Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker has proposed a joint planning session with Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read regarding the development of “a strategic vision” for the Pitt Meadows airport.

In a recent letter to Read, Becker proposes hosting a joint workshop for the two councils, with experts John Becker in the aviation industry Pitt Mayor facilitating the meeting, “to ensure both councils have an opportunity to educate themselves a bit more about airports... and discuss some of the issues and opportunities that might exist for our airport.”

Following the workshop, Becker would like to see a strategic planning session take place, that would include both cities, representatives from the airport board, and “some form of community representation.”

Those who cross the Golden Ears Bridge on a regular basis know full well that it can take a significant toll on their pocketbooks.

Drivers with a transponder or TReO decal currently pay a $3.05 toll charge every time they cross the bridge, with the cost slated to go up to $3.10 in mid-July.

Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker hopes to lighten that burden, with a proposal to TransLink to lower toll charges on the Golden Ears Bridge while the Patullo Bridge connecting Surrey to New Westminster is under repair.

TransLink is proceeding with plans or structural seismic upgrades and deck rehabilitation on the Pattullo, which was opened in 1937 and is one of the region’s oldest crossings.

In a letter to Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read and Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, Becker wrote, “It has been brought to my atten-

tion that there is a proposal for an 18 month reduction in tolls on the Port Mann Bridge while the Patullo Bridge is being resurfaced.

Reducing tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge during this time period is also being considered.”

Becker added that this 18 month reduction period is estimated to begin in March 2016 and “would

provide a great opportunity to measure the impact that a reduction in fees would have on the utilization of the Golden Ears and Port Mann Bridges.”

“It is critical that we advocate that the Golden Ears Bridge also be reduced to the same level as the Port Mann Bridge during this time period to provide the technical analysis that is needed to determine if use will increase enough to keep revenue streams consistent with current collections,” the letter stated.

In December, the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and Surrey Board of Trade called the B.C. government to suspend or reduce tolls on the Port Mann when maintenance work gets underway on the Pattullo.

A special meeting held between the City of Maple Ridge and provincial, as well as federal representatives last week, regarding the city’s homelessness issue, – in particular around the camp on Cliff Avenue – Nicole Read left those Maple Ridge involved mayor with a few talking points, specifically when it comes to who’s responsible for what.

“Homelessness is an issue in the jurisdiction of higher level governments,” said Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read.

In Read’s opinion, the province should be taking steps to help solve the issue, without having to be prodded by the city.

There is “no doubt that the situation on Cliff Avenue is troubling to the community, local businesses, and to myself,” said Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton.

Dalton countered Read’s position and said the province “does not have the authority” to come and clear it up, as it falls “under the city’s jurisdiction and bylaws.”

It was reported recently that the number of people currently part of the homeless camp now totals more than 100, although Read disputes those numbers. saying she believes the numbers are 32 tents and 64 campers.

t one o’clock in the morning on June 13, under the stadium lights of Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park, Kiersten Duncan and her teammates made a small sacrifice for others living with cancer.

Today, the 22-year-old rookie Maple Ridge City councillor proudly sports a buzz cut.

“Most people recognize what it’s for, and it was quite widely publicized so most people were really excited when they saw me,” Duncan said, about her newly shaved head. “They went, ‘Oh my gosh! She really did it!’” his year marked Duncan’s first experience with the Langley Relay For Life, which ran over 12 hours from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on June 12 and 13.

Duncan connected to the Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser through her good friend Phil Shuttlewood, who lives in Langley and ultimately was the person who shaved her head for donations.

“He was getting a team together and my friends and I thought that if we were going to raise money, let’s do something really fun and different that we haven’t done before,” Duncan said.

Hence the head shaving.

Initially, Duncan was the only member of “Shaving Grace” who was going to make the sacrifice.

She dyed her hair pink for a month to bring attention to her cause.

Just past the midway point of the relay, eight team members stepped up to have their heads shaved, which helped “Shaving Grace” collectively raise more than $3,500 in donations for the society. uncan said the entire relay experience in Langley was enjoyable, albeit much chillier once her head was shaved.

Preventing local fires

S

mokey the Bear is worried about making sure you don’t burn down the woods, but wildfires don’t need a whole forest to get going.

It’s dry out there, and about to get drier and hotter with a heat wave expected to start as soon as this weekend. Every year, firefighters spend a lot of their time dealing with what can only be called stupid fires – fires started through simple, careless ignorance.

Cigarette butts are still the main cause of these fires, butts tossed onto dry grass or bark mulch on medians and in parks. The smoker can walk away and nothing seems to happen, sometimes for hours or days.

But the fire can smolder, burrowing underground and biding its time.

Then there’s the puff of smoke, and if we’re lucky, the fire department gets a call when that’s all it is.

There have been some serious fires in the Lower Mainland in recent years, including in 1996 and 2005 in Burns Bog. The smoldering fires claimed 170 hectares and 200 hectares of land respectively. Numerous small brush fires have struck in other suburban areas around Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Other communities north of the Fraser River have to worry about interface fires – blazes that start in the forest and then march towards residential areas.

While there have been just a few minor incidents in Pitt Meadows of late – according to the community’s assistant fire chief Brad Perrie – it along with Maple Ridge are potential matchboxes – all it takes is a careless toss of a cigarette, or out-of-control backyard fire.

If our recent drier, hotter summers are the result of global warming, we will see these tinder-dry conditions more frequently in the future.

That will place an even larger burden on us to be cautious with fire.

Learn about your local rules for outdoor burning before you put a match to the bonfire or fire pit. Put out that cigarette somewhere safe. And keep an eye out for those telltale puffs of smoke coming from the vacant lots, the medians, and the backyards.

The eggs hatch into larvae, often just one per apple, that tunnel all through the fruit as it grows. One or two flies can devastate an entire dwarf tree like the ones I have.

That first year, I got three edible apples out of the four or five dozen I picked from a single tree.

So I did some research, found myself some pesticide which, used in the right way, would have little or no impact on our beneficial bugs, “acceptable” risk to our birds, but bad for fish, so I had to keep it far from our pond.

OK. That seemed to work, although I was concerned about the “acceptable” risk to the feathered colony, including those lovable chickadees, that we’ve cultivated to handle most of our garden pest problems for us.

So I did more research, and found several university agriculture departments recommend sticky fly paper to attract and trap the maggot flies.

Large-scale orchards use the yellow stickies to alert them to the flies, and ensure best pesticide practices by timing for optimum effectiveness and minimum risk.

For just a few small trees, they suggested, the sticky traps would provide adequate control without additional pesticide. So I hung one in my earliest apple tree.

And this morning I was heartbroken to find a young chickadee splayed across the sticky sheet. Its wings were twisted and contorted and plumes of feathers had been torn from its body. It had put up a massive fight. And lost.

I learned two important lessons.

One lesson was that trying to save the environment around us is far more complicated than we humans can ever truly comprehend.

The other is that sometimes the price for saving a few damned apples can be unacceptably high.

Homeless solutions trample constitution Dear Editor, Our mayor is to be commended for her sincere concerns about the plight of the homeless in Maple Ridge.

It is not just Maple Ridge that has this problem, it is clear across the country as well as in the United States.

As far as helping to solve this problem, I can tell you it cannot be accomplished without trampling on the constitutional rights of the homeless themselves.

Canada is a free country where we are all free to live where we choose, work (or

not work) where we choose, and to associate with whoever we wish.

Unless the “state” acquires the rights to deal with the problem outside the requirements of our constitution, there can be no solution.

Sure, some of these people can be helped.

But, that would require them to put an honest effort forward on their part.

There are many homeless who would jump at an opportunity to participate in such programs where they are “partners” with

Insects invade Volker Park Dear Editor, Nature vs Nurture… we traded socializing our pets for an invasion of stinging pests.

If you thought dogs required pest control, try an insect invasion.

Don’t walk or play in Volker Park anytime this summer, you will be stung.

Since the closing of the dog park, the entire park has been taken over by stinging insects.

Walking in Volker Park is like walking through a stinging land mine.

It’s not safe for dogs; it’s not safe for children.

What are the parks and recreation department heads going to do to make Volker Park safe for this community?

the government entity responsible for managing such programs.

One such program was in effect back in 1971, when I was a young man.

The federal government managed the unemployed through a program known then as “manpower.”

People who were in need of a job would be summoned to the manpower office nearest to them, take an aptitude test, and then a manpower agent would offer the applicant one of three or four training opportunities that indicated they would do well at, based on the questionnaire they had filled out.

There were at least six people in my welding class, at then BC Vocational School, who

had come to the course in this fashion.

They were told if they did not take a course then once their unemployment insurance ran out they would not be eligible for welfare.

The incentive was quite successful and those welders I knew from the class did very, very well in life.

There was also a program for first-time homebuyers back then and the houses that qualified were subsidized by the federal government.

Bare bones, but quite livable. There are partial solutions, but those solutions do require certain rights to be set aside and in Canada, that will not happen.

Kindness overwhelms Dear Editor, Our family recently lost our home to fire.

As devastating as that was, and continues to be, it has given us the opportunity to witness first hand, the kindness, caring, and generosity of the people living in this community.

Though we will express our gratitude in person, we would also like to acknowledge some of these people in a public way (read full letter online).

It goes without saying that first and foremost we want to thank the Maple Ridge firefighters, the Ridge Meadows RCMP, and the BC Ambulance Service for everything they did for us.

These are true professionals and it was impressive to see them work together as a team. The situation was a difficult one and we appreciate how hard they all worked!

We would also like to thank all our friends, family, co-workers, and community. You truly are amazing!

We lost a lot of “stuff” in the fire, but we still have everything that matters.

Garbage must be collected Dear Editor, We will need the pied piper in this City if a universal garbage collection is not brought in.

The rats are getting more plentiful and bigger.

As more people move into our town the garbage piles up and the rats, raccoons, bears, and coyotes come out to enjoy the feast.

There are the people, like me, who have garbage pickup and we have the recyclers, like me. But we all create garbage.

For every one person who recycles to the max and leaves a very small garbage footprint, we have the people that “do not.” And they wait till there is enough garbage for it worth while paying at the transfer station. Rats and other night crawlers come out to enjoy the feast.

History (the plaque, for example) has shown that waste must be removed from large populated areas.

Why are we worried about a small tax increase to get this service, by private or municipal workers?

og agility and skills were on full display this past weekend, at HIGHRUN Dog Sports in Pitt Meadows.

The event, which was an Agility Association Of Canada (AAC) event, featured master’s level dogs demontstrating what they were capable of for those in attendance.

These agility trials at HIGHRUN are a fairly regular thing, said the facility’s Bev Mattson.

This particular trial was put on by Pacific Agility Clan, she furthered.

Property Taxes are Due July 2, 2015 2015 property taxes and Home Owners Grant applications are due on July 2. There are several ways to pay your taxes: Online Payments. On your online bank account, just add “City of Pitt Meadows” as a bill payee, and use your roll number (found on your tax notice) without the decimal, as your account number.

At your Bank or Credit Union. You can pay your property taxes at most chartered banks in Canada, credit unions in BC and participating trust companies.

In Person at City Hall. Payments by cash, cheque (including post-dated cheques), debit or money order can be made during business hours, 8:30 to 4:30, Monday to Friday. Cheques can also be mailed or dropped off in the after-hours drop box at the main entrance doors.

You must apply for your Home Owners Grant each year, even if your taxes have been paid by your mortgage company, by preauthorized payment plan, at your bank or through online banking.

The application must be received by the due date of July 2 and is subject to penalty if received late.

Transportation Forum June 17

Water Conservation.

Over 100 residents attended the Transportation Forum on June 17 at the Heritage Hall. Attendees were able to ask questions of City staff and representatives from ICBC, CP Rail, Pitt Meadows Airport, Ridge Meadows RCMP, West Coast Express, ISL Engineering & Land Services Ltd, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

A short survey on transportation in Pitt Meadows is available on the City’s website at pittmeadows.bc.ca.

With the relatively dry winter and early warm weather, water conservation will be important this summer. Metro Vancouver has implemented lawn sprinkling restrictions Find out when your lawn sprinkling days and times are on the City’s website at pittmeadows.bc.ca.

Summer Events in Spirit Square.

Summer is a busy time in Spirit Square at the Civic Centre, beginning with Canada Day celebrations on July 1! On July 11, Parks & Leisure Services will be hosting “Movies in the Park” beginning at 8pm, featuring the movie “Peabody & Sherman.” The popular Bard on the Bandstand is back, with Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale,” on July 16, 17 and 18, beginning at 8pm. Council This Month Council Working For You. Council has been busy with several initiatives recently, including: • Mayor and Council were on hand at this year’s Pitt Meadows Day celebration on June 6. Council Members volunteered in various capacities throughout the day.

• Councillors Elkerton and Murray represented Pitt Meadows at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Conference held in Winnipeg June 3-6.

• The Citizen’s Committee on Open Government has wrapped up and will deliver a report of recommendations to Council on July 21.

• TheTransportation Forum was be held June 17 at Heritage Hall, and Council and staff addressed transporation questions from the public along with regional transportation partners.

Go Green Food is Banned From Garbage as of July 1.

The food waste in garbage ban will be enforced as of July 1 throughout Metro Vancouver. In Pitt Meadows, food waste has been part of the green waste cart curbside pickup since 2013. It’s librarian Susan Redmond’s favourite time of the year.

“I love the summer reading program,” she said.

Redmond works at the Pitt Meadows Library, and said the best part of the program – which kicked off on Pitt Meadows Day and runs through July and August – is seeing all the kids, parents, and others who come to the library to participate.

“It’s just wonderful,” she added. “Everyone who works here at the library really gets into it, as well.”

This year, the theme of the summer reading program is Build It!, and both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows libraries are offering a wide variety of opportunities to help readers of all ages build their imagination and interest in reading. The clubs are free to join.

Though the Build It! reading program covers the entire Fraser Valley Regional Library network, Redmond said the library in Pitt Meadows is doing something unique and adding something a little extra.

Pitt Meadows librarian Susan Redmond assisted a patron at the facility just off Harris Road recently. Redmond is encouraging all those in the community, regardless of age or skill level to get involved with a summer reading program.

Starting in July, the plan is to section off part of the Pitt Meadows Library as a “construction zone,” she elaborated. “The kids come in and get Zip-Loc bags that have construction material in them, and then what we’re going to do is encourage them to construct things in that area.”

She hopes some kids will leave their projects on display for the duration of the week for others to see, as well.

“In the entire Fraser Valley, we are the only Library doing these Build-It bags,” Redmond noted.

“Every time a child takes a book bag, they’re automatically entered in a draw for a book prize,” she said.

“We’re a small library, and we like to give lots of prizes.”

But the summer reading program is by

no means just for kids.

Categories of the club are designed to include everyone.

The Read-to-Me club encompasses “anyone from birth to kindergarten,” Redmond explained: “Then kindergarten kids and older do the regular summer reading program.” Participants get a reading record, special bookmark, weekly stickers, and chances to win other prizes.

Kids who complete their reading records also receive a medal.

The teen reading club – which includes kids in Grade 7 to 12 – is “prize-palooza,” said Redmond.

“They get tons of stuff,” she added.

For every seven days of reading, teens receive an entry into draws for things like iPad minis, and $100 gift cards for Chapters.

Adults can take their

reading levels to new heights as well, by joining the adult reading program.

Participants will receive a reading record, and every week have a chance to win prizes.

Prizes courtesy of local merchants in town can also be won.

“I call this a ‘multi-generational program’ and I think Fraser Valley Regional Library is really forward-thinking, because a program like this allows us to include everybody,” Redmond said.

The program caps the summer season with a wind-up party at the library, which takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and includes music and a medal ceremony.

Expressing thanks: During St. Patrick School’s recent parent appreciation tea, principal Clive Heah presented Sue Fleming with the school’s community award for her work with the Intergenerational Garden on Edge Street. According to Heah, St. Pat’s has been “privileged” to be part of the garden project since its inception two years ago. The Grade 7class at the time helped with the building of the flower beds. Fleming approached the staff and offered to provide students with garden space, in which they could grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables. It’s been a great learning tool, for which Heah is grateful.

Scholarships won: Five local Grade 12 students were the recent recipients of scholarships worth $1,000 each, courtesy of the local arts council.

Car given as dry grad prize: Mitchell Wellicome’s grad was memorable, for a whole bunch of reasons, including his good fortune in winning a car. The Westview Secondary grad recently accepted the keys to his new-to-him vehicle from West Coast Mazda sales manager Jean Sleiman (left). Each year the West Coast Auto Group donates a vehicle to one local high school for their dry grad. During the dry grad festivities for Westview, Wellicome’s name was drawn from the barrel at 5:30 in the morning. He couldn’t be happier, expressing his appreciation to his school and the car company. His post-secondary plans include obtaining an apprenticeship – possibly in welding, or some other hands-on trade – only partially joking that he hopes his Xbox skills will come in handy.

Proud grandma: Graduation day is unforgettable for Grade 12 students about to take the next step in their lives. But for Thomas Haney Secondary grad Nicholas Girard, it was an extra special day as he visited his grandma, Alba Mazzarolo, at her seniors care home in Port Coquitlam. Alba suffers from dementia and was unable to attend Nicholas’s graduation ceremony, so he paid her a visit dressed in his cap and gown. The two have been very close for all of Nicholas’s life. Their story was profiled [Lesson in compassion, June 4, The TIMES]. “It was a very touching moment,” said Nicholas’s mom Gisel. “They both hugged each other and started crying.”

I’ve been growing chives in a pot on the patio for many years. Every year it grows back – but not this year. Why? I watered it, gave it some liquid food to no avail.

When you say you watered your chives, I wonder how frequently that was.

This winter and spring, we had some very strange weather: torrential rain in bursts but also very long spells of warm, dry weather. The dry spells were in months when we wouldn’t expect this. All this was very tricky for plants in containers.

Containers do dry out frequently and when they ANNE MARRISON do are very hard to re-wet because the dry soil can shrink away from the inner sides of the pot.

You may drench the soil with water and think the plants are having a good drink, not knowing the water is running down the soil crack around the inside edges and away.

But it’s an odd problem. Chives have the reputation of being very hardy and healthy: no pests and the only disease is an occasional attack of rust which kills them if it’s let go for ages.

Anything with a fat root storage area (bulbs, tubers or taproot) is usually quite resilient even to drought. Chives don’t have the big bulb that other alliums do, but their root does have some storage capability.

It might be useful if you thoroughly dug up and removed the soil from the chives pot. Have a good look for little living creatures or anything that looks unusual. Discard that soil. There may be something to be learned here.

Jonas Falle has toured the world singing and paying tribute to Swedish supergroup ABBA, but on Friday night, he’s coming home.

Organizers say Canada Day celebrations are ‘shaping up well.’

A whole day’s worth of fun is on the docket and Canada Day in Pitt Meadows is “shaping up really well this year,” according to Zabrina Braithwaite, volunteer chair for Pitt Meadows Canada Day. “Our official Canada

Day in Pitt Meadows Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. sharp, where we will get to hear from many of our local dignitaries who will share a welcoming word with all of us,” she said.

Even before that, though, there will be a Lions Pancake breakfast beginning at 8 a.m., a one and two km run with Athletes In Kind (AIK) beginning at 8:30 a.m., children’s games and activities beginning at the same time, and the AIK eight km run starting at 9 a.m.

The day will also feature live music and entertainment, a watermelon eating contest, and prize draws, as well as a variety of local vendors on site.

“We do hope that everyone can come out to our Canada Day festival,” Braithwaite

said.

People are being encouraged to transit or ride their bikes to the event at Spirit Square, and Cap’s Westwood Cycle will have bike parking onsite as well.

Golf enthusiasts are invited to learn from professionals at an upcoming event.

If Pitt Meadows Golf Club members are among the best chippers and putters in Lower Mainland golf, there’s a reason.

They’ve been learning for three years from the masters of golf’s short game – Dave Stockton and his son, Dave Jr. The club is now inviting non-members to enter a draw to become one of 10 lucky guests at two clinics scheduled for Wednesday, July 16 at the Club, located at 13615 Harris Road in Pitt Meadows.

The Stocktons are famed for their own skills.

Dave Sr. is a five-time major winner on the PGA and Champions Tours as well as a Ryder Cup captain. He and Dave Jr. are especially well known for their expertise and specialized training programs in all aspects of the short game.

The two clinics, scheduled for 10:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., will take place at the club’s practice facilities which now include a new driving range.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 20, long before the sun began to rise, 120 cyclists and more than 60 volunteers left Kelowna and set out on the open road.

Their same-day destination? Delta, B.C., some 400 km away.

The formidable journey was part of the 11th annual Ride2Survive: a fundraiser for cancer research and a “grassroots community of B.C. riders and volunteers,” explained ride spokesman Michael Chiasson.

“One hundred per cent of the funds raised, go directly to cancer research,” stressed Chiasson.

During the ride, the cyclists climbed more than 12,000 feet, traversed two mountain summits, and pedaled more than 75,000 revolutions.

“The challenge is deliberately intimidating and designed to emulate the struggles, pain, doubt, and frustration that a cancer victim is often subjected to during their cancer battle,” said Chiasson. “ It underscores the need for a support system

of family and friends, otherwise the battle/ ride is insurmountable on our own.”

The group has traditionally made a stop in Maple Ridge, and this year was no different, with the cyclists rolling up to Planet Ice in the evening for a quick break before starting the home stretch to Delta.
