If the flames draw near…

Fire chief authorized to fight city-threatening wildfires ARNE PETRYSHEN

The dry conditions and extreme fire danger rating mean that a fire that starts outside of city limits could quickly become a danger to Cranbrook. Fire Chief Wayne Price wrote to council that significant wildfire deployment in the area has reduced available wildfire suppression staff, delaying or limiting responses. At Monday’s meeting, a Memorandum put forward by Price and signed by Mayor Lee Pratt on July 7. “Basically what it is, is because of the extreme fire hazard rating in and around the City of Cranbrook, the fire chief just wants to be able to tell our fire department if need be, that they can attend a fire if it’s endangering the city although it might be out of city limits — out of our jurisdiction,” Pratt said.

Road Load of Goats

Conrad Lindblom (pictured in the far distance on horseback) follows his herd of goats down a backroad on Aq’am (St. Mary’s Band) lands. The goats are on the front lines in the fight against invasive weeds, and are particularly effective in this case in chowing down on sulphur cinquefoil. Keep it up, team! Cailey Chase photo

The Kimberley RCMP is gearing up the very busy, but fun, Julyfest weekend. Traditionally even though Julyfest sees a large influx of people in town for the weekend police say participants for the most part are well behaved and are out for the fun. The Kimberley Detachment brings in extra officers in for the weekend to maintain a strong visual presence and deal with issues before they get out of control. In addition Southeast District Traffic Services will be conducting road checks and roving patrols throughout the weekend. General Duty officers will be doing foot and bike patrols in and around the venue.
