with a pre-show artists’ talk at 6 p.m., offering the public an opportunity to participate in an informal community circle and dialogue with participating artists, collectors, mentors, curators and teachers involved in the projects being presented at the gallery. The three concurrent shows feature emerging, midcareer and established regional artists.

ing exhibition entitled “Record (Re)Create: Contemporary Coast Salish Art from the Salish Weave Collection.” The exhibition showcases a selection of works by fourteen artists of Coast Salish ancestry from the Salish Weave Collection, a private art collection held in British Columbia. As examples of a diverse range of traditional and contem-
porary media and techniques, the works in this exhibition effectively negotiate the interrelationality of the traditional and the contemporary, to record history, to recreate form, and to create new works that simultaneously uphold the relevance of history and communicate the importance of change in the contemporary world. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue that includes an introduction by exhibition curator Toby Lawrence, artists’ biographies, and essays by Coast Salish artist lessLIE and Alaska-born art historian India Young that provide critical and historical contextualization to the artworks in this exhibition, and importantly expand on the discourse surrounding Coast Salish art past, present, and future. Featured artists include: Jane Marston, Charles Elliott, Susan Point, Stan Greene, Andy Everson, Chris Paul, lessLIE, Maynard Johnny Jr., Angela Marston,
Luke Marston, John Marston, Thomas Cannell, Kelly Cannell, Dylan Thomas. The show is curated by Toby Lawrence and organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. All works are on loan from the Salish Weave Collection. On view in the CVAG’s Window Gallery and on the Plaza is a collaborative site installation project entitled “Ba_k_wine’ Mescakasa (Soul Hair)”, by George Littlechild and Liz Carter, comprised of large format self-portraits, woven braids and prayer sticks made from Kwakwala and Cree cultural materials and objects. Littlechild and Carter de-
scribe the importance of hair, a primary element in their work, as “a physical extension of our thoughts and braids as a symbol of oneness and unity. Individually each strand may be perceived as weak, but when joined together - woven into one soul, the result is strength.” “Ba_k_wine’ Mescakasa (Soul Hair)” coincides with “Walking with our Sisters,” a memorial installation for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women of North America, that will be presented in the Comox Valley from July 31-Aug 15, 2015. The site installation has been created in honour of these Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and the Residential School Sur-
vivors. The artists share their collective process of making each braid and prayer stick “as a means of shedding light on the many abuses and deaths rained upon Canada’s First Peoples. We braid and we pray that peace will one day be ours.” CVAG’s Community Space will house a printmaking exhibition showcasing current and past Wachiay Friendship Centre students from the “Youth Art, Design Print Program” - a partnership program between the Wachiay Friendship Centre and the Comox Valley Art Gallery. This year’s participants include: Amanda Taylor, Harlequin Chapman, Kai Conradi, Tristan Bedford, Billie Heiplalu, Aki
Marinakis, Marlo Wylie, Ethan Astles, Katy Lucas. Also on display is a selection of works by instructors and mentors involved in the program. All three shows open to the public on June 20th and run until September 5th, with the exception of the Youth Printmaking Project, which ends on August 15th. The gallery will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for statutory holidays. Admission to the gallery is by donation. The CVAG gift shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more details about shows and events at the gallery, please visit www.comoxvalleyartgallery.com

Put yourself in the bubble Sport of ‘bubble soccer’ coming to Centennial Sports Festival on June 27 Bubble soccer is coming to Courtenay, rounding out the fun activities happening at the Centennial Sports Festival on June 27th! This game is just as exciting to watch as it is to play, as players put on the protection of an inflated bubble and hit the field to let the good times roll. Bubble soccer is pretty much exactly the way it sounds … all the skills and thrills of a great soccer game but with the added thrill of full cushioned contact and the challenge or getting yourself up again when you lose your balance. The inflated bubbles have a diameter of about 5 feet and act like human bubble wrap, covering an adult body from head to thigh. Your head, body and arms are in the bubble at all times, so calling a hand ball foul is one thing the referee won’t have to watch for. Bubble soccer is free to try, fun to watch and just one of the many fun activ-
The refs won’t have to worry about hand balls during bubble soccer games ities and skill camps that families can enjoy on June 27th at the Comox Valley Sports Centre. For younger kids, Vancouver Island InsuranceCentres will be sponsoring a KidZone with games to play, a bouncy castle, with free hotdogs and beverages thanks to
the sponsorship of Quality Foods. The Family Sports Festival is a fun prelude to the big Tailgate Party to follow at 3pm, with CFL Alumni and Felion Dancers, and watching the CFL Season Opener between Saskatchewan and Winnipeg on the JUMBO LED screen which is sponsored by Rice Toyota. You can book your free tailgate space in advance by calling 250-703-4857 or 250-334-4441. Or, you
can stop in at City Hall or the Lewis Centre (while supplies last) so you can bring your own barbecue and fixings down. Come and join the party where there will be evening concerts sponsored by Coastal Community Credit Union & Tim Hortons, and of course a lot of friendly faces. It’ll be a great way to spend a Saturday, and you may even be the lucky winner of a few door prizes and giveaway prizes.
The facility is sponsored by the Comox Valley Regional District, however questions about the event can be directed to the Courtenay Centennial Celebration Committee at 100years@courtenay.ca or for more info, visit the City of Courtenay website at Courtenay.ca/100. Citizens of the Century honoured by Courtenay Formal recognition set for symphony night The Citizens of the Century Award, sponsored by the Canadian Western Bank, offered local families, businesses, and organizations an opportunity to honour deserving volunteers past or present for their outstanding contribution to the City of Courtenay. Individuals and groups in the local community nominated hundreds of local citizens, and after a difficult review by the Citizens of the Century committee, the recipients of this award were announced in last week’s newspapers. Who are the Citizens of the Century? They are volunteers who over the past 100 years have contributed their time, talent, and vision to make Courtenay the city that it is today in areas of sport, arts and culture, recreation, business, health and social programs and youth initiatives.
Edwin Grieve, here as ‘Century Sid’ in homage to Sid Williams’ character ‘Century Sam’, is a citizen of the century They represent the determination of pioneering families, the innovation of following generations, and momentum into the future. As residents of Courtenay, we all continue to benefit from their contributions, and what better time to celebrate than during Homecoming Week. Recipients or represen-
tatives are asked to pick up their Citizens of the Century recognition package at City Hall between June 22nd and July 3rd. A formal recognition of the Citizens of the Century as a whole will be held during the Symphony and Fireworks at the Courtenay Airpark on July 4th at approximately 7:30pm.

Bike Draw Booth and get a ticket. Their hand will be stamped and then at 3pm on the Lewis Park Stage over a dozen brand new shiny bikes with helmets are given away. The bikes are donated by generous service clubs in the Valley and over the years, hun-
dreds of kids have been lucky to have won a bike. Courtenay is celebrating its 100th birthday and Canada Day this year will be a great celebration. Canada Day in Courtenay is a fun family event, please plan to come! comoxvalleycanadaday.ca.

Celebrate Canada at Courtenay events
Courtenay’s beautiful location attracts residents from around the world and this diversity is especially celebrated on Canada Day when local residents and visitors gather downtown to share their identity as Canadians and the unique lifestyle we all enjoy. The celebrations start a bit early this year with fun, free events stretching over four days. As part of the warm up to the big day, the Multicultural Festival in Simms Park on Saturday, June 27th at 5 pm will showcase Cuban band Brisas del Palmar, as well as Azucena Flamenco. Head back down to Simms Park on Sunday June 28th at 6 pm for the Battle of the Bands and come cheer on the emerging talents of local 19 and under musicians competing to win an opportunity to make a professional recording. The Nite Before Concert wraps up the warm up events on Tuesday, June 30th with “The Originals”, starring Sue Medley and the Back Roads Band, Todd Buttler’s Band, Gord Carter, and Comox
& Friends. Wake up nice and early and start your Canada Day morning with the Kinsmen’s Pancake Breakfast in Simms Part on Wednesday, July 1st at 7 am. Then lace up those running shoes and join the 5th Street Fun Run, which follows the parade route and starts at 9:30am (reg-
istration at Woods Ave at 9:15am). Also part of the July 1st celebrations, the Freedom of the City will be renewed to honour HMCS Quadra, CFB Comox 19 Wing, and the Canadian Scottish Regiment. Courtenay has a long partnership and history with its Canadian Armed

Symphony and fireworks wrap up week Pack your blanket and picnic basket for an evening never to forget Centennial Celebrations will reach a peak at the Courtenay Airpark on Saturday, July 4th with the Symphony and Fireworks display. Everyone is welcome to bring their blankets, their lawn chairs, and their picnic to enjoy birthday cake and the celebration of a century! (Please note that no food vendors will be on site so please bring all the food and beverages your family will need.) The Centennial Homecoming week will be one of many reunions with people traveling to Courtenay to see family and visit old friends. Expect to see familiar faces, and maybe even some you haven’t seen in a while. There will be entertainment throughout the afternoon starting at 2:45 at the Courtenay Airpark to take in, including the K’umugwe Dancers, 7 Storey Circus, the Jilli Martini Band, Reunion, the Lonely Guys, Carlos and Carlita, Azucena Flamenco and The Mutts.
The K’umugwe Dancers have been performing together since 2001 and will be sharing songs and dances of the K’ómoks and Kwakwaka’wakw peoples. This is a great opportunity to learn more about First Nations traditions and the culture of those who first named the region “The Land of Plenty”. Citizens of the Century, sponsored by Canadian Western Bank, will be recognized at approximately 7:30 pm and appreciated as a whole by local dignitaries for their contributions to our community. This acknowledgement will not be without some high quality fanfare, including an evening performance by the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra at approximately 8:00 pm and a spectacular fireworks display at approximately 10:30 pm. The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra, which is celebrating its 10th year, is directed by Pippa Williams, Principal oboist with the Vancouver Island

J.R. Edgett to celebrate 40 years by helping light up the sky

Edgett has been involved in completing a variety of public and private projects over the years including site development for some of Courtenay’s largest retail centers such as Walmart, Home Depot and most recently, the new Thrifty Foods complex. The local business is proud with its group of local employees, many of whom have worked with the company for
years. It is also thankful for the numerous lasting relationships it has nurtured and developed with clients as many of its projects are for repeat customers. J.R Edgett’s strong relationships with local municipalities, regional districts, BC Hydro and Defense Construction Canada reinforce local infrastructure and the region’s economy.
