melissa DeMille, two beautiful flower girls, Brielle and Alerie Sorensen and Lorisas mom, Lorna and Dannys mom Lorraine. Scattered throughout the large crowd of friends and relations were Lorisas two grandmothers, Barbara Schilling and Cherrone Ziemmer as well as Dannys two grandmothers, Joan Cornelssen and Sherrie McNally. Emcee Jamie Rausch entertained the crowd by providing the essentials for a bake off with the bride and bridemaids versus the moms and grandmas.

Naturally both cakes were good and the competition proclaimed a tie.

An assortment of gifts were admired and lunch was enjoyed.

Birthday congratulations go out to our former neighbor, Violet Turre who celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday in the Castor Hall. Violet, who presided over two large birthday cakes while greeting her guests, still lives in her own home.

All of her children, Anne, Neil, Dianne, Dennis, Glenna, Bill, Kathy and Marilyn and their families were present. The large gathering with many friends and relatives also included Violets siblings: Charlie Schaffner from Castor, Tom Schaffner from Stettler, Madeline Bouma from Provost and Amelia Rogers from Vancouver and their families as well as the families of Liz Heslop, Eva Gale and Bill Schaffner. Over 140 family enjoyed a pot-luck supper and reunion following the open house.

It was also a perfect evening to bid farewell to George and Margret Rowland, who will be leaving our community in the near future. They have plans to relocate to Lethbridge.

Brooklyn Perry attended a four day basketball camp, Awesome Hoops, sponsored by Shawna Harle in Calgary last week. Harle is the assistant coach with the Canadian basketball team who won Gold at the Pan-Am games in Toronto.

Irene Schilling spent time with her sister Doreen and nephew Shane Schilling of Calgary.

Kevin and Tina ( Rowland ) McBride from Olds have an exciting trip ahead of them. They are visiting Disneyland this week.

Fiftieth wedding anniversary packs hall Paulette Heer GADSBY/ WESTWOODS Several celebrations marked the weekend this week. Congratulations to Deral and Heather Lang who celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Saturday at the Red Willow Hall. The hall was packed. Daughters Paula and Sheila hosted the event.

There was an entertaining program with stories and reminiscing. Teresa's catering served a mouth watering lunch.

Percy and Paulette Heer were in Castor at the Mission Church to take in Lavern and Nadine Wideman's fiftieth Anniversary, along with friends and family. The Church was full!

Singing, poems and stories made up the program. Birthday cake (along with the anniversary cake) was also served. Happy birthday sung to Ruby Wideman (Lavern's mother) who turned 99!

And Kathy Tuck's mom Vi Turre was a young 90 on July 25, her celebration was also on Saturday in Castor.

The Endiang Hall was packed with friends, family and neighbours on Saturday afternoon for the 80th birthday celebration for Ken Schultz. Ken’s family hosted the social, serving birthday cake and ice cream as well as beverages. There was a picture display with numerous photographs spanning Ken’s 80 years. Congratulations to Ken on reaching this special milestone and best wishes for

many more happy years.

Some folks from our district took in some of the Old Time Music Jamboree in Hanna on the weekend.

Ken and Eleanor Schultz hosted their 33rd annual camp-out on the weekend at their Endiang farm.

They had 18 RVs and two tents set up in their camping area, with one couple coming from as far as Valemount, B.C. They were also joined by many non-campers who came to enjoy the festivities.

Saturday evening included a barbecue supper followed by music and singing around the campfire and a spectacular set of fireworks to end the evening.

Sunday morning, followed by the 12th annual Great Endiang Balloon Race. One hundred tagged balloons were launched, including a special 80th birthday group of balloons set free by Ken. In past years balloons from the balloon race were reported found throughout a large area of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Those areas in Alberta included Hanna, Spondin, Scotfield, Youngstown, Cereal, Halkirk, Castor, Brownfield, Consort, Monitor and Metiskow.

In Saskatchewan the Endiang balloons were found at Eston, Keeler, Rouleau, Kerrobert, Kyle, Osler and Rockglen (which is about nine miles north of the Montana border).

The afternoon saw folks of all ages enjoying the Frisbee golf tournament. First place went to Blaine David, Hanna and Rachel Drummond, Calgary. Second — Rich Meyer, Valemount, B.C. and Judy Crawford, Calgary.

The “honest golfer” award went to Lauren McBain, Lethbridge and Herb Gutsche, Hanna for being good sports.

We extend sympathy to the family of Dale Anton on his sudden passing.

Dale has lived southeast of Endiang for the past few years on the Gary Gibson property (a portion of the former Art Mattheis farm the Gibsons purchased from Wes and Karen Gutsche). Dale looked after the cattle on the Gibson ranch as well as some of the neighboring herds. He was a regular visitor to the restaurant in Endiang. Dale had a likable personality and will be missed by all who knew him.

The funeral for Dale was held in Hanna on Monday.

Endiang’s main street has an addition to it. Dan and Verla Buchwitz have moved a building in, situated north of Ruthie’s Roost café, which they plan to operate as an antique and collectable store.

Keep in mind the Byemoor Hotel is hosting a steak barbeque on July 31from 4-8 p.m. Be sure to come out and enjoy some Alberta beef at its finest.

Expiry dates are put in place on medications because the manufacturer can no longer guarantee the stability and potency of a medication beyond the date provided. It is always a good idea to clean out your medication cabinet yearly, especially of prescription vials that don’t always have the expiry date provided. Medication used beyond the expiry date often won’t work as well, and can even be harmful.

To avoid taking out of date medication, throw away any medication that has changed color or smell, creams or gels that have separated into layers, or eye/ear drops that have been open more than a month, since the preservative in those preparations have a short lifespan. A: As part of the “Family Tax Cuts” announced by the Federal government in October 2014 the UCCB is increasing from $100 to $160 for children under the age of 6 and from $0 to $60/ child between the ages of 6 – 17. This change was effective January 1, 2015, however the payment of the extra benefit did not come into effect until July 2015, at that point a payment was made for the regular July payment plus the extra payment that was not made in the months of January – June 2015. We always hear that our horses should have their hooves trimmed every 6 - 8 weeks. Is this true?

As the old adage goes, “no hoof, no horse”. This could not be more true. The rate of growth varies with age, but a horse takes about 12 months to grow a new hoof from the coronary band to its full length.

An appropriate trimming schedule depends on the horse and can be as often as every 2 weeks or as infrequent as every 3 months. Most horses fall into the every 6-8 weeks time frame. A horse’s nutrition, general health and housing as well as season all impact how the hoof grows.

An appropriate hoof management is essential to preventing conformational changes during the hoof growth as well as preventing lameness or diseases in the hoof such as abscesses, quarter cracks or thrush. Routine trimming helps to keep a horse’s foot in balance and helps to reduce the strain on the bones, tendons and ligaments of the leg, reducing the chances of injury.

in at 17.691 seconds at the third barrel race of the series My Favorite Things on Monday, July

27, raking up the highest prize money in the first division.

She was followed by

Dawn Gertner in the same division. In the second division, Sarah Hall took first, followed

by Chris Ross. In the third division, Jill MacDougall claimed top time, followed by Jessa Galloway. In the final and fourth division, Darn Gertner took first, followed by Amanda Crowe.

Considered to be one of the more popular systems on the circuit, this category of barrel racing is called the D system or “Divisions.”

With many different levels of riders and horses, it is often impossible to create a level playground.

However, the divisions system keeps the experience of horses and participants in mind, even though inexperienced horses and riders end up competing with experienced ones in the race.

Based on the fastest time of the race, fifthof-a-second is added to the following division, which automatically becomes the fastest time of that division.

Eventually, the final division, which in this case is the fourth division has one second added to the fastest time of the race, determining the winner of the fourth

division or 4D. This system allows horses and riders of all levels to compete at the same race and also gives them an opportunity to win prize money and other prizes.

With the evolution of this system, barrel race industry has seen a significant growth.

“We wanted to host a series with good ground and great prizes,” said Melissa GruenwaldThiessen, one of the organizers for the series.

“The only real rule is that people come and have fun, and I think we are accomplishing that here.”

My Favorite Things barrel series is a set of 10 races, starting in the month of July and running until October at the Stettler Agriplex outdoor arena. Points are awarded in each division, from 10 points to the fastest rider, to one point awarded to the 10th rider. The five fastest riders for each race at the series win prize money.

At the end of the 10th race in October, scheduled for October 5, the top-10 point earners will win prizes.

The confidence with which Stettler went into the Tier 4 provincials in Leduc was dampened when they lost to Calgary Cubs 21-3 on Friday, July 24. Although the team played a resolute game all throughout, they were outwitted in the end.

Stettler did not allow this to affect them as they played a great game against Heisler on Saturday, July 25, winning 15-5 in five innings with a complete game pitched by No. 42 Kirk Kromm at 88 pitches.

In the semi-finals against Drayton Valley, Stettler lost again 13-3 in six innings, while Drayton went on to play Calgary in the final.

Drayton won the Tier 4 Provincial Championship.

Stettler youth closer to pro scooter dreams

Moush Sara John INDEPENDENT REPORTER The Stettler Alliance Church held a sports camp on Wednesday, July 8, which ran from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for kids aged between four and eight, and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for kids slightly older, aged nine to 13.

All through summer, Stettler Alliance Church has organized day camps and games to keep kids healthy and active.

“We are trying to give kids free opportunities to play, mingle and make friends with others who they can connect with or they like,” said Pastor Tyler Ans, day camp coordinator. “It is important for kids to be active, and so we are trying to get them out of the

house, rather than being in front of televisions, on the couch.”

All the programs have been devised in a way which gets kids outdoors.

But, sometimes when it gets too hot, Ans takes the kids in the air-conditioned gymnasium of Alliance Church and makes them play hockey or soccer.

Camps held so far have been very successful and include Super Hero Games, Sports Camp and Olympic Sports Games. Others like Princess and Pirates, Science and Crafts and Water Games will be held in August.

The summer program will be capped off on August 31 with family movies and barbecue.

The team recognition through a shirt isn’t the only way being part of the team helps Fraser. The team promotes him, sending out information about Fraser to others who may be interested. And he practices with them, having their guidance to help him master tricks he hasn’t yet added to his repertoire.

“I’m getting pretty close,” he said.

The trick is done on the quarter pipe. The rider goes up the pipe, “catches some air,” and then tries to spin the deck of the scooter (the part where the feet go) for a full rotation, before the rider lands.

Stacey Lavallie INDEPENDENT REPORTER Doing backflips above an unforgiving cement surface doesn’t even make Stettler’s Jared Fraser blink. In fact, it’s part of every day life for the extreme sports fan, who recently made it on to a scooter team based out of Sylvan Lake.

The 12-year-old has been “scootering” for about four years now, starting out at the old Stettler skate park, a makeshift make-do of metal ramps and platforms assembled in the outdoor rink during the summer months.

The new skate park, which is “awesome” according to Fraser, has only made his skills grow by leaps and bounds.

“For as long as I can remember, this is what he’s wanted,” mother Heidi Fraser said. “He wants to be a pro rider.”

To help her son achieve his dream, she packed him up on weekends to take him to skate parks around central Alberta, giving him the chance to practice on skate parks that were better than the one present in Stettler, at least at the time.

“The new park is great,” she said.

With the help of his sister, Katherine, Fraser made a video of him performing the tricks he can do, from backflips to jumps and spins. Once the video was done, and using a friend in the community, the family was able to get in touch with Ethan Howell, who leads the Shop Nomads, a scootering team based out of Sylvan Lake.

That video landed the 12-year-old an interview with Howell, and a place on the team as its youngest member.

“When I go to events, I have a team behind me,” he said. The team recognition helps him be recognized, and helps his name become known. Recognition is a large part of the new sport, which mostly exists through events hosted by stores and communities.

A moment later, kids come up to him to ask for advice, and the youth freely gives it, guiding other skaters and scooters through the tricks they are trying to master.

Fraser’s become somewhat of a Stettler teacher in his own way, his mother said.

“He’s always here, volunteering at events, helping out,” she said. “And he’s always ready to help others master what they’re doing.”

Fraser can be found at the skate park almost every day, a stone’s throw from his home, helping out other skaters while practicing his own moves.

Someday, he said he hopes people will find him on the pro circuit.

JIM JENKIN Jan. 3, 1949 - July 14, 2015 Rochon Sands, AB Jim was survived by wife Sandy; stepchildren Darcy (Richard), Mark (Holly) and Brett (Leila); and grandchildren (his pride and joy) Oliver, Jacob, Joe and Luiza; brother Gary; sisters Penny (Jim) and Sherry (Bert); numerous nieces and nephews; and friends too numerous to list. He was predeceased by his father Bill, mother Verl, sister Bunny and her husband Bob. Jim was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Edmonton, graduating from McNally High School and later from the RCMP Academy in Regina. Jim met Sandy and moved to Camrose in 1981. Jim was later employed by an Edmonton law firm as office manager and worked there for 19 years. He then “retired” out to the Lake where he became the Public Works Supervisor.

Jim was immensely proud of his family and took great pleasure in the many personal, educational and professional accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Jim had an insatiable curiosity about the world around him and a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed!

A celebration of his life was held at Rochon Sands Hall on Monday, July 27, 2015 from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

GEDDES Harold McGill Feb. 2, 1929 - July 19, 2015 Harold passed peacefully in his sleep the morning of July 19, 2015. He was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta where he worked for IBM, Hudsons Bay Oil and Gas Company and was a member of the 1948 Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders football organization. He moved to Stettler, Alberta in 1974 where he was actively involved in curling, bowling and golf and worked for Astro Tire, McTaggart Chev Olds and Stettler Fertilizer.

Predeceased by his wife Jean (Sellers); older siblings, Barbara and Kenion Geddes and Nora Donaldson; Harold is survived by his children, Joanne (Greg) Libke, Bette Geddes (Patrick Stewart), Harold K Geddes, Byron (Sonya) Geddes, and Cameron (Kathie) Geddes. Harold enjoyed the company of his eight grandchildren, Miles (Raymie) Libke, James, Bryce, and Lauren Libke, Alexandra and Rogan Geddes, Mckenna and Niklas Geddes; and two great grandsons, Finn and Sullivan Libke, He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Harold was an avid sports fan and a long time member of the Stettler Golf Club. Instead of a formal service, it is requested that his family and friends enjoy a round of golf in his memory. The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage House in Stettler for their excellent care of our Dad. ZENDER Audrey Irene Zender of Stettler, Alberta passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on July 15, 2015 at Points West Living, her home since September 2014. Audrey was born September 18, 1918 at Peace River, Alberta.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 PM on August 17, 2015 at Stettler United Church.

The family will greet friends and family immediately following the service at a luncheon in the C.E. Wing of the church. A private family burial, next to her husband Bob, at Lake View Cemetery will precede the service.

Audrey was predeceased by her parents Alexander and Lea McLure in 1959 and 1961, her brother Laverne in 1966, her loving husband Bob in 1989, her brother in law Phillip in 1990, her sister in law Joan in 2004, sister in law Catherine in 2003 and her brother Gordon Eldon in 2013.

She is survived by her daughter Joanne (Jamie) Austin of Kelowna, her son Ken (Judy) Zender of Spruce Grove; her 6 grandchildren: Jason (Jenn) Jarvis of Port Coquitlam, Blair (Cindy) Jarvis of Calgary, Colin (Sandie) Jarvis of Calgary, Shayne (Stevie) Zender of Spruce Grove, Chad (Tiffany) Zender of Edmonton, Codie (Matt) Richard of Edmonton; her 13 great grandchildren: Alex, Hailey, Hudson, Jesse, Katelyn, Keaton, Kenna, Kiera, Oliver, Owen, Rebecca, Victoria and Violet; and many family and good friends.

John, the beloved disciple adds, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!”(1 John 3:1).

And Peter further clarifies that believers have received not only blessings, inheritance, nurture and names, but they have taken on the very nature of God! He writes that believers have “been given…exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature…” (2 Peter 1:4).

There were two grade 1 boys claiming to be brothers, but their teacher noticed that their birthdays were 4 months apart.

When she asked them how this could be, they said they would ask their dad that night. They did and he replied that the reason was that one of them was adopted and it didn’t matter which one.

However, they wanted to know which of them was adopted so they pressed the father on the matter. He told them, “I’m afraid I cannot help you.

You see”, he explained, “I have loved and accepted you both so equally, that I cannot remember which one of you is adopted.” I believe this story captures the personal and powerful nature of spiritual adoption.

As adopted children, “God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba (Daddy), Father!” (Galatians 4:6).
