Fourth annual Flathead BioBlitz aims to catalogue local species

Fourteen scientists gathered on July 24 in B.C.’s Flathead and Elk valleys for a BioBlitz on three undeveloped parcels of land belonging to Teck Resources Ltd. Teck purchased the land for conservation in October 2013, for $19 million. One parcel is the former Flathead Townsite, a 1,000-hectare section along the Flathead River that is important for bull trout, westslope cutthroat trout, grizzly bears and birds. The company also bought two 3,000-hectare parcels at Alexander Creek and Grave Prairie in the adjoining Elk Valley.

“Teck purchased these lands for con-

servation because they are home to an incredible diversity of wildlife and are culturally significant to the Ktunaxa Nation,” said Marcia Smith, Teck’s Senior Vice President of Sustainability and External Affairs. “We are excited to see the results of this year’s BioBlitz, which will build on our shared knowledge of this special part of the world, and help guide our work to ensure it is protected for future generations.”

Scientists, including two from the Royal BC Museum, collected specimens of everything from bugs to plants, and will document all the wildlife they spotted, includ-

ing bird species and small mammals like the endangered badger.

“We already know that the Flathead and Alexander Creek parcels are critically important for wildlife connectivity,” said Wildsight Conservation Director John Bergenske. “They are part of an essential corridor for grizzlies, lynx and other wildlife that move up and down the Rocky Mountains, from Montana’s Glacier National Park to Banff and Jasper National Parks.”

Three BioBlitzes have already been held in the Flathead, starting in 2012. Scientists found no introduced bug, mollusc (clam, snail and slug) or bird

species in the Flathead, confirming that the area is rich in biodiversity. Among other finds, they discovered a brand new species of spider so speedy that they named it Apostenus ducati after the Italian motorcycle. They also found a fingernail clam that had not been sighted in B.C. in 100 years, several rare butterfly species, and all four species of chickadee.

“The Flathead is a mixing zone for species from four different eco-regions,” said Peter Wood, Director of Terrestrial Campaigns for the BC Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.

Ombudsperson given powers to investigate researcher firings

work on drug effectiveness was terminated three years ago.

The B.C. government passed amendments Tuesday to allow Ombudsperson Jay Chalke to review the case that has had

the government on the defensive since the abrupt dismissal of university researchers in 2012.

The researchers were assessing drugs for eligibility under the province’s

Pharmacare program.

The health ministry initially said a confidential database of B.C. patients who had taken various drugs had been misused, and some of the researchers appeared

One fired contractor committed suicide, another is suing the government for wrongful dismissal and the remainder have been paid confidential settlements and reinstated. The government has since apologized for the way the contractors were treated, but reasons for the firings and why they were reversed have not been made clear.

Chalke, a former public trustee appointed Ombudsperson this spring, said he would take the case if confidentiality agreements didn’t prevent him from reviewing documents and getting answers from those involved.

After an independent labour lawyer’s review was unable to compel testimony from senior health ministry officials, Premier Christy Clark rejected opposition calls for an independent inquiry.

Health Minister Terry Lake referred the issue to the Ombudsperson, and NDP critics agreed to the move after changes were made to give Chalke the authority he needs.

CKF is a local community foundation, established in 2005, with the purpose of professional management of endowment funds and the distribution of the net earnings to worthy local projects. The earnings of some funds are designated for specific purposes, but undesignated funds produce investment income that can be given out in grants each year. The total

of funds invested is now over $1.2 million, all from local donors.

Categories considered are social services, education, environment, healthcare, youth, seniors, and the arts, among others.

Projects receiving grants this year included Canyon C o m m u n i t y Association for a new pavilion, Cresteramics for new doors, Creston Valley Community Housing Society to help reduce rents, Kootenai Community Centre Society for repairs to youth housing, Kootenay Regional Association for Community

Anderson is a 6’0” middle from Jaffray, B.C., who brings three years of experience playing club volleyball with the East Kootenay Volleyball Club (EKVC), a team that competes throughout Alberta and British Columbia.

Last year, she was a member of the team that won Division 2 Alberta Provincials.

Anderson played three years of high school volleyball with Mount Baker Secondary in Cranbrook, B.C., where she was named team MVP for the past two years as well as MVP for beach volleyball in 2015. She was also a member of the Reds Volleyball U18 Club in Fredericton,

How can a hunter define a legal spike elk or a bull moose with shirt-button sized projections even with a pair of binoculars at 70 to 80 yards? If the hunter needs meat and takes a chance and shoots and the animal turns out to be illegal, the hunter leaves the animal to rot and leaves the area immediately. You have no idea how often this happens at hunting season. How could you? My guess is two elk in every game management region left for the predators to eat. Come and join the “Jump In” Rod Run on the August long weekend

by Lorne Eckersley, Creston Valley Advance Owners of pre-1976 vehicles are invited to join in the “Jump In” Rod Run on the August long weekend.

Organizer Ron Choquette has mapped out a twoday route (Aug. 1-2) that is free to participate in and can be joined at any point along the way. It’s all about the camaraderie that classic vehicle owners enjoy, he said last week.

“The route laid out is circuitous,” he said, “so you may join us as we pass through your hometown (or close to it), and you may leave whenever and wherever it suits you.”

The rod run starts out at 9 a.m. Aug. 1 in Creston and heads east through Yahk and Cranbrook before turning northward and through Kimberley, Canal Flats, Fairmont Hot Springs, Invermere, Radium and Golden, where an overnight stay is planned. It starts again the following morning at 8 a.m. and heads west, south and then east through Revelstoke, Shelter Bay (where cars will board a free ferry), Galena Bay, Nakusp, New Denver, Silverton, Slocan, Winlaw, Nelson and Salmo before winding up in Creston by 5 p.m.

On Aug. 3, there will be a show and

shine sponsored at the Ramada Creston parking lot for those who want to make an entire long weekend of it.

“There is no cost other than what you need to spend on fuel, meals and accommodation,” he said.

“You are responsible for making your own lodging arrangements.”

Choquette will be making the trip in his 1931 Ford Model A, the Black Rose, which he lovingly rebuilt in memory of his late wife.

“Rod runs and classic car shows really haven’t got much to do with the hardware and trophies,” he said.

“They are all about the people you meet.

I really like engaging with owners, talking about cars and sharing stories.”

They are also a way to kindle the memories he shared with his wife, Louise, who “went to every show I ever went to — she was a part of the hobby.”

The August Rod Run is intended to be a family affair, Choquette said.

“Bring your kids, bring your grandkids.

Show them this beautiful part of B.C. and help them appreciate why we love classic cars — we need to get young people involved in the hobby.”
