Travelling a salmon’s route A fatal crash on Dewdney Trunk Road back in May 2012 has a woman in the courts this week.
COURTS
Impaired driver silent JENNIFER SALTMAN Special to The TIMES
A shaky-looking Christine Marchand wiped away tears in Port Coquitlam provincial court earlier this week, as she pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death. Marchand was scheduled to go to trial on three charges – impaired driving causing death, causing an accident resulting in death and dangerous driving causing death – in connection with a blazing crash in May 2012 that claimed the life of cyclist Jon Burshtynski. But instead, defence lawyer Terry La Liberté entered a plea on her behalf, before a large group of Burshtynski’s family and friends. Some were in tears during Marchand’s appearance. Liberté told the court that he didn’t want his client’s silence in court to be seen as callous disregard for the family and how they have suffered since Burshtynski’s death. A psychological report was ordered and a sentencing date will be set in October. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Marchand’

Lina Azeez
L
ina Azeez is on a journey with purpose. The young Maple Ridge woman is paddling, walking, and riding, all in the name of sustainability. She’s one of seven environmentally conscious people from across B.C. who converged upon Mount Robson Provincial Park last Thursday, as part of a 25-day, hands-on educational adventure run by the not-forprofit Rivershed Society of BC. After a few days getting acquainted with each other and their mode of travel for much of the trip – a voyageur canoe – Azeez and her travelling partners started down the mighty Fraser River on July 16. Azeez first heard about this expedition in 2008, when she was studying for her undergraduate degree in geography. “Since then it became one of those goals to aspire towards, an opportunity to experience the entire length of this dynamic river system,”Azeez said. She and the other participants were selected to take part in the Sustainable Living Leadership Program (SLLP) and during their trip, they’ll travel the route of the salmon,
taking them from the Fraser’s headwaters near Mount Robson to the shores of Vancouver – 1,400 kilometres away – by canoe, raft, van and foot. During the trip, they’ll learn about sustainable living, and responsible community and resource development. Along the way, each participant designs a sustainability project to implement in their community upon their return. Azeez said the Fraser River has a very special place in her heart, adding that the “incredible journey” salmon take has given her a better understanding of the importance of “this river system to our way of life.” What Azeez learned of indigenous ways of stewardship
on the Fraser and its thousands of tributaries also inspired her to go on this expedition. She said it’s all about finding ways of working together towards one goal: strong, healthy salmon runs – “because salmon are the building blocks of our watersheds.” When she first started with Watershed Watch, Azeez was introduced to Fin Donnelly, chair of the society hosting these journeys. “They call it the SLLP but at Watershed Watch we have an endearing name for it – the BFF, Big Fraser Float,” she said. The Rivershed society invited her to apply for the program, as much of her work has to do with looking at conservation at
the watershed level. Azeez has worked in the water and salmon conversation sector her entire career, and said the more she engages in this work, the more she realizes how “piecemeal” a lot of it is. She believes taking part in the BFF gives her an opportunity to learn about initiatives happening along the length of the Fraser, witness different land uses, and understand better the threats to the entire watershed. “And really what better way to see and experience the watershed that drains one-third of our province than by actually getting on the water and canoeing it,” Azeez said. > More at www.mrtimes.com

Senior injured in purse snatching
Mounties make arrest after suspect is involved in car accident. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com
A “shocking crime of opportunity,” has left a senior citizen injured, and landed a 28-yearold man in custody. On Monday, a woman in her 70s and a friend left a local restaurant just after 2 a.m., in the 22800 block of Lougheed Highway, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Sgt. Brenda Gresiuk. As the two women walked along the sidewalk, an unknown man approached, knocked the elderly woman to the ground, and struck her, Gresiuk explained. The assailant stole the woman’s bag and fled in a vehicle. Police were called, and while investigating the incident, received a report of a collision in East Maple Ridge. An Integrated Police Dog Services member attended and found a stolen vehicle and the driver, both matching the description from the recent robbery. The driver was arrested and “is well known to the police,” Gresiuk said. Eric Anthony Renzetti, a Port Coquitlam resident, appeared in provincial court Monday charged including robbery and assault. He has been remanded in custody.

Extras sweeten the fair
I
t’s official. There’s no more room at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Country Fest for any more events or groups. The barns, the fields, the curling rink, Planet Ice, the stage, the show rings, even the gravel parking lot – all full.
“We’re absolutely out of space,” fair manager Lorraine Bates proclaimed in the days leading up to the 2015 Country Fest. With the addition of so many new components to the two-day fair – happening this Saturday and Sunday at the Albion Fairgrounds – organizers can proudly boast that the fair is at capacity for participants. Now, they’re ready to open the gates and let spectators flood in. All the traditional events and exhibits that have made this 114-year-old fair a fixture in the community will be in place again. On top of the multiple 4-H Club and animal components of Country Fest, there’s the home, arts, and garden exhibition, the beer garden, non-stop entertainment, kids activities, farrier and backyard gardening demonstrations, a vintage market, a talent show, midway, flyball dog show, and a Cops for Cancer fundraiser. But the list of new highlights for this year’s fair is almost as long. Added to the agenda is Teen Fest, a cat fanciers competition expected to draw some 300 exhibitors and about 150 felines never before seen at the fair in Planet Ice. And, next door at the Golden Ears Winter Club curling rink, LEGO maker extraordinare Robin Sather will involve and engage kids of all ages in a special LEGO Mania event [see stories page A18]. And in keeping with the agricultural theme of this fair, there’s another addition: a blueberry festival made possible in part thanks to some federal money and efforts of retired local blueberry grower Pat Freeman. An “I love blueberries” theme is being worked in to various aspects of the fair, including home and garden competitions, the Lions pancake breakfast – complete with the berries, a blueberry photo area, a pie-eating contest, and decorations of everything from bikes to walkers with a blueberry flavour. The miraculous part about all of this, and probably one of the most difficult aspects to achieve, is keeping this annual fair free. That doesn’t happen without tremendous dedication by organizers in hunting out sponsors and supporters willing to make that possible. Congratulations to Bates and the entire Country Fest team for pulling together what is sure to be a great weekend of fun. And to all you locals humming and hawing about whether to go this year – all the new additions should sweeten the pot for you. See you this weekend at Country Fest.

preferred over some of the upscale properties located in the aforesaid grape arbour and chestnut. It was fascinating watching the young couple inspect the varied possibilities. The fascination continued with the little ones. Long before we saw them, we were privy to their conversation – which like that of human babies consisted mostly of strident requests for food, followed by a few moments of gurgling indications of contentment. But most fascinating is when they emerge – when they make that important decision to fly. Once upon a time, many years ago now, we found a robin chick huddled on the ground beneath a spruce tree whose branches seemed to attract newlywed robins the way our garage duplex attracts chickadees. How did he fall out of his nest, from way up there? Was it an accident? Was he pushed? We couldn’t be sure, but we soon learned a likely scenario. To protect Albert (his hairdo reminded
us both of Albert Einstein) from the neighbourhood cats, we placed him in an old hanging basket from the garden shed, lined with some moss and hung as high in the tree as we could reach. His parents watched out for him there, but he didn’t stay long. Albert, it appears, was quite a precocious little character. The very next day, we saw him perched on the edge of his makeshift home, staring fixedly at the ground, flexing his knees and his nearly featherless wings. He looked for all the world like a youngster contemplating a refreshing first dive into an inviting but cold swimming hole on the first day of summer. He made several such false starts, and then, one morning he was gone. When we think of Albert, even these years later, we express a hope that, like the sibling chickadees in our front yard, he made the plunge successfully and is out there right now, protecting someone’s garden. Maybe ours. Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online this week at mrtimes.com

COMMUNITY FEEDBACK
2015 CAPITAL WORKS: ROADWORKS
Mayor Nicole needs to address tent city Dear Editor,
I have written several letters to our mayor and not even a response… Dear Mayor: I am writing to you in regards to the increasing problem of the addicts and homeless in Maple Ridge. Your elective platform campaign was strongly based on the anticipated action you would take in this matter. Since that time the problem has escalated to what is
unacceptable for both the homeless and for the taxpayers of the community. Twice a week I encounter a possible life-threatening condition on my commute – either in front of my vehicle or within a few cars. I no longer shop in certain stores, as I have been threatened and feel unsafe. Two store employees that are acquaintances
End defrosting with water Dear Editor, We are now into Stage 3 of water restrictions in Metro Vancouver and a lot of the emphasis seems to have gone to the issue of lawn sprinkling. There is one other use of water that I believe we should perhaps look into as well: the common practice of defrosting frozen food by running a tap on them overnight. In a simple estimate, based on a flow rate of four litres a minute, that is 240 litres an hour or 2,400 litres per 10-hour night. That is enough drinking water for a person for almost four years in a single night, akin to taking a 10-hour shower daily or like two homes running their sprinklers for five hours each, every night! I am sure the amount is significant enough in this time of need to be careful with water use. Would the cities consider looking into this aspect of water saving, as well? Christopher Tan, Pitt Meadows
Facebook feedback Maple Ridge is another step closer to seeing Wal-Mart move into Haney Place Mall. City council was presented with a development application Monday, and readers are reacting: “I support local as much as possible, but when you can’t get what you need then I would go to Mission for a gas run & Wal-Mart or the Poco Wal-Mart. People will shop wherever they want as long as it’s available. I’ve been saying for 25 years ‘we have nothing,’ always had to go to Coquitlam Centre. I would love a Costco there or Army & Navy just my thoughts.” – Jane Tourand “How do people think this is a good thing? I grew up in Prince George and Quesnel. As soon as Wal-Mart came in, it put every mom and pop business out of business. Then everyone became Wal-Mart slaves. They have to work there because it’s the only place that has jobs. In turn they have to shop there because they get paid wages that keep them at or below the poverty line.” – Cory Taylor “The mall is dying in a City that doesn’t spend much money, and mom and pop stores close all the time. The Wal-Mart will at least bring some jobs and life into the City. My nanny needs a place to buy everything at once since my grandad had a stroke. She can’t drive and is ailing herself. A cheap cab to Wal-Mart solves many worries. Even if you hate Wal-Mart, it will help Maple Ridge.” – Breezey Stanfield

have been beaten or raped within two blocks of tent city in the last four months. There is an increasing inherent danger that needs to be dealt with. There are those who need help and those who should not be enabled. It’s your time to act and do something about this. I am very disappointed in your office as a tax-paying resident and expect that you will try to fulfill you campaign promise. Lisa Lancaster, Maple Ridge
Move camp to city property Dear Editor, Dear Ms. Read: I am not sure why the City continues to allow a homeless camp to continue on Cliff Avenue. People who live on Cliff Avenue are taxpaying citizens who have the right to quiet enjoyment of their property. I suggested before that the City move the camp to the property
owned by the district, at 227th Street and Selkirk Avenue. Why burden residents with the problems associated with the homeless camp? By moving them to the City-owned property, they are away from any residential areas, yet still close enough to walk to the Caring Place for meals. The City would find it much easier to monitor the camp and supply some sanitary facilities by putting up some porta-potties and perhaps providing a water station. How long would you allow a homeless camp at Silver Valley, in your neighbourhood, or near some of the other council members? I bet it wouldn’t last long. Why not see if Mr. [Councillor Gordy] Robson would allow them to camp on his property, now that the courts have decided that his golf course is not allowed on ALR land. Ron Mitchell, Maple Ridge
Pot advocacy solidified Dear Editor, Thank you for your editorial [Views change on pot, July 16, TIMES Opinion]. It gave me some validation that my decades of legalization activism were not spent in vain, and that I am not too crazy. I enjoy cannabis, and I am a good person. Jay Bergstrom, Forest Ranch, Calif.
Bob: Agreeing to disagree Dear Editor, Bob, I was enjoying and agreeing with you about smoking, distracted driving etc. [Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and some excuses, July 16, TIMES Opinion] and then came the jarring sentence. “The problem is like a corporation, a cigarette is an inanimate object, it doesn’t care. Huh? A corporation is in flux continually and in law is considered a

person so they have to care. They create wealth and employment, pay wages, benefits, pensions, and pay taxes – constantly innovating, reinvesting, hiring more as the business grows. Corporations also supply the income revenue for union pensions. Anyway, I agreed with 99.9 per cent of your thoughts. Cherryl Katnich, Maple Ridge
Feds are failing the people Dear Editor, In answer to MP Randy Kamp’s [Others care, July 16, TIMES Letters], actually, the Harper government has repeatedly made decisions that hurt ordinary Canadians. Our federal government fails seniors, health care, low income and middle class families. The Harper government is far behind every other country when it comes to global warming and implementing measures to save our environment. There’s more than enough money to provide Canadians with what they need; it’s all about the choices and priorities being made by an irresponsible federal government. Marie R. Robson, Maple Ridge

Province steps up with shelter
Funding for a temporary facility comes. RONDA PAYNE editorial@mrtimes.com
It was via Twitter, last Thursday, that the news first broke of provincial funding for a temporary shelter for homeless people in Maple Ridge. Following a meeting with BC Minister of Housing Rich Coleman, Maple Ridge MLA Marc Dalton posted a series of tweets, including one stating the province will fund a temporary shelter in the community to help resolve the Cliff Avenue homeless camp issue. Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read acknowledged discussions with the province and BC Housing have been going on for several weeks and the City of Maple Ridge is now working with BC Housing to find a suitable location for the temporary shelter. “This announcement clearly indicates that our local MLAs have been working for our community behind the scenes,” Read said. “This will provide the stability that our outreach workers need to help connect these citizens [of the Cliff Avenue camp] with lasting health care and housing.” The temporary shelter is seen as a critical component to end the homeless camp permanently and Read referred to the provincial announcement as a milestone in the resolution. “We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the patience and resilience of the residents and business owners on Cliff Avenue as we have worked towards this solution,” she said.

Extending special invite The annual agricultural fair in Albion has expanded to include more dedicated options for the ‘prime timer’ set. RONDA PAYNE editorial@mrtimes.com
Country Fest is an opportunity to take in the agricultural roots of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. With the event now in it’s 114th year, there’s no doubt that many local seniors attended events of years gone by and Country Fest organizer Lorraine Bates wanted to make a special effort to invite that group back to this weekend event. “They’ll have their own space for rest and refreshments,” Bates said of a new seniors’ area. “We called it Prime Timers.” The Prime Timers R&R tent is sponsored by Chartwell Retirement Residences, noted Wendy Upton of the organization’s Maple Ridge property called Willow. Bates noted the increased effort is part of a plan to target seniors and teens – the two groups most often forgotten in community events. “They remember the small-time fairs,” Bates said of seniors. “That was part of community” back in those days. The fortunate thing is that with organizers doing a little planning,

Earlier in the year, she visited the seniors centre to ensure seniors knew about the activities at the weekend festival. She invited them to attend, “either as a volunteer or just come,” she added. Parking and transportation can be an issue too, but Country Fest and Chartwell have that covered. “We have our own buses,” Upton said. While the buses will come from specific Chartwell properties, there will be one round trip scheduled on Saturday from the seniors centre on 224th Street – using their bus. Those interested in making use of the free transportation are invited to call Upton at 604-466-8602 to find out the times of departure and return.

For the second year, the Country Corner Vintage Market will be set up in the curling rink at Country Fest. Organizer Leah Faulkner of The Olde Farmhouse said the market vendors love sharing the space with the poultry show in the corner of the rink. “That’s where the country part comes in,” she noted with a laugh. There will be 30 or more vendors, each with their own unique take on vintage. “It’s all vintage,” Faulkner said. “There’s furniture, repurposed, refinished. Jewelry, some skin care products, there’s hand-made items and home decor, too.” With it being the second year of the market, Faulkner expects a steady flow of people through the space now that many discovered it last year. “The vendors definitely spend tonnes of time setting up their spot and creating their own store,” she said. Country Fest organizer Lorraine Bates
Reclaimed, upcycled and repurposed items will be found at the market in the Golden Ears Winter Club curling rink at Country Fest. Leah Faulkner (inset) of The Olde Farmhouse is hosting another Country Corner Vintage Market at this year’s fair. noted the market is a great addition to the activities at the weekend fair. “Leah and her volunteers are very welcoming to people,” Bates said. “We’ve seen the people line up [to get into the market] and it’s a real trend.” She added that the appeal of including the Country Corner Vintage Market in Country Fest is that the vintage vendors are looking for space and people and Maple Ridge’s country fair has plenty of both. It’s a win/win situation for everyone – especially those who come out to enjoy the festivities.
“People will find something unique and different and will get inspired for upcycling or reusing items,” Faulkner said. “Or they will find something unique for their home... or something that brings back memories.” She described the market as a nice way to spend time looking through things and revisiting the past while chatting with the vendors. Plus there’s that country sound of poultry in the background. “Some people have to bring in a ghetto blaster for that,” Bates said. “We have the real thing.”

A set of identical twins native to Maple Ridge is up for an Emmy. It was confirmed late last week, with the release of the nomination list for the 2015 Emmy Awards, that reality television stars Drew and Jonathan Scott are up against some tough competition and hoping to take home the award for outstanding structured reality program. Known as the Property Brothers, Drew is the real estate guru and his brother Jonathan is the licenced contractor. This couple of home-grown celebrities have a show, aptly named Property Brothers, which first debuted in January 2011. Now in its seventh season, it is viewed on W Network in Canada and HGTV in the States, plus it is seen in hundreds of countries around the world. They also have other shows, including Brother vs. Brother, Buying and Selling, Property Brothers at Home, and Off Topic with the Scott Brothers. But, it’s their work with Property Brothers that is garnering the most attention. In this show, the duo help couples find fixer-uppers and transform them into dream homes. The brothers use state-of-the-art imaging programs to unveil their plans for how the properties will look after the transformation. The potential home buyers have to take a risk to make the twins’ vision come true. > More: mrtimes.com

Pitt Meadows can boast having a resident as the youngest 4-H participant at Country Fest this year. At just five years old, Michaela Barkley will be showing her dairy calf. Michaela’s 4-H leader, Debbie Baars, heads up the North Fraser 4-H Dairy Calf Club and noted that it will be a few years before this young farmer is a full member. “Nine to 19 is the age of 4-H,” Baars said. Young participants who are not old enough to be full members are not involved in all the club activities, but Michaela will be at Country Fest this weekend competing against what is know as other “pre-clubbers” – those who are also under age nine. Duck race equals new ride A Pitt Meadows resident is the proud new owner of a sweet set of wheels, thanks to a rubber duck, the annual Rotary Duck Race, and Maple Ridge Chrysler. Dawn Alexander’s $10 duck entry was the big winner in this year’s charity race, scoring Alexander a new Dodge Dart from the local dealership – the top prize out of the six. With hundreds in attendance and temperatures in the low to mid-30s, 5,700 ducks sailed to the finish line, spectators watching and wishing it was them.
Local community and youth groups – the main reason for the race – were big winners, as well. “Prior to this year, we raised $333,333.33 for youth in the community,” said Shantz, who’s been at the helm of the event since the duck race began five years ago. “This year we raised a little over $57,000 for youth, which puts us very close to the $400,000 mark, and I want to thank everyone for their support and coming out on this very entertaining day,” he said. “We hope to carry this on as an annual event.”

Eggens sisters suit up for Canada Competing in the Pan American Games was just the start of a busy month for a pair of siblings from Pitt Meadows. COLE WAGNER editorial@mrtimes.com
There ain’t no rest for the weary. Nobody knows that better than members of Canada’s national women’s water polo team, who – after battling to a silver medal finish at the Pan American games in Toronto on July 14 – shipped off to Kazan, Russia, three days later to compete in the world championships this month. Yet, Carmen and Monika Eggens, members of the national team, sisters who hail from Pitt Meadows, and Haney Neptunes alumni, show little sign of weariness on a Skype call from their dorm in Russia. Instead, they appear focused and relaxed, with their eyes forward. If the pair carries any bitterness from the 14-3 defeat in front of a hometown crowd at the hands of their arch-rivals, U.S.A., from a week ago, it only serves to motivate the sisters to perform better in Kazan. the centre position. “We were happy to get a medal at Pan The semifinal game against Cuba, which Ams, but it wasn’t the one we wanted,” ended 14-7 for Canada, was a particularsaid Monika, who at 24 years old is the ly dominant performance by the Eggens younger of the two sisters. sisters. to chase the elusive qualification spot for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. Because there are only eight teams entered in the women’s event at the Olympics, and one spot awarded automatically to the host country (Brazil), the Canadians only have one chance to qualify – next March, at a last-chance tournament in Europe. In the meantime, the pair from Pitt are looking to build on their Pan Am result by taking advantage of a favourable group draw at World Championships this month. “We have New Zealand, Kazakhstan and Spain in our pool,” explained Monika. A first place finish in the pool would mean an automatic berth into (at the very worst) the top eight, which would be a strong finish for the Canadians. For now, the road to Rio remains the focus for Monika and Carmen, but the two haven’t ruled out sticking around for another four year Olympic cycle – wheth-
er they qualify for 2016 or not. “I’d like to play professionally in Europe, maybe stick around for another cycle or take it year by year,” said Monika. Carmen, three years older than her sister, is a little more ready for some time at home – but also wouldn’t rule out professional polo if the opportunity arose. Retirement or not, their team and their country will be relying on the pair from Pitt to bring leadership, scoring and their signature connection to the pool at world championships this month. They might not have had much rest since Pan Ams in Toronto, but Carmen and Monika Eggens are far from weary anyway – they’ll be the first to tell you they’re just getting started.

Building obsession Werewolf breed the cat’s meow LEGO creating contests will be held three times a day during the fair. ROXANNE HOOPER rhooper@mrtimes.com
As a toddler, Robin Sather had a dream of being a LEGO builder when he grew up. “Not unlike most young boys, I would think,” Sather said. But parlaying his fanatical childhood obsession with the popular building blocks into a career was unrealistic – or so he thought for much of his life. Fifteen years ago, however, the disgruntled IT guy was admittedly burned out with his existing vocation. So, after a year of backpacking around the world and doing some serious soul searching with his wife, the couple made a series of life-altering decisions. They moved from North Vancouver to Abbotsford, quit their jobs, and sought a new direction in life. “It’s time to have some fun,” he recounts saying at the time. And this time around – when contemplating his job future – Sather aspired to realize his childhood dream of being a LEGO builder. He reached out to the makers
of LEGO in Denmark, pitched them a community outreach idea, and was soon crowned among their first-ever LEGO certified professionals. As one of 15 worldwide, Sather will be in Maple Ridge sharing his true passion with guests at Country Fest, set up in the Golden Ears Curling Rink. And over the course of the two-day fair, he will build a life-sized carnival car from the ground up. It will be big enough to sit in, Sather vowed. “It will be reminiscent of what you’d see in the midway,” just not the entire ride, Sather added. He doesn’t have enough time and he can’t transport enough LEGO bricks in the back of his pickup truck to make that possible. Oh yeah, and Robin Sather in his spare time, Sather will lead a number of Ready, Set, Build contests for fellow LEGO fans – of all age – who want to stop by for a visit. On Saturday and Sunday, Sather leads three contests per day – at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. – giving the first 20 builders a half hour each to build a themed LEGO creation. The themes, he whispered, will not be revealed until moments before each contest. Some LEGO prizes will be up for grabs for the mini-building contest.
