1858:

1868:

Aboriginal settlers visit these lands on a seasonal basis, eventually becoming permanent inhabitants.

Nicknamed “Isla Capeda” (Capeda Island) by Spanish explorer Lieutenant Francisco Eliza, the future Delta area is discovered by Europeans.

With a gold rush happening across B.C., settlers make their way to Delta to find their fortunes.

Returning to the fertile soils of the Delta region the Ladner brothers, Thomas Ellis and William Henry, begin their agricultural pursuits.

Great Golf Six stellar courses await you in Delta, making it the perfect spot for your golf “destination vacation”: > King’s Links by the Sea: the Lower Mainland’s only “British-style” fairway. 604.952.0999 > Cove Links: an executive nine-hole course featuring lush greens. 604.946.1839 > Delta Golf Club: boasts a friendly atmosphere and unique design. 604.594.1414 > Sunshine Woods Golf Centre: 18 holes of family fun. 604.596.0533 > Tsawwassen Springs Golf: majestic views and wildlife sightings. 604.943.3911 > Beach Grove Golf Club: championship course in nearby Tsawwassen. 604.943.1155

Did you know? Delta gets more sun than any other lower Mainland city, all year-round! Boundary Bay & Centennial Beach Boundary Bay is Delta’s primary waterfront attraction. It’s the perfect place for romantic walks, cycling and running, with large expanses of sand, sea and wetlands on Centennial Beach. Warm, shallow waters and the park’s abundant bird life make this a wonderful spot for swimming, picnics and strolls along various nature trails. Relax by the water, have lunch at the small beach café and let the kids loose at the playground. The beach is also home to historic Cammidge House and has on-site volleyball and tennis courts, as well as a softball field. (Map 4, G6–H5) Image: Adrian MacNair Photography

Water Sports Delta is ideal for kayaking, boating and adventures along the Fraser River. You’ll see beautiful birds and wildlife, picturesque fishing boats and floating homes – all while learning about the value of local ecosystems. Explore the area by kayak or boat from Ladner Harbour to view bald eagles, snow geese, sea lions and harbour seals. Lower Mainland outfitting and tour companies can get you set up with everything you need to have an awesome time exploring this beautiful region.

Delta is officially incorporated as a municipality in order to better serve its growing population.

The Tsawwassen First Nation is granted selfgoverning status by the federal government – a first in Canada.

A “mega-mall” project is approved by the Tsawwassen First Nation, with 97 per cent of voters in favour of the project. Expected to create jobs and stimulate tourism for the community, the mall is set to open in 2016.

MORE TO EXPLORE

T

hree communities – North Delta, Tsawwassen and Ladner – make Delta a spectacular place to visit, offering plenty of recreational and cultural pursuits. A side-trip south of the border to Point Roberts can yield some of the best whale watching around.

North Delta & Watershed Park A vibrant commercial district and a pristine natural setting make North Delta truly unique. The municipality boasts large forested parks, great shopping and ample sports and fitness facilities, including the Sungod Recreation Centre with five pools, aerobic and cycling studios, a physiotherapy clinic and a coffee kiosk at 7815 112 Street. For outdoor fun, mountain bikers flock to North Delta’s Watershed Park for its various sloping grades and diverse terrain, plus a plethora of manmade features, like log and ladder combinations. Walkers are more than welcome to take to the trails, as are equestrians. Pack a picnic lunch and head to the promontory lookout for a clear view of Mud Bay. After your workout, visit the only Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in Western Canada at Scottsdale Centre or head to the Delta Nature Reserve for viewing and tours. delta.ca

Ladner & Ladner Village Delta and Ladner were settled in the late-19th century by Coast Salish First Nations. Later arrivals, like brothers William and Thomas Ladner, saw sustenance in the soil where the Fraser River meets the sea. William eventually donated property to build a wharf that would help farmers ship their produce to nearby urban centres. Ladner’s Landing grew as a fishing village and service centre for the surrounding farms. Today, there’s always something to see and do in Ladner Village, the Delta area’s original settlement. Turn to our events calendar for info on Pioneer May Days, which includes a parade, carnival rides, a pancake breakfast and live music, and the Ladner Village Market, or simply stroll through the village, exploring the unique retailers and restaurants. ladnervillagemarket.com Image Adrian MacNair Photography

Point Roberts & Lighthouse Park Immediately south of Tsawwassen is Point Roberts, WA, one of only three areas in the U.S. that, by land, can only be accessed through Canada. Home to about 1,500 year-round residents, Point Roberts was created in 1846 when the international boundary was set, separating the area from the rest of Washington state. The border between Tsawwassen and Point Roberts is open 24-7, and a passport or an enhanced driving licence is required. Point Roberts is home to a large marina that offers easy access to the Gulf and San Juan islands. If arriving by boat, check out the thousand-slip Point Roberts Marina Resort. Lighthouse Park on the southwest tip offers panoramic views of Georgia Strait and, in summer, some of the best killer whale watching on the mainland. For birdwatchers, the peninsula is known for seabirds, loons, grebes, terns, and jaegers. With plenty of trails, the area is also perfect for biking and boasts giant clay cliffs – an impressive sight to say the least!

Tsawwassen & Centennial Beach There’s so much to see and do in Tsawwassen, which means “land facing the sea.” Home to the BC Ferries terminal for Vancouver Island, many travellers stop at the terminal’s stunning Tsawwassen Quay Market, which brings the outdoors in with full-height windows, exposed wood beams and a painted nautical chart of the B.C. coastline decorating the floor. Tsawwassen is also great place to enjoy a variety of water sports, with Centennial Beach in Boundary Bay Regional Park boasting warm, shallow waters perfect for kayaking, windsurfing and skimboarding. There’s lots to do in Tsawwasen all year round, thanks to a variety of arts and cultural events, from concerts to live theatre and everything in-between. The ancestral home of the Tsawwassen First Nation, the area is blessed with three days of sunshine for every one day seen in Vancouver. To celebrate this gift, the Tsawwassen Sun Festival in August provides family fun with a parade, children’s midway, antique fair, slow-pitch tournament, BMX air show, live entertainment, fireworks, food vendors and more. When the sun sets enjoy free fun at Tsawwassen’s Outdoor Movie Nights. shoptsawwassen.com Image Adrian MacNair Photography

FOR THE BIRDS

“D

elta is an amazing place for wildlife watching, and birds are especially numerous throughout the whole year. As well, in spring and summer, grey whales, orcas, and other marine mammals are often spotted offshore.” – Anne Murray Bird’s-eye View Situated on the Pacific Flyway, Delta is a bird migration hot spot. Numerous international designations recognize its importance to the shorebirds, ducks, geese, swans and songbirds that stop to feed and rest on their long journeys. Boundary Bay, Roberts Bank and the Fraser River Estuary rank as the top Important Bird Areas in Canada: a global designation that attracts visitors from around the world. This means seeing up to 100,000 snow geese migrating from Russia in fall, or flocks of High Arctic brant wintering at Beach Grove lagoon. Hundreds of thousands of western sandpipers pass through the area during migration, while 50,000 or so dunlin spend the winter at Boundary Bay with their black-bellied plover and sanderling friends. The dikes, marshes and fields around Delta are great places to see birds of prey, including owls, hawks, harriers, falcons and bald eagles, and Boundary Bay is the best place in the country to spot wintering birds of prey. Head to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island or join guided walks led by local experts through the Birds on the Bay program. Stroll through Boundary Bay Regional Park or along the 16-kilometre (10-mile) dike beside the salt marshes and mud flats. Discover the largest great blue heron colony on the Pacific Northwest coast in a wooded bluff on Tsawwassen First Nation lands beside the ferry causeway. Image: Reifel Bird Sanctuary

Getting Around

D

elta is surrounded by water on three sides. It was formed by silt from the Fraser River building up over hundreds of years, and is therefore a true “delta.” With the river to its north, the U.S. border and Boundary Bay to the south, the District of Surrey east and the Strait of Georgia west, Delta is bounded by beauty on all sides. Home to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal (the departure point for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands), Delta is easily accessible by rail, water and major highways in all directions, and is roughly 50 minutes from Vancouver and 20 minutes from the Vancouver International Airport in Richmond. There’s also an airport for small planes near Boundary Bay in South Delta. Image: BC Ferry Services Inc.

O.W.L. (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society O.W.L. (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned raptors. O.W.L. offers public guided tours on Saturdays and Sundays from September to June and daily tours in July and August between 10 am and 3 pm. Check out their website, owlcanada.org, for more information on events, sponsorships, education programs and more! Image: O.WL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society

Wildlife Viewing Trips The Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area is a large parcel of wetland wilderness conserved as wildlife habitat; currently, the Delta Nature Reserve is the only spot from which the public may view this specialized bog ecosystem, which includes unique plants like Labrador tea and bog rosemary and diverse animals like Columbian black-tailed deer, sandhill cranes, songbirds, rare shrews and voles and several species of salamander. In addition, whale-watching trips in the Georgia Strait leave from Steveston, across the river in Richmond; join one to see seals, sea lions and porpoises. From Ladner Harbour explore the creeks around the South Arm Marshes, where you’ll spot herons, swans, ducks, redwinged blackbirds and other feathered friends.

Tips & Tricks Follow these guidelines for great wildlife viewing: • Check the tide. Low tides take birds far from sight. • Explore during quieter times, like early morning or late afternoon.

• Never let your dog chase birds or animals; for group trips leave Fido at home. • Get out and enjoy Delta’s wealth of wildlife!

Cycle City The flat roads, trails and dykes of Delta offer some of the best biking in the Greater Vancouver region. Here are a few suggestions on how to get your beloved biped to the area: > TransLink makes it easy to take your bike with you, with racks and space on buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus and the West Coast Express rail line. There are even bike lockers available at many convenient locations. 604.953.3333 | translink.ca > The Coast Mountain Bus Company operates several bike rack-equipped bus routes in the region, with racks available on a first-come, first-served basis. 604.953.3333 | coastmountainbus.com > The George Massey Tunnel Bike Shuttle offers cyclists and their bikes transportation through the tunnel on Highway 99 south of Vancouver. Trips in both directions are available most days of the year, but call ahead to make sure. 604.575.7020 or 604.271.0337 | th.gov.bc.ca
