A single vehicle crash claimed the life of an 18year-old Pitt Meadows girl on Tuesday night.

Just before 9 p.m., police were called to the 12700 block of Woolridge Road, where a Honda Civic with two occupants inside, had just gone into a water-filled ditch, and witnesses were frantically making attempts to get them out.

Ridge Meadows RCMP attended to the scene, along with members of the Pitt Meadows Fire Department, and BC Ambulance Services, and managed to get both girls out of the car.

Despite all efforts, the 18-year-old later died in hospital, with the 17-year-old suffering minor injuries.

“This is a truly tragic event,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Const.

It’s not a matter of if but when tragedy will strike, if drivers don’t start taking more care as they travel along 240th Street near Albion Elementary School.

That’s the opinion of a family living across the street from the school.

Andrew and Tammy Millar, whose seven-yearold son Jude attends Grade 1 at Albion Elementary, are concerned about the number of speeders and reckless drivers they’ve witnessed travelling through the 30 km/h school zone.

The Millars, who have lived in the area for roughly five years, have seen rapid development go up around them and with that, an increase in the number of cars on the road.

Tammy said twice in the last three weeks, as she was trying to cross 240th Street along a marked crosswalk, she’s nearly been struck by a car.

He also has many huge and very unique challenges.

He has low muscle tone throughout his body.

He cannot grab a toy without letting it go.

He plays with his iPad and toys that he can hit, but even this can be a challenge for him.

He has had two operations, one for his soft larynx which was so floppy, he could barely breathe and the other for a feeding tube that goes directly into his stomach since he had a hard time swallowing.

Nolin is constantly getting acid reflux and often projectile vomits. It is easy for him to aspirate, and he then develops mucous, which he again chokes on and puts his larynx into a spasm, which stops him from breathing. “We have had to do CPR on him a few times and almost lost him,� said his mom Darlene, who grew up in Maple Ridge and now calls nearby Stave Falls home with Nolin and husband Frank.

Stave Falls toddler Nolin Jutten is unable to walk, talk, eat, hold his head up, or see very well, and has seizures and other health issues. “In similar disorders there is not a very high life expectancy. That having said, since Nolin is the only one known in the world to have this, we really don’t have a prognosis, and hope for improvements in the future with new medications, and treatments,� Darlene added. “For now it is considered a palliative condition.

We hope that with the current research being done for this disorder will not only be able to help Nolin, but also children in the future who may get this genetic disorder.� n June 6, Frank and Darlene are hosting a fundraiser for their son at the Best Western ballroom in Mission.

Proceeds will go towards the many extra costs involved in caring for Nolin, such as a wheelchair van, renovations, ramps, and lifts.

There will be a full course buffet dinner and dance with live music by a six-piece traditional New Orleans-style jazz band called the Razzmajazz Ensemble.

Ridge man hit by train early Friday Mounties nab suspect Incident happened in the early hours of Friday, May 22.

A 19-year-old Maple Ridge man is in critical condition after he was struck by a train early in the morning this past Friday.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to the 12000 block of 201 Street at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Friday May 22,” said Insp. Dan Splinter.

A Mazda car was found in a yard after it had rolled over. There were no occupants inside the car, and all efforts to locate the driver were unsuccessful.

A search was carried out by general duty police officers, members of the Maple Ridge Fire Department, B.C. Ambulance paramedics, and Integrated Police Dog Services.

Just over an hour later, emergency services were called to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a train on 203rd Street just south of Hammond Road.

Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to a call from the Pitt Meadows Recreation Centre.

Maple Ridge Fire Department and B.C. Ambulance Service personnel had to extract the victim, and he was rushed to hospital with possibly life threatening injuries.

The victim is related to the owner of the car, but it’s not clear if he had been in the car at the time it rolled over or not.

Both matters are under investigation.

A man has been arrested after entering the women’s washroom at the Pitt Meadows Recreation Centre and looking at a young girl who was using the facilities.

“This incident occurred just before 4 p.m. in the afternoon of Friday May 8,” reported Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Amanda Harnett.

“The girl yelled at the man before she was able to get out of

the washroom and alert recreation centre staff to the incident.”

Youth workers then notified the RCMP Community Police Office of the incident, and the male was soon identified, Harnett added.

The suspect was arrested and local Crown Amanda Harnett counsel now has Ridge Meadows conduct of the RCMP file.

The suspect is scheduled to make his first appearance in court early next week.”

Caution issued Police remind parents about safety regarding small children and open windows.

On Wednesday May 20, Ridge Meadows RCMP, B.C. Ambulance Service, and Pitt Meadows Fire Department attended to a young child who had fallen outside of a residence through an open window.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported.

“Police are very thankful the child was not badly hurt, as the fall was very likely to have caused a very serious injury,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp.

“Police would like to remind parents of this danger, and in most cases this danger can be eliminated.”

Mounties remind residents: • if a window has to be Dan Splinter open, secure it so a child canRidge Meadows not fit through the opening; RCMP • having a screen in place will not support the weight of even a light child, so do not think that is a safety item; • remove all furniture from under windows where young children might climb up, including keeping beds away, as well; and • all curtain chords should not be reachable by a young child, so these should all be tied up, or put out of their reach.

Finally, police recommend parents take a periodic check of their homes to ensure all safety precautions have been taken.

“A moment of prevention can certainly go a long way in preventing a tragedy,” Splinter added.

A Friday noon rally was in opposition to the proposed Tantalus Labs medical marijuana greenhouse operation focused on water use.

According to the website WhonnockGrowOp.com, residents are not against medical marijuana, but are “against intensive agricultural land use next to our homes, in an area where our water is a constant concern.”

Concerns about water use drew a large crowd Friday, despite an independent hydrology report which confirmed the facility would not impact neighbouring water use.

“That report is publicly available at City Hall,” said Dan Sutton, managing director of the Tantalus Labs facility.

“We have worked hard to build a business, acting within the legal framework of the municipality of Maple Ridge, the province of B.C., the Agricultural Land Commission, and the federal laws of Canada,” he added.

Sutton said the facility aims to be a “beacon of environmentalism and stewardship.”

But the hydrology report hasn’t convinced some residents that the facility will fulfill Sutton’s promise.

The duo want the Grant Hill aquifer offered a degree of protection from the City of Maple Ridge.

The aquifer – which supplies water to Thornhill and Whonnock – is classified as highly vulnerable by the provincial government.

Tantalus Labs’ facility will tap into that aquifer, von Hardenberg said.

“This area has always been short on well water, so we need all the water we can get,” he added.

An operation like this is viable in Maple Ridge, von Hardenberg said, but “I just think they made a bad decision with this location.”

One Whonnock resident came to Friday’s gathering to show his support for the operation.

“There’s no reason it shouldn’t operate. It’s agri-

cultural land, and has always been advertised as such,” said Don Fisk, who added he lives “just across the road” from the site of the facility. “It was that 50 years ago when I moved here.”

Asked about concerns surrounding water supply issues, Fisk answered he didn’t share that concern.

“I don’t see it as any kind of problem,” he elaborated.

“There’s a stream close by, and there’s plenty of water for everybody.”

Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton also spoke at the rally.

“I’ve talked with the Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural Resources, there is a new act coming in: The Water Sustainability Act, coming in 2016.”

He assured residents that – under the new legislation – if the facility has an impact on the water table, it would have trouble receiving a water permit moving forward. > More at www.mrtimes.com, search “Tantalus”

BE WATER WISE Lawn Sprinkling Regulations effective June 1st – September 30, 2015 Starting in 2012, Metro Vancouver has restricted residential lawn sprinkling hours between June 1 and September 30 to 4:00 am to 9:00 am. This is the time when the least amount of water used on lawns will evaporate and the most is absorbed. Solution necessary

ast weekend, the Sasquatch! Music Festival took place in the state of Washington. The seas of tents from festival goers temporarily took over farmers’ fields at The Gorge Amphitheatre near Quincy, and the booze, pot and a multitude of other drugs flowed largely without oversight between the young people who shelled out hundreds of dollars to attend.

The camping was reminiscent of a more local tent city – one where free love and peace is not the overriding sentiment – but rather where desperation and a sense of helplessness festers.

As the homeless camp on Cliff Avenue continues to grow, so too does the frustration level of residents, who are appealing to all channels of government to find a solution to the issue.

The camp has taken steps to co-exist with area residents. Nightly security patrols were undertaken some campers, while some of the street population is making an effort to keep drugs out of the camp.

But there is a breaking point, and Cliff Avenue residents have reached theirs’ – last Wednesday, paramedics and the RCMP responded to an overdose on Cliff, leading to police and ambulances crowding the residential street.

Thankfully, the overdose wasn’t fatal, but the incident highlighted the urgent need for a better place for the camp.

The search for a comprehensive solution is admirable, yet the more the community delasy, the greater the chance that vitriol and frustration will replace the compassion necessary to solve the issue.

Mayor Nicole Read says moving the camps around every night is not a permanent solution – but the status quo only fosters a sense of frustration with the residents who need to be most engaged in a solution. Nobody should have to deal with cleaning up feces and urination on their property, and nobody should be denied the basic dignity of a bathroom.

Washington found ample space for 30,000 people to enjoy a festival – surely our community can find a better spot for 60 people who need our help.

Even with superior American financial resources at their disposal, scientists were not able to produce enough of the drug to build a statistically viable trial in humans.

A trial in macaque monkeys indicated substantial benefits, but subsequent treatment of seven humans (using up all of the available drug) only hinted at benefits.

It was simply too small a trial to be sure of the results, in any case.

On an interesting side note, the seven humans who were subjected to trial with

the anti-Ebola drug were American and European, while thousands of Africans were dying. I know what you’re thinking.

I thought that, too, at first.

Why didn’t they treat Africans with the small amount of drug they had available?

Damned Americans taking care of themselves again. But then I thought, what if they had tested it on Africans?

You can be sure the headlines would then have read, “Dying Africans used as guinea pigs in American drug trials.”

So now we Canadians are angry at Harper and the Americans for “stealing” drugs “we” developed while the Africans are angry that the Americans treated their own people first.

No good deed goes unpunished.

We Canadians should just be proud that our bio-weapons industry got the ball rolling.

That is, if any bio-weapons industry is something to be proud of.

Bing demonstrates ‘callousness’ with tweet Dear Editor, It is with utter disgust that I read a tweet by our Liberal MLA Doug Bing regarding the Maple Ridge-Mission Recall Campaign of Marc Dalton. Mr. Bing’s tweet read: “Hooray! Terrific news for Marc Dalton as recall campaign totally flops and petition is withdrawn.”

Did Mr. Bing even bother to look into why the campaign withdrew? Recall legislation makes it clear that the process requires there be one proponent who becomes the person in charge of the whole process.

In Maple Ridge/Mission, this person was Yvonne Hale who has had to travel back East as she is the sole family member of a relative who is terminally ill with cancer.

Yvonne has already been back East once but returned to try and deal with the intimidation tactics by Liberal observers during the campaign.

While canvassing continued both door to door and at booths by numerous volunteers, Elections BC would only speak to Yvonne regarding the complaints canvassers had regarding the behaviour of the observers.

The amount of responsibility put on the proponent in this process is daunting and while others tried to pick up the slack due to Yvonne’s unfortunate family situation, the rules in the legislation made it impossible to pass the torch.

I certainly hope Mr. Bing never has to leave his responsibilities to go deal with a

dying family member. If he did, I am sure he would expect the understanding of both his supporters and non-supporters.

Mr. Bing has demonstrated the callousness we have grown accustomed to from a government more concerned about privatizing the public sector and giving tax breaks to their corporate sponsors than to the public.

Your characterization of the campaign being a flop will be determined at the polls in the next election, Mr. Bing.

Your government demonstrates the same arrogance the Conservative party of Alberta demonstrated and we all know how that story ended.

Kindness was the theme of School District 42’s annual COR Day on Monday.

COR is an acronym for Celebration Of Respect, and most of the activities were centred around The ACT and the Greg Moore Youth Centre, as the district hosted elementary students from across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

During the day, students

participated in activities and workshops around a central theme.

The day about celebrating “the personal growth of the elementary school students we have been working with all year, as well as their fundraising effort, which is all being donated towards BC Children Hospital,” noted Olivia Leaf.

She is a Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary Grade 10 student who co-chairs the district Student Advisory Council.

“When our elementary school students are able to recognized within the community it often encourages them to come back again, or join our executive council,” Leaf added.

Thomas Haney Secondary Grade 8 student found mud electrifying and took home hardware from his visit to a national science fair in Fredericton, NB., earlier this month.

Fourteen-year-old Ben Chisholm represented Team Fraser Valley at the CanadaWide Science Fair (CWSF), where his experiment – which demonstrates that it is possible to change the electrical production of a microbial fuel cell by adding different additives to mud samples – received high marks.

“It was really good,” said Chisholm, who attended last year’s CWSF, as well.

“It was better this time. Last year I didn’t win anything and then this year I thought that my project was a notch up from last year, so I thought I had a chance of winning the bronze.”

Chisholm won a the medal for his experiment and with it, a $1,000 entrance scholarship to University of Western Ontario in London, Ont. There were 469 participants in the CWSF, and Chisholm’s project received an impressive 90 out of 100 grade.

Chishom qualified to go on an all-expenses paid trip to the CWSF by being one of three grand prize winners

at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair, held April 7 to 10 at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.

Joining Chisholm were Team Fraser Valley members Baneet Braich (Abbotsford Senior Secondary) and Daniel Kanis (Credo Christian School, Langley).

The CWSF from May 11 to 16 celebrated Canada’s brightest young minds while exploring science, technology, engineering, and math.

The national competition brought together

500 “young scientists” showcasing their real world solutions to some of the globe’s most important issues while competing for nearly $1,000,000 in awards, prizes, and scholarships.

He enjoyed his stay at the University of New Brunswick, and the CWSF as a whole.

During the week, Chisholm toured a chocolate factory, and took computer science workshops and an organic chemistry workshop.

“We were always doing something,” he said. “It was jampacked with activities.”

Chisholm, who hopes to earn a university science degree once he graduates from high school,

began researching for the project this past December, did the experiment in January, and took data for two weeks. egarding microbial fuel cells, Chisholm said, “It’s where bacteria in waste water… they can digest organic material and in the process they release electrons, and if you open them in an anaerobic environment, you can harness these electrons on an electrode, and then use these electrons as electricity in an external circuit.”

Chisholm plans to build on this year’s success. He can enter the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair and the CWSF up to his Grade 12 year.

It’s time now to plant snap beans like the popular ‘Blue Lake’ type or ‘Gold Rush’ or both green and yellow types for colourful salads. The purple-pod ones like ‘Royal Burgundy’ are pretty when growing but the pods turn green when cooked.

If you haven’t started potatoes yet, now is the time if you still hope to get a crop before blight hits. If it does, it’s best to remove the infested top growth immediately. Then, if you

quick to surge ahead on hot days that we don’t doubt crops will result.

Zucchinis are like this. In the open garden, seed emerges fastest on hills of soil.

The bush zucchinis grow nicely there as well as in large containers where slug protection is easier with copper mesh or tape than in the open garden. Also in pots, it’s easier to move zucchinis into a warm sunny spot. If you keep picking, production goes on till frost.

ritish Columbia is ramping up its efforts to help encourage the use of clean energy vehicles in the province.

The province has invested $10.6 million in Phase 2 of the Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) program, making electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles more affordable for people in B.C., while also helping to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

That includes a point-of-sale incentives program, which offers rebates of up to $5,000 for the purchase or lease of new battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and up to $6,000 for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. When combined with the B.C. SCRAP-IT program, total savings could be up to $8,250 for qualifying vehicles.

Funding has also been set aside for investments in charging and hydrogen fuelling infrastructure.

These are all good and important moves towards helping B.C. reduce its emissions, but more can and should be done. The time to capitalize on these measures is now.

At the New Car Dealers Association of B.C., we would like to see the province and municipalities give special treatment on our roadways to people driving CEVs. In particular, we’re in favour of giving CEVs full access to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

This added incentive – offered in a number of jurisdictions across North America - would provide encouragement and incite more initiative to adopt clean energy vehicles.

Road Closure at Cranberry Slough.

Beginning June 8 until June 29, Harris Road will be closed completely at Cranberry Slough to replace an old wooden bridge. The planned closure will take approximately three weeks and the structure will be replaced by a concrete box culvert. Road detours will be in effect until June 29. The forum takes place at Heritage Hall on Harris Road on June 17 with an open house from 6pm-8pm, including a presentation at 7pm.

An always-exciting cycling event will take over the streets of downtown Maple Ridge this weekend, May 29, 30, and 31.

And for the first time in its 13-year history, Race The Ridge will be hosting the BC Time Trial, Criterium and Road Race championships.

With the championship races on board, race organizer Barry Lyster brought on a new road and time trial course for the event.

“Being host to the BC Championships encouraged me to secure some new courses for this year’s event,” Lyster said.

“I partnered with the Phoenix Velo Cycling Club which will be the host club for the time trial in Abbotsford, while I resurrected the Hatzic Valley road course, an amazing 18-kilometre loop in the East Fraser Valley, which has been used in the past for BC Cup and BC Championship races.

Our Maple Ridge ‘Town Core Criterium’ has been a rider favourite, and we will be using this course for the BC Criterium Championships.”

The series is open to a wide range of categories including youth, masters, elite and novices.
