“Jump In” Rod Run organizer Ron Choquette in his 1931 Ford Model A, the Black Rose.
The Creston Valley Farmers’ Market (CVFM) is teaming up with the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets to encourage visitors to bring along a friend while they shop for local produce and goods. Throughout July, anyone in B.C. can participate in Meet My Market month by bringing a friend to their local B.C. farmers’ market and entering a grand
prize giveaway via social media or in person at participating markets. “Last Saturday was our biggest market yet, with 42 local vendors,” CVFM manager Jen Comer on Monday. “We continue to grow — our spring market attracted 13 per cent more vendors than 2014, when we experienced a 26 per cent growth over the previous year. But we always want to bring more customers to our vendors.” SEE MARKET, PAGE 2

Owners of pre-1976 vehicles are invited to join in the “Jump In” Rod Run on the August long weekend. Organizer Ron Choquette has mapped out a two-day route (Aug. 1-2) that is free to participate in and can be joined at any point along the way. It’s all about the camaraderie that classic vehicle owners enjoy, he said last week. “The route laid out is circuitous,” he said, “so you may join us as we pass through your hometown (or close to it), and you may leave whenever and wherever it suits you.” The rod run starts out at 9 a.m. Aug. 1 in Creston and heads east
through Yahk and Cranbrook before turning northward and through Kimberley, Canal Flats, Fairmont Hot Springs, Invermere, Radium and Golden, where an overnight stay is planned. It starts again the following morning at 8 a.m. and heads west, south and then east through Revelstoke, Shelter Bay (where cars will board a free ferry), Galena Bay, Nakusp, New Denver, Silverton, Slocan, Winlaw, Nelson and Salmo before winding up in Creston by 5 p.m. On Aug. 3, there will be a show and shine sponsored at the Ramada Creston parking lot for those who want to make an entire long weekend of it.

“There’s no doubt that people in B.C. are passionate supporters of their local farmers’ markets,” said Elizabeth Quinn, executive director at the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. “With Meet My Market month, we’re encouraging our loyal visitors to introduce a friend to their market — and to show off the beautiful in-season foods, and the great neighbourhood experience they love.” Across the province, more than 125 farmers’ markets offer an abundance of locally

Entries can also be sent to the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets Facebook page (bit.ly/ meetmymarket). “It’s going really good,” Comer said of this year’s market. “We are even starting to get more interest from out-of-town vendors, and that helps us fill gaps in what we have available locally. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick agrees on the importance of these local markets. “There’s something special about every farmers’ market and I encourage everyone to share their favourite with a friend, as well as visiting a few more,” he said. “When you visit your local farmers’ market you can see and taste what B.C. has to offer and all while supporting local jobs and businesses.” A draw box at the CVFM

Creston Tennis Club members receiving lessons is among the activities newcomers can see during the week of July 20.
Tennis club hosting week of awareness, activities BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Are you looking for an activity that suits people of all ages and isn’t expensive to get started? How about tennis? The Creston Valley Tennis Club has a week of activities planned beginning on July 20 to introduce itself and the game to the public. The 28-member club maintains two courts at the south end of the Prince Charles Secondary School grounds on 18th Avenue. It will be offering lessons for juniors and seniors with instructor Mary Wigen. Basic instruction and an intro-
duction to the game are designed to encourage new participants, said club member Sumarie Leroux. “Club membership is only $30 for singles and $50 for families,” she said. “There is no cost to play, but people can leave a donation when they play on the courts.” The courts are open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. Club members get a lock code and can play whenever they want. Lights are on until 10 p.m. Club members play Monday through Thursday from 5-8 p.m. “We want people to come out and have fun, enjoy the game for the few months of the
summer that the weather allows us,”Leroux said. “We have two working days when we put up the wind screens in the spring and remove them again in the fall.” Members are working to promote the game to have its importance recognized in the Official Community Plan so that new courts can be eventually planned and constructed. For more information about the July Tennis Week schedule, view the Creston leisure guide (recently distributed in the mail by the Creston and District Community Complex). Registrations can be made at the community complex.

For sale: Well-loved property consisting of a mainland and cluster of islands that feature spectacular rugged coastlines and magnificent white sand beaches. Motivated owner willing to negotiate financing terms that include a significant cash down payment. Amenities are many and varied, ranging from turnkey operations to once popular destination venues that are now to be considered “handyman specials”, such as the Parthenon. Often referred to as the Cradle of Western Civilization, this property has close historical ties with the scientific, medical, political and philosophical communities, and opportunities abound to rejuvenate them. Included in the sale is a coin mint and press facility capable of turning out coins and paper money of little value. The canny entrepreneur will see these as opportunities for future revenue generation. Existing banks offer large storage space, although recent heavy use indicates a maintenance program will need to be instituted in the short term. With panoramic views that include, to the north, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia and Albania; to the west, the Ionian Sea; to the south, the Mediterranean Sea; and to the east, the Aegean Sea and Turkey. Disclosure: Prospective buyers should be aware that current ownership of this property may be in dispute, with a number of banks threatening to place liens as they attempt to claim monies owed. For further information, contact Angela Merkel, president of Germany Inc. Holdings. Okay, I exaggerate. But, as my old university geography prof liked to say, not by much. We were in Calgary in the run-up to the referendum asking Greeks whether they wanted to continue with an international bank-enforced austerity plan or take their chances on finding their own solution. In a discussion with my oldest son, I said that I would like to see a no vote, but that I
would also like to see what the government’s Plan B is. So I got my first wish but, in all honesty, I doubt there is a Plan B. Naturally, the leftist Greek govern-
In the last three or four columns, I’ve been presenting some pretty profound ideas about what life actually is, and I’m I thinking that some of my readers could be feeling perplexed. I’ve been writing about first paragraph in 13th Century Zen master Eihei Dogen’s essay, “Mountains and Rivers Sutra”, where he lays out his vision of reality. Dogen was a wellintentioned philosopher, poet and spiritual teacher. He wrote this essay to help us awaken from the dream of self-centredness and see a vision of reality that can free us from suffering. But the real question is, “How can I let his vision inform my daily life?” The answer is easy. “Meditate in the morning, walk mindfully, be of service to others, eat your lunch, do the dishes, take a rest, meditate in the evening, be helpful, laugh when something is funny, cry when it’s sad, take a bath, get dressed, have children, see them grow up, see them have children, watch them grow up, die.” In other words, live an ordinary life but with extraordinary awareness. To ask “How can I let this vision inform my life?” is to ask a great question because all the activities that I just described are, in a way, not
doing anything special. We usually think that “doing something” means to get it done, to fix something, to make something different from what it is. We so often operate on the assumption that something is wrong
Lorne Eckersley ment wants to negotiate a bailout package that includes a significant forgiveness of debt. But the decidedly rightist Germany, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund will be loath to support writeoffs — a lineup of other European Union (EU) nations, including Italy, which has an economy larger than Canada’s and suffers from many of the issues that hamstring Greece, could result. Of course, Greeks have long memories and when they look north to see Germany’s dominance in Europe today, they remember the nifty economic deal that it received back in 1953. Germany’s debts came from Hitler’s desire to rule the world and from the damage that two world wars caused within its own boundaries. Greeks can argue that they committed no harm to others in racking up their unsustainable debt. A systemic pattern of corruption and overspending has been eroding the Greek economy for a half-century or more and, regardless of whether the country stays in the European Union and keeps the Euro, changes have to be made. Personally, I would prefer to see Greece find its own way out of its financial mess. The people are much more likely to accept necessary change if it comes from within. And they are certainly right in their belief
that the EU and banks are not to be trusted when it comes to forcing change. The forecast five years ago that austerity measures would result in a moderate drop in the gross domestic product were stunningly inaccurate. Instead of seven per cent over five years, the drop has been 25 per cent, and the Greek economy is far worse off today than when the austerity measures were imposed. Eventually countries are going to have to take a stand to reduce the power that huge banks and the International Monetary Fund now wield. Whether the debt is forgiven or defaulted, there is one little discussed truth that should be acknowledged. The money did not magically disappear. Much of it has been repatriated to the banks in the form of interest payments and the rest continues to float around through the economies of Greece and its trading partners. Which do you think is more beneficial — the money held in banks waiting for another sucker to borrow, or the money in circulation, which is being used to buy goods and services, which in turn pays bills and wages, which in turn is used to buy goods and services and so on, ad infinitum? In a perfect world, it would be nice if all countries could live within their means, but we are in a far from perfect world. It can be argued that the ability to borrow creates stability in economic downturns, which in turn contributes to peace. Think about what might happen if a Greece, or a Brazil, Italy, Spain, Soviet Union or even a United States, simply pares back on services, watching unemployment soar with fewer or no benefits available to compensate. Starving masses tend to get a little testy and they won’t sit around idle for long before they go out and try to take what others have. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.
The paradox of Zen A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague with our lives, that we need to do something about us. But what I just described is nothing more than a simple life lived moment by moment, without stress. But there is a paradox here. In order to reach this stress-free state, we have to struggle to drop our conditioned views. We have been conditioned to think that as humans, we have to fix something, master something or accomplish something. This conditioning that something is essentially wrong with us is very deep, but if we want to live the Zen life, we have to drop that idea.
So, on the one hand, Zen practice is easy. In fact, it is the easiest thing in the world. Once we have let go of our conditioning, practice is satisfying and effortless. But we have to make a huge effort to reach the place where we can appreciate our lives on that level. Reading and studying the profound teachings of Zen master Dogen is interesting, but the only way to truly understand him is to live them. It takes discipline, effort and a regular meditation practice. Suggested practice: Set up a place in your home where you can begin a regular meditation practice. First thing in the morning and last thing before you go to bed, meditate for 20 minutes. To insure that your meditation practice is as effective as it could be, meditate at the zendo at least once a week to hear the teachings. Make every activity in your daily life a meditation practice. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Sakura-ji, Creston’s zendo. This column is part of a long essay on an essay by 13th century Zen master Eihei Dogen and is inspired by the teaching of Norman Fishcher. For more information, Minogue can be reached at 250428-6500, and previous columns are available at www.zenwords.net.

On May 31, a crew of enthusiastic volunteers showed up at the former West Creston Ferry landing. Much appreciated was the mechanical assistance of a skid steer, donated by Northtown Rental and Sales owner Dave Moore and operated by Todd Francoeur, loading and grading layers of dirt full of glass and nails from the fire site. Four hours later, after the unglamorous job of yet again cleaning up the burnt remains of people’s personal household garbage, pulling bags of trash and old appliances out of the bush and trimming grass, Trails for Creston Valley Society volunteers stood back to admire a job well done. How to keep it this way is the question being uttered by each of the volunteers. The trails society is working with Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks to clean up this site to create a clean, safe recreational space where visitors and residents can go to enjoy the beauty and natural habitat we call home. The society’s goal by fall is to expand the parking space, creating ample room for a truck and trailer to pull through and park 10 to 15 cars without blocking access to the boat launch or the road. It also wants to put in several picnic sites with fire pits, including a large “communal” fire pit where people can enjoy a safe, reasonably sized fire where nails from burned pallets will be contained.

The more the site is used, the more eyes and ears will be on the ground to discourage those who would continue to make it their personal dump. Please go take a look at the hard work that has been done. Like all user maintained sites, this is a carry in,
carry out recreation site, and is an important asset in the valley. The trails society appreciates the Telus crew for choosing a local trails project for their annual days of giving. Their contribution helped make the clean-up day a success.

— Giant inflatables made Canada Day fun for Creston Valley children, with an obstacle course, batting cage and waterslide brought to the Creston and District Community Complex by the Creston Valley Spirit Committee. The afternoon activities were followed in the evening by Emma Kade singing O Canada and elected officials handing out cake. With a fire ban prompting the postponement of the fireworks display, the day’s events were capped off by performances by bands Legion and Stormcrow. Dogs of our Lives
BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
There was more than just Canada Day to celebrate in Canyon Park on July 1. Members of the Canyon Community Association were eager to show off the newly constructed washroom building that was constructed thanks to dedicated volunteers and grants from several sources, including $56,000 from a Government of Canada infrastructure fund. “Please take the opportunity to sit down and enjoy the new washrooms,” a smiling association president Deb Nelius told the Canada Day crowd. Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks was on hand to represent his government at the festivities. Also in attendance to extend Canada Day greetings and help in distributing cake were Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall and Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director Tanya Wall. Next in the series of improvements are renovations to the kitchen, Nelius said.
What would our lives be like without dogs? As Your Hometown Vet we love canines of all shapes and sizes! We welcome you to drop by for a canine treat or weigh in, or just to say “Hello!” Summer Pet Safety Tips: • Provide plenty of shade and cool water. • Avoid hot pavement on sensitive paws. • Beware of overheating in parked vehicles.

Online resource helping women seeking safety KOOTENAI COMMUNITY CENTRE SOCIETY
The Irivne House Safe Home and Creston Older Women's
Safe Home Program, run by Creston’s Kootenai Community Centre Society, celebrated last month’s launch of the new Sheltersafe.ca online resource
to help women seeking safety from abuse. With the launch of Sheltersafe.ca, women and children across the country will
have a one-stop connection to help in their community. Any time of day or night women can find local support through Sheltersafe.ca.
A powerful connection to what matters most .
The most reliable Internet technology * is now in Creston. With 100% fibre optics right to your home,† you’ll experience crystal-clear HD video calls to help you stay connected. Get Optik TV and Internet 25 for $50/mo. for 1 year when you sign up for 3 years.‡ TM
Regular price currently $93/month.
The new site provides a single point of information for women seeking safety by quickly identifying a shelter within a geographic region. The map provides telephone numbers and websites, while protecting the confidential locations of shelters. Sheltersafe.ca also underlines that women do not need to reside as a shelter resident in order to access shelter services, because in addition to being a safe place to stay, many shelters offer telephone support, counselling and safety planning for women in crisis. The site quickly points concerned family, friends and neighbours to someone they can talk to about suspected abuse of a loved one. This resource was developed by the Canadian Network of Women’s Shelters and Transition Houses, which represents over 350 women’s shelters across Canada. “The most typical experience for victims of domestic violence is isolation,” said Dawna Pritchard, executive director of a remote shelter in Manitoba. “A map indicating hundreds of points of light, of hope and of safety is more than a tool. It is a reminder that you are not alone. It is a reminder that whether you live in a large urban centre or in a remote community, there is domestic violence and that there are resources that can help.” Irvine House Safe Home and Creston Older Women's Safe Home Program is a founding participant in the Sheltersafe.ca initiative and can be found by zooming into the Creston region on the map of Canada.

International choir offering homecoming concert SPIRITSONG
Northern Idaho and British Columbia singers present the homecoming concerts for international touring choir Spiritsong’s June 2015 tour to Greece. Performances will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sandpoint’s United Methodist Church, 7:30 p.m. July 11 at Bonners Ferry’s Pearl Theater and 3 p.m. July 12 at Creston’s Prince Charles Theatre. The July 10-12 homecoming performances will include the music Spiritsong performed at various locations in Greece, as well as slides and stories of their adventures presented in a PowerPoint format during and between the songs. The concert is titled “Dare to Dance the Dream” and contains a wide variety of secular and sacred works with dances and movement in the staging of many of the songs. In Athens, Spiritsong performed with two choirs from Fresno, Calif., and a Greek choir that has sung for the Olympic ceremonies. “I do not know of any other conductor who has the vision, personality and acumen to create such a compelling concert with identical resources,” said Dr. Anna Hamre, conductor of the Fresno choirs and professor at Fresno State University, about Spiritsong and conductor Vicki Blake Thompson. “It is the kind of per-

formance I tell my students is possible — but I have never actually accomplished myself. Vicki and Spiritsong are a model for us all.” Accompanist for Spiritsong is Barb Nelson of Bonners Ferry. Singers include Needie Kennedy, Trisha Dickens and Sam
Richardson from Sandpoint, Idaho; Connie Walters from Rathdrum, Idaho; Margaret Lavender, Mary Anne Bishop, Shirley Cameron, Rita MacDonnell and Liz Endicott from Creston; and Carole Dinning, Cheyenne White, Karen Pedey, Carol
Rutherford, Jan Klopfenstein, Marj Nishek, Dianne Snider, Anna Martin and Si Thompson from Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Dancers include Kelli Smith from Bonners Ferry, and Terra and Boston Bode from Sandpoint, as well as Richardson, Cameron, Blake
Thompson and Dickens. The performance is fast paced, includes several dances and many visuals, and is appropriate for all ages. Admission is by a suggested donation of $10 US or $12 Cdn at the door.
Jacquelyn Cherowka
Obituaries Genette Marlene James September 15, 1928 ~ July 4, 2015 Genette James passed away July 4, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Raymond James; daughters Sally Taylor, Arlene Moberg (Glen), Betty Armitage (Duff); son Dennis Land, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There will be a private family service.
November 27, 1954 ~ June 28, 2015 On June 28, 2015, surrounded by her loving family, Jackie went home to be with her Heavenly Father, at the age of 60. She passed peacefully after fighting a hard battle against brain cancer. Jackie is survived by her husband and best friend of 44 ½ years, Al Cherowka; her children Bill (Tracey) Cherowka, Carole (Moustapha) Sarr, Carrie (Clayton) Palmer and Tracy (Dan) Bender. Jackie will also be fondly remembered by ten grandchildren and her sisters Debby (Dave) Kehler and Tracy (Dale) Eggen; mother-in-law Anna Cherowka; sisters-in-law Sharon-Colleen (Dave) Kiehlbauch, Lorna (Keith) McColm and numerous nieces and nephews, all who loved Aunty Jackie dearly. She was predeceased by her father Willard; mother Ella; sisters Cathy and Wanda; brothers Marcel and David; and father-in-law William (Bill) Cherowka. Jackie was born in Imperial, Saskatchewan on November 27, 1954 to Willard and Ella Shortt, the third of seven children. At age of 13 she met and began dating her one true love, Al Cherowka. After a few years of courtship, they married on December 12, 1970 and began their life together. The Cherowkas lived a short time in Watrous, Saskatchewan before moving to Saskatoon. In 1972 they headed to Alberta, living for a short period in Whitecourt then later settling in Edson, Alberta where they raised their family until 1989 when they relocated to Creston, BC. In 2008 they started
spending winters in Yuma, Arizona where many friends and family enjoyed their "warm" Arizona hospitality. Throughout these years Jackie worked alongside Al, the love of her life, in all their business ventures - they were a very successful team. Jackie will be remembered for her kind heart and love for all. Whether family, friend or stranger, her love for life shone through and touched everyone she met. Although her love for others always was evident, her love for her family was her greatest joy. Her passion for baking and cooking for others never went unnoticed. It was always exciting to know you were going to be spoiled by her amazing gift in the kitchen. Jackie will be dearly missed but will live on in the hearts of so many. Her family will forever find peace and comfort in knowing that she has gone home to be with her Lord and Saviour. A private family service will take place in Creston B.C. Friends wishing to make a memorial tribute may do so to the Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Ave. S. Cranbrook, BC V1C 2L9.
