op music? Check. Perma-smile? Check. Enthusiastic dance moves? Check. It’s Justin’s checklist for work at Ming & Sing Chinese in Surrey. It’s what makes him impossible to miss to those in the neighbourhood and those whizzing down the highway. “I know what you like about your job, you like to dance,” Ron Doust says to Justin. “Yes,” he responds instantly, grinning from ear to ear as he nods and giggles, holding up his headphones. Doust is with Milieu Family Services, the agency that helped find Justin his job. Since June 2014, Justin has worked for the restaurant by advertising for them, standing on the corner of Highway 10 and 152nd Street during the lunch rush. The goal, of course, is to muster up business. But with his happy-go-lucky demeanour and sprightly dance moves,

Justin smiles and waves at passing cars during a recent lunch rush along Highway 10 in Surrey. (Photo: AMY REID) The program’s intake has grown by more than 80 per cent in the last year, she noted. In 2012, the Delta branch helped roughly 25 people, and the Fleetwood branch 35. Now, they serve roughly 160. “In the last 10 years… residential homes aren’t really opening anymore. People are able to live in more inclusive places and it’s a movement – this employment is a movement,” she said. “People are catching on and businesses want to be part of it.” Milieu works with a variety of companies – everything from construction sites to retail – and are always on the look out for more. Some current partners include Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, the Honeybee Centre and teen clothing store Triple Flip. Asked what Justin’s disability is, Doust and Distobel said they

don’t focus on the diagnosis. “A lot of people are tagged as autistic or developmentally this or that, but each person is so very different,” Destobel said. “It’s kind of meaningless. I couldn’t tell you what everybody’s disability is... we really look at each person as a person.” Destobel said many people the agency has served talk about how much they were bullied in high school. “They kind of carry that with them,” she said. “Coming here, they come in with that kind of self esteem. A job and the independence, then you create friends, and you’re seen as part of something. It’s life changing.” And Justin? Catch him Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. He’ll be there, smiling and dancing.

SURREY — A local advocate and author known for his work to empower people with disabilities is among the latest recipients of the Order of British Columbia. Allan B. Etmanski, co-founder of Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN), says he is honoured to be recognized for his work but says his passion stems from the selfless, caring people he works with – people he calls “passionate amateurs.” “I love being in the company of people who do what they do not because they’re paid to do it but because they care very deeply about an issue,” he said. Etmanski and his wife founded PLAN after his daughter was diagnosed with a disability. The focus of PLAN was to address the challenge of what happens to children with disabilities after their parents die. “Twenty-five years ago, when we started, this question wasn’t on the radar screen,” Etmanski said. “So we created a whole approach to supporting people with disabilities.” This isn’t the first time he has been recognized for his work. Along with his spouse Vickie Cammack, he was invested into the Order of Canada in February. “It’s completely satisfying,” he said. “It’s like I’ve died and gone to heaven or something. But I also know there are so many amazing people who do wonderful work in this area.”

Justin is mustering up a heck of a lot of smiles, too. “I asked him once when he was at it in the pouring rain, why he was so happy, and he said, ‘Because I like to dance and get paid for it,’” said Laila Yuile, a local blogger and columnist. “I see him often. He dances like this, rain or shine, and everyone who is a regular around here lights up.” Justin is just one of 158 people Milieu currently serves. Established in 1989 to provide supports for those with developmental disabilities, the company began around the time psychiatric hospital Woodlands closed, said employment manager Terri Destobel. Today, the agency focuses on connecting its clients with jobs that fit their strengths, among other things. It’s all about building independence and confidence, Destobel explained. “You feel like part of – and people see them as part of – contributing members of society.”

Bulging, Herniated or Worn Discs may be to Blame for Sciatica, Pain and Numbness in Legs Bulged Disc

] Did you know that over 30 million North Americans suffer from back and neck pain every day? Whether spine and back problems result from an auto accident, injury, or have crept up over time, sciatica and herniated discs are often misunderstood and improperly treated. They can result in pain and numbness anywhere in the body. This pain affects everything that you do, from work to play, and ultimately your quality of life. You might not even be able to sleep at night without pain. If you suffer from debilitating pain, we are here to tell you that there is hope. We have the technology and decades of experience to help you find relief from disc problems and sciatica. The Spinal Decompression Institute focuses on treating all disc and spine-related conditions with advanced non-surgical treatments. We are so confident that we can help you find relief that we are offering a complimentary consultation to the first 25 callers.

Spinal Decompression Allows Back Pain to Heal...Without Drugs or Surgery Decompression relieves pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves. The task of relieving pain comes about as a result of drawing the leaking gel of a herniated disc back into place. Decompression achieves this by creating

Herniated Disc Sciatica Pinched Nerves Stenosis

“For me, taking this program has been a huge success. I have my normal life back. The best part of it is to be able to say… I remember when I had a herniated disc.” — Bridget

negative pressure within the disc, referred to as negative intradiscal pressure. This creates essentially a vacuum to draw the bulging and herniated disc material back into the disc space and relieves pressure. This process of non-surgical decompression allows the body to heal itself naturally and is only one of many treatment options available at Spinal Decompression Institute.

Many spinal conditions can be treated, including pain due to bulging and herniated discs, degenerated discs, sciatica, low back pain, neck pain and much more. If you have chronic or severe back pain, you may be a candidate for spinal decompression treatment. At the Spinal Decompression Institute, we will evaluate your condition and only recommend treatment if it’s right for you.

Class IV Therapeutic Laser

Why The Spinal Decompression Institute?

The Spinal Decompression Institute employs a variety of high-tech solutions along with decades of experience to help alleviate your particular pain. Along with spinal decompression, our Class IV Therapeutic Laser Therapy is an outpatient, nonsurgical procedure which is often used in sports medicine to accelerate the healing process. This pain-free, non-surgical approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes, providing pain relief and reducing injury and damage. This leading-edge technology has shown results in returning patients to work, sports and competitive activities, as well as everyday life. Laser therapy is just one of the treatment options that Spinal Decompression Institute offers as a non-invasive option for those facing surgery.

Who is a Candidate for Spinal Decompression? With 7 out of 10 people experiencing low back and neck pain at some point in their lives and those types of pain being the most common reasons for patient visits to primary care physicians as well as hospitalization, there is no doubt that back and neck pain exists in epidemic proportions today.

The staff at the Spinal Decompression Institute has over 40 years of combined experience in treating patients suffering from back and neck problems. We offer a variety of treatment options for those dealing with back pain. We have helped thousands of people to live pain free!

Live Pain Free We will personally evaluate your condition and determine if our program will help you. It’s that simple! There are no strings attached and you have no obligation. ‘We can’t change their lives. But we can help.’ Forensic nurses play huge role as victims of violence rebuild their lives Tom Zytaruk

ometimes Lynn Gifford dreams about her patients. “I used to get angry a lot,” says Gifford, clinical co-ordinator of forensic nursing at Surrey Memorial Hospital. “At the world, and men, and just people in general – why do they have to treat each other this way?” But she realized being angry would not serve her patients well so she focused on just caring for them during their time together. “It is really important to focus on the moment that you are in. Sometimes it’s just a little bit of care, a little bit of compassion, a little bit of advocacy that will potentially enable that person to change their lives. We can’t change their lives. But we can help, we can support people.” Gifford leads a team of 20 forensic nurses at SMH’s emergency department. She’s been a nurse for 39 years and a forensic nurse since 2002. She grew up in Ontario, where her mom was a nurse. The nurses’ role is to help victims of violence of all ages. The patients come from across the Lower Mainland. A patient comes to emergency seeking treatment for a physical injury. If the wound appears suspicious, particularly in the case of a youngster, or if the patient reveals they’ve been abused, a forensic nurse will be called in. A woman arrives at the ER, saying she fell down some stairs. Her face, arms and stomach are bruised. Suspecting otherwise, the ER nurse discretely offers her the care of a forensic nurse, who discusses her options in privacy in a suite designed to make patients feel safe. The patient declines police involvement, explaining she’s economically dependent on her abusive partner. The nurse tells the woman she can return any time. “Sometimes people say no (to

(Photos: TOM ZYTARUK) telling police),” Gifford notes. “It is frustrating. That’s where it stays. The only person who really can report that to police is the victim.” It takes some women many visits to the emergency room before they have the courage or the support to be able to change their lives. “It’s always a little bit disheartening when it happens because we know people are still stuck in their cycle, their pattern. But we also know from a lot of scientific research that it takes women up to 10 times of seeking care from the police or the hospital to actually get ready and be able to leave a violent situation.” Men too. About five per cent of the forensic nurses’ patients are men but that number is slowly increasing. They now see as many as 10 annually, Gifford says. When the program started, they’d see maybe one or two each year. Currently, there are no male forensic nurses. Gifford says SMH doesn’t foist treatment on anyone who is uncomfortable. “Whatever the patient says that they need, or want, we have to try our very best to do that.” Trust, she notes, is a very fragile thing. “As we build the trust little by little, then when we get to the part of the examination that’s difficult and intrusive and invasive personally, there’s enough trust there that patients will be willing to

go as far as they need to go to collect the forensic evidence,” Gifford says. “It’s a very fragile thing because people come in with their trust gone. Their whole world has just been shattered; they don’t know any longer whom they can trust. I think of it sort of as a kind of spiritual wound. To me, it’s the most important thing to rebuild quickly because people have to go back out in the world and trust people. You can’t walk around not trusting anybody.”

VITAL ROLE IN COURT Besides caring directly for patients, and gathering specimens when required, forensic nurses are called to testify in court. Gifford has done so many times. “Ultimately, we are collecting forensic evidence for lawyers and police.” Surrey Crown prosecutor Winston Sayson recalls a highprofile case where the accused pleaded guilty at the last minute. Sayson suspects the work of a forensic nurse, who meticulously documented 29 injuries, played a critical role in that. “I believe it was a key factor in the accused pleading guilty at the last minute,” Sayson says. “Powerful objective medical evidence.” Surrey practicum teacher Michael Edward Herrera was sentenced in 2013 to 26 months in prison for luring a Surrey high school student into a perverse

their home and they’re protected in their home, and their parents are providing the support and safety that’s important, there’s an Infant Act that protects a child’s access to health care. So if the child comes at 12 and says, ‘Yeah, that happened and no, my parents don’t know but I’m safe at home,’ we have to not tell. And that can be really challenging.” The best part of Gifford’s job is seeing victims begin to heal. “If we do our jobs well, they walk out having made the first one or two steps they need to make to begin to heal.” The worst part is dealing with a patient who rejects help. “You just get this sinking feeling knowing that they are going to get hurt again, and they’re going to be back. It’s kind of a sad part of life for everybody, but we are the only ones that can fix our lives. We are all the masters of our own lives.”

‘AN INQUISITIVE MIND’

“master-slave” sexual relationship. A forensic nurse found 29 bruises and abrasions on the girl’s body. Sayson says the nurses are professional, neutral and “very thorough.” “Unfortunately other communities don’t have this,” he adds. Northern B.C., for example. Gifford said forensic nurses see a couple patients per day in Surrey and Abbotsford. There is a nurse on call at all times. Patients younger than two are referred to pediatric specialists. For older children deemed vulnerable, a social worker is brought in. If the alleged abuser is an authority figure, police are alerted. There are exceptions. For example, a 12-year-old might say she was at a party and something bad happened but she doesn’t want anyone to know, not even her parents. “If we feel that the child is safe in

Forensic nursing is not yet recognized as a specialization in Canada. One can earn a PhD in the field in the U.S., but not yet here. Newton resident Sheila Early, a pioneer of forensic nursing in B.C., co-founded the Forensic Nurses Society of Canada in 2007. Early began her nursing career in Saskatoon in 1968. She noticed over the decades that nursing, when it came to victims of sexual violence, hadn’t progressed. “I wanted to make a difference.” So she set about developing Surrey’s program in the early 1990s. “I did the leg work, if you want.” Early made 28 court appearances as a forensic nurse. She left SMH in 2007 and today teaches forensic nursing through the British Columbia Institute of Technology, where she’s received a teaching excellence award. Are the best forensic nurses trained, or born? “A little bit of both,” Early says. “You need an inquisitive mind. Every forensic nurse is a very good fact witness.” For victims of sexual assault, she has this to say. “Life will not be the same, but it doesn’t mean it can’t be good again.” tom.zytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Trees make news for a reason

HIT: Delta is replacing its Tree Cutting Regulation Bylaw with a new one that will see more trees preserved within the municipality’s boundaries (see story on page 16).

ou’ll be reading a lot about trees in this issue of the Now. You’ll read about Delta working to increase its stock of trees (page 16), while Surrey will be chopping them down in Green Timbers for a light rail transit line (page 13). Its municipal council has adopted an urban reforestation program that aims to see 1,150 trees planted in Delta within the next year, with some of those to be planted along Nordel Way. Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, noted that a single tree can on average remove 10 pounds of pollutants each year by absorbing particulates and gases from the air, and two mature trees can provide enough oxygen for one person every year. Delta deserves plenty of “huzzahs.” And then we have Surrey. While we applaud the news from Linda Hepner’s State of the City Address that treeplanting work will double over the next four years – from 2,500 trees a year to 5,000 – we are troubled by the fact that Surrey cannot yet account for the number of trees to be felled in Green Timbers to make way for light rail transit and the widening of Fraser Highway. We urge the City of Surrey to give careful consideration to each and every tree rather than obtusely cut great wide swaths through this important forest. The Now

Their food seems to be only thing that’s fast SoLetItBeDone Tom Zytaruk

So let it be written... I’ve experienced bowel disruption after eating at McDonald’s but I never imagined a trip to the golden arches would take out my car’s exhaust system. So here’s my story. I was preparing to exit the restaurant at 13565-72nd Ave. – slowly, I might add – when my tire slipped into this little canyon at the end of their drive-thru. My coffee, which had been in one of those cardboard trays they provide, toppled over, making

for an ugly brown stain on the passenger-side carpet of my car. But it was the underside that really took the brunt. Fortunately, McDonald’s immediate neighbour is Budget Brake & Muffler. It cost me $88.68 to get my muffler strapped back into place, and another $224.62 for more work done on the front pipe. They were fast and courteous. McDonald’s has also been courteous so far, but in a donothing kind of way. I lodged my complaint at the counter of this particular McDonald’s with a busy young woman with long blonde hair who, after taking a photo of the hole, assured me I would be hearing from someone at the corporate level who handles this sort of thing. So far, I’ve been through this

manager, twice, as well as an Inder and an Amid, also from this particular outlet. I’m still awaiting my phone call from this promised magic corporate person who, I fully expect, will at least pretend to care about the inconvenience McDonald’s has put me through and the $313.30 in damage its pothole did to my car. The incident happened May 8. Twenty-seven days have passed, and still no phone call, or email, even. Clearly, they care not a whit. McDonald’s is Rhett Butler to my Scarlett O’Hara. I have to say, for a restaurant chain that prides itself on fast service, they sure suck in this case. As I write this, I recall that 1993 Michael Douglas movie, Falling Down, about a guy who goes street bonkers because everything

surrounding him doesn’t work and everyone around him is perfectly apathetic about the rampant dysfunction. I’m not quite there. Yet. But I find myself getting increasingly verklempt about things like hitting potholes, eternally being put on hold and just generally being treated like a shmo by people who otherwise want my money. You’ll find on the facing page a regular feature called Roses and Rotten Tomatoes. So if you’re tired of potholes, and being treated like a shmo, drop us a line. Howard Beale would be proud that you did, and so will I. ...So let it be done. Tom Zytaruk can be reached at tom. zytaruk@thenownewspaper.com.

Barking dogs in a family neighbourhood? Go figure. The Editor, I have been hearing and reading a lot of stories about barking dogs in Surrey that cause disturbances in neighbourhoods. I’d like to offer a word of advice to those who waste time and energy complaining about barking dogs. Reality check – you don’t get to choose your neighbours. If you choose to live in an area that’s chock full of dogs or close to schools where lots of children play, that’s your problem. Confronting the dog owners isn’t a wise choice, as it can often be a risky situation. Your best bet is to call the city bylaw department and let them handle complaints. There are people in the world with real problems. Barking dogs are not one of them.

Socially speaking

The Editor, Re: “Forget Hepner’s grandiose plans – solution is cameras,” the Now letters, May 28. We live in a good family-oriented neighbourhood in Newton area. In the past two years, we had our car broken into and the second time the police officer that came in did what he could. I know we are quick to judge and say that police aren’t doing their job. Basically, we all know our justice system isn’t that great when it comes to punishing criminials. However, I spoke with the police officer and he said they deal with all types of criminals every day – and what happens? They take them in and they’re out the next day. Why is it this way? Because our justice system is too easy going. I think more cameras over the city would be great, especially in light of the recent spree of shootings and violence in Surrey. We have privacy at home and when we are in public, we should not expect privacy. Besides, if you’re doing no wrong, why be worried? We need action – not finger-pointing, especially when those fingers are pointed at the police. They are doing their job .

❚ Rotten tomatoes to the person on the 323 Newton Exchange bus who told an innocent guy to get lost and sit somewhere else. Who are you to tell people where to sit? It’s not your public transit and, on the other hand, you don’t own it! If it bothers you so much, take a taxi and sit by yourself.

❚ Rotten tomatoes to those who text while riding their bicycles, in heavy traffic yet. Are you, like, insane? Better rotten tomatoes than tombstones. Smarten up!

❚ Rotten tomatoes to the City of Surrey for not having all parks in Surrey patrolled. Newton is getting all the attention. Try going down to the Bridgeview fishing dock at the foot of 130th Street. There is constant drug dealing and drug use down there, along with drinking and fires all the time. Dogs are never on a leash and there is all kinds of illegal dumping there, too. How about cleaning up that place so it is safe to go there and fish?

❚ Rotten tomatoes to the unwelcome stranger who snooped in our building and spied on our neighbours. Congratulations buddy, you have been reported to the police.

❚ A classroom full of rotten tomatoes to the Surrey school board for its latest cost-cutting bombshell. It targets the most vulnerable and needy students. These students will be subjected to a severe reduction in the number of education assistants available to serve their special needs, thus greatly reducing the chance of achieving any life skills or exposure to receiving the maximum education they are capable of. We must stand up for the rights of those that can’t stand up for themselves! ❚ Rotten tomatoes out to the irresponsible woman who was letting her screaming baby cry on the bus. You’re not the only one using transit, you know?

❚ Rotten tomatoes to my wife’s budgies. They won’t shut up, not for a second. Driving me nuts.

❚ Rotten tomatoes to the blonde female cop driving a dark grey ‘ghost car’ minivan who had her cellphone up to her ear and was paying more attention to her computer console than the road. I guess distracted driving is only dangerous if you don’t have a badge. Unbelievable. ❚ Rotten tomatoes to you irresponsible dog owners who are always losing your dogs, allowing them to get loose and terrorize the neighbourhood by chasing other dogs and cats. ❚ Rotten tomatoes to our neighbours, who let their dog out on their sundeck and let him/her bark all day at everything that moves. Your dog has been barking since 7 a.m. this Sunday morning and it is now 10 a.m. Do you not hear him/her? You need to either keep him inside or teach him not to bark at everything that moves. How about having some respect and courtesy for neighbours who just want to get caught up with their sleep?

ow would you like to pay for that? Debit, credit or Bitcoin? It’s a question shoppers at a few spots in Surrey will be asked after two local shops brought in Bitcoin payment last week – the SFU Surrey bookstore and Waves Coffee House in Whalley next to Gateway SkyTrain. SFU is the first Canadian university to accept the cryptocurrency as payment in its bookstores. It is also the first to install Bitcoin vending machines campus-wide. Michael Yeung founded the SFU Bitcoin club in 2013. He said there are a lot of students on campus who have Bitcoin and know quite a bit about it. “This kind of brings them out of hiding,” he said, adding Bitcoin will benefit SFU as well. “It will help bring (SFU) to the forefront of cutting-edge technology.” So if someone walked into the bookstore and purchased Bitcoin, they could instantly spend it for goods, but would it end up

costing more or less than paying cash? “It depends on the market,” said Yeung. “It could go up in the next hour or it could go down. It’s kind of like the U.S. dollar. But in the last six months it’s been really stable.” Mark McLaughlin, SFU’s executive director of ancillary services, said it’s not really about Bitcoin, it’s about the dialogue. “We want students to try it out, talk about it, learn about it and kick the tires, so to speak, and then they can form their own opinions.” Whalley coffee shop Waves launched Bitcoin payment and installed an ATM on May 29. Several of the company’s Vancouver locations already do the same. Drew Glover is co-founder of BitNational, a Calgary-based company that creates Bitcoin ATMs. They have 72 in Canada. The company helped launch the cryptocurrency at the Surrey Waves and Glover said Bitcoin has been gaining legitimacy in recent years as the New York Stock Exchange and others have jumped into the mix. Both men ran straight into a police officer who was in the area on another matter. “This was a total fluke,” Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said. “It’s Whalley - there’s cops everywhere,”

COMMISSION APPOINTMENT

SURREY/DELTA — Surrey and Delta have both issued bans on outdoor burning given recent dry weather. The bans have come early this year, triggered by the Coastal Fire Centre recently issuing a Category 2 fire ban for B.C.’s coast, and Surrey firefighters responding to 86 brush fires since May 1. Surrey issued its ban on Monday, with no expiry date forecast. Last year’s extended into October. Until further notice, Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis has cancelled all burning permits and is prohibiting all types of outdoor fires, including charcoal barbecues in city parks and on Surrey’s beaches. Propane barbecues are still permitted. Also, Surrey’s fire department is asking residents to properly dispose of bottles and broken glass found outdoors to prevent them from magnifying the sun’s rays and starting a fire. Delta’s open fire ban was issued despite the municipality’s website indicating Delta’s present fire danger rating is low. Existing fire permits have been cancelled for burning agriculture land waste and new ones won’t be issued until the ban is lifted. Backyard burning, campfires and outdoor cooking fires are currently banned in Delta.

PANORAMA RIDGE — The cello is taking Trisha Doo around the globe. The Surrey teen has already performed at New York’s fabled Carnegie Hall, and she’ll be off to Hong Kong and Ohio to continue her musical studies later this year. Doo, 18, is currently a standout pupil of Vancouver Academy of Music’s Rising Star mentorship program. At the facility’s recital hall Sunday evening (June 7, 7 p.m.), Doo and another prodigy, violinist Esther Hwang, have been selected as guest performers with the Koerner Quartet in a season-ending “Summer Serenade” concert. “It’s nice to be noticed like this,” Doo said, “and people are so encouraging and supportive of my dream, helping me to be my best. GO! Music

A mighty ‘Purple Haze’ moves a once-shy musician Now staff Twitter @tomzillich

EWTON — Guitar at his side, Ranj Singh sat there “sweating bullets” as he watched a stream of fellow musicians take to the stage, one after the other. It was yet another open-mic night and, rather than confidently showcase the songs he’d written, Singh was too nervous to perform for an audience. Once again, he’d signed up to sing and strum, but bolted for the door just before his name was called by the event host. “From 2001 to 2006, I probably went to over 200 open-mics and never played a single one of them,” explained Singh with a sigh. “I went to them to play, but I just couldn’t do it. I’d need alcohol to even think about going on stage.” Stage fright was nothing new for Singh, who toured with Dal Dil Vog for most of the 1990s. The popular bhangra-rock band also

involved four of his brothers; Singh had written songs since he was a kid growing up on his family’s Cloverdale-area farm, but he always felt most comfortable standing in the shadows, not the spotlight. “I was always the scared guy in the background,” Singh revealed as he sipped tea one afternoon at Bistro 72 in Newton. “I always had a passion for music but I never had the guts to perform on my own. And then when we (Dal Dil Vog) ended that magical ride we were on, I quit playing music and went full-time with the job I’ve had for 16 years now. I sank into that – family first.” A reliable vehicle is crucial for Singh in his work as a courier, a job that has him driving thousands of kilometres each month. Since the start of his post-band career, he’s been a Honda Civic guy. He’s owned three of them, and the most recent, a 1999 model, was purchased used 10 years ago. “It already had 100,000 clicks on it,” Singh said. “Now it has

(Photo: TOM ZILLICH) more than a million and it’s still running fine.” These days, his “Purple Haze” car is also used to get Singh from gig to gig, now that he’s dealt with his stage fright. It wasn’t easy.

One night back in 2006, Singh went to an open-mic in Maple Ridge. He was just about to again “run away” from performing but the event host convinced him to come back the following week. Singh did, this time with a musical

partner, and he never looked back. “That was the first time I’d played in public like that, my songs,” he recalled. “I got through it eventually but it took a long time.” With a pair of CDs recorded since then, Singh is now happy and confident to perform music that combines Indian rhythms and melodies with a folk-rock vibe. His first album, the 11-song Simple Man disc, was produced by Wyckham Porteous, and the second, Found a Way Home, was recorded in 2011 with The Discriminators, the band Singh put together for a series of key shows during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. “We got to play seven hockey games, after an audition and all that,” Singh said with a smile. “That was just great, and we got to watch the games afterward, too, in the holding area for people just before they entered the rink. And then I was getting messages from people around the world – Latvia, see › page 23

I still get nervous, the butterflies, adrenaline, but now I’m having the time of my life, so happy with how things have gone.” As for his beloved car, “Purple Haze” is clicking along with 1.145

GO! Three Things to Do This Week

Food trucks, vendors, local artisans and entertainers will fill the plaza at city hall during Surrey Urban Farmers Market events this summer, with a seasonopening celebration planned for June 10. Musician Braden Daniel will be on the Market Beets Stage, and close to 30 vendors will be open for business. For 2015, until the first week of October, the Wednesdayafternoon market (1 to 6 p.m.) will put an emphasis on health and sustainability, with special “Wellness Wednesday” events held once a month (starting June 17) along

Surrey: 2 locations 10 other locations in Lower Mainland (see website for details)

with three Sustainability Fairs (first on July 15). For market updates, call 778-228FARM (3276) or visit Surreymarket.org.

Speaking of food, another Surrey Greek Food Festival gets going Friday (June 5) at the Greek Orthodox church located at the corner of 132nd Street and 96th Avenue – a place for platefuls of souvlaki, roasted lamb, baklava, bougatsa and more. The church parking lot is the place to be for Greek music and dancing, too, from June 5 to 14 (Monday to Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.). Parking is a bit of a headache in the area, so watch for no-parking signs and avoid a ticket. Check it out at Facebook.

Need a shiny car for your presummer cruising this weekend? Consider bringing your ride to a special car wash fundraiser for earthquakerelief efforts in Nepal, on Sunday (June 7) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mohawk station at 15970 96th Ave., Surrey. The event is hosted by SOAR Philanthropic Society, a student-run scholarship committee (the acronym stands for Success, Opportunity, Achievement, Results, online at Soarps.org). The SOAR team believes “the citizens of Surrey and Delta will come out and support this cause in giving back to the global community.” Tom Zillich

t is a real treat to have hit Vancouver shows come out to Surrey Arts Centre. No bridge tolls and free parking are just icing on the cake. You have until June 16 to get in on the early-bird pricing for The Arts Club on Tour season at the SAC for next year. Subscribers get a lot of perks, like up to 27 per cent off the cost of a single ticket and the right to snap up the best seats. The three shows this coming season, starting in October and closing next February, are Dean Regan’s Red Rock Diner (“Vancouver’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Musical”), Lucia Frangione’s In A Blue Moon (“Finding Home in Unexpected Places”) and Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles (“An Uplifting Story of Growing Up and Growing Old”). Red Rock Diner first came to Surrey in 1998, and a young Michael Bublé was part of the ensemble cast. Everyone loves this Red Robinson show, and perhaps SAC doesn’t have to offer free chocolate to subscribers during the performance of this show. For lots more information, show times and ticket purchases, visit the Surrey Arts Centre online – a really good, interactive website. And while you are there, check out the junior musical theatre summer camp. This is a fantastic program for kids who see musical theatre performances in their future. Developed by Peter Jorgensen in partnership with the Arts Club, this is one of the very best triple-threat theatre camps around. Kids aged 12 to 16 can apply, but you must have some music, singing and dancing in your background. This is not an introductory

Surrey’s Adam Svensson falls short of first pro win in Canada VANCOUVER — Surrey golfer Adam Svensson fell just shy of earning top prize at the PGA TOUR Canada’s 2015 opening event at Point Grey Golf & Country Club on Sunday (May 30). American Drew Weaver won the tournament over Svensson on the third playoff hole at the Vancouver course, after five

golfers finished regulation in a five-way tie (-12). Ross Beal, Riley Wheeldon and Taylor Pendrith were all eliminated from contention after the second playoff hole, leaving Svensson and Weaver as the last men standing. On the third playoff hole, Svensson missed a six-foot putt, giving Weaver the title and the $31,500 winner’s cheque.

Svensson was looking for his first professional win in Canada. “Weaver made some nice putts on top of me,” Svensson told Inside Golf. “I had fun, I’m not too disappointed. I thought that putt was in. I thought I hit a good putt, but it just missed.” Svensson was on the way to victory, sitting

at (-13) after the ninth hole, but after hitting his drive left and then trying to hit a heroic second that stayed in the trees, he finally pitched out on his third and made double bogey, according to a report on Inside Golf. “The shot on number 10 kind of cost me the tournament,” Svensson said. We’re giving away money at our Grand Opening. And we know just the place you can keep it.

New cross-border foe for hockey’s Surrey Eagles Surrey Eagles will be doing at least one “roadsie” to central Washington State next season. The Wenatchee Wild will join the BCHL as its 17th franchise starting with the 2015-16 season, the team and league announced Monday (June 1) at a media conference. As a U.S.-based club, the Wild will be allowed to roster a maximum of four Canadian players, league officials said. The Wild will become the first U.S.-based franchise in the BCHL since the Bellingham Ice Hawks, which operated from 1990 to 1995. “The BCHL is gaining a strong franchise in the Wenatchee Wild and we value the passion and professionalism they bring to our league,” said BCHL commissioner John Grisdale. “The Wild will quickly develop rivalries with our existing franchises and I believe they will be a big draw in opposing buildings.” In the BCHL full-interlock schedule, all teams play a home-and-home series with each of the other teams. The Wild had been a member the North American Hockey League (NAHL) since the 2008-09 season. Playing out of Wenatchee’s Town Toyota Center, the team averages about 3,000 fans at home games. Fraser Heights team wins another provincial title, ties tourney record Tom Zillich Now staff Twitter @tomzillich

SURREY — A powerhouse Fraser Heights Firehawks badminton team brought gold home from Kamloops over the weekend. In a 16-team tournament, the 16-member coed squad earned a provincial high school

title for the second straight year. In the best-of-11 final round of team play, the Firehawks downed St. George’s/ Crofton House by a score of 8-3, capping an impressive 59-7 record for Fraser Heights in the three-day tourney. The team’s win-loss record tied an alltime tournament record set in 1999 by H.J. Cambie.

“This could be the greatest single team performance in provincial badminton history,” coach David Dryen told the Now. “This week capped off what I would label the ‘perfect season,’ going undefeated in league play, team tournaments, zone playoffs, and now the provincials,” Dryen added. “And with the majority of players graduating this year, it was an emotional win

for everyone. This year and this team will never be forgotten.” In badminton, it was the fifth medal for Fraser Heights in the past six years – bronze in 2010, gold in 2012, silver in 2013, gold in 2014 and gold in 2015. SEE PHOTOS ONLINE AT THENOWNEWSPAPER.COM

FR-S

Plenty of thrills in a compact sportscar BY BRENDAN McALEER

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com

•

Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer

We’re all up to our eyeballs in horsepower these days. It’s a rising tide that floats all boats, from the gong-show insanity of the Dodge Hellcat twins, to the capability of your average V6 family sedan to outmuscle a mid-80s Ferrari. Happily, speed limits have been raised to accommodate all the fresh new ponies prancing under our right foot. Oh wait, no they haven’t. There’s been a 10km/h bump on some rural highways in this province, but for the most part you can sneeze at a gas pedal and be watching your car get flat-decked away by the RCMP five minutes later. But what if fun wasn’t so much about the fast and furious side of things, but about that seat-of-yourpants scoot you get in a lightweight sportscar? What about something that’s quick enough to be fun without being fast enough to be a liability? Well here it is then, the Scion FR-S.

Design:

A joint venture between Subaru and Toyota, the Scion FR-S is basically identical to the Subaru BR-Z; this latter is a bit more expensive and has slightly less aggressive suspension tuning. I’ve always felt the Scion version to be slightly better looking than the Subaru, wearing its distinctly Japanese styling well. The factory-sized 17” alloys look right sized for the car, although there’s a large aftermarket these days to swap them out for something lighter, perhaps shod with grippier rubber. However, as it stands, it’s a balanced shape.

Rather famously, the FR-S comes wearing a set of low-rolling resistance tires found as the upgrade on the Japanesemarket Prius. A Prius? That’s right: it’s not important to offer brain-bending levels of grip. Instead, you want predictive handling and perhaps a tendency to slide out a little.

Fog lights are a dealer-installed accessory, and you can also order your FR-S with a TRD exhaust for a bit more rasp out the back. However, in factory-spec form, it’s already pretty much got everything it needs.

Environment:

The most direct competitor for the FR-S is perhaps the Mazda Miata, but the Scion has a few advantages for practicality-minded folks. For one thing, it’s a 2+2, which means booster seats fit in the back, or a couple of cramped adult passengers in a (literal) pinch. A rear-facing child seat can be crammed in there, but only if the person riding in the passenger seat is Bilbo Baggins. The general feel of the materials in the FR-S is just as with other members of the Scion range: inexpensive but durable. The seats are great, as is the steering wheel and shifter, and everything else is just, well, there. There’s a little extra padding where you might knock a knee against something during hard cornering, but the overall impression is that the primary focus of this car is driving, not comfort.

Here the FR-S is a relative delight. Early versions of the cars are a hooligan’s plaything, but you can’t go around all day hanging the tail out in front of Jonny Law. The FR-S now turns in with aplomb and then zings through the corner with a light and nimble feel. The wetter the roads, the better, and up in the mountains of the North Shore, the little Scion was much more fun than some hugely capable and powerful all-wheel-drive twin-turbo Audi might be. There are a few drawbacks to consider if this is your only car. It’s quite loud as a highway cruiser, and while the suspension isn’t overly stiff by sportscar standards, a lengthy road-trip isn’t something to be embarked upon lightly.

However, it should also be mentioned that the rear seats fold down, making the trunk just large enough to carry four extra tires (to a track day or similar). That gives the FR-S just a little extra usability, which is handy if it’s your only car.

Still, slicing through the fog and rain at the top of Mount Seymour was never so much fun – and it didn’t even involve being a total miscreant. Mission accomplished, little car.

Performance:

Apart from the optional premium audio and satellite navigation, the FR-S comes relatively well-equipped as its base model. The touchscreen navigation is nothing to write home about, so you’d be better off just getting a secure attachment for your smartphone.

Under the hood is an odd hybrid of an engine: a Subaru 2.0L flat-four combined with Toyota’s direct-injection system. It makes 200hp at 7,000rpm and 151lb/ft of torque between 6,400 and 6,600rpm. That’s not a lot, and when it comes to the torque output, that’s really not a lot. 200hp seems respectable on the surface next to hot hatches like the Ford Fiesta ST, but you really have to wind out the FR-S’s four-banger to its absolute limit to access that power. However, there is sufficient power here to have a good time as it’s not about the straight-line speed at all, but about what happens when you start pushing the FR-S through a few corners. For 2015, Scion has tamed the FR-S’s pervious tendency to be a bit tail-happy, but it’s all for the better.

Features:

Premium is required and official fuel economy is rated at 10.9L/100kms city and 7.9L/100kms on the highway. Observed fuel economy for mixed driving was right at 10L/100kms, very good for spirited driving.

Green Light:

Grippy seats; light and nimble feel; surprisingly usable for small space

Stop Sign:

Bare bones interior; engine lacks grunt; noisy cabin at speed

The Checkered Flag:

Plenty of thrills in a compact sportscar that’s still practical enough for every day.

Warmer days are perfect for going out for some exercise! Does your canine friend get sore paws from those long walks or hikes over rockier terrain? Condition and strengthen them with regular use of “Pad Heal”. It helps to maintain the flexibility in the pads of the feet to resist soreness and tearing. The Vaccination Question--- How often? — Cloverdale Pharmasave

Why swim your dog indoors? As our communities grow, finding safe, clean outdoor water for our dogs to swim in becomes harder. Water contamination, fishing hooks, currents, unruly dogs and cold temperatures in lakes and rivers can cause problems and even veterinary bills for you. Indoor swimming is sanitized, safe and carefully controlled to protect your dog. Any age and any stage in life, indoor swimming benefits your dog.

Vaccines play a critical role in preventing, controlling and eliminating disease in dogs and cats but based on current findings a new generation of vaccination guidelines has emerged. The duration of immunity for most clinically significant vaccines is at least 3 years and probably more than five. — Harmony Veterinary Home Care

CCR: It’s never too late to have a “good dog”! With positive reinforcement training, even old dogs can learn new tricks (and behaviours!) Positively teaching a dog to do something because they want to, rather than because they are forced to is the path to a happy, well balanced, well behaved dog.

— K9H20

Daily teeth brushing and regular cleanings are a great way to maintain your dogs oral health. We love coconut oil as a natural toothpaste and your dog should love it too! Don’t forget regular vet check ups as well to ensure your doggies dental health is at its best!

— Petsearchers Canada/Country Canine Retreat

Tips to help your furkid live longer Some things are genetic, of that there is no doubt...there are many things we can do, however, to battle those genes and help our fur kids live a longer life. 1. Make nutrition the foundation for good health. Feed real, fresh food and make sure it is balanced. 2. Ensure the right amount of exercise...not too much and definitely not too little! 3. Avoid over-vaccination. Find a veterinary clinic that offers titer tests to check antibodies as many vaccines protect for a lifetime! 4. Care for your pets teeth...dental hygiene is essential for good health! 5. Maintain optimal weight...extra pounds stress the heart and contribute to many illnesses. — The Bone and Biscuit Co.

Regular check ups are vital. One year for dog / cat is close to 7 year for human. Early detection of illnesses means we can apply appropiate treatments and result in extending the life of your pets. It is one of the most important ways to keep your pet healthy. Nutrition, weight control, parasite control, health screenings should be discussed during your visit to your family veterinarian. Focused walking is a fantastic way to build your relationship: 1. Set time goals, not distance, so you can focus on proper behaviour 2. Praise Fido when he is in the right position and stop moving when he’s not 3. Teach what a leashed walk is indoors without distraction before trying it in neighborhood. — AKAK9
