Seafood and Aquaculture Industry Expands and Changes Key BC Sector Facing Increasing Product Demand and Challenges

marks the 9th annual BC Shellfish and Seafood Festival, an extravagant 10-day event that is the largest of its kind in British Columbia.

The Festival & trade Expo, will be held June 12-2, during BC Seafood Month.

This popular event, which became a partnership between Comox Valley Economic Development and the BC Shellfish Growers’ Association (BCSGA) three years ago, has become a true destination attraction that features numerous gala dinners and culinary events, producer farm tours, concerts, and educational and industry development seminars - all targeted to West Coast seafood enthusiasts and the larger aquaculture industry. It also serves to increase awareness and support for the shellfish and seafood industry producers and related businesses.

BC Seafood & Expo Workshop Series New for 2015 is the BC Seafood Expo and Workshop Series (June 13/14), which boasts sessions from 30 plus leaders in the fields of aquaculture research and development, companies and government representatives working in exporting and trade, as well as innovation and knowledge mobilization institutions. Based on the Seafood Expo North American and others, it is designed to meet the needs of the West Coast aquaculture industry by providing the opportunity to increase expertise, while

doing business with buyers, industry innovators and leaders, suppliers, and international representatives from throughout North America and Europe. The Expo was developed by Comox Valley Economic Development and the industry, including the BC Shellfish Growers Association (BCSGA), the BC Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA), and the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) in recognition of the importance of the seafood sector to BC coastal community regional economies.

Official Festival Launch Event Kicking off the festivities June 12 from 4 – 9 p.m. is Fresh Fest, an event designed to tantalize the taste buds while showcasing the musical talents of rising stars Zerbin, along with the River and the Road and Luke Blu Guthrie.

Chef Andrew Stigant, Russell Food Equipment and Chef Hamid Salimian, captain of Culinary Team Canada for the World Culinary Olympics, will team up with other talented chefs to showcase culinary creations that are heart healthy and tasty, using BC’s finest aquaculture products and fresh ingredients from Locals Restaurant, Custom Gourmet, Eatmore Sprouts, Prontissima Pasta, Chef and Captain, As you Like it Products, and West Coast Mobile Kitchen.

BC Seafood Enjoyed Around the World In 2014, seafood exports rose 10% to $981 million, with Atlantic salmon ($255 million), crabs ($102 million) and sockeye salmon ($90 million) as the top three products).

The top three export markets for BC agriculture and seafood products in 2014 were: • United States: $2.04 billion, up 12% from $1.8 billion.

• China: $264 million, up 16% from $228 million.

Fanny Bay Oysters Celebrates Industry Fanny Bay Oysters, a 35-year fixture on the shellfish scene, is not only part of the Expo but is also sponsoring the Oyster Shucking Championships, hosting processing plant tours and participating at Comox By The Sea Celebration. Company owner Bill Taylor is also speaking at the BC Coastal Communities Mayors & Chairs’ Breakfast. Fanny Bay Oysters has much to be proud of, including phenomenal growth over the years.

“We’ve seen the industry change,” said general manager Brian Yip. “Since the current owners bought the business eight years ago, we have been investing and putting more infrastructure into farming more shellfish.” He said that Fanny Bay Oysters is seeing strong demand for its oysters, clams and mussels both locally and overseas.

How good are Fanny Bay oysters? Don’t ask Yip to compare one to another. His opinion is that oysters are like wine. Each farm location is different, as is the terroire where it grows. What he can tell you for sure is that the oysters that grow in the Comox Valley region are superb – at least that’s the feedback he has received from previous shellfish festivals.

“We’re in this business as innovators and improvers,” Walker said, noting that the history of fish farms has led to the idea of containment farms. From open net pens on the Sunshine Coast 35 years ago, to more Northern waters where the conditions were better and now, back to areas where the markets are more accessible. Efficiencies in transportation may well make up for the increased cost of land farms, Walker said – and that will spark an interesting conversation at the Expo.

Manatee Holding Ranching the Sea Eric Gant, president of Manatee Holdings Ltd. would agree wholeheartedly that the industry is constantly evolving – and that it’s anything but dull. Manatee Holdings helped pioneer the wild geoduck clam fishery in BC in 1978, and also spearheaded the geoduck clam culture Industry in the province. Gant’s vision is to transform the aquaculture industry, not just in BC, but even worldwide. He sees the BC Shellfish & Seafood Festival as a way to spread the message.

“I’m trying to use myself as a model of how we should accelerate the shift from fishing to ranching the sea.

It’s impossible to support human existence from hunting on land – it’s the same thing on the ocean. We have to shift to aquaculture. I’m striving to create a system of food production that’s actually beneficial to the ocean’s ecology rather than detrimental.”

In this, the company’s second time participating in the festival, it is offering tours to help educate the public and the industry on sustainable shellfish “ranching.”

He believes the way to overcome resistance to aquaculture is to actively show people the benefits – and that’s why the Festival is so important.

Salish Sea Foods Diversity The First Nations company, Salish Sea Foods, is thriving through diversity. It farms oysters, clams, geoducks and smokes fish. General manager Tom Broadley sits on the board of directors of the Festival’s Gala. Like Gant, he believes education is the key to continued growth for the entire industry – and the Expo is certainly contributing to knowledge of the industry in a big way.

He said that the Festival has also grown to the point where its influence is being felt right across the province.

“The first year we had local chefs who volunteered to do the gala meal. Now, we’ve got the best restaurants across the province volunteering to come and cook. We thought this was the best way: instead of advertising, the proof is in the pudding, and so we have the Gala and Festival. It really helped us as shellfish growers but it also really helps the local restaurants and hotels and the supporting industries around us.”

Mac’s Oysters Presents Tours Mac’s Oysters Ltd. is an integrated shellfish farm, processor and exporter that is owned and managed by the original farmers, the McLellan family. Mac’s is recognized as a pioneer in oyster and clam aquaculture on Canada’s Pacific Coast. At this year’s Expo and Festival, Mac’s Oysters is offering beach tours – an event that is bound to prove popular.

“We’ll show people a few ways we grow the oysters and a couple of ways we grow the clams,” said manager Gordy McLellan. “We’ll have a nice little walk on the beach, which is always just fun to do anyway.” He added that he wants people to see what the industry is up to and how it is actually benefitting the environment. The oyster rafts create an artificial reef, which is a great help to the local fish population.

The industry also provides good jobs. McLellan said that his operation alone employs about 60 people.

And then there’s the Festival and the food that comes with it.

“And who doesn’t want to have a good feed of oysters?”

McLellan said.

Education & Innovation

The Deep Bay Marine Field Station, a part of Vancouver Island University, supports both pure and applied coastal and marine research activities related to: sustainable shellfish aquaculture development; preservation of coastal ecosystems; and inter-disciplinary projects involving local communities. The Field Station is also a big supporter of the BC Shellfish and Seafood Festival. Once again this year, it will be offering “Oysters 101” that not only includes a light oyster dinner, but also a talk on the social and cultural history of oysters. The same event was sold out last year.

Field station manager Brian Kingzett expects tickets to disappear quickly again this year. The food is delicious but the talk is an especially big draw, managing to be both fun and informative at the same time. The Field Station is also offering foraging workshops and tours of its facility.

Well, the answer is that everyone does, including the people taking part in the Festival and speaking at the Expo. One of those key speakers this year is Dr. Stephen Cross, the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Sustainable Aquaculture at North Island College. Cross also heads the SEA-Vision Group, a corporate leader in the development of a new Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture (SEAfood) production model. His first of two talks deals with ocean acidification and the effect of climate change on shellfish aquaculture. The second will describe the SEAfood System concept and its potential as a new production sector for the coast. Cross also sits on the board of directors of the BCSGA and has since the Festival began.

“We wanted to engage the community in an event where we could showcase our products,” Cross said. “It’s grown exponentially from there.” He added that the Expo and Festival is an excellent way to educate the public about aquaculture. From an academic perspective, he said it shows how research is helping the industry be global leaders in sustainable seafood production.

He noted that the topic of climate change is especially important. It’s serious and it is affecting the industry much earlier than previously anticipated. Academic research today is focused on solutions to that issue. Cross hopes that people learn something at the Expo; at the same time, he also wants them to enjoy the pleasures of seafood and the

“We’re also interested in the switch from a resource extraction economy to a knowledge-based resource economy, where we are doing it in a way that is much more sustainable and smarter. We think this is very important: that we try to support industries that retain a working waterfront and promote a healthy coastal environment. It’s good to see the expansion of that to becoming a celebration of our seafood and that includes the salmon farming industry and the wild seafood that is harvested here and the shellfish that is harvested here in the Strait of Georgia.”

almon is one of nature’s superfoods. Sometimes called nature’s heart medicines, Omega-3s help repair heart damage and strengthen heart muscles. They can also raise your good cholesterol while lowering the bad cholesterol, and reduce the risk of stroke, Alzheimer’s and certain autoimmune diseases. As an excellent source of selenium and vitamins B6 and B12, salmon boosts your immune system and improves your energy, and the bioactive peptide calcitonin has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of osteoarthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions. Add in Vitamins A and D and you’ve got a great natural anti-depressant. Now this is a no brainer…you get

In fact, 2014 marked the first year that over half of the world’s seafood was farmed, with projections showing this number is expected to grow to 75% in just 15 years.

Salmon farmers on Vancouver Island are in a unique position to help meet the growing demand.

BC’s coast offers significant opportunity to raise fish, while also creating jobs and supporting coastal communities. The industry provides stable, yearround jobs in remote areas that traditionally have higher rates of unemployment – paying 30% higher than the median employment income in BC Supporting aquaculture and eating more seafood leaves us with healthy people and a healthy economy.

• Salmon farming in BC accounts for 89% of total provincial aquaculture production • Farm-raised salmon account for 77% of the total wholesale value of BC salmon (wild and cultured).

Canadian Farmed Seafood: It’s sustainable, nutritious, and a source of high value jobs

Canadians who frequent their local supermarket for seafood have almost certainly had a taste of the health and nutrition benefits of modern aquaculture.

As a country, we already produce some of the finest farmed salmon, trout, oysters and mussels – and British Columbia leads the way in terms of volume of production.

Aquaculture is in fact among the fastest growing food sectors in the world, accounting for nearly fifty per cent of the world’s total fish production. The United States alone already imports over $5 billion in farmed seafood every year.

But that’s just the start. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, aquaculture will account for two-thirds of the global food fish consumption by 2030.

The Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, an industry organization that represents seafood farmers from coast to coast to coast, is dedicated to ensuring that Canadian farmed seafood production continues to grow to meet world demand – and in doing so, becomes a vital source of jobs, nutritious food and economic opportunities into the future.
