Hawaii Mars is ready for action KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Alberni Valley skies were filled with a familiar sight and roar this past weak as the Hawaii Mars took flight for the first time in almost two years. The iconic waterbomber flew

over the city and dropped water on the Alberni Inlet and Sproat Lake on Friday, ensuring that all systems were ready to go. All it needs now is a call to action— one that’s yet to materialize, according to provincial fire

information officer Navi Saini. “It has not flown any missions and it’s really hard to say when it wll be used,” Saini said on Tuesday morning. “It’s another tool in the toolbox in terms of airtanker support.” While the Mars

might still be sitting and awaiting orders at its Sproat Lake bomber base, it’s still costing the province. The Coulson Group signed a $450,000 30-day deal with the province with an option to extend for another 30 days. Those are just

standby costs; if the Mars flies under its provincial contract, that will cost the province another $11,000 per hour in fuel and flight costs. When that flight happens depends on a variety of factors, Saini said. Continued / A2
