The first neighbourhood pub in the Comox Valley is still the best neighbourhood pub in the Comox Valley. But don't take Whistle Stop Neighbourhood Pub owner Barry Van Dusen's word for that. Ask any of the many loyal and satisfied customers who drop by on a regular basis. In January 2016 the Whistle Stop will celebrate its 40th anniversary at its Courtenay location. More immediately, in September 2015 Van Dusen will be celebrating his 12th year as owner of the pub with a month of specials and giveaways. That's one of Van Dusen's ways of thanking his customers for their loyalty over the years. Frequent special prices at the establishment's beer and wine store is another. However, Van Dusen is quick to note it's his friendly staff (many who have been there for 10 to 11 years), great service, superb food and friendly atmosphere that contributes so much to the pub's success.
Many first-time diners have commented on the large portions, and Van Dusen says it's his aim to make sure no one goes home hungry. "You don't want to eat a meal then have to pick up a pizza on the way home," he says. From the warm welcome when you walk in the door to the cold beer pouring out of the taps, the Whistle Stop has earned its reputation as a great place to drop by after work, come for a meal, or enjoy live music. Van Dusen says the Whistle Stop has always been a working man's pub where people can relax at the end of the day. "The regular crowd has become friends with myself and the staff. And we're always making new friends. I have my staff to thank for that." The Whistle Stop enjoys being a contributing partner in the community. They host charity fundraisers, do weekly meat draws, and each year the staff selects a local charity to raise funds for in a September tournament at Sunnydale Golf & Country Club. pub manager Tammy at 250334-4500). "In my 12 years here we've raised about $450,000 for charity," Van Dusen notes. The Whistle Stop hosts birthday parties and retirement parties and Van Dusen says it's "the only place in the Valley with live music every Friday and Saturday." The pub's house band Big Fun had a loyal following before breaking up, but Van Dusen says they are getting back together and when they return this summer they will be as good or better than the original. There are 20 TVs in the pub for sports fans to enjoy, and while the advent of big screen TVs (and stricter impaired driving penalties) keeps most fans at home for big events such as Grey Cup or Super Bowl, the Whistle Stop is again unique in the Valley in that it has held a pig roast tailgate party to celebrate the big games. Whatever you're celebrating, the Whistle Stop Neighbourhood Pub and liquor store is the place to do it.

Our Wine Tasting Dinner nights are always a big hit! They include 6 wines and a 3 course dinner. The best part? They only cost $25/per person! Our first of the season is on the saturday closest to Valentine's day, we schedule our second around Mother's Day, the following we always have once the kids are back in school (what a great way to celebrate!). Finally our last is in early December, which is a great way to celebrate without breaking your Christmas budget. We hope to see you at our next event! It will be an evening to remember.
We always have a party to celebrate that includes many specials on food and drinks for the entire month. Our 40th Anniversary is coming in January 2016 and we will be throwing the biggest celebration of our history! Barry bought the Whistle Stop Pub in September 2003, so he always makes sure there are specials happening including our ever popular wing nights.

Keep an eye out for local artist, Brian Scott’s 2015 KIA Soul Masterpiece, as we have also teamed up with local artists having paintings done of KIA vehicles for us or teaming up with local businesses and using their gift certificates in some of our promos.
Being able to help local charities like the Comox SPCA, Food Bank, Today and Tomorrow Learning Society is something we are most proud of. Last year for “KIA Drive Change Day” Aug 21st 2014 , we were able to raise over $2,000.00 for the Comox Valley Child Development Association and will be looking to do even better for 2015. It’s all about the people in this great valley of ours. Why are we different you may ask? We have two used car inventories to pick from (ours and Island HONDA). We don’t want to waste people’s time; no nonsense dealing, up front quick honest service with full disclosure and transparency. We support local, hire local and care about our local community, wanting to keep our spending in the local economy and value the customers from this area.
