Had the DVP moved forward, owner Rick Pater would be permitted to build new portions of the park to lower standards than modern building expectations in

order to suit the rest of the park, which was originally constructed in the ‘70s.

Due to concerns that Pater had not complied with staff suggestions to reinvest funds he would save into beautification options for the park, council chose to delay the decision until the next council meeting dated Aug. 17, said Nelson Wight, manager of planning for the District of Sparwood.

Pater responded, “Mr. Wight has made six suggestions and quite honestly the only one that’s practical is landscaping in the park.

I’m very happy to show anybody about 150 trees in the park that you can’t notice because they’re so small right now. But if there is any further interest in landscaping, I’m more than happy to provide it.”

Pater said that his primary focus is transferring the park from a private

water distribution system to the municipal system.

Currently, Phase 1 of Pater’s water system plan is complete and Units #1-24 are hooked up to town water.

Since the last council meeting when the DVPs were discussed, no further pads have been added to the district’s water supply, despite the schedule Pater brought forward to council on June 15.

Tim Hortons to open in Sparwood

ater said Phase 2 of the plan, which would have seen units #25-60 shifted off of the park’s private water supply, was meant to be complete by the end of June.

By mid-July, plans for a dozen units (#61-66 and #69-74) in Phase 3 of the plan had already fallen short.

Pater said Phase 2 is currently pending approval from Interior Health and that an engineer had requested modifications on the plan.

“I’m anticipating approval this week,” Pater said. “I’m very anxious to get this done. I will put the rest of the park on town water using existing infrastructure and I have every intention of finishing that this year.”

Mayor Cal McDougall, who first proposed deferring the expansion, said it would be prudent to deny the motion and the DVP so Pater has more time to iron out the details to move forward with Phase 2 of the distribution system.”

The park itself has been plagued by water issues for months, though Pater states that through bi-weekly testing he has concluded that no contaminants reside in the park’s waters and that the primary water problem for the park was that of pressure.

“Since decommissioning the old pipes the park now has ample pressure and I have not received any complaints in regards to leaks or sediment in the water,” Pater said. “Everything is very stable at this point.”

Outspoken residents such as Mary Jane Leppard, who was in attendance at Monday night’s hearing, have stated otherwise, describing water that is murky and discoloured.

Coun. Jenna Jensen, who is opposed to approving the expansion, said that until complaints from residents regarding the park’s water quality were fully resolved, she would remain against the DVP’s approval.

“I’m not sure a couple weeks deferral will allow the things that I, or the people [of the park], feel should be fixed will be fixed,” said Jensen. “I strongly feel that the park should be brought to a livable standard for the people who currently live there before it’s expanded forward. I understand the business aspect of it and more homes are beneficial to new residents but I don’t think that should come before the people who currently live there and have been living there who have been going through all these things.”

Jensen noted that amongst the list of livability improvements that could be made to the park, which previously included a new sign, covered bus shelter and repaving, that a park for the families who reside there would be beneficial.

Citing Pater’s delayed plan to connect the park’s 125 pads to the district’s water supply, Jensen added, “For only 25 out of 100 [pads] to be on town water, I just don’t feel like that is quite enough for me.”

Coun. John Bauer concurred and added, “Water should not be classified as an improvement of the park but as a part of doing business. I would have to see a significant amount of improvement before I consider accepting this DVP.” The motion to defer was passed 4-2 with Jensen and Coun. Margaret McKie opposing.

With the motion to defer, the call for another informal hearing is waived and a notice will not be sent out to residents when the discussion is picked up once more next month.

Searching for Screech Owls

Interns from the Nature Conservancy of Canada work a long, dark shift o’clock in the morning, and it may not even get any results.

But for two students from Ontario, who were in Fernie last week as part of their summer internship for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the task of searching dark forests for endangered western screech owls is a dream job.

Intern Mike Bagnall, 28, an Ecosystem Management Technology student from Fleming College in Lindsay, Ont., explains that the Elk Valley area is at the eastern edge of the natural range for the Interior sub-species of the western screech owl. As such, part of their task, for four nights in a row last week, was to just find out if the owls are where they think they might be.

The survey’s goal is to determine whether the population is surviving, thriving, or there at all, and to decide how best to conserve the species. It builds on surveys conducted in 2013, where screech owls were found in the Flathead Valley to the south.

If the Elk Valley survey can determine that this is truly the edge of the owls’ range, researchers will have valuable information to use for conservation efforts.

The search for these nocturnal raptors began at sundown, and involved driving between various mapped points approximately 400 metres apart, along the banks of the Elk River. The points were identified previously as spots where the owls were most likely to roost, in consultation with Jared Hobbs, a member of the Western Screech Owl Recovery Team. A group of researchers looked for them back in May as well, but with no luck. Another group will check again in the fall.

Intern Jon Kelly, 25, an Environmental Management student from the University of Toronto, explains the painstaking process of owling in near-pitch-darkness. The interns locate a survey point using GPS, then play an owl call on a special loudspeaker. And then wait, silently, for 15 minutes, before playing another call. And waiting. And then another. The hope is that the owls, if they’re in the area, will answer back to the call.

If they don’t after three tries, the interns

move on to the next point, often working until 3 a.m. or later to cover all of the points on the map.

“Part of the battle is they’re not that common,” said Bagnall. The western screech owl is listed as endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada and is also listed on Schedule One of the Canadian federal Species at Risk Act (SARA).

According to Hillary Page, director of conservation planning and stewardship for the Nature Conservancy of CanadaBC Region, the goal is to monitor areas to gather important data about the screechowl population’s vital statistics, including how quickly the population changes, and how productive the population is, to help determine its long-term viability.

“If they hear the owls call,” said Bagnall, “it’ll make all the long hours of waiting worthwhile, because it’ll be evidence they’re there.”

After three nights of silence, the odds of owls being in the area weren’t great, Bagnall acknowledged, adding, “But just because we don’t hear any, doesn’t mean they’re not there. It just means further research is required.”

Owls or not, the interns agree that working in the night forest is a fascinating, if somewhat eerie, experience.

“Standing outside in complete darkness, you can hear the rustling of the leaves,” said Kelly. “We’ve heard deer sneezes and thrushes singing.”

Fire Ban in Effect for the East Kootenay

At noon Pacific Time on Friday, July 3, 2015, campfires were prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and to protect public safety.

This ban also includes any fires within the District of Elkford. All local fire pit permits have been rescinded until further notice.

The campfire prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. This measure is in addition to Category 2 and Category 3 open burning prohibitions that are already in effect. For more information visit www.bcwildfire.ca.

The District of Elkford is planning to begin flushing and CCTV (video inspection) work on the sanitary and storm sewer mains in the areas of town outlined on the map below. The work is set to begin July 20, 2015 daily until completion. Please use caution in the area of the work and be prepared

District Bylaw Enforcement is patrolling for unsecured garbage and garbage bins that are at the curb prior to scheduled pick up. A person who has left garbage out contrary to the Solid Waste Removal and Disposal Bylaw No. 674, 2006 will be deemed to have fed wildlife intentionally. The fine for intentionally feeding wildlife is $400.

A lot is changing here at The Free Press. I’ll be leaving for Ontario tomorrow morning and our reporter Sarah is travelling back to Vancouver at the end of the month.

After spending nearly a year and a half in Fernie, I am definitely going to miss this quaint town.

Working for The Free Press, I’ve come to recognize a lot of names and faces around the valley.

In fact, last week while I was covering the Tony Servello Senior Open, I began writing down the names of a group of women I had taken a photo of only to realize I had spoken with several of them previously.

Getting to know and recognize those familiar faces is something I’m definitely going to miss moving back to the big city. It’s common to bump into someone you know while you’re cruising around Fernie. Most of the time, while I’m out running errands, I’ll run into several familiar faces. I get the chance to stop and chat with locals on a regular basis and that’s one thing I’ve come to love about living in a small town.

Working for a newspaper in a small town, you quickly familiarize yourself with individuals.

You know exactly the right person to call when something happens and they seem to expect your phone call and welcome the chance to chat with you.

Things here seem slower than they are in the big city. People actually communicate with their neighbours. They chat with acquaintances.

People here actually stop to smell the roses.

Even looking back at my coverage of council, I feel as though I developed some great relationships, and I know Sarah feels the same way about her coverage of Sparwood council.

And with so many 20-30 year olds moving to Fernie on their own, individuals begin to establish their own families, welcoming friends as if they were a brother or sister.

Here at The Free Press, my co-workers have taken on the role of a family. From the concerned, motherly co-worker to the bratty older sister (me), we’ve established a wonderful dynamic here, both in and out of the workplace. It’s going to be very difficult to leave these lovely ladies.

At the same time, I know our new editor Katie Smith and our new reporter Leah Scheitel will be welcomed to The Free Press with open arms.

Fernie Nordic Society reflects on successful year

he Fernie Nordic Society (FNS) held their annual general meeting (AGM) outside in the sunshine near the half-constructed warming hut at the head of the society’s trail system on Sunday, July 19.

Society president Megan Lohmann happily reported on the successful year the FNS had undergone, particularly the leap in membership from 388 to 573 registered members.

“The 2014/15 season was by far the Fernie Nordic Society’s most significant season,” said Lohmann.

It may come as no surprise that marijuana is the most frequently used illegal drug in Canada. With that in mind consider the consequences of trying to drive while under the influence.

Driving under the influence of marijuana can be compared to driving under the influence of alcohol.

When driving “high” specific skills needed to drive are compromised, including; • Judgement – the ability to judge space and time is altered.

• Reaction Time – the ability to stop and start immediately becomes difficult.

• Perception – difficulties arise for the driver to pay attention to what is happening around the vehicle.

• Alertness – user becomes too relaxed and drowsy • Concentration – while under the influence it is difficult for the driver to pay attention to important details, often becoming distracted.

Have the courage to refuse a ride from anyone under the influence of substances and perhaps suggest better alternatives. Drivers especially should make wise choices this school summer holidays.

Are You Parked Legally?

In order to provide the safest environment possible, the District of Sparwood would like to remind all vehicle owners to be aware of where they can and cannot park.

When parking, be sure you aren’t obstructing the view of nearby crosswalks and stop signs as this could pose a threat to pedestrians and people driving by. Curb sides that have been painted yellow are prohibited to park by, as well as the marked disabled parking spots, unless you have the proper permit to do so.

Vehicle owners can park for a maximum of 24 hours on public streets and parking lots before being penalized.

Failure to comply with this bylaw may result in a fine, or your vehicle being towed under the Sparwood Traffic, Parking and Highways Regulation Bylaw No 472, 1987.

As a reminder, the District of Sparwood sprinkling regulations are in effect from June 1 through September 30 each year, to promote water conservation.

In order to keep our streets attractive and safe, the District would like to remind all residents to please store your garbage in animal proof containers. Place your garbage out between 5:00 am and 8:00 am on the morning of pick up.

Residential waste collection is limited to two waste containers (not exceeding 140 litres in total) per household which must be safely contained. Tags ($1.50 per bag) are available at the District Office for any additional waste you need to dispose of, or you can drop it off at the Transfer Station (1001 Highway 3) at no charge Monday thru Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (closed on Sundays and Statutory Holidays).

Commercial waste containers are required to be kept closed at all times and secured to prevent wildlife from accessing contents in the container.

Your help and compliance is appreciated. Keeping your property free of attractants (garbage and bird feeders) will cause bears and other wildlife to move on, resulting in a safer community and avoiding the unnecessary destruction of bears. ernie’s 2nd Avenue was shut down for four blocks to accommodate the first Sunday Social of the season.

This weekend’s theme was Discover Fernie, with bingo cards inviting social-goers to enjoy Fernie’s businesses that line the city’s main downtown street.

Fun family activities were taken advantage of readily, including a bouncy castle, street chess and checkers, jump rope, facepainting, sidewalk chalk and a costume photobooth.

In the weeks to come, entertaining features like the Dog Days of Summer and Fernie’s Got Fashion will entertain guests with Fernie’s top dogs giving it their best in speed and agility competitions, while local retailers will highlight the most popular trends of the summer with a fashion show.

Mary Jane Leppard – a real “Valley” girl

Mary Jane (MJ) Leppard, (née Chudik) was born the second of four children to father Willie Chudik, born in Morrissey Mines and mother Norma Bossio born in Fernie.

As children, the Chudik clan would go for Sunday outings huckleberry picking.

“Dad took us to Coal Creek for bush rides and then to Elko for ice cream. We did not have seat belts, and we would cruise all the dirt roads. He would show us where everyone lived,” MJ recalled.

“Every second Sunday we would go to the cemetery. Dad would take the lawnmower and mow the [family] graves. We would put flowers on them. Everybody would be up at the cemetery. No one looked after it back then.”

MJ’s mother Norma, a devout Catholic, was a stay-at-home mom after the children were born, but returned to work at the Fernie Hospital once they got older.

“She was a coffee lady. Every day, Monday to Friday, the ladies would go to each other’s houses to catch up on all the gossip,” Mary Jane noted.

MJ’s father worked for the Department of Highways, “Back then the highways were in amazing shape as they worked 24/7.”

In 1985, only a few months after retirement, at age 65 Willie passed away.

MJ recalls her grandmother living with the family at one time.

“Mom’s dad passed away when the family was young. Her brother took care of the family. He owned the Hilltop Café in Elko.”

Norma passed away in 2003 at the age of 74.

School for MJ started in trailers at Isabella Dicken Elementary School until Grade 6, at which time her class moved into the basement of the old high school.

“We played hide and seek or tag at the former Coal Company, now the City Yards. We were not allowed to go near the river, so

not a lot of locals know how to swim,” she laughed. “Sometimes the snow was so deep in winter we would slide off the garage roof on our toboggans.”

At the age of 16, MJ worked at the Shell gas station and bought a motorcycle. After finishing school she worked part-time for Social Services, then at the police station and on to Westar until the layoffs.

In 1983, Mary Jane married Hart Leppard and together they have three children, Erika, Jarrod and Courtney.

Mary Jane now resides in Sparwood and works for Moffatt Supply.

Of her relocation from Fernie, MJ shared that she feels she was forced out of her hometown, where she was born and raised, by high housing prices.

“Fernie used to be such a nice little community. That is what drew people here. I miss walking around and seeing people,” she remarked.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, MJ has spent years fighting for what she feels is right, including the snow plowing in front of the green mail boxes, the school health policy, and most recently for water at her home in the Spardell Trailer Park.

In the spirit of giving back, Mary Jane also spent 15 years as the coordinator for the Party Program, 12 years teaching Catechism, and four years as a marriage commissioner.

A girl’s trip to Maui in 2014 and the Bahamas this year has become a tradition for the Leppard women which they hope to continue.

These days, when she is not out in the bush cutting firewood with her chainsaw, fixing her carport, splitting wood, building something or baking up a storm, Mary Jane finds her greatest joy in spending time with her granddaughter, Ally.

With Chudik passion and pride, and the strength to fight for what she believes in, Mary Jane is a fearless “face of the valley.”

Author Toni Morrison is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist known for her rich themes and vivid dialogue.

Family golfing; a new lifestyle

t’s not so long ago that golf was the reserve of businessmen. But times change and today the number of families playing golf never stops growing. Some clubs are still reticent about opening their doors to women and children but there are a few exceptions including a club in Eastern Canada, the Pinegrove Country Club, founded in 1957. Over the years this club has become more family oriented. Today, 70 per cent of their customers are families.

It’s in this way that a young business couple and their three children chose to become members. Hugo and Caroline and their children aged 7 (KellyAnn), 14 (Charles) and 15 (Eve) have a shared passion: golfing!

All the children have played golf since they were 3 years old.

Last year, this club had 42 members aged from 10 to 18 years. These young people must follow the same rules of behaviour as

A young sportsman like Charles appreciates this environment so much that he spends his Summer holidays, with his friends, at the junior camp reserved for 10 to 15 year olds. He’s on the golf course every morning at 6:30 a.m.

As soon as the warm weather arrives, during school holidays, the parents leave their children at the golf club before going to the office. While Charles plays his daily 36 holes, Eve prefers to play 9 holes and then go swimming at the club’s pool with her friends. The young people even have a lounge which is reserved for them. At the end of the day, all the family meet at the club to play a last 9 holes while talking about their respective days.

The life of a golf pro

hen you watch professional golf on T.V., you get to see world-class games played on the best courses in North America. And the winner walks away with a nice sixfigure cheque. Who wouldn’t love to live this kind of life?

Unfortunately, it’s not as glamorous as it looks. Reaching this level requires a lot of sacrifices. Pro golfers have to spend their winters away from their families in order to practice all year. They have to play mini-tours to improve their competitive game, they constantly live out of a suitcase and travel on a tight budget. That means often having to stay with members of the hosting club and carpooling with competitors.

When a golfer makes it to a major tour, professional life might seem more attractive because of the prize to be won. But keep in mind that only 50 per cent of the players in each tournament will walk away with a cheque, even though all of them had to pay for their plane ticket, hotel room and car rental. To retain one’s spot on the professional circuit for the following year, each pro must win a certain amount of money. If not, he or she must re-qualify.

Players who make it to the top ranks can’t sit back and enjoy the good life. They must constantly improve their physical, mental and technical abilities; otherwise they will soon be outplayed by their competitors.

Concerts and Craft Fairs

By Sarah Kucharski Free Press Staff Summer in Fernie comes with Summer Socials that shut down the downtown streets and invite people to enjoy the great weather and food the city has to offer.

Each Wednesday evening, the Concert and Craft Fair Series takes over the block outside the Arts Station to host a Fernie Craft Fair.

Jewelry vendors had their wares out for passers-by to admire and food trucks like the hit Chopstick Truck offered Vietnamese dishes to keep attendees satisfied.

Fernie summer favourite Happy Cow Ice Cream also had cones available for those looking for a sweet treat.

A beverage garden for aged 19+ attendees, pulled pork on a bun and freshly-made lemonade also made culinary decisions difficult for Summer Social attendees.

The Fernie Library book bike also offered options for kids to read while waiting for the whimsical singer-songwriter Jenny Ritter to take the stage and entertain guests.

Ritter, a west coast musician, kept guests entertained with her acoustic stylings and sweet voice that was a relaxing partner to that evening’s warm weather.

Another great week of golf had 22 players join us this week at the Fernie Golf & Country Club for a round of Ladies' Day Golf.

Our numbers were down a little as a few of the regulars were away at tournaments this week.

T

he rain didn’t stop avid golfers from heading over to the Fernie Golf & Country Club on July 16 for the Tony Servello Senior Open Tournament.

Approximately 76 golfers participated in the annual event.

“It was a great success,” Fernie Golf & Country Club General Manager/Executive Professional Mel Dies said. “Numbers were up [from last year].”

Aside from a half an hour thunder and rain delay, senior golfers spent the day enjoying hits on the green.

The tournament was established in the early ’80s in memory of Tony Servello — an active member of the community who was instrumental in the promotion, expansion and development of the Fernie Golf and Country Club.

Tony Servello Junior presented overall winner Larry Stach with a golf cart plaque in addition to a cat skiing pass.

Event organizer Bruce Elson said that additional prizes were presented to category winners, including first place Low Net winner Bill Pachara, 2nd place Low Net winner Gino Guzzi and 3rd place Low Net winner Rick Schroeder.

In addition to prizes, golfers enjoyed hot dogs and sodas.

The next tournament at the Fernie Golf & Country Club runs Aug. 8, 2015 and is the 37th Annual He & She Golf Tournament.

acers decked out their bikes appropriately for the SCOTT Thursday Night Race Series’ third weekly race.

The race this week took place on Top Gun trail. Some participating riders affixed spikes to the tops of their helmets and metallic skulls to the fronts of their bikes to coincide with the series’ first themed race: “Pimp Your Ride.”

Others donned wigs and rode the trails in style with leopard print on their handlebars and seat.

“It was a great race,” said Events Coordinator at Fernie Alpine Resort Jeni Pearson.

This week’s top winners in the ‘adult’, ‘kids’, ‘master’ and ‘youth’ categories were Luke Stevens and Megan Rose in the Adult Male and Female divisions, respectively, Jacob Rosenegger in the ‘Kids Male’ category for the second time in the series, Renee Nadon and Derek Bird for the ‘master’ class, and Micah Morris and Seth Amundsen for the Youth Female and Male slots.

Bird has occupied the top position in the male master category consistently for the entire series thus far.

The course varies each week.

Potential participants can register at the Adventure Centre by 6:30 p.m.

ith no team in the Elk Valley to play on, Nicole and Kelli Klein joined Lethbridge Softball to be able to continue to play the sport they love.

The fastball team played three tournaments together, placing first and second in two of them before deciding they would end the season representing Lethbridge at U19 Girl's Provincials held in Leduc, Alta.

The team had a goal of winning a medal, but competing with teams that play in

leagues and city championships, medaling would be a tough expectation to achieve.

The seven-team tournament featured city champions from Calgary and Edmonton.

Lethbridge went 2-2 in the round robin tournament, then lost by one run to undefeated Edmonton in the semifinal.

The game was exciting to watch and had drawn a crowd to watch Lethbridge compete with Edmonton, who had up until then run the tournament.

Lethbridge came away with a 12-9 bronze medal win against a team from Delburne.

Valley Riders work to assemble arena

The Valley Riders have been working on completing their arena, and Valley Riders secretary Joanne Emslie said she was pleased to have the weather cooperate with the group’s first work party.

“We had sunny skies and dedicated volunteers,” said Emslie of the affair.

A skid steer was donated to the group by FR Rental to smooth out sand for the Valley Riders’ outdoor arena as well as to move panels from storage.

“The volunteers [nine in total] spent the day

moving panels and pounding the posts that outline the arena,” said Emslie.

Future parties to assist with the construction work of the arena will be hosted over the coming months to continue assembling the area’s encircling panels.

“Projects like this are greatly dependent on volunteers and donations. The Valley Riders would like to extend a huge thank you to all the people and businesses who have helped us get this far,” Emslie noted with gratitude.

Prospective volunteers are encouraged to attend the Valley Riders Annual General Meeting as a new executive will be voted in when the meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m. on July 29 at the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce.

“Anyone interested in volunteering and riding is encouraged to come,” Emslie said.

Hiking through Fernie’s wild nature Guided tours through Wildsight offered for the summer

P

arked on the backside of Morrissey Ridge, hiking guide Graham Preston stands at the seemingly invisible mouth of a trail that will take the group gathered before it up to see a fossil — supposedly the largest of its kind — that remains relatively hidden in the Fernie mountains.

This is how Fernie’s Wildsight branch kicked off the first season of its Wild Nature Tours, previously known as Fernie Nature Tours under Lee-Anne Walker’s leadership, on Thursday, July 9.

Each of the five Wild Nature Tours offered this summer will be accompanied by an interpretive guide, like Preston, to educate hikers on that trek’s theme.

“Not only are we taking people hiking, but we’re teaching them about the environment, which is why each of our hikes has its own theme,” said Wildsight branch coordinator Megan Kelly.

Preston concurred.

“The goal isn’t to stand and listen to somebody spout information.

The idea is to come out and make it fun, make it engaging and a little more interactive,” he said.

The hike itself followed on this promise, with frequent stops scattered along the trek’s route that took the group across the mountain’s face, down into its creekbeds and tiptoeing across trunks strewn across a path cleared by a recent mudslide.

There were moments where Preston would lean down to pick up a seemingly innocuous rock off the mountain floor to detail how the textured waves on its surface indicated the direction a body of water had traveled across its façade for thousands of years.

Preston also presented a collection of fossils that had been found on Fernie’s mountains — the casing of a prehistoric shrimp that had

crawled into a small tunnel and died, the remnants of a small snail and others.

“It’s crazy just how many fossils there are in the area. On any given hike, you can probably just pick one up off the ground,” he said.

Informational tidbits about the formation of fossils like the ammonite at the end of the hike was provided amongst sunset-hued views of Fernie’s mountain ranges and a brief geological history of the area that explained how a tropical sea creature several millions of years old came to rest in the rocky region of Fernie.

“There are so many different ecosystems just around here in such a small distance,” Kelly said. “So our goal is to educate people and tell them about all the things you can see on a hike.”

The Ammonite Hike itself took the group on a three hour-long trek to view the four foot-long and four foot-wide fossil of an ancient sea creature resembling a shelled squid partially embedded in rock.

The group included one-time Fernie resident Barbara Koontz who took the guided hike as an opportunity to become reacquainted with the area.

Hikes that target enthusiasts whose skill ranges from beginner (the Ammonite, provincial park and Castle Mountain hikes), to intermediate (Ridge Walk at the ski hill and the Mount Fernie summit), and all the way to advanced (the legendary Heiko’s Trail) will be offered this summer.

“That’s the legendary hike that I think should be on everyone’s bucket list,” said Kelly of Heiko’s Trail.

An overnight hike to the Flathead is also available.

ore than a dozen dancers from Fernie recently returned from performing in Disneyland, something the principle director of the Creative Energy Arts Factory Alana Rybar said left the children with incredible memories.

Rybar said of the 753 dancers from Canada, the United States and Australia performing, 14 were from Fernie.

The first two days gave the dancers an opportunity to attend dance classes and workshops with the Disney Performing Arts teachers, she said in a release.

“This was an incredible experience, as many of these professionals are on Broadway or have danced and choreographed with the likes of J-Lo, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake. The following day was filled with photo shoots and rehearsals, and then there was the big performance down Main Street USA in Disneyland,” Rybar said, adding the dancers performed Hairspray’s “You Can’t Stop the Beat”.

The Fernie group was lucky because all three pieces the dancers auditioned for were selected for the Dance the Magic Showcase performance on the closing day, she said.

“The Fernie dancers performed at the Big Thunder Jamboree in Disneyland in front of a huge audience,” said Rybar.

Rybar added that there were more than 50 people from Fernie who went to Disneyland to enjoy the experience and to cheer on the dancers.

“There were a lot of proud parents, grandparents and siblings in the crowd.”

The great part about the experience was it was all about exposition and performance and dance, and not about competition, Rybar said.

Ted was born on January 16, 1940 in Fernie, BC to Ernie and Nellie Lightburn. He was raised on the family farm in Jaffray, BC. Ted went to high school at the Old Waldo School and worked in heavy construction around the province and spent time trucking on Vancouver Island. He moved back to Jaffray and founded Rosen Lake Sand And Gravel and Will-O-Bend Golf & RV. Ted and Marge retired in Cranbrook in 2006 and Ted kept busy doing repairs and maintenance for old friends and neighbours and cutting grass with his John Deere.

Ted is survived by his best friend and wife Marge, his daughter Debby of Victoria, son Jay (Laurie) of Jaffray, grandsons Matthew and Chase, his mother Nellie of Jaffray, brother Rick (Nina) of Jaffray, nephew Wade, nieces Louanne, Kelly and Christine and many cousins and good friends.

As per Ted’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Thank you to the nurses, doctors and staff at East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Those wishing to remember Ted and make a donation in his honour may do so to the Cranbrook Hospice Society, #230, 20 – 23rd Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 5V1.
