‘Is Whalley the best name?

Probably not. But it’s our name.’

I

t’s safe to assume bootlegger Arthur Whalley didn’t know residents would be so passionate about honouring his name decades later.

But they are.

Locals are celebrating after the city installed street signs, giving Whalley’s Corner around 108th Avenue and King George Boulevard historical designation, after they lobbied for it.

“Getting this historical district is a huge win for the community. And if the city really thinks about it, it’s a huge win for the city because now we’re closer.

And isn’t that what it’s all about?” said Pete Nichols, owner of Whalley Printers and a member of the Whalley Community Improvement Association that formed to ensure the area is not left behind.

“After all we’ve been through, we’re here, we’re proud of who we are and we’re not going anywhere.”

tire swing hanging from a branch of a perfectfor-climbing old tree in the middle of a field in Whalley is straight out of any young adventurer’s dream.

In front of it sits a colourful playhouse covered in small painted handprints left by those happily running around it.

Dozens of children are in the fenced field, some sitting down eating lunch, others chasing a friend, some hanging off the playhouse.

It’s what you’d expect a summer camp to look like.

But this isn’t your typical summer camp.

Based out of and run by Surrey Urban Mission Society (SUMS), children get the full camp experience – from trips to the beach to making all kinds of crafts.

What’s different is that the kids usually come from families that couldn’t otherwise afford to send them to camp.

The mission asks for $50 a week, but no one will ever be turned away if they can’t pay, said director Jonquil Hallgate.

Running a little-to-no-cost camp isn’t easy, she explains.

That’s why on this day, Hallgate couldn’t stop smiling.

Bruce Kehler, CEO of Canex Building Supplies, donated $25,000 to make the camp happen this year.

It was with tears that Kehler told 70-odd children why he wanted to support the camp.

10 YEARS AGO, JULY 16, 2005, IN THE PAGES OF THE NOW: ❚ Surrey RCMP constables Nathan Menard and Shane Parsons camped for 28 hours in the crow’s nest of the world’s tallest freestanding flagpole at Flag Chev Olds in Guildford to raise money for children with cancer.

“My memories of my time at Camp Homewood (in Campbell River), it all flashes back as I look around the room.

I believe my memories carried with me for 40 or 50 years and I trust each and every one of you children, that what you will experience at the summer camp this year will never be forgotten and I trust that it will help you step off the foundation to a much bigger, brighter, better future.”

The mission’s programming is reaching farther than the camp-goers. The volunteers are finding their lives enriched as well.

Simren Boyal chuckled as

he said his mom forced him to volunteer at the summer camp for one week five years ago. That one week turned into the whole summer as he fell in love with the work.

And he’s been a regular volunteer since.

“Me, as a kid, I got everything I wanted almost. For these kids, it’s not the same thing. Just seeing a smile on their faces, that’s the rewarding part. There’s a reason many of us come back for four or five years.”

Boyal noted SUMS’ daycamp is inclusive – not only based on income, but also to disabilities.

This year’s camp includes one boy who is autistic and another who has a developmental disability.

When they say anyone who walks through the door is welcome, they mean it.

“Our camp motto is just find a way,” said Boyal. “We don’t always have the greatest supplies, and those sorts of things, but it’s all about finding a way.”

Before his time volunteering as a camp leader, Boyal said he was the kid on his PlayStation2.

Now, he gets involved in his community.

“I think it’s pushed me to be a better person.”

Another day camp leader, Jagroop Kang, echoed that.

“When I first came to the mission, I didn’t really know that much about all the poverty in Surrey. It was a huge eye opener,” he said.

“The mission has shown me a whole new world.”

SUMS expects more than 100 children to take part in the camp throughout the summer.

❚ The expansion of Surrey Memorial Hospital’s crowded emergency room began, featuring a 16-bed minor injury unit. The 4,000-square-foot, $4-million unit would be built slightly behind the existing ER, bringing its total area to 20,000 square feet.

Waking up Whalley’s Corner: Part 1 Special series

Staying Whalley Honouring the roots of their beloved but embattled neighbourhood, locals celebrate a win after fighting for historical designation Story and photo by Amy Reid EDITOR’S NOTE: In our special series we call Waking up Whalley’s Corner, we will share stories of Whalley’s Corner, the area around 108th Avenue and King George Boulevard. We will delve into its struggles, its triumphs and what lies ahead.

Put simply, they’re proud of their roots, and it wasn’t long ago many felt that the city and developers were trying to get rid of the name Whalley.

Nichols spoke out in 2009 after the city considered changing Whalley Ring Roads to City Centre Ring Roads.

He saw it as the first step ete Nichols smiles in getting rid of the Whalley as he gazes across name and any negativity the street from his attached to it, as the city business at the RCMP pushed forward with City District 1 office in Whalley.

But left behind isn’t what they want to be either, and that’s the general feeling from many businesses in the area as they’ve watched development boom south of 104th, but remain stagnant north of it, he said.

The perception of being ignored is what spurred the community to band together about two years ago to form the Whalley Community Improvement Association.

They aim to shine light on an area that feels forgotten.

They meet once a month to talk about things like safety, transit and more in an effort to make positive change.

“Nobody has grasped the importance of Whalley’s Corner,” said Nichols. “This is the gateway to Surrey and it’s become an even more predominant gateway since they put in the toll bridge.

“We want more involvement of what goes on in our area. We’re proud of the Whalley Ball Park.

We’re proud of being able to be in business, with all the bad things that have happened in this area….

When you think about it, it would’ve been easier for us to move into a nicer area.

It probably would’ve been more economical for us. But we’re proud of this area and we want that show of pride to continue. So signs? It’s a great deal. Is Whalley the best name? Probably not. But it’s our name.”

While celebrating a win, the group is up against other issues that have plagued the area for decades.

At its most recent meeting, developer Charan Sethi with Tien Sher Group expressed frustration after one of his employees was threatened with a knife. Nichols said street people congregating and drinking is not being dealt with. Jonquil Hallgate with Surrey Urban Mission said the building has been broken into eight times in the last seven weeks.

Despite the issues, they vow to stay and push forward together.

Bootlegger Arthur Whalley moved to the area in 1925

P

eople began settling in Whalley as early as the

1880s.

The municipal council in 1908 requested a grant to build a road from Fraser Bridge to present day 108th Avenue.

The road cut off a portion of Old Yale Road known as “Snake Hill” because of its steep, dangerous curves. The route later became part of King George Highway.

In 1925, Arthur Whalley, a bootlegger, moved his family from Cloverdale to a threeacre triangle of land at the future intersection of Ferguson Road (108th Avenue), Grosvenor Road and the King George Highway.

After clearing the land and spending their first winter in tents, they built a service station, which included a general store, soft drink stand and tourist cabins.

Whalley had a shack closer to Cloverdale but had to move it further away to avoid being raided by the police stationed in the rodeo town. The added distance, as the story goes, bought him more time to hide his stuff from police.

When Pacific Stage Lines established a bus stop at Ferguson and Bergstrom Roads, the place became known as “Whalley’s Corner.” The area was officially named Whalley in 1948 after the board of trade held a contest to rename what had become known as “Whalley’s Corner.”

The name beat out “Binnieville,” which had been recommended in honour of Tom Binnie, a local real estate and insurance broker who had fostered Whalley’s growth as a commercial centre.

Surrey lost one of its residents, 42-year-old Colin Hill of Cloverdale, to such a crime this past Sunday.

He was a husband and a father to two children.

If the man police arrested this week for Hill’s murder is indeed guilty, and if as police say he tried to break into an apartment in Burnaby a couple of hours after Hill was killed – clearly indicating he is bereft of remorse for this sick crime – 25 years in prison will not be good enough for this guy.

Hopefully the judge assigned to this case will not only throw the book at him but the entire library, regardless of what sad life his defence lawyer will undoubtedly tell the court his client has thus far led.

The creep who killed Mr. Hill didn’t just cross a line. He leapt over it.

It got me thinking how impatient people are these days and how truncated our attention spans have SoLetItBeDone become. Particularly in this case, Tom Zytaruk seeing as watching a football game is supposed to be fun, and therefore a pastime.

So let it be written...

The World Religions consider patience to be one of the greatest

virtues. How many of us have seen a colleague or friend completely flip out on a computer? How many of us have witnessed road rage?

Seen somebody freak out on a waitress or cashier?

A study involving millions of Internet users (Video Stream Quality Impacts Viewer Behaviour,

by Krishnan and Sitaraman, ACM Internet Measurement Conference, Nov. 2012) revealed that people lose their patience in as little as two seconds while waiting for their online video to play.

The study also revealed that those who ‘enjoy’ faster Internet connections are less patient than people who have slower Internet connections.

If we keep going on like this, one can only imagine how frustrating life will be in future, when the people of tomorrow, operating at the pace of hummingbirds, look back on us as though we were

starfish.

Of course, you don’t want to be patient to the point of stagnation or where you fail to act when it’s prudent to do so. Some might call that sloth.

But studies show impatience leads to frustration, anger, irritability, stress, anxiety, vexation, restlessness, and is ultimately bad for your heart.

It’s not always easy to patient.

But who can deny that it has its perks?

Had those football fans stuck it out just a little while longer, they would have enjoyed some great action. Alas, they did not, and so, did not.

I think Aristotle put it best when he said, “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.”

So be patient, grasshopper, all in good time.

Fire TransLink board The Editor, Re: “We said ‘No.’ Now what?” the Now, July 9.

I was delighted with the result – the ‘No’ vote was larger than I expected. It is apparent that the general public is more intelligent than our civic politicians and the board of TransLink.

What needs to happen now – and, of course, it will not – is that the TransLink board be fired and the politicians told to stick to politics.

A new board should be appointed with appropriate qualifications and the public kept fully in the picture as to what is happening.

I realize I am writing about ‘pie in the sky,’ but then such is so typical of Canadian politics.

Wrong site for truck stop The Editor, Re: “Commercial truck rest stop coming to Delta,” the Now, July 9.

Truckers do need a place to rest when they’re on the road, but the proposed site at Nordel Way and Highway 91 is the wrong place for this.

The intersection is already heavily congested during rush hours with traffic heading to the bridge. Having trucks trying to get in and out of this truck park and join the queue for either the Alex Fraser Bridge or the weigh scales is just going to add to the congestion.

There is already a truck pull-out south of 64th Avenue on Highway 91. It would make more sense to expand that than create this new space.

❚ Last week I was horrified to see our little stone garden statue missing. I took a double look around the garden to see if it was around – it wasn’t. We’ve had it for many years and I wasn’t sure how to tell my wife it was stolen. I decided to wait until I arrived home.

The Editor, I read with interest a recent article in the newspaper about the need to conserve water and the implementation of water restrictions.

This includes the City of Surrey. I suggest most people would find the need to conserve water a matter of responsible civic duty and responsible environmental practice with a view toward the future. Clearly there is not an endless supply of fresh water.

Many Surrey councillors advocate responsibility in one form or another on the City of Surrey website. However, when I think about responsible water conservation, I am puzzled as to why the City of Surrey allows and approves the building of multiple condos and townhouses.

A person need only travel short distances in and around South Surrey to observe the overwhelming construction and completion of numerous condos and townhouses. I would not be surprised to learn the number of new units in the last five years is well into the thousands. Some of the condo and townhouse complexes now sit on land where there used to be one or two houses, but now there are multiunit structures. Many large-lot properties in South Surrey currently have sold signs and property development signs indicating more condo and townhouse units are to come.

I don’t think you need to be an expert in water consumption to figure out that the addition of thousands of toilets, dishwashers, washers and people showering will lead to more water consumption than that of the previous one- or two-family house on the site.

I would like to see Mayor Linda Hepner go on record and state unequivocally that prior to allowing the addition of thousands of new condos and townhouses, a water study was conducted by the city that supports the addition of thousands of new units.

Further, can the mayor please assure all of us good citizens of Surrey that we will, in fact, never run out of water due to the local widespread and mass construction of condos and townhouses. I request these statements from our mayor because it appears as though

DELTA — Delta Police Constable Jordan MacWilliams will not be tried for second-degree murder.

The Criminal Justice Branch stayed the charge. “Based on a careful review of the case, CJB has determined that the available evidence no longer satisfies its charge approval standard for the continued prosecution of Constable MacWilliams for any criminal offence,” said Neil MacKenzie, CJB spokesman.

MacWilliams was a member of the Emergency Response Team responding to an incident at the Starlight Casino on Nov. 8, 2012.

He shot an armed suspect, Mehrdad Bayrami of Richmond, who later died in OF hospital.

Ashton noted that roughly two hours after Hill was shot Burnaby RCMP arrested a gunman who was allegedly trying to break into an apartment in the 7300-block of Macpherson Avenue.

Ashton said the suspect in the Surrey shooting had taken off in a stolen vehicle and that his description and that of the stolen vehicle matched that of Burnaby’s suspect and his vehicle.

“Surrey RCMP moved quickly to get information out to all Lower Mainland police departments,” Ashton noted. “As a result, Burnaby officers have the information they required in order to execute an arrest and keep the public safe from further harm by this individual.”

Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner stated, “There are no words to express my outrage for this OF FE OF senseless loss of life.”

Suspect sought in sex assault

Killer knew what she was doing, Crown says

SURREY — Police are looking for the public’s help in a sexual assault investigation in Newton.

A woman flagged down a Surrey Mountie on July 7, shortly after 1 a.m., and told him she’d just been sexually assaulted in the 6600block of 140th Street.

The suspect is described as white, in his mid-30s, with a large build, bald head, mustache and possibly a goatee.

He was wearing khaki cargo shorts, a colourful T-shirt and is believed to be deaf and mute.

He was driving a four-door brown or beige sedan with a blue and white license plate BWXM606 of unknown origin and police believe he may be targeting prostitutes.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said anyone with information can call the Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502 and quote file number 2015-96174.

NEW WESTMINSTER — A Surrey woman who stabbed her mother 24 times knew it was morally and legally wrong and should be found criminally responsible despite her mental illness.

That’s what Crown prosecutor Craig Yamashiro argued in his final submissions Tuesday, in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.

Gloria Zerbinos, 30, is being tried for second-degree murder in the Nov. 8, 2012 death of her 43year-old mother Panagiota “Yota” Zerbinos.

“She knew it was wrong to kill her mom,” Yamashiro told Justice Fritz Verhoeven. “She attempted to conceal what she had done. She did know it was morally wrong and she acted despite it.”

The victim’s body was found lying on the living room floor of her daughter’s basement suite in Fleetwood with a kitchen knife stuck in her chest.

Justice Fritz Verhoeven heard she was stabbed 24 times and had been afraid to be alone with her daughter in the months leading up to her death.

testimony that the accused had assaulted her mother on more than one occasion before the homicide.

Yamashiro noted a pathologist found Zerbinos stabbed her mom with the force of “pounding a nail into hard wood.”

Zerbinos was arrested in Vancouver on Nov. 10, 2012, inside a Vancouver strip club called No. 5 Orange, where she’d worked as a dancer about a year and a half earlier under her stage name, “Naudia Nice.”

Zerbinos’ lawyer John Gustafson argued she should be found not criminally responsible because she is mentally ill.

Psychiatrist Todd Tomita diagnosed Zerbinos with Mixed Personality Disorder, with histrionic and antisocial traits.

But Yamashiro argued she knew well what she was doing.

“There is no reliable evidence her psychosis was active and present during the predicate offence,” he said.

At times Zerbinos rocked from side to side in the witness box.

She did not testify.

The judge will reveal his decision on whether Zerbinos will be found criminally responsible next Thursday, July 23. tom.zytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

KPU spikes varsity athletics NEWTON — Student athletes at Kwantlen Polytechnic University will have only one more season to play for KPU due to budget constraints.

The school announced on July 8 it would be ending its varsity athletics program. Following discussions with regional sport authority PACWEST, the school determined they could keep running its soccer, golf, basketball and badminton programs through the 2015/16 season.

KPU’s athletes say they are frustrated, as there had been no consultation or advance notice.

“The entire team was absolutely devastated when we heard the news” said Jessica Anderegg, co-captain of the Eagles women’s soccer team.

The student athletes say they

will be reaching out to KPU in the coming days to seek solutions to continue Kwantlen’s athletics program.

Jane Fee, vice provost of students at KPU, clarified that the annual cost of $750,000 to run the program is not being cut from the school’s budget, but rather repurposed in an effort to benefit a broader sporting community at the school.

“We are realigning that funding into programming that will better support the health and wellness of all of our student body,” Fee told the Now. “After looking at what it would cost us to stay in the varsity athletics game and in fact move up... we realized that that was going to be a very major investment of both operating

and capital funding to get us there. And it would mean that our investment in this area would focus on a very small number of students at one of our campuses.”

Fee said the university is considering other options such as participating in Metro teams or intramurals and providing other kinds of sports and physical recreation.

Over the next few months, the university will host town hall meetings on all four of its campuses to engage students in a broader dialogue about the future direction of health, wellness and recreation programming.

From a concept to make The Grove – a small stand of large trees adjacent to Newton wave pool – a safer and usable community space, the Friends have worked tirelessly and without government funding to improve and protect the area. Concerts, painting days and poets have all been part of The Grove’s development. There is now a piano for anyone to play – please help keep it safe and sheltered.

Parm’s “Room to Draw” community drawing program is attracting new neighbours. You don’t need to be an artist to participate. The next gathering is July 18.

Surrey has a policy to help expand the “creative economies.”

They could learn a lot from the Friends of the Grove. This grassroots group has promoted and encouraged local talents, and has helped enormously in making Newton a great neighborhood. Of course, there is still work to be done. One person can make a difference.

Ryan Roth of Silber Pro Cycling won the event for the second year in a row, completing the 48-kilometre, 40-lap race in one hour, two minutes and 48 seconds. In the women’s race, Vancouver’s Denise Ramsden, a Trek Red Truck p/b Mosaic Homes rider, won the fifth edition of the race, finishing the 30-lap, 36-kilometre circuit in 55 minutes and 30 seconds.
