Business owner ‘angry’ about tent city

A couple that owns a pool and spa company say the growing homeless camp is crippling their business.

Joanne Pinkney and Ben Testini may be in their 70s, but they’re not about to let a homeless encampment run them and their business off of Cliff Avenue.

For more than two months, close to 100 homeless people have resided in a makeshift tent city along Cliff Avenue, just south of Lougheed Highway and near Maple Ridge’s downtown core.

The camp is situated right next to Maple Ridge Pool and Spa Center, a business at 22191 Cliff Ave., that’s owned and operated by Testini, 77, and Pinkney, 73.

Instead of walking away from their business – that has seen a more than 50 per cent drop in sales since 2004 – they are holding firm, and hosting a customer appreciation sale July 15 to 19.

Pinkney blames the drop in business on the crime and homelessness in the neighbourhood behind the Salvation Army Caring Place building.

The couple bought the property on Cliff Avenue in 1993 and the building in which their business is located was built in ’96.

They opened Catalina Pool & Spa (its original incarnation) the next year, then sold the business in the fall of 2003.

Around that time, the business was generating roughly $1.2 million per year in revenue, including $650,000 from in-store sales, Pinkney estimated.

According to Pinkney, when the “tenant absconded, leaving us with months of uncollected rent,” she and Testini re-opened the pool and spa business that they established in the mid-1990s and sold to the previous tenant, and their struggles continue to today.

“I figure that we’re down about 50 per cent of what we should be,” she added.

Pinkney said she and Testini have little choice but to forge on.

“We have to,” Pinkney said. “We own the building, we need a mortgage, so we have to work. We’re working seven days a week… and we’ve got one employee besides ourselves to try and make things go.”

The issue of homelessness near the Caring Place is nothing new to Testini and Pinkney.

In an April 22 letter addressed to Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read, Pinkney wrote “for 13 years now, we have been writing letter after letter and making phone calls one after another making pleas to the mayor’s office to do something to stop the deterioration of our neighbourhood, which began with the construction of the

Salvation Army’s Caring Place.”

In the letter, Pinkney wrote that if you peer into the tents, “you might get a glimpse of the prostitution. And you might have front row seats to the daily fights and profanity.”

The couple is unable to escape the cacophony of sound often associated with the camp, because they live above their business.

“We live upstairs,” Pinkney told the TIMES during an interview at the store.

“Not only do we get the whammy here, we’ve got it upstairs too. Some nights it’s pretty wicked.”

They have witnessed fights, verbal as well as physical, as well as open alcohol and drug use. “I seen a drug deal, no two ways about it,” Pinkney said, feeling “the bylaws and police turn a blind eye to what’s going on outside.”

So how does Pinkney see this ending?

“I don’t know, maybe a lawsuit because I feel that my rights and freedoms have been breached,” she said.

“I feel that there’s double standards.

They [the local homeless] can do whatever they please, here, without any interruptions.”

The situation is taking a toll on Testini’s health.

He’s suffering from severe stress and often has trouble sleeping.

“I’m telling you, I’m angry, very angry over the whole situation,” Pinkney said.

The couple are part of a growing number of residents putting pressure on the City of Maple Ridge and provincial government to take action.

ducks can make their way down the Alouette River at Maple Ridge Park during the annual Rotary Duck Race, a host of volunteers and members from both local Rotary Clubs, work diligently behind the scenes to ensure everything is in order for the ducks to take the plunge.

One of these people is Irena Shantz, wife of Papa Duck Bob Shantz.

“It’s all for the good of the community,” Irena said.

“That’s what keeps us doing it.”

She’s quick to point out though, it’s much more than her and Bob making it happen.

“It takes a lot of people to put this together, and this year we’ve had more people come forward and help, which has been great.”

Event planning starts before Christmas, she noted.

“Planning for the Duck Race begins in late November,” Irena said. “It starts with securing a grand prize from our friend Ian Speckman at

Actual race day planning begins between March and April with the obtaining of a partner sponsor.

Other pre-planning includes reserving the park – which happens in March – and lining up the day’s food options and entertainment in April.

This year, she added, there will be more happening at the park than in previous years, throughout the course of this

year’s race day.

In previous years, “we’ve kind of catered to the younger kids,” she explained. “This year we’re catering more to all age groups. It’s going to be a great day down at the park.”

The day’s events kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 5 p.m., with the actual duck race scheduled to take place at 1 p.m.

“Norden the Magician is going to perform right after the race, and we’ve got entertainment all day; live bands and solo performers.”

Views change on pot

I

f the voters of British Columbia had their way, marijuana would already be legal or decriminalized.

At least, that’s the results of a new Insights West poll. It showed that 67 per cent of British Columbians support ending the criminalization of cannabis. A full 38 per cent want legalization, 24 per cent want decriminalization, and 27 per cent favour only medical use.

Just seven per cent want the use of pot banned completely.

The laws on pot have been out of date more or less since it was criminalized early in the 20th century.

Let’s be clear – pot isn’t actually good for you, and smoking it definitely isn’t. Driving while stoned is dangerous, too.

But our society already balances many good-vs-ill conflicts. Tobacco isn’t good for you either, nor is alcohol, but we regulate rather than ban those substances because the social cost is easier to bear when they are legal.

Prohibit a substance that many people want and you get crime, usually violent organized crime. We’ve seen that with alcohol in the past, but today, the owners of brew pubs and liquor stores fight for customers with advertising, not with bullets in the streets. We’re all better off for taking alcohol out of the hands of gangsters.

That seems to be what many West Coasters think when it comes to pot, too. Most expect a decline in gang violence tied to the drug trade.

The same poll shows they’re sceptical of claims by Conservative politicians that legalization would lead to teens having more access to pot. We hate to break it to Health Minister Rona Ambrose, but putting marijuana behind the counter of a liquor store would likely make it harder for many teens to access, not easier.

If the government does legalize marijuana, that doesn’t mean they should encourage its use – in fact, a strategy of taxes, education, and fact-based advertising is likely the best policy. We’ve seen smoking rates plummet, and we’ve seen drunk driving rates fall, so why not try that strategy with pot?

good reason: behind the wheel of a car, cellphones kill people.

Once again, it’s not the driver’s fault.

Certain kinds of microwave radiation have been shown to cause intelligence deficits in rats.

Since I would never argue that drivers who use cellphones are better than rats, those drivers could excuse themselves from the death and destruction they cause by placing the blame where it really belongs: on their cellphone.

That’s why it was necessary, despite the fact there were already laws against distracted driving, to specify cellphone bans for drivers.

Since the cellphone couldn’t be charged with the death of another human being, we can now charge a driver with using the cellphone that kills someone.

And that’s no small thing.

The likelihood of causing an accident while talking on a cellphone is just about exactly the same as when driving while legally impaired by alcohol or drugs.

And the probability that the accident

will involve a death is four times greater if you crash into another car – or a kid in a playground zone – while your cellphone is in your hand.

(Actually, those odds remain the same if you are using a hands-free device, but they remain legal because our politicians appear to have been dosing themselves with too many cellphone microwaves to understand what that means.)

So now we get back to smoking cigarettes while driving.

Smoking cigarettes while driving is known to cause accidents, not just roadside fires.

And while a smoking driver can be charged with distracted driving, it tends not to happen much, unless a cigarette can be definitively shown to be the culprit.

So it’s long past time we specify – as we did with cellphones – that it’s illegal to smoke cigarettes that cause accidents and fires.

Letters New residents grateful for outing Dear Editor, Thank you again for the wonderful night out.

We just moved [here three months ago] and are finally starting to feel more settled in. So we entered this [TIMES’ Picnic in the Park] contest for a nice family night out of the house.

We attempted an outdoor movie downtown last summer.

However, it was so packed, even though we got there early – and because you had to be there so early – Brody fell asleep as soon as the movie began.

We figured this was a much more pleasant way to attempt an outdoor show.

People did give us some strange looks about the caution tape [which roped off their VIP seating area – part of the prize]. I think they must have thought we did that ourselves, haha!

small, but Brody got a new toy out of it from a new comic store that is open, and I bought a couple beautiful necklaces from one of the vendors.

We lasted until about 10:30 p.m., when Brody was falling asleep.

His friend and his mom joined us, as well.

However, they were able to make it through the whole movie.

Others care Dear Editor, Letter writer [and federal NDP candidate in this riding] Bob D’Eith appears to believe that the Cliff Avenue tent city, and homelessness in general, are problems that can be solved by governments just spending more taxpayers’ money [Tent city a result of cuts, July 9 Letter, TIMES].

That, of course, is the NDP solution to many complex problems.

Although it is generally recognized that housing is a provincial government responsibility, Mr. D’Eith appears to be unaware of the significant role that the federal government has played, and continues to play, in affordable housing.

Frankly, I’m tired of the NDP’s hackneyed attempts to perpetuate the myth that they’re the only party that cares about people.

Summer brings winter from Shakespeare This year’s Bard on the Bandstand is filled with tragedy, comedy, fantasy and one truly fierce bear.

The Winter’s Tale is a classic Shakespearean tale of love, loss, and redemption.

It holds all the elements to capture an audience’s attention, including a really fierce looking bear puppet, according to actor Linda MacLean.

MacLean, a Pitt Meadows resident, has been part of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society for about six years and took on her biggest challenge this year– that of being co-producer of the Shakepearean play, as well as playing a pivotal role in it.

She plays Paulina, a strong woman willing to stand up to the king, able to withstand losing her husband to a bear, and a carrier of unshakable faith.

“It’s probably the most interesting female character in Shakespeare,” MacLean said. “She has a voice that’s strong enough to confront the king. It’s a pretty meaty character.”

While MacLean embraced her character, she also, by a strange turn, made (with

“He does look a little scary even though he’s a big puppet,” she said. “We have no business having a bear that looks like that because we had no idea what we were doing. We had so much fun on just that one aspect.”

Much of the play’s success will come from others like Linda who have jumped in and taken things on to make it all come together, said director Cathie Young.

“It’s been great working with the whole cast,” Young added. “It’s a huge commitment by all these people to make this happen.”

One of Young’s favourite plays, The

Winter’s Tale, moves from tragedy into comedy, and family.

“With a magical ending. We’ve pitched it as a fairy tale for a summer’s eve,” she said.

Kids are in the show in addition to the adult thespians, taking on roles as musicians and castle guards.

“There is always the involvement of everyone who comes out,” said Young.

“There is this big myth that Shakespeare is difficult.”

“We also have a deaf actor,” she added.

“It’s beautiful actually to watch the language in sign.”

Young describes her job as a privilege.

“The Winter’s Tale is one of my favourites, it’s kind of a family show in a way, it’s all about family,” she said.

With the show opening tonight (July 16) in Pitt Meadows at Spirit Square, everyone involved is focused on bringing it together.

“The show does go on, no matter what,” said MacLean. “No matter how you feel the week before, it all comes together.”

The show runs July 16 to 18 at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows and July 23 to 25 on the bandstand in Maple Ridge’s Memorial Peace Park.

All shows start at 8 p.m. with pre-show entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Organizers suggest audience members bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on, as well as a donation to the Friends in Need Food Bank.

Bracelets aid domestic abuse fight Cythera Transition House benefits from the sale of Rakhi.

Working together with the City of Surrey, the City of Maple Ridge is participating in a campaign to help stop domestic abuse.

Rakhi bracelets have a longstanding tradition in India. Sisters tie bracelets on brothers’ wrists symbolizing love and respect.

Staff with the City of Maple Ridge embraced the program, which has run in Surrey for more than five years to bring aware-

ness to domestic violence.

Bracelets purchased from Surrey are on sale until Friday for $5, with $4 from each going to the programs and services of Cythera Transition House Society.

According to Roberta O’Brien, Cythera’s new coordinator of violence against women in relationships, the response has been positive for the program.

“I put it out through the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Katzie Community Network,” she said.

“Four or five agencies said they would sell them internally.”

O’Brien also contacted the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association and, “four businesses jumped on it right away.”

One of those businesses is

Crazy About Clothes on 228th Street.

O’Brien noted the purple bracelets are hand made by women in India as a way to help improve their financial conditions.

“Traditionally the bracelets were quite big and bulky... not practical,” noted O’Brien. “These are beautiful and much smaller.”

The size is beneficial as the Rakhi concept is that the bracelet is worn until it falls off.

Picnic promotes faith discussions A local committee invites the community to share thoughts and ideas about religious beliefs.

Formed close to two years ago, the Building Interfaith Bridges steering committee is hosting a picnic to invite others in the community to get to know the committee, what it does, and discuss various religions.

Ahmed A. Yousef, in We’re charge of public affairs for the committee, noted it’s inviting the first summer picnic the people to group has held.

“We are a committee of bring out individuals, representing ideas and different faiths from here in thoughts… Maple Ridge,” he said.

The picnic is a potluck, so Ahmed Yousef those attending are asked to bring a food dish to share, a plate and utensils, and most importantly a chair.

The event is at noon on Saturday,w July 18 at Haney Nokai Park at 222nd Street and Brown Avenue, just north of Dewdney Trunk Road.

“We’re inviting people to bring out ideas and thoughts,” Yousef said. “And introduce ourselves to the community.”

Throughout the year, the committee organizes events to promote the discussion of different religious points of view. This includes talks held at the Maple Ridge library.

“This year, we’re doing something different,” he noted. “We’re having each faith being showcased or presented, then opening up to the audience for questions.”

The first talk is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept.

30. “We’re doing them every two weeks,” Yousef added.

Here are some safe driving tips for when you are heading out on the road this summer: Impaired driving Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death in Canada. In fact, the greatest numbers of alcohol-related crashes occur during the summer months (June, July, August.) And approximately one in three collisions involve alcohol and one in ten drivers after 10pm have consumed alcohol.

Driving Fatigue Canadians often travel tremendous distance when they go on vacations. This creates a temptation to keep driving for extended periods even when tired. Fatigue is a form of impairment, so don’t give into the temptation to push on. If you feel fatigued, have a good sleep before you take the wheel. It might be better to delay your trip until the morning when you feel fresh and energized. Rest stops are important.

Car Mechanical Safety It is a good idea to check your vehicle’s fluid levels, tire inflation and lights when you stop at a service station for gas. A few minutes of checking can save you hours of costly repairs down the road.

In May, City council awarded the contract to King Hoe Excavating Ltd. to begin construction of the fourlane expansion of 128th Avenue Nicole Read from 210th to Mayor 216th Street This $8.2 million project is the first phase of a project that will see 128th Avenue and Abernethy Way expanded to four lanes, with storm water systems, streetlights, and turn lanes to allow better north south access.

“It’s hard to rotate [adult cats] between shelters because we all have the same issue,” Stack said.

With 50 per cent off the adoption fee, Stack hopes people will be more likely to consider an adult cat over a kitten.

The goal in Maple Ridge for the adult cat adoption event, presented by Hill’s Science Diet as part of its Food, Shelter, and Love partnership program with BC SPCA, is to find homes for all 18 adult cats currently at the shelter, including Booger and Sunny.

Hill’s is the main provider of food for the shelter animals and the company also gives sample packs of food to go home with adopters for their new best friend.

Stack noted keeping animals on the same food after they leave the shelter helps limit any concerns with stomach upset due to the stress of a new environment. It’s one less thing that changes and keeps gastrointestinal issues to a minimum.

For anyone considering adopting the “purrfect” new companion, the event starting tomorrow (July 17) at B.C.’s SPCA branches is the ideal opportunity to make a match.

All of the cats looking for love have been spayed or neutered and vet-checked to ensure they are ready for their new home.

Adult cats also tend to be calmer than their kitten counterparts and the fact that they are litter box trained is a plus for most adopters.

KATIE’S PLACE CARLOS has been featured here before. He came to us from another shelter where no one expressed any interest in him. It seems that the same is true at Katie’s Place.

Carlos is a plain black cat who is now about 14 years old. When Carlos came to us he had an ear infection, desperately needed grooming, was underweight and anemic.

This poor guy has obviously been through his share of troubles. Life has not been kind to this old boy.

Carlos is not a demanding cat. A sunny windowsill, a comfy chair, a place where he can feel safe, and loved is all he needs. He shouldn’t spend his final years in a shelter, he deserves better.

JOEY moved into a new apartment with his owner who unfortunately died shortly after. He was so traumatized he hid in the mattress.

When we went to get him it was like trying to catch a wild animal.

He was completely untouchable.

When we finally got him, he went to another shelter where he did not improve, and ended up with us.

For the first little while he was shy and withdrawn. Then almost overnight he turned into a loving, sweet, cuddly boy. It is hard to believe this is the same cat. His transformation has been beyond amazing. Joey is only about 2 years old and will make a wonderful companion.

KEATS grew up on the streets and comes across as a tough guy who sometimes forgets he no longer has to fight to survive. Keats is about 5 years old (all of which he spent on the streets), likes to talk, loves humans but does not demand attention, and is pretty indifferent to the other cats in his pen. Keats is FIV positive. FIV can only be passed to other cats. He will need to be an only cat or share a home with another FIV positive feline. Keats will never get his kitten years back, but the tiny sparkle in his wise eyes tells us that in the right, loving home he will be able to get past all the bad stuff and enjoy his life to the fullest.

Last weekend, Ridge Meadows Burrards teams proved they are the Alpha dogs of B.C. girls lacrosse.

The Burrards were involved in three of four gold medal games to cap the 2014 Minor Box Lacrosse Provincial Championships in Port Coquitlam.

Japan takes top Maple Ridge native Larissa Franklin was part of Team Canada, which participated in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship at Softball City in Surrey this past weekend.

Team Canada posted a solid showing, winning a number of games, but in the end, it was Team Japan that walked away tournament champions in the final game on Monday evening.

Quantum’s Booth reflects on 25 years A Ridge business owner hands over the reins, and moves forward with a prestigious award.

She sold her business after 25 years at the helm this year, and last month, June Booth, former owner of Quantum Gymnastics in Maple Ridge, received a lifetime achievement award by Gymnastics Canada.

“I was very honoured to receive this,” she said.

For Booth, the award is much

It’s recognition of her contributions to the gymnastics commun-

ity and the sport itself.

And though gymnastics has been a life-long adventure for Booth, her tenure as owner of Quantum was first set in motion back in the mid-’80s.

“We had actually come to Maple Ridge during Expo ‘86,” she explained. “We liked the community, the size of it, and there was no gymnastics program here at the time. It just seemed like an ideal location, in an area we wanted to live in.”

The family made the move from Alberta, where Booth had been working as a coach, and where her children were already very active in the sport – including her son who was competing nationally and “doing quite well.”

There were challenges to be sure, when it came to getting the

business off the ground.

“It actually took me about a year-and-a-half to get zoning permission, and things like that, but we eventually got it open in the industrial park,” she recalled.

Now, a quarter-century later, the business continues to thrive.

‘We’ve had kids compete nationally, and internationally over the years, and we average about 1,300 to 1,400 kids a year who are members.”

Running a successful business such as Quantum has been “very rewarding,” Booth said.

“To see the number of young coaches coming through – as well as the number of competitive athletes and ex-coaches from Quantum that are still involved in the sport is just amazing.” continued on page A24…

“Old age,” the 68-year-old Booth laughed. “I was just ready and it was time. I have been limiting my coaching over the past few years, but staying busy with gymnastics outside the gym.”

Booth resolved that if someone wanting to buy the business came along, that would be great, which turned out to be what happened.

If the business had not been sold, Booth “likely would have been content to just manage it from a distance,” she elaborated. “Then I got the offer on it, and everything fell into place.”

Booth will remain connected to the club, and involved with the gymnastics community.

For Booth, the joy in Quantum has been “watching the kids do well, and the enjoyment of working with them.”

The sport has also been a major part of her family, and her children’s upbringing.

“My son was an acrobat with Cirque De Soleil, and is now a head coach for them. My daughter’s an international judge, and her and I have travelled all over the world together, and my husband – before he passed away – did all of our maintenance, and built the equipment.”

Going forward, Booth is optimistic she’s leaving Quantum in good hands.

She’s also looking forward to “getting done all the things I never seem to have time to do.”

Other activities keeping her busy are her involvement with Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind (“I’m currently training a guide puppy for them,” she said,) spending time with her granddaughter, and training learning facilitators to teach gymnastics courses.

And as for Quantum itself? “Hopefully, the gym will continue,” she said. “There’s a really good strong basis. It’s a great sport for anybody and a great foundation to build on.”
