In his first state of the city speech in late June at Tradex, Mayor Henry Braun reminisced about skating on an ice-covered Mill Lake in his youth and speculated that warmer temperatures could benefit local farmers.

“I think we’re going to be able to grow some crops that we haven’t [previously] been able to grow here,” he said.

Nine kilometres to the west, Masa Shiroki has been testing out that theory for several years now.

Shiroki grows four hectares of rice on land leased from Bakerview Ecodairy. It’s used to make artisan sake, or rice wine.

Four years into his project, Shiroki says the warmer it gets, the higher his yield, and thus the more profitable and sustainable his small business becomes.

“I think even a degree higher on average … makes a big difference to us,” he said. “Global warming helps us.”

t’s 9 a.m. on an early summer morning, and on a Sumas Prairie field, tractors kick up billowing clouds of dust as they plough into the Fraser Valley’s rich but bone-dry soil.

The nearby highway is still clogged with morning commuters, but the temperature is already climbing towards 30 C. This land has been profitable ever since Sumas Lake was drained in the early 1900s, and in its soil now grow berries and corn and vegetables and turf. The same occurs across Abbotsford – in Matsqui, Bradner, Glen Valley and elsewhere – where hundreds of millions of dollars worth of vegetables, fruit and livestock form the base of the local economy.

But as the dry weather continues and temperature records topple, the question now is whether growers adapt and thrive, or will they and their crops wilt under the sun?

TTTT The climate is essentially Mother Nature’s weather odds-maker. It can’t guarantee that you won’t have to use your umbrella in July, but climate trends tell you how likely it is to rain and, if so, how much is likely to fall.

However, those odds aren’t the same as when farmers were planting their fields 40 years ago.

Whether or not you agree with the scientific consensus that human activity is the cause of the change, the local climate has indisputably warmed over the past halfcentury.

The average high August temperature between 1961 and 1990 was 23.6 C. Since 1990, average August temperatures have dipped below that mark just once. The average temperature in the 30 years ending in 2010 was 0.7 C higher than in the 30 years preceding 1990.

Charges laid in fatal rollover Incident in March on Sumas Prairie Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A 29-year-old man has been charged in relation to a fatal rollover crash in Abbotsford in March.

Brandon Mitchell James Hayes has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and theft over $5,000.

The crash took place

just before 4:30 a.m. on March 10 in the area of Wells Line and Smith Line roads on Sumas Prairie.

Police and other first responders arrived on the scene to find a rolled-over 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup.

The vehicle had been travelling west on Wells Line Road, veered off the road and through a fence, and came to rest in the front yard of a home.

Two men were still in the vehicle, and one

of them, a passenger in the back seat, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The other man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A 14-year-old girl who had been in the vehicle was found a short distance from the scene and was also transported to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

A third male was located in a nearby outbuilding and was not seriously injured.

Police at the time said the Toyota Tacoma was confirmed as being stolen from central Abbotsford three days before the crash.

Ian MacDonald described the crash as “pretty catastrophic” and said it was fortunate there had not been more deaths.

Hayes next appears July 16 in Abbotsford provincial court.

He remains in custody, and is also before the courts for a charge

of uttering threats the day before the crash.

A trial on that matter has been scheduled for Aug. 20 in Abbotsford.

In November 2014, Hayes was convicted of theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, and breach of his bail conditions in Abbotsford, as well as possession of stolen property and breach of his bail conditions in Golden, B.C. He was sentenced to 45 days in prison followed by 18 months’ probation.

Other Hand If there is an upside to the drought we are currently experiencing, it is that lawn mowing is almost a forgotten activity, necessary now only to knock down the infernal weeds that seemingly grow out of nothing.

However, the lack of grass growth has far wider consequences to our pocketbooks in the form of ultimately higher food prices.

Normally farmers in the Fraser Valley are on their second cut of hay, with at least one or two more expected before the cool and wet of fall puts the balers to bed. Not this year, from what I have seen.

Similarly, across the Valley, the vast swaths of cow corn ground up each year as silage for cattle feed are suffering from

lack of rain.

Without access to sprinklers and irrigation ditches, fields containing cole crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts will see them wilt and die.

And unless we have a wet August, current weather conditions will translate into higher prices at the grocery store.

Already, beef prices some 70 per cent over last year are affecting people’s barbecue time, which right now is thrilling ranchers, but the dry conditions are also foretelling tough times ahead. Without adequate quantities of hay to overwinter the cows who produce the calves that eventually grace our plates, ranchers will have to reduce their herds, further exacerbating the rising cost of beef.

A number of years ago when the Cariboo suffered a similar drought, the hay shortage was so acute, a rancher friend of mine made the difficult and expensive choice to ship two-thirds of his herd, some 250 cows, to Alberta for the winter. I’m sure that knocked the crap out of his profitability for quite some time.

While I’m not certain of the hay potential up-country this year, I can imagine it is similar to then, except this year Alberta is also facing drought, and an equivalent dearth of hay and grain supplies. This means being unable to feed the cows.

They will be shipped for slaughter, resulting next year in beef shortages and thus

I live in what’s described as forest interface. We have thousands of acres of timber and bush lands that are tinder dry on this mountain, yet on the Crown land above us it is open season for dirt bikes and ATVs, for parties and overnight campers.

A failed spark arrestor on a bike’s exhaust, a discarded bottle, a tossed cigarette, a hot catalytic converter of a car parked on dry grass, and we face a massive conflagration – at a time when virtually all resources for forest firefighting are tasked elsewhere.

Should we have a stiff east wind like we had last weekend, a wildfire started on a remote part of the mountain is capable of sweeping all the way into Abbotsford’s eastern urban area.

Kinder Morgan approached UFV about benefit deals Jeff NAGEL and Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

As Kinder Morgan approaches universities along its proposed pipeline expansion route with lucrative partnerships, the University of the Fraser Valley is not moving forward with any deal at this time.

Dave Pinton, director of communication at UFV, said like many organizations on the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion route, UFV was approached by Kinder Morgan for discussions.

“However, at this time we are not pursuing a partnership or agreement,” he said in an email.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) announced in June that it would sign a benefits agreement with Kinder Morgan that will bring $300,000 to the institution over 20 years if the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is approved.

The expansion would see a second Kinder Morgan oil pipeline built adjacent to the existing one in order to increase carrying capacity from 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000.

Academic vice-president Salvador Ferreras of KPU said he had no ethical qualms the signing.

“We as a university do not have a position on the Trans Mountain pipeline at all,” he said.

However, student leaders quickly condemned the decision, with Kwantlen Student Association vicepresident Alex McGowan saying KPU’s acceptance amounted to “tacit endorsement” of the pipeline project.

The $300,000 earmarked for Kwantlen consists mainly of scholarships and bursaries for KPU trades and technology students, and to help fund KPU’s Environmental Protection Technology lab, for which the company may gain naming rights.

Cities have also been approached with potential benefit agreements.

Last month, Chilliwack city council voted to defer signing off on a deal that would have seen Trans Mountain contribute $800,000 for a pedestrian walkway. Council there now intends to wait for a final recommendation on the pipeline twinning from the National Energy Board (NEB).

The City of Abbotsford has intervenor status, which allows the city to participate in the hearings.

City manager George Murray said the city has a list of concerns about the project, not all of which have been addressed by Kinder Morgan at this time. The city has been in discussions with Kinder Morgan on a number of issues and has been approached about the benefit agreements. Once they have finalized other discussions on these concerns, “we may be open to having discussions about community benefits.”

Kinder Morgan has benefit deals worth $5 million with 18 other municipalities along the pipeline route from Hope to northern Alberta. Money promised would go to various local improvements, such as parks, trails and water system upgrades.

The agreements are all contingent on the project getting NEB approval.

Toddler doing well two years after transplant Lily Hague-Wautier, 2, survives near-fatal liver disease Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

In 2013, a liver disease left baby Lily HagueWautier of Abbotsford on the brink of death, with a transplant being her only hope.

She received that transplant from her mom, Hailey Wautier, who had 22 per cent of her liver (which has since regenerated) removed for the procedure.

Lily also received blood vessels from a deceased donor.

The two-year anniversary of the surgery takes place on Aug. 22, and Hailey reports that Lily is doing remarkably well.

“She has successfully managed to get by with not a single admission for anything to the hospital – any sickness or step back with the transplant,” Hailey said.

Lily currently takes two medications, which

Hailey said Lily has since caught up with all of the developmental milestones with which she had fallen behind during her illness, and is in the 90th percentile for her height and weight.

She is almost talking in full sentences.

“Her doctors and team that see her at transplant clinic appointments regularly are amazed at how well she is doing and how well she caught up to being a regular toddler.”

The News first reported Lily’s story in December 2013, when she was 11 months old.

She was born on Jan. 5, 2013 with a liver disease called biliary atresia, which had progressed to

a critical state by March of that year.

Doctors told Hailey and her spouse Mark Hague that Lily would likely survive only three more months without a transplant.

Lily was placed on the waiting list for a deceased donor, but a new procedure and different protocols in Toronto enabled Lily’s parents to be considered as possible donors there.

Hailey’s surgery was performed at Toronto General Hospital, and her liver was placed in a container and walked across the way through an underground tunnel to be transplanted into Lily at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Hailey said Lily is now doing so well that, when looking at her, it’s impossible to tell that she was ever that sick.

“Lily continues to amaze me and is one very special toddler,” she said.

Candidates for a council seat in a small community should be able to spend no more than $10,000 to run for mayor and $5,000 for a council or school board seat, says a legislature committee on local election financing.

For larger communities, a population-based formula would limit a mayoral campaign for a city of 150,000 residents to just under $90,000, with other municipal candidates limited to half that.

During last year’s municipal election in Abbotsford, which has a population of about 135,000, former mayor Bruce Banman spent about $143,000 on his campaign, while current Mayor Henry Braun spent just over $55,000 on his victory effort.

The formula would limit a candidate for mayor of Victoria, population 80,000, to about $50,000, while Surrey’s population of 470,000 would mean a cap of $180,000 to run for mayor.

The small-town limits apply to communities up to 10,000 residents.

For larger ones, mayoral candidates would be limited to $1 per capita for the first 15,000

people, 55 cents per capita up to 150,000, 60 cents per capita for 150,000 to 200,000 and only 15 cents for communities larger than that.

Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart, who chaired the committee as it toured the province, said the limits are aimed to make running for local government “accessible and affordable,” while recognizing the vast difference between political campaigns in large cities and those in small communities.

The spending limits still have to be endorsed by the legislature, but the B.C. Liberal and NDP members of the committee endorsed them unanimously. They are part of a series of local election reforms that included extending terms to four years.

The committee wants third-party advertisers limited to five per cent of what a mayoral candidate is allowed to spend. The spending limits would be in effect starting on Jan. 1 of each election year.

B.C. is joining Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador in placing spending limits on at least some of their local elections.

I am very happy to announce that I’m officially celebrating my 20th year as a columnist, and what a ride it’s been.

What was supposed to be a few-months gig turned out to be a 240-month dialogue on a wide range of topics.

My first column ran on June 23, 1995 and Gord Kurenoff was the editor at the time.

I’ve taken this writing responsibility very seriously, and worked tirelessly with community members to bring solution to issues to better improve our diverse relationships.

Being a columnist is not as easy as people might think. You may have one person patting you on the back and at the same time, you might have a person pointing a finger in your face in disagreement.

Diversity is a very fragile concept and the moods of the community can change at any time, creating barriers.

I have taken the time to listen and have always enjoyed the feedback from readers.

When I regularly speak to people about diversity and what it means to them, the first thing I often hear is that it’s about celebrating our differences.

Yes, I believe differences are important to recognize and celebrate, but so are our similarities. Actually, we all have more similarities than differences when it comes to our families and friends.

When defining diversity and explaining what it means, it can be a little confusing for some.

Diversity is about being gentle with each other, and something simple we can all relate to. When we are gentle, we often have an open mind, creating positive relationships. Too often, I see people being a little less patience with one another.

bit more positive steam to blow off.

Do I have any regrets or things that I would have changed? No, not

that I can recall.

The berry industry, he says, has also had to deal with the fact that harvests, generally staggered over weeks and months, are having to be picked and packaged within a tighter time frame.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada cites both positive and negative effects from climate change, but warns that “warmer summers could also cause problems for livestock producers related to heat-wave deaths. This is especially true in poultry operations.”

Meanwhile, dairy and beef farm operations face issues posed by hotter, drier weather, which shortens the growing season for hay and other feed crops, or requires immense amounts of irrigation.

Much of the future outcomes in agriculture depends on just how much the region and the rest of the world warms.

The Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change says a moderate increase in temperature – between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius – above 1990 levels will be good for some areas and harmful for others. But that same panel says temperatures could rise anywhere between 1.4 and 5.5 degrees Celsius. Change at the upper end of that spectrum could have such an effect on global economies and infrastructure as to mitigate any local benefits.

Still, Baumann is hopeful that at this point many of the issues can be overcome.

“We’re adjusting to it quickly,” Baumann continued. “I believe our agriculture has the knowledge to deal with all of these things, and if you look at it overall, if the forest doesn’t burn up around us, in agriculture, we have a fantastic chance to be even better than we are now.”

But while Baumann says a changing climate is probably a net positive for the region, it will also bring challenges for both growers and governments.

Ensuring crops get enough water is the most obvious challenge. The Fraser Valley’s relatively small size compared to its bountiful water resources mitigates some of the risk.

“We here in the Fraser Valley are so incredibly lucky that we have water galore,” Baumann said, although he warns that “We could overdo it with the use of water and draw on our reservoirs too much.”

The availability of water isn’t something to be taken for granted, however. This year’s dry, hot spring and early summer have forced farmers to rely on irrigation, the water from which originates either from wells that tap aquifers or from drainage ditches that use water pumped in from streams and rivers that feed into the Fraser River. Fortunately, within the last decade a government program encouraged farmers to dig deeper drainage ditches and increase their irrigation capacity.

“We would be dead in the water if that hadn’t happened,” Baumann said. “Our winters are getting wetter and our summers are getting drier, so we have to do both – drain and irrigate.”

A 2015 report on agricultural water demand suggests that “in an extreme climate scenario,” demand for water would be nearly twice as high as in 2003, which was one of the driest on record.

And while more hot, dry summers will be good for some crops, others may suffer.

‘Living wage’ employers recognized

Abbotsford business certified An Abbotsford business was among nine employers in B.C. certified on July 2 as providing a “living wage” to their workers.

Mt. Lehman Credit Union is now the third certified living wage employer in the Valley, after Vancity and Mission Community Skills Centre.

Employers are certified by the Living Wage for Families Campaign when they pay all direct and thirdparty contracted staff a living wage.

The living wage is the amount a family of four, with two parents working full time, need to earn to meet their expenses. The figure in the Fraser Valley for 2015 has been calculated at $17.27 an hour.

Deanna Ogle, campaign organizer with the Living Wage for Families Campaign, said eight of the nine newly certified employers have fewer than 50 employees.

“This demonstrates the strong commitment and contribution of small businesses to the economic health of local communities,” she said.

There are now 46 certified living wage employers across B.C., covering more than 6,500 direct employees and countless contracted staff.

Digitization of Abbotsford history

Abbotsford’s extensive history will continue to be digitized at The Reach, thanks in part to a $10,000 grant from the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, BC History Digitization Program.

“This funding, the sixth in as many years from I.K. Barber, is crucial to recording and preserving our diverse and rich local history for current and future generations,” said Kris Foulds, collections manager at The Reach.

“It allows us to digitize an additional 5,000 historic images from a collection donated to us by the Abbotsford News and should bring the total of publicly accessible online images to 31,000 by early 2016.”

The Reach Archives is the only source of The News images since the newspaper does not maintain an images archive; it instead has entrusted The Reach to conserve and share these images

with the public. As the longest extant community newspaper, its photographers have chronicled the city’s history for over 90 years, and documented the changes, challenges and triumphs of Abbotsford.

Digitization has created a dialogue between images and context presented with knowledge and information held within, as well outside, the community.

The digitized historical images have been used by local authors, for collector car show awards, and just recently, by the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association for its street banners and in the new Abbotsford Village to City book published by the MSA Museum Society.

The Reach also utilizes images regularly in its heritage exhibits and complements them with pieces from its material culture collection of 5,000 plus artifacts.

Douglas named to national Pan-Am Games squad Local rugby star one of 12 set to tackle nations in two-day sevens event Brandon KOSTINUK Abbotsford News

Abbotsford’s Justin Douglas was named to the 12-man Rugby Sevens squad selected to represent Canada at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.

Douglas, in a recent interview with The News, said he was feeling great, having been injured for a good part of the year with a cracked vertebrae and nagging ankle issue. “I am excited about the opportunity. We have a good shot to get gold,� said Douglas.

Standing in the way of that top podium position though is the U.S., which downed

Canada, 21-5, in the finals of the NACRA Sevens Olympic qualifying tournament last month.

The men’s rugby sevens event will run July 11-12, and will feature, in addition to Canada, squads from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Guyana, Mexico, Uruguay, and the U.S. The men’s team arrived in Toronto Monday morning and got settled in with a walk around the athletes’ village situated on Toronto’s West Don Lands, built to accommodate the 10,000 or so athletes expected at the Games.

that works to keep selected athletes together and training

Games and ultimately the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

It will be the first time rugby sevens will be featured as an event at the Olympics.

The sport, in any form, has not been played at the Summer Olympics since 1924 when union style rugby was an event. “We train [in Langford] all year,� said Douglas. “We’re a very close group.�

Douglas wa s first named to the Canadian senior men’s rugby sevens team in 2013 – then the youngest player on the squad at 19.

In October 2012, he was named to the team for the Gold

Coast Sevens, the first event of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series and has cracked the roster for other World Series events, earning trips to Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan and England, but said he relishes the opportunity to play in Toronto, in front of the home crowd.

Canada’s opening match is against Guyana, on July 11 at BMO Field, renamed Exhibition Stadium for the Games. The match begins at 12:17 p.m.

Mortensen heads to Toronto for the 2015 Pan American Games

Abbotsford’s Jared Mortensen and the Canadian national team will be at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games this weekend, as the men open the tournament against the

Dominican Republic Saturday, July 11 at 7:05 p.m. Mortensen is coming off a strong national team debut following a game pitched against the United States College National Team on July 7,

in Canada’s only win at the Americas Baseball Festival.

The right-handed pitcher gave up a solo home run in the first inning but retired 11 in a row and completing his

four-inning outing with two strikeouts in a 12-2 victory.

Mortensen used to pitch for the NAIAlevel LSU-Shreveport Pilots. He went undrafted in 2012 before

Canada defeated Hungary in quarterfinal play, Thursday, to advance further into the Universiade water polo event. They play next on July 12.

Abbotsford’s Alexa Tielmann and Team Canada defeated Hungary, 7-5, in the women’s water polo quarterfinals Thursday, at the 2015 Summer Universiade.

“We took control of the match during the beginning of the game since we had many opportunities on offence. We were able to play at our rhythm and the girls executed very well,” said head coach David Paradello.

Kelly McKee put Canada up 6-3 and the teams traded two

more goals in the fourth before Canada was able to hold on for the win.

Canada moved to 4-0 in the women’s water polo preliminaries after securing a 15-11 victory against Japan on Tuesday.

With that win, Canada clinched first place in Group A. Tielmann, a regular starter, has accumulated close to 80 minutes of play over the course of preliminaries and the knockout stage.

The Abbotsford native has also managed three steals, three

blocks and two goals with a 28.6 per cent shot-efficiency rate in the preliminaries.

The Canadian women opened the tournament with a 16-8 win over Serbia. They then squeezed past Russia, the defending gold medalists, 9-8, before dominating the Chinese in a match that ended 11-5.

The semi-finals are scheduled for July 12. The women’s water polo event comes to an end July 14 with the gold medal match slated for 1:30 p.m.

More choices aren’t necessarily good choices Common sense seemed to be sacrificed on the altar of choice Dave Schapansky Contributor

Growing up in a one-horse town in the North Cariboo, I was pretty aware of the lack of choices.

Back then, we had a handful of stores in town and a mail order through Sears. But I aspired to a multitude of choices in bigger centers and eventually landed in the Lower Mainland.

Here, I could find any variation of what I

wanted in unlimited stores, and I liked this freedom of choice.

But more choices are not necessarily good choices, and I found a whole bunch of bad ones in my 57 years.

I learned that there are lots of credit card companies that wanted to give me their card. And when I was done with them, there were plenty of nice banks that would gladly help me consolidate my credit card debts.

I also discovered an abundance of drug choices that made me feel good.

And then of course, there were the choices of internet sites, all accessible in a few keystrokes.

I made choices that I thought I would never make. Common sense seemed to be sacrificed on the altar of choice.

I felt the pain of those choices, and argued it was my right. I even felt others should help me with the pain of these

choices.

I was a slow learner.

But I read once that, “I should not expect honey in the pot if God has written poison on the lid” (Gurnall).

And I came to realize that I mattered to God, that He wanted to heal my pain and even help me with my choices, if I allowed Him to.

Lena

Ken passed away in Nanaimo following a year-long battle with cancer. He fought his last battle “one day at a time” with courage and dignity. Ken spent most of his life in the lower mainland where he worked as a mechanic. He spent his last 11 years in Campbell River near the ocean that he loved. She is survived by her son Harold (Elaine Cameron), daughter Linda (Doug) Fenton, her granddaughters Nicole (Shawn) Pattison and Jennifer (Andy) Taylor, grandson Chris Cameron (Dana and family) and her four great grandchildren Connor, Dylan, Kaitlyn and Jake.

When mom’s health started to fail, she moved to a care home in Abbotsford and then to The Residence in Mission for her final year.

George did not believe he would live past age 50 and with the greatest sense of humour often discussed “stroking out”, somehow knowing his untimely fate. He is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Lorraine McAdie and their two boys, Shawn (Marlee), Chad (Ria), and his daughter Megan and John (considered his 3rd son); all with whom he shared his honorable work ethic, passion for fishing, and lust for life.

While George had countless numbers of extended family and friends, none were closer to him than his seven best friends and grandkids; Jake, Jaiden, Dawson, Cole, Sydney, Jude and Emery. There will be no viewing as we refuse to honour his request to prop him up in the corner with a cigarette in his mouth. Everyone who understands George’s sick and twisted sense of humour is asked to join us formally Saturday July 11th at 3pm at Seven Oaks Alliance Church, 2575 Gladwin Road Abbotsford and following the service at the McAdie residence at 10063 Mountain View Road, Mission. Anne Kristine Schmidt (née Anna Reddekopp) passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on July 2, 2015 in Abbotsford, BC. Her home town for 60 years. She was born on September 22, 1926 to Abram and Margaretha Reddekopp near Blumenhof, SK. Anne was the youngest child of a large farming family.

She was a lady who left a particular impact on people, a creative woman on many levels. Anne liked to play guitar, sing, sew, cook, bake and write poetry. She could whistle like a bird and in her later years was well-known for her artistic abilities as a painter of subject matter with very peaceful settings, including thatched cottages amidst colourful gardens on the banks of streams, often cast in beautiful light. A love for animals depicted these scenes with horses, rabbits, dogs, cats and birds. Wildlife, cats, kittens, vases of flowers, seascapes with tall ships or lighthouses were other themes in her artwork. Anne will be dearly missed and is survived by her husband Jacob Schmidt, children Robert, Loren (Susan) and Donna (Chris). Her grandchildren are Donna’s daughter Sarazen and Loren’s sons Taylor and Spencer. Many nieces and nephews also remember her very fondly. A memorial service will be held on July 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1672 Salton Road, Abbotsford, BC.
