The BC Wildfire Service has been continuing with full suppression of a fire near Baynes Lake, which at press time was estimated to be 75 per cent contained with a size of around 117 hectares.

On Monday, the primary objective of crews was to contain the west flank of the fire to protect property. BC Wildfire Service crews have successfully completed burnoff operations on the south-west corner of the fire to create a containment line.

The west flank of the fire is directly adjacent to containment lines established during the Cutts Pasture

prescribed burn.

These containment lines were used during today’s burn- off operation, benefiting suppression efforts.

Due to strong winds Saturday, the fire was showing aggressive behavior upon arrival of BC Wildfire Service staff. Fire activity has since decreased, with areas of Rank 2 and a low rate of spread in the timber. There has not been any significant growth since yesterday.

As of press time, there was still an evacuation alert issued for Baynes Lake and the area previously under Order (the area south of 1347 Waldo Road, including the com-

munity of Kragmont and an area south of the river). That particular fire has 47 firefighters working on it, heavy equipment and tankers as needed The fire at Spillimacheen was last reported at 54 hectares in size and 30 per cent contained. An evacuation order remains in place for one home north of the area. An evacuation alert is in place for the area south of the RDEK Boundary, east of Columbia River south to Westside Road in Spillimacheen. This fire has 43 firefighters on the job, heavy equipment and aerial support.

B.C. Views: Outlook for climate policies

by Tom Fletcher Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau came to Vancouver last week to unveil his environmental platform for the Oct. 19 federal election.

Trudeau promised an overhaul of the National Energy Board and a vaguely defined intention to work with provinces to impose a “price” on carbon dioxide emissions across the country.

Trudeau’s media tour took him to the Burnaby facilities of General Fusion, where, like Premier Christy Clark a few weeks before, he stood at his podium before a prototype fusion reactor. This massive octopus of pistons and wires is an attempt to capture the nuclear reaction that powers the Sun and other stars, containing its fury within steel walls and magnetic fields.

The old joke about controlled fusion is that every 20 years, scientists tell us it’s just 20 years away. If it ever is developed, such a process could quickly put an end to our hand-wringing about fossil fuels, largely replacing them with endless, emission-free energy.

This is the type of technological revolution that Prime Minister Stephen

Harper’s officials indicated would be needed, after Canada announced a pledge with other G7 leaders to make their economies carbon-free by 2100. That’s right, some time within the next 85 years.

Clark visited General Fusion in May to announce her new climate action advisory panel, which has to give her a plan to take to Paris next December.

That’s the next big United Nations climate summit, where Trudeau hopes to lead a delegation of premiers to stop the flow of “fossil awards” given to Canada by people in polar bear suits.

Asked about the fusion reactor she had just toured, Clark laughed off the question, comparing it to the “flux capacitor” used for time travel in the Michael J. Fox movie <I>Back to the Future</I>.

Trudeau recently told university students that we need to change our concepts of time and space, and he didn’t seem to be kidding.

The point here for voters is that all these leaders, Harper, Trudeau, Clark and many others, are talking down to you. You aren’t sophisticated enough to understand this climate business.

The Pope has weighed in, assuring us that carbon trading systems are not going to cut it.

This is a rebuke to California, Quebec and the European Union, where effective carbon trading is, like

controlled fusion, just around the corner.

Pope Francis warned that our “throwaway culture” views nature “solely as a source of profit and gain” and so people won’t voluntarily do the right thing. (The results of the Metro Vancouver transit plebiscite could be interpreted this way, if you ignore the bumbling, waste and political posturing that really did it in.)

The Pope concludes that there is “an urgent need” for a “true world political authority” to impose order on the greedy capitalist humans that infest our beautiful planet.

Presumably this would be the run by the UN, so my advice is to start hoarding candles and cat food now.

B.C.’s frozen carbon tax has ceased to have much effect, with gasoline consumption back up over 2008 levels amid the usual volatility of prices. Gasoline is going for around $1.30 a litre, despite the prolonged slump in crude oil prices, and people have basically forgotten about this tax on top of all the other gas taxes.

Perhaps B.C. can brag in Paris about the Pacific Carbon Trust, which limps along after its near-death experience in 2013.

The trust continues to divert tax dollars from B.C. government operations to purported carbon-saving activities, including paying coastal First Nations not to log the portions of forests that they demanded be preserved.

Letter: Will Wilks show up for debates?

Recently, the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce announced that it is already organizing an all candidate’s event for the upcoming federal

election. Wonderful!

The looming question is: “Will MP David Wilks show up for all the debates?”

In 2011 Mr. Wilks attendance was 43%.

Letter: Questions remain about Jumbo fate June 18 was a momentous date for the people of the Kootenay and British Columbia – cancellation of the Environmental Assessment Certificate (EAC) for Jumbo Glacier Resort must now mark the end of a decades-long struggle for the protection of one of this region’s most beloved wild places, the Jumbo Valley.

The would-be developers failed to make a substantial start on their fabled resort

despite a ten-year window of permission and the absurd creation and public financing of an entire municipal structure to enable them to proceed. On June 18, the Province of BC said “enough is enough”, and allowed the resort’s environmental approval to permanently expire.

What has been left behind is a hot mess to be cleaned up one piece at a time. There are five major questions that the Province must respond to in

There was plenty of whooping and a couple of ‘yee-ha’s’ as local parade floats won top prizes at the Calgary Stampede.

The Cranbrook Sam Steele Days parade float, honouring 50 years of youth ambassadors, won in the Best Muncipal Float category, with the City of Kimberley’s float taking second runner up.

“Thank you to all the participants of this year’s Parade and congratulations to the award winners – we couldn’t have done it without you,” says Mayne Root, Chair, Parade Committee.

1. Shade by the Falls. Established in 1936, Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens features 40 hectares of beautifully maintained gardens, just a 10 minute drive north of Niagara Falls. It includes an ever growing collection of shade loving perennials and understory trees. Visitors can meander along flagstone paths beneath towering white pine and spruce.

2. Where the Sun don’t Shine. The most cooling kind of shade is the one provided by evergreens or closely spaced shrubs and trees that don’t allow any direct light to penetrate. This is maybe the most difficult type of shade as plants will not only have to be able to handle the lack of sunlight, but the roots of the canopy trees and shrubs can also deprive your plants of water and nutrition.

3. 50 Shades. There are many different types of shade. There is the light shade of a permanent shadow cast by a building or plants in an area otherwise open to light. Partial shade is an area that receives up to six hours of direct sunlight, with most of those hours being in the morning.

The canopies of open tree branches or latticework structures can create dapples or filtered shade with patterns of light shifting all day.

4. Make the Most of Shade. Some people think that shade means you can’t garden or at least you won’t have any flowering plants. This is far from the truth and, in fact, gardening in the shade presents unique opportunities. Shade gardens are usually not as thirsty - and often not as plagued by weeds - as locations in the full sun.

5. Get a Good Start. Give your shade garden the best possible growing environment by digging in some organic matter, such as compost or manure, to help keep the soil moist. Watering each plant as you set it in and mulching immediately with an organic material such as bark or rough compost will help with holding moisture as well. Their roots will get a good start if you use bone meal and transplanter fertilizer when you plant.

6. Burst of Colour. Flowers, colour and exuberance with abandon, that’s what annuals bring into the garden and there are some that love the shade.

Begonias, sometimes also called the ‘Queens of Summer Shade’, fuchsias, impatiens and coleus are some of the annual favourites that prefer to stay out of the sun.

7. B & B in the Shade. One of the perennial favorites is the early spring blooming, old fashioned dicentra, commonly called ‘Bleeding Heart’. Bleeding Heart plants are very hardy, low maintenance, deer resistant, as well as relatively pest and disease free. Another early bloomer is brunnera with its sky-blue flowers. When not in bloom, its large, robustly textured leaves continue to look great.

8. One and One Make Three. Heuchera, also known as ‘Coral Bells’ are mounding plants grown mostly for their colourful foliage, but they do send up exquisite spikes with small bell-shaped flowers.

There are again many choices for colour and variegation. Tiarella - or ‘Foamflower’ is a wildflower and garden plant found in North America and Asia. When you cross the two, you get heucherella that shows similarities to both parents. And all of them like the shade.

9. A Feather in the Cap. Astilbes stun in the shade garden with their feathery plumes. This tough perennial blooms in shades of burgundy, red, pink, lavender, and white. In addition to the attractive flowers, these shade plants have finely cut foliage, which in many varieties is flushed with bronze.

10. Shades of Green. A list of shade-loving plants would not be complete without the hosta.

This plant comes in a huge assortment of sizes, shapes and colour, from blues to greens, variegated shades of yellows to white, some with more textured leaves, and some with more upright leaves.

Firefighters from Ontario have arrived in province to help out

Firefighters and aircraft from Ontario arrived in B.C. Tuesday to help deal with the growing wildfire threat, and more reinforcements are on their way from Australia.

Ontario sent 70 firefighters and specialists to Abbotsford and Cranbrook for deployment in the Coastal and Southeast fire centres, with two skimming aircraft, a “birddog” plane and an air attack officer arriving at the Kamloops fire centre.

Forests Minister Steve Thomson said he expects further help to arrive from Australia,

with more personnel coming from New Zealand to assist fire crews in Alberta.

More assistance has been requested through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, which sent B.C. crews to Alaska, Alberta and Yukon earlier in the season.

The B.C. Wildfire Service recorded 23 new fires Monday, with 184 active fires in the province. As of Tuesday there were 40 homes under evacuation order and another 920 on alert.

In ancient times, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and cell phones weighed 2 lbs, many companies were connecting to the internet and setting up email systems. Email is the biggest revolution in communications in the business community since the invention of the telephone.

Many startup companies today choose free or low cost email systems included with their internet connection. IT companies refer to these types of email systems as ‘pop’ accounts.

A simple explanation of how pop mail works; 1. Company A writes an email to Company B on their local computer system.

2. This email is transmitted to the Internet via connection locally.

3. Mail is delivered to Company B’s ISP - a server that holds the mail for Company B. 4. Computers at Company B retrieve mail from the servers via a local connection.

There are a lot of problems with POP accounts; • Local mail stores on the computer are not generally backed up since backup systems become overly complex and difficult to maintain with the increase in computers locally.

• Changing computers can involve hours of additional work as large, bloated mail systems locally need to be transferred manually and can be complex to setup.

• The system is designed to handle incoming mail, and sent or other mail is only available locally where it originated.

Second generation email systems have arrived and vastly improved the technology. Mail is now delivered to sophisticated servers which handle complex communications between the local email client and the servers. These mail systems often include calendars, tasks and address books with the ability to share some or all of this with other users. Spam removal is much simpler on these types of servers.

Synchronization between all the mail enabled devices improves the user experience vastly.

Many companies are offering internet based ‘cloud’ servers called Hosted Exchange Servers.

Pop accounts are still popular because they are considered free but are becoming expensive to maintain and troubleshoot.

City says: sidewalks not for bikes, skateboards Those who like to ride their bikes or skateboards are asked to please stay off the sidewalks around the City.

City staff has fielded a number of calls from the public over the past few weeks complaining of some near misses between riders, boarders and pedestrians – especially in the downtown. Last summer, a resident walking downtown was struck by a cyclist riding along the sidewalk.

The resident suffered injuries as a result of

the collision, which included some broken bones.

Under the City’s Streets & Traffic Bylaw “no person shall ride a cycle, which includes a skateboard, on any sidewalk”.

Being caught by Bylaw Services riding a bicycle or skateboard on a sidewalk can result in a $25 fine.

Jay Chalke begins term as B.C.’s Ombudsperson

by Jeff Nagel B.C.’s new Ombudsperson, Jay Chalke, began his term this week, leading the independent provincial oversight body responsible for receiving and investigating complaints about the administrative actions of provincial public authorities.

“The Office of the Ombudsperson delivers a vital service to British Columbians,” says Chalke. “Each year our office investigates over 1,600 individual public complaints about provincial public authorities.

Every investigation is a potential opportunity to achieve a fair

resolution and enhance openness, transparency, accountability – improving the delivery of provincial services for everyone.”

In addition to the over 1,600 complaints that are investigated, nearly 5,000 are resolved or otherwise addressed at the intake or early resolution stage. The Office of the Ombudsperson carries out investigations into the actions of ministries, Crown corporations, commissions and boards, local governments and other public agencies. Additionally, the office conducts systemic investigations into problems that may be more widespread.

“Independently pro-

tecting administrative fairness for the people of B.C. is critically important,” says Chalke. “As I begin my six-year mandate I look forward to working with our established team to serve all British Columbians, including those who have been unfairly treated, are vulnerable, or face a disadvantage in their relationship with public organizations.”

Chalke was appointed on May 26, 2015 by an all-party committee of the Legislative Assembly, which unanimously recommended his appointment pursuant to the Ombudsperson Act. He is taking over from outgoing Ombudsperson Kim Carter who was first appointed in 2006 and announced her departure earlier this year.

Since 1979, the Office of the Ombudsperson has had a statutory mandate from the provincial legislature to uphold fair and reasonable conduct by provincial public authorities. In addition to investigating individual complaints, the Ombudsperson also publishes systemic investigations and recommendations for changes that address

administrative unfairness and improve pub-

MARLOW, Charles Henry 1932 – 2015 On Sunday morning, July 5, 2015, Charles “Chick” Henry Marlow passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 82 years with his family by his side. Chick was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta on December 11, 1932 to Bill and Lillian Marlow.

Chick married the love of his life, Beverley June Owen on February 21, 1952. He moved with his wife and children from Lethbridge, Alberta in 1966 and continued his career in the roofing business. After a few years, he owned and operated his own roofing business (United Roofing Ltd.) until his retirement in 1997. He enjoyed bowling and curling and his free time was spent with his family and chasing grandkids from rink to rink. His love of hockey had him at all Kootenay Ice games, sharing seats with his son Trace and grandson Wyatt. Chick spent many hours in the barn with his granddaughters, Shandi and Caitlin. He loved the cowboy way and values of life. He was the special constable and inspector for the SPCA for many years. He passed this passion and love of animals on to his family. He will be missed and forever in our hearts.

Chick leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 63 years, Bev as well as one son Trace (Kati) Marlow and one daughter Heather Henry. He also leaves five grandchildren; Cameron, Dietrich, Shandi, Caitlin and Wyatt and four great grandchildren; Matthew, Mackenzie, Lukas and Hailey. Chick was predeceased by his three children, Donald, Terry and Rick Marlow, two sisters May Hebert and June Stromme.

Mussels and other invasive species such as Eurasian Milfoil are spread primarily by boaters moving from infested lakes to non-infested without properly cleaning,

Invasive zebra and quagga mussels were first discovered in North America in 1988 in the Great Lakes system. It is believed that the larvae were transported in the ballast water of a cargo ship from Europe. It quickly spread throughout the system and many Eastern Lakes.

Despite a great joint effort to contain them to the East, by 2007

they had spread to Lake Mead in Nevada and then to many lakes in the Southwestern US. New infestations are discovered every year as the mussels move North in the US and West in Canada.

Mussels were discovered last year in Lake Winnipeg, and are now firmly established.

The impact of invasive mussels in those areas has been astronomical and far-reaching. They colonize docks, boat

EKIPC displayed their mobile decontamination unit, which was funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and BC Hydro in 2012. The decontamination unit is a portable, self contained, high pressure, high heat wash units that would allow trained conservation officers to decontaminate watercraft. EKIPC also displayed new aquatic monitoring equipment designed to sample for invasive aquatic plants or invasive mussel larvae in a waterbody.

Early detection would allow for measures to be taken to prevent the spread of invasive species to other water bodies.

EKIPC also has aquatic facilitators to work with lake stewardship groups.

They will spread the “Clean, Drain, Dry” message to boaters and property owners.

They will also help them to identify invasive species, inspect boats, install signage, and design aquatic invasive monitoring systems.

John Reith, and Greg Ross represented the Jim Smith Lake Community Association expressed their appreciation for the work that EKIPC has been doing, as well as for the support and education that they continue to provide their organization.

The association is particularly concerned about the potential effects of invasive species on the wildlife and the native plant varieties surrounding the lake.

They also continue to express concern about the negative impact that aquatic invasive plants may have on recreational activities in and around the lake.

The area is popular destination for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, rowing and fishing, and the association would like it to remain this way.

They are worried that the introduction of invasive mussels into the lake could lead to it being shut down, which they say would be “disastrous.”

Jim Smith Lake has already contended with invasive yellow flag iris and purple loosestrife infestations. These plants were introduced in BC as horticultural species which “jumped the fence” and became invasive.

Marika Welsh, the Area Supervisor at BC Parks East Kootenay South shared that,

“people visit BC Parks for a variety of reasons. These include their recreational opportunities, their scenic value and because they protect native species and habitats.”

Ms. Welsh went on to say that introducing these alien invaders could threaten these core values and make “boating and swimming undesirable’” as well as “reducing the appeal of beach areas.”

East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett is a strong supporter of EKIPC and added that, “It is comforting for me and my constituents to know that that the EKIPC is working hard against aquatic infestations as well as (terrestrial) invasive plant infestations that are such a threat to our natural environment.”

The strength of these partnerships and the quick action taken in response to threats of invasive mussel introduction has averted many close calls in BC. Our beautiful British Columbia does not have to succumb to this intrusion. It will take a concerted effort, but the EKIPC is committed to this cause and is confident that if we all work together, we can achieve effective preventative measures.

We will save millions of dollars, avoid extensive environmental damage, and preserve the natural beauty and resources of our province for generations to come.

2016 Sonata Hybrid Gasoline-electric hybrids have become commonplace and continue to evolve and improve. Nowhere is this more obvious than with Hyundai’s second-generation Sonata Hybrid.

Sales of these gas/electrics has always been subject to market forces that dictate the price of fossil fuels.

And with today’s lower/steady pump prices, it means that automakers are having a harder time winning over apathetic buyers. But fuel prices will go up at some point and Hyundai will be ready with a new-tech hybrid that arrives this summer, followed by a plug-in version this fall.

Rather than following the herd, the Sonata Hybrid continues to chart its own course. Visually, the car is distinguished from rank-andfile Sonatas with an enlarged grille with integrated blacked-out bumper and active grille shutters. The latter reduce the air entering the engine bay at highway speeds to help reduce the parachute effect (drag). According to Hyundai, the Sonata Hybrid is the slipperiest of all hybrid sedans and also matches the electric-powered Tesla Model S in this regard. Additionally, unique front fenders, rear bumper and spoil-

er, rocker panels and front and rear lights give the Hybrid its own special character while the 16-inch and optional 17-inch alloy wheels are fitted with low-rolling-resistance tires.

The interior is standard Sonata fare, except for a couple of important additions. A display gauge (in place of a tachometer) shows the lithiumpolymer battery’s charge status and a separate electric-flow meter shows when the battery is actually assisting the gas engine. Whether you want to know this, even, the info is there.

The internal-combustion component consists of a 154-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that’s coupled to a 51-horsepower electric motor to produce a total system output of 193 horses. That’s a bit less than the previous Sonata Hybrid’s 206 horsepower, however the battery pack makes more juice than before and allows the Hybrid to travel at speeds up to 120 km-h on electricity alone.

The fuel economy of 5.9 l/100 km in the city and 5.3 on the highway bests the gasoline-only Sonata’s 9.8/6.7 numbers, with the most obvious advantage occuring in the city cycle where elecrtric assist comes into play more often. A comparison

to the previous hybrid is pointless since the way that Transport Canada rates fuel economy has changed. The Hybrid’s figures can be improved upon somewhat by selecting the “Eco” mode. On the other hand, picking

the “Sport” mode (in a hybrid?) will boost acceleration at the expense of fuel efficiency.

As before, there’s a traditional six-speed automatic transmission instead of a continuously variable

unit (CVT), which is technology that’s preferred by the competition.

For many people, however, the sixspeed is more acceptable than the CVT from a drivability standpoint.

For 2016, the battery pack has been relocated beneath the trunk floor from behind the rear seat. As a result, stowage space can be enhanced by dropping the newly available split-folding rear seatback (a pass-through opening is standard).

The space-saver spare tire has been replaced by a temporary repair kit/ inflator.

At an estimated $32,000 (including destination charges), the base Sonata Hybrid comes with dualzone climate control, pushbutton start and a hands-free smart trunk opener that’s activated when the key fob is within three feet of the trunk for more than three seconds. This signals intent to open on your part.

The equipment list obviously grows as you head up to the Hybrid Limited and Ultimate trims, where you’ll find an assortment of luxury and tech items packaged in.

Available is a blind-spot system that advises of traffic approaching from the adjacent lanes. Also optional is the increasingly common electronic safety trio of lane-change warning, forward-collision alert and cross-traffic alert, the latter of which lets you know about moving/stationary objects behind you when backing up.

While not necessarily a segment game changer, the Sonata Hybrid is a stronger alternative to the class eco-leaders than before, in terms of both performance and practicality. Add style and luxury and some buyers might find this mix hard to overlook.

Changes to the Firearms Act as Bill C-42 is granted Royal Assent deemed necessary at the time of implementation to accommodate those Canadians who have guns in the house but do not engage with them for sport or recreation.

These guns were often heirlooms that were either inherited or collected by aficionados.

Under the terms of Bill C-42 those who have current, updated POL licenses will soon find themselves upgraded to PAL once the official conversion date has been set by an order in council.

This conversion will take place without the completion of the firearm safety course.

Dorian Boswell, a local certified firearm safety instructor, was instrumental in the design of the safety course and says Bill C-42 poses significant changes to the licensing process.

“The system has changed a lot over the years, but there hasn’t been anything this significant. The original POL was kind of a band-aid on long-arm registration and was intended to be transitioned so that everyone would eventually be on PALs, and now, 20 years later, they are finally making it happen,” Boswell said.

Boswell has been teaching the firearms safety course around the Kootenays for many years and views it as a service to the local community. However, with the new requirement of mandatory course participation by new license applicants, he is concerned about the logistics of course delivery in communities that do not have local certified instructors.

“I have the resources to provide this service, so I should be doing it, I feel obligated to do it because I am part of this community,” Boswell said, “but now that the course is mandatory and people are no longer allowed to challenge the test, its going to be hard for the government because they will need instructors in every community to deliver the course.”

Margaret Ann Dagg 1918 – 2015 Margaret Dagg passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Joseph Creek Care Village at 96 years of age.

Margaret was born on August 24, 1918 in Vernon, BC. She was an avid animal lover, especially cats, dogs and horses – which she still had when she passed away.

She is survived by her son George (Thelma) their children Bill, Laura and Wesley (Kelly); daughter Marie and her children Brandon, Holli and Kane Thompson; Cherry’s children Karen and Ronald Thompson, 15 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Billy in 1980 and her daughter Cherry in 1991.

There will be no funeral service at Margaret’s request.

Mary Lucinda “Mary Lou” Price (nee Shier) 1928 – 2015 Our mom, Mary Lou Price, passed away peacefully on the morning on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the F. W. Green Memorial Home in Cranbrook at 87 years of age.

Mom was born near Colonsay, Saskatchewan on March 2, 1928 to Samuel Edgar and Sarah Lucinda Shier. She grew up on the family farm and finished grade 12 there.

She attended Bible School in North Battleford, SK for two years and then continued on to Nursing School and became a Registered Nurse at Saskatoon City Hospital. She met ‘the handsome’ Nelson J.A. Price from Sonningdale, SK in 1950 (before all the schooling) and he waited for her to finish all of that before they married on March 12, 1955 in Saskatoon. They immediately moved out west to Marysville, BC (Kimberley) to start their new life together.

Mom and Dad raised four children, Dale, Gwen, Arlene and Cory in Marysville. Dad worked with his brother in construction, then purchased Ryan’s Tire Supply in Kimberley and then eventually started their own business of Price Excavating…….all the while with mom doing the books!

Mom also worked casual and eventually part-time as an RN at the Kimberley and District Hospital and the Kimberley Special Care Home “The Pines” while raising her family. She loved volunteering and was very social. She was involved with the school PTA while we were in grade school, belonged to the Marysville Sewing Circle, and volunteered her time with various community events. She was also a lifetime member of the Kimberley/Marysville Hospital Auxiliary, serving many years in the capacity of secretary and then treasurer.

A very big and important part of her life was her church family at the Cranbrook Christian Centre “The Dwelling Place”. She had a deep abiding, strong faith in God which resulted in her very positive outlook on life, in which she loved to share with everyone she met. She volunteered her time in the ministry of greeting cards dubbed as “The Card Lady”.

Mom was predeceased by her mother Sarah Lucinda Shier ten days after her birth in 1928; her aunt Elizabeth Shier in 1950 who lovingly helped raise her with her dad; her father Samuel Edgar Shier in 1952; her husband of 34 years Nelson J.A. Price in 1989; her infant grandson David Clarke in 1995; her sister-in-law Marjorie Shier in 1996 and her brother Maxwell Shier in 2003.

Mom, Mary Lou, has left to cherish her memory, her four children Dale (Marjorie), Gwen (David) Manarey, Arlene (Perry) Clarke and Cory; five grandchildren Anita (Scott) Falk, Julie Price, Karen (Curtis) Kaldestad, Emily and Robbie Clarke; three great grandchildren Mason, Hannah and Riley; her brother Herbert (Gudrun) Shier; sister-in-law Doreen Taylor; her brother-in-law Byron and his wife Hazel Price as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews who affectionately called her ‘Louie’, Aunt Louie, aunt Mary Lou and great auntie!

Our family is so blessed by her life and she has left us with a rich heritage and legacy. Thank you mom!

Mom was interred beside our dad (Nelson) in a private family gathering at Marysville Cemetery on Friday, July 3, 2015.

A memorial gathering and celebration of her life will be held later this summer.

Wildlife In-Focus contest is now on Is your camera ready?

The BC SPCA’s seventh annual WildlifeIn-Focus Photography Contest is now open for entries. The goal is to capture the best of British Columbia’s wildlife through the lens, whether the subjects are in your own backyard or in the vast natural wilderness of the province. All amateur photographers can enter the competition, which runs from July 1 through Sept.

“We are constantly amazed at the mindblowing photos we receive – they really showcase the astonishing diversity of animals we have throughout B.C., in both urban settings and isolated locations,” says BC SPCA chief scientific officer Dr. Sara Dubois. “From hummingbirds captured mid-flight in a garden ornament’s reflection to a Momma grizzly bear and her cubs crossing a river, the images are stunning and really make it tough for judges to choose the winning

photos.”

The contest supports the BC SCPA’s Wild Animal rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) on southern Vancouver Island, where more than 2,500 orphaned and injured wild animals are cared for each year.

Photos entered in previous contests have been featured in the BC SPCA’s Animal Sense and Bark! mag-

www.kootenayadvertiser.com 25 azines, as well as in BC SPCA educational materials, local newspapers, websites and social media – a testament to the calibre of the photos that are entered.

Prizes are awarded for the top three photos in each of two categories: Wild Settings and Backyard Habitats. The competition is open to all amateur photographers aged 14 and up.

All photos of wildlife entered must be taken within the province and submitted digitally. “Wildlife” includes

free-living birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and insects, but not exotic, feral or domestic animals, or wildlife in zoos or rehabilitation facilities. Learn more about this year’s contest and view past winners’ images at spca.bc.ca/ wildlife-in-focus.

“The contest encourages participants to explore green spaces, roadsides, mountain passes, beaches and backyards to find

striking photo opportunities that represent the resiliency of local wildlife living at the interface with humans,” Dubois says.

Photographers can even find inspiration online, with the livestreaming Wild ARC Critter Cam, which features wild patients in the facility 24/7, at spca.bc.ca/crittercam.
