Shipping container housing is a hit in Canada CARA MCKENNA THE CANADIAN PRESS

They were once rusting hulks relegated to junkyards. Now shipping containers are being repurposed into stylish homes that developers plan to roll out in housing-crunched communities across Canada. A three-storey development in Vancouver’s poorest neighbourhood uses just 12 of the millions of containers decommissioned after a life on the sea of five to 10 years. What started as a pilot project on the Downtown Eastside is expanding in the city — and the same model is set to be stacked up in aboriginal communities in British Columbia, Alberta and Nunavut. Marnie Crassweller lives in a “studio” container. A 285-squarefoot suite home with an ocean view, in-suite washer-dryer, kitchen and private bathroom. “I find it to be a beautiful suite,” she said, gesturing to her home. She said she often has to dispel misconceptions with people who ask questions like: “Isn’t it cold? Isn’t is like a dungeon?” “And as you can see, it’s not.” Janice Abbott, the CEO of social housing agency Atira Property Management Inc., described the container construction as “building with

Lego blocks,” saying it’s a fast, environmentally-friendly and — presumably — a cheaper way to build homes. “You have to think of them as exoskeletons or substructures,” said Abbott. Each container is fitted for plumbing and wiring and is insulated and drywalled. Abbott said the containers are built with high-grade steel that is much stronger than wood,

and more than one can be fused together to create multi-bedroom suites. Her agency has studied the cost of container housing and believes it to be a cheaper. From the front, the narrow three-storey container development is a modern complex with large windows, but from the side, you can see the ridged steel of what was once a shipping container.

The project, completed in 2013, was Canada’s first development of recycled shipping containers and the spaces are so in-demand that a second complex is being planned a few blocks away. The concept is quintessentially Vancouver, where the overheated real estate market has forced creative housing solutions in small spaces. But Abbott said the idea is catching on in communities across Canada where suitable housing is direly needed. Her agency is looking at building container developments on six or seven reserves across the country, with help from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. Abbott said the next development will likely be on First Nations land near Tofino, on Vancouver Island, and she is working on choosing the next site in Alberta, from a number of interested First Nations. She is also in discussions with leaders of an Inuit settlement in Baker Lake, Nunavut, which gets almost all of its supplies shipped with containers that are never returned, because it’s cheaper to build new in China than return them. “The goal is to try and demonstrate that this kind of building technology works in all these different climate zones.”

Abbott said Atira is looking at reserves, because there are ongoing issues of housing shortages on many reserves. She said there are many other reasons to use containers. “They can be recycled, obviously, but the higher or best use is to repurpose them and reuse the m.” Gordon Price, a civic issues expert and former Vancouver councillor who now directs the City Program at Simon Fraser University, said he’s skeptical of the benefits. He said he can’t see the savings being significant enough to make it worthwhile, because there are many other key expenses, particularly land costs. “It’s certainly not a revolutionary solution,” he said. For Crassweller, a recovering alcoholic who was homeless for fives years, said the suite is a “sanctuary.” As part of her agreement to live in the building, she mentors at-risk women under 24 who are being housed in single-room accommodation next to her building. “I was pretty destructive for too many years,” she said. “Now I’m here, just trying to step up to the plate, trying to move towards working and being self-supportive.”

WAUKEGAN, Ill. â€” Drew Davis walked up the steps of his Waukegan home with his nine-yearold twins, Hope and Finn, to discover a new door, fresh blue paint on the siding and yellow daffodils and forsythia blooming where old, unkempt bushes once grew. Inside, he found a remodeled interior with an art studio and living room designed to give him the space he needs to paint while his children do their homework. â€œI was blown away by the people wanting to support us â€” the kindheartedness,â€? Davis said on a recent Sunday, as family, friends, designer and workers along with George Oliphant, host of the NBC show George to the Rescue, celebrated the unveiling of Davisâ€™ remodeled home and exterior. George to the Rescue renovates homes for deserving people. Drewâ€™s sister, Amy Davis Fahey of another Chicago suburb, Northbrook, made it happen. Fahey wrote a letter late last year to TV talk show host Meredith Vieira, who was seeking people facing challenges to make a wish. Instead of making a wish for herself, Fahey told Vieira that Davis, a single dad, was laid off and working two jobs

to make ends meet while trying to grow his art business. He couldnâ€™t afford to repair the roof or remodel his home, which had, among other things, broken glass in cabinets and a fireplace that was falling apart. She wished he could get some help in fixing his home and that his business would take off. Fahey and Davis grew up in Northbrook with parents who were teachers. Davis, a recovering alcoholic, has been sober for 33 years, Fahey said. Since then, heâ€™s been mentoring others, including working with youth in rehab to educate them

about drugs and alcohol. After receiving the nomination letter from Fahey and interviewing her, Vieira arranged for a local roofer to repair the hole in Davisâ€™ roof and asked Oliphant to do the renovations and find a local interior designer. Oliphant found Susan Brunstrum, owner of Sweet Peas Design Studio in suburban Libertyville. â€œNearly everything has been done through community service,â€? including the design and labor, Oliphant said, adding his show provided the materials. Davis and his children were given a free hotel room in

Gurnee, Ill., for several weeks while the work was done. On the 60-degree day with the forecasted rain holding off, neighbours strolled to the Davis house, and entered the home where Hope and Finn petted Hendrix, their Bullmastiff who takes up nearly half the living room. His daughter, Lauren Sczygielski-Anders, who lives down the street from Davis, said, â€œThis has been the buzz of the neighborhood the last several weeks. Drew and his kids are wonderful people. All the neighbours are so excited for them. Itâ€™s gonna be nothing but good things for them from now on.â€? Brunstrum said she was inspired by Davisâ€™ artwork, bold, colorful acrylic paintings. â€œWe chose a gallery-esque backdrop of grays and ivories with pops of bright orange in the accessories, and we installed his art throughout to personalize his home,â€? she said. A centerpiece in the new art studio is a portrait of Davisâ€™ father set on an easel. Fahey said Davis was living in California when their parents became ill, and within a few days, he was on a plane to move back to Chicagoâ€™s north suburbs to help her take care of them. Both parents have since died.

Davis also creates jewelry as well as T-shirts and other clothing with motivational sayings to inspire those struggling with addiction. He began to paint while working at rehab facilities for youth, he said. Vieira told Davis on the show what she planned to do for him. â€œI admire you as a father and what you do for your community,â€? she said. Both said the other has always been there for family needs. Davis was there when Faheyâ€™s husband died, helping with her children and giving the eulogy at the service. Two years ago when Davis lost his job and became a single father, Fahey admitted she was â€œworried about him.â€? Thatâ€™s when she learned about Vieira seeking to help others who had fallen on hard times. She had to gather courage to write the letter, she said. â€œThis is a fresh new start for Drew and the kids,â€? Fahey said. â€œEmotionally, itâ€™s given him what he needs.â€? Davis said his sisterâ€™s gift has inspired him to approach his art business with renewed vigor and to get more involved with ArtWauk, a monthly evening downtown event when local art galleries stay open late and provide free admission.
