Beekeeping generates a buzz in the community Local beekeepers hope to educate people about the growing industry

rban beekeeping (or notso-urban in Red Deer’s case) isn’t an altogether new topic but is quickly gaining momentum across the province as information and resources become more readily available.

The City of Red Deer currently doesn’t allow beekeeping in the City, but hives are permitted outside City limits. A short drive from her urban home takes beekeeper Carol Van de Weghe outside of town to her family’s farm where her hive of approximately 30,000 bees resides.

Van de Weghe said she feels if people were more educated about bees, then the hive-mentality of the City could change to a more positive perspective for the creatures.

“The awareness needs to be there - that you don’t have to be scared of bees. You can call people to get rid of bees safely – we will come to your house, and we will take your bees and we will put them in a little box and take care of them and love them. And then we’ll bring you honey next year,” she said with a laugh.

“The fear is my frustration – that’s why people don’t want bees in town. There is a major misconception about bees. They don’t want to sting you because they know they’ll die. If I were to attack the hive and knock it over, yes I’d probably get stung. I likely won’t if I’m just checking it out and maintaining it.”

Van de Weghe said she’s always had a love for bees and that has only intensified since she took on the role of ‘urban’ beekeeper.

“We’ve come into a society that is technological and this brings you back to nature. People are doing gardens, farmers’ markets are becoming much more popular, there are chickens in the city.

With those gardens and things, there are a lot of people who are realizing that it’s not too late to make an impact,” she said.

“A lot of us have young kids and we’re doing it for them and teaching them. I can’t necessarily make the world a better place for my kids by myself, but they’re young enough that they can take

in this information and use it when they grow up.”

Before simply wandering into a local forest and grabbing a hive from a tree there’s a lot of education that must take place.

Beekeeping varies from region to region, from Canada to Mexico to Italy and back. Van de Weghe follows many international beekeepers by using Instagram and she can track the methods and progressions of hives all over the world.

Several months prior to receiving her first live hive, Van de Weghe took an intensive course in Calgary offered by ABC Bees – Apiaries & Bees for Communities. She also recommended the group’s web site, www.backyardbees.ca, as a great resource for all levels of beekeepers but especially for beginners.

According to the Government of Alberta web site, the Alberta

Bee Act regulates beekeeping in Alberta and, “Anyone owning bees or used beekeeping equipment in Alberta or operating bees in Alberta is required to register annually with the Provincial Apiculturist.”

Calgary and Edmonton both have Urban Beekeeping Associations and guidelines for hobby beekeeping within City limits.

The course that Van de Weghe took is part of several programs offered by ABC that introduce people into the lifestyle.

“For those who want to become beekeepers - take the course.

Take the course by ABC Bees.

Read books and educate yourself for your region. Don’t just read random books because climates are different from Canada to Colorado to Mexico. People beekeep all over the world - it’s amazing the different skills people have and the variations in hives and

styles of care. You really have to educate yourself on your region,” she stated.

Van de Weghe met another beekeeper from the region, Ron Clowes, at the same course. Both are members of the Red Deer Beekeepers facebook group and are active in the buzzing community.

“Before you go out and just grab the bees, know what you’re doing. Last fall I started looking into this and I got bees this spring. There was an intensive two-day course we took and I really had to start reading because there is a lot to it,” he said.

As well, beekeepers need to pay attention to the diseases that bees can harbour and transfer to neighbouring hives.

With a mixture of commercial and hobby beekeepers in the region, a disease can transfer and damage other hives without proper care.

“You’ve got to know how to recognize and handle diseases, so they don’t kill the hive or affect neighbouring hives. You learn things like when to give the bees space so you don’t get swarmed.

You can’t just throw bees in a box and take their honey away, because they need the honey in the winter when they’re cold and need food,” said Clowes.

Van de Weghe added honey is a benefit, of course.

“You’re definitely going to get some that you can eat or sell. I like it for my kids. I have three kids and it’s a great way for them to learn. They come out with me sometimes and then tell their friends about bees. It’s fascinating to kind of go back to nature.

Red Deer RCMP focus on motorcycle safety This July, Red Deer RCMP and Community Peace Officers are focusing on motorcycle safety in the city; the campaign is part of a provincial initiative and will focus on safe driving practices for motorcyclists and those driving near them.

It’s vital to the safety of riders that they practice defensive driving, and it’s equally important that other drivers be aware of motorcyclists and give them the space they need.

On a motorcycle, a rider is vulnerable, and we all play a role in motorcycle safety.

Safety tips for motorcyclists including staying out of blind spots;

wearing a helmet that meets the requirement of Canada Standards Association and protective clothing is a must. Also, increase visibility to other drivers by wearing reflective or bright clothing; ride a motorcycle that’s the right size and weight for your strength and your abilities and a valid Class 6 operator’s licence is required to operate a motorcycle on public roadway.

Statistics from the Alberta Office of Traffic Safety indicate that over a five year period, 3,415 motorcycles were involved in casualty collisions.

These collisions resulted in 155 deaths and 3,548 injuries. Two-fifths

(41%) of motorcyclists involved in casualty collisions committed an improper action.

More than half (59.5%) of these errors were running off the road or following too closely. One-fifth (20.4%) of motorcyclists involved in casualty collisions were travelling at a speed too fast for the given conditions.

In fatal collisions, half (55.1%) of the riders were travelling at unsafe speeds. As well, nearly two-thirds (59.0%) of collisions involving a motorcycle resulted in death or injury.

This compares to approximately one in 10 (9.8%) for all collisions.

Deaths in City not suspicious Two unrelated deaths that occurred in Red Deer last Saturday have been deemed not suspicious.

On the morning of July 11th, members of the Red Deer City RCMP detachment and EMS were dispatched to a location within the City of Red Deer after receiving a report of an adult male lying on the ground.

Upon arrival at the scene near the 4300 block of 49th Ave., police located a 53 year-old male. EMS personnel examined him and confirmed that he was deceased.

Members of the RCMP Red Deer City detachment, Forensic Identification Services and RCMP Major Crimes Unit – South investigated the matter.

Police have identified the deceased and his next of kin have been notified.

The Medical Examiner determined the circumstances of the death were not suspicious or criminal in nature.

No further updates will be provided regarding this investigation.

As well, shortly before 4 p.m. on July 11th, Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of a deceased woman in a treed area north of 60th St. and 57th Ave. The death of the 32-yearold Red Deer woman is not considered suspicious, and is not related to the sudden death of the 53-year-old male.

RCMP will not be releasing the name of the deceased woman out of respect for the family’s privacy.

Lifestyle Westerner Days kicks off today

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Westerner Days, in its 124th year, began in Red Deer today and officials said there is much excitement in the community.

Westerner Days runs through until July 19th.

“Everything is in full swing,” said Meghan Gustum, marketing manager at Westerner Park.

“This time of year is always an exciting time of year. Westerner Days is a big event on everyone’s calendar. It’s really about bringing the community together and it’s an opportunity to celebrate and to enjoy each other together.

“It’s always a good time, it’s a lot of fun and it’s relaxed. We put on the big city event with the small town hospitality.”

This year’s theme plays on the agriculture aspect of Westerner Days.

Organizers are hoping people come out and ‘horse around’ on the midway, ‘pig out’ in the Grub Hub and ‘groove to the mooosic’ on the main stage.

“It’s all about having fun and being a little ‘punny’

with our campaign,” said Gustum.

This year’s midway includes 40 rides, provided by North American Midway, including 18 thrill rides, 13 family rides and nine kiddie rides.

There are a number of entertainers that will be featured on the main stage in the Centrium as well including Wide Mouth Mason and Big Sugar on July 15th, The Headpins and Platinum Blonde on July 16th, High Valley and The Road Hammers on July 17th, and The Boom Chucka Boys, Lindsay Ell and Kira Isabella on July 18th.

Concerts start at 8 p.m. with the doors opening at 7 p.m.

All concerts are free of charge with gate admission and seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“This year we are really excited because we have 10 acts over five nights on our main stage,” said Gustum.

“The public was telling us that they wanted free entertainment and this year we are really delivering.

There is also nightly entertainment in The Ranch which includes Steve Arsenault on July 15th, The Dungarees on July 16th, Dirt Road Angels on July 17th, and Randi Boulton on July 18th.

Another new aspect of this year’s Westerner Days will be a Morning of Faith on July 19th – a non-denominational service before the grounds open to the general public. The contemporary Christian band KUTLESS will perform at 3 p.m. in the Centrium.

“We will open the grounds at 9:30 a.m. for anyone wishing to attend the 10:30 a.m. service,” said Gustum. “We will not be charging admission at that point, however parking fees will still be in effect. “Guests would then be welcome to stay on the grounds and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at the fair.”

Those attending the service are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation for the Red Deer and District Food Bank with them.

Meanwhile, last year, 92,872 people attended Westerner Days, which was slightly down from the previous year. “We didn’t have great weather last year and we are definitely trying for higher attendance this year – we always try and hit that 100,000 mark.”

In addition, for many,

Westerner Days is an annual tradition, however, it is not on the event calendar for some Central Albertans due to illness.

Continuing the ‘Share the Fair’ program, Westerner Days offers the opportunity for sick kids to have the experience.

Various entertainers of this year’s event will visit the Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta and the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on July 16th to perform for patients and their families.

“It is at events like Westerner Days that childhood memories are created and last for years to come,” said Gustum. “We are pleased to offer a program that allows all kids, regardless if they can physically attend our event or not, the opportunity to create those same memories.”

As well, for many families, due to financial constraints, they are unable to attend the fair. In 2013, Westerner Park created the ‘We All Play’ program. The program provided 100 families with complimentary admission and parking to Westerner Days.

Passes were distributed through Family Services of Central Alberta to families who would otherwise not be able to attend.

Last year the program expanded, and families with Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre will also have the opportunity to take a much-needed break from the day-to-day demands of a child with special needs and play.

Parking rates increase in City’s downtown Parking rates in the City’s downtown have increased.

During the 2015 budget, City council approved an overall increase of approximately 15% to all City owned parking facilities, effective July 13th. This increase applies to all downtown on street parking, City owned parking lots, and Sorensen Station.

Parking at two hour restricted on street parking meters downtown will cost $1.30 per hour, an increase of 15 cents per hour.

Parking at two hour unrestricted on street parking meters outside of the downtown core will cost $1 per hour, an increase of 10 cents per hour. Parking at eight hour unrestricted parking meters will cost 80 cents per hour, an increase of 10 cents per hour.

New this year are 30 minute restricted parking meters at a cost of $1.50 per hour, located at 4900 block 48th Ave. (City Hall, court house). Four hour restricted meters are also being introduced at 90 cents per hour, located at 4700 Block 50th Ave. Rates will also increase for City owned

parking lots. Lot P4, beside the Welikoklad Event Centre (formerly City Centre Stage), and lot P5, beside Sorensen Station, will increase to $1.20 per hour. Lots P2, at 5100 50 Ave; P3, behind the River Valley apartments; and P6, the old Arlington Hotel location, will increase to $1 per hour. Lot P9, on the corner of 46th St. and 51st Ave., will decrease by 10 cents to 80 cents per hour.

Parking rates for the remaining lots in and around the downtown core will increase to 80 cents per hour.

All City owned parking lot rates are purposely lower than the adjacent on street rates, to encourage drivers to park off street and allow shorter term parkers to park on street. Sorensen Station monthly parking rates will increase from $94.50 to $110 per month. Daily parking rates will increase by 10 cents to $1 per hour.

Parking fees are in effect Monday to Friday between 9- 5 p.m. with free parking on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

OPINION Westerner Days officially kicks off in Red Deer The streets downtown were anticipated to be lined with Red Deerians this morning as they enjoyed the kick off to the Westerner Days Fair and Exposition.

The event is in its 124th year and that in itself is a true testament as to how much this annual tradition is enjoyed in the Central Alberta area.

More than 30,000 people were expected to enjoy a parade including marching bands, clowns, decorated cars and more.

It’s a great way to kick off the annual event every year.

And Red Deerians of all ages can be seen enjoying the many floats and entertainment that goes along with the parade.

Now, the midway at Westerner Park is in full swing and the sights and sounds of the fair can be heard from miles away.

It is always a great time of year and one that many locals look forward to.

Westerner Days, which runs through to July 19th, is not only a chance to kick back and enjoy time with family and friends, but

it’s also a chance for the community to celebrate and come together with a number of pancake breakfasts and chili cook-offs being held.

Many businesses also partake in the festivities and decorate their offices with western-themed décor to help get in the spirit of the annual events.

The City really does transform back into the western era for the week of the fair and it’s certainly Central Alberta’s biggest summer celebration.

The Westerner Days Fair and Exposition has something to offer for every age whether it is the rides, the food, the concerts and other entertainment or even the pony chuckwagon races and agriculture shows.

We can be sure there will be plenty of action, fun and thrills to dive into during this year’s events.

Westerner Days has an entertainment line up for all ages this year and some of the acts include Wide Mouth Mason, Big

Sugar, High Valley and The Road Hammers, among others. On the grounds spectators will also be able to see performances

by Spandy Andy, Bandaloni and the Bowmanville Zoo – Animal Acrobats, to name just a few.

As well, new this year is a Morning of Faith celebration, which will take place on July 19th.

A non-denominational service will begin the morning with the popular Christian band KUTLESS performing at 3 p.m. in the Centrium.

Guests are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation for the Red Deer and District Food Bank with them to the service.

It is a great addition to the five-day event and we are sure that it will be very well attended by various people and groups throughout the Central Alberta area.

For the Morning of Faith, parking fees will be in place, however, admission to the grounds will be free for the service and

participants are welcome to stay on site to enjoy the rest of the day at Westerner Park.

As well, one of the most popular fixtures at Westerner Days is the pony chuckwagon races. Crowds of more than 4,000 people gather nightly to take in this exciting event while 56 drivers from western Canada and the United States compete over the five days all vying for the coveted North American championship buckle and trophy.

In addition as for the rides, this year also looks to be an impressive year with attractions provided by North American Midway Entertainment.

A total of 40 rides will be featured, including 18 thrill rides, 13 family rides and nine kiddie rides.

So we encourage everyone to get out, have fun and enjoy all of what Westerner Days has to offer this year.

The fair gets bigger and better each year and we have no doubt that this will be one of the best yet.

Alberta is a wealthy province, but is it a happy one?

There are stereotypes about every province in Canada.

Some of these are bang on and even those that miss the mark are often all in good fun.

Not everyone in B.C. does yoga, not everyone in Quebec harvests maple syrup and not everyone in Alberta drives a truck, but these images have some truth to them.

Some stereotypes, however, are both inaccurate and unfair.

The image of Alberta as a place to make money and flee as soon as your bank account is full is a prime example. Albertans know there is a whole lot more to their province than its reputation in other parts of Canada as little more than a job factory.

Nonetheless, this stereotype raises a key question

Is Alberta a place where you can build a satisfying life surrounded by friendly people or is it closer to the soul-destroying wasteland of strip mines and glass office towers its critics depict it as?

With these questions in mind, ATB Financial conducted the ‘Alberta Happiness Survey’ to find out if Albertans are happy, what they feel is important to their happiness and if they see Alberta as a place where happiness

can flourish.

The news is good. Eight in 10 Albertans said they are, all things considered, either very happy or pretty happy.

And they said this during the dark days of February when every headline seemed to be announcing a drop in the price of oil or another round of job cuts.

This sounds like a positive result and it is.

After all, not everyone is going to be happy all of the time. The loss of a loved one, ill health, a period of depression, losing your job – there are lots of things that explain why a fifth of us say we are unhappy.

At the same time, there are lots of places where a larger proportion of people say they are happy.

In Denmark, it’s 97%; in Ireland it’s 94%; in the United States it’s 87%.

We don’t know why some places are happier than Alberta, but the international numbers suggest that there is room for improvement on this front in Wild Rose Country.

When we take a look at happiness in terms of life satisfaction, we find the same pattern: Alberta is ahead of some places but behind others.

About six in 10 Albertans (63%) gave their life satisfaction a rating of seven or higher out of 10. This is way ahead of Egypt (11%), Greece (37%) and Japan (43%) but well behind Mexico (79%) and Israel (75%).

As with happiness, it’s hard to say why life satisfaction is higher in some places, but the fact that it is suggests we can aim higher and look for ways to increase the percentage of Albertans who feel satis-

fied with their lives.

Two other findings from the survey show that Alberta is a happy place.

First, when we asked Albertans if they feel that the province is a great place in which to find happiness, 79% said yes.

This is a very encouraging finding and one of which Albertans should be proud. However, while you can’t please everybody, it should still raise an eyebrow that nine per cent of Albertans said no and 12% weren’t sure.

Second, over two-thirds of Albertans (68%) said they would like to live in Alberta for the rest of their lives.

Given the magnetic pull of warmer places and exotic locales, the desire to return home, and other reasons someone might want to leave Alberta (even

if they like it here just fine), this is a very positive finding. We are doing something right! Overall, the results suggest that people might come to Alberta for the jobs, but they often stay for the quality of life.

They also suggest that being a happy place is not a given and that there is work to do to increase happiness in the province.

Conducted by Vision Critical between Feb. 5th and 23rd, using a web panel, the ATB Financial Alberta Happiness Survey includes responses from a representative sample of 999 Albertans.

National anti-Harper campaign reaches Red Deer

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express With less than 100 days left until Canada’s next federal election, politicians are busy campaigning to ensure their party’s success, with some citizens launching political campaigns of their own.

Recently the City of Red Deer’s Public Works department has removed as many as 24 stickers from ‘Stop’ signs around the City over the last week, with the

stickers toting the word ‘HARPER’ underneath the word ‘STOP’. The stickers are part of a campaign aimed at Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“The City has been advised through a number of means such as public complaints and the ‘Report a Problem’ facet on our web site which allows residents to report graffiti and vandalism,” explained Greg Sikora, Public Works manager for the City. “They (residents) had identified

the issue of the stickers on the signs and in response we have mobilized forces through our routine maintenance to remove the stickers.

“This is just another sign of vandalism and we will maintain those signs just as if someone had vandalized them in any other way – vandalism is not appropriate.”

Although no resident of Red Deer has stepped forward to take claim over

what public works officials are calling vandalism, the stickers can be traced to the web site www.stopharperstickers.com.

The web site states the #StopHarper sticker campaign has reached 30 towns in six provinces in the first month of the campaign; with the site also stating the stickers are part of a ‘political art campaign’.

However, with neither the City nor the RCMP recognizing the signs as

‘political art’, officials from the local police detachment have stated defacing a traffic sign falls under the Criminal Code as mischief.

“Mischief charges under the Criminal Code of Canada fall into two categories, summary or indictable, depending on the type of property that has been damaged,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Shepherd, of the Red Deer RCMP. “In this case, vandalizing a ‘Stop’ sign would likely be a sum-

mary offence, which is punishable by up to six months in prison or a fine of up to $2,000.”

Meanwhile earlier this week, Colin Connon, assistant to local Conservative MP Earl Dreeshen, said Dreeshen will not be commenting on this issue.

Schreiner settling into new role as local MLA

said she is looking forward to making a difference and to meeting people in the community.

“I want to make sure that

anybody that wants to see me has an opportunity to see me. It doesn’t matter if it’s a constituent in my area or an organization, they’re all important. I want to make sure I make time for anyone who contacts my office because their issues are important,” she said.

“There is such a variety of people in Red Deer North

that I just want to make sure I get to meet with them all and listen to what their issues are and try and help them the best I can. If a person has a concern, it’s my concern.”

Since the election, Schreiner said she has hit the ground running.

curve. I’ve been in Edmonton a lot and we had quite an extensive orientation.

We had some business that was important that we wanted to attend to. We sat in the Legislature for a couple of weeks which was really great. I am glad we had the opportunity to do that before the fall so that we could get our feet wet and learn what it is all about.”

She added being in the Legislature for the first time was exciting.

“It was amazing. I found it an honour to be sitting with people like Rachel Notley and Brian Mason and David Eggen. I felt it such an honour to be sitting with them in the same room.”

Schreiner said to be part of such a historic time in Alberta has been exciting as well.

“I’m really happy to be part of that. I definitely could see that there was going to be a change but I don’t think people realized how much a wave it was going to be. I’m happy and honoured to be a part of it.”

As for issues she hopes to tackle, Schreiner said

homelessness in Red Deer is one of them. “I do see a theme of homelessness in Red Deer that I would really like to advocate for.”

Recently, the NDP passed a motion to increase the minimum wage in Alberta to $15 by 2018. This October, the minimum wage will increase by $1 to $11.20 an hour.

“Our government did promise to implement a fair minimum wage. The minimum wage in Alberta has fallen behind the earnings of Albertans in general. The Parkland Institute found that Alberta has the highest average weekly earnings of $29.24 an hour, yet the lowest general minimum wage of $10.20 an hour. We also have one of the highest levels of wage inequality in Canada,” said Schreiner. “We just want to start bridging that gap.

A higher minimum wage will make life better for all Albertans.”

Red Deerians urged to conserve water With low rainfall this summer, water conservation needs to be a priority for all Red Deer residents and businesses. Alberta Environment and Parks recently indicated that river flows are below average across a large portion of the Red Deer River watershed which could lead to a water shortage.

As a result, the City is issuing a number of tips to help residents conserve water.

“We’re not at a complete minimum but water levels are lower than we’ve seen,” said Alex Monkman, water superintendent with the City of Red Deer. “Especially when we have lower rainfall like this, we just need residents to be more aware of how much water they’re using. If you don’t need to water your lawn, then don’t.”

When it comes to conserving water, small changes can make a big impact:

• Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator rather than running water until it’s cold. This switch can save almost 10,000 L/person annually.

• Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water when washing dishes by hand. This can save 46,000 L/household annually.

• Check your toilets or faucets for leaks. Try putting several drops of food colouring in the toilet tank.

If, without flushing, the colour begins to appear in the toilet bowl within 30 minutes, a leak exists.

• Leave grass clippings on your lawn as they retain moisture, and water early in the morning to prevent evaporation in the afternoon.

• Don’t mow your lawn too frequently. Taller grass shades the soil, retaining moisture.

Business owners are encouraged to introduce low-

flow toilets, install aerators on faucets and ensure water conservation signage is in place in bathrooms and kitchens.

New program launched for homeless pets in City

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Last month Alberta Animal Services and the Red Deer Food Bank joined forces to become a part of the ‘Pets of the Homeless’ program.

The non-profit program is an ongoing North American effort to regularly supply donated pet food through food banks to local people who cannot afford to properly provide for their pets. “We were throwing around ideas on how we could try and give back to the community. This was one of the ideas that came up. The goal is to provide proper nutrition for the homeless pets so they don’t just have to eat out of the dumpsters,” said Dezerae Jenkins, animal care manager with Alberta Animal Services. “We are a drop site for food – it can be any kind of dog or cat food – kibble or wet canned food. We also accept cat litter.

“People can also make cash donations to Pets for the Homeless and that money will go into a veterinary fund if someone’s pet gets sick. We can apply for them to have their vet bill covered as well.”

Over the course of a year, millions of people become homeless in North America and as the economy worsens the numbers will increase. Most people who experience homelessness (80%) are homeless for a short period of time and usually need help finding housing or a rent subsidy. But, for those with pets, it becomes more difficult.

The disadvantaged are forced to choose between their pet and a roof over their head. Most choose to stay on the streets with their pets for longer periods of time.

Their pets are their comfort, provide an emotional bond of loyalty, and are nonjudgmental. It is estimated that one in four homeless and disadvantaged people have a pet. Pets of the homeless do not choose their guardians. A difference can be made to aid these defenseless pets.

“We called the Red Deer Food Bank and they said they have about 1,200 people asking for pet food. It is quite a high number.

They have a program called Kibble Kitchen so through that pet food is collected and then given to those in need,” said Jenkins.

She added for the homeless, their pet provides a sense of comfort and companionship. “There are people that will refuse housing because they have pets and there is no available housing that will allow pets.

It’s a huge thing for these people where they don’t have any family or friends and that is their only lifeline.”

As the program progresses, Jenkins said it is the goal to develop wellness clinics and spa and neuter clinics for those in need.

Pet food can be donated at Alberta Animal Services (4640 61st St.) or at the agency’s Adoption Centre located at Petland.

RCMP LOOK FOR CHAD BANNICK

YOUTH CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULTS

Red Deer RCMP request the public’s assistance to locate 38-yearold Chad James Bannick of Red Deer.

There is some concern for Bannick’s well being, and he is also wanted on several outstanding warrants for failing to comply with court-ordered conditions.

Bannick is described as Caucasian, 5’10” tall, 190 lbs with brown eyes.

He is also balding with brown hair.

Citizens are advised not to approach Bannick if they see him, and to contact Red Deer RCMP immediately at 403-343-5575.

Red Deer RCMP officers have charged a 17-year-old Red Deer youth in relation to sexual assault offences involving both male and female youth victims.

These incidents would have taken place in the Central Alberta area between 2011 and 2015, in some cases while the youths were on trips with Scouts Canada and Cadets Canada, and at other times unrelated to those organizations.

RCMP opened the investigation in May of 2015 when one of the victims filed a complaint.

The ensuing eight-week investigation involved members from Red Deer RCMP General Investigation section and Community Policing section and has identified four additional victims to date.

The youth charged participated with Scouts Canada between 2007 and 2012, and with Cadets Canada between 2011 and 2015.

The youth charged will not be identified in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act. To protect the identity of the victims, specific dates or locations will not be provided.

The youth has been charged with two counts of sexual assault with a weapon, five counts of sexual assault, committing an indecent

act and sexual interference.

The youth will appear in Red Deer court on Aug. 6th.

DRIVER CHARGED AFTER COLLISION WITH CYCLIST A 25-year-old Red Deer man faces a number of charges after refusing to provide a breath sample to RCMP following a serious collision with a cyclist in the early morning hours of July 4th.

At 3 a.m., Red Deer RCMP were called to the intersection of 32nd St. and Mitchell Ave. in response to a report of a serious collision between a vehicle and a cyclist. Several passersby provided first aid assistance to the 17-year-old male victim until EMS arrived on the scene.

The victim was taken to Red Deer Hospital in critical condition and was airlifted by STARS to Edmonton shortly afterward; he remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.

Eric William Petty has been charged with refusing a breath demand, dangerous operation and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

RCMP WARN ABOUT TAX SCAMS

scammers claiming to be calling from Canada Revenue Agency.

The callers claim that the person they have contacted owes money in taxes.

While none of the people reporting the scam have been victimized, several people reported receiving two or more phone calls from the scammers, who have become increasingly aggressive in demanding payment.

In other twists on this scam, callers claim to represent Citizenship and Immigration Canada and claim the intended victim owes ‘immigration fees’, or target small businesses and claim to represent a utility company demanding overdue electricity or gas payments – again, usually in gift cards or prepaid credit cards.

The best protection from scammers is to learn how to resist being pushed into a decision regardless of how persuasive or aggressive the scammer may be.

Remembering the 1937 Red Deer Fair Today marks the start of the 124th annual Westerner Exposition. As usual, our major summer celebration was kicked off with the annual Westerner parade through downtown Red Deer.

The day also provides an opportunity to reflect back on some of the previous fairs and exhibitions.

One of the most successful annual fairs in our community’s history was the one that was held in July 1937.

At the start of the year, there were a great many challenges to staging a profitable event.

The economy was mired in the midst of the Great Depression.

Moreover, while it had seemed that things had been slowly getting better, a sharp new downturn set in as the year progressed. Unemployment jumped. Incomes slid. Bankruptcies soared once more.

Moreover, the great drought, which had been plaguing the Canadian prairies throughout the 1930s, returned with a vengeance.

A heat wave in July 1936 set records across Canada. The prospects for the summer of 1937 did not look much better.

The new Social Credit government essentially went bankrupt in 1936 when it defaulted on millions of dollars of provincial government bonds.

The federal government also began a new round of austerity and scrubbed its grants for regional exhibitions.

DAWE which staged the annual fair, took several measures to remain solvent.

While the 1936 Fair had earned a small profit, the government default on its bonds had hit the Society’s cash reserves hard.

Consequently, several planned attractions had to be cancelled.

A decision was made to cut the midway, with the Vegreville Fair agreeing to pick up the part that Red Deer felt it could no longer handle. While harnessing racing had been a popular, although not particularly profitable attraction, the Fair Board decided to cancel it.

Nevertheless, the Fair Board knew it needed some solid attractions if it was going to attract a reasonable attendance.

Hence, the annual Red Deer Derby horse races remained. The Derby was supplemented with pony, democrat, ‘Indian’ and chariot races, which were not only popular, but also relatively inexpensive to stage.

While the midway had been cut back, a number of popular rides were still booked. They included the ever-popular twin Ferris wheel and merry-go-round as well as a twin rocket ride, Loop-A-Lane, Tilt-A-Whirl, Ride-e-o and a new ride

called the Octopus. The midway also provided an ‘autodrome’ of kiddie car rides on a sort of ‘speedway’.

An animal circus was booked.

It included shows with dogs, ponies, monkeys and bears. Nero, a performing but quite aged lion was also featured.

The big investment was made in the annual grandstand show. One of the main acts was Atenos, a European acrobatic troupe.

Another big attraction was the Sparklets, a group of attractive young women who both danced and sang popular songs.

Pearl Fern and Co., a hillbilly band, was yet another featured act. In order to bring in local talent, the Red Deer Citizens Band (forerunner of the Red Deer Royals) was booked to provide several performances during the Fair.

Just before the start of the Fair on July 22nd, a wave of wet weather hit Central Alberta. Although the visit of the Governor General, Lord Tweedsmuir, on July 12th, was severely curtailed by the heavy rains, to many it looked like the great drought was finally lifting. Fortunately for the Exhibition’s organizers, the skies cleared and sunny weather returned literally on the morning of the opening of the Fair.

The three-day fair was a smashing success. The largest crowds in recent memory turned out. The grandstand shows OLD-FASHIONED FUN - The Midway at the Red were a big hit. Red Deer RCMP have received 12 reports from Red Deerians who have received phone calls from

dumpster in downtown Red Deer last April. The witness provided valuable assistance to police at the time of the event; as the investigation continues, RCMP hope he will come forward for a follow-up interview.

At 10 p.m. on April 29th, RCMP were called to downtown Red Deer in response to an attempted robbery.

The victim fled his two male assailants without injury, and police located one male suspect near Central Middle School.

The suspect pointed a firearm at the police officer before fleeing on foot in the direction of the alley that runs behind Co-op Plaza.

Police contained the area and were quickly approached by the witness, who directed police to the dumpster area in that alley.

The suspect was located in one of the dumpsters and taken into custody without further incident.

The witness was walking northbound in the alley behind Co-op Plaza shortly after 10 p.m. when he encountered the suspect and subsequently approached police.

He is described as wearing a black leather jacket and black jeans, approximately 5’10” tall and in his late 40s.

Locals receive honours for Scouts and Venturer participation

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Several young Red Deer citizens have been awarded high honours for their commitment and achievements in the Scouts and Venturer programs.

Kole Heilemann (Chief Scout Award), Jaret Pack (Chief Scout Award), Heather Mast (Queen’s Venturer Award), Evan Schollie (Queen’s Venturer Award) and Eric Wilkinson (Chief Scout Award) were all recognized in a ceremony at Edmonton City Hall last month.

The awards were presented by Terry Grant, Scouts Canada’s Chief Scout – also known as ‘Mantracker’ from the Outdoor Life Network and Discovery Television series.

Schollie, 17, said the ceremony was a great honour and it means a lot to him to have received the Queen’s Venturer Award.

“It was important for me to get the award because it’s a build up of all the work I’ve done over the past few years. Usually people can’t complete this in one year - they’ve got to be working on it for usually two or three years to get it. I’ve been in scouting for 11 years, and it took me three years to earn this award,” Schollie said. “It was a fancy ceremony in Edmonton City Hall.

Mantracker presented the award to me, which was cool. There were some other kids there getting scouting-related awards but there weren’t many of us who received the Queen’s Venturer Award.”

The Queen’s Venturer Award is the highest capacity of recognition for youth members in the Venturer Scouts Canada Grand Champion Club Steer

program, and the Chief Scout Award is the highest award that can be achieved in Scouts Canada. In order to receive the Queen’s Venturer Award there are several requirements a person must achieve.

These requirements include holding a Venturer Award, a first aid certificate and a World Conservation Award. Additionally, those attempting to achieve the award must also complete community and volunteer service and demonstrate skills such as leadership and peer mentorship.

“One of the requirements is you have 100 hours of volunteer service, so I helped with the younger kids and led some of their activities. I’ve helped at the food bank and have participated in environmental cleanup events. Through my school I did some peer tutoring. I really enjoyed the peer tutoring because some subjects like science I find really fun. It’s rewarding to teach that to younger kids.”

Schollie will be joining several hundred Canadian Scouts, including eight other Red Deerians, at the World Jamboree being held in Japan from July 28th until Aug. 8th. He will depart for a pre-camp in Hong Kong on July 23rd.

Heather Mast, 18, received the same Queen’s Venturer Award. She took part in a World Conservation Event, planting over 700 trees with various students and Scouts in Red Deer and spent time with a local pastor discussing religion and spirituality.

Additionally, she has participated in community projects such as the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES) gift-wrapping at Christmastime, Salvation Army kettle campaigns and has

worked with food banks and various environmental awareness events.

“I also did a project in Madagascar last year with the Scouts, and it was amazing. I went with a girl from my group and other Venturers from across Canada. Madagascar has a lot of poverty, and we went down to participate in building a school and provided labour for that project,” Mast said.

“What I enjoy about Venturers is that we’re active in the community. We have a really great set of leaders. They’re the ones who plan most of the youth events. At the Venture level, we run most of our events, but I’d like to thank our leader, Bruce Schollie. He’s the one who pushed us to do these awards and get through them.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

Now in its 16th year, the awards program recognizes outstanding Alberta volunteers whose contributions have made a lasting impact and helped improve the lives of community members.

Six awards will be presented - two in each category of youth, adult and senior at the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards ceremony to be held Dec. 4th as part of celebrations marking International Volunteer Day on Dec. 5th.

A ďŹ re in Red Deer serves as a reminder to tenants who sublet secondary suites within the dwelling they are occupying to comply with the City’s Land Use Bylaw and the Safety Codes Act to ensure everyone’s safety.

According to Red Deer Emergency Services, an incident on April 20th left a family in an illegal secondary suite at risk due to unattended cooking on the home’s main oor. The main oor tenants, who were not home at the time of ďŹ re, had left the home forgetting to turn off the stove where food was cooking, putting at risk a

mom and her children living in the basement suite.

The tenants were unaware of the ďŹ re on the main oor as there were no interconnected working smoke alarms. Thankfully neighbours alerted 911 when they noted smoke coming from the kitchen window.

As a result of the ďŹ re and the risk posed to tenants in the secondary suite, the main oor tenant who sublet the basement suite, Randel Richards, was charged under the Safety Codes Act, entered into a guilty plea with a settlement in court, and ďŹ ned $6,900.

A secondary suite is a separate dwelling inside a single family home. Secondary suites must meet the minimum standards found in the Alberta Fire & Building Codes. Illegal secondary suites put tenants at risk as they typically do not have interconnected smoke alarms, proper ďŹ re separations, and inadequate exiting. Secondary suites are allowed on a discretionary basis in single family homes in Red Deer.

DREESHEN ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR MUSEUM Earl Dreeshen, MP for Red Deer, recently announced funding of $64,974 through the Museums Assistance Program for the Red Deer and District Museum Society, which manages the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery.

This investment will enable the Museum to host Kids Celebrate!, a youth-focused exhibition organized and circulated by the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau.

This exhibition explores the history and diversity of signiďŹ cant community celebrations in Canada including Diwali, Hanukkah, Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, Easter and HinaMatsuri.

Funding will also support upgrades to the Museum’s collections management system.

The project consists of planning comprehensive storage solutions (including a new system to inventory the Museum’s entire collection), packing the collection, and updating artifact records. These activities are in preparation for the Museum’s temporary relocation to an off-site facility while its permanent storage location undergoes major renovations.

RED DEER: A MODEL ACTIVE CITY The Designed to Move campaign led by Nike recently featured the City of Red Deer in a report to city leaders highlighting exemplary active cities.

Red Deer was proďŹ led as a fast growing city with a commitment to creating an urban environment that enables physical ďŹ tness and mobility through design and was the only Canadian city featured.

The Designed to Move campaign recognizes the work the City does to make

physical activity and movement a priority through the Mobility Playbook.

DETOUR ROUTE FOR RIVER BEND GOLF AREA Township Road 384 (the extension of 67 St.) is closed for the 67th St./30th Ave. expansion project.

As a result of this closure and the existing closure on RR 272 (extension of 30th Ave.), a detour will be in place for local residents on RR 272 and residents going to River Bend Golf and Recreation Area and Discovery Canyon. The detour route will be east on 55th St. (Hwy. 11) from 30th Ave.; north on RR 271 and west on Township Road 390.

Residents on RR 272 can access their properties from the north end of RR 272. The closure is expected to last until the end of construction season.

Work on the project, which will see the construction of a modern two-lane roundabout to improve trafďŹ c ow at 67th St. and 30th Ave. and accommodate future growth in the northeast, began in June and is expected to continue until August 2016.

This will involve extending 67th St. 1 km east and 30th Ave. 2 km north, as well as extending underground servicing along these roadways.

LANGSTRAAT RESIGNS Piet Langstraat, superintendent for Red Deer Public Schools, announced his resignation recently after accepting a role as superintendent and CEO of the Greater Victoria School District in B.C. Langstraat will step down Aug. 14th.

The Board will be announcing an interim appointment as soon as possible.

They are also developing a plan to conduct a comprehensive search for a suitable candidate. Details will be made available later this summer.

ENTERTAINMENT Lindsay Ell set to hit the Centrium stage

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Country singer Lindsay Ell, originally from Calgary, is hitting the stage big time July 18th with the Boom Chucka Boys and Kira Isabella at the Centrium as part of Westerner Days.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with concerts starting at 8 p.m. The concert is free with gate admission.

For the past few years, Ell has been attracting a growing audience of fans via a number of singles, the latest of which is a striking cover of Sugar with Landon Austin.

For Ell, a love for music – and the guitar in particular – was sparked early. She started with the proverbial piano lessons when she was about six, but it was the magic of guitar that really won out.

“Growing up, Shania Twain was my idol,” she explains during a recent chat. “When I was a little girl I would get so upset with my dad if he changed the radio in the car from anything that was country. I knew pretty much every word to every Shania song, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Terri Clark – they were all my idols. I would walk around the house just singing constantly.

“I’m really fortunate to have a very musical family,” she said.

“Whenever we’d get together at Christmas, it would turn into a great big family jam session. I was sort of surrounded by it all through my childhood.”

Ell was also singing in her church youth group at 10, so getting up in front of people became that much more of a natural and comfortable experience. “I used to have one of those plastic microphones and I would carry it around the house singing songs left, right and centre,” she laughs.

Her dad also was a major influence in helping her hone her guitar skills. “Looking back now, I’m really glad I started off with a

classical background – it gave me a really good base. But guitar was much more fun growing up,” she adds with a laugh.

She started playing guitar around the time she was eight.

She was discovered at 13 by BTO and The Guess Who’s Randy Bachman (American Woman, Takin’ Care Of Business) through a songwriting partner.

“He opened up my whole perspective,” she said. “We’d be in the studio and he’d be playing all of these jazz chords – I’d be sitting there with my eyes wide open,” she said. “Randy learned guitar from master jazz guitarist Lenny Breau, so I dove head-first into this world of blues, jazz and rock guitar – learning all these different solos, switching radio stations and trying to get an idea of where all those techniques come from.

“So he really opened my mind to jazz and blues,” she said. “I’ve been very fortunate to have experiences with different genres of music. I’m definitely a country musician at heart, but as a guitar player I can pull from some of those other influences.”

During those formative years, she would also head off to Nashville for two-week songwriting stints, juggling these creative treks with performing in Canada.

Ultimately she settled in Nashville about five years ago, and she credits the musically-rich oasis with fueling plenty of her creativity as well.

“Nashville is an amazing place to live. You can surround yourself with people who will make you a better person, a better musician and a better songwriter. It’s the perfect place for me to do that.”

Obviously, by the point she made the decision to relocate, it seemed clear that Ell was destined for a career in country music – even though she had started studying business at the University of Calgary. “Eventually I knew it just wasn’t going to

A couple of years ago, she embarked upon one of her most exciting opportunities yet - an opening slot on The Band Perry’s ‘We Are Pioneers’ World Tour.

The tour included some 50 dates throughout Europe and North America, and marked Ell’s first trek across several European countries.

Ell is quick to say her journey to success in the industry has been influenced by many along the way. “I have so many friends who have helped me get to where I am,” she said, adding that many here in Canada have also been

key to her growth as a musician, too. “It’s a very warm feeling – it’s very comforting to come back here. It’s almost like the feeling of a Chinook,” she laughs.

“It’s the people who believe in you from the very beginning and champion you and see the vision.

I have a long, long list of people I could thank that would go on for days. I can’t thank these people enough, because when you are starting out, you do need these people who are willing to take a leap of faith. I’ve been very fortunate.”

Singer Carly Thomas is ready to rock Red Deer Carly Thomas is bringing her ‘Say Yes’ tour to The Olive on July 18th.

Backed by an electric guitar and her drummer, the London, Ontario-based singer/songwriter’s show starts at 8:30 p.m.

Thomas was born in Thailand and raised in Argentina, France and various parts of the United States and Canada. Along the way she discovered her soul in music, and launched a career that started under the bright lights of Paris, where she played the famous Fête de la Musique when she was just 16 years old.

At 17 she moved to New York City, developing her craft and stage presence at open mics and clubs in Manhattan’s lower east side.

She continued to play and write over the next decade, spending time living and traveling throughout Canada.

The ‘Say Yes’ tour will include 17 stops in Alberta and British Columbia.

“This tour is all about saying yes to adventure and possibility,” Thomas says.

“It’s about taking my career to the next level and proving that even independent artists can carve out their own path and find success.

“We are very lucky in Canada to have such support and love of music.”

Thomas is supporting her most recent EP, Explode. She has also released two fulllength CDs, Distance (2003) and Up This High (2010).

Explode was released last fall and features five brand new songs that showcase her insightful lyrics, understated vocals and radio-friendly indie rock style.

“I love the creative process, and I love being in the studio making records, but performing the work live is where the real connection happens,” she says.

“I’ve moved around a lot in my life, so touring is something that feels familiar.

I love meeting new people and playing in new towns, and it always brings inspiration.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if I wrote a new album on the road. And taking a huge part of this journey by train means I get to see Canada though a completely different lens.”

Thomas has shared the stage with artists including Trent Severn, Jenn Grant, Connie Kaldor, Matthew Barber, Ma Petit, and Sarah Smith with whom she toured eastern Canada in 2013.

Arts Council announces second Emerging Artist Award The Red Deer Arts Council announced the second Emerging Artist Award has been given to local singer/songwriter Charlie Jacobson. The award, announced in March of 2014, consists of $1,000 and a certificate. The award supports and encourages promising Red Deer artists early in their careers.

Over the last few years, Jacobson, a 22-year-old blues/rock artist, has played hundreds of shows across the prairies and the Rockies. With his guitar and suitcase drums packed in the van, his lifestyle takes him to shows ranging from festivals, house concerts and large blues clubs to community halls and theatres. He released his solo debut EP Live from the Chop Bin in 2013. This year, he is wrapping up his first full length album set to release in the fall.

Jacobson has been cutting his teeth as the guitarist for some of Canada’s well-respected blues acts including Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne, Russell Jackson, David Vest and Donald Ray Johnson.

This has included performances at the Calgary International Blues Fes-

tival in 2013 and 2014, and prominent blues clubs around Alberta. Jackson, Johnson and Vest form the rhythm section on the new Charlie Jacobson Band recording.

Jacobson was raised in Central Alberta with strong ties to the aspen parkland and his grandparents’ farm. This geography of mountains to the west, badlands in the east, prairie to the south and lake land in the north provides a rich palette of imagery to draw on in his songwriting.

In June 2013, Red Deer hosted the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards Gala. The LGAA event was meant to raise legacy funds. As it developed, ideas were presented for use of the legacy funds.

One such use of funds was an art piece developed by Dawn Candy and students from the middle schools.

That artwork is housed in the City of Red Deer building on the main floor.

A second and ongoing use of the funds was imagined by the Red Deer Arts Council for an Emerging Artist Award. As this fitted the mandate of the

Red Deer Arts Council and the Lieutenant Governor’s Distinguished and Emerging Artists Award program, the committee awarded the funds to the Council. The awards are not project grants, but designed to support the development needs of emerging artists, whether they are supplies, further study or experiences, funding to travel for auditions, study or work or even income replacement for non-arts related employment.

The Red Deer Arts Council has also announced this year’s winner of the Princess Margaret Scholarship for Post-Secondary Students is Erin Pettifor of Red Deer.

This is a City of Red Deer award that is the responsibility of the Red Deer Arts Council to adjudicate along with their own Scholarship and Awards program.

Pettifor is a second year student in the Theatre Performance and Creation program at the Red Deer College. The jurors for this scholarship agreed that Pettifor shows exemplary promise for and understanding of her chosen field.

Kids will eat wholesome and nutritious food Before my wife and I had a child of our own, many of my clients would look at the meal plan I created for them and tell me, “My kids won’t eat that.”

What always puzzled me was the meal plan was all real food. Good food - chicken, beef, fish, eggs, rice, yam, potatoes, vegetables, good fats, fruits and stuff like that.

When I would try and say things like, “Give it a try, you might be surprised.” I would get a fast answer of, “You don’t have kids, you wouldn’t understand.”

I got the same thing if I happened to see a client in the grocery store.

For some odd reason, people think I am the ‘food police’, but I assure you I am not.

I only help when asked and offer advice when requested. It is not my place to judge - I happen to have polished off a one litre of cherry chocolate ice cream tonight as part of my cheat meal - we all get to choose.

Back to the client in the grocery store, I would always get, “I’m just buying this stuff for my kids. They won’t eat the good stuff.”

That always made me sad and I did wonder if I was wrong and maybe kids wouldn’t eat good food.

I know as a kid I ate a lot of junk food and maybe I was wrong.

I recall being in third world countries with Rotary International giving out wheelchairs or helping with some project and seeing the local children eat what they were given without a sound or opinion apart from ‘thank you’.

So I always knew it was possible but the question remained - can a North American child eat good food without a fuss?

Before children my wife and I would have lengthy discussions on how we planned to parent and when the food thing came up, we had ideas on what we would say to work with our future child to ensure a healthy start. They were just theories back then, but we felt confident!

Well, we do have a son now (he’s threeyears-old), and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that kids will eat good food and I have proof ! Lots of it in fact!

We stuck to our plans as our little boy came into our world. My wife breastfed and when it was time for pablum; we made our own with a baby bullet blender. It wasn’t too hard and was actually fun. Our son loved it.

McDERMOTT more than others, but as a rule, he got no sugar at all for the first year of his life and very little in his second year.

In his third year, perhaps a little more, but basically he eats what we eat, just less of it.

This past weekend marked our 23rd wedding anniversary. We took our two-person kayak out onto the lake and paddled to a private beach and had a picnic. We brought along various snacks including some farmers’ market carrot cake made with butter, sugar and all the fun stuff. The reason was that at our wedding back in 1992, the cake

was carrot and I thought it would be fun to celebrate that way.

After some of the main snacks of cheese, almonds, crackers and farm fresh blueberries, I pulled out the cake. I offered it around and my three-year-old had a little piece and said it was yummy. Then, he picked up the container of cake and handed it to me. He then lifted up the bag the cake container had been in and handed me that so he could get at the blueberries, which he prefers over cake.

Clearly. He never had another piece of cake. Later that night when it was time for my wife and I to head out on our anniversary date, we offered to pay for pizza for the babysitter and our son, to have a celebration too, and to make supper easy for the babysitter.

We were informed upon our return that

our son had taken a bite of pizza and asked for chicken, peas and brown toast instead.

Since we had all of that handy in the fridge the babysitter happily made him his usual meal.

I guess my point is this - our children develop a palate, taste buds and preferences right from when they are very young. We can influence that to a large degree for a period of time and hopefully those habits carry on into the rest of their lives. I know of way too many people with onset diabetes, cancer and so many other illnesses that I think food - good food – could play a major role in changing.

Kids will eat when they are hungry, so please, for their future and yours feed them well. They will eat it, I promise.

Surgery for swinging-door heart valves Mitral valve surgery can best be described by comparison to the swinging saloon door in old western movies.

It demonstrates what can go wrong with the heart’s valves. And what surgical procedure is needed to correct mitral valve prolapse (MVP). To get a first-hand view of this procedure, I watched Dr. Tirone David, one the world’s great cardiac surgeons, perform the operation at Toronto General Hospital.

The mitral valve separates the two left chambers of the heart. Each time the heart beats the valves swing open, like the doors of a western saloon. But after opening they close firmly again while the heart pumps blood to the body.

JONES The problem is that swinging doors of saloons often develop loose rusty hinges that don’t close well. The mitral valve has the same trouble when the tough parachute-like cords that attach the valves to the heart’s muscle become too loose. When this happens some ejected blood falls back into the heart’s chamber following every beat.

This places extra burden on the heart’s muscle.

If you’re diagnosed with

this condition, don’t panic.

You’re far from the end of the road. Prior to the use of echocardiograms (ultrasound of the heart), doctors believed MVP was present in 17% of women and 5% of men. Now we know it’s less common, affecting about 2.4% of both sexes. But, according to a report from Johns Hopkins University, about 25% of Americans older than age 55 have some degree of MVP. It’s now believed that, in addition to aging, genetics also plays a role in who develops this condition.

How mitral valve prolapse is treated depends on several factors. The great majority of patients with MVP have no idea it is present and normally do not need surgery.

Some patients complain of shortness of breath, palpitations and fatigue. But people without MVP can experience similar symptoms. What often happens is these symptoms occur after the diagnosis, triggering anxiety.

Dr. David says that several factors must be considered before deciding mitral surgery is needed. One of the most important is the severity of the prolapse and what affect it’s having on the heart’s muscle.

There’s an old saying that, ‘A stitch in time saves nine’.

In mild cases of MVP, there’s no point in exposing patients prematurely to the risk of surgery. But it also makes no sense to wait until either

the patient’s symptoms are severe or the muscles of the heart are failing from extra stress.

Mitral valve surgery is not just for incompetent valves. It’s also performed when the mitral valve becomes thickened and rigid from aging and the opening becomes as small as a pencil. The extra work of pushing blood through such a tiny opening can also cause heart failure.

Patients with these conditions often have heart murmurs that can be detected by a stethoscope. But an echocardiogram of the heart will determine their severity and help to gauge whether the condition is worsening.

In recent years there’s been tremendous advancements in surgical technique for the treatment of MVP or stenosis.

The morning I watched Dr. David operate, the patient’s chest was opened in the same way as a bypass operation. This patient suffered from severe mitral

stenosis and required a totally new valve.

The majority of cases performed today try to save the old valve. For instance, it is often possible to shorten the parachute-like cords which restore the valves to their normal position. The advantage to using the patient’s own tissue is that there is no chance of its rejection by the body.

In other cases, minimal invasive surgery can be done by working through the femoral artery, the blood vessel at the top of the leg.

A new valve is guided through the artery using a special catheter tube until it reaches the mitral valve location and is inserted.

Dr. David says there’s no age limit for mitral valve surgery as long as the patient has no other problems that would increase the risk.

His oldest mitral valve patient was 95 years of age.

Local athlete crosses Ironman race off bucket list

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express For nine hours, 55 minutes and 59 seconds one Red Deer man put his body and mind to the test in one of the toughest feats of endurance – an Ironman race.

Sheldon Timms not only finished the 3.8km swim, 42.2km run, and the 180km bike ride – he finished only 38 seconds away from a trip to the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii later this year when he finished in seventh place in his age group.

“They gave away four spots to Worlds,” explained Timms of the Ironman race which took place in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on June 28th. “The first three guys took their spots, then neither of the fourth and fifth place people wanted the fourth spot so it rolled to sixth and the guy that was in sixth took it.

“It was a long day to miss that spot by such a small time margin but that’s just the way life goes sometimes.”

Timms may have crossed Ironman off his bucket list – but he added not making it to the world championship this year is only motivation for him to keep pushing and to continue to shave down his time for next year.

The Sylvan Lake-born athlete began his triathlon journey in 2010 when he completed the Woody’s Triathlon.

With little experience in running and swimming, but having down hill mountain biked extensively in his high school years, Timms found himself with a learning curve ahead of him when a high school friend approached him asking if he wanted to train for an Xterra Race.

Similar to Ironman in endurance, Xterra takes athletes off the paved roads and onto the trails to run, the swim takes place in open water and the bike course is on intense off-road terrain.

“I had done a bit of running in the past but nothing competitively other than the Woody’s Triathlon.

“But two years ago when I started doing this I couldn’t swim 50 metres straight.”

He credits his determination to the eventual transition into a stronger swimmer.

“I just kept going. I had decided I wanted to test out a few triathlons including Xterra so I had to figure the swimming out. Eventually I hit a point where it just clicked and I’m still not an Olympic swimmer but I can make it through the swimming portions of the race and it’s getting better every day.”

all about working alongside his coach, Teresa Richer, of the TriUmph Red Deer Triathlon Club, to who he credits much of his training success to and who he has been training with since November of last year to prepare for the Ironman.

“I thought I knew a reasonable amount about fitness and triathlons,” said Timms. “But the longer I train with her the more I realize how little I know. She has given me so much insight into

When asked what keeps him training Timm explained he has always felt the need to live a life less ordinary.

Bucs dominate Vandals in match up last weekend

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express The Central Alberta Buccaneers dominated ME Global Athletic Park during their recent game against the Lloydminster Vandals, taking home a score of 66-6.

Amidst several penalties, calls of misconduct and the loss of numerous would-be touchdowns (penalties and flags), the boys still man-

aged to take a hefty lead on the Vandals and held on through the game.

Bucs Coach Devon Hand was pleased with his team’s performance.

“On our side, I thought we competed and we did what we set out to do which was to make a statement game, run the ball, score some points, play good defence and get physical – I think we did a really good job with those things.”

At 11 minutes into the first quarter, the Bucs took the lead with the first touchdown secured by Junior Rivera. Rivera kept busy in the first half of the game running plays with great success.

Also in the first quarter, Vandals quarterback Mike Holman scored the first and only touchdown for the team. Bucs captain Mark Fay was successful in blocking the field goal, keeping the Vandals at six points.

As the game drew on, the Bucs showed no signs of slowing down. The team was focused, energetic and aggressive.

Bucs defensive back Tylor Johanesson helped out the team in the second quarter with a massive interception to touchdown, running 88 yards and hit-

ting his field goal to bring the score to 31-6.

“If you just throw the ball at (Johanesson), and there’s no receiver in the air, he’s going to make the play every time. He’s a big play specialist so if you make mistakes around him he’s going to capitalize on them every time,” said Hand.

The Vandals decided to safety late in the second quarter and surrendered their two points to bring the score to 43-6 just before halftime.

Player and President of the Lloydminster Vandals Glen Dembicki said his team knew they were in for a tough game, but were still going to work hard. The Vandals had a short roster for the game but still played with commitment.

“Sometimes you know that you’re going to be in a battle, so you try to play it safe and play a bit smarter when you know you’re short staffed like that.

You might run or kick one out of bounds when you wouldn’t normally. You’ve just got to line up from the guy across from you and

play ball,” Dembicki said.

“We got the win last week, and we’ve got three games out of our next four that we feel we can win.

Home is crazy with this league, and when you have a small roster and you go on the road, it seems to be compounded so much more. We definitely feel like we’ve got the arrow pointing up from the last few seasons.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys and a good core group of guys, and a more local team to Lloyd now so it’s more of a hometown feel than it was when we had a lot of travelling players,” he added.

Tanner Green of the Buccaneers had a big game with several noteworthy plays - including running over 75 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

He helped secure many points for the team.

Hand said Green had run exceptionally well in their recent Grande Prairie game and they decided to let him do it again this weekend. “(Green) is the yin to (Rivera’s) yang. He’s the pow-

er guy, Junior’s the outside guy and they’re both very good. We made the decision to run the ball because of how Tanner ran in practice and how he ran in Grande Prairie. He had 76 yards and four carries, and his carries here will be well over 10 or 12 yards – he’s a beast,” said Hand.

The Bucs continued to dominate the gridiron and walked away with a 60 point lead – a total of 66 for the Bucs and six for the Vandals.

The Bucs now have an important game coming up on July 25th where they will face off against the Fort McMurray Monarchs.

“With Fort Mac – last I heard, they’re doing the same thing we are - they’re making statements in games and are looking to put on us. We lost to the Gators, Fort Mac lost to Gators, so really the winner of our game gets the first round buy-in for playoffs, so this is huge. It’s going to be a pretty wild game,” said Hand.

Monitoring the ongoing chatter about interest rates One headline suggests interest rates are bound to rise soon, the next suggests they may drop to new lows, and a third suggests no changes anytime soon.

This has been the case since rates dropped to 50year record lows in 2009.

Many were adamant that rates could go no lower at that point, and yet they have with a few short-lived blips upward, in defiance of all who are calling for a return to normal - whatever normal is now.

Keep in mind that a key driver of interest rates is the economy in general.

What drives interest rates down? Economic bad news.

What will drive rates up?

Economic good news. Economic good news seems in short supply since 2008.

Interest rates are a very large economic lever, far too large to be used simply to cool the arguably overheated real estate markets of two particular cities (Vancouver and Toronto).

Cooling of real estate is addressed not through interest rate hikes, but through policy changes. Most commentators forget that only

All of those things are gone or changed radically, and reality is that borrowers in 2008 – at nearly double the current interest rates – qualified for larger, and arguably riskier, mortgages than borrowers do today.

Interest rates will not be adjusted based on the detached home frenzy of Toronto and Vancouver.

Lending guidelines have already been adjusted accordingly. Nor is it valid to argue that rates have been so low for so long. How long they remain low is a func-

tion of inflationary and deflationary forces in the general economy.

The sign on the streets?

Watch for a bunch of our peers spending money like those proverbial sailors on shore leave that we mentioned last month. A brandnew truck in each of your neighbours’ driveways, each unloading brand new 80” flat screen TVs - that is what will give the economy a strong boost and shift inflationary numbers into the ‘exceeding expectations’ category.

Until that time the steady stream of lacklustre economic news is likely to serve mortgage holders well. The big beneficiaries will be those in fixed rates approaching renewal dates over the next 12 to eight months, and those enjoying the ride in their variable rate mortgages.
