For the first time in five years, Mission and Abbotsford are seeing a hike in annual crime figures released by Statistics Canada.

But police spokesmen in both communities point out that the numbers are still down from where they were in 2010.

The stats, released Wednesday, report the crime severity index and the crime rate for 33 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) across Canada for 2014.

The Abbotsford-Mission CMA recorded the sixth-highest crime rate in the nation and the seventh-highest figure on the crime severity index – although both figures were below the provincial average.

Abbotsford had 6,496 Criminal Code offences per 100,000 population, compared to the national average of 5,046 and the provincial average of 7,599. The rate rose seven per cent increase over 2013.

The area’s crime severity index (CSI), which is based on the number of crimes reported and the severity of each offence, was 84.4, up six per cent from 2013. That is higher than the national average of 66.7, but less and the provincial average of 91.6.

The numbers, broken down further, separate the two communities from one another and show that each recorded

increases in their CSI (a 3.5 per cent hike in Abbotsford, 10.5 per cent in Mission), violent CSI (9.4 per cent and 38.3 respectively) and non-violent CSI (1.6 and 3.5).

MacDonald attributed the 2014 increases to two main issues that are causing challenges for police: the ongoing Townline Hill conflict and street and small-business robberies.

Police first reported a year ago that a conflict between two groups of young men in the Townline and Blueridge areas was resulting in incidents that ranged

from vandalism and mischief – such as keying cars and smashing windows – to arson.

Those incidents have since progressed to include several shootings and assaults.

The problems have continued into 2015, and on Sunday a house was hit by gunfire, although no injuries were reported.

Sgt. Shaun Wright of the Mission RCMP said that agency will also continue to analyze crime trends and implement crime-reduction strategies in hopes of dropping the numbers.

He said Mission council recently approved funding for three additional officers this year who will be part of a newly formed prolific offender suppression team that will conduct targeted enforcement on prolific offenders.

“Experience has shown that a few people in the community are responsible for the majority of criminal offences,” Wright said.

He said a “significant number” of crimes are related to mental-health issues, and the Mission RCMP has an officer who works full-time in partnership with Fraser Health and the APD as part of a newly formed “assertive community treatment” team.

Abbotsford’s CSI for 2014 is 74.6, compared to 94 in 2010, and Mission’s is 120 compared to 125.5 in 2010.

Grewal withdraws his candidacy

The Conservative candidate for the newly formed Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding will no longer run, announcing that he has withdrawn his candidacy following an unspecified decision by the party.

Liv Grewal had won a May vote to be the Conservative candidate in the new riding, which includes territory in the north reaches of Abbotsford, Mission, and throughout the Fraser Canyon.

But on Wednesday, he sent out a press release announcing that he was withdrawing after a Conservative Party decision.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been passion-

ate about public service,” Grewal wrote. “Over the last 18 years, I have been actively participating in the Reform Party of Canada, Canadian Alliance, and then to the Conservative Party of Canada.”

He added: “I’m disappointed with this decision GREWAL by the Party.

Sadly, it is the result of an unfair political process.”

Grewal, an Abbotsford resident, is the son of MP Nina Grewal and former MP Gurmant Grewal. Gurmant Grewal attempted to run for the

Conservatives in the Cloverdale-Langley City riding, but was forced to withdraw last November.

In May, Abbotsford News columnist Mark Rushton wrote about the reaction from some party members following the selection of Liv Grewal as the Conservative candidate.

“I’ve received many emails and calls over the past couple of days alleging all sorts of things: interloper-candidate, mass membership purchases, voting by non-residents – none substantiated.”

Grewal had amassed 54 per cent of the total vote.

The Conservative Party did not return requests for comment by press deadline.

Discovering new artists from around the world and enjoying quality music keep audiences returning each year to the Mission Folk Music Festival, says artistic director Francis Xavier Edwards.

Edwards credits loyal crowds and a dedicated volunteer base to the success of the festival, now celebrating its 28th year. “(The festival) is not driven by money.

It’s driven by an artistic vision and a vision of community,” he said.

This year’s event starts today (Friday) and runs through Sunday at Fraser River Heritage Park.

Edwards said the festival is supported by between 300 and 350 volunteers – about 80 per cent of whom will return next year – and attracts approximately 7,000 attendees over the three days.

Most festival-goers come from across B.C., but the event also attracts many from Washington State, Oregon and California.

Edwards said a lot of people enjoy the “discovery” of the festival and listening to diverse artists that they otherwise would not be able to see live.

For example, Edwards said he is particularly looking forward to Saturday night’s performances, which include Haya from Inner Mongolia, Ialma from Belgium/Galicia, Volosi from Poland and Black Umfolosi of Zimbabwe.

The Mission Folk Music Festival also features the Music BC Stage with a showcase of emerging B.C. artists Mindil Beach, Jocelyn Pettit, Lydia Hol and The Lion, The Bear, The Fox. Edwards said another highlight is Sunday night’s finale performance featuring Canadian folk legend Sylvia Tyson.

The festival site features four stages of music as well as workshops, a Folk Art and Import Market, food concessions, a

Is B.C. LNG industry real? Yes

B.C. Views The B.C. legislature was back in session last week, a rare summer sitting to approve a 25-year project agreement for the first large-scale liquefied natural gas project in northern B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong released the lengthy legal agreement prior to the debate, saying this step should remove any doubt that an international investment group led

by Petronas of Malaysia intends to go ahead.

With billions invested in upstream resources and buyers waiting at home, the Pacific Northwest LNG group includes Chinese state corporation Sinopec, Indian Oil Corp., Japan Petroleum Exploration Corp. and Petroleum Brunei.

The most contentious issue is the government’s intention to protect the investors from “discriminatory” tax and regulations for the life of the project. The government insists these sorts of long-term cost certainty agreements are commonplace, and don’t affect provincial and federal taxes or environmental regulations unless they single out LNG operations.

Future governments can raise corporate tax rates, carbon tax or enter into a cap and trade system. Ottawa can scrap capital cost

allowances that were recently extended to LNG producers, which is significant because Liberal leader Justin Trudeau has indicated he would get rid of what he calls subsidies to fossil fuels. Both the province and Ottawa allow capital cost write-offs against corporate tax, to attract investment. B.C. attracted a lot of gas drilling rigs from Alberta with tax breaks for deep drilling.

The B.C. government invited comparisons with Western Australia LNG producers, and NDP researchers did just that. They noted that Australia’s Gorgon and North West Shelf LNG projects have written provisions that local employment and local suppliers will get preference.

Those are absent in B.C., along with apprenticeship guarantees for LNG.

“There was hard bargaining by the companies, and certainly the premier went into this negotiation in a very weak position, having to deliver on her extravagant and grandiose promises from the election,” NDP critic Bruce Ralston said. “The companies did well.

Whether the citizens of British Columbia did well is certainly an open question.”

Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver painted himself into a corner, having spent the last two years dismissing the B.C. LNG industry as a fantasy that will never come to pass, strictly on economic grounds. He has since branded the Petronas deal, a template for any future projects, a “generational sellout.”

When he showed Richard the suite, he assured him that the carpets would be cleaned – or replaced entirely – before the move.

On the woman’s moving day, she loaded up a pickup truck with her items and said she would be back for the rest. She never returned.

The tenant left behind several items, including bags of garbage, a TV cabinet and a bicycle, and she had not done any cleaning.

Brendan discovered the worst of it when he opened the walk-in storage closet by the front door. Behind a crib was a pile of dirty diapers about a foot and a half deep.

Richard was due to move in the next day, but Brendan called him and said he would put him up in a hotel for another night so that the suite could be thoroughly cleaned.

Brendan hauled all the garbage to the dump, had the carpets professionally cleaned twice, and repainted the entire unit – at a cost higher than

the woman’s $350 damage deposit had been.

Richard has now lived in the apartment for about four years, and Brendan said he is the best tenant anyone could hope for. Richard has even been over to Brendan’s home for a barbecue.

Brendan, who lives with his fiancée and two kids, said his experience with his former tenant has taught him a valuable lesson about being a landlord – that being out of pocket for a few weeks is better than facing the worst-case scenario.

“Always vet the people moving in.

If they have a story that sounds even a little bit off, it’s probably worth following up on, or take a pass,” he said.

He feels lucky that the woman didn’t destroy the suite further once she was given an eviction notice.

However, although he believes that in some situations tenants have too many rights, he says “at the same time, the tenants need to be protected from bad landlords.”

Fifty homes near Eagle Road and Highway 7, east of Mission, will benefit from a new $1.4 million project that will provide clean, reliable municipal drinking water service and fire protection.

The system will draw treated potable water from the existing Abbotsford-Mission supply main, which will require installing a pressure-reducing valve station, approximately 10 km of water main and 50 service connections. Once completed, the system will meet all the requirements of the new Drinking Water Protection Act. “Our government is pleased to support this important drinking water and fire protection project. Once complete, 50 homes will be connected to the Fraser Valley Regional District’s drinking water system and fire protection needs will also be met,� said Simon Gibson, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission.

The project, announced last Friday, was made possible thanks to joint funding from the governments of Canada and British Columbia through the Small Communities Fund.

A new report suggests that while Abbotsford-Mission ranks highly on a list of the best cities to be a woman in Canada, the area also has the biggest wage gap, with women who are working earning less than 60 per cent of what men do.

The study was released last Wednesday by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), an independent policy research organization.

The report ranks 25 cities based on how men and women fare in economic security, leadership, health, personal security and education; however, it focuses on the disparity between men and women, rather than the overall well-being of either.

The Abbotsford-Mission census metropolitan area (CMA) ranks fourth overall out of 25 cities, following Victoria, Gatineau and Quebec City.

Vancouver is ranked seventh on the list.

While Abbotsford ranked 22nd in economic security, and 16th in health, it ranked second in leadership and security.

The report notes that when it comes to leadership, both Abbotsford and Mission women are well-represented on their city councils. In Abbotsford, there are four women on the nine-person council, and in Mission, three of seven seats are filled by women. Outside of politics, the report notes that women make up 36 per cent of senior managers.

In education, women in Abbotsford and Mission are more likely than men to finish high school college or university, although the number of each gender who hold degrees is below the national average. About 18 per cent of women have a college degree compared to 12 per cent of men, but men are twice as likely to have completed training in the trades – 15 per cent to women’s eight.

Abbotsford also has the largest wage gap between the genders in Canada, with woman earning just 57 per cent of what men do.

Women see the smallest wage gap in Gatineau, where they earn 87 cents to the man’s dollar.

Iglika Ivanova, a senior economist with the B.C. office of CCPA, said reasons for the wage gap can be hard to determine, but are sometimes dependent on the types of industry in the city, as different industries can attract higher levels of either gender and some industries tend have greater wage gaps.

Fiona McQuarrie, an associate professor at the University of the Fraser Valley who teaches a course on gender and diversity issues for the school of business, also says the gap may stem from the types of jobs in Abbotsford.

McQuarrie said that according to Statistics Canada data, just over 25 per cent of the workforce in Abbotsford-Mission is in sales and service, an industry that spans from high commission sales to people working in shops, she said.

There are wage differences for men and women in that sector, with men generally occupying the higher-earning positions.

Mission residents Dawson Chalifoux and Shonly Wallace were both named to the Team BC lacrosse squad representing the province in the 2015 Female Midget National Championships in Calgary, Alta.

The tournament kicked off on Tuesday July, 21 and will run until Saturday, July 25.

Chalifoux, 16, said the current 20-girl team was selected over the course of a three-day camp held at the end of May. “It was a lot of hours, from 8 a.m. to dinner time. It was game after game,” said Chalifoux, who was named assistant captain of the squad.

Chalifoux was a part of Team BC squads the past two years, with the midget girls team that brought home gold in last year’s national championships in Whitby, Ont. as well as the bantam girls that took silver in the 2012-13 nationals.

The girls said, since naming the roster, they have practiced almost daily, met with a food nutritionist and completed team building exercises.

“We broke boards, karate-style,” said Chalifoux.

Wallace, 14, said she began playing lacrosse just a few years ago. This is her first time playing on a Team BC squad.

“I really hope we win gold. We have the potential,” said Wallace, adding, “I’m glad to support Mission.”

As for competition, Chalifoux said Team Ontario would likely be their top opponent. The bantam and midget teams Chalifoux played on for Team BC faced Ontario in both gold medal matches the past two years.

The Peewee AA boys baseball provincials is being held at Mission Sports Park this weekend.

It will feature 10 teams across two pools and will include the Mission Twins baseball club, who have already won two tournaments this year.

Games started Thursday, July 23, and will run through Saturday, with the semifinals and championship matches scheduled for Sunday, July 26.

There will also be a skills competition on Saturday, which will include an accuracy throw, around the horn, base

race, bocci and coolest coach contest.

Pool A will consist of squads from Mission, Kelowna, Ladner, Campbell River and Oceanside, while Pool B will have teams from Chilliwack, Duncan, Coquitlam/Port Moody, Prince George and Ridge Meadows.

A day on the track On August 3, the Westwood Motorcycle Racing Club is inviting kids from B.C. Children’s Hospital, Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada and Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada for a day at the track at Mission Raceway Park.

For the past five years, former racer Bernie Ryan has been showing these kids a great time at Mission.

During the lunch break, Ryan will take the kids and spectators out

onto the track and explain to them what the racers are thinking in certain corners, where racers apply the brakes, and where they hit the throttle. A BLOOMING TRIP Last week, a leisurely trip down Sylvester and Seux Roads with Society board member Myrna Matthews gave us time to talk about why we do what we do. Moreover, many of the properties we viewed along the way were a delight to behold. We hope that the national judges will also have the opportunity to include this area in their visit.

The “community” in in Communities in Bloom was the focus of our chat. As our provincial motto states: People, Plants and Pride growing together. All three are equally important for us, and the end result is Community Building.

Myrna is the gardener of this duo (I just write about gardeners’ work), who views gardens with a more professional eye than this writer and had brought along her camera. Particularly interesting were the Anderson and Bernal properties. We

had a chance to chat with Chuck Bernal, who pointed out (despite standing in a very impressive front yard) that it was a work in progress.

This trip is probably the most leisurely time we will have for now, as additional busy days lie ahead: national judges’ visit (July 28 to 29), Streetscapes thank you reception (July 28) and BC Day (August 3).

As part of their visit, national judges will attend the Streetscapes thank you reception where photos of recognized properties will be shown. The next day, the judges will be given a grand tour and shown the community, highlighting public sites and community projects.

Celebrating two decades

On the Spot

I am very happy to announce that I’m officially celebrating my 20th year as a columnist, and what a ride it’s been. What was supposed to be a fewmonths gig turned out to be a 240-month dialogue on a wide range of topics. My first column ran on June 23, 1995. I’ve taken this writing responsibility very seriously, and worked tirelessly with community members to bring solution to issues to better improve our diverse relationships and believe me there is never a shortage of issues. But, one thing we should be extremely grateful for is that we can have a discussion of such topics.

Being a columnist is not as easy as you might think. You may have one person patting you on the back and at the same time, you might have a person pointing a finger in your face in disagreement. Diversity is a very fragile concept and the moods of the community can change at any time, creating barriers. I have taken the time to listen and have always enjoyed the feedback from readers.

When I regularly speak to people about diversity and what it means to them, the first thing I often hear is that it’s about celebrating our differences. I believe differences are important to recognize and celebrate, but so are our similarities. Actually, we all have more similarities than differences in common when it comes to our families and friends.

When defining diversity and explaining what it means, it can be a little confusing for some. Diversity is about being gentle with each other, and finding a reference we can all relate too. When we are gentle, we often have an open mind, creating positive relationships. Too often, I see people being a little less patient with one another.

However, much work still remains in how we interact with each other as one diverse community between are many different generations.

I recall when a young girl wrote in as part of her essay response a few years ago. She echoed similar concerns that our communities are very fragmented. At the same time I cannot count how many positive actions that are being done daily to make our communities more accepting of each other and inclusive. I hear it in the stories when our Cycling4Diversity team visits schools and I am proud to say your C4D team has visited almost all of the public schools in Mission.

I have so many people to thank for this opportunity. The list is a long one and you know who you are. Former News editor, Rick Rake once shared with me that you’re only as good as your last column and he was so correct. I was at a crossroads a few months ago if I wanted to continue on this journey and after much consideration I feel I have a bit more positive steam to blow off and thankful for the trust people have put in me. Do I have any regrets? No, not that I can recall.

Age 78, passed away Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. Jim was born on December 3, 1936 in Idzega, Friesland to Cornelis & Froukji (VanDer Schaaf) Jansen. Jim was one of eight children. Jim attended school until the age of 16. He worked for different farmers and in his spare time would enjoy skating on the canals. Jim immigrated to Canada in 1957 via a Holland America Ship to New York, bus to Ontario, then resided in BC. Jim married Ria Hoekstra on September 9, 1960. When Jim wasn’t working on the farm he enjoyed spending time in his vegetable garden, fishing on the occasional weekend and watching hockey and soccer.

He is survived by his loving wife Ria, his eight children, Wendy (John), Floria, Silvia (Murray), Casey, Rowena (Jeff), Bernadene (Rob), Jim (Kelly), and Richard. 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Jim is preceded in death by his son Dwight.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Bethel Reformed Church, 3260 Gladwin Road, 4:00pm.

Verna demonstrated her love for Jesus by example. Praying that her loved ones accept and know Jesus as she did.

Helen (Lena) Klassen, born in Waldheim Village, Manitoba on February 20, 1927, passed away on July 20, 2015 after a brief illness. Our beloved mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and great-greatgrandmother, was predeceased by her loving husband Herman, in 1993, and by her great-grandson Evan Federau in 2009. Helen is survived by 5 brothers, 5 sisters; her children; Fred Klassen, Norma Schartner, Jean (Harry) Bargen, Verna (Sam) Yankovich, 11 grandchildren, 22 greatgrandchildren & 7 great-greatgrandchildren. She was indeed a great lady and will be missed by us all. The family thanks the nursing staff of the ACE Unit at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their consistently compassionate care. Hugh went to be with his Savior on July 21, at the age of 67. He is very much missed by his wife, Jean; daughter, Angela Joy (Nathan); son, David (Nicole); grandchildren Thea, Amanya and Shota; brother, Robert; sister, Lori and many other relatives and friends.

Hugh was an avid hiker, weight lifter, and healthy life enthusiast, who enjoyed his volunteer work at MCC and M2W2. He loved his family, theological debates and dogs; but most of all, he loved his Lord, Jesus Christ.

It is with profound sadness we announce that Malcolm passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Malcolm is survived by his wife, Monica, his four children, Matthew (Angela), Daniel (Kylie), Nicole Davey (Chris) and James, and eight grandchildren. His mother, Jean Dickson, sister Dickie Thiessen, and brother Kirk as well as many relatives are also left to mourn Malcolm’s passing. Malcolm was predeceased by his father, Derek and his father-in-law in the last seven months. Malcolm was born at MSA hospital, and was always proud of his family heritage, growing up on the family dairy farm, and by the age of ten, driving the tractor and custom baling on many farms throughout Abbotsford.

After his graduation from Abbotsford Senior in 1975, Malcolm immediately entered the Heat & Frost Insulators journeyman program and in 1996, established his own company that operated with great success until his diagnosis in December. Throughout the years, he enjoyed coaching his children in soccer and fastball, playing on his slopitch team and RV’ing with friends and family. He was proud of the family home he built 27 years ago and in his final months of failing health, with pure determination he even planned and completed small projects for his hobby farm. He will be remembered for his immeasurable work ethic, as well as the courage and grace he displayed over the past seven months. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 28 at 11:00, at St. James Catholic Church, 2777 Townline Rd. with a reception to follow at The Rancho, 35110 Delair Road, Abbotsford.

Dr. Delma Ruth (nee Welch) late of Victoria, BC passed away on Monday, July 20, 2015 at the age of 81 at Douglas Care Community in Victoria, BC. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John Lennox; daughter, Annette Hubbard, sons, Philip Lennox, and David Lennox; granddaughters, Kelsey Lennox, Sarah Lennox, Carissa Hubbard and Hannah Lennox; brother, Anthony Welch; as well as extended family and friends. She is predeceased by her parents Stanley and Frances Welch, and her brother John Welch. Beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother, Ruth Lennox was also a physician, medical instructor, and church leader. She graduated from Durham medical school in 1957; one of only a handful women in her class.

On July 14, 1958 she married John Albert Lennox, and together they served for nearly a decade in Ghana, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, and later in India and Nepal. John and Ruth were the first physicians in Chetwynd, BC, and helped to develop the first hospital there.

Ruth was also the first female doctor in Abbotsford, BC, and delivered hundreds of babies in her primary care practice.

Among her many contributions to the Seventh-day Adventist church are her service as head elder of the Abbotsford congregation and her work as Women’s Ministries Coordinator for the British Columbia conference. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 3:00 pm at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC, with interment to follow at Hazelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation of British Columbia.

Mom passed away peacefully July 13, 2015 with Sharon, Becky and Amanda by her side. She has claimed the cloud that Dad has been holding for her! Together again.

Mom was born May 25, 1934 in Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1946 the family traveled to Vancouver where they resided for a year followed by a move to Victoria. In 1950, Mom met a good looking sailor boy who was to become her husband on September 5, 1953. The family moved to Aldergrove in 1966 and then to Abbotsford where they remained.

Dad passed away in 2004 and Mom has missed him very much.

In 1985, Mom and Dad decided to become snowbirds and headed out to find their winter home. They settled on Riverside Adventure Trails in Fort Mohave, Arizona. This was to be their second home for about 17 years. Much to Mom’s delight Sharon and Bob have followed in their footsteps and have found their winter home in the same RV park!

Also missing her will be her “other granddaughter” Amanda and her daughter Bella and special family friend, Ken Bradley.

Mom was lucky to have many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family that all loved and respected her.

Mom spent the last months living with Sharon and Bob in their home. She loved her visits with her great-grandson Logan – “her little guy”, as she called him. He will miss his Nana and her slippers.

The family wishes to thank all those that supported them through these difficult times.

You know who you are. We love you all.

Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Mission Hospital – you are all angels.

A private graveside service was held as her ashes were placed beside Dad. Love you now and forever Mom.
