The B.C. government is reviewing its penalties for those who start forest fires with campfires or discarded cigarette butts, as losses pile up from a severe early fire season.

One tree faller has been killed as the B.C. Wildfire Service continues to work against 175 active wildfires, down from 200 since the start of the week due to cooler weather and showers. The service has tackled more than 1,000 forest fires so far this year, about a third of them human caused.

“There are some who have suggested you can’t legislate against stupidity,” Forests Minister Steve Thomson said. “But if exploring the idea of increasing fines or acting on ideas that mean more people will get the message, I think we should be prepared to have a look at it.”

Witnesses can report careless smokers or breaches of the province-wide outdoor fire ban with the same phone numbers as to report wildfires, 1-800663-5555 or *5555 on a mobile phone.

Of the 14 new fires Monday, two are suspected to have been human-caused. About 375 of this season’s fires are listed as human-caused, burning 44,000 hectares.

Most new forest fire starts this week have been from lightning storms in the Kootenay region, but most were accompanied by rain and no large new fires have been added.

States of local emergency continue in the Cariboo, SquamishLillooet and AlberniClayoquot Regional Districts as of Tuesday.

College of the Rockies students participate in Kenya exchange

Four College of the Rockies nursing students recently took part in a two-week exchange in Nyeri, Kenya. The trip was made possible by the College’s International department as part of the Maternal Access

and Infant Survival for Health Services (MAISHA) project and facilitated by long-time College partner Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT).

The four students, Jordanna McGregor,

Jacqueline Strauss, Sylvia Breton and Angela Hoover are enrolled in the College’s Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) and Practical Nursing programs. College of the Rockies’ Health, Human and Family

Services instructor Jeff Quinn and Okanagan College’s Chair of the BSN program, Monique Powell, also participated in the exchange.

While in Kenya, the students were able to observe the instruc-

tion and practice of health services from a Kenyan perspective while also learning from the Canadian instructors who accompanied them.

“This was a lifechanging experience that I will forever cher-

ish,” said Hoover. “I was able to observe many differences in maternal health care between Canada and Kenya and witnessed many different cultural nursing practices.”

“This experience will never be taught in a class,” agreed Breton.

“There wasn’t one day where I felt that I wasn’t learning something.”

The exchange proved to be educational on many levels. “It has transformed my outlook on life,” said Strauss. “It opened my eyes and heart to the endless possibilities and directions to take my future nursing practice. I was also able to enhance my personal sense of community.”

The learning wasn’t limited to that of the students, however.

Quinn and Powell led several classes over the duration of their stay and found the experience valuable for their own professional development.

“It was a great opportunity to teach, learn and participate in nursing within a different cultural climate. We will be able

to use what we experienced in Kenya in our personal teaching and nursing practices in the future,” added Quinn.

It was not all work for the students and instructors. A midtrip excursion to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy provided an opportunity for them to experience Kenya’s diverse wildlife closeup, while providing a much-needed break before resuming a second busy week at the MAISHA health facilities.

College of the Rockies’ Manager, International Projects and Partnerships, Moritz Schmidt is pleased his department was able to provide this opportunity to the students and staff and is thankful for the reception they received.

“DeKUT and MAISHA coordinator Winnie Koima worked tirelessly to accommodate us and deserves our utmost appreciation for being so welcoming,” he said.

Kimberley male arrested, linked to other thefts in the city On July 15, a 26 year old male was arrested in Kimberley for Shoplifting.

Subsequent follow up by investigators linked him to a Break and Enter along with several thefts in Kimberley.

Over the past several weeks there have been numerous thefts in the Kimberley area. Police have been focusing their efforts on making an arrest, following up on leads and implementing some covert investigative techniques.

During the arrest, police were able to gain additional evidence to support charges on other incidents. Currently the subject is in custody and police will be taking him before a Judicial Justice of the Peace later today.

Police are recommending three charges of Theft, Break and Enter and Wear a Disguise.

This is an excellent example of police and

the public working together. Kimberley General Duty members were able to

quickly follow up based on information they had gathered over the last few weeks.

The Cranbrook/ Kimberley Crime Reduction Team assisted in the investi-

gation and was instrumental in linking several crimes to the individual.

Letter: Flick your butt, maybe lose your car This wildfire season has been one of the most challenging in recent memory.

As of July 14, fire crews have responded to 1,083 fires throughout the province - compared to 523 at the same time a year ago.

Of those fires, we know over one-third are human caused. That’s 375 fires, leading to an estimated 43,718 hectares going up in flames.

We must send a clear message to those that carelessly start wildfires that their behaviour will not be tolerated. That’s why the

Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has asked me to take a look across government at the current structure of fines and penalties for people who cause wildfires, and consider new ways to crack down on those careless acts.

Should we double the fine for failing to extinguish a campfire?

Should we ban those who break campfire bans from using our provincial parks?

Should we impound the vehicles of those who flick lit cigarette

butts from their car windows? These are serious actions, but I think we need to at least consider them to send the message that enough is enough.

The vast majority of British Columbians are respectful, careful people who help protect our forests from devastating wildfires.

But there are still too many individuals who haven’t heard the message and continue to make careless decisions that lead to wildfires.

As a former law enforcement officer, I’m fully aware of the challenges to enforce these laws and the need to raise awareness to end these destructive acts. It’s often said that you can’t legislate

against stupidity, but if exploring the idea of harsher penalties for careless acts means more people get the message, we must do it.

Naturally occurring fires from sources like lightning are difficult enough for our dedicated firefighters to handle. If we’re going to continue to ask them to put their lives on the line to keep people and property safe, we need to do everything we can to end behaviours that lead to needless wildfires. ~Mike Morris Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations

Letter: Humans kill more birds than cats So the great deer culler now wants to spread fears about domestic cats (re: letter to the editor, Kootenay Advertiser, July 13).

As a so-called conservationist and lover of the great outdoors, he should know everything has its place in creation and yes the magnificent ecosystem(s) even including domestic cats.

It is very normal as an inborn instinct for some cats to go catch a bird or even a mouse.

Mice multiply even faster and believe it or not are all over, even in Cranbrook. Many cats are house cats.

They stay in. Some are not. Guess what is really killing the birds?

Humans.

Humans created chemicals, pollution, noise and electrical pollution. Humans approved culling of geese and other types of birds and even licensed bird hunters and non licensed climate change. Billions of chickens and turkeys get killed yearly and eaten by humans.

When I was growing up we never had any pet cats. Years later I had the privilege to have three. I can tell you and others they are wise, intuitive, instinctive, comforting, playful at times, inquisitive, with individual personalities. Some of our neighbours are thankful one helps keep mice populations down. I’ve only known that one to have killed a bird

twice in the past six years now. Most birds sense and have wings and know to fly away actually. In nature the weak or ill get taken, remember.

As for diseases, humans carry and spread illness too.

Most and certainly many of our pets out there get vaccinated.

Even dewormed. Even bird poop can contain disease. More and more cats over where you live - Welp!

Did you notice more and more humans too? Subdivisions, new houses, etc. There are even plenty of skunks around and the occasional marten too.

Actually we are all in trouble on this earth.

Every living thing. The earth changes, climate changes are proof enough. ~Rhonda (Jackson) Brass, Cranbrook.

Our club is not only comprised of animal projects such as lamb, beef and swine but also includes: foods, small engines and cloverbuds. 4-H has come

a long way from the farm to include those who may live in a more urban setting.

Cloverbuds is for children aged 6-8, which explores all of the projects that are available in 4-H. This year they focused on sewing and outdoor living.

All members received a sewing kit, made a pin cushion and made tents, thanks to the sponsorship of the

FCC. This program allows the kids to see which aspect they wish to be involved in once they reach the age of 9. The Small Engine group restored a farm tractor. The tractor was donated to the club, in a non-working order and was then re-built. This brought huge satisfaction and fascination to many of the members, as most of the members had never restored an engine before. This group’s leader is Jody Murdoch. The FCC grant allowed the group to purchase parts to restore the engine.

Along with an informational sign, the goal of this project is to raise awareness about bat conservation in the

Kootenays. Last week two of our members participated in a bat count at Baynes Lake Community Centre and helped count over 700 bats and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. With education, there are many communities are now involved in the bat conservation project.

Mayor Pratt explained he’d met with Jeff Williams, who is involved with the air show, prior to Monday’s meeting.

“When he came to see me he was selling tickets, so I did buy a ticket from him and when I saw the prizes were being offered — it’s a $10 ticket and the prizes are awesome. I think there are six prizes and they are all awesome.”

Pratt said he then decided to buy a couple tickets, before ultimately asking for a couple books.

“I took a couple books of tickets, then I said, ‘give me six more,’” he said. “I’m challenging all the councillors to take a book of tickets, there’s 10 tickets in a book. So I think we can show we’re serious about getting this thing off the ground

and being the economic driver that it is, we’re proud to support it too. I’m hoping you’ll accept the challenge.”

Local wakeboarders fill the podium in wakeboard competition Riders from the three western Canadian Provinces participated in the first Water Ski and Wakeboard Alberta (WSWA) Wake Tour Stop of the 2015 season, and three Cranbrook wakeboarders ended the day on the podium.

Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame inducts Kimberley-born Josh Dueck

A pair of winter athletes that includes one born in Kimberley, and a year-round community booster, will be inducted into the Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame.

Two-time Olympian and snowboard cross star Drew Neilson, triple Paralympic Games sit ski medalist Josh Dueck and longtime volunteer John Topping will enter the shrine Oct. 17 at the Village Green Hotel.

“We are honoured to choose these three highly worthy people for induction this fall,” said shrine director Roger Knox.

“It was an easy unanimous decision. We hope the public will lend their support and help us celebrate the enormous contributions to sport by Drew, Josh and John.”

The Hall of Fame will also present a special tribute to the late Lew Neilson (Drew’s father), who is in the shrine for auto racing and hang gliding.

Meet the new inductees: Josh Dueck: Born on Jan. 13, 1981 in Kimberley, Dueck is a Canadian alpine skier who won a silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympics in the men’s slalom sitski event. On Feb. 3, 2012, he became the first person to perform a backflip on snow in a sit ski, earning him world-wide notoriety and an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He is a vocal advocate for workplace safety and accessibility in sport, and in 2013 gave a TED Talk about his experiences. Dueck claimed silver and gold medals at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia, where he was Canada’s flag

bearer.

He was a former freestyle skier and coach before he became disabled when he overshot a demonstration jump in March 2004 at Silver Star Mountain Resort, breaking his back.

As an ace sit-skier, Dueck has also won gold in Mono Skier X at the 2011 X Games, bronze at the 2012 X Games and has won multiple IPC World Cup podiums and is the 2009 world downhill champion.

Drew Neilson: Born on June 15, 1974 in Vernon, Neilson won nine races on the FIS World Cup Tour and

had 19 podiums in 14 seasons. Neilson won the Crystal Globe as the 2007 over-all snowboard cross World Cup champion and took home the bronze medal at the 2003 FIS World Championships in Kreichberg, Austria.

Neilson went to the 2006 Turin Olympics where he finished 17th after being taken out in the early rounds of competition by another boarder.

His close friend Seth Wescott went on to win the gold medal at the inaugural Olympic event. Neilson was 11th at the Vancouver Olympics.

Other victories include gold medals at the 2000 ESPN Winter X Games and Gravity Games, multiple victories on the ISF Swatch World Boardercross Tour and winning Jeep King of the Mountain World Pro Tour.

John Topping: Born on June 30, 1942 in Vancouver, Topping is a John Oliver Secondary graduate who moved to Vernon in 1976. He worked in telecommuncations and retired at age 54, getting colon and lymph node cancer the year after. Cancer did not slow Topping down.

He founded the high-

ly successful Funtastic Slo-Pitch Tournament 31 years ago. The tournament has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local sporting facilities and groups while injecting $4 million into the North Okanagan economy each summer. Upon moving to Vernon, Topping served as the fundraising director of the Coldstream Boy Scouts. He is now doing the same for Venture Training and previously was chairman for the Cancer – Walk for the Cure and a director for Vernon Special Olympics. He is a director with the Tim Hortons Athlete and

Team of the Year and Sport Leader awards and is a past winner of the Ernie Kowal

Memorial Award for distinguished community service.

Scars and pain

If you are like me, you have a few scars on your body. I suppose we now take surgery for granted but it wasn’t too long ago that cutting through the skin to try to help someone was a very dangerous affair with many people dying from infection. While opening and closing the skin is now a safe and standard practice, it does come with a hidden long term risk: pain. Cutaneous nerves are sensory nerves to the skin that are always damaged when the skin is cut.

These nerves lie just under the skin and cover the entire body. Motor nerves make muscles move and some of these nerves also travel close to the skin and are often damaged when the skin is cut. In the 1860’s a doctor named Hilton gave a series of lectures highlighting his anatomical discovery: the nerve supplying a joint also supplies the muscles that move the joint and the skin covering the muscles that move the joint.

Because of Hilton’s Law, a damaged nerve can cause pain in the skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. Scars are dense, fibrous structures that can

squeeze, pinch, constrict and entrap nerves. Even if the nerve itself has healed properly, the physical irritation that a scar puts on a nerve can cause long term pain. Interestingly, this pain can be felt at a great distance from the scar. This remote pain, also called referred pain, is primarily due to the role of fascia. Fascia is a fibrous layer of tissue that wraps our muscles and organs and keeps us looking like people, rather than blobs of tissue. It is like a spider web and when one area of fascia is damaged (say, by a scar) it can pull on the rest of the fascial layer and cause pain locally or somewhere else in the body. It is for these reasons that if you have scars and pain, you should consider getting your scars treated. Scar therapy is a simple process of breaking up the dense fibrous structure of the scar. One method involves the injection of the scar with a dextrose and water solution. This approach does two things: it breaks up the scar and it calms and heals the nerves. The results can be a remarkable and immediate relief of chronic pain.

Janice “Billy” Salomons (nee Loader) It is with profound sadness the family announce the passing of Billy Salomons on Sunday, July 12th, 2015.

She will be dearly missed by her husband John; her children Lisa Blais (Chris), Paul Salomons (Amy), Peter Salomons (Lindsay), Teresa Chambers (Brad) and Coralee Salomons, her brother John Loader (Amy), her beloved grandchildren, nieces, family members and her many dear friends.

Billy faced her battle with cancer with courage and grace and never let her diagnosis stop her from loving and living life to its fullest. During her final days she was surrounded by many of her loved ones and friends and she passed away with her husband and soulmate by her side.

Billy will be remembered as the “love and sunshine” in many of our lives and will be dearly missed.

A celebration of Billy’s life will take place with family and friends on August 22nd, 2015. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Billy can make one to the: Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9 or a charity of your choice.

The exhibit explores a number of areas of interest including key historic events preceding the CRT; the varied geography of the upper Columbia that attracted those in search of water storage; the key players who made the CRT decisions; the power struggle between B.C. and the Federal Government on the merits of the Treaty; how major decisions were made prior to public consultation; identification and measurement of gains and losses in the First Era of construction; and finally, trans-boundary river cooperation to the present day.

Funding for Roll On Columbia was provided by the Columbia Basin Trust. The travelling history exhibit was researched and curated

by Eileen Delehanty Pearkes an author and public speaker who specializes in the indigenous and natural history of the Kootenays.

Eileen will be at the Cranbrook History Centre on Saturday, July 25th at 1:00pm for a public speaking engagement and to discuss the important topics that this exhibit brings up.
